This is the part of the \"TikTokization\" of society, as real relationships and long-term thinking are increasingly replaced by smartphone apps that are engineered to trigger reward centers in the human brain, whether on Robinhood, TikTok, or Tinder. Somewhere along the way, the majority of investors stopped looking at fundamentals, swapping deep calculation and due diligence with mantras like \"stocks only go up,\" and \"hold the line.\" When stocks get disconnected from their business fundamentals, wealth typically ends up getting transferred. This clearly affects Apple (AAPL), the most popular stock in America. To this point, I have good news and bad news.</p>\n<p>First, the bad news. There are a lot of people who have no idea what they are doing who are being taken advantage of by Wall Street. They're rapid-fire day trading, getting&nbsp;fleeced in SPACs, buying options without knowing what implied volatility is, and loading their retirement accounts with AMC (AMC) and GameStop. The good news is that it's a tremendous advantage to be a long-term economic thinker when so few people are. This can help you make money not only in Apple but in the stock market in general.</p>\n<p><b>Apple Stock Price History</b></p>\n<p>Apple is up big over the last year off of the bear market low but is flat over the last six months. The obsession du-jour is the direction of Treasury yields. For the first time in my career, the Dow and Nasdaq, which are historically highly correlated, move opposite on most days based on how market participants feel about yields and whether the pandemic will last a few more months or not. This is more of the short-term thinking that won't make anyone money in the long run. But over the last year, you can see that Apple's fortunes have mirrored the US economy at large.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/807cda601ea1bc6be4a57a3b5182548d\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"435\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Over longer periods of time, Apple's stock price has reflected the actual business, which has been successful. The business results, along with the valuation you pay for Apple will determine your success as an investor in the stock.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a39d987338524b27749867cfac46f235\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"435\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p><b>Apple Growth Rate and Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Apple's net income has increased from $1.3 billion in FY 2005 to over $57 billion in FY 2020. As you can see from the graph below, the iPhone launch in 2007 was a game-changer for Apple. More recently, Apple's growth in net income has slowed, although they're running over $60 billion annually in net income. Net income is quoted after corporate taxes, so remember that Apple is getting the benefit of a roughly 20 percent increase in income from the Trump tax cuts of 2017.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5dbfd56479bd134400ea2dc32a079c08\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"406\"><span>Source: Statista</span></p>\n<p>You can compare Apple's net income against their market cap of around $2 trillion, and you see that Apple trades for over 35x what it made in FY 2020. There's nothing wrong with Apple, it's a great business, but that's generally pretty expensive for a company whose growth is leveling out. Apple has some positives working in its favor, most importantly that they're expected to earn about 30 percent more in FY 2021 than they did in FY 2020. This brings the valuation down to about 28x its expected earnings, which is still pretty high. Additionally, Apple bulls are quick to remind you that growth in Apple's all-important services segment is driving their earnings and that the&nbsp;new iPhone&nbsp;should sell like hotcakes. It might not be enough, however, to justify the valuation.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0005edbd4f616e1f2557865c40eb4383\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"346\"><span>Source: Macrotrends</span></p>\n<p>Apple trading for this kind of valuation it trades for is a recent development. For most of the 2010s, Apple traded closer to 10x earnings, reaching ~20x before the tech correction of 2018 took it back down. P/E ratios are based on earnings per share, which grew faster than pre-tax net income for two reasons.</p>\n<p>1. Trump's tax cuts in 2017. These increased corporate net income for S&amp;P 500 companies by around 20 percent, per my calculations. The tax cuts also unlocked money that had been trapped offshore, creating a large one-time earnings boost for corporations. Apple shows a clear benefit in its financial statements from the 2017 tax cuts. This is a one-time deal. I'll be blunt – I'm more likely to date a supermodel than corporate tax rates are to be cut further with the US fiscal situation being what it is.