This includes:</p><ul><li><b>Amazon</b> (AMZN -0.26%), which declared and enacted a 20-for-1 stock split.</li><li><b>Shopify</b> (SHOP -2.26%), which announced and moved forward with a 10-for-1 stock split.</li><li><b>Tesla</b> (TSLA 3.10%), which announced a 3-for-1 split in June and gained approval from its shareholders on August 4 to conduct its split on Aug. 25, 2022.</li></ul><p>The $64,000 question is, &#34;Which stock-split stock makes for the better buy right now?&#34;</p><h2>Is Amazon the perfect stock to add to your shopping cart?</h2><p>First up is e-commerce giant Amazon, whose share price fell from a peak of $3,700 pre-split to the $140s on a post-split basis. It was the company&#39;s first stock split in more than two decades.</p><p>When most people hear the word &#34;Amazon,&#34; they immediately think of the company&#39;s leading online marketplace. This year, Amazon is expected to bring in about $0.40 of every $1 spent in online retail sales in the United States.  But this top-tier revenue segment typically generates low operating margins.</p><p>The far bigger story for Amazon is what&#39;s happening with its higher-margin initiatives, such as subscription services, advertising, and cloud services. For instance, the greater than 200 million people signed up for Prime worldwide bring in tens of billions of dollars in predictable, high-margin revenue for Amazon every year.</p><p>Amazon Web Services (AWS) should play an even more important role in growing Amazon&#39;s operating cash flow in the years that lie ahead. I say &#34;cash flow&#34; and not earnings given that Amazon loves to reinvest a significant portion of its operating cash flow into its logistics network and various growth initiatives. With AWS accounting for a third of global cloud-service spending in the first quarter, and this segment providing the bulk of Amazon&#39;s operating income, it could send Amazon&#39;s share price significantly higher.</p><h2>Should you checkout with Shopify?</h2><p>Another possibility for investors is to put their money to work in cloud-based e-commerce platform Shopify. After peaking at more than $1,700 prior to its split, shares of this beaten-down tech stock can be had for around $40 on a post-split basis.</p><p>What makes Shopify such an intriguing company from the standpoint of long-term investors is its addressable market. A presentation from 2021 estimated that Shopify&#39;s e-commerce platform has a $153 billion addressable market just from small businesses (i.e., it&#39;s bread-and-butter target). This doesn&#39;t even take into account the larger businesses that have begun utilizing Shopify&#39;s tools and data analytics. With Shopify on pace to bring in over $7 billion in revenue this year, the implication is that growth is still in the very early innings.</p><p>Innovation is another tool that should excite investors. Last year, Shopify launched Shop Pay, its very own buy now, pay later (BNPL) service designed to give merchants and their consumers more payment options. Although BNPL operators have been hammered recently by domestic and global economic weakness, it should ultimately be a positive for Shopify&#39;s vast network of merchants over the long run.</p><p>Shopify is using bolt-on acquisitions to its advantage, too. Last month, it completed the $2.1 billion cash-and-stock buyout of e-commerce fulfillment company Deliverr.  Buying Deliverr further compliments Shopify&#39;s Fulfillment Network and should give merchants more peace of mind when managing their inventory and direct-to-consumer sales.</p><h2>Can investors burn rubber with Tesla?</h2><p>The third potential stock-split stock to buy is electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla. The company&#39;s upcoming split will mark its second in two years.</p><p>The reason investors gravitate to Tesla is because of the company&#39;s competitive advantages. It&#39;s the first automaker to build itself from the ground up to mass production in more than five decades. Even with semiconductor chip shortages hurting production, and the company&#39;s Shanghai gigafactory being adversely impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns, Tesla looks to be well on its way to surpassing 1 million EV deliveries in a year for the first time.</p><p>In addition to production, Tesla has turned the corner to recurring profitability. Whereas the company had relied heavily on selling renewable energy credits (RECs) to other automakers prior to 2020, it&#39;s been generating generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) profits without the need for RECs to push it to a sizable profit. In each of the past five quarters, Tesla has delivered a GAAP profit ranging from $1.14 billion to $3.32 billion.</p><p>Tesla&#39;s success is also a reflection of investors&#39; belief in CEO Elon Musk as an innovator. As CEO, Musk has helped diversify his company&#39;s operations -- e.g., Tesla provides energy storage systems and installs solar panels via subsidiaries -- and has kept the company&#39;s user base excited about upcoming innovations, such as Tesla Bot, a robotic humanoid that could serve a variety of purposes.