They will transport workers to and from Shell's Energy and Chemicals Park on Pulau Bukom, replacing the diesel-powered ferries currently used.\nShell would not say how much the project costs, but a Nikkei news article on a recent proposed Thai project using ferries of a similar size cited a price tag of nearly S$2 million per vessel - or about two-thirds costlier than a diesel equivalent.\nThe Shell ferries are powered by a lithium-ion battery system with a capacity of 1.2MWh. They can attain a speed of over 20 knots (37kmh) with zero on-site emission and almost no audible noise.\nWhen berthed at Shell Bukom, the ferries will be charged via a combination of fast charging during peak hours, and slow charging during off-peak hours and overnight.\n\nAn artist's impression of the Shell Bukom electric ferry. In particular, services that offer online transactions saw a significant boost, which is why&nbsp;<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WISH\">ContextLogic Inc.</a></b> stock is so perplexing.</p>\n<p>Rather than screaming higher, WISH stock is down 62% for the year.</p>\n<p>An e-commerce platform that facilitates sales between individual buyers and sellers, ContextLogic in theory should enjoy robust user growth and engagement. Since the start of the pandemic,&nbsp;online sales as a percentage of total retail transactions&nbsp;averaged approximately 13.6% on a quarterly basis since the first three months of 2020.</p>\n<p>Right there, that should be a reason to acquire WISH stock.</p>\n<p>For context, in the fourth quarter of 2019, the above metric measured “only” 11.4%. Put another way, e-commerce has been a burgeoning segment since the advent of the internet. But the pandemic lit a fire under online merchant places. So, why the disappointment in WISH stock?</p>\n<p>As my<i>InvestorPlace</i>colleague Muslim Farooque stated – and rather bluntly, I might add – ContextLogic suffered a&nbsp;disastrous outing for its Q2 2021 earnings report.</p>\n<p>Specifically, he wrote that:</p>\n<blockquote>\n Long-term growth drivers are in place, but its troubling fundamentals and business risks have me concerned about the stock’s potential. There’s no sugarcoating this: ContextLogic’s second-quarter earnings card was bad. Its revenues fell 6% on ayear-over-year basis to $656 million, missing over $60 million estimates.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, Farooque added that “Its net loss increased&nbsp;from $11 million to $111 million&nbsp;and missed estimates by considerable margins.”</p>\n<p>In my opinion, the glaring vulnerability is that “the company’s monthly active users (MAUs) dropped 22% from the prior-year period to $90 million in the quarter. Quarterly active buyers tanked 44% to 17 million as well.”</p>\n<p><b>Trying to Explain Things Makes WISH Stock Look Worse</b></p>\n<p>Of course, everything nowadays revolves around the pandemic. Although ContextLogic’s business may have benefited from the initial volley of infections, the gradual acclimatization to the new normal apparently placed pressure on WISH stock.</p>\n<p>That’s not my take but rather the company’s leadership team. According to ContextLogic’s Form 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, management&nbsp;explained the reduction in active users and engagement&nbsp;as follows:</p>\n<blockquote>\n MAUs decreased approximately 22% and 16% from the three and six months ended June 30, 2020 to the three and six months ended June 30, 2021, respectively, which we believe was primarily driven by a decrease in overall mobile usage as stay-at-home restrictions eased around the world and lower marketing efficiency as the costs to advertise on key digital platforms increased.\n</blockquote>\n<p>I grabbed the above quote from page 21 if you’d like to follow along. On the surface, this sounds like a reasonable explanation. But just a few paragraphs earlier, ContextLogic explains that its “model relies on cost-effectively adding new users, converting those users into buyers and improving engagement and monetization of those buyers on Wish over time as well as adding new merchants, delivering economic success for those merchants, and having those merchants use more of our end-to-end platform.”</p>\n<p>To me, this sounds like an admission that the company’s core business model isn’t working. Naturally, this will raise concerns about the upcoming Q3 earnings report. Additionally, ContextLogic really ought to be improving sales, not going backward.</p>\n<p>Yes, I understand that the comparison to Q2 2020 isn’t favorable because 2021 is the year of initiating the recovery. But so what? A return to normal implies that our economic circumstances will normalize as well. Therefore, why would that be a negative for WISH stock? It really should be a positive.