As our economy opens up further, more people are likely to start elective dental procedures, such as tooth straightening treatments. Meanwhile, the number of orthodontists and general practitioner dentists using theInvisalign system stateside is on the rise. Therefore, the company is likely to keep growing for many quarters to come. The auto industry, as well as many other sectors, are under pressure due to the chip shortage worldwide.</p>\n<p>YTD, Ford shares are up over 32%. For hotels, revenue per available room is the key measure of top-line performance.</p>\n<p>Hiltonreported first quarter resultson May 5.Total revenue fell more than 54% to $874 million. Revenue per available room declined about 38% from a year earlier. Net loss was $109 million.</p>\n<p>CEO Christopher J. Nassetta remarked, “While rising COVID-19 cases and tightened travel restrictions, particularly across Europe and our Asia Pacific region, weighed on demand in January and February, we saw meaningful improvement in March and April. We expect this positive momentum to continue as vaccines are more widely distributed and our customers feel safe traveling again.”</p>\n<p>So far in 2021, HLT stock is up 9%. Forward P/E and P/S ratios are47.85and10.54respectively. Many investors see the shares as a bet on the post-pandemic recovery. As for many companies, the pandemic meant a disruption of business.</p>\n<p>Stryker releasedQ1 2021 figuresin recent weeks. The company’s top line increased 10.2% YoY to $4 billion. Adjusted diluted EPS was $1.93, a 4.9% YoY increase. Quarter-end cash and equivalents stood at $2.2 billion.</p>\n<p>Management cited, “As we recover from the pandemic, we continue to expect 2021 organic net sales growth to be in the range of 8% to 10% from 2019, as this is a more normal baseline given the variability throughout 2020, and now expect adjusted net earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $9.05 to $9.30.”</p>\n<p>YTD, Stryker stock has returned about 4% and hit a record high in late April. The current price supports a dividend yield of 0.99%. As life gets back to normal in the coming months, the company should see higher procedure volumes, translating into stronger revenue.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, our country is aging. Thus, its products are likely to be used by more individuals. However, the shares are richly valued. Other titles include<i>NBA 2K</i>,<i>Civilization</i>,<i>Borderlands</i>,<i>Bioshock</i>, and<i>Xcom</i>. The video gaming industry has been one of the clear winners during the ‘stay-at-home’ days of the pandemic. Management plans to release new names in the coming quarters.</p>\n<p>In February, Take-Two Interactivereported strong Q3 results. GAAP net revenue was $860.9 million, as compared to $930.1 million in the prior year quarter. GAAP net income increased 11% to $182.2 million, or $1.57 per diluted share, compared to $163.6 million, or $1.43 per diluted share, a year ago. As of Dec. 31, 2020, the company had cash and short-term investments of $2.42 billion.</p>\n<p>CEO Strauss Zelnick said:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “Due to an incredibly strong holiday season, coupled with our ability to provide consistently the highest quality entertainment experiences, especially as many individuals continue to shelter at home, Take-Two delivered operating results that significantly exceeded our expectations.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>YTD, shares are down around 18%. TTWO stock has given up some of its recent gains after hitting an all-time high in early February. Forward P/E and P/S ratios are 28.33 and 5.95, respectively.</p>\n<p>The recent pullback offers a good opportunity for long-term investors. Bear in mind the company will report Q4 results on May 18. Verizon announcedQ1 figures for 2021at the end of April. Revenue rose by 4% YoY to $32.867 billion. Bottom line growth was much more impressive, with 25.4% YoY increase. Net earnings realized was $5.378 billion. Diluted EPS came at $1.27. A year ago, it had been $1.00. During the quarter, cash flow from operations was $9.7 billion.</p>\n<p>CFO Matt Ellis cited:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “We delivered strong operational and financial performance, giving us positive momentum as we end the first quarter. High quality, sustainable wireless service revenue growth, a recovery in wireless equipment revenues, strong Fios momentum and excellent Verizon Media trends led the way.