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a3d04332f26103c280e356ba7a8e2d51\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><h2>The better stock-split stock to buy right now is...</h2><p>Ultimately, Amazon, Shopify, and Tesla wouldn&#39;t have announced stock splits if their respective share prices hadn&#39;t significantly risen following great execution. But only one of these three stock-split stocks stands out as the clear better buy right now.</p><p>In my view, it&#39;s certainly <i>not</i> Tesla. The biggest issue with Tesla just might be Elon Musk. Aside from drawing the ire of the Securities and Exchange Commission on multiple occasions, Musk has continually overpromised and underdelivered as CEO. While the company&#39;s share price would say others, we&#39;ve seen delays to practically every major project or innovation proposed by Musk, including robotaxis and the Cybertruck, among others.</p><p>Tesla is also quite expensive. Whereas most auto stocks trade at single-digit forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios, Tesla will have investors paying about 54 times Wall Street&#39;s forecast earnings in 2023 for a company that&#39;ll likely see its competitive advantages wane over time.</p><p>Despite it being a popular buy right now, I don&#39;t believe Shopify is the answer, either. This is a retail-driven company that&#39;s susceptible to slower growth from rapidly rising interest rates and contracting U.S. gross domestic product. While there&#39;s no question Shopify has a delectably large addressable market, the company has a lot of work to do on its bottom-line to attract long-term investors.</p><p>The stock-split stock that&#39;s the absolute best buy of the three right now is Amazon.</p><p>Although its P/E ratio is an eye-popper for all the wrong reasons, the P/E ratio is a poor way to measure value with Amazon. As noted, because Amazon reinvests most of its operating cash flow back into its business, price-to-cash-flow is a far better measure of value.</p><p>Between 2010 and 2019, investors paid a year-end multiple of 23 to 37 times year-end cash flow. Based on Wall Street&#39;s 2025 forecast, which takes into account AWS growing into a larger percentage of total sales, Amazon is valued at just 10 times cash flow. If Amazon hits this estimate, it would be the cheapest shares have ever been. In addition, the recent Ukraine-Russia conflict has heightened geopolitical tensions and made the company&#39;s software even more appealing.</p><p>In my previous post on Palantir stock, I highlighted the stock as having a &#34;Fair value of $10 per share&#34; and stated at the time when the stock was trading at $7/share it was 32% undervalued. Since that post the stock price popped by ~42%, so congratulations to those who invested. However, the company has recently announced muted financials for the second quarter of 2022 and highlighted slowing revenue growth. Thus in this post I&#39;m going to breakdown the latest financials and revisit my valuation with the lower growth rates taken into account, let&#39;s dive in.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/be20bcd04086540035b52475cede4661\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"802\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>PLTR data by YCharts</span></p><p><b>Gold Standard Software</b></p><p>There is a lot of mystery around what exactly Palantir does and I personally believe many investors do not fully understand the business, as very few people have explained it simply. Therefore here is a quick overview of its main products;</p><p><b>Foundry</b></p><p>This is dubbed &#34;The Operating System for the Modern Enterprise &#39;&#39;. Enterprises (large Organizations) tend to have siloed data across multiple business units and require a system that can bring this data together in a safe, secure and intelligent way. Data is only as powerful as the ability to use it, but when siloed it cannot be used effectively for overall business intelligence. Foundry can also use this data to create &#34;Digital Twins&#34; of manufacturing and logistics setups, which is a great way to plan changes and capture data in real time.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cb8eee9f6d33c2b22ac2626af77b9e16\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"417\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Palantir Foundry (Palantir)</span></p><p><b>Gotham</b></p><p>Gotham has been dubbed &#34;The Operating System for Global Decision Making&#34;. This platform enables complex situations with multiple reacting entities to be simulated with real time data feeds to enable faster decisions. A key example, is with the US Army and tracking Battleships around the coast. The Army generals can see the action in real time and setup automated scouting drones to fly to areas for surveillance, should there be any unusual activity in a region.