Short sellers have also lost $426 million on GameStop short positions over the past five days.About 21.8% of GameStop’s free float and 18.3% of AMC’s free float are held in short positions, indicating there is still plenty of room for retail investors to hurt the short sellers, Ortex noted. Why It Matters:Shares of heavily shorted stocks such as GameStop and AMC have been popular among retail investors since early this year. Traders belonging to the Reddit investor forum r/WallStreetBets bid up these stocks to create a short squeeze in January this year. The flurry of buying by retail investors forced bearish investors, including hedge funds, to unwind their bets against the stocks and sparked a rally in these stocks in January. The Ortex data indicates that retail investors are once again showing interest in heavily shorted stocks and the hedge funds that hold those positions.AMC Entertainment’s stock has returned year-to-date gains of 558.02%, while GameStop stock’s year-to-date returns stand at 858.60%.Price Action:GameStop shares closed less than 0.1% higher in Tuesday’s regular trading session at $180.67 and added almost 0.2% in the after-hours session to $181.00.AMC Entertainment shares closed almost 0.6% higher in Tuesday’s regular trading session at $14.03, but declined almost 0.8% in the after-hours session to $13.92.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":300,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":194732699,"gmtCreate":1621399697111,"gmtModify":1704357010664,"author":{"id":"3579475853393952","authorId":"3579475853393952","name":"JohnBuffet","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fa76868c0cb7f04348cb87ff0db18657","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3579475853393952","idStr":"3579475853393952"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Still a long way to go","listText":"Still a long way to go","text":"Still a long way to go","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d0236f57b283dc45cc99c59eb936e0af","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/194732699","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":350,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":195554175,"gmtCreate":1621303541697,"gmtModify":1704355444178,"author":{"id":"3579475853393952","authorId":"3579475853393952","name":"JohnBuffet","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fa76868c0cb7f04348cb87ff0db18657","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3579475853393952","idStr":"3579475853393952"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment :)","listText":"Like and comment :)","text":"Like and comment :)","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/195554175","repostId":"1130375037","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1130375037","pubTimestamp":1621302284,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1130375037?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-18 09:44","market":"us","language":"en","title":"US Cannabis Legislation Update: 'SAFE Act Gaining Steam'","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1130375037","media":"benzinga","summary":"The ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF is down 26.3% in the last three months as efforts to push for fede","content":"
The ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF is down 26.3% in the last three months as efforts to push for federal U.S. cannabis legalization haven’t progressed as quickly in Washington, D.C. during the early innings of the Joe Biden administration as some investors had hoped.
\n
Bank of America analyst Heather Balsky said Monday that significant steps in the cannabis legalization process may be just around the corner.
\n
SAFE Act Update:Balsky said the SAFE Banking Act, which would allow U.S. banks to service cannabis companies in states that have legalized cannabis, appears to be gaining steam in Congress, even among Republicans. The bill recently passed in the House of Representatives for the third time.
\n
It has eight Republican co-sponsors in the Senate, and Balsky said she believes it has enough bipartisan support to pass. At this point, Balsky said the biggest question for the SAFE Act is just how long Democrat and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will wait to put the SAFE Act to a vote. She predicts the SAFE Act will be put to a vote by late 2021 or early 2022.
\n
In the meantime, House Republicans David Joyce and Don Young recently introduced legislation to remove cannabis from the federal Controlled Substances Act. Balsky said investors should be prepared for volatility in cannabis stocks if the bill is voted down, which appears likely at this point.
\n
“Based on commentary from the senators regarding the bill’s inclusion of social justice and equity reforms, which are controversial among Republicans and some moderate Democrats, we are concerned it will not be able to get the 60 votes to pass the Senate,” Balsky said.
\n
She said the BWS bill will likely need to “run its course” in the Senate before the SAFE Act gets a vote.
