If the German philosopher were alive today, he’d be posting that ","content":"
Karl Marx would have loved Reddit. If the German philosopher were alive today, he’d be posting that everyone should get in on trading meme stocks and cryptocurrency. Not to get rich—though that’s a nice side benefit—but to strike back at the investor class. “It’s worthwhile running some risk in order to relieve the enemy of his money,” Marxwrote. I’m right there with you, Karl.
\n
Working-class millennials have been denied the chance to build generational wealth over the course of our professional careers. Many of us are risking what little we have left as a way of raging against a machine we feel is rigged against us. And we’re following in Marx’s footsteps.
\n
After a friend died in 1864, Marx received £820 in a bequest, his biographerrecounts. That comes out to roughly $151,500 today after adjusting for inflation and applying current conversion rates. Marx used a portion of his inheritance to become a financial speculator, often engaging in the same sort of penny-stock bubble schemes that the notorious WallStreetBets sub-Reddit has been accused of engaging in this year. “[Stocks] are springing up like mushrooms this year,” Marx wrote in a letter to his uncle, bragging that he had already made £400 from speculation. He added that many of his investments were typically “forced up to quite an unreasonable level and then, for the most part, collapse.”
\n
Marx’s trading stories are difficult to substantiate, but millennials’ love of meme stocks is very real. I’ve already made more this year from trading meme stocks and cryptocurrency than I have as a professional writer. I’ve come to look at the meme stock boom as millennials’ chance to finally build wealth. But if not, we’re content with making the investors largely responsible for our financial woes feel a bit of the pain they’ve inflicted on us. Short-sellers are losing their shirts to the tune of$4.5 billionon meme stocks so far.
\n
As a 34-year-old American, almost every generational stereotype applies to me. HuffPost’s Michael Hobbessummed upmillennials’ financial situation best in 2017: “My rent consumes nearly half my income, I haven’t had a steady job since Pluto was a planet and my savings are dwindling faster than the ice caps the baby boomers melted.”
\n
Perhaps because we’re the only American generation to live through two major recessions and two wars in our coming-up years, we’re the first generation to be financially worse off than our parents, despite beingbetter educatedon average. We paid for it, too. A year of college that cost $10,000 for boomers set millennials back more than $15,000 on average in inflation-adjusted dollars, according toBloomberg. Millennials of color, particularly Black millennials, have it worse. They graduated witheven more student debtthan their white classmates, arefar less likelyto be hired in white-collar professions, and their households earnjust 60%of what their white coworkers make.
\n
Millennials’ high-priced educations haven’t bought us much job security. A 2018 Gallup studycalledmillennials the “job-hopping generation.” Maybe, but not by choice. A 2019University of Chicago studyfound millennials actually long for a stable career. It should come as little surprise, then, that a generation plagued with job insecurity and mounting debt is leading the“baby bust.”The birth rate is at its lowest inthree decades. There may not be enough working-age Americans to care for the nation’s swelling senior population. Boomers effectively climbed the class ladder, then took a saw and cut off the rungs below them. (And they still ask us when we’ll give them grandchildren!)
\n
If all that doesn’t make meme stocks and cryptocurrency more appealing, at least it might help explain why some of us just don’t care any more about playing it safe. I’ll be the first to admit that investing in meme stocks isn’t a sustainable way to build wealth. A lot more of us will get hurt than get rich. But I’m not primarily investing to make money: I want the investors who crashed the economy and got bailed out in my senior year of college—thustorpedoingmy career earning potential—to feel at least a little bit of the hardship they put my generation through. And given thepredominantly millennialcomposition of /r/WallStreetBets, I know I’m not the only rage-driven investor.
\n
There’s plenty to be mad about. Like we saw withGameStop, workers organizing to make the stock market pay out in our favor results in strict blowback. After Redditors speculated GameStop shares through the roof in late January, mobile trading app Robinhood not only restricted trading, but evenreportedlysold investors’ GameStop shares without their consent. (Robinhooddeniesforced-selling occurred.) When it came to light that Robinhood had afinancial relationshipwith firms that help route its customers’ orders, it made a lot of newbie investors like me even more jaded about the markets.
\n
In March, when New York City opened movie theaters, I decided to buy AMC shares on a lark for $7 apiece. As of early June, my investment has appreciated in value by more than 550%. That could evaporate, but I’m taking a lesson from GameStop. Its stock is still trading at more than $250 per share despite starting the year under $20. I plan on continuing to hold my AMC shares in hopes the value will increase even more. When it’s finally time, I’ll sell half and re-invest my profits in cryptocurrency.
\n
When that happens, I’ll be far from the only millennial betting big on crypto. According to Business Insider, my generation ischiefly responsiblefor the sudden rise of cryptocurrency in 2021, in which both blue-chip digital currencies like Ethereum, as well as joke cryptocurrencies like Dogecoin, are thriving. Ethereum’s price has gone from $730.97 per coin on Jan. 1 to a peak of over $4,000 in May. Dogecoin hasappreciatedby more than 21,000% since its inception as a meme in 2013. (I’m still kicking myself for selling my Dogecoin when it was trading for less than 10 cents, even though I still made thousands in profit). Millennials’ commitment to crypto is now forcing the giants to play along: In March,Morgan Stanleybecame thefirst bankto offer Bitcoin funds to its wealthy clients. And as if on cue, now that the workers have made a little money in the rigged casino, U.S. regulators are reportedly preparing a “crackdown” on cryptocurrency.
\n
Millennials went through childhood being told we had to work hard to have financial security. Then we were told we had to shackle ourselves with debt to get a college degree that would get us a good job. Then we were told that only a lucky few actually build wealth from their jobs and that to have true financial success, we should invest. And then when we invested, we were told we were doing it wrong. I get the message. Millennials aren’t meant to win. Financial security isn’t for us. So if we can make a few grand by speculating penny stocks to the moon and hurt a few smug hedge fund vultures in the process, we’ll settle for that.
\n
Corrections & Amplifications: Citadel Securities is a market-maker that provides services for Robinhood, not a hedge fund. I’m right there with you, Karl.\nWorking-class millennials have been denied the chance to build generational wealth over the course of our professional careers. Many of us are risking what little we have left as a way of raging against a machine we feel is rigged against us. And we’re following in Marx’s footsteps.\nAfter a friend died in 1864, Marx received £820 in a bequest, his biographerrecounts. He added that many of his investments were typically “forced up to quite an unreasonable level and then, for the most part, collapse.”\nMarx’s trading stories are difficult to substantiate, but millennials’ love of meme stocks is very real. On last Wednesday, its shares skyrocketed another 95.6% after the company announced it would launch an exclusive web platform for retail investors. Shareholders would receive many perks, including free popcorn, exclusive new screenings, and the chance to speak with CEO Adam Aron.