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>In December, the shares hit a 52-week high of $61.95. Now, the stock is just shy of $60. The current price supports a dividend yield of 4.2%. VZ stock’sforward P/Eand P/S ratios are 11.67 and 0.47, respectively. The fund -- a FTSE 100 constituent with a market cap of more than GBP15 billion ($21 billion) -- has enjoyed remarkable gains over its history, marked by big, early bets on technology companies including online retailer Amazon <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a>, Chinese internet giant Tencent , and electric-car maker Tesla <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">$(TSLA)$</a>, which the fund bought into in 2014.</p><p>Shares in Scottish Mortgage have fallen 9% so far in 2021, but the fund remains up near 60% in the past year.</p><p>In a letter to shareholders, Anderson called the world of conventional asset management \"irretrievably broken,\" and took aim at \"value investing,\" the strategy famously espoused by investors like Ben Graham and Warren Buffett.</p><p>\"The only rhyme is that in the long run the value of stocks is the long-run free cash flows they generate but we have but the barest and most nebulous clues as to what these cash flows will turn out to be,\" Anderson said. \"But woe betide those who think that a near-term price to earnings ratio defines value in an era of deep change.\"</p><p>Since the emergence of digital technologies, \"sustained growth at extreme pace and with increasing returns to scale\" has become more evident, Anderson said. Apple’s own payment system takes a 30% cut from large developers.</p>\n<p>Data from the app tracker SensorTower shows that in calendar 2020, Apple had overall revenue from the App Store of $72.3 billion, generating an estimated $21.7 billion in fees, or about 7% of Apple’s overall revenues. That includes $21 billion in spending in the U.S., generating about $6.3 billion in fees, or about 2% of annualized revenues.</p>\n<p>SensorTower estimates that mobile-game spending in the App Store in calendar 2020 was $47.6 billion, generating $14.3 billion in fees, or a little under 5% of Apple’s total revenues.</p>\n<p>Gene Munster, managing director of the venture firm Loup Capital and a former sell-side analyst with a long history of tracking Apple, estimated that the App Store accounts for about 14% of the company’s profits. But he sees limited risk from Friday’s ruling.</p>\n<p>Munster thinks most app developers will stay inside of the Apple system. He sees “at most” a 2% headwind to overall revenue, and a potential 4% hit to profits.</p>\n<p>“After the first year of these changes, app store growth rates will return to normal,” he said. “Bottom line, it’s at most a one-year headwind and does not change the big picture of where Apple is going over the next 5 years.”</p>\n<p>Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani said in a research note that the ruling is a setback for Apple, but that the eventual impact is likely to be manageable, given Apple has alternative ways to generate revenue from the store, including its growing in-store ad business. And he noted that Apple actually got a win on a bigger issue in the case: The judge rejected Epic’s assertion that the App Store is an illegal monopoly. Daryanani estimated the risk to Apple’s per-share earnings at 2% to 4%.</p>\n<p>Wedbush analyst Dan Ives told&nbsp;<i>Barron’s</i>&nbsp;he thinks the worst-case scenario is a 3% to 4% hit to revenues, describing the risk as a “rounding error.” While Ives said the Street had expected an across-the-board win for Apple, the mixed decision removes an overhang on the stock and that investors are likely relieved to put the issue to rest.</p>\n<p>The ruling is more a positive for companies like&nbsp;Spotify Technology&nbsp;and&nbsp;Match Group&nbsp;than it is a negative for Apple, he said. Apple’s own payment system takes a 30% cut from large developers.\nData from the app tracker SensorTower shows that in calendar 2020, Apple had overall revenue from the App Store of $72.3 billion, generating an estimated $21.7 billion in fees, or about 7% of Apple’s overall revenues. That includes $21 billion in spending in the U.S., generating about $6.3 billion in fees, or about 2% of annualized revenues.\nSensorTower estimates that mobile-game spending in the App Store in calendar 2020 was $47.6 billion, generating $14.3 billion in fees, or a little under 5% of Apple’s total revenues.\nGene Munster, managing director of the venture firm Loup Capital and a former sell-side analyst with a long history of tracking Apple, estimated that the App Store accounts for about 14% of the company’s profits. Prices rose even more when viewed in terms of euros, yen, won, or other currencies.</p><p>Not quite as widely observed is that prices of many commodities fell somewhat over the summer. The price of oil decreased by about 30 percent between early June and mid-August. The politically sensitive American price of gasoline also has fallen 20 percent since June, from $5/gallon to $4 in mid-August. The overall CRB index has fallen 12 percent as of August 17.