</p>\n<p>2. Tim Cook's buyback program. By my calculations, Apple was able to purchase a little over 36 percent of its shares outstanding between&nbsp;September 2012 and their last quarterly report. This was a huge win for Apple shareholders, as the company was able to buy tons of shares on the cheap. Apple earned $3.31 per share last year. If they hadn't bought back any shares, they only would have earned $2.21 per share. The buyback alone increased Apple's earnings per share by nearly 50 percent! And what gave the buyback oxygen was Apple's low valuation for most of the 2010s, allowing them to use cash flow and low-interest debt to cheaply accumulate shares and drive EPS growth.</p>\n<p>With the first tailwind being a one-time event and the second being largely ineffective with Apple's high valuation, if you're going to make a lot of money in Apple shares, you're either going to need to see Apple's net income itself grow, or its PE multiple to rise even higher. I think Apple can grow its net income by 4-5 percent annually over the next 10 years. This seems fair since net income has grown less than this since 2018. With the high valuation, the EPS isn't likely to grow much faster even with buybacks. Based on the business results of Apple and the valuation, I think you can expect a roughly 8 percent annual return by investing in Apple stock at current prices. This isn't enough for me to back up the truck on Apple, but since I've done very well in the past with Apple, the stock never really leaves my radar. What I need to buy Apple at is a price that's more agreeable to me.</p>\n<p><b>When to Buy Apple Stock</b></p>\n<p>My quick and dirty method for estimating stock returns is to take earnings yield plus normalized earnings growth. Historically analysts would use dividend yield instead of earnings yield, but now buybacks are much more common than they were in the past, so it doesn't bias the model in favor of dividends. For me to be interested in Apple, I'd like to see at least double-digit expected returns, and assuming 5 percent EPS growth, Apple would need to trade for 20x earnings or less (i.e. what it normally trades for historically). This implies a price of roughly $93 based on Apple's earnings estimates for next year. Apple trades for over $122 as of my writing this article, so we have a ways to go. Apple will need to trade sideways for a couple of years or see a 25-30 percent correction to hit where I'd like to start accumulating it.</p>\n<p>Given the bipolar history of Apple stock, I think that this is likely to happen at some point. After all, the stock didn't trade above $93 until July of 2020. $93 is just where I would start accumulating, by the way, I'd get more interested as the stock gets cheaper, assuming the fundamentals don't change too much.</p>\n<p>If you don't want to wait for a correction in Apple, I have another idea that I executed in my portfolio. Sometimes companies own large stakes in other companies, and this can present opportunities for patient investors. Michael Burry (of<i>The Big Short</i>fame) recently bought Porsche (OTCPK:POAHY) stock for this reason because they own part of Volkswagen and the sum of the parts is worth more than the whole. After he publicly shared the idea, people started pumping a bunch of money into Porsche stock, which may or may not have corrected the mispricing (you'd have to look at the financials to know for sure). In Apple's case, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) owns a large minority stake in the company. If you pull Berkshire's 13-F, they own ~$117 billion in Apple stock as of the filing, which represents roughly 20 percent of Berkshire's market cap of ~$580 billion. Berkshire is cheaper than Apple and is tied to Apple stock by its ownership stake. I like the optionality of this trade because you get the Apple exposure essentially for free – the stake has little impact on Berkshire's EPS due to Apple's low dividend yield at the moment. If Apple goes down, I'd expect that Berkshire would be able to accumulate more stock which would help in the long run, and if Apple goes up, then it helps raise the floor on the price of Berkshire stock. This clearly affects Apple (AAPL), the most popular stock in America. To this point, I have good news and bad news.\nFirst, the bad news. There are a lot of people who have no idea what they are doing who are being taken advantage of by Wall Street. They're rapid-fire day trading, getting fleeced in SPACs, buying options without knowing what implied volatility is, and loading their retirement accounts with AMC (AMC) and GameStop. The good news is that it's a tremendous advantage to be a long-term economic thinker when so few people are. This can help you make money not only in Apple but in the stock market in general.\nApple Stock Price History\nApple is up big over the last year off of the bear market low but is flat over the last six months. The obsession du-jour is the direction of Treasury yields. For the first time in my career, the Dow and Nasdaq, which are historically highly correlated, move opposite on most days based on how market participants feel about yields and whether the pandemic will last a few more months or not. This is more of the short-term thinking that won't make anyone money in the long run. But over the last year, you can see that Apple's fortunes have mirrored the US economy at large.