Today’s advance carried the index to within 1.9 percent of its 2021 record.</p><p>The market extended its gains after a collapse in <b>retail sales</b> alleviated pressure on the Reserve Bank to raise benchmark rates next week. Retail turnover contracted 3.9 percent last month as the increasing cost of living dampened buying. The decline was the first in 12 months.</p><p>“The large fall in December suggests that retail spending is slowing due to high cost-of-living pressures. Retail businesses reported that many consumers had responded to these pressures by doing more Christmas shopping in November to take advantage of heavy promotional activity and discounting as part of the Black Friday sales event,” Ben Dorber, head of retail statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, said.</p><p>The <b>Reserve Bank</b> meets next week for the first policy meeting of 2023. The bank is widely expected to hike the cash rate target by 25 basis points following the biggest increase in annual inflation since 1990.</p><p><b>Consumer confidence</b> continued to recover from recession levels. The ANZ-Roy Morgan confidence index edged up 0.9 percent to 86.8. While the index remained far below the long-term average, the four-week moving average rose to its highest since June.</p><p>Investors have taken advantage of a two-month break since the last <b>central bank meetings</b> to drive global equities sharply higher. Expectations for a slowdown in rate increases will be tested this week by meetings of the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of England.</p><p>US stocks retreated overnight ahead of rates decisions, earnings from the market’s biggest companies and December jobs data. The <b>S&amp;P 500</b> fell 1.3 percent.</p><p><b>Going up</b></p><p>Supermarkets Woolworths and Coles were among the morning’s best performers following upgrades from Credit Suisse. <b>Woolworths</b> rallied 2.73 percent. <b>Coles</b> gained 2.25 percent.</p><p><b>Healthcare</b> was the session’s other big winner. ResMed led with a rise of 2.07 percent. Healius added 1.25 percent, CSL 0.82 percent and Cochlear 0.73 percent.</p><p><b>Beach Energy</b> rallied 3.82 percent after reaffirming its confidence in the prospects for the Perth Basin despite downgrading its reserves there. CEO Morne Englebrecht said the firm was confident it would meet its domestic demand commitments.</p><p>Record quarterly production lifted <b>Nickel Industries</b> 2.05 percent. The Indonesia-focussed miner produced 23,072 tonnes of nickel metal, up from 20,275 tonnes the previous quarter. Record sales of US$371.2 million helped generate record earnings of US$90 million.</p><p><b>Centuria Industrial REIT</b> climbed 0.3 percent to a seven-month high after reaffirming guidance for its full-year distribution and funds from operations. The firm’s returns were supported by an acceleration in industrial market rents due to low vacancies and solid demand.</p><p><b>Flight Centre</b> entered a trading halt to raise funds to acquire luxury travel brand Scott Dunn. The travel agent will pay $211 million for the UK firm, which specialises in tailor-made high-end holidays. The acquisition will be funded via a $180 million institutional placement and a $40 million retail share purchase offer.</p><p><b>Going down</b></p><p>Network connectivity specialist <b>Megaport</b> tumbled 22.66 percent amid signs of slowing growth last quarter. The company said “current economic certainty seems to be delaying customer decision making”. Customer numbers increased just 1 percent from the previous quarter. Monthly recurring revenues grew 7 percent.</p><p>A record half-year profit failed to keep nickel miner <b>IGO</b> in positive territory during a tough session for battery metal producers. The miner increased its first-half profit sixfold to $591 million from $91 million in 1H22. Revenue increased 43 percent to $542 million. Shares in the firm dropped 3.25 percent.</p><p>Other <b>battery metal producers</b> to feel the heat from an overnight softening in sentiment were Novonix -6.46 percent, Sayona Mining -4.24 percent and Core Lithium -4.27 percent.</p><p>A revenue and earnings downgrade just weeks after returning to the boards drove beauty and personal care retailer <b>BWX</b> down 10.42 percent. The company lowered its revenue guidance from $205-$230 million to $170-$190 million. Forecast earnings dropped to $10-$15 million from previous guidance of $25-$30 million. Weak US sales and stock shortages were cited as causes for the downgrade.</p><p>Infant formula specialist <b>Bubs</b> dropped 7.04 percent after China’s Covid-19 lockdowns caused a slump in a key market. Chinese revenues contracted by 66 percent in the second quarter, comparted to the prior corresponding period. Group revenues declined 28 percent to $14.3 million.</p><p><b>Vicinity Centres</b> dipped 0.48 percent after appointing Peter Huddle as CEO and Managing Director. Huddle joined the firm as Chief Operating Officer in 2019 and had been acting CEO since mid-November.