</p><p>Given the Russia-Ukraine War and increased political uncertainty, the need for militaries from around the world to have software like this is becoming even more vital. Their tagline is &#34;Thousands of Users, Millions of Sensors, A Single Pane of Glass&#34;, basically this means a single dashboard to monitor real time operations.</p><p><b>Apollo</b></p><p>The Apollo platform is used for managing production software across major organizations across multiple industries from Airbus to Hyundai and even Rio Tinto, one of the largest mining companies in the world. The sheer range of industries automatically expands the total addressable market for Palantir&#39;s software and thus makes the future growth runway huge.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/59da6851f565be219d049cbce43ad71f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"351\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Palantir Products (Q2 Earnings Report)</span></p><p><b>MetaConstellation</b></p><p>The MetaConstellation product enables the power of Satellite constellations to be harnessed on earth. This even enables Artificial Intelligence models to be leveraged in Orbit, which truly is the next frontier of business intelligence. Space is the next battleground for businesses from Elon Musk&#39;s Starlink to SpaceX and even Bezos Blue Origin. Palantir has recently scored a partnership with Satellogic a leader in Satellite Sub-Meter resolution imaging. &#34;Sub-Meter&#34; effectively means each pixel from a Satellite photograph is less than a meter in width and thus enables the monitoring and tracking of activities on earth. Applications include crop monitoring, disaster relief, military surveillance and even National Security. For all you traders, Satellite imagery has even been used to track oil reserves in containers and thus it can be used to calculate the supply/demand balance and then oil prices. Google also has a Satellite play called &#34;SkyBox&#34;, which it acquired for $500 million a few years back. Google&#39;s platform seems to be focused on improving it&#39;s mapping than for national security applications, like with the Palantir product.</p><p><b>High Retention Rate - Competitive Advantage</b></p><p>Palantir had a net dollar retention rate of 119% as of the second quarter. This means customers are staying with the company and spending more through upsells. In the second quarter conference call, Palantir Founder and CEO Alex Karp spoke in detail about the &#34;stickiness&#34; of Palantir&#39;s products with customers. He states that;</p><blockquote>&#34;In the end, all software products actually have to be measured by is this replaceable, how easy could it be replaced, is the underlying platform durable or fleeting, and could a third party highly technical with massive distribution disrupt these products?</blockquote><blockquote>It would take many, many years of the world&#39;s best engineers to build them -- and you would be building them as we&#39;ve improved them and as we capture the market.&#34; - Palantir CEO Alex Karp</blockquote><p><b>Slowing Second Quarter</b></p><p>Palantir released mixed financial results for the second quarter of 2022. Revenue increased by 26% year over year to $473 million. Now although growth rates were slower than prior quarters such as 30% YoY in Q1, they actually beat analyst estimates by $1.29 million.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/53639040a30e10857c4d577d3acb4b58\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"280\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>US Revenue (Q2 earnings report)</span></p><p>US only revenue popped by 45% year over year to $290 million and commercial revenue also grew a rapid 46% year over year. US commercial revenue was the shining light, as this increased by a blistering 120% year over year. With US Commercial customer count increasing by 250% year over year. This is a big deal as the company had just 34 US commercial customers in Q2 2021 and grew this to 119 customers by Q2 2022.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/40e7b1b024186667b53b85e60ca74bde\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"418\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>US Commercial Customers (Q2 Report)</span></p><p>Palantir&#39;s Healthcare segment also showed rapid growth of 267% year over year, from $42 million to $153 million in revenue. The company has previous scored partnerships with the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.</p><p>As a software company, Palantir has an extremely high adjusted gross margin of 81%, which has stayed fairly constant (only dipping by 1% percentage point year over year).</p><p>However, the company did produce a heavy loss of $42 million in Q2,22. Earnings Per Share (EPS) was -$0.01, which missed estimates by $0.04. This may seem terrible, but the company states it was driven primarily by losses in Marketable securities. This is a common trend I have seen across earnings reports for companies, as the rising interest rate environment is squeezing the multiples of growth stocks. The good news is Adjusted free cash flow was $61 million, which represents a 13% margin and the seventh consecutive quarter of positive free cash flow.