Fool","summary":"The company is generating growth, but its bottom line is cause for some concern.","content":"
Having gone public via a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) merger at the start of the current SPAC craze back in mid-2020, Tattooed Chef (NASDAQ:TTCF) says in its own investor materials that it's looking to be a disruptive upstart in the fast-growing plant-based foods sector. After a pair of recent acquisitions and a toothsome first-quarter earnings report, investors rewarded the company with a 20% share price increase in May.
\n
An investor conference began on June 16, allowing investors to get a better look at the company's recent background and get clues as to where it might be going. Here are three points you may want to consider while deciding if Tattooed Chef is the next Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND) or if its weaknesses will limit its growth.
\n
1. Tattooed Chef's operations are thriving
\n
Despite the company having a traditional advertising budget of zero, Tattooed Chef's sales are booming, with overall revenue jumping 59% year over year from $33.2 million in Q1 2020 to $52.7 million in Q1 2021. An even more favorable sign for customer loyalty and brand recognition was the 105% year-over-year surge in products specifically branded with the Tattooed Chef name (the company also produces store-brand food products for various retailers). The company is projecting between $235 million and $242 million in total revenue for 2021 and a minimum of $300 million in the coming year.
\n
\n
The plant-based food maker is also achieving notable growth in the extent of its distribution network. According to company data, the number of stores carrying its products soared 41% between Dec. 31, 2020, and March 31, 2021, rising from 4,300 to 6,065. Points of distribution jumped to 31,000 from 23,000, an increase of nearly 35%.
\n
During the Q1 earnings conference call, CEO Salvatore Galletti said that by Q2's end on June 30, \"We expect to be an additional 1,162 stores with 8,000 new points of distribution, including a number of larger grocery chains.\" He added, \"We are confident we can achieve our 2021 objective of 10,000 stores and 65,000 points of distribution for Tattooed Chef by year end.\"
\n
Two early May acquisitions by Tattooed Chef, costing the company a total of $35 million, could be a catalyst for stronger growth and expanded production, too. Tattooed snapped up Karsten Tortilla Factory and New Mexico Food Distributors. According to Galletti, it \"will be immediately addressing the $1 billion Frozen Mexican Food category once the transactions close,\" and will use the new acquisitions as a stepping stone into the $20 billion market for \"Hispanic/Southwest\" food.
\n
With Abasto reporting around two-thirds of Americans (233 million) using at least some Mexican foods or recipes according to Statista research, and growth in this type of dining expected to continue, Tattooed Chef's move helps it establish a new position in a strong market sector. The purchase also adds 118,000 square feet of production facilities to its total, helping prevent a processing bottleneck during this period of rapid sales growth. Galletti remarks the two acquisitions are projected to \"contribute up to $200 million annually in revenue in the next two to three years and create significant value.\"
\n
The company is also expanding from a focus on frozen and refrigerated foods to shelf-stable foods (which it refers to with the buzzword phrase \"ambient foods\" in company literature). With sales of major shelf-stable food categories such as vegetables and soups having grown anywhere from 28% to 31.3% in 2020 according to market research firm IRI, this could be another potential sales driver.
\n
2. It's not all sunshine for the company
\n
Despite its skyrocketing sales and its relative freedom from the expense of a significant advertising budget, Tattooed Chef still registered a net loss in Q1 2021. The company's bottom line has worsened year over year: It produced positive $5.9 million net income in Q1 2020 versus a $7.9 million net loss in the same period this year. It has seen a rise in operating expenses, including a few million directed towards marketing and several million directed towards stock compensation.
\n
While Tattooed Chef makes plant-based cauliflower burgers, it simply doesn't have the serious research and development (R&D) muscle of Beyond Meat or privately held Impossible Foods to produce meat substitutes at the same level. While Beyond and Impossible maintain laboratories and fund teams of scientists to develop plant protein faux meat closely mimicking the flavor, texture, cooking characteristics, nutrition, and even bleeding of actual meat and are working on similarly advanced plant-based milk and eggs, Tattooed Chef's cauliflower burgers are just spiced and breaded cauliflower patties, a far more casual approach.