</p><p><b>Other markets</b></p><p><b>Asian markets</b> were mixed. The Asia Dow firmed 0.13 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.55 percent. China’s Shanghai Composite shed 0.1 percent. Today’s advance extended the benchmark’s advance for the month to almost 6.5 percent, its best return since a 9.95 percent surge in November 2020.Supermarkets and healthcare companies provided much of the momentum, supported by bulk metal miners and some of the banks. Tech stocks and battery metal miners dragged.What’s driving the marketThe Australian benchmark looked set to end a strong month at a fresh nine-month high. Today’s advance carried the index to within 1.9 percent of its 2021 record.The market extended its gains after a collapse in retail sales alleviated pressure on the Reserve Bank to raise benchmark rates next week. Retail turnover contracted 3.9 percent last month as the increasing cost of living dampened buying. The decline was the first in 12 months.“The large fall in December suggests that retail spending is slowing due to high cost-of-living pressures. Retail businesses reported that many consumers had responded to these pressures by doing more Christmas shopping in November to take advantage of heavy promotional activity and discounting as part of the Black Friday sales event,” Ben Dorber, head of retail statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, said.The Reserve Bank meets next week for the first policy meeting of 2023. Record sales of US$371.2 million helped generate record earnings of US$90 million.Centuria Industrial REIT climbed 0.3 percent to a seven-month high after reaffirming guidance for its full-year distribution and funds from operations. The firm’s returns were supported by an acceleration in industrial market rents due to low vacancies and solid demand.Flight Centre entered a trading halt to raise funds to acquire luxury travel brand Scott Dunn. The travel agent will pay $211 million for the UK firm, which specialises in tailor-made high-end holidays. The acquisition will be funded via a $180 million institutional placement and a $40 million retail share purchase offer.Going downNetwork connectivity specialist Megaport tumbled 22.66 percent amid signs of slowing growth last quarter. The company said “current economic certainty seems to be delaying customer decision making”. Customer numbers increased just 1 percent from the previous quarter. Monthly recurring revenues grew 7 percent.A record half-year profit failed to keep nickel miner IGO in positive territory during a tough session for battery metal producers. The miner increased its first-half profit sixfold to $591 million from $91 million in 1H22. Revenue increased 43 percent to $542 million. Shares in the firm dropped 3.25 percent.Other battery metal producers to feel the heat from an overnight softening in sentiment were Novonix -6.46 percent, Sayona Mining -4.24 percent and Core Lithium -4.27 percent.A revenue and earnings downgrade just weeks after returning to the boards drove beauty and personal care retailer BWX down 10.42 percent. The company lowered its revenue guidance from $205-$230 million to $170-$190 million. Forecast earnings dropped to $10-$15 million from previous guidance of $25-$30 million. Hopes that the Fed could soon ease back on its aggressive tightening after raising the federal funds rate seven times in 2022 have boosted the market in recent sessions, even as comments by some Fed officials have supported the view that the central bank needs to remain vigilant about raising rates to fight inflation.</p><p>&#34;Investors are anticipating that we&#39;re closer to a pause than at any other point last year,&#34; said Jake Dollarhide, chief executive officer of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That will not necessarily be the case. As the factors driving the market lower over the past 12 months persist, plenty of stocks, including some names that have experienced huge drops from their highs, remain stocks to sell.</p><p>The valuation of some of these stocks remain quite elevated.  That’s because, although richly priced growth stocks have been particularly hard hit due to the rapid rise of interest rates. many names remain overpriced relative to their respective, future prospects.</p><p>Additionally, some stocks will drop further because their fundamentals are deteriorating. With spiking interest rates weighing on economic growth and some economists expecting GDP to contract this year, many companies that were ‘”crushing it” during the pandemic era are at risk of getting “crushed.”</p><p>Investors should unload or steer clear of these seven stocks to sell. Each one of them could get buried further in 2023.</p><p><b>Airbnb (ABNB)</b></p><p>After falling nearly 50% over the past year, <b>Airbnb</b>(NASDAQ: <b>ABNB</b>) may already reflect the end of the “revenge travel” boom, some may argue. Yet despite the big drop of ABNB’s price, the shares are likely to drop further due to two factors that I highlighted in the introduction:  Valuation and worsening fundamentals.</p><p>Right now, ABNB stock trades for 35.5 times its earnings. That would arguably be a reasonable valuation if the company was still poised to grow rapidly.  But with analysts’ estimates calling for the firm to deliver earnings growth of just8.1%in the next year, ABNB’s current price-earnings ratio is excessive.</p><p>Even worse, its results in the coming year could fall to meet analysts’ average estimate. At least, that’s the view of <b>Morgan Stanley</b> analyst Brian Nowak. On Dec. 6, he downgraded ABNB, citing factors such as its slowing active listings growth, as well as concerns that the future increases in its occupancy rates will fall short of forecasts.