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e5ece7c19769fe1edd7bfd16b12e3cdf\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"286\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Free Cash Flow (Palantir Q2)</span></p><p>The company also has a fortress balance sheet with $2.4 billion in cash and cash equivalents and no debt. In July the company expanded its revolving credit facility by adding $450 million in term loan facility and the option for an additional $950 million if required.</p><p><b>Revised Guidance</b></p><p>Management has revised its guidance down to $1.9 billion for FY22, this would represent just a 23% growth rate year over year. This is a far cry from the 41% growth rate achieved in the year FY21. CEO Alex Karp stated, this lower guidance was due to the &#34;uncertainty toward the end of the year&#34; and goes onto say;</p><blockquote>&#34;As organizations around the world face more pressure and experience more pain, there will be a slowdown in the rate of spending and lengthening of sales cycles, but it will also reveal gaps in enterprises operations, gaps our software can solve. In the short term, this means less revenue now. But on longer time horizons, it accelerates our business&#34; - Palantir CEO Alex Karp</blockquote><p>However, Karp remains &#34;very optimistic that the next three years will look a lot like the last three years&#34;.</p><p><b>Advanced Valuation</b></p><p>In order to value Palantir I have plugged the latest financials into my valuation model, which uses the discounted cash flow method of valuation. I have revised down my prior Revenue estimates of 30% to a 23% growth rate for next year and 28% over the next two to five years. As I believe high inflation won&#39;t last forever and the macroeconomic situation will improve. In addition, I suspect management may be &#34;sandbagging&#34; slightly to lower expectations and then surpass them.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e8d04beb678f88f509d0a855cb26660f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"233\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Palantir Stock Valuation 1 (created by author Ben at Motivation 2 invest)</span></p><p>I have also forecasted its operating margin to increase to 28% over the next 6 years, as the company benefits from high operating leverage from its software platform. In addition, to the high customer retention and upsells mentioned previously.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/411a99d5ee1786e88e1f18c60a8a4399\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"673\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Palantir Stock Valuation 2 (created by author Ben at Motivation 2 Invest)</span></p><p>Given these factors I get a fair value of $9.43 per share, the stock is trading at ~$9.62 and thus is fairly valued at the time of writing.</p><p>As an extra data point Palantir has seen its Price to Sales Ratio compress substantially from over 30 in 2021, to approximately 10 at the time of writing.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b8c31ecac9f324df08a74f01ce45c826\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"802\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>PLTR PS Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts</span></p><p><b>Risks</b></p><p><b>Macroeconomic uncertainty</b></p><p>The high inflation and rising interest rate environment has caused many analysts to forecast a &#34;Recession&#34;. We have already seen multiple companies start to cut costs and although I believe a lot of this is fear driven, it can lengthen the sales cycle for Business to Business product adoption.</p><p><b>Stock Based Compensation</b></p><p>Palantir states a lot of their earnings are &#34;Adjusted&#34;. In fact the word &#34;Adjusted&#34; is used a staggering 35 times in their recent press release. This Adjustment excludes &#34;Stock Based Compensation&#34; which was a staggering $146 million in Q2,22 or a whopping 30% of its $473 million in revenue. Now although this is having improved since the $233 million in Q2, 2021, it is a substantial expense which is overlooked. On a positive note, recruiting high quality talent is extremely challenging these days and thus companies must offer lucrative stock compensation packages to attract the best. As long as the amount of stock based compensation relative to total revenue declines over time, then this can be an effective strategy and thus it&#39;s an indicator to watch.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d9d43f9f6458b1a630d0427473b23dca\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"297\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Palantir Stock based Compensation (created by author Ben at Motivation 2 Invest)</span></p><p><b>Final Thoughts</b></p><p>Palantir is a best in class leader in software for enterprises and national security applications. The founder led company is growing its commercial revenue strong and has a large TAM to attack. This comes after a similar $6.6 billion goodwill impairment charge in the first quarter, which resulted in a net loss of $41.58 per share. In terms of other key operating metrics, total visits on the platform rose 27.6% year over year to 4.7 million, and the average revenue from its 56.6 million paid U.S. members climbed 12.6% to $2.60 per member.