Enthusiasm about AMC's turnaround prospects have sent its shares soaring more than 400% in the past month and 2,100% year to date. Is the stock a safe investment right now?

What's behind the hype?

During the first quarter of 2021, AMC operated 585 of its domestic theaters at just 15% to 60% capacity, while only 27% of its 133 international ones stayed partly open. People steered clear of packed indoor movie screenings with the coronavirus pandemic still going strong, but that's less of a risk as more of the U.S. population has been vaccinated.

Hence, investors are betting that AMC's revenue and earnings will experience a massive rebound starting in the second quarter. In 2019, the company generated $5.42 billion from ticket, concessions (food and beverage), and entertainment sales and posted a free cash flow of $84 million.

But there's more. The pandemic also led to extended production delays, as social distancing can be difficult on a movie set. Many producers also did not want to release completed films in a purely digital format and miss out on lucrative box office revenue.

There is now a massive backlog of new films from blockbuster franchise properties such as Avatar, Dungeons & Dragons, Ghostbusters, Halloween, Kingsman, The Matrix, Minecraft, Mission: Impossible, and Tomb Raider, as well as several new offerings from the comic book universes of DC and Marvel. They are all scheduled to be released by the end of 2022.

The schedule is so packed that prominent films like Black Widow and Cinderella are set to hit theaters within two weeks of one another in July. Given its sheer size, AMC might even see its box office revenue hit record highs in 2022.

Can you count on AMC?