</p><p>Is this dip in commodity prices just temporary? Or is it a sign that they have peaked and can be expected to fall further in the future?</p><h3>1. Why are prices of different commodities so correlated?</h3><p>Mostly, the prices of different commodities are highly correlated. In many cases, this is due to direct microeconomic linkages. When the price of oil rises, the costs to wheat producers rise, because harvesting equipment runs on diesel while fertilizer is made from natural gas, which puts upward pressure on grain prices. But the correlation across widely disparate energy, mineral and agricultural commodities begs for a macroeconomic explanation.</p><p>There are two macroeconomic reasons to think that commodity prices in general will fall further. One of them is self-evident, the other less so.</p><p>Different stories apply to different commodities, of course, due to microeconomic particulars. The price of natural gas in Europe is bound to rise, as the continent learns to manage winter without Russian gas. But the story is likely to be different elsewhere.</p><h3>2. Global growth</h3><p>The most obvious macroeconomic factor is the overall level of economic activity. GDP is an important determinant of the demand for commodities and therefore their real price. Less obviously, the real interest rate is another determinant. As of now, the outlook for world growth (slowing) and the outlook for interest rates (upward) both suggest a downward path for commodity prices.</p><p>Strong global growth, especially in China, can explain the major upswings of commodity prices in 2004-07, 2010-11, and 2021. Conversely, abrupt recessions can explain the plunge in commodity prices from June 2008 to February 2009 (during the Great Recession), and again from January to April 2020 (in the pandemic recession). This leaves unexplained, for the moment, the spike in commodity prices in the first half of 2008 and the decline in 2014-15.</p><p>Global growth is currently slowing, for well-known reasons. China&#39;s growth rate has faltered dramatically (particularly in the commodity-intensive manufacturing sector). It actually turned negative in the second quarter, as Shanghai and some other cities endured shutdowns in support of a futile zero-Covid policy. Europe is hard-hit by the side effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Even US growth is slower in 2022 than it was last year, with many proclaiming that a recession has begun. (Personally, however, I am still willing to bet that no US recession started in the first part of the year and that either first quarter or second quarter GDP will be revised upward by end-September.)</p><p>Overall, according to the IMF&#39;s most recent World Economic Outlook update, global growth is projected to slow substantially, from 6.1 % in 2021, to 3.2 % in 2022 and 2.9 % in 2023. Slowing growth means lower demand for commodities, and hence lower prices.</p><h3>3. Real interest rates</h3><p>In addition, as the Fed and other central banks tighten monetary policy, real interest rates are expected to rise. This is likely to lower commodity prices, and not just because high real interest rates make a recession more likely. Interest rates have an effect independently of GDP, both in theory and statistically.</p><p>The theory of the relationship between interest rates and commodity prices is long-established. I like the &#34;overshooting&#34; formulation of the theory. The simplest intuition behind the relationship is that the interest rate is a &#34;cost of carrying&#34; inventories. A rise in the interest rate reduces firms&#39; demand for holding inventories and therefore reduces the commodity price.</p><p>Three other mechanisms operate, in addition to inventories. First, for an exhaustible resource, an increase in the interest rate increases the incentive to extract today, rather than leaving deposits in the ground for tomorrow. Second, for commodities that have been &#34;financialized,&#34; an increase in the interest rate encourages institutional investors to shift out of the commodities asset class and into treasury bills. The iPhone maker’s privacy changes make it harder for apps to track users and restrict advertisers from accessing valuable data for targeting ads.</p>\n<p>The company also announced on Wednesday that it would require anyone working at its U.S. offices to be vaccinated against COVID-19, joining Alphabet Inc and Netflix.