The bad news is it's still deep in the red, and only selling a fraction of the number of tickets it was selling before the pandemic took hold.
\n
None of this is terribly shocking, of course. A year earlier, the world was largely shut down due to COVID-19. Though the contagion is still with us, consumers and businesses alike are coping. Theaters in the U.S. were mostly reopened by March -- before AMC's second quarter began -- and studios were at least willing to give theaters a try. Universal's Fast and Furious series entry F9 debuted in June, catching the tail end of the quarter in question. A Quiet Place, Part II, and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard were also released in May and June, respectively. Godzilla vs. Kong was in theaters back in April. They weren't necessarily must-sees, but for newly vaccinated movie-goers ready to get out and do something close to normal again, they were something.
\n
As it turns out, though, they were still very little. The most recent results are clearly better than the non-existent numbers being produced a year ago, but still, we're miles away from the pre-pandemic norm. The company's also still deep in the red, reporting an operating loss of $296.6 million and negative adjusted EBITDA of $150.8 million.
\n
Neither the numbers nor the trend should be surprising, even if analysts and investors alike could only make broad guesses given that the turnaround remains a work in progress. The wide deviation from its market value suggests shareholders are pricing in a significant decline in the assets’ earnings power. In terms of dollar amounts, its shares have lost $15 billion in value since this year’s January high.
\n
The collapse in the valuation of the shares is a problem for a heavily indebted company with narrowing options for raising funds. It’s not just its own shares: subsidiary Evergrande Property Services has lost about $17 billion in value since its February high, while Evergrande New Energy Vehicle is down more than $60 billion in the period. Evergrande controls more than 60% of both firms. The value of Hengten Networks -- a Hong Kong-listed internet services provider in which Evergrande has a 38% stake -- has dropped about $15 billion.
\n
The company’s access to freely available cash is also shrinking. After the shares plunged 16% on Monday following the freezing of a bank deposit, a city in Hunan province halted sales at two of the company’s residential projects, alleging the developer didn’t properly handle funds. The suspension will last until Oct. 13 and Evergrande can’t use funds currently deposited in supervised bank accounts, according to a statement.
\n
Evergrande will discuss plans for a special dividend to its shareholders at a board meeting on July 27. The developer is unlikely to fund such a plan with cash, according to CCB International analysts. The wide deviation from its market value suggests shareholders are pricing in a significant decline in the assets’ earnings power. In terms of dollar amounts, its shares have lost $15 billion in value since this year’s January high.\nThe collapse in the valuation of the shares is a problem for a heavily indebted company with narrowing options for raising funds. It’s not just its own shares: subsidiary Evergrande Property Services has lost about $17 billion in value since its February high, while Evergrande New Energy Vehicle is down more than $60 billion in the period. Evergrande controls more than 60% of both firms. The value of Hengten Networks -- a Hong Kong-listed internet services provider in which Evergrande has a 38% stake -- has dropped about $15 billion.\nThe company’s access to freely available cash is also shrinking. After the shares plunged 16% on Monday following the freezing of a bank deposit, a city in Hunan province halted sales at two of the company’s residential projects, alleging the developer didn’t properly handle funds. The suspension will last until Oct. 13 and Evergrande can’t use funds currently deposited in supervised bank accounts, according to a statement.\nEvergrande will discuss plans for a special dividend to its shareholders at a board meeting on July 27. The developer is unlikely to fund such a plan with cash, according to CCB International analysts. They predict the most likely outcome would involve a share distribution in one of its units, namely Evergrande New Energy Vehicle, but the value of those shares is fast evaporating.\nThe company’s bonds are also pricing in a bleak outcome for the developer. Evergrande’s 8.75% dollar bond due 2025 trades at 58.5 cents, Bloomberg-compiled prices show. That’s down from 82.9 cents at the beginning of the year. It rose for a seventh day, the longest winning streak since April, propelling its market value to $2.4 trillion. Its shares remain slightly below an intraday record of $145.09, also set in January.\n“Apple has really woken up over the past month, and over the short term its business prospects are pretty good,” said David Katz, chief investment officer at Matrix AssetAdvisors. Its shares have advanced about 9% this year, trailing the double-digit gains of other megatech firms as investors waited for more information on its growth potential while its peers reported strong developments in their key businesses. The S&P 500 Index, of which Apple is the biggest contributor with a 6.2% weighting, has gained 16%.\nJPMorganrecommendedinvestors buy Apple shares after they lagged their tech peers and the broader market in the first half of this year. “Time to start buying again,” analyst Samik Chatterjee said in the report on Tuesday. Typically, IPOs offer companies the ability to build capital. Before a company becomes publicly listed, it must meet SEC requirements and work with investment banks through audits to determine pricing, offering date, and other important data points before the offering.Companies and investment banks will work to establish a price range that the stock is expected to sell between. This is known as an offering range. Once a company goes public, its stock comes with an opening price. The insider lock-up period is usually a set number of days after an IPO where company insiders, or employees with a 10% or higher stake in their company, cannot sell shares.