referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><b>Stocks making the biggest moves premarket:</b></p>\n<p><b>1)&nbsp;Canopy Growth(CGC)</b> – The Canadian cannabis producer’s shares rose 1.9% premarket after it posted an unexpected quarterly profit on rising marijuana demand and cost cuts. The gain comes even as revenue falls short of Wall Street forecasts.</p>\n<p><b>2)&nbsp;Gannett(GCI) </b>– The USA Today publisher earned 10 cents per share for its latest quarter, compared with forecasts of a 36 cents per share loss. Revenue also topped Wall Street forecasts. The company saw digital subscriber numbers jump 41% from a year earlier, and the stock rallied 6.3% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>3)&nbsp;DraftKings(DKNG)</b> – The sports betting company’s stock jumped 3.5% premarket after it reported better-than-expected quarterly profit and revenue and raised its revenue forecast for the full year. DraftKings saw significant gains in a number of key metrics, including a 26% jump in monthly revenue per user.</p>\n<p><b>4)&nbsp;Novavax(NVAX)</b> – Novavax shares tumbled 11.7% in premarket trading after the drugmaker said it would delay seeking emergency use authorization for its Covid-19 vaccine until the fourth quarter. Novavax also posted a wider-than-expected loss and saw revenue fall below Wall Street forecasts.</p>\n<p><b>5)&nbsp;Didi Global(DIDI)</b> – Didi gained 4.1% in premarket action, following a Bloomberg report saying the China-based ride-hailing company was considering giving up control of its data to help resolve a regulatory probe by the Chinese government.</p>\n<p><b>6)&nbsp;Zillow Group(ZG)</b> - Zillow reported adjusted quarterly earnings of 44 cents per share, 20 cents above estimates, with the real estate website operator’s revenue above estimates as well. Zillow also gave an upbeat growth forecast, as it scales up its home-flipping business, and said it expects sales this quarter to exceed $2 billion for the first time. Zillow added 1.8% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>7)&nbsp;Virgin Galactic(SPCE)</b> – Virgin Galactic lost 39 cents per share for its latest quarter, 6 cents more than expected, though the space flight company did report much better-than-expected revenue. It also announced it will sell seats for space tourism flights at $450,000 and up. The stock was up 3.1% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>8)&nbsp;Beyond Meat(BYND)</b> – Beyond Meat slid 3.7% in premarket action after it reported a quarterly loss of 31 cents per share, 7 cents wider than expected. Revenue for the maker of plant-based meat alternatives did come in above Street forecasts, but it gave a cautious outlook due to “more conservative” orders by its customers due to Covid-related uncertainty.</p>\n<p><b>9)&nbsp;Dropbox(DBX) </b>– Dropbox shares gained 3.5% in premarket trading after its adjusted earnings of 40 cents per share beat estimates by 7 cents and the cloud storage company’s revenue came in above forecasts as well.</p>\n<p><b>10)&nbsp;Cornerstone OnDemand(CSOD) </b>– Cornerstone agreed to be bought out by private equity firm Clearlake Capital Group. Clearlake will pay about $3.8 billion, or $57.50 per share in cash for the cloud computing firm. Cornerstone surged 13.3% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>11)&nbsp;Zynga(ZNGA) </b>– Zynga shares plunged 15.8% in the premarket after the mobile gaming company gave a disappointing full-year forecast, anticipating a slowdown in gaming. Zynga also reported adjusted quarterly earnings of 4 cents per share, 5 cents shy of estimates, with revenue below estimates as well.</p>\n<p><b>12)&nbsp;Carvana(CVNA) </b>– Carvana shares rallied 11.3% in premarket trading after the online used-car retailer posted an unexpected profit – its first ever - for its latest quarter. The company’s revenue also exceeded analyst forecasts by a wide margin. Auto sales, in general, have enjoyed a boom in demand since the pandemic began last year.</p>\n<p><b>13)&nbsp;Yelp(YELP)</b> – Yelp earned 5 cents per share for its latest quarter, compared with consensus forecasts for a 9 cents per share loss. The online review site operator also reported better-than-expected revenue and boosted its full-year forecast as ad revenue continues to strengthen. Shares surged 12.9% in premarket action.