That's something that the very lackluster box office of this weekend has shown and it's not about to get better.

"Some studio distribution bosses used to say that moviegoing is a 52-week business. Well, that’s not the philosophy this weekend, and it’s even grimmer next weekend," wrote Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro.

January has never been a strong month at the box office, but it used to be possible to have hits in the post-Martin Luther King Day weekends, D'Alessandro noted.

"Back in the good ole days, and we’re talking five years ago, post-MLK was the time when Universal turned M. Night Shyamalan’s Blumhouse horror movie "Split"into an event with a $40M start, and Paramount settled for second on their Vin Diesel sequel, "xXx: Return of Xander Cage,"for $20.1M," he wrote.

How Bad Will This Weekend's Box Office Be?

Deadline forecasts that Jan. 21 through Jan. 23 will deliver a domestic box office of around $43-45 million. That's down from a pre-pandemic $105 million in 2020, $73 million in 2019, $102 million in 2018, and $111 million in 2017, according to data from Box Office Mojo.

In fact, 2019's total was the lowest box office haul for this weekend since 2001. In general, the next-to-last weekend of January has driven roughly $80-110 million in box office and this year will deliver around half of the mid-range of that number.

AMC's CEO Remains Optimistic

AMC CEO Adam Aron has been relentlessly positive when it comes to the state of the movie business. That is, of course, his job as it would be difficult for him to keep the company afloat if he acknowledged that while the numbers will bounce back from the pandemic lows, they may never fully recover. That's partly because of trends happening before the pandemic and partly due to changing patterns for film releases.

An increasing number of films come out either direct-to-streaming or in a hybrid model that limits how much money a film makes in theaters. Aron, however, chooses to focus on what he can control and commented during the company's most recent earnings call in November.

"At the beginning of 2021, we shared with you our view that both the film exhibition industry and AMC would see sequential improvements in the industrywide box office during the course of 2021," he said. "And indeed, we are seeing exactly that. The industry's box office has been meaningfully increasing each and every quarter, thanks to improved vaccination levels and an increasingly appealing film slate."