</p>\n<p>Monthly active users came in at 2.90 billion, up 7% from the same period last year but missing analyst expectations of 2.92 billion and marking the slowest growth rate in at least three years, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>“The user growth slowdown is notable and highlights the engagement challenges as the world opens up. But importantly, Facebook is the most exposed to Apple’s privacy changes, and it looks like it is starting to have an impact to the outlook beginning in 3Q,” said Ygal Arounian, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.</p>\n<p>Brian Wieser, GroupM’s global president of business intelligence, said all social media companies would see slower growth in the second half of the year and that it would take more concrete warnings about activity in June and July for anyone to anticipate a “meaningful deceleration.”</p>\n<p>Facebook’s total revenue, which primarily consists of ad sales, rose about 56% to $29.08 billion in the second quarter from $18.69 billion a year earlier, beating analysts’ estimates, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Its revenue from advertising rose 56% to $28.58 billion in the second quarter ended June 30, Facebook said. It pointed to a 47% increase in price per ad.</p>\n<p>“In the third and fourth quarters of 2021, we expect year-over-year total revenue growth rates to decelerate significantly on a sequential basis as we lap periods of increasingly strong growth,” Chief Financial Officer Dave Wehner said in the earnings release.</p>\n<p>Net income in the second quarter more than doubled to $10.4 billion, or $3.61 per share. Analysts had expected a profit of $3.03 per share.</p>\n<p>The world’s largest social network has been ramping up its ecommerce efforts, which are expected to bring additional revenue to the company and make its ad inventory more valuable. The push will be key to how Facebook, which hosts more than 1 million online “Shops” on its main app and Instagram, can grow its ad business amid the impact of Apple’s changes.</p>\n<p>It is also on the offensive to attract top social media personalities and their fans, competing with Alphabet’s YouTube and short-video app TikTok, which recently hit 3 billion global downloads. Facebook said this month it would invest more than $1 billion to support content creators through the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>On a conference call with analysts, CEO Mark Zuckerberg also focused on another ambition for the company: the “metaverse.”</p>\n<p>Zuckerberg this week announced that Facebook, which has invested heavily in virtual reality and augmented reality, was setting up a team to work on building a shared digital world, which he is betting will be the successor to the mobile internet. Microsoft also dropped the buzzy Silicon Valley term on its earnings call this week, talking about its own plans for the converging digital and physical worlds.</p>\n<p>“Facebook has its eye on a sci-fi prize,” said Sophie Lund-Yates, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. “This is little more than an ambition for Facebook at the moment...if the idea comes to fruition, it could be a valuable income source.”</p>\n<p>The company also continues to face pressure from global lawmakers and regulators, including from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission which has until Aug. 19 to refile its antitrust complaint against the company and from a group of states who said on Wednesday they would appeal the judge’s dismissal of their lawsuit. The iPhone maker’s privacy changes make it harder for apps to track users and restrict advertisers from accessing valuable data for targeting ads.\nThe company also announced on Wednesday that it would require anyone working at its U.S. offices to be vaccinated against COVID-19, joining Alphabet Inc and Netflix.\nMonthly active users came in at 2.90 billion, up 7% from the same period last year but missing analyst expectations of 2.92 billion and marking the slowest growth rate in at least three years, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.\n“The user growth slowdown is notable and highlights the engagement challenges as the world opens up. But importantly, Facebook is the most exposed to Apple’s privacy changes, and it looks like it is starting to have an impact to the outlook beginning in 3Q,” said Ygal Arounian, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.\nBrian Wieser, GroupM’s global president of business intelligence, said all social media companies would see slower growth in the second half of the year and that it would take more concrete warnings about activity in June and July for anyone to anticipate a “meaningful deceleration.”\nFacebook’s total revenue, which primarily consists of ad sales, rose about 56% to $29.08 billion in the second quarter from $18.69 billion a year earlier, beating analysts’ estimates, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.\nIts revenue from advertising rose 56% to $28.58 billion in the second quarter ended June 30, Facebook said.