\n
Benzinga’s Take:Cannabis stock investors shouldn’t be too disappointed if the BWS cannabis bill gets voted down in the Senate given that Balsky’s commentary suggests the bill contains some controversial left-wing provisions that may not appeal even to some moderate Democrats. POINTSThe last week of April will be extremely busy for markets with a third of the S&P 500 reporting earnings, a Federal Reserve meeting, and new spending and tax proposals from the White House.Big Tech is a highlight of the earnings calendar, with Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook and Alphabet all releasing results. The Fed is not expected to take any action, but economists expect it to defend its policy to let inflation run hot. There is some key data including first-quarter gross domestic product and the Fed’s favorite inflation measure: the personal consumption expenditures deflator. The final week of April is going to be a busy one for markets with a Federal Reserve meeting and a deluge of earnings news.Hot topics in markets will continue to be inflation and taxes.President Joe Biden is expected to detail his “American Families Plan” and the tax increases to pay for it, including a much higher capital gains tax for the wealthy. The plan is the second part of his Build Back Better agenda and will include new spending proposals aimed at helping families. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening. It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon. As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions. At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday. The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton. The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched. So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher. There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported. The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk. The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.“The Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls ‘last call,’” she said. “Really what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.”Stocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield, which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday. The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen. So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.”He also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.“I like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. They manage through it and lately they’ve been delivering,” he said.Week ahead calendarMondayEarnings:Tesla,Canadian National Railway, Canon,Check Point Software,Otis Worldwide, Vale,Ameriprise,NXP Semiconductor,Albertsons, Royal Phillips8:30 a.m. Durable goodsTuesdayFOMC begins two day meetingEarnings:Microsoft,Alphabet,Visa,Amgen,Advanced Micro Devices,3M,General Electric,Eli Lilly, Hasbro,United Parcel Service,BP,Novartis,JetBlue,Pultegroup,Archer Daniels Midland,Waste Management,Starbucks,Texas Instrument,Chubb,Mondelez,FireEye,Corning,Raytheon9:00 a.m. S&P/Case-Shiller9:00 a.m. FHFA home prices10:00 a.m. Consumer confidence10:00 a.m. Housing vacanciesWednesdayEarnings:Apple, Boeing,Facebook,Qualcomm,Ford,MGM Resorts,Humana,Norfolk Southern,General Dynamics,Boston Scientific, eBay, Samsung Electronics, GlaxoSmithKline,Yum Brands, SiriusXM, Aflac,Cheesecake Factory,Community Health System,CIT Group,Entergy,CME Group,Hess,Ryder System8:30 a.m. Advance economic indicators2:00 p.m. Fed statement2:30 p.m. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell briefingThursdayEarnings:Amazon,Caterpillar,McDonald’s,Twitter,Bristol-Myers Squibb,Comcast,Merck,Northrop Grumman, Airbus,Kraft Heinz,Intercontinental Exchange,Mastercard,Gilead Sciences,U.S. Steel, Cirrus Logic,Texas Roadhouse, Cabot Oil, PG&E,Royal Dutch Shell,Church & Dwight, Carlyle Group,Southern Co.8:30 a.m. Initial jobless claims8:30 a.m. Real GDP Q110:00 a.m. Pending home salesFridayEarnings:ExxonMobil,Chevron,Colgate-Palmolive,AstraZeneca,Clorox,Barclays, AbbVie, BNP Paribas,Weyerhaeuser,Illinois Tool Works, CBOE Global Markets, Lazard,Newell Brands,Aon,LyondellBasell,Pitney Bowes,Phillips 66,Charter Communications8:30 a.m. Personal income and spending8:30 a.m. Employment cost index Q19:45 a.m. Chicago PMI10:00 a.m. Consumer sentimentSaturdayEarnings:Berkshire Hathaway","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":101,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":346687067,"gmtCreate":1618031437059,"gmtModify":1704706189269,"author":{"id":"3579475853393952","authorId":"3579475853393952","name":"JohnBuffet","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fa76868c0cb7f04348cb87ff0db18657","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579475853393952","authorIdStr":"3579475853393952"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like my comment for tiger coins","listText":"Like my comment for tiger coins","text":"Like my comment for tiger coins","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/346687067","repostId":"2126315033","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2126315033","pubTimestamp":1617981660,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2126315033?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-09 23:21","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Netflix Grabs Sony's Pay-TV Movie Deal From Starz","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2126315033","media":"Anders Bylund","summary":"Most Hollywood studios have started their own streaming services to compete in the evolving media market. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., the chair of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust at a hearing Wednesday. The hearing brought together representatives from Apple with Google and several of their most outspoken critics, includingMatch Group, which owns dating site Tinder; Tile, which makes devices that help users find lost objects and faces new competition fromApple’s AirTag technology; and streaming music serviceSpotify. The hearing comes as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are working on updates to the antitrust laws that could better account for the power a few tech giants hold over many digital markets. That includes the ability of platforms like Apple and Google to manage the main distribution platform for apps while increasingly hawking their own competitors.Throughout the hearing, the app makers expressed fear over how easily either company could undercut their businesses by making small changes to their app store rules. They also complained of high fees for in-app purchases and unclear enforcement of standards.Allegations of threatsMultiple executives accused Apple and Google of threatening their businesses.Sine said Google called Match Group on Tuesday night after his testimony became public to ask why his testimony differed from the company’s comments in their latest earnings call.On the earnings call, Match executives had said they believed they were having productive conversations about Google’s 30% in-app payment fee through its Google Play store. But in testimony, Match complained that Google had made “false pretenses of an open platform” and complained about its “monopoly power.”Google Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Relations Wilson White said it sounded like employees working in Google’s business development team reached out to ask an “honest question.” Wilson said he didn’t view it as a threat “and we would never threaten our partners” because Google needs app developers to use its app store in order for it to be successful.Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said the call was “potentially actionable.”Klobuchar said she planned to look into the matter further.Spotify Chief Legal Officer Horacio Gutierrez said he could think of “at least four clear examples of threats and retaliation” from Apple after Spotify decided to speak out about alleged anticompetitive behavior and Apple’s fees for developers on digital products purchased through its platform. That included threats of removing Spotify’s app, refusing to promote it, or waiting for months for minor app updates to be approved, he claimed.“They’ve basically thrown the book at us in order to make it hard for us to continue to sustain our decision to speak up,” he said.Fees and rival productsMany app makers have complained about the fees gatekeepers charge for in-app purchases for digital services.Gutierrez complained of what he called Apple’s “gag order” over how it can communicate with its own users about how to upgrade to its paid version. For instance, Spotify allows customers to upgrade only outside of its iOS app in order to avoid Apple’s 15% to 30% commission fee on digital services purchased through its platform. But because Spotify doesn’t sell the paid service through its iOS app, Apple also doesn’t let the app maker talk about upgrades with customers through the app -- instead, users have to upgrade through a web browser on a PC or another method. At the same time, Apple operates a competing service, Apple Music, which has no such restrictions. Gutierrez claimed this gives Apple’s version an unfair advantage.Representatives from Apple and Google both told lawmakers that their fees for developers are meant to cover the costs that go into distributing apps through their platforms and securing them appropriately. Apple Chief Compliance Officer Kyle Andeer compared the services offered on the App Store today to the cumbersome and expensive process app makers had to pursue to distribute their apps before the App Store existed.White cast the group as a set of “small but vocal” voices of “primarily large companies.” He said he worried that in trying to satisfy their complaints, “we damage the very foundation that has allowed the Android open source ecosystem to work so well for a much larger set of small and medium-sized businesses.”In addition to complaints about fees, developers worried that Apple’s own rival products incentivized it to make unfavorable decisions toward them. For example, Tile General Counsel Kirsten Daru said the company had asked Apple for permission to use ultra-wideband (UWB) technology on iPhones to make its item-tracking technology more precise than it can be using only Bluetooth. She said Apple had refused the request, then reserved the technology for its own competitiveAirTags, which it announced on Tuesday. While Apple is rolling out a way for third-party developers to build on the more precise location data, Daru said that in other to access that, “we have to give Apple unprecedented control over our business and directed customers to the Find My app to find their lost items.”Andeer argued AirTags is a separate product from Tile, which currently has majority of the market share for the space, and that opening tools to more third-party developers will encourage competition.Unclear standardsApp makers also complained that Apple’s enforcement of its app store rules can appear arbitrary and delay the launch of key features. Apple may tell developers which rule they’ve violated, but not exactly how or what to do to fix it, Sine said.He said Tinder had tried to submit a version of its app with a feature aimed at protecting its LGBTQ+ users by notifying them when they were in a country where they could be at risk of exposing their sexuality or gender identity. Sine said that it took two months and a conversation between top executives of Match Group’s ownerIACand Apple to sort out the issue. An exchange between subcommittee Ranking Member Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Andeer revealed how complex Apple’s App Store rules can be.Lee asked Andeer to differentiate between why a paid service through Tinder might incur a commission while one for Uber would not. Andeer explained an Uber customer is paying for a non-digital service — a car to show up to their house — while they don’t expect the same return from Tinder, saying that would be a different service, in what appeared to be a insinuation of sex work. The app makers emphasized their reliance on the app stores because of their unprecedented access to consumers. But, they argued, it’s not the symbiotic relationship that Apple and Google like to paint.“We are not successful because of what Apple has done, we have been successful despite Apple’s interference,” Gutierrez said. “And we would have been much more successful but for their anticompetitive behavior.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":87,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":379044020,"gmtCreate":1618644590960,"gmtModify":1704713781291,"author":{"id":"3579475853393952","authorId":"3579475853393952","name":"JohnBuffet","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fa76868c0cb7f04348cb87ff0db18657","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579475853393952","authorIdStr":"3579475853393952"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Don't think so","listText":"Don't think so","text":"Don't think so","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/379044020","repostId":"1159260950","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1159260950","pubTimestamp":1618588467,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1159260950?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-16 23:54","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Pinterest sees worst drop in weeks as Cleveland hints at weak end to quarter","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1159260950","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"(April 16) Pinterest is 8% lower in the stock's worst one-day decline in weeks, alongside some inkli","content":"
(April 16) Pinterest is 8% lower in the stock's worst one-day decline in weeks, alongside some inklings that the quarter mayhave fizzed at bit toward the end.