\n
Given that Beyond and Impossible owe their success to the accurate simulation of meat in a plant-based format, Tattooed Chef seems unlikely to tap strongly into that growth market. Its acai bowls, smoothie bowls, and other products, while proving salable, don't have the cutting-edge sales leverage of the advanced faux meats offered by its competitors and might be readily substituted with other companies' frozen meal bowls. Tattooed Chef, at this point, appears to lack the powerful, clear-cut product differentiation at the heart of the success of manufacturers like Beyond Meat.
\n
3. The high short interest in Tattooed Chef is a wild card
\n
One factor with potentially unpredictable consequences for Tattooed Chef is high short interest, standing at slightly over 36% at the start of June. Under ordinary market conditions, this would be a negative, indicating a large cohort of short-sellers have done their due diligence and found the company's fundamentals to be significantly lacking. A few years ago, this beefy short interest would have been a definitive warning sign about the company's future.
\n
In today's stock market climate, however, the high short interest could potentially attract the attention of large numbers of retail investors, such as those from the millions-strong r/WallStreetBets Reddit community. Noted for their tremendous short squeeze on the stock of video game seller GameStop and a growing handful of other \"meme stocks,\" these Redditors and other small investors remain on the lookout for heavily shorted stocks to buy in quantity.
\n
While Tattooed Chef seems to have drawn relatively little notice from these investors up until now, the quest for the next short squeeze takedown could eventually see the company become a meme stock, too. In this case, an attempted squeeze by WallStreetBets readers could pump immense streams of cash into Tattooed Chef, giving the company ample liquidity to aggressively pursue expansion, boost production capacity, and increase the range of product development.
\n
Should you add a taste of Tattooed Chef to your portfolio?
\n
While Tattooed Chef isn't making the groundbreaking plant-based meat or dairy products of Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods, it appears to have some real potential to become a profitable midsize vegetarian and vegan meal company. Its troubled bottom line and high short interest point to some risk, though, as noted, the latter could become an asset if the company becomes a meme stock and draws a major short squeeze cash inflow from Reddit retail investors at some point.
\n
Even without such a windfall, however, Tattooed Chef's entry into the Mexican-style food market, along with its rapid development of distribution channels, look like bullish indicators. While the company's future is uncertain and carries some risk, Fools investing in food stocks may want to consider adding at least a few of the company's shares to their holdings.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is Tattooed Chef the Next Beyond Meat? 3 Points to Consider
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nIs Tattooed Chef the Next Beyond Meat? 3 Points to Consider\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-18 17:30 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Having gone public via a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) merger at the start of the current SPAC craze back in mid-2020, Tattooed Chef (NASDAQ:TTCF) says in its own investor materials that ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"PCOM":"Points International","BYND":"Beyond Meat, Inc."},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/06/17/tattooed-chef-next-beyond-meat-points-consider/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2144742013","content_text":"Having gone public via a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) merger at the start of the current SPAC craze back in mid-2020, Tattooed Chef (NASDAQ:TTCF) says in its own investor materials that it's looking to be a disruptive upstart in the fast-growing plant-based foods sector. While the company's future is uncertain and carries some risk, Fools investing in food stocks may want to consider adding at least a few of the company's shares to their holdings.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":589,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110483963,"gmtCreate":1622484778552,"gmtModify":1704184987008,"author":{"id":"3579341802084451","authorId":"3579341802084451","name":"Hamzi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ce995b148b2f6fb621ca38e4dff0afb3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579341802084451","authorIdStr":"3579341802084451"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment please ","listText":"comment please ","text":"comment please","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/110483963","repostId":"1113386303","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1113386303","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1622472571,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1113386303?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-31 22:49","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Turkey’s Second Biggest E-Commerce Platform Files for Nasdaq IPO","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1113386303","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"SEC filing comes after revenue more than doubled last year\nIt follows string of multi-billion dollar","content":"
\n
SEC filing comes after revenue more than doubled last year
\n
It follows string of multi-billion dollar tech deals in Turkey
\n
\n
Hepsiburada.com home page.
