For instance, <b>Cloudflare</b> (NYSE:NET) and <b>Shopify</b> (NYSE:SHOP) have each fallen over 20% from their 52-week highs, but both look like good long-term investments. Here's why you should consider buying these two growth stocks on the dip.</p>\n<h2>1. Cloudflare: Cloud computing</h2>\n<p>Cloudflare is a cloud services provider that makes the internet faster, more reliable, and more secure. Its global network spans 200 cities, and supports nearly 17%&nbsp;of the internet as of April 2021, according to W3Techs. Those are incredible statistics, but they mean more in context. So let's look at a recent product launch.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5e55778fa4732da24b1a14ed4fcaafa2\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"478\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>Traditionally, corporations have taken a castle-and-moat approach&nbsp;to networks: All resources were stored on-site, all employees worked in the office, and all incoming and outgoing connections were filtered through central hardware (e.g. firewall boxes, internet gateways). But this model is no longer efficient or effective, since more employees are working remotely and more enterprises rely on cloud computing.</p>\n<p>In 2020, Cloudflare launched Cloudflare for Teams to solve this problem. This product is built around Cloudflare Access and Cloudflare Gateway, enabling employees to securely access corporate resources and the open internet whether they are in the office or working remotely.</p>\n<p>Moreover, Cloudflare's global network offers performance at a scale that would be impossible for most enterprises to achieve on their own. It also eliminates the need for costly on-site hardware. Put another way, Cloudflare for Teams is faster and cheaper than legacy network security solutions.</p>\n<p>Beyond this example, Cloudflare offers a range of other products -- everything from serverless computing to streaming video platforms -- all of which are designed to enhance performance and security.</p>\n<p>In total, management believes the company's market opportunity will grow at 9% per year, rising from $72 billion in 2020 to $100 billion by 2024. The company faces competition from legacy providers like <b>Akamai</b>&nbsp;and public cloud titans like <b>Amazon</b> Web Services. However, Cloudflare is currently growing more quickly than both. That's why this growth stock is a buy for long-term investors.</p>\n<h2>2. Shopify: E-commerce</h2>\n<p>Creating an e-commerce website is complicated, especially if you're not a software developer. And managing a business is even more complicated since you need a way to process payments, manage inventory, fulfill and ship orders, and run ad campaigns.</p>\n<p>Shopify removes all of this complexity, simplifying commerce. Using its&nbsp;software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, anyone can easily build an online storefront and manage a business across physical and digital locations.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ff4a35f99c16648b52d7b3f448eb34e1\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Shopify.</span></p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, Shopify's business has grown at an incredible pace as e-commerce has gained traction around the world. In 2016 the company had 377,500&nbsp;customers, but that figure double by 2018&nbsp;and doubled again by 2020, reaching 1.7 million.</p>\n<p>At the same time, Shopify has seen strong adoption of its payment processing and shipping services. In 2016 Shopify Payments handled 39% of gross merchandise volume&nbsp;(GMV), but that figure hit 45% in 2020. Subscription sales growth accelerated to 71% and merchant solutions sales growth accelerated to 137%. In total, Q1 revenue came in at $989 million -- more than double its full-year revenue in 2016.</p>\n<p>This supercharged financial performance can't last forever, but even as growth slows, I believe Shopify will be an important player in the e-commerce industry for decades to come. In 2016 Shopify Payments handled 39% of gross merchandise volume (GMV), but that figure hit 45% in 2020. And the company is selling its Las Vegas properties for $6.25 billion, so in the future, it will be 100% reliant on Asia when that deal is closed.</p><p>Relying on Asia can be a double-edged sword for casino operators. The market is extremely big and very profitable when operations are going well, but operators are also at the whim of government regulations and restrictions. Macao has gone through ups and downs depending on how open China's visas are to the region. Singapore pushed through a higher tax rate even after Las Vegas Sands committed to spending $3.3 billion to expand Marina Bay Sands.</p><p>If Macao and Singapore gambling returns to 2019 levels sometime late this year or early next year, it would be great for gambling operations, but there's no guarantee that will happen, and we could see a very slow recovery in some countries where vaccine roll-outs aren't going as fast as they are in the U.S.