</p><p><b>Coinbase (COIN)</b></p><p>After tumbling 86% last year, <b>Coinbase</b>(NASDAQ: <b>COIN</b>) may seem at first glance to have a positive risk-reward ratio and provide investors with a good way to bet on a cryptocurrency recovery. Unfortunately, while the shares of the crypto-exchange operator are significantly cheaper today than they were at the start of 2022, there are many reasons to believe that the stock will sink further over the next 12 months.</p><p>As veteran investor and <i>InvestorPlace</i> contributor Louis Navellier argued in his Dec. 16 column, COIN stock will likely tumble deeper into the icy “crypto winter waters”in 2023. After cryptos had already been burned by the big, across-the-board decline of cryptocurrency prices, the recent FTX scandal has provided retail investors with yet another reason to avoid the asset class.</p><p>With many retail investors shunning cryptos, it’s difficult to imagine Coinbase’s revenue, which is expected to have dropped by more than 50% in 2022, making much of a recovery this year. With the odds of another “crypto boom” emerging in the future tiny, COIN will probably continue to crumble.</p><p><b>First Solar (FSLR)</b></p><p>In contrast to most of the other stocks to sell in this column, <b>First Solar</b>(NASDAQ: <b>FSLR</b>) was on a tear last year, jumping 72%. Its gain was thanks mostly to the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed into law by President Biden in August.</p><p>The law provides ample tax incentives and subsidies to the renewable energy sector. Yet while the legislation is set to boost the company, it’s possible that the market has gone overboard pricing this positive catalyst into FSLR stock. Indeed, the shares today trade for 169 times its earnings.</p><p>Although many believe that First Solar’s profitability will skyrocket next year, that may not happen. As a <i>Seeking Alpha</i> commentator recently argued,a looming recession and tough competition suggest that the company’s profits will fall short of the Street’s outlook.</p><p>While FSLR is still a market darling now, that may not remain the case for long.</p><p><b>GameStop (GME)</b></p><p>The “meme stocks” trend is so 2021. But even in the early stages of 2023 the “meme king, ”<b>GameStop</b>(NYSE:<b>GME</b>), has held onto a modest amount of its gains from the speculative frenzy that transpired nearly two years ago.</p><p>Yet while GameStop is faring better than many of its meme peers like <b>AMC Entertainment</b>(NYSE:<b>AMC</b>), don’t assume GME will keep holding up. The shares continue to be valued primarily on the perceived potential of GameStop’s nascent e-commerce and non-fungible token (or NFT) exchange ventures.  However, the future prospects of these endeavors, which are arguably “moonshots,” are extremely murky.</p><p>Furthermore, GameStop’s core brick-and-mortar retail business continues to flounder, as the video game industry enters a slump. As the company burns through more of its$1 billion of cash, GME stock looks to be on track to keep falling steadily back to its pre-meme price levels. In other words, it’s probably going to fall below $5 per share.</p><p><b>Nvidia (NVDA)</b></p><p><b>Nvidia</b>(NASDAQ: <b>NVDA</b>) stock is also partially, but not fully, pricing in the macroeconomic challenges facing companies. The chipmaker definitely “crushed it” during the pandemic era. Between its fiscal 2020 and FY22, its revenue more than doubled, while its earnings more than tripled.</p><p>However, with the demand for its CPU and GPU chips softening, analysts, on average, expect its revenue to be little changed this fiscal year compared with the last one. What’s more, analysts’ mean estimate calls for its earnings to decline 15.6%, to $3.30 per share. Not only that, but NVDA’s situation could worsen in FY23, as another“chip glut”isn’t out of the question.</p><p>Given these points, along with the fact that NVDA stock trades at a pricey 62 times its trailing earnings, the stock is unlikely to climb a great deal and is poised to sink much further.</p><p>After this year’s tech selloff, many names are now appealing, but NVDA isn’t one of them.</p><p><b>Tesla (TSLA)</b></p><p>In 2020 and 2021, <b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ: <b>TSLA</b>) slayed its skeptics, as the electric vehicle maker’s earnings skyrocketed, and EV stocks soared as the sector entered bubble territory.</p><p>Over the past year, though, TSLA stock, at one time seemingly unsinkable, has fallen considerably, causing the shares’ forward price-earnings multiple to tumble.  As a result, some believe that the shares have become a steal. So is it time to go bottom fishing with Tesla? Not so fast!</p><p>Believing that TSLA (trading for 22 times forward earnings) is a buy may just be an example of giving too much value to its huge decline.</p><p>That’s because the circumstances that drove this stock to its prior, lofty highs aren’t likely to re-emerge. In fact, as it becomes clearer that Tesla is a car company which is not immune to the cyclical nature of the auto business, its valuation may sink to levels more in line with that of the incumbent automakers.</p><p><b>Upstart Holdings (UPST)</b></p><p>It may seem odd to say that <b>Upstart Holdings</b>(NASDAQ:<b>UPST</b>) still belongs in the “stocks to sell” category, since the shares of the fintech firm currently trade at levels which are light years away from their all-time high. Yet much like Tesla, the “story” behind this former “hot stock” has unraveled.</p><p>As I’ve argued previously, the market in 2021overestimated the ability of Upstart’s AI-powered loan underwriting platform to “disrupt” the lending industry. Investors who bought UPST stock near its all-time high paid dearly for their decision, as the company’s growth screeched to a halt, and concerns about its underwriting methods spiked.