</p>\n<p><b>Don’t Take the Trap of Low Expectations</b></p>\n<p>My colleague is concerned about how ContextLogic will fare in the next quarterly report and I’m right there with him. I concede that the company now has to compete with the brick and mortars for users but again, so what? E-commerce overall has been a thorn on physical retailers’ side for decades.</p>\n<p>And it’s not like the industry of people buying stuff from each other online is about to fade into irrelevance. No, if anything, it’s only getting<i>more</i>relevant. That being the case, ContextLogic’s poor earnings report seems to suggest that without a gun to customers’ heads – the gun being the coronavirus in this analogy – they will gravitate toward superior alternatives.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s not all bad news. ContextLogic plies its trade in a viable ecosystem which entails that the company has an execution problem. Those challenges are easier resolved than being in the wrong industry altogether. In particular, services that offer online transactions saw a significant boost, which is why ContextLogic Inc. stock is so perplexing.\nRather than screaming higher, WISH stock is down 62% for the year.\nAn e-commerce platform that facilitates sales between individual buyers and sellers, ContextLogic in theory should enjoy robust user growth and engagement. Since the start of the pandemic, online sales as a percentage of total retail transactions averaged approximately 13.6% on a quarterly basis since the first three months of 2020.\nRight there, that should be a reason to acquire WISH stock.\nFor context, in the fourth quarter of 2019, the above metric measured “only” 11.4%. Put another way, e-commerce has been a burgeoning segment since the advent of the internet. But the pandemic lit a fire under online merchant places. So, why the disappointment in WISH stock?\nAs myInvestorPlacecolleague Muslim Farooque stated – and rather bluntly, I might add – ContextLogic suffered a disastrous outing for its Q2 2021 earnings report.\nSpecifically, he wrote that:\n\n Long-term growth drivers are in place, but its troubling fundamentals and business risks have me concerned about the stock’s potential. There’s no sugarcoating this: ContextLogic’s second-quarter earnings card was bad. Its revenues fell 6% on ayear-over-year basis to $656 million, missing over $60 million estimates.\n\nAdditionally, Farooque added that “Its net loss increased from $11 million to $111 million and missed estimates by considerable margins.”\nIn my opinion, the glaring vulnerability is that “the company’s monthly active users (MAUs) dropped 22% from the prior-year period to $90 million in the quarter. Quarterly active buyers tanked 44% to 17 million as well.”\nTrying to Explain Things Makes WISH Stock Look Worse\nOf course, everything nowadays revolves around the pandemic. Although ContextLogic’s business may have benefited from the initial volley of infections, the gradual acclimatization to the new normal apparently placed pressure on WISH stock.\nThat’s not my take but rather the company’s leadership team. According to ContextLogic’s Form 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, management explained the reduction in active users and engagement as follows:\n\n MAUs decreased approximately 22% and 16% from the three and six months ended June 30, 2020 to the three and six months ended June 30, 2021, respectively, which we believe was primarily driven by a decrease in overall mobile usage as stay-at-home restrictions eased around the world and lower marketing efficiency as the costs to advertise on key digital platforms increased.\n\nI grabbed the above quote from page 21 if you’d like to follow along. On the surface, this sounds like a reasonable explanation. But just a few paragraphs earlier, ContextLogic explains that its “model relies on cost-effectively adding new users, converting those users into buyers and improving engagement and monetization of those buyers on Wish over time as well as adding new merchants, delivering economic success for those merchants, and having those merchants use more of our end-to-end platform.”\nTo me, this sounds like an admission that the company’s core business model isn’t working. Naturally, this will raise concerns about the upcoming Q3 earnings report. Additionally, ContextLogic really ought to be improving sales, not going backward.\nYes, I understand that the comparison to Q2 2020 isn’t favorable because 2021 is the year of initiating the recovery. But so what? A return to normal implies that our economic circumstances will normalize as well. Therefore, why would that be a negative for WISH stock? It really should be a positive.\nDon’t Take the Trap of Low Expectations\nMy colleague is concerned about how ContextLogic will fare in the next quarterly report and I’m right there with him. I concede that the company now has to compete with the brick and mortars for users but again, so what? E-commerce overall has been a thorn on physical retailers’ side for decades.