\n

\n
Cleveland Research says Q1 looks like it ended softer than mid-quarter expectations would indicate, and some agencies/partners noting a deceleration from Q4 levels.
\n
And some omni-channel retailers are seeing Pinterest spending decelerating. This week, the stock market can’t seem to","content":"
Just last Friday, the S&P 500 had closed at a record high. This week, the stock market can’t seem to find its footing, with the major indexes slumping again Tuesday.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 256.33 points, or 0.8%, the S&P 500 fell 0.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite finished off 0.9%.
\n
It’s been a while since the stock market had a meaningful drop, and this one may not actually qualify. This was the S&P 500’s largest drop since just March 23, so the current pullback may not be worth getting excited about. Then again, it could be the start of something bigger. Here are four reasons markets fell today.
\n
Covid Cases are rising globally. The seven-day average hit 628,035 on April 10, up 63% from 384346 on Feb. 28. Global cases have topped 142 million, and India recently reported more than 250,000 cases on its own. The continued spread threatens to overwhelm the positive narrative about vaccines in the U.S. Reports that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the country and that a full lockdown could but put in place has only spooked the market further.
\n
The vaccine narrative is weakening. The market opened lower this morning, but the drop really accelerated when the European Medicines Agency announced that it had found a possible link to very rare cases of blood clots in users of Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) vaccine, and said a warning should be added. That overwhelmed its conclusion that the ‘overall benefit-risk remains positive’ for the vaccine because it could mean fewer people get vaccinated. Even before the latest announcement, confidence was eroding. “It doesn’t seem likely that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is going to completely disappear anytime soon,” JPMorgan strategists concluded in a report released Tuesday. “The lack of a vaccine for those aged under 18 years, the less than 100% take-up of vaccines, the less than 100% efficacy of vaccines and the development of variants mean that the prevalence of infection will remain for a long time, even if at a low level.”
\n
The reopening narrative is weakening. United Airlines (UAL) earnings were worse than expected. The U.S. State Department put 80% of the world’s nations on a “do not travel” list due to high levels of Covid. And the worst performing stocks are part of the reopening trade. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed down 4.4%, American Airlines (AAL) slid 5.5%, Marriott International (MAR) fell 4%, Devon Energy (DVN) slumped 4.8%, and Zions Bancorp (ZION) has tumbled 6.5%. That pretty much says it all right there.
\n
Investors are questioning the economic recovery. At this point, everyone knows that the economic recovery is going to be strong. When even the International Monetary Fund realizes that’s the case, you know it’s consensus. Now, the market is wrestling with whether growth has peaked or if there’s further acceleration ahead. With little economic data to shift the narrative this week, investors are asking “what have you done for me lately.”
\n
None of this means a bear market is ahead of us, and just because investors are embracing a narrative, doesn’t mean that’s how the future plays out. It is the future, after all. But the market is always trying to adjust to greater risk after a massive rally. Perhaps a little more volatility is warranted.