That has happened, but the reality is that only a certain type of movie -- call them megablockbusters -- still bring people to theaters. That's something that the very lackluster box office of this weekend has shown and it's not about to get better.\"Some studio distribution bosses used to say that moviegoing is a 52-week business. Well, that’s not the philosophy this weekend, and it’s even grimmer next weekend,\" wrote Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro.January has never been a strong month at the box office, but it used to be possible to have hits in the post-Martin Luther King Day weekends, D'Alessandro noted.\"Back in the good ole days, and we’re talking five years ago, post-MLK was the time when Universal turned M. Night Shyamalan’s Blumhouse horror movie \"Split\"into an event with a $40M start, and Paramount settled for second on their Vin Diesel sequel, \"xXx: Return of Xander Cage,\"for $20.1M,\" he wrote. How Bad Will This Weekend's Box Office Be?Deadline forecasts that Jan. 21 through Jan. 23 will deliver a domestic box office of around $43-45 million. That's down from a pre-pandemic $105 million in 2020, $73 million in 2019, $102 million in 2018, and $111 million in 2017, according to data from Box Office Mojo.In fact, 2019's total was the lowest box office haul for this weekend since 2001. In general, the next-to-last weekend of January has driven roughly $80-110 million in box office and this year will deliver around half of the mid-range of that number.AMC's CEO Remains OptimisticAMC CEO Adam Aron has been relentlessly positive when it comes to the state of the movie business. Aron, however, chooses to focus on what he can control and commented during the company's most recent earnings call in November.\"At the beginning of 2021, we shared with you our view that both the film exhibition industry and AMC would see sequential improvements in the industrywide box office during the course of 2021,\" he said. \"And indeed, we are seeing exactly that. The industry's box office has been meaningfully increasing each and every quarter, thanks to improved vaccination levels and an increasingly appealing film slate.\"That has happened, but the reality is that only a certain type of movie -- call them megablockbusters -- still bring people to theaters. The current box office, as well as the moves being made by the companies that produce movies, and the fact that most people have really big TVs in their homes make it likely that the movie business won't return to pre-pandemic levels.Walt Disney, for example, will release some of its films direct to its Disney+ streaming platform at no extra cost while others will be released on a hybrid basis where subscribers pay extra to see the movie. That means that movies that once came out in theaters either won't or will on a limited basis. By 2023, he is projecting Virgin Galactic’s revenue will grow to $115 million. For context, its market cap is now $10.8 billion. That valuation is slightly higher than Dick’s Sporting Goods(NYSE:DKS) at $9 billion. Bank of America is projecting $11.1 billion in revenue for Dick’s in 2023. Its debut was initially greeted with a collective \"meh\" -- shares opened for trading at $38 but closed out their first day below $35, an 8% drop.
\n
Since then, the stock has whipsawed a bit, surging 50% one day only to tumble over 25% the next. At Thursday's prices, Robinhood sits around 25% above its IPO price, which leads to the question of whether stock traders will fully embrace the platform the way they did to boost shares of AMC Entertainment Holdings and GameStop by 1,000% or more.
\n
There's certainly potential for Robinhood to gain meme stock status, but it's just as possible the online brokerage could be eventually shunned by those same traders.
\n
Robinhood's meme stock potential
\n
The online brokerage is growing fast. Monthly active users surged from 11.7 million at the end of last year to 22.5 million today. Robinhood itself says its growth has been because its business went viral, allowing 80% of its new accounts to join organically or through its referral program, which rewards investors with stock for referring someone to the platform.
\n
More than half of its new customers are first-time investors. That's partly a result of Robinhood's technology making investing accessible to broad swaths of the public. By eliminating transaction fees for buying and selling shares, it has made it easy and frictionless for investors to get into the stock market with very little money.
\n
Indeed, the average Robinhood investor is 31 years old and has an account balance around $4,500, according to the company. In comparison, the average account size at the biggest discount broker, Charles Schwab, is over $100,000.
\n
The online brokerage sought to reward retail investors for their support of its app by reserving between 20% and 35% of its IPO shares for users of its platform. Typically, retail investors get less than 10% of an IPO. Similar to how AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron offered free perks at the concession stand to engage with the retail investors who boosted the theater operator's stock, Robinhood was looking to bring those who used its app into the fold. The Wall Street Journal reports it ended up selling shares to 300,000 of its users, or about 1.3% of the total accounts.
\n
Factors arguing against it
\n
Yet skepticism about Robinhood remains, with many traders still believing the brokerage operates in league with hedge funds.
\n
When the trading frenzy broke out earlier this year and hedge funds were piling up massive losses as the shares of heavily shorted GameStop soared in value, Robinhood slammed the brakes on trading in the stock (and on a few others, too). First, traders were not able to buy any of its stock, only sell it, and then buying was restricted to just a handful of shares.
\n
The restrictions sucked the wind out of the sails of the GameStop rally, and while a number of short-sellers still suffered significant losses, they were eventually able to unwind their positions, something that would likely not have happened had Robinhood not limited trading in the stock.
\n
Yet Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said the hold was done to comply with Securities and Exchange Commission capital requirements. Because its separate Robinhood Securities division is required to make deposits with clearinghouses to cover the trades, and virtually all of the trading being done on the platform was occurring in just a couple of stocks, Robinhood was forced to limit buying until it could raise enough capital.
\n
Still, the episode left a bad impression with many traders.
\n
Does it matter?
\n
Regardless, the Robinhood platform remains popular, and its future looks bright. If it can keep most of its customers until they retire (or convert them to other types of accounts, such as credit cards or micro payments, as it says it wants to), the value can expand greatly over time.
\n
Robinhood also just acquired Say Technologies, a platform to connect shareholders with the companies they invest in. AMC Entertainment used Say's services on its most recent earnings conference call to field questions from retail investors, who dominated the call. In fact, only one Wall Street analyst was given time to ask a question.
\n
With its shares now trading above their IPO price, there's certainly support for Robinhood Markets stock, but the online brokerage that enabled retail investors to create so-called meme stocks in the first place doesn't seem to possess the same qualities around which traders can rally.
\n
It seems well on its way to democratize finance, but it's not likely Robinhood will become a meme stock itself.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Robinhood Just Went Public: Will It Become the Next Meme Stock?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nRobinhood Just Went Public: Will It Become the Next Meme Stock?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-13 19:14 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD), whose online brokerage helped democratize investing while fueling the meme-stock trading frenzy that persists today, went public recently to great fanfare. That data makes a strong case for adding at least a little tech exposure to your portfolio.

