The broadside re-ignited investor fears about state intervention in China after Beijing had already targeted the property, education and technology sectors to curb cost pressures and reassert the primacy of socialism after years of runaway market growth. \"They don’t believe anything is off limit and will react, sometimes overreact, to anything on state media that fits the tech crackdown narrative,” Ether Yin, partner at Trivium, a Beijing-based consultancy.
\n
Not surprisingly, Chinese gaming stocks listed in the U.S. slump in premarket trading; among the biggest gaming-related stocks falling this morning, NetEase sinks 8.8%, Bilibili falls 6.67%, Huya declines 4.79% and DouYu International slides 5.12% as of 8:11am in New York, Other large-cap Chinese stocks are also lower in U.S. premarket trading: Alibaba -0.94%, Pinduoduo -1.2%, Baidu -0.37%, Didi -1.25%.
\n

\n
Stocks making the biggest moves in the premarket: Under Armour, Translate Bio, Clorox and more
\n
1) Under Armour(UAA) – Under Armour shares jumped 4.5% in the premarket, after the athletic apparel maker beat estimates on the top and bottom lines and the company raised its full-year forecast. Under Armour reported quarterly earnings of 24 cents per share, compared to a consensus estimate of 6 cents a share.
\n
2) Translate Bio(TBIO) – French drugmakerSanofi(SNY) agreed to buy the U.S.-based biotech company for $3.2 billion, or $38 per share in cash. Translate Bio specializes in mRNA technology, the type that was used to produce thePfizerandModernaCovid-19 vaccines. Translate Bio shares soared 29.6% in premarket trading.
\n
3) Clorox(CLX) – Clorox tumbled 8.6% in premarket action after the household products maker missed top and bottom line estimates for its latest quarter. Clorox’s sales fell from a year ago, when consumers stocked up on its products amid the surging pandemic.
\n
4) Eli Lilly(LLY) – The drugmaker’s shares lost 1.7% in premarket trading, after falling 2 cents a share shy of estimates, with quarterly earnings of $1.87 per share. Revenue beat forecasts, but Lilly’s overall results were impacted by weaker sales of Covid-19 therapies as more Americans got vaccinated.
\n
5) Marriott(MAR) – The hotel operator’s stock gained 1.8% in premarket trading after it reported quarterly earnings of 79 cents per share, compared to a 45 cents a share consensus estimate. Revenue more than doubled from a year ago thanks to a rebound in travel demand, though it did fall slightly short of Wall Street forecasts.
\n
6) Take-Two Interactive(TTWO) – Take-Two lost 4.3% premarket trading after issuing a weaker-than-expected outlook and announcing delays in new releases for some of its games. The video game producer beat estimates by 12 cents a share, with quarterly profit of $1.01 per share. Take-Two’s revenue also topped Wall Street forecasts.
\n
7) BP(BP) – BP surged 6.3% in premarket trading after it reported better-than-expected quarterly profit and revenue, thanks to higher oil and gas prices. The energy producer also announced a 4% dividend hike and a boost to its share buyback program.
\n
8) Stellantis(STLA) – Stellantis raised its full-year profit margin outlook after the automaker reported strong first-half financial results, boosted by record margins in North America. The upbeat results came despite the impact of the global chip shortage which cut production by 700,000 vehicles. The stock rallied 5.3% in the premarket.
\n
9) Micron Technology(MU) – Micron instituted its first-ever dividend, with the chip maker planning to pay 10 cents per share in cash payable on October 18. Micron also said it had updated its share buyback policy to buy more when prices are low and fewer when prices are high. Micron shares gained 1.9% in the premarket.
\n
10) Simon Property Group(SPG) – Simon Property shares rose 2.8% in premarket trading after it said sales at its shopping centers returned to pre-pandemic levels in June. The largest U.S. mall owner is hoping the improved results encourage retailers to sign new leases and help it fill space vacated during the pandemic.
\n
11) SolarEdge Technologies(SEDG) – SolarEdge reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue for its latest quarter, with the solar energy company also providing an upbeat current-quarter forecast. SolarEdge surged 11.4% in the premarket.
\n
12) Reynolds Consumer Products(REYN) – Reynolds beat estimates by a penny a share, with quarterly earnings of 39 cents per share. Revenue fell short of Street forecasts, however. The maker of products like Hefty garbage bags and Reynolds Wrap said it was pleased with the results in the face of higher input costs supply chain issues. Reynolds lost 3.6% in premarket action.