</p><p>Even after UPST dropped 91% last year, it can suffer another decline of around 18%. With spiking interest rates weighing on economic growth and some economists expecting GDP to contract this year, many companies that were ‘”crushing it” during the pandemic era are at risk of getting “crushed.”Investors should unload or steer clear of these seven stocks to sell. Each one of them could get buried further in 2023.Airbnb (ABNB)After falling nearly 50% over the past year, Airbnb(NASDAQ: ABNB) may already reflect the end of the “revenge travel” boom, some may argue. Yet despite the big drop of ABNB’s price, the shares are likely to drop further due to two factors that I highlighted in the introduction:  Valuation and worsening fundamentals.Right now, ABNB stock trades for 35.5 times its earnings. That would arguably be a reasonable valuation if the company was still poised to grow rapidly.  But with analysts’ estimates calling for the firm to deliver earnings growth of just8.1%in the next year, ABNB’s current price-earnings ratio is excessive.Even worse, its results in the coming year could fall to meet analysts’ average estimate. At least, that’s the view of Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak. On Dec. 6, he downgraded ABNB, citing factors such as its slowing active listings growth, as well as concerns that the future increases in its occupancy rates will fall short of forecasts.Coinbase (COIN)After tumbling 86% last year, Coinbase(NASDAQ: COIN) may seem at first glance to have a positive risk-reward ratio and provide investors with a good way to bet on a cryptocurrency recovery. Unfortunately, while the shares of the crypto-exchange operator are significantly cheaper today than they were at the start of 2022, there are many reasons to believe that the stock will sink further over the next 12 months.As veteran investor and InvestorPlace contributor Louis Navellier argued in his Dec. 16 column, COIN stock will likely tumble deeper into the icy “crypto winter waters”in 2023. After cryptos had already been burned by the big, across-the-board decline of cryptocurrency prices, the recent FTX scandal has provided retail investors with yet another reason to avoid the asset class.With many retail investors shunning cryptos, it’s difficult to imagine Coinbase’s revenue, which is expected to have dropped by more than 50% in 2022, making much of a recovery this year. With the odds of another “crypto boom” emerging in the future tiny, COIN will probably continue to crumble.First Solar (FSLR)In contrast to most of the other stocks to sell in this column, First Solar(NASDAQ: FSLR) was on a tear last year, jumping 72%. Its gain was thanks mostly to the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed into law by President Biden in August.The law provides ample tax incentives and subsidies to the renewable energy sector. Yet while the legislation is set to boost the company, it’s possible that the market has gone overboard pricing this positive catalyst into FSLR stock. Indeed, the shares today trade for 169 times its earnings.Although many believe that First Solar’s profitability will skyrocket next year, that may not happen. As a Seeking Alpha commentator recently argued,a looming recession and tough competition suggest that the company’s profits will fall short of the Street’s outlook.While FSLR is still a market darling now, that may not remain the case for long.GameStop (GME)The “meme stocks” trend is so 2021. But even in the early stages of 2023 the “meme king, ”GameStop(NYSE:GME), has held onto a modest amount of its gains from the speculative frenzy that transpired nearly two years ago.Yet while GameStop is faring better than many of its meme peers like AMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC), don’t assume GME will keep holding up. The shares continue to be valued primarily on the perceived potential of GameStop’s nascent e-commerce and non-fungible token (or NFT) exchange ventures.  However, the future prospects of these endeavors, which are arguably “moonshots,” are extremely murky.Furthermore, GameStop’s core brick-and-mortar retail business continues to flounder, as the video game industry enters a slump. As the company burns through more of its$1 billion of cash, GME stock looks to be on track to keep falling steadily back to its pre-meme price levels. In other words, it’s probably going to fall below $5 per share.Nvidia (NVDA)Nvidia(NASDAQ: NVDA) stock is also partially, but not fully, pricing in the macroeconomic challenges facing companies. The chipmaker definitely “crushed it” during the pandemic era. Between its fiscal 2020 and FY22, its revenue more than doubled, while its earnings more than tripled.However, with the demand for its CPU and GPU chips softening, analysts, on average, expect its revenue to be little changed this fiscal year compared with the last one. What’s more, analysts’ mean estimate calls for its earnings to decline 15.6%, to $3.30 per share. Not only that, but NVDA’s situation could worsen in FY23, as another“chip glut”isn’t out of the question.Given these points, along with the fact that NVDA stock trades at a pricey 62 times its trailing earnings, the stock is unlikely to climb a great deal and is poised to sink much further.After this year’s tech selloff, many names are now appealing, but NVDA isn’t one of them.Tesla (TSLA)In 2020 and 2021, Tesla(NASDAQ: TSLA) slayed its skeptics, as the electric vehicle maker’s earnings skyrocketed, and EV stocks soared as the sector entered bubble territory.Over the past year, though, TSLA stock, at one time seemingly unsinkable, has fallen considerably, causing the shares’ forward price-earnings multiple to tumble.  