ease","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1191373397","media":"Reuters","summary":"(Reuters) -Qualcomm Inc on Wednesday predicted a rise in sales of chips for 5G phones, including App","content":"
(Reuters) -Qualcomm Inc on Wednesday predicted a rise in sales of chips for 5G phones, including Apple Inc’s iPhone, as the company said it had mitigated supply shortfalls that have contributed to a global chip shortage.
\n
Qualcomm total revenues rose 63% to nearly $8 billion, boosted by soaring sales of chips for connected devices that hit $1.4 billion.
\n
The San Diego, California-based company is the biggest supplier of mobile phone chips in the world and the leader in 5G technology, supplying modem chips that help iPhones connect to wireless data networks and the modems and central processors for much of the Android market.
\n
Shares were up 2.5% to $146 in after-market trading following the results, which could alleviate some concerns among investors about the impact of the shortage on the smart phone market, including the iPhone.
\n
Qualcomm Chief Executive Officer Cristiano Amon told investors during a conference call that the company’s efforts to secure its chips from multiple manufacturing partners were making progress bolstering supplies, with the first shipments of significant volume in the fiscal third quarter and more to come in the coming months.
\n
“We’re still on track to materially improve supply by the end of the calendar year,” Amon said.
\n
The company is also benefiting from the exit from the global smartphone market of China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. Huawei’s flagship models did not use Qualcomm chips but its rivals, who are now snapping up market share, mostly do.
\n
Qualcomm has boosted sales of other chips, such as radio-frequency chips that augment its 5G phone chips and whose sales have doubled in the past year. Sales are also growing for a variety of chips for cars and for “internet of things,” or IoT, applications.
\n
Qualcomm said on Wednesday it expects sales of those chips to hit $10 billion this fiscal year, up from $6 billion the previous year. The company also said it expects adjusted profits of $8.24 per share for its fiscal 2021, nearly double the year before.
\n
Qualcomm’s chip revenue forecast for the current fiscal fourth quarter had a midpoint of $7.25 billion, compared with analyst estimates of $6.83 billion, according to Refinitiv data.
\n
CHIP SHORTAGE
\n
Amon said even as its own bottlenecks ease as it brings on more manufacturing partners, some of Qualcomm’s customers cannot find the supporting chips from other vendors that they need to make full devices.
\n
“We continue to see strong demand in every single business outpacing supply,” he said on the call.
\n
Apple on Tuesday predicted the chip shortage would start to hit its iPhone in the fourth quarter.
\n
On Wednesday, Qualcomm said that global sales of 5G handsets for 2021 was likely to come in at the higher end of its forecast of 450 to 550 million handsets. That means that phone makers are likely directing any chips that are in short supply toward production of their more profitable 5G devices. Apple shares rose 0.14% in after-hours trading after Qualcomm’s results.
\n
“While there remain some parts tightness in some periphery chips in the smartphone sector, we don’t think its material enough to cause any meaningful downside, as the industry will prioritize the supply for 5G instead of 4G,” said Kinngai Chan, an analyst at Summit Insights Group.
\n
Qualcomm forecast overall sales and adjusted profits with midpoints of $8.8 billion and $2.25 per share, above estimates of $8.50 billion and $2.04 per share, according to Refinitiv data.
\n
The company predicted revenue with a midpoint of $1.55 billion from its patent licensing business, compared with analyst expectations of $1.56 billion, according to Refinitiv data.
\n
For the fiscal third quarter ended June 27, Qualcomm said overall adjusted revenues and adjusted profits were $8 billion and $1.92 per share, higher than estimates of $7.58 billion and $1.68 per share, according to Refinitiv data.
\n
Mobile handset chips remain Qualcomm’s biggest seller, increasing 57% to hit $3.86 billion in the quarter.
\n
“Qualcomm has done a phenomenal job in driving the 5G ecosystem. For sure it’s moving a lot faster than 4G,” said Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight.
