When brick-and-mortar stores closed, Amazon posted record profits, drew more than 200 million Prime loyalty subscribers, and recruited over 500,000 workers to keep up with surging demand.</p>\n<p>Now, the company is facing the tough task of climbing higher still. While revenue grew 44% in the first quarter of this year, that figure dropped to 27% for the period ended June 30. Sales may only grow as much as 16% in the third quarter, Amazon said.</p>\n<p>Brian Olsavsky, Amazon’s chief financial officer, attributed this to a difficult comparison to last year, when consumers stayed more indoors and relied on e-commerce for their everyday needs. In the United States and Europe, customers are now out and about.</p>\n<p>They are “doing other things besides shopping,” he said.</p>\n<p>Amazon expects this lower growth to continue for the next few quarters, Olsavsky told reporters.</p>\n<p>The outlook comes just after Jassy inherited Amazon’s top job on July 5, which has never been bigger or more complex. Last quarter Amazon announced a deal to buy the film studio MGM for $8.5 billion, expanding in Hollywood at the same time as it is running a grocery chain, building a healthcare business and facing scrutiny from regulators worldwide.</p>\n<p>Olsavsky said the company hopes COVID-19 will subside and that the economy will continue to bounce back, but it will require masks for vaccinated staff if that becomes necessary.</p>\n<p>While other tech companies this week such as Alphabet Inc and Facebook Inc announced they will require vaccines for workers returning to their offices, Amazon has yet to announce a vaccine requirement for employees in its offices -- or warehouse workers and drivers.</p>\n<p>Amazon has grappled with workplace tumult in recent months, including staff protests over pandemic safety precautions and a high-profile, failed unionization bid in a facility in Bessemer, Alabama.</p>\n<p>Brian Yarbrough, an analyst with Edward Jones, said it was “not feasible” for Amazon to maintain its growth.</p>\n<p>“No doubt, online retail will probably slow down to that growth somewhere in the 10%-12% range. It’s still phenomenal growth when you think of the sheer size of the business,” he said. “Obviously the pandemic helped them, but they’re not going to be able to grow that rapidly on top of those numbers.”</p>\n<p>LABOR SHORTAGE</p>\n<p>Revenue was $113 billion for the second quarter, shy of analysts’ average estimate of $115 billion.</p>\n<p>The world’s biggest online retailer had moved its annual marketing blitz, Prime Day, to June this year, hoping to peddle more goods before shoppers left town on summer vacations. Tesla boosted its performance by cutting features it said were unused or unneeded and raising U.S. vehicle prices.</p>\n<p>Shares of the world’s most valuable automaker rose 1.5% in extended trade.</p>\n<p>In a call with investors and analysts, Tesla executives said that volume production growth will depend on parts availability, and Musk cautioned the shortage of semiconductors will continue.</p>\n<p>“The global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,” Musk said.</p>\n<p>Still, Musk said Tesla expects to launch production this year of the Model Y SUV at factories under construction in Texas and Germany. He said the company expects battery cell suppliers to double production next year.</p>\n<p>Despite the pandemic and the supply chain crisis, Tesla posted record deliveries during the quarter, thanks to sales of cheaper models including Model 3 sedans and Model Ys.</p>\n<p>The carmaker, led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, said revenue jumped to $11.96 billion from $6.04 billion a year earlier, when its California factory was shut down for more than six weeks due to local lockdown orders to fight the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Analysts had expected revenue of about $11.3 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Excluding items, Tesla posted a profit of $1.45 per share, easily topping analyst expectations for a profit of 98 cents per share.</p>\n<p>Tesla said operating income rose with volume growth and cost reduction, which offset higher supply chain costs, lower regulatory credit revenue and other items including $23 million in losses on investment in cryptocurrency bitcoin.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s profitability has often relied on selling regulatory credits to other automakers, but in the second quarter, Tesla was profitable without these credits for the first time since the end of 2019. Its GAAP net income was $1.14 billion in the second quarter. Revenue from the credits only totaled $354 million.</p>\n<p>“Tesla impressed with its numbers, as most of its revenue came from vehicle sales,” Jesse Cohen, senior analyst at Investing.com, said.</p>\n<p>Carmaker Stellantis expects to achieve its European carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions targets this year without environmental credits bought from Tesla.</p>\n<p>Tesla said it said it has delayed the launch of the Semi truck program to 2022 to focus on starting factories and due to limited availability of battery cells and other parts this year.</p>\n<p>But the company’s new 4680 batteries are not ready for volume production; executives said it was difficult to predict when technological challenges would be resolved.</p>\n<p>In an aside, Musk said he “most likely will not be on earnings calls” going forward to discuss financial results with investors and analysts. Tesla boosted its performance by cutting features it said were unused or unneeded and raising U.S. vehicle prices.