</p><h2>Missing out on internet gambling</h2><p>One of the bigger mistakes late CEO Sheldon Adelson made was fighting online gambling in the U.S. Las Vegas Sands didn't just fail to invest in the booming business; it actively fought its legalization. That puts the company well behind competitors.</p><p>In 2020, online gambling reached $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion in gross gambling revenue in the U.S, according to H2 Gambling Capital, making up 20% of the market. Revenue is expected to grow rapidly as sports betting and iGaming are expanded across the U.S. with some expecting revenue to more than double. Las Vegas Sands may miss the boat entirely.</p><h2>Is there any value in Las Vegas Sands?</h2><p>At today's stock price, Las Vegas Sands' enterprise value (EV) is $59.9 billion, not much lower than it was at the end of 2019 despite the pandemic.</p><p>Even if we disregard the sale of Las Vegas operations, it'll be very difficult for Las Vegas Sands to return to the 11.3 EV/EBITDA multiple by the end of 2021. If Asian gamblers don't return in droves, the company may not reach 2019 EBITDA levels for years.</p><p>As we've seen, real growth in the gambling industry is in online gambling. What I'm most worried about is that Las Vegas Sands has no presence in that business. The company is working aggressively to grow its sales and has recently entered into several key partnerships that should help it achieve this goal. With enhanced growth prospects and a lower price, the stock's valuation has improved. Let's see if it has changed enough to make the stock a buy right now.</p><h3>Improved valuation</h3><p>In January, Plug Power stock was trading at a price-to-sales ratio of around 104. The ratio has now fallen to 51. Based on 2021 estimated sales, the ratio stands at around 37. Surely it has improved a lot from its January levels.</p><p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F621481%2Fhydrogen-fuel-cells-next-to-h2-written-with-green-leaves.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"498\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><p>Going by Plug Power's estimates of $1.7 billion sales in 2024, the price-to-sales ratio falls to a saner level of around 10. For a fast-growing company, that kind of ratio isn't too unusual. So <i>if</i> the company can grow its sales as it is guiding, its valuation can make some sense. It is noteworthy that the price-to-sales-ratio calculation for 2024 sales doesn't take into account potential dilution. In the last year, Plug Power's outstanding shares have increased 82%.</p><h3>Focus on growth</h3><p>Plug Power has been taking aggressive steps to grow its top line. In February the company announced its plan to build a green hydrogen production facility in New York with a production capacity of 45 metric tons per day. Plug Power also recently signed a previously announced deal whereby South Korea's SK Group will invest $1.6 billion in Plug Power in exchange for a 9.6% stake in the company. The two companies plan to jointly establish a huge fuel cell and electrolyzer production facility in South Korea. The South Korean government has set ambitious goals for promoting hydrogen use in the country, which should benefit Plug Power.</p><p>The company has also entered into partnership with automaker <b>Renault</b>. A planned joint venture with Renault will target a 30% share of the fuel-cell-powered light commercial vehicle market in Europe. That would be huge as 30% of the light vehicle market is expected to be around 500,000 vehicles by 2030.&nbsp;Plug Power has also announced a partnership with ACCONIA, a leading developer of sustainable infrastructure solutions. With an expected investment of over 2 billion euros, the joint venture will aim to capture 20% share of Spain and Portugal's green hydrogen market by 2030.</p><p>So Plug Power's 2024 sales guidance of $1.7 billion and sales growth beyond that look achievable. However, sales are just <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> part of the story. Let's turn our attention to other key metrics as well as risks.</p><h3>Can Plug Power become profitable?</h3><p>With its sales target looking more realistic, the next key concern is attaining profitability. After all, the company has been growing its revenue for years. The company hopes to achieve gross margins of more than 20% by 2022 and improve beyond that. But achieving bottom-line profits looks much more difficult.</p><p>Plug Power currently derives roughly 94% of its revenue from the material handling business, which primarily supplies fuel cells for forklifts. Despite boasting a list of prominent customers, the company hasn't been profitable in this segment so far. By 2024, the company hopes to generate $750 million from the material handling segment, with the remaining nearly $1 billion coming from stationary base load power generation and fuel cell powered vehicles.</p><p>Considering that Plug Power hasn't been profitable in a segment it has been operating in for years, it might be a big challenge for it to turn the bottom line green in a new segment. Moreover, if fuel-cell-powered vehicles' growth remains subdued, it can potentially limit Plug Power's growth as well as its margins.