</p><p>Although management maintained its previously issued guidance for revenue and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), they now expect results to be toward the lower bound of those ranges due to ongoing macro conditions. Thus, for the full year, management forecasts total revenue of $2.4 to $2.5 billion, indicating 18.1% growth year over year if it meets the lower end. And it expects adjusted EBITDA to reach $240 million to $265 million, equal to a 10.4% decline if, once again, it hits the lower bound.</p><p>Although those aren&#39;t necessarily horrible growth rates, management&#39;s lack of visibility around the company&#39;s business in recent quarters should be of great concern to investors moving forward.</p><p>To add fuel to the fire, Amazon announced on July 21 a plan to acquire One Medical for $3.9 billion in an all-cash transaction. One Medical is a membership-based primary care provider with almost 200 locations and roughly 770,000 patients nationwide.  If the deal is approved, Amazon&#39;s healthcare footprint will become significantly larger, which could serve as a major threat to Teladoc.</p><h2>Is now an optimal time to buy Teladoc stock?</h2><p>For several quarters now, Teladoc&#39;s management has lacked visibility of the business, which is extremely concerning from an investor&#39;s standpoint. In the month of August, the multinational conglomerate has now sold off a total of 49.85 million shares, reducing its stake by 52%. The recent sale saw SoftBank sell 18.22  million shares on Aug. 16. After the sale, the firm now owns 45.42 million shares, equivalent to a 4.9% stake. In addition, SoftBank’s stake has now fallen below the 5% threshold that requires filers to file a 13D or 13G form. As a result, the conglomerate is not required to disclose any further sales of SOFI stock.</p><p>SoftBank’s first sale of SOFI was on Aug. 5. Since then, shares of the company have declined by about 15% as the stock struggles to find a price floor. What’s more, SoftBank hinted after its first sale that it may “sell some or all of their holdings of Shares of the Issuer [SoFi] in the open market.” So, why exactly is the firm selling out?</p><h3>Why Does SoftBank Keep Selling SOFI Stock?</h3><p>SoFi isn’t the only company SoftBank has sold. SoftBank also parted ways with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/UBER\">Uber</a> and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/OPEN\">Opendoor </a> for a gain of $5.6 billion.</p><p>SoftBank isn’t selling its stake in SoFi because of a lack of conviction. During Q2, the company reported a record loss of $23.4 billion as the value of its investments — both public and private — experienced major drawdowns. As a result, CEO Masayoshi Son explained that his company is taking a defensive stance in order to continue company operations. He explained, “Our vision remains the same, our beliefs remain the same. But we know we have to reduce operational costs, including headcount. For new investments, we have to be more selective.”</p><p>Meanwhile, SoFi reported strong Q2 earnings results, despite rising rates, inflation and the student loan moratorium. Revenue tallied in at $356 million, beating the consensus analyst estimate of $340.8 million by a healthy 4.5%.</p><p>Furthermore, the company raised full-year guidance for both adjusted net revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, deductions and amortizations (EBITDA). Full-year revenue is now expected to be between $1.508 billion and $1.513 billion, up from the previous guidance of between $1.505 billion and $1.51 billion. The benchmark <b>S&amp;P 500</b>, which is often Wall Street&#39;s favorite barometer of stock market health, turned in its worst first-half return in 52 years. Meanwhile, the technology-dependent <b>Nasdaq Composite</b> has been even worse, with a peak-to-trough decline of as much as 34% since November.</p><p>But in spite of this turmoil, investors have been absolutely enamored with the dozens of companies announcing stock splits this year.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/428021cbfd3168c84c60e0a8d38b75c6\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><p>A stock split allows a publicly traded company to alter its share price and outstanding share count without impacting its market cap or operations. It&#39;s the perfect tool for businesses to use to make their shares more affordable for everyday investors who might not otherwise have access to fractional-share purchases through their online brokerages.</p><p>Thus far in 2022, a number of exceptionally popular, high-profile stocks have announced and/or enacted stock splits. This includes:</p><ul><li><b>Amazon</b> (AMZN -0.26%), which declared and enacted a 20-for-1 stock split.</li><li><b>Shopify</b> (SHOP -2.26%), which announced and moved forward with a 10-for-1 stock split.