\n
In rates, treasuries drifted lower over early European session, tracking losses in bunds and gilts. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield edged around 2bps higher after falling as low as 1.15%; the move steepened 2s10s, 5s30s by 1bp each. Higher S&P futures also added pressure on rising yields, following gains across European stocks amid positive earnings results. Germany’s 10-year yield fell to its lowest since early February at -0.486%. It was last up less than a basis point at -0.47%. Its 30-year yield, which turned negative and sent the whole German yield curve into negative territory on Monday, was hovering around 0%.
\n
“There is some definite downside bias in the dollar now,” said Vasileios Gkionakis, Global Head of FX Strategy at fund manager Lombard Odier in Switzerland. “You are starting to a see a rotation of growth away from the U.S.”
\n
According to strategists the months-long advance in Treasuries which saw 10Y real yields drop to fresh record lows on Monday, points to worries that a weaker period lies ahead for the economic reopening from the health crisis, though second-quarter corporate earnings have been robust for the most part. Traders are awaiting key U.S. jobs data this week to gauge the recovery and monitoring the impact of price pressures sparked by pandemic-related disruption and bottlenecks.
\n
“I don’t think the market is concerned about delta as much as it’s concerned about how it impacts inflation,” Shana Sissel, Spotlight Asset Group chief investment officer, said on Bloomberg Television, referring to the coronavirus variant. “The longer we have delta spread globally, the longer the supply chain disruptions will continue.”
\n
Meanwhile, on the policy front, the tapering debate continues. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said he could back a tapering announcement by September, if the next two monthly U.S. employment reports show continued gains.
\n
In FX, the Norwegian krone and New Zealand’s dollar led an advance against the greenback; the Canadian dollar retreated, underperforming its peers. The euro eked out an advance to a session high of 1.1885 per dollar; the pound climbed back above $1.39 and gilts halted a three-day gain as caution reigns ahead of Bank of England’s meeting on Thursday. The Australian dollar jumped after the nation’s central bank said it will stick to its tapering plan, arguing that the economy will rebound from the latest virus outbreak.Traders rushed to close short positions on the Aussie after the Reserve Bank of Australia decision on Tuesday, according to Asia-based FX traders. Existing AUD/NZD flows after the RBA decision propelled New Zealand’s dollar to a new session high.
\n
Australia’s currency advanced after its central bank kept a plan to taper bond purchases despite a protracted lockdown in Sydney.
\n
In commodities, crude oil reversed earlier losses as sentiment improved in broader markets even though the spread of the delta coronavirus variant, including in the key market of China, continues to pose a risk to demand. Brent crude was up 33 cents in London at $73.28 per barrel. U.S. crude inched up to $71.56 a barrel while gold and industrial metal copper were both slightly lower at $1,810.45 per ounce and 9,594.50 a tonne respectively.
\n
Looking at the day ahead, this morning the only data due out is the June PPI print for the Euro area. This afternoon in the US June factory orders and final June revisions for durable and capital goods orders are expected as well as July vehicle sales data. Away from that the Fed’s Bowman is due to speak this evening while it’s another busy day for earnings with the likes of BP, ConocoPhillips, BMW and Amgen amongst those reporting.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; That’s why so many mutual funds lag behind their indices.
\n
So when you find a fund with a great record, it pays to investigate what the fund managers are doing — to learn some lessons.
\n
The American Century Focused Dynamic Growth FundACFSXfits the bill. The $2.8 billion fund beats its Russell 1000 Growth Index by over 6 percentage points annualized over the past three and five years, according toMorningstar. It outperforms its large-growth category by 8.6 percentage points annualized over five years. It has a reasonable 0.65% expense ratio.
\n
The fund is co-managed by Prabha Ram, who I recently caught up with. Raised in India, Ram came to the U.S. as a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science. She went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Ram and three other portfolio managers have led this fund since 2016.
\n
Here are the five key takeaways, with examples of specific stocks.
\n
1. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets
\n
Even though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.
\n
Bill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.
\n
Bill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.
\n
“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.
\n
Founder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.
\n
2. Seek out innovators
\n
Ram’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.
\n
Back in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.
\n
Boston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.
\n
“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”
\n
This penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.
\n
A key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.
\n
They’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.
\n
But don’t count out this innovator yet.
\n
“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with Beam Suntory that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”
\n
3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche
\n
For years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.
\n
This is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.
\n
4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth
\n
One way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.
\n
Alnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.