Generally speaking, most investors tend to buy on emotion and justify with reason. Now is probably time to look at the latter. When the stock was trading for just $12 last month, it looked pretty undervalued.

However, things have changed as AMC's market cap has surged to nearly $25 billion. To put things into perspective, the company's market cap was less than one-fifth of that amount in 2016, before streaming services like Netflix gained momentum and took away some of its market share.

What's more, AMC has $5.4 billion in long-term debt and owes $4.9 billion per year in theater rent. Even in its heyday, the company operated at razor-thin margins. Now its balance sheet looks even worse as liabilities outpace its assets by over $2 billion. For these reasons, it's probably a good time to take profits on the stock and consolidate gains.

But watch for its next move

Based on the poor fundamentals (and experience with market bubbles), it can be very tempting to see the recent rally as nothing more than a pump-and-dump scheme or a total scam. But there is something that even prudent investors are missing.

With a $25 billion market cap, AMC only has to issue 22% more shares to raise cash to pay off its entire debt balance. That's right: The company has the potential to do a \"soft reset\" and start afresh. The returns would be immediate, as after closing, it would no longer have to pay $151.5 million per quarter in interest. In the first quarter of 2021, the company's interest expense outweighed its total revenue.

Not only would its profit margins increase, but it could also use new cash to increase its theater count, upgrade its recliner seats and big screens, introduce dine-in restaurants at its locations, and more. Since there is still a lot of demand from retail investors at these levels, I don't think it would have trouble finding buyers for the offering, either.

In fact, the company did just that on June 3. AMC sold 11.5 million shares of stock hours after announcing the offering, raising $587.4 million in much-needed cash. The stock fell by more than 30% from the previous day's close before recovering. Investors should continue to expect further dilutions ahead, as the new capital is still not enough for a soft reset of its liabilities.

Overall, AMC stock is very overvalued at these levels. But thanks to the help of 10.3 million traders/followers/influencers of WallStreetBets, the company now has the option to refinance or eliminate its crippling liabilities. If the share price comes down to something more reasonable (say, $20), I'd definitely give the new AMC a chance. On last Wednesday, its shares skyrocketed another 95.6% after the company announced it would launch an exclusive web platform for retail investors. Shareholders would receive many perks, including free popcorn, exclusive new screenings, and the chance to speak with CEO Adam Aron.Enthusiasm about AMC's turnaround prospects have sent its shares soaring more than 400% in the past month and 2,100% year to date. Is the stock a safe investment right now?Image source: Getty Images. What's behind the hype?During the first quarter of 2021, AMC operated 585 of its domestic theaters at just 15% to 60% capacity, while only 27% of its 133 international ones stayed partly open. People steered clear of packed indoor movie screenings with the coronavirus pandemic still going strong, but that's less of a risk as more of the U.S. population has been vaccinated.Hence, investors are betting that AMC's revenue and earnings will experience a massive rebound starting in the second quarter. A CNBC PRO analysis found that on average, Reddit stocks' runs lasted nine trading days from the start to their first big drop during the initial frenzy at the beginning of 2021.\nCNBC identified the starting point for five stocks popular on message boards earlier this year — GameStop, AMC,Bed Bath & Beyond,BlackBerryandKoss— by finding the first time each stocks' single-day trading volume at least doubled its 30-day moving average of shares traded. That typically represents the point at which a flurry of new investors took interest in a stock that was not being heavily traded.\nOn Thursday, GameStop investors seemed to be running for the exits afterthe company said it appointed former Amazon executive Matt Furlong as its new CEO.It also picked another Amazon veteran, Mike Recupero, as chief financial officer. There's a good chance the public may never know which charity or charities benefited from the approximately $5.7 billion in Tesla $(TSLA)$ stock Musk donated in 2021.

While there are some public-disclosure laws in philanthropy, billionaire donors like Musk can easily keep the details of their giving under wraps, and it's legal for them to do so.

Musk -- who signed the Giving Pledge in 2012, promising to give away most of his wealth -- doesn't send out press releases announcing his donations, though he occasionally tweets about them. Tesla doesn't typically respond to press inquiries (it did not for this story), and there's no contact information listed on Musk's foundation's bare-bones website. The Tesla stock donation was revealed in an SEC filing Monday that described the donated shares as a gift "to charity," but didn't specify which one.