</li><li><b>Tesla</b> (TSLA 3.10%), which announced a 3-for-1 split in June and gained approval from its shareholders on August 4 to conduct its split on Aug. 25, 2022.</li></ul><p>The $64,000 question is, &#34;Which stock-split stock makes for the better buy right now?&#34;</p><h2>Is Amazon the perfect stock to add to your shopping cart?</h2><p>First up is e-commerce giant Amazon, whose share price fell from a peak of $3,700 pre-split to the $140s on a post-split basis. It was the company&#39;s first stock split in more than two decades.</p><p>When most people hear the word &#34;Amazon,&#34; they immediately think of the company&#39;s leading online marketplace. This year, Amazon is expected to bring in about $0.40 of every $1 spent in online retail sales in the United States.  But this top-tier revenue segment typically generates low operating margins.</p><p>The far bigger story for Amazon is what&#39;s happening with its higher-margin initiatives, such as subscription services, advertising, and cloud services. For instance, the greater than 200 million people signed up for Prime worldwide bring in tens of billions of dollars in predictable, high-margin revenue for Amazon every year.</p><p>Amazon Web Services (AWS) should play an even more important role in growing Amazon&#39;s operating cash flow in the years that lie ahead. I say &#34;cash flow&#34; and not earnings given that Amazon loves to reinvest a significant portion of its operating cash flow into its logistics network and various growth initiatives. With AWS accounting for a third of global cloud-service spending in the first quarter, and this segment providing the bulk of Amazon&#39;s operating income, it could send Amazon&#39;s share price significantly higher.</p><h2>Should you checkout with Shopify?</h2><p>Another possibility for investors is to put their money to work in cloud-based e-commerce platform Shopify. After peaking at more than $1,700 prior to its split, shares of this beaten-down tech stock can be had for around $40 on a post-split basis.</p><p>What makes Shopify such an intriguing company from the standpoint of long-term investors is its addressable market. A presentation from 2021 estimated that Shopify&#39;s e-commerce platform has a $153 billion addressable market just from small businesses (i.e., it&#39;s bread-and-butter target). This doesn&#39;t even take into account the larger businesses that have begun utilizing Shopify&#39;s tools and data analytics. With Shopify on pace to bring in over $7 billion in revenue this year, the implication is that growth is still in the very early innings.</p><p>Innovation is another tool that should excite investors. Last year, Shopify launched Shop Pay, its very own buy now, pay later (BNPL) service designed to give merchants and their consumers more payment options. Although BNPL operators have been hammered recently by domestic and global economic weakness, it should ultimately be a positive for Shopify&#39;s vast network of merchants over the long run.</p><p>Shopify is using bolt-on acquisitions to its advantage, too. Last month, it completed the $2.1 billion cash-and-stock buyout of e-commerce fulfillment company Deliverr.  Buying Deliverr further compliments Shopify&#39;s Fulfillment Network and should give merchants more peace of mind when managing their inventory and direct-to-consumer sales.</p><h2>Can investors burn rubber with Tesla?</h2><p>The third potential stock-split stock to buy is electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla. The company&#39;s upcoming split will mark its second in two years.</p><p>The reason investors gravitate to Tesla is because of the company&#39;s competitive advantages. It&#39;s the first automaker to build itself from the ground up to mass production in more than five decades. Even with semiconductor chip shortages hurting production, and the company&#39;s Shanghai gigafactory being adversely impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns, Tesla looks to be well on its way to surpassing 1 million EV deliveries in a year for the first time.</p><p>In addition to production, Tesla has turned the corner to recurring profitability. Whereas the company had relied heavily on selling renewable energy credits (RECs) to other automakers prior to 2020, it&#39;s been generating generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) profits without the need for RECs to push it to a sizable profit. In each of the past five quarters, Tesla has delivered a GAAP profit ranging from $1.14 billion to $3.32 billion.</p><p>Tesla&#39;s success is also a reflection of investors&#39; belief in CEO Elon Musk as an innovator. As CEO, Musk has helped diversify his company&#39;s operations -- e.g., Tesla provides energy storage systems and installs solar panels via subsidiaries -- and has kept the company&#39;s user base excited about upcoming innovations, such as Tesla Bot, a robotic humanoid that could serve a variety of purposes.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a3d04332f26103c280e356ba7a8e2d51\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><h2>The better stock-split stock to buy right now is...