As a result, some believe that the shares have become a steal. So is it time to go bottom fishing with Tesla? Not so fast!Believing that TSLA (trading for 22 times forward earnings) is a buy may just be an example of giving too much value to its huge decline.That’s because the circumstances that drove this stock to its prior, lofty highs aren’t likely to re-emerge. In fact, as it becomes clearer that Tesla is a car company which is not immune to the cyclical nature of the auto business, its valuation may sink to levels more in line with that of the incumbent automakers.Upstart Holdings (UPST)It may seem odd to say that Upstart Holdings(NASDAQ:UPST) still belongs in the “stocks to sell” category, since the shares of the fintech firm currently trade at levels which are light years away from their all-time high. Yet much like Tesla, the “story” behind this former “hot stock” has unraveled.As I’ve argued previously, the market in 2021overestimated the ability of Upstart’s AI-powered loan underwriting platform to “disrupt” the lending industry. Investors who bought UPST stock near its all-time high paid dearly for their decision, as the company’s growth screeched to a halt, and concerns about its underwriting methods spiked.Even after UPST dropped 91% last year, it can suffer another decline of around 18%. They show the effect of higher interest rates and a global slowdown hitting home, even in resilient Singapore.</p><p>Sea is the parent company of Shopee, the largest online shopping platform in South-east Asia, and the maker of popular games like Free Fire. It was founded by Singapore billionaire Forrest Li, who went on to buy Lion City Sailors, the Singapore Premier League’s first privatised club.</p><p>Just a few weeks ago, the club announced the departure of six highly paid players, including Gabriel Quak, Faris Ramli, Shahdan Sulaiman and Hassan Sunny, who have a laudable combined tally of 289 caps for the national team.</p><p>The move follows a massive cost-cutting drive Sea has embarked on over the past six months. It has laid off some 7,000 staff spanning many business functions in Singapore, reduced expenses, and shut operations in European and Latin American markets.</p><p>In theory, being a footballer should be one of the most secure occupations during a downturn and furthest removed from the tech industry’s woes. But the series of events only goes to show that nobody’s job is safe in an economic downturn. Not when the tentacles of technology giants like Sea have reached far and wide into the most unexpected places in their earlier expansionary phase, when money was cheap and a positive reputation arising from supporting the local football scene could be secured for a pretty penny.</p><p>A global economic storm of epic proportions is brewing around the world as supply chain shocks and surging demand have pushed up prices of goods and services, and a slew of layoffs threatens to unleash a wave of unemployment. Yet here in Singapore, real median wages have grown by 2.1 per cent. Employment has ticked up in the resident workforce.</p><p><b>The optics of keeping footballers but firing techies</b></p><p>Indeed, in the case of the hapless Lion City Sailors and Sea, this might be as much a case of optics as it is about hard dollars and cents.</p><p>It would be incongruous for Mr Li – Sea’s chief executive, whose wealth has fallen from US$22 billion (S$30 billion) in 2021 to just over US$3 billion as the company’s shares fell 87 per cent from their peak – to keep bankrolling his beloved football club on the one hand while dishing out severance packages to employees at his tech enterprise on the other. Sea would not only appear insensitive to staff made redundant, but also have its business priorities called into question by shareholders.</p><p>But where the cull at Lion City Sailors arising from Sea’s belt-tightening measures is concerned, the inconvenient question must be asked: Did Sea really need to be that brutal and thorough in getting the company back in the black?</p><p>Sure, the alarm bells of a rougher ride ahead for businesses have been sounded. Central banks around the world – with the notable exception of the Bank of Japan and the People’s Bank of China – are in monetary tightening mode. They are hoisting interest rates and shrinking their balance sheets through quantitative tightening. The United States Federal Reserve is committed to withdrawing US$95 billion a month throughout 2023. In other words, more than US$1 trillion will disappear from the global economy next year.</p><p>On the other hand, amid all this, Sea still has about US$10 billion of cash on its balance sheet as at the last count. How much cash can it possibly need?</p><p>The answer? It needs much more. In its annual filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Sea’s cash flow from operations in 2021 was negative to the tune of US$2 billion. Essentially, it might have only five years of available cash to keep its business afloat if it continues to burn cash at this rate.