\nAnd it’s not like the industry of people buying stuff from each other online is about to fade into irrelevance. No, if anything, it’s only gettingmorerelevant. That being the case, ContextLogic’s poor earnings report seems to suggest that without a gun to customers’ heads – the gun being the coronavirus in this analogy – they will gravitate toward superior alternatives.\nNow, it’s not all bad news. ContextLogic plies its trade in a viable ecosystem which entails that the company has an execution problem. Those challenges are easier resolved than being in the wrong industry altogether. More content is shifting to streaming from linear TV</b></p>\n<p>More and more consumers are switching from linear TV connections to streaming content. Still, there is a long way to go before the transition runs its course. One estimate suggests in 18- to 45-year-olds, only 39% of their TV watching is streaming, highlighting that there is plenty of room for the shift to continue.</p>\n<p><b>2. Roku has a great operating system that customers love</b></p>\n<p>Roku enables this transition by selling hardware (streaming players) that connects TVs to its operating system. Additionally, it works with manufacturers to have its operating system built into TVs. Indeed, Roku is the leading operating system in TVs in the U.S. and Canada, and it's making good progress in Brazil and Mexico. Roku's system is proven to be reliable and reduces costs for manufacturers. Those features have helped Roku attract 55.1 million active accounts, up 28% from last year; a figure that is likely to grow as Roku continues its international expansion.</p>\n<p><b>3. Roku is expanding internationally</b></p>\n<p>The next market Roku will enter is Germany later this year. If Roku can match the success it's achieving in existing markets -- and there is no reason to think it won't -- it can continue to attract new customers. Indeed, the plan from management on international expansion is to keep doing more of the same, since it's working so well. During the&nbsp;second-quarter earnings call&nbsp;earlier this month, founder and CEO Anthony Wood commented:</p>\n<blockquote>\n In terms of growing active accounts globally, the strategy we're using is the same that worked for us well in the U.S., which is to focus on building active accounts, well, in terms of our business model internationally, it's to focus on building active accounts, engaging those users and then monetizing those users. And the way we are building active accounts is through selling our streaming players and licensing our operating system to TV manufacturers and coming to market with Roku TVs. Both of those are working well for us.\n</blockquote>\n<p><b>A concern? Roku's valuation is not cheap</b></p>\n<p>The one reason to be hesitant about Roku stock right now is that it isn't cheap, despite falling in value by 25% in the last month. It's trading at a forward price-to-sales ratio of 16.73, down from nearly 25 earlier in the year. To be sure, Roku has excellent long-run prospects. However, that might already be priced into the stock at this price. Furthermore, the company has challenges in the near term, such as the negative effects of economic reopenings and&nbsp;supply chain issues, which are causing shortages in materials and harming profit margins.</p>\n<p>All things considered, it may be prudent for investors to wait for an additional&nbsp;pullback&nbsp;in the stock price before accumulating shares in Roku. The sheer number of people who use Visa credit cards demonstrates the company's dominance in the market -- there are currently 3.6 billion Visa cards in use, which translates into almost half the world's population. In 2019, Visa processed more than 200 billion transactions, or more than $11 trillion in volume.</p>\n<p>Because Visa's model is a platform, it's a high-margin business that easily turns sales into profits. Operating margin was over 66% in Q3, and Visa turned $6.1 billion in revenue into $2.6 billion in net income. It also produced more than $4 billion in free cash flow, which it uses to grow its business as well as pay dividends and repurchase stock.</p>\n<p>Business plummeted during the height of pandemic restrictions, but the recovery is moving along. Revenue for the company's fiscal third quarter, covering the period ended June 30, increased 27% from the same period in 2020, but&nbsp; 10% over pre-pandemic 2019 levels.</p>\n<p>Because the pandemic was such an outlier, we can see Visa's strength more clearly in its long-term growth. As of the latest quarter, Visa has grown revenue by a 9.5%&nbsp;compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past five years, and net income by an even better rate of 14.3%.