\n
Turkey’s second biggest online shopping platform by market share applied tolist its shareson Nasdaq amid a flurry of investor interest in the nation’s burgeoningstart-upscene.
\n
Hepsiburada.com, formally known as D-Market Elektronik Hizmetler ve Ticaret AS, plans to sell shares on the tech-heavy U.S. equity gauge, according to the company’s prospectus filed to Securities and Exchange Commission on May 28. Buying a proxy company -- a company that's essentially in the business of Bitcoin -- is often seen as a reasonable solution.
\n
Enter Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN). The company went public only a few months ago, initially jumping to over $400 a share before plunging down to around $250 where it currently trades. In the fiscal first quarter of 2021 (the three months ended May 2, 2021) revenue increased 84% year over year to $5.66 billion, and adjusted earnings per share were up 106%. Ahead of the quarterly update, the semiconductor designer announced a 4-for-1 stock split. While stock splits don't have a material impact on a business's valuation, investors struck an upbeat tone on the news. Shares are now up 175.8% since the start of 2020.
\n
Stock split aside, there's reason to believe NVIDIA's run isn't over. Chip demand is sky-high right now, and the company is a leader on multiple high-growth technology fronts. Let's look at three reasons why this stock could continue its upward movement in 2021.
\n
\n
1. New gaming GPU upgrades are just getting started
\n
NVIDIA got its start with high-end video game graphics, and the industry remains the company's largest market. Gaming sales were $2.76 billion in Q1, up a whopping 106% year over year. The surge is driven by the RTX 30 series GPUs released late last year. These advanced chips come standard with ray tracing and AI-enhanced graphics capabilities to help players get the most out of their gaming experience.
\n
With such a boom in video game sales, it might seem like this leading segment at NVIDIA would be headed for a slowdown. That time hasn't arrived yet. The hardware upgrade cycle is really just getting started. NVIDIA just recently announced the first batch of laptops with RTX GPUs are coming out this summer, which makes its new chips available to tens of millions more gamers worldwide. And to better address video game market demand, NVIDIA has built restrictions in the RTX 30 series to prevent these graphics processors from going to cryptocurrency mining outfits (the new CMP chips custom designed for the crypto market are out and are expected to haul in $400 million in sales next quarter).
\n
NVIDIA said it expects revenue to be about $6.3 billion in the second quarter, up 63% from a year ago at the midpoint. While cryptocurrency chips are contributing to this torrid pace of growth, the gaming and data center markets represent the lion's share of expansion.
\n
New laptops featuring NVIDIA RTX 30 chips are coming soon. Image source: NVIDIA.
\n
2. Complex data centers need new tech hardware
\n
Speaking of data centers, this has quickly emerged as NVIDIA's second-largest vertical. Sales were $2.05 billion in Q1, up a more-than-respectable 79% year over year.
\n
Data centers operate behind the scenes but are critically important computing units in today's world. They operate the internet, mobile networks, the myriad of software services built and residing in them, and coordinate real-world activity like managing postal services and healthcare information. And in an increasingly sophisticated digital world, better hardware that is able to coordinate all this new data is needed. Lots of companies are adding GPUs to their data center designs as computing accelerators, or outright replacing older CPUs (central processing units) with faster and more energy-efficient GPUs. This is a space traditionally dominated by Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), but NVIDIA is gunning for the chip giant's haymaker. Last year, it unveiled a new data processing unit (DPU) and early in 2021 announced a CPU called Grace designed to pair with its GPUs and built from the ground up for modern data center applications like AI.
\n
Just like its gaming business, data centers are in the early stages of getting upgraded. CFO Colette Kress said on the earnings call that \"every industry is becoming a technology industry.\" There's no shortage of growth opportunity for NVIDIA, especially in cloud-based services and AI as companies unlock new capabilities and get more efficient in their operations using new chip tech.
\n
3. NVIDIA is not just a hardware company anymore
\n
NVIDIA of course makes money from the sale of its semiconductors. Licensing revenue from selling chip designs will get a big boost from the pending ARM Holdings acquisition (which Kress said is still on track to be completed by early 2022), but there's a lot more to NVIDIA's business model these days.