\n
Sales of other chips have also been expanding, with radio frequency chips and IoT chips reaching sales of $957 million and $1.4 billion, up 114% and 83% from a year earlier, respectively.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Huawei’s flagship models did not use Qualcomm chips but its rivals, who are now snapping up market share, mostly do.\nQualcomm has boosted sales of other chips, such as radio-frequency chips that augment its 5G phone chips and whose sales have doubled in the past year. Sales are also growing for a variety of chips for cars and for “internet of things,” or IoT, applications.\nQualcomm said on Wednesday it expects sales of those chips to hit $10 billion this fiscal year, up from $6 billion the previous year. The company also said it expects adjusted profits of $8.24 per share for its fiscal 2021, nearly double the year before.\nQualcomm’s chip revenue forecast for the current fiscal fourth quarter had a midpoint of $7.25 billion, compared with analyst estimates of $6.83 billion, according to Refinitiv data.\nCHIP SHORTAGE\nAmon said even as its own bottlenecks ease as it brings on more manufacturing partners, some of Qualcomm’s customers cannot find the supporting chips from other vendors that they need to make full devices.\n“We continue to see strong demand in every single business outpacing supply,” he said on the call.\nApple on Tuesday predicted the chip shortage would start to hit its iPhone in the fourth quarter.\nOn Wednesday, Qualcomm said that global sales of 5G handsets for 2021 was likely to come in at the higher end of its forecast of 450 to 550 million handsets. That means that phone makers are likely directing any chips that are in short supply toward production of their more profitable 5G devices. Apple shares rose 0.14% in after-hours trading after Qualcomm’s results.\n“While there remain some parts tightness in some periphery chips in the smartphone sector, we don’t think its material enough to cause any meaningful downside, as the industry will prioritize the supply for 5G instead of 4G,” said Kinngai Chan, an analyst at Summit Insights Group.\nQualcomm forecast overall sales and adjusted profits with midpoints of $8.8 billion and $2.25 per share, above estimates of $8.50 billion and $2.04 per share, according to Refinitiv data.\nThe company predicted revenue with a midpoint of $1.55 billion from its patent licensing business, compared with analyst expectations of $1.56 billion, according to Refinitiv data.\nFor the fiscal third quarter ended June 27, Qualcomm said overall adjusted revenues and adjusted profits were $8 billion and $1.92 per share, higher than estimates of $7.58 billion and $1.68 per share, according to Refinitiv data.\nMobile handset chips remain Qualcomm’s biggest seller, increasing 57% to hit $3.86 billion in the quarter.\n“Qualcomm has done a phenomenal job in driving the 5G ecosystem. For sure it’s moving a lot faster than 4G,” said Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight.\nSales of other chips have also been expanding, with radio frequency chips and IoT chips reaching sales of $957 million and $1.4 billion, up 114% and 83% from a year earlier, respectively.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":72,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":175013487,"gmtCreate":1626998307449,"gmtModify":1703482019884,"author":{"id":"3580080885110737","authorId":"3580080885110737","name":"Dav888","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/faaead3d288ad17d5d7e0fefdcf125a6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580080885110737","authorIdStr":"3580080885110737"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Awesome ","listText":"Awesome ","text":"Awesome","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/175013487","repostId":"2153671933","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2153671933","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1626998050,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2153671933?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-23 07:54","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Uber's freight unit to buy Transplace for $2.25 bln","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2153671933","media":"Reuters","summary":"July 22 (Reuters) - Uber Technologies Inc said on Thursday its freight unit will buy transportation ","content":"