\nData by YCharts\nOver longer periods of time, Apple's stock price has reflected the actual business, which has been successful. Couples in the highest income tax rate bracket paid a rate of 37% on earnings higher than $628,300, the report said.ProPublica pointed out that billionaires, unlike most other people whose earnings come from conventional wage income, often benefit from \"tax-avoidance strategies beyond the reach of ordinary people.\"And their wealth is often largely based on the rising value of stock and real estate that is not considered taxable unless those assets are sold, the report noted.ProPublica did not disclose how it obtained the tax information cited in the article, but did say that the outlet \"went to considerable lengths to confirm that the information sent to us is accurate.\" CNBC has not independently verified the information in the report.The article said that according to ProPublica's calculations, Buffett's \"true tax rate\" was just 0.1%, or $23.7 million in taxes he paid on wealth growth of $24.3 billion, during the five-year time frame.During that period, Buffett, CEO ofBerkshire Hathaway, reported legally taxable income of $125 million.Bezos, who as founder ofAmazonhas become the world's richest person, paid slightly less than 1% in ProPublica's true tax rate, or $973 million, on wealth growth of $99 billion during the five-year period. Many companies faced adversity throughout the pandemic, and some are still recovering, but not BABA. Through the worst economic environment for businesses to navigate in recent times, BABA generated over $100 billion in revenue and $20 billion in net income during their recent fiscal year. While BABA didn't get the memo about businesses facing challenges amidst the pandemic, the market must not have read BABA's earnings report or crunched the numbers.</p>\n<p>There are two Chinese companies I am bullish on, and BABA is my biggest conviction for appreciation. BABA smashed through the $300 share price level at the end of October 2020, but shareholders have been left confused and disappointed since then. It looked like BABA would turn the corner after a horrible end to 2020 as shares appreciated from $222.36 from the close of 2020 to $270.83 in the middle of February 2021. Still, the markets had other plans, and all shares of BABA have done is disappoint shareholders. If you missed the BABA train, it's time to grab your tickets and climb aboard, and if you purchased BABA during its run to $300 or early 2021 rebound, it might be time to add to your holdings. BABA is going to experience tremendous tailwinds from China's population and economic growth over the next several years, and their printing press is going to need more ink.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/86da7b532f25f563d08490ddc43cbede\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"337\"><span>(Source: Alibaba)</span></p>\n<p><b>The Alibaba printing press is open for business, and it spits out billions</b></p>\n<p>How many companies can say their annual revenue through the pandemic exceeded $100 billion? The $100 billion revenue mark is a prestigious club that companies such as&nbsp;Facebook (FB),PepsiCo (PEP),Procter &amp; Gamble (PG),Target (TGT), and&nbsp;Johnson &amp; Johnson (JNJ)&nbsp;are not part of. BABA, on the other hand, witnessed its revenue increase by 52.11% and smash through $100 billion as they generated $109.47 billion in their recent fiscal year. For the year ending March 2019, BABA's revenue increased by $16.25 billion (40.74%) to $56.15 billion, then for the March 2020 fiscal year, revenue increased another $15.82 billion (28.17%) to $71.97 billion. BABA is in the same boat as Alphabet(NASDAQ:GOOG)(GOOGL), FB, and Amazon (AMZN) as they watched the pandemic push more people to go digital which accelerated their businesses. For BABA, the forced transition to digital helped them achieve $37.5 billion (52.11%) in additional revenue as they finished their March 2021 fiscal year with $109.47 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Since 2013 BABA has not had a year where their annual revenue increase didn't exceed 25% Year over Year (YoY). When you think about that as a growth rate, it's remarkable for a company of BABA's size as this isn't a company chasing its first billion-dollar revenue year. Over the past 5 fiscal years, BABA's annual revenue has increased by $93.8 billion (408.08%) at an average annual rate of 48.25%. Smaller companies considered growth companies would be jealous of these rates, while many large caps are probably envious.</p>\n<p>BABA isn't a one-trick pony that can only generate tens of billions in revenue. BABA can convert right down to the bottom line. Each year BABA has increased its YoY gross profit by a minimum of 10% since 2013. In 2016 BABA generated $10.35 billion in gross profit and, over the next 5 fiscal years, increased its annual gross profit by $34.84 billion (336.68%). BABA has also never fallen below a 40% gross profit margin, Warren Buffett's magic number, as he indicates in<i>Warren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements. On page 34 of the Kindle edition,it says:</i></p>\n<blockquote>\n As a very general rule (and there are exceptions): Companies with gross profit margins of 40% or better tend to be companies with some sort of durable competitive advantage. Companies with gross profit margins below 40% tend to be companies in highly competitive industries, where competition is hurting overall profit margins (there are exceptions here, too).