The decline of this magnitude is prompting some proponents of this asset class to jump in and buy this beaten-down stock.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/34645400c459bdd55a45a1fb5649c585\" tg-width=\"1290\" tg-height=\"1094\"><span>COIN 2 Hr</span></p>\n<p>Ark Invest’s Cathie Wood is doubling down on her Coinbase bet, snapping up more shares of the cryptocurrency exchange as its value declines. Wood has purchased more than $90 million of Coinbase since Monday, according to the firm’s trading wrapper.</p>\n<p>The head of Ark Investment Management said in an interview on Bloomberg TV that she still expects the cryptocurrency to reach a price of $500,000.</p>\n<p>She said:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “We go through soul searching times like this and scrape the models, and yes our conviction is just as high.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Sharp moves in cryptocurrencies should not scare investors away from the strong underlying business of Coinbase, according to investment firm Wedbush. Analyst Moshe Katri, while initiating coverage of the stock this week, assigned an “outperform rating” to it with a price target of $275 a share.</p>\n<p>According to the note:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “We view COIN as a ‘one stop shop’ platform, enabling roughly 56 million retail users, 8,000 institutions, and 134,000 ecosystem partners in over 100 countries to participate in the crypto economy.”\n</blockquote>\n<p><b>Bitcoin Bubble Near Bursting?</b></p>\n<p>These bullish calls have some rationale, but retail investors should note that Coinbase’s revenue is built almost entirely on the performance of Bitcoin andEthereum, which are showing signs of peaking in the current cycle. And if this is the beginning of a bubble being burst, then we still have a long way to go.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin has experienced two crashes of more than 80% in its short history. Another such crash will mean reduced profitability for Coinbase, which generates most of its revenue from trading fees. The extreme volatility this week suggests that a crash of this magnitude is still possible.</p>\n<p>The recent price fall accelerated after Elon Musk, who has a cult-type following in the speculative trading community, said Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) would cease accepting Bitcoin as a payment option for its electric cars, pointing to environmental hazards its mining process creates. That sudden U-turn came after months of bullish comments he made about Bitcoin,Dogecoin&nbsp;and other digital currencies, becoming one of the biggest market movers.</p>\n<p>After Musk’s shock came the People’s Bank of China statement that reiterated that digital tokens can’t be used as a form of payment. China has in the past issued other restrictions on cryptocurrencies, but the new ban and the reaction shows the crypto market is still sensitive to regulatory efforts.</p>\n<p>Adding to regulatory concerns is the statement made by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in January during her confirmation hearing that many cryptocurrencies are used “mainly for illicit financing, and I think we really need to examine ways in which we can curtail their use.”</p>\n<p><b>Bottom Line</b></p>\n<p>Coinbase stock has become attractive after a sharp pullback, providing long-term investors a chance to buy this name at a much cheaper price than a month ago when its stock was trading above $400.</p>\n<p>But the ongoing volatility in the market and the possibility of regulatory actions may hurt the company’s revenue going forward. For die hards, the renewed slumps in Bitcoin and other tokens have done nothing to deter crypto enthusiasts who say digital coins could many times their current value if they transform the financial system.</p>\n<p>“We’re looking at the long-term and so these blips, they don’t faze us,” Emilie Choi, president and chief operating officer of crypto exchange Coinbase Global Inc., said last week on Bloomberg TV about the wild swings prevalent in the market. “You’re looking for the long-term opportunity and you kind of buckle up and go for it.”</p>\n<p>Seat belts were needed by anyone watching the crypto world in the past eight days. Aside from Musk’s antics that sent Doge and Bitcoin on wild rides, a host of other developments pushed around prices.</p>\n<p>Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin, disclosed a reserves breakdown that showed a large portion in unspecified commercial paper. Steve Cohen’s Point72 Asset Management announced that it would begin trading cryptocurrencies. And a longstanding critique of the space reared its head again: illicit usage.</p>\n<p>It was reported that the owners of the Colonial Pipeline paid a $5 million ransom in untraceable digital currencies to hackers that attacked its infrastructure, while Bloomberg also reported that Binance Holdings Ltd., the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, was under investigation by the Justice Department and Internal Revenue Service in relation to possible money-laundering and tax offenses.</p>\n<p>But, “for many crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, the long-term story has not changed,” said Simon Peters, an analyst at multi-asset investment platform eToro. “This emerging asset class continues to revolutionize many aspects of financial services, and while nothing goes up in a straight line, the long-term fundamentals for crypto assets remain as solid as ever.”</p>\n<p>Bitcoin was already swinging wildly on the weekend before Musk tweeted. The two days tend to be particularly volatile for cryptocurrencies, which -- unlike most traditional assets -- trade around the clock every day of the week. Bitcoin’s average swing on Saturdays and Sundays so far this year comes in at 4.95%.</p>\n<p>That type of volatility is owing to a few factors: Bitcoin’s held by relatively few people, meaning that price swings can be magnified during low-volume periods.