One possible candidate is the United Nations World Food Program. Musk got into a public Twitter spat with the WFP shortly before he donated the stock, and said he would donate $6 billion to the hunger relief agency if it could show how the money would "solve world hunger." A WFP spokesman initially told MarketWatch this week that it doesn't disclose donors, but allows donors to publicize their gifts themselves. The WFP's executive director later said that the group had not received any funds yet from Musk, and added that "I am excited to hear that Elon is engaged. This is an amazing and great first step."

At a time when billionaires are riding high and exerting growing influence over the public sphere, the lack of transparency around Musk's donation is the latest example of how elite philanthropists can evade scrutiny too easily, critics say.

"Come on. There has to be a middle-ground [between] preening, self-congratulatory mega-giving & complete non-disclosure," wrote philanthropy historian Ben Soskis on Twitter(TWTR) in response to the lack of information on Musk's stock donation. "If not, we're gonna need a pretty radical overhaul of our [regulations] relating to individual giving & anonymity."

Soskis, a senior research associate in the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute, added, "If you are giving a gift of over $5 [billion], you should publicly announce where the money is going to. As a fundamental matter of public interest."

How the public could find out where Musk's donation went

The recipients of Musk's donation could eventually come to light if Musk gave the stock to his private foundation and the foundation liquidated it and handed out the money as grants to nonprofits. In that case, the Musk Foundation would have to publicly list its major donors and the nonprofits that received the grants in a filing with the IRS. Foundations, which exist to hand out money for public benefit, are required to file that paperwork annually.

The most recent IRS filing for the Musk Foundation shows that Musk donated 11,000 Tesla shares to it in 2019. The foundation gave a $1 million grant to George Mason University "for COVID-19 scientific research," made several other grants to schools and other recipients, and gave a $20.7 million donation to Fidelity Charitable, where Musk appears to keep a donor-advised fund.

Why the recipients of Musk stock donation could easily stay secret

There are several other scenarios where the recipients of Musk's largesse would never be revealed. Musk may have put the money into a donor-advised fund at Fidelity Charitable. DAFs, a type of charitable giving account, function as middlemen. They hold money the donor has earmarked for charity and then distribute it to nonprofits chosen by the donor. When the nonprofits receive the money, it comes from the DAF, not the donor, and there's no paper trail connecting the donor directly to the nonprofit.

DAFs have come under fire because account holders get a tax break when they put money into a DAF, but there's no deadline for when donors must distribute the money to charities. A bill recently introduced in Congress would change some of the laws around DAFs with the aim of moving money more quickly into the hands of charities.

"The Musk donation serves as a reminder that current laws allow for donors to get a tax deduction up front without any requirement that $ ever gets to the community," wrote billionaire John Arnold, a supporter of the DAF reform legislation, on Twitter. "Money can sit in DAF accounts forever."

DAF providers say those criticisms are wrong. Fidelity Charitable released its 2022 giving report Tuesday, which showed that in 2021, its DAF account holders recommended "a record $10.3 billion in grants, 41% more dollars than pre-pandemic giving in 2019." The report also noted that "donors are recommending grants at a more rapid pace -- an average of 12.4 grants per account in 2021, compared to 7.4 a decade ago."

A spokesman for Fidelity Charitable declined to comment on Musk.

Musk could also fly under the radar with his stock donation if he put it into a charitable limited liability company, a type of giving vehicle used by philanthropists such as Meta (formerly Facebook $(FB)$) CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, and Melinda French Gates, the former wife of Microsoft $(MSFT)$ founder Bill Gates. Charitable LLCs can make grants to nonprofits and invest in for-profit ventures, but they aren't required to publicly disclose their spending.

If Musk gave the stock directly to a nonprofit, the group wouldn't be required to publicly disclose him as the donor. Nonprofits must disclose their major donors to the IRS, but they are not required to identify those donors publicly, said Gene Takagi, a lawyer specializing in nonprofit law at NEO Law Group in San Francisco.