","source":"lsy1610680873436","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Is the Stock Market Down Today? POINTS\n\nElon Musk said Tesla had halted purchases of vehicles with bitcoin due to concerns over the “rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for bitcoin mining.”\nThe cryptocurrency uses more energy than entire countries such as Sweden and Malaysia, according to researchers.\nTreasury Secretary Janet Yellen has also warned about bitcoin’s environmental impact, saying it uses a “staggering” amount of power.\n\nElon Musk’sdecision to stopTeslafrom acceptingbitcoinas payment has led to fresh scrutiny of the cryptocurrency’s environmental impact.\nMusksaid Wednesdaythat Tesla had halted purchases of its vehicles with bitcoin due to concerns over the “rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for bitcoin mining.”\nHe alluded to data from researchers at Cambridge University which shows bitcoin’s electricity usage spiking this year.\nTesla won't sell its bitcoin — the automaker is sitting on$2.5 billion worthof the digital coin — and Musk said it intends to resume transactions with bitcoin once mining \"transitions to more sustainable energy.\"\n\"We are also looking at other cryptocurrencies that use <1% of Bitcoin's energy/transaction,\" Musk said.\nMusk's comments roiled cryptocurrency markets, which haveshed as much as $365.85 billion in valuesince his tweet.\nWhy is Musk worried?\nCritics ofbitcoinhave long been wary of its impact on the environment. The cryptocurrency uses more energy than entire countries such as Sweden and Malaysia, according to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.\nTo understand why bitcoin is so energy-intensive, you have to look at its underlying technology, the blockchain.\nBitcoin's public ledger is decentralized, meaning it isn't controlled by any single authority. It's constantly being updated by a network of computers around the world.\nSo-called miners run purpose-built computers to solve complex math puzzles in order to make a transaction go through. This is the only way to mint new bitcoins.\nMiners do not run this operation for free. They have to shell out huge sums on specialized equipment. A key incentive of bitcoin's model, known as \"proof of work,\" is the promise of being rewarded in some bitcoin if you manage to solve its complex hashing algorithm.\nIt's worth noting thatdogecoin, which has risen wildly in price lately on the back of support from Musk, also uses a proof-of-work mechanism.\nCarol Alexander, a professor at the University of Sussex Business School, explains that bitcoin's mining \"difficulty\" — a measure of the computational effort it takes to mine bitcoin — has been going \"up and up\" over the last three years.\n\"More and more electricity is being used,\" Alexander told CNBC. \"That means that the network difficulty will also be going up (and) more miners are coming in because the hash rate's going up.\"\nBitcoin's price is up almost 70% so far this year. As it goes up in price, the revenue to miners also increases, incentivizing more participants to mine the cryptocurrency.\nMeanwhile, Musk isn't the only one who's worried about the environmental impact of bitcoin. In February, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the digital coin is \"extremely inefficient\" for making transactions and uses a \"staggering\" amount of power.\nDoes bitcoin actually harm the environment?\nIt's complicated. On the one hand, bitcoin's network uses anunfathomable amount of energy. Much of the mining of bitcoin is concentrated in China, whose economy is still heavily reliant on coal.\nLast month, a coal mine in the Xinjiang region flooded and shut down. This took nearly a quarter of bitcoin's hash rate — or computing power — offline, according to crypto industry publicationCoinDesk.\nIn March, China's Inner Mongolia region said it wouldshut down cryptocurrency mining operationsin the region due to concerns over energy consumption.\nOn the other side of the debate, bitcoin investors have attempted to push back on the narrative that it's harmful for the environment.\nWhile it's difficult to determine the energy mix that powers bitcoin, some in the crypto industry say miners are incentivized to use renewables as it's getting cheaper to produce them. In China, the province of Sichuan is known to attract miners due to its cheap electricity and rich hydropower resources.\nLast month,Jack Dorsey'sfintech companySquareand Cathie Wood's Ark Invest put out amemoclaiming that bitcoin will actually drive renewable energy innovation. However, critics said they had avested interestin doing so.\nAlexander said the debate around bitcoin's environmental impact was misguided as most transactions with the digital asset aren't happening on the blockchain.\n\"Almost all the trading is not done on the blockchain,\" she said. \"It's done on secondary markets, centralized exchanges. They're not even recorded on the blockchain.\"\nESG concerns\nRegardless of whether bitcoin is actually a polluter or not, the negative connotations around its energy consumption have worried investors conscious of companies' ethical and environmental responsibilities.\nESG, or environmental, social and corporate governance, has become agrowing trendin financial markets, with portfolio managers increasingly incorporating sustainable investments into their strategies.\nSome Tesla shareholders may be worried that the company is betting big on bitcoin while also claiming to be a green energy company.\n\"Bitcoin backers will be wondering where this leaves the future of the cryptocurrency,\" Laith Khalaf, a financial analyst at investment firm AJ Bell, said in a note Thursday.\n\"Environmental matters are an incredibly sensitive subject right now, and Tesla's move might serve as a wake-up call to businesses and consumers using Bitcoin, who hadn't hitherto considered its carbon footprint,\" Khalaf added.\n\"Tesla's decision certainly puts pressure on other big companies who accept Bitcoin to review their practices, because boardrooms will now be wary about getting it in the ear from ESG investors on the shareholder register.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":95,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":107192666,"gmtCreate":1620449805655,"gmtModify":1704343938392,"author":{"id":"3579475853393952","authorId":"3579475853393952","name":"JohnBuffet","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fa76868c0cb7f04348cb87ff0db18657","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579475853393952","authorIdStr":"3579475853393952"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like