\n
Cloud-based recurring software-as-a-service (SaaS) revenue is a promising front for this chip company. Its auto industry platform is a prime example. Auto revenue was flat year over year in Q1 at $154 million as NVIDIA continues to exit commoditized vehicle infotainment hardware. But its Drive autonomous vehicle platform spans not just hardware but also software services, helping automakers and autonomous vehicle researchers advance self-driving and safety capabilities.
\n
Another example is Omniverse, a new collaborative software platform for designers and creators of all sorts. Omniverse has been in open beta but will have a commercial launch this summer for both individual users and enterprises. Kress said there have been over 17,000 downloads of the open beta so far, indicating robust demand for this SaaS-based business line in short order.
\n
Software sales will be a longer-term development for NVIDIA, but it nevertheless represents an exciting new outlet for this tech giant that pairs well with its leadership in GPUs. Innovation is firing on all cylinders at NVIDIA right now, and shares could continue their upward momentum through the back half of 2021 as growth continues at a rapid pace.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Forget the Stock Split, 3 Reasons NVIDIA Could Continue to Climb in 2021
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nForget the Stock Split, 3 Reasons NVIDIA Could Continue to Climb in 2021\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-31 22:15 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) got its year started with a bang. New gaming GPU upgrades are just getting started\nNVIDIA got its start with high-end video game graphics, and the industry remains the company's largest market. Gaming sales were $2.76 billion in Q1, up a whopping 106% year over year. The surge is driven by the RTX 30 series GPUs released late last year. These advanced chips come standard with ray tracing and AI-enhanced graphics capabilities to help players get the most out of their gaming experience.\nWith such a boom in video game sales, it might seem like this leading segment at NVIDIA would be headed for a slowdown. That time hasn't arrived yet. The hardware upgrade cycle is really just getting started. NVIDIA just recently announced the first batch of laptops with RTX GPUs are coming out this summer, which makes its new chips available to tens of millions more gamers worldwide. And to better address video game market demand, NVIDIA has built restrictions in the RTX 30 series to prevent these graphics processors from going to cryptocurrency mining outfits (the new CMP chips custom designed for the crypto market are out and are expected to haul in $400 million in sales next quarter).\nNVIDIA said it expects revenue to be about $6.3 billion in the second quarter, up 63% from a year ago at the midpoint. While cryptocurrency chips are contributing to this torrid pace of growth, the gaming and data center markets represent the lion's share of expansion.\nNew laptops featuring NVIDIA RTX 30 chips are coming soon. Sales were $2.05 billion in Q1, up a more-than-respectable 79% year over year.\nData centers operate behind the scenes but are critically important computing units in today's world. Last year, it unveiled a new data processing unit (DPU) and early in 2021 announced a CPU called Grace designed to pair with its GPUs and built from the ground up for modern data center applications like AI.\nJust like its gaming business, data centers are in the early stages of getting upgraded. CFO Colette Kress said on the earnings call that \"every industry is becoming a technology industry.\" There's no shortage of growth opportunity for NVIDIA, especially in cloud-based services and AI as companies unlock new capabilities and get more efficient in their operations using new chip tech.\n3. NVIDIA is not just a hardware company anymore\nNVIDIA of course makes money from the sale of its semiconductors. Licensing revenue from selling chip designs will get a big boost from the pending ARM Holdings acquisition (which Kress said is still on track to be completed by early 2022), but there's a lot more to NVIDIA's business model these days.\nCloud-based recurring software-as-a-service (SaaS) revenue is a promising front for this chip company. Its auto industry platform is a prime example. Auto revenue was flat year over year in Q1 at $154 million as NVIDIA continues to exit commoditized vehicle infotainment hardware. But its Drive autonomous vehicle platform spans not just hardware but also software services, helping automakers and autonomous vehicle researchers advance self-driving and safety capabilities.\nAnother example is Omniverse, a new collaborative software platform for designers and creators of all sorts. Omniverse has been in open beta but will have a commercial launch this summer for both individual users and enterprises. Kress said there have been over 17,000 downloads of the open beta so far, indicating robust demand for this SaaS-based business line in short order.\nSoftware sales will be a longer-term development for NVIDIA, but it nevertheless represents an exciting new outlet for this tech giant that pairs well with its leadership in GPUs. Innovation is firing on all cylinders at NVIDIA right now, and shares could continue their upward momentum through the back half of 2021 as growth continues at a rapid pace.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":652,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110147348,"gmtCreate":1622434431184,"gmtModify":1704184367618,"author":{"id":"3579341802084451","authorId":"3579341802084451","name":"Hamzi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ce995b148b2f6fb621ca38e4dff0afb3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579341802084451","authorIdStr":"3579341802084451"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"good","listText":"good","text":"good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/110147348","repostId":"2139438981","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2139438981","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Dow Jones publishes the world’s most trusted business news and financial information in a variety of media.