And it's also not the only major European bank that's seeingtop traders head for the exits.</p>\n<p>Societe Generale just saw its top trading executive quit as CEO Frederic Oudea continues to shift the bank's focus away from the trading business in the wake of steep losses that SocGen booked during last year's market upheaval.</p>\n<p>Global markets head Jean-François Grégoire is leaving the job, to be replacd by Sylvain Cartier and Alexandre Fleury, who will jointly run the unit, SocGen said in a statement on Tuesday. Cartier will keep his current responsibilities overseeing credit, fixed income and currencies trading, while Fleury will continue to run the bank's most important trading franchises: equities and equity derivatives.</p>\n<p>Oudea, one of the longest-serving megabank CEOs in Europe, said last month that he plans to rely less on trading following losses last year from complex derivatives that didn’t perform as expected when the pandemic upended markets. Oudea was a staunch defender of the trading business until recently. This isn't the first executive shakeup in recent months at the bank. Oudea has already reshuffled top management in response to the trading losses, including ousting deputy CEO Severin Cabannes and promoting Slawomir Krupa to run the investment bank.</p>\n<blockquote>\n \"This new management structure of the market division, tighter and under my direct supervision, will allow us to strengthen day-to-day cooperation, alignment and agility within Global Markets,\" Krupa said in the statement.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Like Deutsche Bank, SocGen is being led to focus more on corporate banking and \"transactional\" banking. SocGen’s revenue from the global markets business has steadily declined in recent years, falling from €5.9 billion in 2017 ($7 billion) to €5.2 billion ($6.2 billion) in 2019. Trading losses booked during the first half of last year caused revenue to slump to €4.2 billion in the wake of the trading losses.</p>\n<p>But DB might also have some important lessons for SocGen: Although Deutsche Bank’s CEO Christian Sewing has made transaction banking a key pillar of his four-year turnaround plan, DB remains dependent on fixed-income trading, forcing Sewing to adjust his original plan.</p>\n<p>As for SocGen's new top traders, Cartier joined the bank originally as a trader in 1993 and took the helm of the fixed income business in 2019, just as the unit was undergoing a deep restructuring after a slump in sales.</p>\n<p>Prior to that, he was head of global markets in the Americas and worked across Asia in a variety of roles, including as regional head of the fixed income business in Hong Kong and head of emerging markets trading in Singapore. Fleury spent a decade working for SocGen in the early 2000s, where he was based in Tokyo, New York and Paris. Existing-home sales have fallen for three consecutive months, as supply hasn’t been able to keep up with demand.</p>\n<p>Wednesday 6/23</p>\n<p>Equinix hosts its 2021 analyst day, when the company will update its long-term financial outlook.</p>\n<p>GlaxoSmithKline hosts a conference call, featuring its CEO, Emma Walmsley, to update investors on the company’s strategy for growth and shareholder value creation.</p>\n<p>Johnson &amp; Johnson hosts a webcast to discuss its ESG strategy.</p>\n<p><b>The Census Bureau</b>reports new residential construction data for May. Consensus estimate is for a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 875,000 new single-family homes sold, slightly higher than April’s 863,000. The consensus call is for new orders of manufactured goods to rise 2.8% month over month to $253 billion. The remaining 3% came from its \"other\" businesses, which include its Oculus virtual reality (VR) headsets and Portal smart screens. It might initially seem odd for Facebook to add a smartwatch to that lineup, but it would actually complement its previous hardware strategies.</p>\n<p>Facebook's strongest hardware business is its lineup of Oculus VR headsets. It could ship at least three million Oculus Quest 2 headsets this year, according to SuperData. That would make the stand-alone VR headset, which doesn't require a PC or phone, the clear leader of its niche market.</p>\n<p>Looking beyond VR devices, Facebook is developing augmented reality (AR) glasses that will use similar controls as its Oculus headsets. It also acquired CTRL-Labs, which is developing a wristband that can use brain signals to control computers, in late 2019. In theory, CTRL-Labs' technology could eventually enable users to control VR and AR devices with \"mind-reading\" wristbands instead of controllers in the future.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Facebook's Portal devices haven't gained much momentum against <b>Amazon</b> (NASDAQ:AMZN) or <b>Alphabet</b>'s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google in the smart screen market. That failure likely dashed Facebook's hopes of expanding its social networking platforms beyond PCs and phones and into connected homes.</p>\n<p>When you put all those pieces together, you'll realize Facebook's smartwatch could be used to enhance control of its VR and AR devices, or to expand its social networks into the Internet of Things (IoT) and perhaps succeed where the Portal failed. Facebook could also eventually upgrade its watches with CTRL-Labs' technologies and enable users to control other IoT devices with their minds.</p>\n<h2>But let's not get ahead of ourselves... yet</h2>\n<p>Facebook has reportedly spent about $1 billion on the development of its smartwatch over the past few years, but it only initially plans to ship volumes in the low six figures.</p>\n<p>That would make Facebook a tiny smartwatch maker compared to <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL), which grew its Apple Watch shipments 19% to 33.9 million in 2020, according to Counterpoint Research. Apple ended the year with a whopping 40% share of the global smartwatch market.</p>\n<p>Facebook likely realizes its smartwatch will face the same three problems that plagued the Portal: a deep distrust of Facebook's brand, privacy concerns, and its late arrival into a saturated market. Google also encountered similar criticisms after its recent takeover of Fitbit.</p>\n<p>Facebook reportedly plans to launch its smartwatch next summer for about $400. But a lot could happen within the next year, and new smartwatches -- including a new version of the Apple Watch -- could easily steal Facebook's thunder. A smartwatch with two cameras could also be considered complicated and redundant, especially when smartphones and action cameras serve the same purposes.</p>\n<h2>The key takeaways</h2>\n<p>The global smartwatch market could still grow from $59 billion this year to nearly $100 billion in 2025, according to Research and Markets. That's great news for Apple, but it also suggests the market might still be big enough for newcomers like Facebook to gain a foothold.</p>\n<p>But investors should take all these rumors with a grain of salt until Facebook actually makes an official announcement. Both started leading their companies earlier this year.\nWhile the companies are rivals, the CEOs downplayed the competition, and suggested the two chipmakers could end up partnering in areas where they don’t overlap. Qualcomm makes (among other things) chips that connect to 5G networks, while Intel mainly builds central processing units (CPUs) that provide base computing power.\n“You know, we are the unquestioned compute leader, and Qualcomm’s the unquestioned comms leader. Compute meets comms. Right, a lot of new use cases,” Gelsinger said.\nAmon said that he believed that Intel’s foundry plan could be an advantage for Qualcomm, which uses outside foundries to make its chips.\n“There’s a lot of opportunities for the companies to cooperate.