July 22 (Reuters) - Uber Technologies Inc said on Thursday its freight unit will buy transportation logistics company Transplace for about $2.25 billion.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Without a cord, the earbud gets its power from a tiny cylindrical battery that has about 1% of the capacity of an iPhone’s battery.\nBut lithium-ion batteries, like those used by the AirPods, wear out the more they are used.\nSome owners have noticed that, after a few years, used AirPods eventually will last only an hour or so before needing to be recharged -- a big decay from the four-to-five-hour battery life they have when new. Because each AirPod is so small and so tightly packed into its housing, it’s almost impossible to swap out the old battery for a new one. Most people give up and just buy a new pair.\nThe limited lifespan of AirPods is exactly the kind of problem that the “right-to-repair” movement wants to fix. Repair shops and lobbyists that support repair reform want lawmakers to implement a variety of rules, including increased access to manuals and official parts and consumer protections around warranties.\nBut one of their most important requests is for companies to design products with repair in mind, instead of packing gadgets with unlabeled parts and sticking them together with glue, forcing users to use a knife to take them apart.\nThis desire puts repair advocates at odds with hardware companies like Apple, whose business models depend on customers upgrading to the latest model every few years. When Apple offered cheap iPhone battery repairs a few years ago, it hurt sales as consumers were able to hang on to their old phones for longer instead of upgrading. Apple also charges customers for repairs and extended warranties.\n“We design our products for durability in order to minimize the need for repair,” Apple wrote in an environmental report earlier this year. “But in the instance a repair is needed, we believe our customers should have convenient access to safe and reliable repair services, to get their product back up and running as quickly as possible.”\nThe right-to-repair movement gains steam\nPolicymakers have started to engage more closely with right-to-repair advocates in recent years. State-level bills have been introduced in a majority of states, but electronics companies have lobbied against them and none have passed.\nIn May, the Federal Trade Commission released a 56-page report on repair restrictions, concluding that repair restrictions have “steered consumers into manufacturers’ repair networks or to replace products before the end of their useful lives” — exactly the problem users are running into with their AirPods.\nThe Biden administration on Friday ordered the FTC to write new regulations targeted at limiting manufacturers’ ability to hamper independent or do-it-yourself repairs as part of a sweeping executive order. New repair rules have not yet been drafted.\n“Tech and other companies impose restrictions on self and third-party repairs, making repairs more costly and time-consuming, such as by restricting the distribution of parts, diagnostics, and repair tools,” the White House wrote in a fact sheet about the order on Friday, linking to a story about fixing Apple products. Apple declined to comment on the White House executive order.\nThe FTC has not said what it plans to do, but repair advocates want a few key policy changes, as detailed in its May report. They want companies to be required to make official replacement parts available. They want access to tools that could make repairs easier without reverse-engineering the tools or parts themselves. And ultimately, they want products to be designed with longer lifespans.\nApple is not the only company that would be affected by these policies. Much of the recent pressure is on medical device companies and tractor manufacturers. But given Apple’s ubiquity, it has become a poster child for repair, especially because it promotes its environmental efforts as a corporate value.\nApple has launched a program it calls the “Independent Repair Program” which gives repair shops the option to enter into a certification process and contract with Apple in order to get access to authentic Apple parts, tools and manuals.\nApple has also reduced the price of its battery replacement for iPhones, and recent models have been designed to make it easier to replace a battery or cracked screen, according to iFixit. Plus, compared to other consumer electronics companies, Apple has a large existing network of stores and authorized repair shops.\nStill, many Apple products remain challenging to repair at home or as a business with no contact with Apple.\nThe only AirPods battery replacement company\niFixit, a company that provides disassembly instructions and sells replacement parts for gadgets, gives AirPods models a score of zero out of 10 for repairability. According to iFixit, repairing these earbuds involves soldering, hot air guns and slicing through glue — that is, if replacement battery parts are even available. In the end, a would-be home repairer would have to put the four-gram computer back together again.\nApple provides “battery service” for AirPods, at the cost of $49 per earbud. But functionally, Apple simply gives you a replacement pair, and the old earbuds are recycled. It’s not a repair, it’s a replacement. And it’s expensive. AirPods originally cost $159, so opting for battery service costs more than half of the price of a new pair.\nApple sold about 72.8 million AirPods units in 2020, according to a CounterPoint research estimate, so tens of millions of consumers will face the same lack of choice in the coming years.\nPodSwap is a Miami company founded by Emma Stritzinger and Emily Alpert which aims to keep AirPods “out of the landfill.” They’re not associated with Apple.