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Dow Jones","id":"106","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/150f88aa4d182df19190059f4a365e99"},"pubTimestamp":1622423066,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2139438981?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-31 09:04","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Bitcoin is headed toward its worst month since 2011; 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' author says that's 'great news'","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2139438981","media":"Dow Jones","summary":"Rough month provides a buying opportunity, Robert Kiyosaki says.
While Beyond and Impossible maintain laboratories and fund teams of scientists to develop plant protein faux meat closely mimicking the flavor, texture, cooking characteristics, nutrition, and even bleeding of actual meat and are working on similarly advanced plant-based milk and eggs, Tattooed Chef's cauliflower burgers are just spiced and breaded cauliflower patties, a far more casual approach.\nGiven that Beyond and Impossible owe their success to the accurate simulation of meat in a plant-based format, Tattooed Chef seems unlikely to tap strongly into that growth market. Its acai bowls, smoothie bowls, and other products, while proving salable, don't have the cutting-edge sales leverage of the advanced faux meats offered by its competitors and might be readily substituted with other companies' frozen meal bowls. Tattooed Chef, at this point, appears to lack the powerful, clear-cut product differentiation at the heart of the success of manufacturers like Beyond Meat.\n3. The high short interest in Tattooed Chef is a wild card\nOne factor with potentially unpredictable consequences for Tattooed Chef is high short interest, standing at slightly over 36% at the start of June. Under ordinary market conditions, this would be a negative, indicating a large cohort of short-sellers have done their due diligence and found the company's fundamentals to be significantly lacking. A few years ago, this beefy short interest would have been a definitive warning sign about the company's future.\nIn today's stock market climate, however, the high short interest could potentially attract the attention of large numbers of retail investors, such as those from the millions-strong r/WallStreetBets Reddit community. Noted for their tremendous short squeeze on the stock of video game seller GameStop and a growing handful of other \"meme stocks,\" these Redditors and other small investors remain on the lookout for heavily shorted stocks to buy in quantity.\nWhile Tattooed Chef seems to have drawn relatively little notice from these investors up until now, the quest for the next short squeeze takedown could eventually see the company become a meme stock, too. In this case, an attempted squeeze by WallStreetBets readers could pump immense streams of cash into Tattooed Chef, giving the company ample liquidity to aggressively pursue expansion, boost production capacity, and increase the range of product development.\nShould you add a taste of Tattooed Chef to your portfolio?\nWhile Tattooed Chef isn't making the groundbreaking plant-based meat or dairy products of Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods, it appears to have some real potential to become a profitable midsize vegetarian and vegan meal company. Its troubled bottom line and high short interest point to some risk, though, as noted, the latter could become an asset if the company becomes a meme stock and draws a major short squeeze cash inflow from Reddit retail investors at some point.\nEven without such a windfall, however, Tattooed Chef's entry into the Mexican-style food market, along with its rapid development of distribution channels, look like bullish indicators. While the company's future is uncertain and carries some risk, Fools investing in food stocks may want to consider adding at least a few of the company's shares to their holdings.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":589,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110480295,"gmtCreate":1622483343517,"gmtModify":1704184984577,"author":{"id":"3579341802084451","authorId":"3579341802084451","name":"Hamzi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ce995b148b2f6fb621ca38e4dff0afb3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579341802084451","authorIdStr":"3579341802084451"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"awesome","listText":"awesome","text":"awesome","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/110480295","repostId":"2139453630","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2139453630","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1622470503,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2139453630?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-31 22:15","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Forget the Stock Split, 3 Reasons NVIDIA Could Continue to Climb in 2021","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2139453630","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"2021 got off to a great start, and sales momentum is set to continue through the year.","content":"
NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) got its year started with a bang. Ahead of the quarterly update, the semiconductor designer announced a 4-for-1 stock split. Read more to find out.","content":"
In what seems like the early innings of a crypto revolution, many people wonder what's the best way to get exposure to the segment. Buying Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) directly may seem like a hassle to some amid the various decisions -- how to buy it, where to buy it, and how to store it.