\n</blockquote>\n<p>The gross profit margin is important for investors to evaluate because it reveals how much of a company's revenue goes directly to producing it and if they have a moat around their business. BABA's numbers indicate they have a sufficient moat around their business that is hard to penetrate. With close to a decade of generating over 40% in gross profit margins, investors can expect that BABA's moat will protect its business operations for years to come.</p>\n<p>Moving to the bottom line BABA does a great job at generating profits. In their most recent fiscal year, BABA generated $22.98 billion in net income, converting more than 1/5th (20.99%) of their revenue to pure profits. Since 2013 BABA has only had 1 year where net income decreases YoY. With that track record, many options open up for BABA in the future as their cash stockpile continues to increase.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/41a5e036f023fa4ced7666e06aa1de6b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"444\"><span>(Source: Alibaba)</span></p>\n<p><b>Alibaba will continue to experience tailwinds as China's population and economy expands</b></p>\n<p>Alibaba&nbsp;achieved one billion annual active consumers globally in the fiscal year that ended in March 2021. BABA has 891 million consumers across China's retail marketplace, local consumer services and digital media and entertainment platforms, and approximately 240 million consumers outside China. BABA's annual active consumers in the China retail marketplaces were 811 million as it grew by 85 million YoY. BABA will focus on developing a digital commerce infrastructure that offers an upgraded consumer experience by seamlessly integrating online and offline. Through BABA's infrastructure, countless retailers have digitally transformed their businesses and created multiple retail formats that have enabled new consumption experiences by leveraging consumer insights and technology. BABA's ecosystem, supply chain, and diversified fulfillment services have facilitated an immense digital transformation. By investing in its infrastructure, BABA's customers can now leverage a full range of high-frequency fulfillment services that include on-demand delivery, same-or-next day delivery, and next-day pick-up services for a full range of consumable and physical products.</p>\n<p>BABA will continue to be one of the cornerstones that supports growth within China's economy, which is benefiting from the acceleration of digitalization in all aspects of life and work. China is projected to be the world's largest economy by 2028. The per-capita income in China is expected to grow by roughly 50% from 2020 to 2025.China's average economic growth&nbsp;has been projected to increase at a rate of 5.7% from 2021 to 2025, then slow to 4.5% from 2026 to 2030. As a result,China&nbsp;is on track to join the top 1/3rd of nations and overtake 56 countries in the per capita income rankings by 2025. By the end of 2022, McKinsey&nbsp;predicts&nbsp;that the middle class could expand to 550 million people which is larger than the entire U.S population.</p>\n<p>If the projections for China are correct, this should mean a windfall of cash lining BABA's coffers. It's a simple recipe; when people make more money, they tend to spend more money to enhance their lives and increase their standard of living. As BABA is a dominant force in China's retail sector, they stand to benefit from a growing economy and a larger middle class. At the end of next year, if China has anywhere close to 550 million individuals in the middle class, I believe BABA's revenue and profits will increase significantly. Hence, the prospects of new customers are enormous while reoccurring revenue is generated after the transition occurs.</p>\n<p>In China, cloud infrastructure services are still in the early innings as the entire spend was around $15 billion in 2020. In Q1 of 2021, cloud infrastructure services in&nbsp;China&nbsp;grew by 55% YoY as it reached $6 billion. BABA smashed through the $300 share price level at the end of October 2020, but shareholders have been left confused and disappointed since then. It looked like BABA would turn the corner after a horrible end to 2020 as shares appreciated from $222.36 from the close of 2020 to $270.83 in the middle of February 2021. Still, the markets had other plans, and all shares of BABA have done is disappoint shareholders. If you missed the BABA train, it's time to grab your tickets and climb aboard, and if you purchased BABA during its run to $300 or early 2021 rebound, it might be time to add to your holdings. The $100 billion revenue mark is a prestigious club that companies such as Facebook (FB),PepsiCo (PEP),Procter & Gamble (PG),Target (TGT), and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) are not part of. BABA, on the other hand, witnessed its revenue increase by 52.11% and smash through $100 billion as they generated $109.47 billion in their recent fiscal year. For the year ending March 2019, BABA's revenue increased by $16.25 billion (40.74%) to $56.15 billion, then for the March 2020 fiscal year, revenue increased another $15.82 billion (28.17%) to $71.97 billion. BABA is in the same boat as Alphabet(NASDAQ:GOOG)(GOOGL), FB, and Amazon (AMZN) as they watched the pandemic push more people to go digital which accelerated their businesses. For BABA, the forced transition to digital helped them achieve $37.5 billion (52.11%) in additional revenue as they finished their March 2021 fiscal year with $109.47 billion in revenue.