"There are debates over the need for greater transparency, particularly with very large gifts that can shift public policy and possibly elections through permissible charity advocacy activities," Takagi siad. " In my own personal opinion, the danger of less transparency, for example in the area of campaign finance, could seriously weaken our democracy."

Others say that donors should be allowed to preserve their privacy. Keeping donor information private "enables potentially controversial or less popular causes to receive financial support from individuals without posing a public risk to donors," wrote Independent Sector, a coalition of nonprofits and foundations. Organizations shouldn't have to disclose their donors if they're involved in "issues for which donor disclosure would create a substantial likelihood of personal harm to donors," the group said.

Other billionaires have been more public about recent giving

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon $(AMZN)$ founder Jeff Bezos, drew criticism in December when she announced that she had made a round of donations, but didn't want to reveal the amounts she gave or the recipients. She later changed her tune and said she'll be putting together a public database showing who's received the more than $8.5 billion she's handed out since her divorce from Bezos. Some of the organizations that have received money from Scott have also gone public.

Another SEC filing made public this week showed that Henrik Fisker, chief executive and chairman of electric-vehicle maker Fisker, Inc. $(FSR)$ donated $4 million in stock to establish a foundation in the name of him and his wife, and directed $1.9 million to a donor-advised fund. Fisker, Inc. also issued a news release outlining where the money was going.

In another recent SEC filing, Austin Russell, chief executive of self-driving software company Luminar Technologies $(LAZR)$ and considered the world's youngest self-made billionaire, disclosed that he donated 4,500,000 shares of Luminar to Central Florida Foundation, an Orlando-based community foundation. The foundation announced the $70 million gift in a press release, and the Orlando Sentinel covered the gift

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Elon Musk's $5.7 Billion Secret -- Why We May Never Find out Who Benefited from His Tesla Stock Donation
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nElon Musk's $5.7 Billion Secret -- Why We May Never Find out Who Benefited from His Tesla Stock Donation\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2022-02-18 16:52
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Publicly announcing multi-billion-dollar gifts is a 'fundamental matter of public interest,' says one observer.