</p><p>Having enough to ride out five years might seem like a decently sized war chest. But let’s not forget that after the bursting of the dot.com bubble in 2000, it took nearly a decade for the telecoms, media and technology, or TMT, sector to recover. It could take just as long this time, if not longer, for investors to rediscover their once-insatiable appetite for growth at any cost.</p><p><b>Why the need for a cash hoard?</b></p><p>Many seasoned investors believe that cash is king for good reason. Cash is one of the most valuable assets to have in times of uncertainty. Without cash, a business cannot pay its wages, rent, suppliers – or the taxman.</p><p>Cash is also an especially reassuring buffer for an e-commerce and gaming company to have during a period of volatility when many once-reliable revenue streams and giant cash cows could come under assault, as consumer behaviours change and people curb spending. In this storm, cash provides the business with security in meeting financial commitments and providing affirmation to shareholders it can weather this downturn without going bust.</p><p>Beyond being a vital lifeline, a strong balance sheet packed with cash can be a resource multiplier, allowing Sea the financial flexibility to take advantage of beaten-down, undervalued stocks and snap up new business opportunities.</p><p>But how much cash should a company hold before it’s punished for not putting that capital to better use? That really depends on its sector. Experienced companies in cyclical sectors such as property and commodities should have enough cash on their balance sheets to cope with predictable downturns.</p><p>A technology company, meanwhile, should try to hold enough cash to survive at least six months of cash burn. Many tech start-ups like <b>Grab</b> (NASDAQ: GRAB) and Gojek are still unprofitable and very cash-hungry. But six months’ worth of cash might be insufficient if this bearish market persists. So isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?</p><p>Plus, it’s one thing for flavour-of-the-year start-ups to burn through cash when the global economy is awash with liquidity and investors have the risk appetite to stomach losses in exchange for some lofty, long-term and remote objective of market dominance. But not when money is tight and investors might be tempted to cash out, the way <b>Tencent</b> (HKSE: 0700), Sea’s biggest backer, did in January when it trimmed its stake.</p><p>Consequently, the problem is that cash burned today is increasingly difficult to replenish tomorrow, whether through selling more shares or issuing debt when interest rates are high and stock markets are volatile. Better then, as Sea has decided, to stretch every dollar on hand.</p><p><b>Times are rough</b></p><p>That leaves cost-cutting as the only way to stabilise the ship and rein in spending for the next little while – whether this involves retrenching staff, mothballing cash-hungry projects, slaughtering sacred cows or jettisoning vanity projects like bankrolling a beloved soccer club.</p><p>Sea seems to understand that the coming onslaught will be a brutal test in which only the fittest will survive. Full marks then for the company. It has taken the bull by the horns, with three rounds of job cuts. It has axed staff in supporting functions like human resources and learning and development – disciplining business units that are cost centres while being more careful about touching profit-generating departments.</p><p>But what this means is that other Sea divisions not generating profit and producing significant cash flow could be in peril.</p><p>The trouble is, the company has only one profitable business segment: Garena. The video-game publisher made US$2.5 billion in operating profit in 2021. That division has helped to prop up Sea’s unprofitable e-commerce and fintech businesses. Those two divisions, by comparison, made operating losses of US$2.76 billion and US$640 million in 2021, respectively.</p><p>The question is whether Sea really needs to be that brutal with its restructuring. After all, it still had US$10.2 billion of cash on its balance sheet at the end of its 2021 financial year. However, by the end of the third quarter in 2022, that cash pile had shrunk to US$6.2 billion. It had burned through US$4 billion in nine months. That is a lot of cash going up in smoke. It can’t afford to carry on as before.</p><p>Garena, its profit engine, is stalling as fewer people are playing video games in a post-pandemic world. Additionally, an unexpected ban on its battle royale game, Free Fire, in India, which is one of its fastest-growing markets, has put a pause on growth.</p><p>Consequently, Sea has set out a clear strategy to forestall the coming financial storm by shifting away from expansion into consolidation mode. Investors will expect more out of this South-east Asia tech darling, the world’s best-performing stock in 2020, given its maturity relative to younger peers like Grab and Gojek, which listed only in the past year.</p><p>The unfortunate result is the long list of casualties, hailing from the unlikeliest places like Lion City Sailors.