\nSince 2013 BABA has not had a year where their annual revenue increase didn't exceed 25% Year over Year (YoY). When you think about that as a growth rate, it's remarkable for a company of BABA's size as this isn't a company chasing its first billion-dollar revenue year. Over the past 5 fiscal years, BABA's annual revenue has increased by $93.8 billion (408.08%) at an average annual rate of 48.25%. Smaller companies considered growth companies would be jealous of these rates, while many large caps are probably envious.\nBABA isn't a one-trick pony that can only generate tens of billions in revenue. BABA can convert right down to the bottom line. Each year BABA has increased its YoY gross profit by a minimum of 10% since 2013. In 2016 BABA generated $10.35 billion in gross profit and, over the next 5 fiscal years, increased its annual gross profit by $34.84 billion (336.68%). BABA has also never fallen below a 40% gross profit margin, Warren Buffett's magic number, as he indicates inWarren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements. Does Not Mention Bitcoin: +400</p><p>Beesetti said that she sold about $8,000 worth of dogecoin recently to buy a pair of Gucci shoes, an iPhone and upped her position in Ether thar runs on the Ethereum protocol but has otherwise been a steady holder of doge.</p><p>The investor wouldn’t offer specific figures but said that her holdings currently range from 50,000 to 100,000 dogecoin.</p><p>Perhaps unlike some investors in doge, she is under no illusion that it has utility but submits to the possibility that momentum could build in a parody asset to such an extent that it forges its own legitimacy.</p><p>“Doge doesn’t have intrinsic value,” Beesetti said. “The value becomes real if you and a collective group of people believe in it. And in this case, there are more groups and people than before who believe.”</p><p>That said, reality could hit meme coin holders hard come Sunday morning, at least one analyst said.</p><p>“Post-SNL, some crypto traders could abandon short-term&nbsp;Dogecoin&nbsp;bets once it becomes clear that it is not skyrocketing to the moon or at the heavily eyed $1 level,” wrote Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a research note.</p><p>The analyst also notes that strong conviction of dogecoin investors,known as hodlers in the crypto world, could defy logic and keep prices buoyant.</p><p>“The retail-army of traders that have been committed to Doge might remain stubbornly hodlers, so we shouldn’t be surprised if a sell the event reaction does not happen,” the Oanda strategist said.</p><p>How it all plays out for dogecoin is anyone’s guess.</p><p>“It’s just a meme currency but sometimes the most entertaining outcome becomes the reality,” Beesetti said.</p><p>That meme currency has enjoyed a spectacular ride compared against most other assets. During the late 1980s, nearly a third of the nation’s savings and loan associations failed, ending with a taxpayer bailout — in 2021 terms — of about $265 billion.</p>\n<p>In 1997-1998, financial crises in Asia and Russia led to the near meltdown of the largest hedge fund in the U.S. —Long-Term Capital Management(LTCM). Its reach and operating practices were such that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said that when LTCM failed, “he had never seen anything in his lifetime that compared to the terror” he felt. LTCM was deemed “too big to fail,” and he engineered a bailout by 14 major U.S. financial institutions.</p>\n<p>Exactly a decade later, too much leverage by some of those very institutions, and the bursting of a U.S. real estate bubble, led to the near collapse of the U.S. financial system. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.</p>\n<p>The trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different.&nbsp;Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?</p>\n<p>A family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.</p>\n<p><b>Unregulated money managers</b></p>\n<p>Here’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)</p>\n<p>This appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player&nbsp;Vipshop Holdings&nbsp;Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company&nbsp;GSX Techedu&nbsp;Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS&nbsp;Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.</p>\n<p>The problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including&nbsp;Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%,&nbsp;Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc.&nbsp;NMR,+1.87%.</p>\n<p>But since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre&nbsp;reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.</p>\n<p><b>Danger of counterparty risk</b></p>\n<p>This is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.