It's worth considering whether Coinbase is a long-term buy and hold or if you're better off simply buying the Nasdaq stock market index as a whole. For simplicity, we'll use the Nasdaq 100 ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ) for comparison in hopes of finding the better buy.
\n
A brief look at Coinbase
\n
Coinbase occupies a unique position within the cryptocurrency ecosystem: It's a centralized exchange for Bitcoin transactions. While continued adoption of Bitcoin and other cryptos will undoubtedly help drive revenue, Coinbase will make money as long as people are trading -- which tends to happen more when Bitcoin surges. This method of extracting value from the crypto economy makes sense when you consider the stability of its revenue stream, especially if you're bullish on Bitcoin.
\n
Coinbase is attractive if you want exposure to cryptocurrency without having to buy it directly -- it's seen as a \"proxy bet\" on cryptocurrency. Further, there are still big questions about wallet and password security, and many investors feel more comfortable buying a listed stock than they do buying digital currency.
\n
But as with any single stock purchase, you'll be exposed to idiosyncratic risk, or company-specific risk. Anything adverse that could happen to Coinbase is your risk to bear -- lawsuits, accounting scandals, currency failures, you name it. Unsystematic risk is something you should definitely consider before buying any individual stock, but particularly one with a highly speculative future dependent on emerging technology.
\n
\n
The Nasdaq as a whole
\n
The Nasdaq exchange has a high concentration of technology stocks and includes Coinbase as one of the 2,500 stocks in its cap-weighted population. The clear benefit to investing in a Nasdaq-mimicking exchange-traded fund (ETF), like the Invesco QQQ Trust, for example, is that you're investing with far less risk. If something unfortunate happens to one of the portfolio constituents, you're insulated by virtue of holding many other great companies at the same time.
\n
Let's look at what you get when you invest in the Nasdaq index:
\n
Note: Data current as of May 27, 2021.
\n
While you'll note that the five-year performance numbers of top Nasdaq stocks have been pretty stellar, we aren't interested in past performance when deciding to buy -- we're interested in the potential for consistent future performance. The good news is that many of the same competitive advantages that got these companies to where they are still exist today. By buying the index as a whole, you'll have access to all of the top dogs.
\n
The verdict
\n
Any time you pit a single stock against an index, almost anyone can make the case that the single stock has greater upside potential because you probably won't see an index double or triple in a single year. Coinbase may very well double its value by 2022, minting new crypto-millionaires.
\n
But what if that doesn't happen? You need to consider the downside risk present when investing in an innovative technology (like cryptocurrency) that already has significant earnings growth priced in. Given the quality of the companies leading the Nasdaq, it's a more prudent bet to go for the basket of tried-and-true winners as opposed to a potentially volatile wild card.
\n
With all of that said, a small allocation to Coinbase can make sense if you have interest in the crypto space but don't feel the need or desire to own digital currency directly. For a long-term investor who's serious about keeping their retirement savings, however, the more diversified nature of the Nasdaq index makes it a better buy.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Better Buy: Coinbase Stock or Every Nasdaq Stock?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBetter Buy: Coinbase Stock or Every Nasdaq Stock?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-31 20:54 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
In what seems like the early innings of a crypto revolution, many people wonder what's the best way to get exposure to the segment.