</p>\n<h2>Fintech revolution</h2>\n<p>One of the ways Visa is protecting its top spot in credit card processing is acquiring and making deals with fintech partners. Its proposed acquisition of Plaid, a private company that connects financial apps with institutions, was scrapped after it was given a no-go by regulators. But it's made many smaller acquisitions to grow its business and especially to stay relevant as digital payments become more important. Most recently, it acquired Currencycloud, an app that simplifies foreign exchange to make cross-border payments easier. In Q3, it also announced that it would acquire Tink, a Swedish-based open banking platform.</p>\n<p>Visa needs to upgrade its systems as companies like <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings</b>&nbsp;make it easier to send and spend money digitally. Contactless payments are increasing in popularity, and in the U.S. alone Visa customers have more than 370 million tap-to-pay cards. Installment plans have also taken off, with companies such as <b>Afterpay</b>&nbsp;(recently acquired by <b>Square</b>) and <b>Affirm Holdings</b>&nbsp;demonstrating strong growth, and Visa has launched its own version as well.</p>\n<h2>Rewarding investors</h2>\n<p>At Monday's prices, Visa's stock has gained roughly 190% over the past five years, almost double the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> index. U.S. health officials are currently reviewing the data as well as data generated in the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/UBNK\">United</a> States for a possible link to higher risk of heart inflammation. The report stated that the officials believe it is too early to conclude and issue any kind of new or revised warning or recommendation for mRNA-1273.</p>\n<p>We note that Pfizer’s BNT162b is already leading the vaccination race with $11.3 billion sales in the first half of 2021 compared to nearly $6 billion of sales from mRNA-1273. Moreover, the anticipated sales for 2021 for BNT162b and mRNA-1273 stands at $33.5 billion and approximately $19.2 billion, respectively.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, U.S. health officials have decided to start providing booster doses to the country’s citizens beginning in the first week of fall that will start on Sep 20. Amid rising support for booster doses for better protection against the Delta variant, the potential link to higher risk of heart inflammation may hurt demand for Moderna’s mRNA-1273, pushing it further back in the competition. Moreover, a few new COVID-19 vaccines may enter the U.S. markets this year, which will result in increased competition.</p>\n<p>Shares of Moderna fell 5.8% on Aug 19, following the reports on probe for higher risk of heart inflammation. However, similar inflammation cases were not reported following vaccination with <b>J&amp;J</b>’s JNJ adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccine. Following the investigation, the labels of both mRNA-based vaccines were updated to include a warning label for increased risk of myocarditis.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the United States is not the only country to probe various risks with possible links to mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines. The article implies that the risk of myocarditis following inoculation with mRNA-1273 can be more than previously thought and is also higher than Pfizer/BioNTech SE’s mRNA-based vaccine, BNT162b.\nPer the same Washington Post article, the claims of higher risk of myocarditis, especially for males below the age of 30 or so, following Moderna’s jab are majorly based on data from Canada. The same data suggests that vaccination with mRNA-1273 may increase the risk of incidence of myocarditis by 2.5-fold compared to BNT162b. U.S. health officials are currently reviewing the data as well as data generated in the United States for a possible link to higher risk of heart inflammation. The report stated that the officials believe it is too early to conclude and issue any kind of new or revised warning or recommendation for mRNA-1273.\nWe note that Pfizer’s BNT162b is already leading the vaccination race with $11.3 billion sales in the first half of 2021 compared to nearly $6 billion of sales from mRNA-1273. Moreover, the anticipated sales for 2021 for BNT162b and mRNA-1273 stands at $33.5 billion and approximately $19.2 billion, respectively.\nMeanwhile, U.S. health officials have decided to start providing booster doses to the country’s citizens beginning in the first week of fall that will start on Sep 20. Amid rising support for booster doses for better protection against the Delta variant, the potential link to higher risk of heart inflammation may hurt demand for Moderna’s mRNA-1273, pushing it further back in the competition. Moreover, a few new COVID-19 vaccines may enter the U.S. markets this year, which will result in increased competition.\nShares of Moderna fell 5.8% on Aug 19, following the reports on probe for higher risk of heart inflammation.