Elon Musk will happily broadcast a few choice words about U.S. senators, but he's quieter when it comes to his philanthropy. There's a good chance the public may never know which charity or charities benefited from the approximately $5.7 billion in Tesla $(TSLA)$ stock Musk donated in 2021.While there are some public-disclosure laws in philanthropy, billionaire donors like Musk can easily keep the details of their giving under wraps, and it's legal for them to do so.Musk -- who signed the Giving Pledge in 2012, promising to give away most of his wealth -- doesn't send out press releases announcing his donations, though he occasionally tweets about them. Tesla doesn't typically respond to press inquiries (it did not for this story), and there's no contact information listed on Musk's foundation's bare-bones website. The Tesla stock donation was revealed in an SEC filing Monday that described the donated shares as a gift \"to charity,\" but didn't specify which one.One possible candidate is the United Nations World Food Program. Musk got into a public Twitter spat with the WFP shortly before he donated the stock, and said he would donate $6 billion to the hunger relief agency if it could show how the money would \"solve world hunger.\" A WFP spokesman initially told MarketWatch this week that it doesn't disclose donors, but allows donors to publicize their gifts themselves. The WFP's executive director later said that the group had not received any funds yet from Musk, and added that \"I am excited to hear that Elon is engaged. This is an amazing and great first step.\"At a time when billionaires are riding high and exerting growing influence over the public sphere, the lack of transparency around Musk's donation is the latest example of how elite philanthropists can evade scrutiny too easily, critics say.\"Come on. There has to be a middle-ground [between] preening, self-congratulatory mega-giving & complete non-disclosure,\" wrote philanthropy historian Ben Soskis on Twitter(TWTR) in response to the lack of information on Musk's stock donation. \"If not, we're gonna need a pretty radical overhaul of our [regulations] relating to individual giving & anonymity.\"Soskis, a senior research associate in the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute, added, \"If you are giving a gift of over $5 [billion], you should publicly announce where the money is going to. As a fundamental matter of public interest.\"How the public could find out where Musk's donation wentThe recipients of Musk's donation could eventually come to light if Musk gave the stock to his private foundation and the foundation liquidated it and handed out the money as grants to nonprofits. The foundation gave a $1 million grant to George Mason University \"for COVID-19 scientific research,\" made several other grants to schools and other recipients, and gave a $20.7 million donation to Fidelity Charitable, where Musk appears to keep a donor-advised fund. Why the recipients of Musk stock donation could easily stay secretThere are several other scenarios where the recipients of Musk's largesse would never be revealed. Musk may have put the money into a donor-advised fund at Fidelity Charitable. DAFs, a type of charitable giving account, function as middlemen. They hold money the donor has earmarked for charity and then distribute it to nonprofits chosen by the donor. When the nonprofits receive the money, it comes from the DAF, not the donor, and there's no paper trail connecting the donor directly to the nonprofit.DAFs have come under fire because account holders get a tax break when they put money into a DAF, but there's no deadline for when donors must distribute the money to charities. A bill recently introduced in Congress would change some of the laws around DAFs with the aim of moving money more quickly into the hands of charities.\"The Musk donation serves as a reminder that current laws allow for donors to get a tax deduction up front without any requirement that $ ever gets to the community,\" wrote billionaire John Arnold, a supporter of the DAF reform legislation, on Twitter. \"Money can sit in DAF accounts forever.\"DAF providers say those criticisms are wrong. Fidelity Charitable released its 2022 giving report Tuesday, which showed that in 2021, its DAF account holders recommended \"a record $10.3 billion in grants, 41% more dollars than pre-pandemic giving in 2019.\" The report also noted that \"donors are recommending grants at a more rapid pace -- an average of 12.4 grants per account in 2021, compared to 7.4 a decade ago.\"A spokesman for Fidelity Charitable declined to comment on Musk.Musk could also fly under the radar with his stock donation if he put it into a charitable limited liability company, a type of giving vehicle used by philanthropists such as Meta (formerly Facebook $(FB)$) CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, and Melinda French Gates, the former wife of Microsoft $(MSFT)$ founder Bill Gates. Charitable LLCs can make grants to nonprofits and invest in for-profit ventures, but they aren't required to publicly disclose their spending. If Musk gave the stock directly to a nonprofit, the group wouldn't be required to publicly disclose him as the donor. If you are new to either or haven't delved into the mechanics of short-selling, it's important to understand how this type of high-stakes trading can influence stock prices, even if you have no intention of doing it yourself.
\n
Shorting a stock is one of the riskiest things you can do as an investor. But the meme-stock craze -- essentially playing the other side of short trades -- can be nearly as risky because of the wild swings in share prices.
\n
First, some definitions. In this article, investing means buying something and holding it, hoping that it goes up in value, that it provides income or both. Trading is buying and selling frequently to book gains.
\n
If you buy a stock, you have only risked the amount you invested. The stock can go to zero and you can lose 100% of the money you invested.
\n
If you short-sell a stock, you are betting that the price will go down and there is no limit on your potential losses if the share price rises unexpectedly. This is not to say your loss potential is unlimited -- your broker will limit your losses by demanding more collateral to ensure you can cover those losses.
\n
The mechanics of shorting a stock
\n
