Lyft is expected to increase sales by 33%.
\n
Now let's zoom out for a broader view, skipping over 2020 and next year, to compare 2019 to 2023. Anmuth at J.P. Morgan expects Uber sales to go up 104% to $132.7 billion in 2023 from $65 billion in 2019. Lyft sales will rise 50% to $5.4 billion in 2023 from 2019 sales of $3.6 billion, he predicts. Again, Uber seems to have the edge.
\n
Next, the sales data show that Uber is much bigger. In fact, Uber is the largest on-demand ride-sharing provider in the world (outside of China). Analysts expect Uber to post $3.6 billion in sales for the second quarter, compared to $698 million at Lyft.
\n
Size matters because of the network effect. As the number of drivers increases, the quality of service improves, which attracts more users, which attracts more drivers, and so forth. Uber's size also means it has more user data, which is valuable as a tool for growing sales. This also helps it gain market share. Uber already has about 30% global market share and it will continue to gain share in the U.S. and globally, says Deutsche Bank analyst Lloyd Walmsley.
\n
But there is plenty of room for both companies to grow because the ride-share market is worth about $452 billion in annual sales (ex-China), says Morningstar analyst Ali Mogharabi.
\n
Cash and free cash flow
\n
(FACTSET)
\n
As the numbers above demonstrate, both companies are expected to see big improvement in cash flow this year and next. But Lyft will post a bigger swing, according to analyst estimates, and it will produce more cash flow per share next year. Lyft has the advantage in cash flow growth.
\n
Both companies hold a lot of debt -- $9.8 billion at Uber and $1 billion at Lyft. But they each have lots of ready cash as well, or $5.9 billion at Uber and $2.2 billion at Lyft. Cash and growing cash flow are important because they give the companies more freedom by reducing dependence on the capital markets.
\n
Diversification
\n
(COMPANY FILINGS)
\n
Besides rides, Uber offers food delivery via Uber Eats and freight-shipping services for businesses. It's also expanding into grocery, convenience store, and alcohol delivery, notes Anmuth. Uber has over 700,000 restaurant partners. Uber Eats accounts for 6% of gross bookings, and the company projects big growth over the next five years.
\n
\"The potential remains enormous,\" Khosrowshahi has said. So far, at least, reopening has not hit food delivery too hard.
\n
In contrast, Lyft is only in ride share. It's not in food delivery or logistics.
\n
The broader diversification gives Uber an edge because it has more avenues for growth. It also makes it more attractive for drivers to work with Uber, since they have the fallback of food delivery on the same platform when ride demand declines. And there are benefits of cross-selling to customers.
\n
The bottom line: In diversification, Uber seems to have the edge.
\n
International reach
\n
(COMPANY FILINGS)
\n
Uber also has much better international reach. This matters because during economic rebounds, many foreign economies grow faster than the economy in the U.S. Uber is in more than 70 countries -- mainly in the U.S. and Canada but also in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. It gets 30%-35% of its revenue from outside North America. Lyft serves fewer riders in part because it is focusing mainly on the U.S. market. Here again, Uber has the advantage.
\n
Lyft says it may expand its international offerings, and Lyft bulls might argue that the lack of an international presence merely creates an opportunity for bigger growth than at Uber, which has already rolled out its service abroad.
\n
Valuation
\n
(FACTSET)
\n
Lyft looks cheaper, based on forward price-to-sales estimates (see above).
\n
But by Morningstar's \"fair value\" analysis, Uber looks cheaper. Uber trades 40% below Morningstar's estimated fair value of $67 per share. Lyft trades 21% below Morningstar's estimated fair value of $61. At Morningstar, \"fair value\" means where the stock should trade now based on expected medium-term earnings growth.
\n
Both companies look cheap, relative to other tech companies. For example, J.P. Morgan analyst Anmuth has year-end price targets for Uber of $74 and $72 for Lyft. That's only around five times its 2022 sales estimates, compared to eight times for their internet marketplace peers, he says.
\n
Next, growth-oriented tech companies like Alphabet Inc. $(GOOGL)$, Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, Apple Inc. $(AAPL)$, Facebook Inc. This suggests Uber and Lyft shares could be a lot higher in two years, given that these two ride-share companies trade for 3.7 to 4 times expected 2022 sales now.
\n
Analysts' opinion
\n
(FACTSET)
\n
The majority of Wall Street analysts are bullish on these two ride-share companies. That's a positive. The analyst skew favors Lyft, since there are more analysts remaining to turn positive and drive clients into the stock. One-year price targets -- which aren't always accurate, of course -- suggest gains of 50% for Uber and 43% gains for Lyft over the next 12 months.