</p>\n<p>So is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.</p>\n<p>One peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.</p>\n<p>But federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.</p>\n<p><b>Yellen on the case</b></p>\n<p>This issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”</p>\n<p>Most financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.</p>\n<p>The Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis. During the late 1980s, nearly a third of the nation’s savings and loan associations failed, ending with a taxpayer bailout — in 2021 terms — of about $265 billion.\nIn 1997-1998, financial crises in Asia and Russia led to the near meltdown of the largest hedge fund in the U.S. —Long-Term Capital Management(LTCM). Its reach and operating practices were such that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said that when LTCM failed, “he had never seen anything in his lifetime that compared to the terror” he felt. LTCM was deemed “too big to fail,” and he engineered a bailout by 14 major U.S. financial institutions.\nExactly a decade later, too much leverage by some of those very institutions, and the bursting of a U.S. real estate bubble, led to the near collapse of the U.S. financial system. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.\nThe trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different. Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?\nA family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.\nUnregulated money managers\nHere’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)\nThis appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player Vipshop Holdings Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company GSX Techedu Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and Discovery Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.\nThe problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%, Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc. NMR,+1.87%.\nBut since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.\nDanger of counterparty risk\nThis is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.\nSo is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.\nOne peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.\nBut federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.\nYellen on the case\nThis issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”\nMost financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.\nThe Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis. While the troubled economy has had some effect on the stock price, much of the reason for its current reasonable valuation lies in concerns about its fiscal exposure to multiple lawsuits it is facing.</p><p>Over decades, 3M has established itself in categories critical to enterprises and consumers. That&#39;s put it in a position to consistently deliver revenue topping $30 billion annually. More impressively, 3M has improved efficiencies in its business to expand its earnings per share from $6.72 in 2013 to $10.18 in 2022. Of course, rising profits allowed management to return capital to shareholders. Admittedly, the outcome of the litigation is a justifiable reason for the stock&#39;s decreased valuation, but the market may be overreacting to the news. This provides an excellent opportunity for long-term investors to capitalize on the lower price to add this dividend stock to their portfolios.</p><h2>CarParts.com: An under-the-radar e-commerce disruptor</h2><p><b>Jeremy Bowman (CarParts.com): </b>CarParts.com&#39;s revenue soared during the early stages of the pandemic, as the company was at the crossroads of two powerful pandemic tailwinds: e-commerce and auto parts. Consumers looked to online retail as they avoided shopping in stores, and auto parts sales also jumped as consumers took advantage of the extra time on their hands to fix up their vehicles. As a result, CarParts.com, the online auto parts retailer formerly known as U.S. Auto Parts, saw revenue growth nearly double in the fourth quarter of 2020 before decelerating as demand and the pandemic disruption normalized.</p><p>Even as pandemic concerns ease, CarParts.com continues to grow its top line by double-digit percentages, taking market share in the industry, and it&#39;s improving its margins on the bottom line as well. In its third-quarter earnings report, revenue rose 16% year over year to $164.8 million, and gross profit increased 19% to $56.1 million. Its adjusted EBITDA also nearly tripled to $6.3 million.</p><p>CarParts.com grew its business by adding new warehouses around the country so it can serve most of its customers with two-day delivery. It&#39;s also innovating with a new Do-It-For-Me service where the company is partnering with mechanics around the country who will seamlessly service customers who bring in CarParts.com parts, allowing them to save money as CarParts.com private-labels most of its merchandise, allowing it to undercut competitors on price.</p><p>Additionally, the company should benefit from the current economic environment, as high interest rates are making new cars more expensive, encouraging car owners to repair their current vehicles rather than replace them.