</h2><p>Ultimately, Amazon, Shopify, and Tesla wouldn&#39;t have announced stock splits if their respective share prices hadn&#39;t significantly risen following great execution. But only one of these three stock-split stocks stands out as the clear better buy right now.</p><p>In my view, it&#39;s certainly <i>not</i> Tesla. The biggest issue with Tesla just might be Elon Musk. Aside from drawing the ire of the Securities and Exchange Commission on multiple occasions, Musk has continually overpromised and underdelivered as CEO. While the company&#39;s share price would say others, we&#39;ve seen delays to practically every major project or innovation proposed by Musk, including robotaxis and the Cybertruck, among others.</p><p>Tesla is also quite expensive. Whereas most auto stocks trade at single-digit forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios, Tesla will have investors paying about 54 times Wall Street&#39;s forecast earnings in 2023 for a company that&#39;ll likely see its competitive advantages wane over time.</p><p>Despite it being a popular buy right now, I don&#39;t believe Shopify is the answer, either. This is a retail-driven company that&#39;s susceptible to slower growth from rapidly rising interest rates and contracting U.S. gross domestic product. While there&#39;s no question Shopify has a delectably large addressable market, the company has a lot of work to do on its bottom-line to attract long-term investors.</p><p>The stock-split stock that&#39;s the absolute best buy of the three right now is Amazon.</p><p>Although its P/E ratio is an eye-popper for all the wrong reasons, the P/E ratio is a poor way to measure value with Amazon. As noted, because Amazon reinvests most of its operating cash flow back into its business, price-to-cash-flow is a far better measure of value.</p><p>Between 2010 and 2019, investors paid a year-end multiple of 23 to 37 times year-end cash flow. Based on Wall Street&#39;s 2025 forecast, which takes into account AWS growing into a larger percentage of total sales, Amazon is valued at just 10 times cash flow. If Amazon hits this estimate, it would be the cheapest shares have ever been. The benchmark S&P 500, which is often Wall Street's favorite barometer of stock market health, turned in its worst first-half return in 52 years. Meanwhile, the technology-dependent Nasdaq Composite has been even worse, with a peak-to-trough decline of as much as 34% since November.But in spite of this turmoil, investors have been absolutely enamored with the dozens of companies announcing stock splits this year.Image source: Getty Images.A stock split allows a publicly traded company to alter its share price and outstanding share count without impacting its market cap or operations. It's the perfect tool for businesses to use to make their shares more affordable for everyday investors who might not otherwise have access to fractional-share purchases through their online brokerages.Thus far in 2022, a number of exceptionally popular, high-profile stocks have announced and/or enacted stock splits. This includes:Amazon (AMZN -0.26%), which declared and enacted a 20-for-1 stock split.Shopify (SHOP -2.26%), which announced and moved forward with a 10-for-1 stock split.Tesla (TSLA 3.10%), which announced a 3-for-1 split in June and gained approval from its shareholders on August 4 to conduct its split on Aug. 25, 2022.The $64,000 question is, \"Which stock-split stock makes for the better buy right now?\"Is Amazon the perfect stock to add to your shopping cart?First up is e-commerce giant Amazon, whose share price fell from a peak of $3,700 pre-split to the $140s on a post-split basis. It was the company's first stock split in more than two decades.When most people hear the word \"Amazon,\" they immediately think of the company's leading online marketplace. This year, Amazon is expected to bring in about $0.40 of every $1 spent in online retail sales in the United States.  But this top-tier revenue segment typically generates low operating margins.The far bigger story for Amazon is what's happening with its higher-margin initiatives, such as subscription services, advertising, and cloud services. For instance, the greater than 200 million people signed up for Prime worldwide bring in tens of billions of dollars in predictable, high-margin revenue for Amazon every year.Amazon Web Services (AWS) should play an even more important role in growing Amazon's operating cash flow in the years that lie ahead. I say \"cash flow\" and not earnings given that Amazon loves to reinvest a significant portion of its operating cash flow into its logistics network and various growth initiatives. With AWS accounting for a third of global cloud-service spending in the first quarter, and this segment providing the bulk of Amazon's operating income, it could send Amazon's share price significantly higher.Should you checkout with Shopify?Another possibility for investors is to put their money to work in cloud-based e-commerce