\n
\"Lyft remains a Top Pick in 2021, and as a pure-play ride-share business, our favorite recovery idea,\" says Anmuth. Offices, restaurants and bars are reopening. And even airports are seeing improved traffic,\" Uber Technologies Inc. $(UBER)$ CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said earlier this month.\nWe already see this change in the numbers. Ride volumes at Uber and Lyft Inc. $(LYFT)$ grew each month in the first quarter, with March showing the steepest recovery, points out J.P. Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth.\n\"We expect there is still much more to come,\" Lyft CEO Logan Green said earlier this month.\nBesides reopening, both companies are plays on this big-picture trend: Less interest in car ownership, in favor of ride sharing. That's because ride sharing \"offers the appeal of more flexibility at a lower cost than traditional car ownership,\" says Green.\nBoth Uber and Lyft will benefit. While these areas present massive growth opportunities, investors are being asked to pay a steep price right now.
\n
The shares currently trade at lofty valuation levels after a blistering run, so investors shouldn't expect the stock to deliver another 1,600% gain like it did over the previous five years. But NVIDIA still has lucrative opportunities emerging in software that could keep the business humming along.
\n
How NVIDIA stock returned 1,600% in five years
\n
NVIDIA has been on fire. Strong performance from its two largest segments -- gaming and data center -- resulted in revenue and earnings per share increasing by 53% and 73%, respectively, in fiscal 2021 (which ended in January).
\n
\n
It's not surprising that the stock price more than doubled over the last year, bringing its trailing five-year return to 1,610%. What fueled that impressive run was mostly NVIDIA's data center business. High growth in that segment not only caused revenue growth to accelerate but also caused NVIDIA's profits to explode, since data center products generate a higher gross margin than the rest of the business. This fueled stellar growth in earnings per share and wealth-building returns for investors.
\n
The shares are now priced for perfection at an exuberant price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 90. That is more than twice the P/E level five years ago. Stocks follow earnings in the long run, but stock prices can't increase faster than the rate of business growth forever.
\n
This doesn't mean NVIDIA can't perform well enough to send the stock higher from here, but the company can't afford a stumble either. In the near term, it is navigating through supply shortages of chips for gaming and data centers. While management believes they have enough supply to meet the demand for the full year, they will have to execute extremely well.
\n
That said, let's look at why it might be worth buying shares at these levels.
\n
Why it's worth paying up for NVIDIA stock
\n
In my experience investing in growth stocks, it's usually worth paying up for great companies. I've learned to consider valuation loosely. The reason is that investors tend to underestimate how long a company can grow. This is especially true of high-growth companies like NVIDIA that have massive opportunities to expand.
\n
Here are just a few examples of what NVIDIA is doing that speak to big return potential.
\n
NVIDIA is starting to describe itself more as a platform company, not just a chip supplier. It now provides software tools, software development kits, and applications on top of the hardware (GPUs) to allow enterprises to customize the chip to their specific needs.
\n
For example, NVIDIA AI Enterprise is a software platform that significantly reduces the time it takes for an organization to develop artificial intelligence solutions in the data center and cloud. NVIDIA offers this software with a perpetual license fee charged for each CPU socket, and it also comes as a subscription service. Management sees NVIDIA AI Enterprise as a multi-billion-dollar opportunity.
\n
Another catalyst that might be underestimated by investors is the well-publicized deal to acquire Arm Holdings from Softbank Group (OTC:SFTB.Y) (OTC:SFTBF) for a total transaction value of $40 billion. It's currently going through intense scrutiny by regulators in various countries. The reason is that NVIDIA stands to gain a dominant position in the global semiconductor industry since Arm's chip design is used in 90% of smartphones worldwide. Arm will also strengthen NVIDIA's position in other high-growth markets, including Internet of Things, cloud, self-driving cars, and robotics.
\n
Still, some investors might be losing hope that the deal will go through. Citi analyst Atif Malik sees just a 10% chance that NVIDIA walks away with Arm. On the flip side, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang recently stated that the deal is still on track to be completed by 2022.
\n
At this point, a completed transaction could bolster NVIDIA's share price, since there appears to be a diminishing expectation that the deal will happen at all. If NVIDIA wins Arm, management expects the deal to be immediately accretive to NVIDIA's adjusted gross margin and earnings per share.
\n
NVIDIA's future is wide open
\n
Even if the Arm deal fails to get approval, NVIDIA is well-positioned for a bright future. It's in the process of widening its competitive moat, creating a stickier ecosystem of hardware and software tools that should cement its future growth trajectory. Management previously estimated its total addressable market in data center at $100 billion, and that was before the recent unveiling of \"Grace\" -- NVIDIA's first CPU designed for the world's most powerful computers.
\n
NVIDIA is an essential technology provider for the future of computing across major sectors like healthcare and transportation. That might be enough reason to at least start a small position in the stock even at these high valuation levels.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is NVIDIA a Buy?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nIs NVIDIA a Buy?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-30 16:50 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) is enjoying strong demand for its graphics processing units (GPUs) across several markets, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and 5G networking.