\nShares of the world’s most valuable automaker rose 1.5% in extended trade.\nIn a call with investors and analysts, Tesla executives said that volume production growth will depend on parts availability, and Musk cautioned the shortage of semiconductors will continue.\n“The global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,” Musk said.\nStill, Musk said Tesla expects to launch production this year of the Model Y SUV at factories under construction in Texas and Germany. The Federal Open Market Committee vote was unanimous.</p>\n<p>The more aggressive signal from the Fed’s forecasts saw the dollar rise, stocks decline and yields on 10-year Treasuries jump.</p>\n<p>“It’s a hawkish surprise,” said Thomas Costerg, senior U.S. economist at Pictet Wealth Management, referring to the rate projections. “We are looking at a Fed that seems positively surprised by the speed of vaccinations and the ongoing withdrawal of social-distancing measures.”</p>\n<p>The quarterly projections showed 13 of 18 officials favored at least one rate increase by the end of 2023, versus seven in March. Eleven officials saw at least two hikes by the end of that year. In addition, seven of them saw a move as early as 2022, up from four.</p>\n<p>“The dots should be taken with a big grain of salt,” Powell said, referring to the interest-rate forecasts. He cautioned that discussions about raising rates would be “highly premature.”</p>\n<p>The Fed marked up its inflation forecasts through the end of 2023. Officials see their preferred measure of price pressures rising 3.4% in 2021 compared with a March projection of 2.4%. The 2022 forecast rose to 2.1% from 2%, and the 2023 estimate was raised to 2.2% from 2.1%.</p>\n<p>Consumer-price pressures have proven hotter than expected over the last two months. Anything Musk does to make buying electrics easier is good for Tesla. Besides, Tesla could make a lot of money by opening its network. Although Tesla didn’t respond to a question about potential pricing, charging won’t be free, and refusing to let others use the system would be like a gas station only servicing Fords. And charging eventually will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.</p>\n<p>Then there’s the free publicity and advertising. Opening up the charging network shows Tesla is interested in overall EV adoption and not just in selling its own vehicles. That’s positive for the brand. And it means that thousands of EV buyers will be pulling up to a Tesla logo, again and again.</p>\n<p>Investors brushed off the tweet. Tesla closed at $643.38 Friday, basically flat on the week, with earnings ahead. That’s probably right. Former Wall Street analyst and executive Black has amassed 80,000 Twitter followers for his views on stocks, including Tesla, which he owns shares in. “We like the move,” adds Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, also a Tesla bull. He rates the stock a Buy, with a $1,000 price target. “While some will view it as letting competition in on Tesla’s supercharger moat, we disagree…”\nFor all the competition between their makers, EVs account for less than 5% of all new cars sold in the U.S. The larger struggle remains between electric- and gasoline-powered vehicles. Anything Musk does to make buying electrics easier is good for Tesla. Besides, Tesla could make a lot of money by opening its network. Although Tesla didn’t respond to a question about potential pricing, charging won’t be free, and refusing to let others use the system would be like a gas station only servicing Fords. And charging eventually will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.\nThen there’s the free publicity and advertising. Opening up the charging network shows Tesla is interested in overall EV adoption and not just in selling its own vehicles. That’s positive for the brand. And it means that thousands of EV buyers will be pulling up to a Tesla logo, again and again.\nInvestors brushed off the tweet. Tesla closed at $643.38 Friday, basically flat on the week, with earnings ahead. That’s probably right. Tesla boosted its performance by cutting features it said were unused or unneeded and raising U.S. vehicle prices.</p>\n<p>Shares of the world’s most valuable automaker rose 1.5% in extended trade.</p>\n<p>In a call with investors and analysts, Tesla executives said that volume production growth will depend on parts availability, and Musk cautioned the shortage of semiconductors will continue.</p>\n<p>“The global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,” Musk said.</p>\n<p>Still, Musk said Tesla expects to launch production this year of the Model Y SUV at factories under construction in Texas and Germany. He said the company expects battery cell suppliers to double production next year.</p>\n<p>Despite the pandemic and the supply chain crisis, Tesla posted record deliveries during the quarter, thanks to sales of cheaper models including Model 3 sedans and Model Ys.</p>\n<p>The carmaker, led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, said revenue jumped to $11.96 billion from $6.04 billion a year earlier, when its California factory was shut down for more than six weeks due to local lockdown orders to fight the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Analysts had expected revenue of about $11.3 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Excluding items, Tesla posted a profit of $1.45 per share, easily topping analyst expectations for a profit of 98 cents per share.</p>\n<p>Tesla said operating income rose with volume growth and cost reduction, which offset higher supply chain costs, lower regulatory credit revenue and other items including $23 million in losses on investment in cryptocurrency bitcoin.