platform Shopify. After peaking at more than $1,700 prior to its split, shares of this beaten-down tech stock can be had for around $40 on a post-split basis.What makes Shopify such an intriguing company from the standpoint of long-term investors is its addressable market. A presentation from 2021 estimated that Shopify's e-commerce platform has a $153 billion addressable market just from small businesses (i.e., it's bread-and-butter target). This doesn't even take into account the larger businesses that have begun utilizing Shopify's tools and data analytics. With Shopify on pace to bring in over $7 billion in revenue this year, the implication is that growth is still in the very early innings.Innovation is another tool that should excite investors. Last year, Shopify launched Shop Pay, its very own buy now, pay later (BNPL) service designed to give merchants and their consumers more payment options. Although BNPL operators have been hammered recently by domestic and global economic weakness, it should ultimately be a positive for Shopify's vast network of merchants over the long run.Shopify is using bolt-on acquisitions to its advantage, too. Last month, it completed the $2.1 billion cash-and-stock buyout of e-commerce fulfillment company Deliverr.  Buying Deliverr further compliments Shopify's Fulfillment Network and should give merchants more peace of mind when managing their inventory and direct-to-consumer sales.Can investors burn rubber with Tesla?The third potential stock-split stock to buy is electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla. The company's upcoming split will mark its second in two years.The reason investors gravitate to Tesla is because of the company's competitive advantages. It's the first automaker to build itself from the ground up to mass production in more than five decades. Even with semiconductor chip shortages hurting production, and the company's Shanghai gigafactory being adversely impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns, Tesla looks to be well on its way to surpassing 1 million EV deliveries in a year for the first time.In addition to production, Tesla has turned the corner to recurring profitability. Whereas the company had relied heavily on selling renewable energy credits (RECs) to other automakers prior to 2020, it's been generating generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) profits without the need for RECs to push it to a sizable profit. In each of the past five quarters, Tesla has delivered a GAAP profit ranging from $1.14 billion to $3.32 billion.Tesla's success is also a reflection of investors' belief in CEO Elon Musk as an innovator. As CEO, Musk has helped diversify his company's operations -- e.g., Tesla provides energy storage systems and installs solar panels via subsidiaries -- and has kept the company's user base excited about upcoming innovations, such as Tesla Bot, a robotic humanoid that could serve a variety of purposes.Image source: Getty Images.The better stock-split stock to buy right now is...Ultimately, Amazon, Shopify, and Tesla wouldn't have announced stock splits if their respective share prices hadn't significantly risen following great execution. But only one of these three stock-split stocks stands out as the clear better buy right now.In my view, it's certainly not Tesla. The biggest issue with Tesla just might be Elon Musk. Aside from drawing the ire of the Securities and Exchange Commission on multiple occasions, Musk has continually overpromised and underdelivered as CEO. While the company's share price would say others, we've seen delays to practically every major project or innovation proposed by Musk, including robotaxis and the Cybertruck, among others.Tesla is also quite expensive. Whereas most auto stocks trade at single-digit forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios, Tesla will have investors paying about 54 times Wall Street's forecast earnings in 2023 for a company that'll likely see its competitive advantages wane over time.Despite it being a popular buy right now, I don't believe Shopify is the answer, either. This is a retail-driven company that's susceptible to slower growth from rapidly rising interest rates and contracting U.S. gross domestic product. While there's no question Shopify has a delectably large addressable market, the company has a lot of work to do on its bottom-line to attract long-term investors.The stock-split stock that's the absolute best buy of the three right now is Amazon.Although its P/E ratio is an eye-popper for all the wrong reasons, the P/E ratio is a poor way to measure value with Amazon. As noted, because Amazon reinvests most of its operating cash flow back into its business, price-to-cash-flow is a far better measure of value.Between 2010 and 2019, investors paid a year-end multiple of 23 to 37 times year-end cash flow. Based on Wall Street's 2025 forecast, which takes into account AWS growing into a larger percentage of total sales, Amazon is valued at just 10 times cash flow. If Amazon hits this estimate, it would be the cheapest shares have ever been.