</p><p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F621481%2Fhand-turns-a-dice-and-changes-the-expression-bev-battery-electric-vehicle-to-fcev-fuel-cell-electric-vehicle.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"320\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><p>Plug Power hopes to benefit significantly from governmental incentives such as LCFS (low carbon fuel standard) credits in California and similar potential credits for green hydrogen under President Biden's climate plan. Further, Plug Power is looking to get a&nbsp;$520 million&nbsp;loan from the U.S. Department of Energy under its loan guarantee program. However, as the adoption of fuel cell technology remains slow, these incentives too would likely be slower and lower than the company would like them to be.</p><p>It's important here to understand why Plug Power isn't profitable after 20 years of operation. It's not that the company is making huge capital investments that will generate income for it at some point. If that were the case, the stock's prospects would be better. It's simply that Plug Power's fuel cells cost more than customers are willing to pay. Other energy and storage options are cheaper and thus preferable. So Plug Power is growing its top line by selling products at a price that customers are willing to pay. But that is not enough to cover the company's costs.</p><p>In short, even if the company is able to make some profit at scale, the margins will likely be thin. And this is the single biggest factor that suggests the stock shouldn't command the high valuation it currently has. That competition may hurt the company's margins is a concern only if the business makes economic sense, which it doesn't do right now. The company is working aggressively to grow its sales and has recently entered into several key partnerships that should help it achieve this goal. With enhanced growth prospects and a lower price, the stock's valuation has improved. Let's see if it has changed enough to make the stock a buy right now.Improved valuationIn January, Plug Power stock was trading at a price-to-sales ratio of around 104. The ratio has now fallen to 51. Based on 2021 estimated sales, the ratio stands at around 37. Surely it has improved a lot from its January levels.Image source: Getty Images.Going by Plug Power's estimates of $1.7 billion sales in 2024, the price-to-sales ratio falls to a saner level of around 10. For a fast-growing company, that kind of ratio isn't too unusual. So if the company can grow its sales as it is guiding, its valuation can make some sense. It is noteworthy that the price-to-sales-ratio calculation for 2024 sales doesn't take into account potential dilution. In the last year, Plug Power's outstanding shares have increased 82%.Focus on growthPlug Power has been taking aggressive steps to grow its top line. In February the company announced its plan to build a green hydrogen production facility in New York with a production capacity of 45 metric tons per day. Plug Power also recently signed a previously announced deal whereby South Korea's SK Group will invest $1.6 billion in Plug Power in exchange for a 9.6% stake in the company. The two companies plan to jointly establish a huge fuel cell and electrolyzer production facility in South Korea. The South Korean government has set ambitious goals for promoting hydrogen use in the country, which should benefit Plug Power.The company has also entered into partnership with automaker Renault. A planned joint venture with Renault will target a 30% share of the fuel-cell-powered light commercial vehicle market in Europe. That would be huge as 30% of the light vehicle market is expected to be around 500,000 vehicles by 2030. Plug Power has also announced a partnership with ACCONIA, a leading developer of sustainable infrastructure solutions. With an expected investment of over 2 billion euros, the joint venture will aim to capture 20% share of Spain and Portugal's green hydrogen market by 2030.So Plug Power's 2024 sales guidance of $1.7 billion and sales growth beyond that look achievable. However, sales are just one part of the story. Let's turn our attention to other key metrics as well as risks.Can Plug Power become profitable?With its sales target looking more realistic, the next key concern is attaining profitability. After all, the company has been growing its revenue for years. The company hopes to achieve gross margins of more than 20% by 2022 and improve beyond that. But achieving bottom-line profits looks much more difficult.Plug Power currently derives roughly 94% of its revenue from the material handling business, which primarily supplies fuel cells for forklifts. Despite boasting a list of prominent customers, the company hasn't been profitable in this segment so far. By 2024, the company hopes to generate $750 million from the material handling segment, with the remaining nearly $1 billion coming from stationary base load power generation and fuel cell powered vehicles.Considering that Plug Power hasn't been profitable in a segment it has been operating in for years, it might be a big challenge for it to turn the bottom