\n
“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”
\n
5. Hold stocks for the long term
\n
All of the names above are large positions in Ram’s fund, which tells me that Ram and her team think they have considerably more upside. If you buy any of them, though, remember you have to do so with a multi-year time horizon. That’s what Ram’s fund does. It has a low annual portfolio turnover of 27%. It’s important to have a long-term view, because it is so tough to call short-term moves in the stock market or in stocks, and you need to give companies time to develop.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
You can beat stock market indexes — this fund manager has, and this is how she and her team did it
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nYou can beat stock market indexes — this fund manager has, and this is how she and her team did it\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-31 15:22 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Five key lessons on outperformance from Prabha Ram at the American Century Focused Dynamic Growth Fund.\n\nInvesting is a tough game. That’s why so many mutual funds lag behind their indices.
Its global user count grew 5% in July compared with the year-ago period.\nPinterest CEO Ben Silbermann said stay-at-home orders in the past year helped drive engagement and usage of its platform. But now that economies around the world have begun to reopen, some of the behavior common a year ago during the height of the pandemic have changed—redecorating, home education, and cooking at home, for example—and aren’t as common, he said.\n“For the past year, we’ve highlighted how people came to Pinterest for inspiration to reinvent their lives during such a difficult time,” he said. “Now, as the world opens up, we’re seeing the similar effect in the opposite direction.”\nPinterest said it would not issue third-quarter MAU growth guidance because restrictions due to the spread of Covid-19 continue to fluctuate.\nDespite its sequentially declining user count, Pinterest topped analyst expectations for adjusted per-share profit and revenue.\nThe social media platform reported second-quarter net income of $69.4 million, which amounts to 10 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $100.8 million, or a loss of17 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Adjusted for stock-based compensation, among other things, earnings were 25 cents a share. Revenue more than doubled to $613.2 million.\nAnalysts had expected adjusted second-quarter earnings of 13 cents a share on revenue of $562.2 million.\nPinterest said that it expects third-quarter revenue to grow in the 40% range compared with a year ago, which is roughly in line with analyst estimates. For the third quarter, Wall Street expects non-GAAP earnings of 19 cents a share on revenue of $635.4 million.\nDigital advertising companies have reported mixed results for the June quarter earnings season.Alphabet,Snap, and Twitter, handily beat expectations, sending shares flying.Facebook didn’t please investors when it reported earnings late Wednesday.\nPinterest stock had retreated 6% in the regular session Thursday to close at $72.04.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":885,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3580016166379606","authorId":"3580016166379606","name":"JLUljs","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/16b88b4c5c83f1a751fffbd8db4211e2","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3580016166379606","authorIdStr":"3580016166379606"},"content":"during this period, many stocks are down even with good earnings report. so Pinterest is still doing fine, it's just the overall market.","text":"during this period, many stocks are down even with good earnings report. so Pinterest is still doing fine, it's just the overall market.","html":"during this period, many stocks are down even with good earnings report. so Pinterest is still doing fine, it's just the overall market."}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":806539938,"gmtCreate":1627664793024,"gmtModify":1703494445379,"author":{"id":"3580391816796512","authorId":"3580391816796512","name":"Seanie97","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580391816796512","authorIdStr":"3580391816796512"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great","listText":"Great","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/806539938","repostId":"1109908934","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":488,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":807902609,"gmtCreate":1627993916601,"gmtModify":1703499256945,"author":{"id":"3580391816796512","authorId":"3580391816796512","name":"Seanie97","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580391816796512","authorIdStr":"3580391816796512"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Up up up","listText":"Up up up","text":"Up up up","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/807902609","repostId":"1126095878","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1126095878","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1627991741,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1126095878?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-03 19:55","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Toplines Before US Market Open on Tuesday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1126095878","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Futures up: Dow 0.46%, S&P 0.37%, Nasdaq 0.16%.\nChinese gaming stocks listed in the U.S. slump in pr","content":"
\n
Futures up: Dow 0.46%, S&P 0.37%, Nasdaq 0.16%.
\n
Chinese gaming stocks listed in the U.S. slump in premarket trading.
\n
Under Armour, Translate Bio, Clorox and more made the biggest moves in the premarket.
\n
Crude oil reversed earlier losses as sentiment improved in broader markets.
\n
\n
(August 3) U.S. stock index futures rose on Tuesday, as an upbeat corporate earnings season and a pickup in global deals activity lifted demand for risky equities, although gains were capped by concerns around a surge in the Delta variant of the coronavirus.
\n
At 08:02 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were up 159 points, or 0.46%, S&P 500 E-minis were up 16 points, or 0.37% and Nasdaq 100 E-minis rose 24.5 points, or 0.16%.
\n
*Source From Tiger Trade, EST 08:02
\n
The big story overnight was China's latest crackdown in which the XInhua-affiliated Economic Information Daily cited Tencent's \"Honor of Kings\" in an article in which it said minors were addicted to online games and called for more curbs on the industry.