</p><p>There are many who say a recession will not arrive on Singapore’s shores in 2023 even as the city state battles a long period of inflation, high interest rates and slower growth. They show the effect of higher interest rates and a global slowdown hitting home, even in resilient Singapore.Sea is the parent company of Shopee, the largest online shopping platform in South-east Asia, and the maker of popular games like Free Fire. It was founded by Singapore billionaire Forrest Li, who went on to buy Lion City Sailors, the Singapore Premier League’s first privatised club.Just a few weeks ago, the club announced the departure of six highly paid players, including Gabriel Quak, Faris Ramli, Shahdan Sulaiman and Hassan Sunny, who have a laudable combined tally of 289 caps for the national team.The move follows a massive cost-cutting drive Sea has embarked on over the past six months. It has laid off some 7,000 staff spanning many business functions in Singapore, reduced expenses, and shut operations in European and Latin American markets.In theory, being a footballer should be one of the most secure occupations during a downturn and furthest removed from the tech industry’s woes. But the series of events only goes to show that nobody’s job is safe in an economic downturn. Not when the tentacles of technology giants like Sea have reached far and wide into the most unexpected places in their earlier expansionary phase, when money was cheap and a positive reputation arising from supporting the local football scene could be secured for a pretty penny.A global economic storm of epic proportions is brewing around the world as supply chain shocks and surging demand have pushed up prices of goods and services, and a slew of layoffs threatens to unleash a wave of unemployment. Yet here in Singapore, real median wages have grown by 2.1 per cent. Employment has ticked up in the resident workforce.The optics of keeping footballers but firing techiesIndeed, in the case of the hapless Lion City Sailors and Sea, this might be as much a case of optics as it is about hard dollars and cents.It would be incongruous for Mr Li – Sea’s chief executive, whose wealth has fallen from US$22 billion (S$30 billion) in 2021 to just over US$3 billion as the company’s shares fell 87 per cent from their peak – to keep bankrolling his beloved football club on the one hand while dishing out severance packages to employees at his tech enterprise on the other. Sea would not only appear insensitive to staff made redundant, but also have its business priorities called into question by shareholders.But where the cull at Lion City Sailors arising from Sea’s belt-tightening measures is concerned, the inconvenient question must be asked: Did Sea really need to be that brutal and thorough in getting the company back in the black?Sure, the alarm bells of a rougher ride ahead for businesses have been sounded. Central banks around the world – with the notable exception of the Bank of Japan and the People’s Bank of China – are in monetary tightening mode. They are hoisting interest rates and shrinking their balance sheets through quantitative tightening. The United States Federal Reserve is committed to withdrawing US$95 billion a month throughout 2023. In other words, more than US$1 trillion will disappear from the global economy next year.On the other hand, amid all this, Sea still has about US$10 billion of cash on its balance sheet as at the last count. How much cash can it possibly need?The answer? It needs much more. In its annual filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Sea’s cash flow from operations in 2021 was negative to the tune of US$2 billion. Essentially, it might have only five years of available cash to keep its business afloat if it continues to burn cash at this rate.Having enough to ride out five years might seem like a decently sized war chest. But let’s not forget that after the bursting of the dot.com bubble in 2000, it took nearly a decade for the telecoms, media and technology, or TMT, sector to recover. It could take just as long this time, if not longer, for investors to rediscover their once-insatiable appetite for growth at any cost.Why the need for a cash hoard?Many seasoned investors believe that cash is king for good reason. Cash is one of the most valuable assets to have in times of uncertainty. Without cash, a business cannot pay its wages, rent, suppliers – or the taxman.Cash is also an especially reassuring buffer for an e-commerce and gaming company to have during a period of volatility when many once-reliable revenue streams and giant cash cows could come under assault, as consumer behaviours change and people curb spending. In this storm, cash provides the business with security in meeting financial commitments and providing affirmation to shareholders it can weather this downturn without going bust.Beyond being a vital lifeline, a strong balance sheet packed with cash can be a resource multiplier, allowing Sea the financial flexibility to take advantage of beaten-down, undervalued stocks and snap up new business opportunities.But how much cash should a company hold before it’s punished for not putting that capital to better use? That really depends on its sector. Experienced companies in cyclical sectors such as property and commodities should have enough cash on their balance sheets to cope with predictable downturns.A technology company, meanwhile, should try to hold enough cash to survive at least six months of cash burn. Many tech start-ups like Grab (NASDAQ: GRAB) and Gojek are still unprofitable and very cash-hungry. But six months’ worth of cash might be insufficient if this bearish market persists. So isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?Plus, it’s one thing for flavour-of-the-year start-ups to burn through cash when the global economy is awash with liquidity and investors have the risk appetite to stomach