</p>\n<p><b>In FX,</b> the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was up 0.2%; the dollar rallied ahead of key U.S. jobs data that’s set to put a focus on the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook amid calls from officials to pare bond purchases. The greenback strengthened against all its G-10 peers, with the euro and the Norwegian krone among the biggest decliners. “A strong U.S. jobs number today should see the U.S. money market rates continue to work their way back to the highs seen in early July. This should support the dollar against the low- yielders of JPY and EUR,” said ING analysts including Chris Turner. Thursday’s release showing a second weekly drop in U.S. jobless claims stoked expectations for strong payrolls data and ignoring the huge ADP payrolls miss. Short-term accounts are carrying short AUD/USD positions into the report, according to FX traders. The Thai baht led losses among emerging markets currencies, emblematic of how a surge in coronavirus infections and deaths in some countries around the world is hitting confidence in their currencies and economies. Turkey's lira was down 0.8% in its fourth straight day of losses .</p>\n<p>“EUR/USD is dropping toward 1.18 as short-term U.S. rates creeps higher before NFP,” say Danske Bank analysts including Jens Naervig Pedersen. “An ongoing strengthening of the labor market combined with rising inflation as the CPI-numbers are published next week is significant for the monetary policy outlook as shown by the recent hawkish comments from Fed’s vice chairman Clarida regarding tapering and rate hikes”</p>\n<p><b>In rates, </b>treasuries traded heavy across long-end of the curve, with the bear steepening move extended following large block sale in ultra-long bond futures shortly after 6am ET. 10-Year Treasury yields rose u to around 1.255%, cheaper by 3.2bp on the day and underperforming bunds by 1.5bp; long-end led losses steepens 2s10s, 5s30s spread by 2.3bp and 1.6bp on the day.&nbsp; Pockets of selling also emerged during Asia session as futures drifted lower, leaving yields cheaper by up to 4bp across long-end ahead of 8:30am ET July jobs report.</p>\n<p><b>In commodities,</b> oil prices rose on Friday but were still set for their biggest weekly loss since October after falls earlier in the week triggered by rising COVID-19 cases and a surprise build in U.S. crude stockpiles. WTI crude was $69.99 a barrel, up 0.47%. Brent crude traded at $72.22 per barrel, up 1.29%. The stronger dollar and potential for higher yields hurt gold with the spot price down 0.41% at $1,796.52. But before the Department of Justice tries to break up companies likeGoogleorApple,it should recall the history, and eventual outcome, of theAT&amp;T-Time Warner merger.</p>\n<p>The DOJ expended extensive time and resources to stop AT&amp;T’s acquisition of Time Warner, marking the department’s first challenge to a major vertical merger in over 40 years. The government was unsuccessful despite its best efforts, which included an appeal to the D.C. Circuit, and time reveals that its concerns were evidently misplaced all along. The merger did not result in higher prices, program blackouts, or even any appreciable advantage for the companies.</p>\n<p>In October 2016 AT&amp;Tannouncedits plan to buy Time Warner.&nbsp; Donald Trump’s presidential campaign trashed the merger in a statement: &nbsp;“AT&amp;T … is now trying to buy Time Warner and thus the wildly anti-Trump CNN. Donald Trump would never approve such a deal.”&nbsp; With Trump in office, the DOJ moved to block it.</p>\n<p>In 2017, the DOJ went to court tocomplainthat the merger would “substantially lessen competition in video” by allowing AT&amp;T to “use Time Warner’s ‘must have’” networks like CNN, TNT, TBS, and HBO to raise fees charged to rival cable TV distributors like Comcast or DISH. AT&amp;T, which had acquired national satellite operator DirecTV, could threaten “blackouts” depriving rival distributors of key programs—their subscribers would then quit and flock to DirecTV (AT&amp;T) so as to keep watching CNN or the NBA Playoffs on TNT. Not only would major TV and cable systems be hurt, but emerging online streaming services would be crushed.</p>\n<p>The government’s case focused on “vertical leveraging,” where a company uses two complementary products to make it more difficult for rivals to compete in the individual markets.&nbsp;Here, AT&amp;T was combining video content creation with video program distribution; the allegation was that competitors in either segment might be hurt.