\nThey believe they’re the only company performing AirPod battery replacements, although other companies “refurbish” old AirPods, the founders told CNBC. The company was formed after the founders experienced dying AirPods themselves and thought that upgrading or replacing them would be wasteful and impractical.\nI recently replaced a pair of AirPods that were only holding a charge for 45 minutes -- too short to complete a phone call. I paid $59 on PodSwap’s Shopify site and a few days later received a replacement pair of AirPods with new batteries. They weren’t my old AirPods, they were another set that had their batteries replaced.\nAlong with those new pods, PodSwap includes a box and a return label. It wants your old AirPods back. It then cleans and sanitizes the old pair, puts in new batteries and sends them out to the next person who wants to change the battery in their old AirPods.\nBut PodSwap faces many challenges that show why repair advocates want new rules. Alpert said the design of the AirPod makes it challenging for repair shops or companies like theirs to do a lot of battery replacements. PodSwap’s process uses both robotics and manual labor, the founders said.\n“The process was developed through trial and error and a large number of units were ‘sacrificed’ and ultimately recycled. One major challenge we faced was overcoming the uniqueness of this product. Each AirPod is assembled with slight differences, which creates complexity in the disassembly,” Alpert said.\nPodSwap plans to soon offer service for the AirPods Pro, a newer model that costs $249 and are, surprisingly, powered by a standard-sized coin battery.\nBut the AirPods Pro have many of the same problems as the first model — tight tolerances, potential damage while taking them apart, a lack of replacement parts, and a design that suggests the product was always designed to last a limited time.\n“We have found the AirPods Pro’s batteries to be more difficult to replace,” Alpert said. “The ergonomic design and tight unforgiving tolerances make it exceptionally challenging to replace the batteries repeatedly, with a high degree of efficiency.”\nPodSwap wasn’t totally seamless for me — I got sent a combination of “first generation” and “second generation” AirPods. They caused my iPhone to send error messages, but I sent an email to PodSwap and a day or two later I got a second replacement set, which worked.\nAfter that, I sent my first replacement set and my old AirPods back. The AirPods I received look and work like new.\nI plan on trying to get another four years out of them.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":21,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":899702237,"gmtCreate":1628213562629,"gmtModify":1703503243475,"author":{"id":"3580080885110737","authorId":"3580080885110737","name":"Dav888","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/faaead3d288ad17d5d7e0fefdcf125a6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580080885110737","authorIdStr":"3580080885110737"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Awesome ","listText":"Awesome ","text":"Awesome","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/899702237","repostId":"2157456017","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2157456017","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1628204156,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2157456017?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-06 06:55","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nasdaq, S&P 500, set records as jobless claims decline","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2157456017","media":"Reuters","summary":"* Nasdaq, S&P 500 close at record highs\n* Layoff at lowest in over 21 years\n* Healthcare and materia","content":"
* Nasdaq, S&P 500 close at record highs
\n
* Layoff at lowest in over 21 years
\n
* Healthcare and materials sectoral losers on S&P 500
\n
Aug 5 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq and S&P 500 closed at record levels on Thursday after a spate of strong corporate earnings and a further decline in U.S. unemployment claims last week, as investors weighed concerns of the surge of the Delta variant ahead of Friday's job's report.
\n
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 14,000 to 385,000 in the week ended July 31, while layoffs dropped to their lowest level in more than 21 years last month as companies held on to their workers amid a labor shortage, the Labor Department's report showed.
\n
\"The directional change has continued to be improving in the last few weeks and now it's a new low since beginning the pandemic,\" said Keith Buchanan, portfolio manager at Globalt Investments in Atlanta, Georgia. \"I think that's what (is) kind of leading to some optimism today and earnings to this point have been positive.\"
\n
Nine of the 11 major S&P 500 sector indexes rose, with healthcare stocks in the red as Cigna Corp slipped 10.9% after predicting a bigger hit to full-year earnings from the pandemic.
\n
Focus will now shift to the jobs report for July on Friday.