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":381,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3575437443107611","authorId":"3575437443107611","name":"MoneyCum","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3575437443107611","idStr":"3575437443107611"},"content":"Comments back thanks.","text":"Comments back thanks.","html":"Comments back thanks."}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":102329384,"gmtCreate":1620178535148,"gmtModify":1704339778820,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GENTING SINGAPORE LIMITED(G13.SI)$hold","listText":"$GENTING SINGAPORE LIMITED(G13.SI)$hold","text":"$GENTING SINGAPORE LIMITED(G13.SI)$hold","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e3fb4473a015743f63bcea8bb4b20542","width":"1170","height":"2026"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/102329384","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":242,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":140860423,"gmtCreate":1625646674662,"gmtModify":1703745568335,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment","listText":"comment","text":"comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/140860423","repostId":"1131738801","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1131738801","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1625645247,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1131738801?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-07 16:07","market":"us","language":"en","title":"XPeng shares fell 3% in premarket trading.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1131738801","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"XPeng shares fell 3% in premarket trading.\nShares of Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng Inc trade ","content":"
XPeng shares fell 3% in premarket trading.
\n
Shares of Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng Inc trade as low as HK$159.30, down 3.5% from the offer price of HK$165 apiece in the company's dual primary listing debut in Hong Kong.
\n
Xpeng, which on Wednesday raised $1.8 bln by selling 85 mln shares in Hong Kong listing, will develop future models based on product platforms designed for international markets, its chief executive said
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The insider lock-up period is usually a set number of days after an IPO where company insiders, or employees with a 10% or higher stake in their company, cannot sell shares.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":381,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3575437443107611","authorId":"3575437443107611","name":"MoneyCum","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3575437443107611","idStr":"3575437443107611"},"content":"Comments back thanks.","text":"Comments back thanks.","html":"Comments back thanks."}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":830920170,"gmtCreate":1629002266690,"gmtModify":1676529908652,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"woohoo","listText":"woohoo","text":"woohoo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/830920170","repostId":"2159145532","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2159145532","pubTimestamp":1628993103,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2159145532?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-15 10:05","market":"us","language":"en","title":"AMC's \"Better\" Isn't the Same Thing as \"Good\"","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2159145532","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The theater chain's recently ended quarter serves up the expected glimmer of a recovery, but things are still nowhere near normal.","content":"
The good news is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) topped last quarter's revenue and earnings estimates. The tech giant’s stock is expected make a comeback in the second half on a resilient volume outlook for the iPhone 12 series and strong expectations for the next iPhone, he added.\nThe rotation out of growth stocks into the value trade earlier this year may have held its rally back but other members of the FAANMG group are still posting strong returns. Microsoft Corp. is up 26% in 2021 afterrecently joiningApple as being one of only two U.S. public companies to be valued at more than $2 trillion. Amazon.com Inc. has climbed about 14% this year, while Alphabet Inc. rallied 44% and Facebook Inc. advanced about 28%. The Nasdaq 100 Index has risen 15%.\n“In the first half of the year it took a bit of a breather as the market rotated into value names that had been left for dead and did look attractive,” said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at Phoenix Financial. “Some tactical money went out of names like Apple and into names like energy, but I think that rotation has mostly run its course.”\nApple is expected to report third-quarter earnings later this month.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":274,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"4088748055325860","authorId":"4088748055325860","name":"Kencom","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bcaa9548fb78e0409a2827c590935dab","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"authorIdStr":"4088748055325860","idStr":"4088748055325860"},"content":"Pre market price down to 141.75. think it is influenced by today Asian & Europe index on the downtrend","text":"Pre market price down to 141.75. think it is influenced by today Asian & Europe index on the downtrend","html":"Pre market price down to 141.75. think it is influenced by today Asian & Europe index on the downtrend"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":140863147,"gmtCreate":1625646736889,"gmtModify":1703745570657,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment","listText":"comment","text":"comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/140863147","repostId":"1188563923","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":221,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110187166,"gmtCreate":1622431133755,"gmtModify":1704184314465,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment & like. The countdown seemed to be on until major cannabis reforms were passed at the federal level. However, there haven't been any truly meaningful wins at the legislative level so far.