Short-selling a stock is when you borrow shares of a company and sell them immediately because you expect the price to drop, after which you can repurchase the shares, return them to the lender and pocket the difference. It is a specialized strategy for some professional investors and traders but for individuals, it can be very risky and for more than one reason.
\n
Some professionals have profited from highly publicized bets against companies they felt were in poor financial condition. Some have even alleged that corporate management teams have misled investors through inflated claims about their products or services.
\n
For example, shortseller Hindenburg Research's claims that Lordstown Motors had overstated the success of internal efforts to develop battery and fuel-cell capacity for electric trucks helped lead to a federal indictment against its founder, Trevor Milton, and the stock plunged.
\n
The above definition of short-selling is simple, but the devil is in the details, which will follow after some more definitions:
\n
Having a long position in a stock means you own the shares and expect (or hope) they go up in price.
\n
Covering is when someone with a short position buys back the shares, to end the short trade and return them to the seller. The short-seller hopes to cover after the share price declines and book a profit. But the short-seller may also cover to limit losses if the price has gone up.
\n
Margin is the amount of money an investor (or trader) has borrowed from their broker. You can set up a margin account with your broker to buy shares essentially on credit as well as to short a stock, in both cases with a limit set by the broker. If you are betting that the stock price will go down but it instead goes up, you may need to put up more collateral to maintain the agreed-upon margin. Otherwise the broker will begin selling your securities.
\n
This brings us to our final definition: A short squeeze takes place when many investors looking to cover short positions start buying a stock at the same time. The resulting feeding frenzy pushes the share price higher, compelling more traders with short positions to cover, and so on. This can happen to any trader, and if you have a large portion of your risk concentrated in one short position, you can lose your shirt.
\n
Shorting is best left to the professionals
\n
One reason why the deck is stacked against an individual short-seller is that they cannot mitigate their risk by offsetting a large number of short positions with a large number of long positions.
\n
A professional short-seller might have dozens of long positions offsetting a large number of short positions -- both based on their own extensive research. They expect to get some trades wrong, but with the risk spread out, as well as their own triggers for when to cover, the overall risk to the pro manager from any one short squeeze may be relatively small.
\n
And if you short a stock, there is the risk of a slow (or fast) bleed as you wait for a stock to go down enough for you to make your desired profit. For example, at one point in August 2021, shares of electric vehicle manufacturer Workhorse Group were 35.81% sold-short according to FactSet.
\n
At that time, it cost 6% annually to borrow shares of Workhorse from a broker, according to one portfolio manager. That may not seem to be very much, but if that stock had gone up after you shorted it say, 14%, then you would be paying 20% a year for the privilege of making a risky trade.
\n
Trying to time short-squeezes -- the meme-stock craze
\n
Let's turn to a real example of short-selling and short squeezes. Professional traders had been shorting shares of videogame retailer GameStop and cinema operator AMC Entertainment because they didn't think the businesses had much of a future. But shares of both shot up in early 2021 because of short squeezes, which some traders posting in Reddit's WallStreetBets channel portrayed as a class struggle against hedge funds that had shorted the stocks. These so-called meme stocks have remained well above their pre-short-squeeze levels.
\n
Short interest in GameStop was higher than 100% through most of January, according to data provided by FactSet. Short interest in AMC Entertainment reached 57.81%.
\n
Pros consider short interest above 30% to 40% to be dangerously high. Not only do high short percentages make it very expensive to borrow the shares but they create hair triggers for short squeezes. And that's what happened, with shares of both GameStop and AMC Entertainment going on roller-coaster rides.
\n
To be sure, the squeezes worked for traders who got in and out at the right times. It wasn't so neat for others. This chart shows GameStop's stock price for the first eight months of 2021.
\n
FACTSET
\n
The share of short interest for both stocks has since fallen sharply, making another short squeeze far less likely. The business prospects for both continue to look poor, especially relative to the broader stock market. Then again, both companies have taken advantage of the new interest among traders by issuing more shares to raise cash that could enable them to transform their businesses into healthier models.
\n
The bottom line is that shorting individual stocks can be very risky. If you cut this risk by shorting many stocks for particular reasons while offsetting those shorts with long positions and monitoring all positions continually, you won't have time for much else -- you will be a professional trader.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Short-selling stocks -- and trying to play short squeezes -- can be very dangerous
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nShort-selling stocks -- and trying to play short squeezes -- can be very dangerous\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-16 15:34 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
How this type of high-stakes trading can influence stock prices\nIt's easy to follow and online trading fad using your phone - and just as easy to lose a lot of money.\nInvesting and trading are two ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"GME":"游戏驿站","AMC":"AMC院线",".DJI":"道琼斯","WKHS":"Workhorse Group, Inc.",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index"},"source_url":"https://www.marketwatch.com/story/short-selling-stocks-and-trying-to-play-short-squeezes-can-be-very-dangerous-11631716710?mod=home-page","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2167599164","content_text":"How this type of high-stakes trading can influence stock prices\nIt's easy to follow and online trading fad using your phone - and just as easy to lose a lot of money.\nInvesting and trading are two completely different activities.