&nbsp;Yet there are clear efficiencies to be had, as widely found in studies of vertically integrated firms, with joint operations boosting consumer happiness. Buyers at Costco eagerly snap up Costco-supplied Kirkland products—which the retailer stocks in place of those of some independent producers—if they improve price or quality.&nbsp;So facts, not just a story, are needed.&nbsp; District Court Judge Richard J. Leonfoundthat the DOJ case “falls far short of establishing the validity of its… theory.”</p>\n<p>Aside from the political overtones of the case, there was good historical reason to doubt the official complaint. A cable TV programmer combined with (or split from) a video distributor several times in recent years.&nbsp;Vertical integration did not cause higher prices, as shown by econometric analysis. Nor did vertical integration lead to “blackouts,” as the DOJ conceded. A three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit confirmed Judge Leon’s opinion, finding that “the industry had become dynamic in recent years with the emergence, for example, of Netflix and Hulu.”</p>\n<p>Owning DirecTV and Time Warner together turned out to be not much advantage, let alone a monopoly. Despite a huge boost in pandemic demand for video content, rivals soon dined on AT&amp;T-Time Warner’s lunch. When AT&amp;T bought DirecTV in 2015, it paid $67 billion.&nbsp;In February 2021, with DirecTV’s satellite subscriber base collapsing, the spun-off operation wasvaluedat $16.3 billion.</p>\n<p>And AT&amp;Tthen unloaded the video assets of Time Warner. A new enterprise—Warner Bros. Discovery—is being spun off and merged with Discovery (Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, HGTV, the Food Networkand more). The content-only firm voluntarily severs the link the DOJ critiqued as easy monopoly money. With the allegations of anticompetitive bundling, it has been cast off as not worth the trouble.AT&amp;T shareholders receive $43 billion, less than half the $100 billion AT&amp;T expended (in debt and equity) for Time Warner three years ago. The government’s scenario of anti-competitive vertical integration proved a fantasy.</p>\n<p>AT&amp;T’s maneuvers deserve whatever scorn billions in shareholder losses can buy. A cynic might offer that antitrust laws be beefed up to protect against such corporate errors, ignoring that economic penalties—more reliable and harsher than whatever antitrust enforcers might deal—are visibly in place. But little note has been made of the ironic political saga. Policymakers are moving full throttle to enact statutes to beef up antitrust prosecution in tech for exactly what AT&amp;T so spectacularly failed to do in video.&nbsp; Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas) introduced the “Ending Monopoly Platforms Act” that would restrict vertical mergers in online services, for example. At least five other bills for new antitrust rules have been introduced.</p>\n<p>Not only can such policies be expensive legal diversions, they can block the innovations igniting exciting new choices for customers. Netflix has integrated from streaming into movie production, after launching Roku. Hulu was created by News Corp. (Fox) and NBC-Universal (Comcast).&nbsp;Amazon Prime Video, Sling, YouTube TV, Apple TV, Disney Plus, HBO Max and Paramount Plus—each has extended a large media or e-commerce platform. Each evolved from a quest for better products. Treating entrepreneurship as suspect puts the screws to just the disruptions now roiling online entertainment markets. But before the Department of Justice tries to break up companies likeGoogleorApple,it should recall the history, and eventual outcome, of theAT&T-Time Warner merger.\nThe DOJ expended extensive time and resources to stop AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner, marking the department’s first challenge to a major vertical merger in over 40 years. The government was unsuccessful despite its best efforts, which included an appeal to the D.C. Circuit, and time reveals that its concerns were evidently misplaced all along. The merger did not result in higher prices, program blackouts, or even any appreciable advantage for the companies.\nIn October 2016 AT&Tannouncedits plan to buy Time Warner.  Donald Trump’s presidential campaign trashed the merger in a statement:  “AT&T … is now trying to buy Time Warner and thus the wildly anti-Trump CNN. Donald Trump would never approve such a deal.”  