line green in a new segment. Moreover, if fuel-cell-powered vehicles' growth remains subdued, it can potentially limit Plug Power's growth as well as its margins.Image source: Getty Images.Plug Power hopes to benefit significantly from governmental incentives such as LCFS (low carbon fuel standard) credits in California and similar potential credits for green hydrogen under President Biden's climate plan. Further, Plug Power is looking to get a $520 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy under its loan guarantee program. However, as the adoption of fuel cell technology remains slow, these incentives too would likely be slower and lower than the company would like them to be.It's important here to understand why Plug Power isn't profitable after 20 years of operation. It's not that the company is making huge capital investments that will generate income for it at some point. If that were the case, the stock's prospects would be better. It's simply that Plug Power's fuel cells cost more than customers are willing to pay. Other energy and storage options are cheaper and thus preferable. So Plug Power is growing its top line by selling products at a price that customers are willing to pay. But that is not enough to cover the company's costs.In short, even if the company is able to make some profit at scale, the margins will likely be thin. And this is the single biggest factor that suggests the stock shouldn't command the high valuation it currently has. That competition may hurt the company's margins is a concern only if the business makes economic sense, which it doesn't do right now. To the contrary, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> trader is seeing short opportunities in not only the Nasdaq, but it's biggest component, Apple (AAPL).</p><p>Tech stocks have been lagging the Dow and S&amp;P 500 this year, but JC Parets, founder of allstarcharts.com, explains to Yahoo Finance Live that this phenomenon stretches back to the end of the second quarter of 2020.</p><p>\"The underperformance started [on] Labor Day last year at the end of the summer, and that's when they all peaked ... Amazon has done nothing since then. It's not just tech [stocks], it's really big growth [stocks] and even small cap growth [stocks]. Growth in general peaked at the end of last summer — Apple, Amazon (AMZN), all of them on a relative basis.\"</p><p>The two biggest outperforming S&amp;P 500 sectors this year are energy and financials. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) is up 38% and the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) is up 26% year-to-date. Parets says, \"[T]he big winners have been coming out of value [stocks] ... Financials, Berkshire [Hathaway], energy ... Those have been the winners. The losers have been the growth stocks.\"</p><h2>2021 is not 2020</h2><p>Parets also notes the different market environment this year compared to last year — a phenomenon many investors may not be noticing. \"There's so much more evidence that 2021 is just not what 2020 was, right? It is a completely different type of market, and some investors are able to adjust and see the information coming in and act accordingly. And some investors just like to sit on their hands and hope that last year's market was going to continue to be this year's market. I see it every day, and they're paying a price for it,\" he says.</p><p>Parets outlines his trading style using the recent highs of certain trading instruments as a line in the sand. If the price is below the level, he's thinking bearishly. \"[If the index level is] below the February highs in small caps or the Nasdaq, under no circumstances can we be long ... Bottom line is there's no reason to be long if the Nasdaq or small caps are below those February highs.\"</p><p>Apple stock, like many of its peers, has gone largely sideways since September despite making a nominal record high in January. Parets likes a short in Apple based on its relative underperformance, and issues a warning to fund managers who may be loading up on growth stocks at the expense of risk management.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://s.yimg.com/os/creatr-uploaded-images/2021-05/7c956ff0-b29d-11eb-afd7-bb72120e4af7\" tg-width=\"1900\" tg-height=\"902\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>JC Parets breaks down an Apple short</span></p><p>\"I'm hearing that [Ark Investment Management CEO] Cathie Wood considers Apple her cash equivalent. That's pretty scary if you ask me. So, I really like the short a lot. Notice those September highs — where we got to in September was 138. We tried to get back there in January and failed. Most recently, we tried to get back there last month and failed, again. That's the level, 138. If you're below 138, under no circumstances can you own Apple ... I prefer to be short. And how low could it go? ... I could go real low. Why can't it get back toward 100?\" says Parets.</p><h2>Gold making a comeback</h2><p>Parets also highlights how defensive sectors and instruments have been perking up since the March lows. He uses a generalized trading maxim to illustrate how the trends in defensive stocks morphed from bearish to bullish.