With that in mind, Adobe and Cloudflare look like two smart long-term investments. Cloudflare

Cloudflare operates a global cloud platform. Its portfolio includes an array of application, network, and security services, which collectively help its clients accelerate and protect their IT ecosystems. The company also provides developer tools that make it possible to build and deploy applications and websites directly on its low-latency, high-security network.

Cloudflare's vast infrastructure is one of its key advantages. The company has servers in 270 cities across more than 100 countries, and its platform interconnects with over 10,500 other networks. What does that mean? It means Cloudflare is fast. Internal studies have shown that its cloud platform can consistently outperform that of other vendors, including tech giants like Alphabet and Amazon. And Forrester Research recently recognized Cloudflare as the best edge development platform on the market, citing a strong current offering and a stronger growth strategy.

That competitive edge led to another round of impressive financial metrics in the first quarter. Paying customers rose 29% to 154,000, and the average customer spent 27% more. Revenue surged 54% to $212 million, and the company generated a non-GAAP (adjusted) profit of $0.01 per diluted share, up from a loss of $0.03 per diluted share in the prior year. That may not seem impressive, but management plans to run the business at breakeven in terms of profitability. With an $86 billion market opportunity, it makes sense to invest aggressively and reinforce its competitive edge.

Valuation makes Cloudflare the riskier of the two stocks discussed in this article. Even after dropping 74%, shares still trade at a pricy 27 times sales. However, the stock is cheaper today than it has been at any point in the past year. And given Cloudflare's financial track record and strong competitive position, I think this tech stock is worth buying.

2. Adobe

Software giant Adobe is a key enabler of digital transformation. Its digital media portfolio includes a suite of creativity software, and many of its products have become the gold standard in their respective industries. That includes Photoshop for image editing, Premiere Pro for video editing, and Illustrator for vector graphics. Adobe's digital media segment also includes Acrobat, a ubiquitous application for creating, editing, and sharing digital documents.

Likewise, on the digital experience side, Adobe offers solutions for analytics, marketing, and commerce. Those tools help organizations engage and delight consumers with personalized content. While Adobe is best known for its creativity software, many products on this side of the business are equally pervasive. For instance, Forrester Research recognized Adobe as a leader in enterprise marketing software in 2021, and Gartner ranked Adobe as a leader in digital experience platforms in 2022.

In short, Adobe provides two complementary suites of software that collectively facilitate the creation and delivery of digital content. Better yet, the company has achieved a strong competitive position in a number of different markets. That has translated into strong financial results. In the past year, revenue rose 18% to $16.1 billion, driven by double-digit growth in both digital media and digital experience, and free cash flow climbed 18% to $6.8 billion.

Going forward, the company puts its addressable market at $205 billion by 2024. Adobe is well-positioned to capitalize on that opportunity. Its lineup of industry-leading products and its capacity for innovation should drive growth for many years to come. And with newer creativity tools like Substance for 3D design and Aero for augmented reality, Adobe could even be a key player in the multi-trillion-dollar metaverse industry. That massive audience enabled Meta to build one of the world's top digital advertising platforms, which continued to grow even as it weathered antitrust probes, fines, and whistleblower scandals.

Meta still generates most of its revenue from ads, but it's likely sold over 10 million Oculus Quest 2 headsets over the past year, which gives it a firm hardware foundation to construct its VR metaverse.