With Trump in office, the DOJ moved to block it.\nIn 2017, the DOJ went to court tocomplainthat the merger would “substantially lessen competition in video” by allowing AT&T to “use Time Warner’s ‘must have’” networks like CNN, TNT, TBS, and HBO to raise fees charged to rival cable TV distributors like Comcast or DISH. AT&T, which had acquired national satellite operator DirecTV, could threaten “blackouts” depriving rival distributors of key programs—their subscribers would then quit and flock to DirecTV (AT&T) so as to keep watching CNN or the NBA Playoffs on TNT. Not only would major TV and cable systems be hurt, but emerging online streaming services would be crushed.\nThe government’s case focused on “vertical leveraging,” where a company uses two complementary products to make it more difficult for rivals to compete in the individual markets. Here, AT&T was combining video content creation with video program distribution; the allegation was that competitors in either segment might be hurt. Yet there are clear efficiencies to be had, as widely found in studies of vertically integrated firms, with joint operations boosting consumer happiness. Buyers at Costco eagerly snap up Costco-supplied Kirkland products—which the retailer stocks in place of those of some independent producers—if they improve price or quality. So facts, not just a story, are needed.  District Court Judge Richard J. Leonfoundthat the DOJ case “falls far short of establishing the validity of its… theory.”\nAside from the political overtones of the case, there was good historical reason to doubt the official complaint. A cable TV programmer combined with (or split from) a video distributor several times in recent years. Vertical integration did not cause higher prices, as shown by econometric analysis. Nor did vertical integration lead to “blackouts,” as the DOJ conceded. A three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit confirmed Judge Leon’s opinion, finding that “the industry had become dynamic in recent years with the emergence, for example, of Netflix and Hulu.”\nOwning DirecTV and Time Warner together turned out to be not much advantage, let alone a monopoly. Despite a huge boost in pandemic demand for video content, rivals soon dined on AT&T-Time Warner’s lunch. When AT&T bought DirecTV in 2015, it paid $67 billion. In February 2021, with DirecTV’s satellite subscriber base collapsing, the spun-off operation wasvaluedat $16.3 billion.\nAnd AT&Tthen unloaded the video assets of Time Warner. A new enterprise—Warner Bros. Discovery—is being spun off and merged with Discovery (Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, HGTV, the Food Networkand more). The content-only firm voluntarily severs the link the DOJ critiqued as easy monopoly money. With the allegations of anticompetitive bundling, it has been cast off as not worth the trouble.AT&T shareholders receive $43 billion, less than half the $100 billion AT&T expended (in debt and equity) for Time Warner three years ago. The government’s scenario of anti-competitive vertical integration proved a fantasy.\nAT&T’s maneuvers deserve whatever scorn billions in shareholder losses can buy. A cynic might offer that antitrust laws be beefed up to protect against such corporate errors, ignoring that economic penalties—more reliable and harsher than whatever antitrust enforcers might deal—are visibly in place. But little note has been made of the ironic political saga. Policymakers are moving full throttle to enact statutes to beef up antitrust prosecution in tech for exactly what AT&T so spectacularly failed to do in video.  Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas) introduced the “Ending Monopoly Platforms Act” that would restrict vertical mergers in online services, for example. At least five other bills for new antitrust rules have been introduced.\nNot only can such policies be expensive legal diversions, they can block the innovations igniting exciting new choices for customers. Netflix has integrated from streaming into movie production, after launching Roku. Hulu was created by News Corp. (Fox) and NBC-Universal (Comcast). Amazon Prime Video, Sling, YouTube TV, Apple TV, Disney Plus, HBO Max and Paramount Plus—each has extended a large media or e-commerce platform. Each evolved from a quest for better products. Treating entrepreneurship as suspect puts the screws to just the disruptions now roiling online entertainment markets.