</p><p>\"First thing assets need to do before they [start going up] is to stop going down. And over the last year, what were the worst assets? Bonds, yen, gold, staples on a relative bases. All the defensive areas were the worst place to be. And that changed in the first quarter of this year. They stopped going down, and over the last couple months, they've actually been going up,\" says Parets.</p><p>When it comes to things that have started to go up, Parets is looking at playing gold. \"We've been bullish gold. That trade's been working — not just the metal, also the [gold] miners as well. Yen stopped going down, bonds stopped going down. They're not really going up, but they're not going down either. And [with consumer] staples, utilities, [and] REITs outperforming, does that remind you of an environment where stocks are doing well? Or should they be doing poorly?\" he asks.</p><p>Separately, Lee Munson, president and CIO at Portfolio Wealth Advisors, is also telling Yahoo Finance Live he likes gold as an investment because the environment for the precious metal has fundamentally changed. \"What moved gold in the past is not what is moving it right now. We have had a regime change. Generally, I see gold as something that tends to go up when the Fed's balance sheet expands. Some people think the balance sheet can't expand anymore. To the contrary, one trader is seeing short opportunities in not only the Nasdaq, but it's biggest component, Apple (AAPL).Tech stocks have been lagging the Dow and S&P 500 this year, but JC Parets, founder of allstarcharts.com, explains to Yahoo Finance Live that this phenomenon stretches back to the end of the second quarter of 2020.\"The underperformance started [on] Labor Day last year at the end of the summer, and that's when they all peaked ... Amazon has done nothing since then. It's not just tech [stocks], it's really big growth [stocks] and even small cap growth [stocks]. Growth in general peaked at the end of last summer — Apple, Amazon (AMZN), all of them on a relative basis.\"The two biggest outperforming S&P 500 sectors this year are energy and financials. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) is up 38% and the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) is up 26% year-to-date. Parets says, \"[T]he big winners have been coming out of value [stocks] ... Financials, Berkshire [Hathaway], energy ... Those have been the winners. The losers have been the growth stocks.\"2021 is not 2020Parets also notes the different market environment this year compared to last year — a phenomenon many investors may not be noticing. \"There's so much more evidence that 2021 is just not what 2020 was, right? It is a completely different type of market, and some investors are able to adjust and see the information coming in and act accordingly. And some investors just like to sit on their hands and hope that last year's market was going to continue to be this year's market. I see it every day, and they're paying a price for it,\" he says.Parets outlines his trading style using the recent highs of certain trading instruments as a line in the sand. If the price is below the level, he's thinking bearishly. \"[If the index level is] below the February highs in small caps or the Nasdaq, under no circumstances can we be long ... Bottom line is there's no reason to be long if the Nasdaq or small caps are below those February highs.\"Apple stock, like many of its peers, has gone largely sideways since September despite making a nominal record high in January. Most recently, we tried to get back there last month and failed, again. That's the level, 138. If you're below 138, under no circumstances can you own Apple ... I prefer to be short. And how low could it go? ... I could go real low. He uses a generalized trading maxim to illustrate how the trends in defensive stocks morphed from bearish to bullish.\"First thing assets need to do before they [start going up] is to stop going down. And over the last year, what were the worst assets? Bonds, yen, gold, staples on a relative bases. All the defensive areas were the worst place to be. And that changed in the first quarter of this year. That trade's been working — not just the metal, also the [gold] miners as well. Yen stopped going down, bonds stopped going down. They're not really going up, but they're not going down either. In 2016 the company had 377,500&nbsp;customers, but that figure double by 2018&nbsp;and doubled again by 2020, reaching 1.7 million.</p>\n<p>At the same time, Shopify has seen strong adoption of its payment processing and shipping services. In 2016 Shopify Payments handled 39% of gross merchandise volume&nbsp;(GMV), but that figure hit 45% in 2020. Subscription sales growth accelerated to 71% and merchant solutions sales growth accelerated to 137%. In total, Q1 revenue came in at $989 million -- more than double its full-year revenue in 2016.</p>\n<p>This supercharged financial performance can't last forever, but even as growth slows, I believe Shopify will be an important player in the e-commerce industry for decades to come.
