The S&P 500 rose 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.4%.
\n

\n
The August consumer price index, while still showing a significant jump in inflation, came in less than feared. August CPI jumped 0.3% month-to-month, or 5.3% from a year earlier, below the 0.4% increase and 5.4% annual gain expected respectively by economists polled by Dow Jones.
\n
The less volatile core reading excluding food and energy costs showed just a slight gain, up 0.1% and below the 0.3% consensus increase expected by economists.
\n
\"The important piece of the news is that we're showing sequential improvement, which is exactly what we need to see,\" said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities.
\n
The Federal Reserve is monitoring key economic indicators like inflation readings as it decides when to taper its pandemic-era easy monetary policy. The Fed begins a two-day policy meeting on September 21.
\n
\"I believe the Fed will talk about tapering in September and not announce it until the November meeting and then put it in place before the end of the year,\" Hogan said.
\n
Apple shares ticked slightly higher ahead of an event Tuesday where it's expected to announce new versions of the iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch.
\n
The major averages are all down at least 1% for September, and RBC doesn’t see the S&P 500 surging into the end of the year. The firm raised its year-end target for the benchmark index to 4,500 on Monday, up from a prior target of 4,325. The new target is less than 1% above where the index closed on Monday. The firm also introduced a 2022 year-end target of 4,900.
\n
“We continue to think the S&P 500 will experience a bout of volatility/meaningful pullback before the year is up, a call that we’ve been making for the past several months due to elevated equity market sentiment and positioning,” the firm wrote in a note to clients.
\n
“While we take the reasons for a pullback seriously, we also see economic recession risks as low, reducing the likelihood of a full growth scare, and intend to treat it as a buying opportunity,” RBC added.
\n
On Monday, the Dow and S&P both advanced for the first time in six sessions as investors bet that some recent selling looked overdone. The Dow gained about 260 points, or 0.76%, after at one point during the session rising nearly 1%. The S&P advanced 0.23%.
\n
Stocks linked to the economic reopening on Monday – including airlines and cruise line operators — rebounded slightly after the seven-day daily U.S. Covid case average declined to around 144,300, down from roughly 167,600 cases per day at the beginning of the month.
\n
“In the near-term, we expect increased stock market volatility, although long-term investors should use pullbacks to add to stock exposure,” noted Richard Saperstein, chief investment officer at Treasury Partners. “The next six weeks tend to be seasonally weak for stocks, which is an additional worry for a stock market that is already facing elevated valuations and a lack of near-term upside catalysts,” he added.
\n
The National Federation of Independent Business will also release its latest survey on Tuesday, which will provide investors with a pulse on how small businesses are faring.
\n
In Washington, House Democrats proposed new tax hikes to pay for the $3.5 trillion spending package. A milestone reached at record speed and delivered on schedule as previously communicated by IVECO, the commercial vehicles brand of CNH Industrial, and Nikola Corporation. The first Nikola Tre models produced here will be delivered to select customers inthe United Statesin 2022. In addition to the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) production model, the next evolution of this modular heavy-duty platform was also on display to the public in the form of the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) prototype of the Nikola Tre. This subsequent model will enter production in Ulm by the end of 2023.
\n
Today's launch event was hosted in accordance with current COVID-19 standards and was limited to a select gathering of about 100 international and national stakeholders and media. Among those in attendance wereGerrit Marx, President Commercial & Specialty Vehicles at CNH Industrial and designated CEO of the Iveco Group;Mark Russell, Chief Executive Officer and President of Nikola;Winfried Herrmann, State Minister of Transport in Baden-Württemberg;Martin Bendel, First Mayor of the city of Ulm;Massimiliano Lagi, Consul General ofItalyinStuttgart, Germany.
\n
\"Despite all the industry and global pandemic challenges we have been facing since we first announced this partnership inSeptember 2019, it is extremely rewarding to be able to stand here today as a team and witness the execution of all of our hard work delivered on time and according to our original plans,\" saidGerrit Marxduring his opening address. \"Thanks to IVECO's proven expertise and established footprint we have provided a platform upon which Nikola's technology can thrive. Now our focus is on ensuring the success of this operation and jointly taking the lead when it comes to climate-neutral long- and short-haul heavy-duty transport.\"
\n
Spanning 50,000 square meters, of which 25,000 are covered, the Ulm manufacturing facility features a final assembly process that has been designed for \"electric-born\" vehicles. This site, and first phase of industrialization, represents joint investment by IVECO and Nikola and involves a projected 160 suppliers in the process from start to finish. The production line is currently anticipated to be capable of manufacturing approximately 1,000 units per shift per year and is expected to undergo progressive ramp-up in the following years. The site is expected to operate according to the principles of the World Class Manufacturing programme, with the goal of achieving zero waste, zero accidents, zero failures and zero stock, confirmed by its key characteristics which include fully digital shopfloor management designed to guarantee 100% traceability and paperless operations.
\n
\"This new facility is beautiful, and we are grateful to the IVECO and Nikola teams for their collaboration and perseverance to bring it to life,\" said Nikola CEOMark Russell. \"This is yet another important milestone for Nikola as we execute on our strategy and vision to be a global leader in zero-emissions transportation solutions.\"
\n
Designed and projected as a safe, reliable and high-performance, zero-emission transport solution, the Nikola Tre is driving change for the sector.