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s profitability has often relied on selling regulatory credits to other automakers, but in the second quarter, Tesla was profitable without these credits for the first time since the end of 2019. Its GAAP net income was $1.14 billion in the second quarter. Revenue from the credits only totaled $354 million.</p>\n<p>“Tesla impressed with its numbers, as most of its revenue came from vehicle sales,” Jesse Cohen, senior analyst at Investing.com, said.</p>\n<p>Carmaker Stellantis expects to achieve its European carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions targets this year without environmental credits bought from Tesla.</p>\n<p>Tesla said it said it has delayed the launch of the Semi truck program to 2022 to focus on starting factories and due to limited availability of battery cells and other parts this year.</p>\n<p>But the company’s new 4680 batteries are not ready for volume production; executives said it was difficult to predict when technological challenges would be resolved.</p>\n<p>In an aside, Musk said he “most likely will not be on earnings calls” going forward to discuss financial results with investors and analysts. Tesla boosted its performance by cutting features it said were unused or unneeded and raising U.S. vehicle prices.\nShares of the world’s most valuable automaker rose 1.5% in extended trade.\nIn a call with investors and analysts, Tesla executives said that volume production growth will depend on parts availability, and Musk cautioned the shortage of semiconductors will continue.\n“The global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,” Musk said.\nStill, Musk said Tesla expects to launch production this year of the Model Y SUV at factories under construction in Texas and Germany. Yes, I'm looking at you, <b>AMC Entertainment</b>.</p>\n<p>Most investors innately know this is the smart-money move to make when the broad market is closer to a major high than a major low. Some investors, however, just need to hear someone else say it. I just did.</p>\n<h3>2. I'm prioritizing cash over equities</h3>\n<p>At first glance, this seems a lot like the aforementioned move -- backing off on my exposure to riskier equities. After all, if I'm selling anything, those proceeds are inherently turned into cash anyway.</p>\n<p>To be clear, however, I'm not merely swapping out my more speculative, vulnerable names for more reliable blue chips. I'm reducing my overall exposure to the market by converting a sizable stake of my holdings to cash.</p>\n<p>It's not always a fully understood (or even believed) facet of investing, but \"safe\" stocks like consumer goods names and utilities companies aren't actually protection from a correction. Shares of consumer packaged goods giant <b>Procter &amp; Gamble</b> fell nearly 24% between last year's February high and March low when the coronavirus began to spread across the world, including within the U.S. Utility name <b>The Southern Company</b> fell 39% during this timeframe. Both recovered -- and then some -- but neither actually offered any true defense from sweeping weakness.</p>\n<p>The point is, during market corrections, there's really no place to hide. You'll just have to let the long-term holdings you're committed to take their lumps on faith they'll bounce back. If you don't have that faith with any particular stock, just replace it with cash until the dust settles.</p>\n<h3>3. I'm adding (a little) gold</h3>\n<p>While most stocks are going to be dragged lower by a market-wide correction, not every sort of holding is a stock. There are also bonds and commodities, which still trade independently of equities. That doesn't preclude them from pulling back if and when the stock market does. But if they do peel back, they're doing so independently of the broad market.</p>\n<p>I'm not bothering with bonds right now. Interest rates are pointlessly low, and with inflation seemingly on the verge of racing out of control, bonds are little more than a coin toss at this time anyway.</p>\n<p>Commodities, however, are a different story. If anything, they've become bigger movers against a rising inflation backdrop and a Federal Reserve that's being increasingly pressured to respond. Should stocks tank, commodities -- already pumped and primed -- may see a swell of demand that drives prices higher. The easiest way to plug into this dynamic is with a simple pick like the <b>SPDR Gold Trust</b>.</p>\n<h3>4. Mostly, I'm doing nothing</h3>\n<p>Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'm doing nothing about a possible market correction.</p>\n<p>You read that right.</p>\n<p>There are two schools of thought behind the decision to do nothing rather than trying to evade the impact of a correction. The first of these is the simple fact that most of my holdings really are long-haul positions I had (and have) every intention of hanging onto through bear markets. One of the greatest upsides of a legitimate buy-and-hold approach is that you don't even have to worry about temporary headwinds.</p>\n<p>The other idea at work here is the fact that guessing the market's next near-term reversal is just darn difficult to do ... so much so that most people don't do it very well. Indeed, the effort to time the stock market's peaks and valleys often does more harm than good, by virtue of getting you out too soon or too late, or getting you back in too soon or too late. The market's going to do what the market's going to do in its own time, and it's<i> not</i> going to telegraph what's around the corner to anyone.