That doesn't mean that cannabis companies haven't made significant progress over the last few months, though. Some of them are arguably even more attractive than they were after Election Day. Granted, the company absolutely dominated the medical cannabis market in that one state -- Florida. And, sure, Trulieve had taken steps to expand into other markets. However, there were some valid reasons to be skeptical about the company's ability to replicate its success beyond Florida.

That's no longer the case. Earlier this month, Trulieve announced plans to acquire Harvest Health & Recreation (OTC:HRVSF) in an all-stock transaction valued at $2.1 billion. This deal will add operations in five additional states for Trulieve, including the fast-growing markets in Arizona and Nevada.

The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of 2021. Assuming there are no roadblocks, Trulieve should soon boost its estimated total addressable market by more than 50%. The combined company will also be the most profitable U.S. multistate operator based on adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA).

In the meantime, Trulieve continues to deliver sizzling growth all on its own. The company's sales more than doubled year over year in the first quarter thanks mainly to expansion in Florida. Trulieve also posted strong earnings growth. The addition of Harvest will make this winning marijuana stock even more attractive.

Jushi Holdings

Although there hasn't been tangible progress in recent months at the federal level in improving the outlook for the U.S. cannabis industry, it's a different story at the state level. For example, Virginia's legislature voted to legalize adult-use recreational marijuana. That should present a great opportunity for Jushi Holdings (OTC:JUSHF).

Virginia isn't exactly in a hurry. The state's adult-use market won't open until 2024. However, that actually could work to Jushi's advantage.

The company already owns a medical cannabis license in northern Virginia, home to almost 30% of the state's population. Look for Jushi to build up its brand in the medical cannabis market over the next couple of years. That could give it a strong competitive position for the recreational market that's on the way.

Jushi's growth prospects aren't dependent just on Virginia, though. The company has operations in California, Illinois, Nevada, and Pennsylvania with acquisitions pending in Massachusetts and Ohio.

Scotts Miracle-Gro

Investors who might be a little skittish about buying shares of a pure-play pot stock have several appealing alternatives. I think that Scotts Miracle-Gro (NYSE:SMG) ranks as one of the best.

You're probably at least somewhat familiar with Scotts' line of consumer lawn and garden products. That business remains the company's biggest source of revenue, generating roughly three-quarters of total sales in the latest quarter.

However, Scotts' main growth driver now is its Hawthorne segment. Hawthorne is a leading supplier of hydroponics and gardening products to the cannabis industry. Its revenue soared 66% year over year in Scotts' fiscal second quarter.

CEO Jim Hagedorn said in the company's Q2 conference call, \"Whether we see federal reform with this administration or not, clearly the momentum at the state level is not slowing down. A key inflation indicator, the core personal consumption expenditures index, rose 3.1% in April from a year earlier, faster than the forecast 2.9% increase. Central bank chief Jerome Powell said the rising costs should be transitory, but market participants are looking for any clues about how to play even the temporary change in prices.\nGoldman looked at periods of higher inflation since 1962 and found the median monthly market return has been 2% annualized in phases when inflation was high and rising compared with a 15% gain when inflation was high and falling.\nPlus, stocks returned an annualized 4% when inflation was low and rising and a whopping 19% when inflation was low and falling, Goldman said. Overall, when inflation was high, stocks returned 9% and when inflation was low, stocks gained 15%, according to Goldman.\nThe Wall Street firm categorized the periods of inflation by comparing year-over-year core Consumer Price Indexes with the Federal Reserve’s estimate of consensus long-term inflation expectations.\nHow to play it\nGiven the historic inflation data, Goldman also told clients the best way to play the periods of rising costs.\n“Within the market, periods of high inflation have corresponded with the outperformance of the Health Care, Energy, Real Estate, and Consumer Staples sectors,” said Kostin.\nMaterials and technology stocks have fared the worst during inflationary regimes, the firm said.\nGoldman also told clients a good way to trade higher inflation is to own stocks with high and stable gross margins. Gross margin is the sales revenue a company is left over with after the costs associated with producing the goods are subtracted. In other words, these companies have pricing power.\nTake a look at Goldman’s list of stocks with high and stable gross margins.\nNames such as Adobe, Aspen Technology, Activision Blizzard, Etsy and Williams Companies made it on Goldman’s list.\nZoetis, Philip Morris International, IHS Markit, Under Armour and PPG Industries also earned spots on Goldman’s list.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":217,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3574547619690492","authorId":"3574547619690492","name":"UTOtrader","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/82be6befb29ac8516e463638d3f659d5","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3574547619690492","idStr":"3574547619690492"},"content":"where is this place?","text":"where is this place?","html":"where is this place?"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":102329384,"gmtCreate":1620178535148,"gmtModify":1704339778820,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GENTING SINGAPORE LIMITED(G13.SI)$hold","listText":"$GENTING SINGAPORE LIMITED(G13.SI)$hold","text":"$GENTING SINGAPORE LIMITED(G13.SI)$hold","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e3fb4473a015743f63bcea8bb4b20542","width":"1170","height":"2026"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/102329384","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":242,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":149214894,"gmtCreate":1625729805318,"gmtModify":1703747271700,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment","listText":"comment","text":"comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/149214894","repostId":"2149314155","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":563,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":884054557,"gmtCreate":1631842077879,"gmtModify":1676530649663,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"hi, newbie here[Cool] ","listText":"hi, newbie here[Cool] ","text":"hi, newbie here[Cool]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/884054557","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":605,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":178907650,"gmtCreate":1626778681770,"gmtModify":1703764998238,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment","listText":"comment","text":"comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/178907650","repostId":"1138936937","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":162,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":178904801,"gmtCreate":1626778594303,"gmtModify":1703764996398,"author":{"id":"3581496976782504","authorId":"3581496976782504","name":"SSY_","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88b501e3b25c313f620e167a0620c21c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581496976782504","idStr":"3581496976782504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"nice","listText":"nice","text":"nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/178904801","repostId":"1134513535","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":236,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