losses in exchange for some lofty, long-term and remote objective of market dominance. But not when money is tight and investors might be tempted to cash out, the way Tencent (HKSE: 0700), Sea’s biggest backer, did in January when it trimmed its stake.Consequently, the problem is that cash burned today is increasingly difficult to replenish tomorrow, whether through selling more shares or issuing debt when interest rates are high and stock markets are volatile. Better then, as Sea has decided, to stretch every dollar on hand.Times are roughThat leaves cost-cutting as the only way to stabilise the ship and rein in spending for the next little while – whether this involves retrenching staff, mothballing cash-hungry projects, slaughtering sacred cows or jettisoning vanity projects like bankrolling a beloved soccer club.Sea seems to understand that the coming onslaught will be a brutal test in which only the fittest will survive. Full marks then for the company. It has taken the bull by the horns, with three rounds of job cuts. It has axed staff in supporting functions like human resources and learning and development – disciplining business units that are cost centres while being more careful about touching profit-generating departments.But what this means is that other Sea divisions not generating profit and producing significant cash flow could be in peril.The trouble is, the company has only one profitable business segment: Garena. The video-game publisher made US$2.5 billion in operating profit in 2021. That division has helped to prop up Sea’s unprofitable e-commerce and fintech businesses. Those two divisions, by comparison, made operating losses of US$2.76 billion and US$640 million in 2021, respectively.The question is whether Sea really needs to be that brutal with its restructuring. After all, it still had US$10.2 billion of cash on its balance sheet at the end of its 2021 financial year. However, by the end of the third quarter in 2022, that cash pile had shrunk to US$6.2 billion. It had burned through US$4 billion in nine months. That is a lot of cash going up in smoke. It can’t afford to carry on as before.Garena, its profit engine, is stalling as fewer people are playing video games in a post-pandemic world. Additionally, an unexpected ban on its battle royale game, Free Fire, in India, which is one of its fastest-growing markets, has put a pause on growth.Consequently, Sea has set out a clear strategy to forestall the coming financial storm by shifting away from expansion into consolidation mode. Investors will expect more out of this South-east Asia tech darling, the world’s best-performing stock in 2020, given its maturity relative to younger peers like Grab and Gojek, which listed only in the past year.The unfortunate result is the long list of casualties, hailing from the unlikeliest places like Lion City Sailors.There are many who say a recession will not arrive on Singapore’s shores in 2023 even as the city state battles a long period of inflation, high interest rates and slower growth. Last week, the firm did not disclose its “Singles Day” shopping festival sales tally for the first time, saying only that the results were in line with last year, which was its lowest ever growth.</p><p>Alibaba’s financial affiliate, Ant Group, is still undergoing a government-mandated revamp and has yet to revive plans for its public market debut after its $37 billion attempt at a dual listing was derailed at the last minute in late 2020.</p><p>Ant, which is 33% owned by Alibaba, logged a profit of 7.72 billion yuan for the quarter ending in June, down 63.2% year-on-year. This is a company that has over 10% revenue growth, a seemingly insurmountable ecosystem and moat, and now trades at only 10 times forward EV to EBITDA. In this report, we review Google&#39;s business model, revenue growth drivers, capital allocation, current valuation and big risks. We conclude with our strong opinion on investing.</p><h2><b>Overview</b>: Google&#39;s Business</h2><p>Google breaks its business down into three operating segments, and if you don&#39;t know &#34;Google Service&#34; (which is basically advertising) generates the lion&#39;s share of the revenue and basically all of the profits, as you can see in the following 10-Q excerpts.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3d76f44f1fe8f8c2ff601f6c0566d880\" tg-width=\"1027\" tg-height=\"266\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Alphabet 10-Q</span></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/620c61d0f878a918aaac248e9721af18\" tg-width=\"1027\" tg-height=\"258\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Alphabet 10-Q</span></p><p>For your information, and to be specific, Google defines its three operating segments as follows:</p><ul><li><p><b>Google Services</b>: includes products and services such as ads, Android, Chrome, hardware, Google Maps, Google Play, Search, and YouTube. Google Services generates revenues primarily from advertising; sales of apps and in-app purchases, digital content products, and hardware; and fees received for subscription-based products such as YouTube Premium and YouTube TV.</p></li><li><p><b>Google Cloud</b>: includes Google&#39;s infrastructure and platform services, collaboration tools, and other services for enterprise customers. Google Cloud generates revenues from fees received for Google Cloud Platform services, Google Workspace collaboration tools, and other enterprise services.</p></li><li><p><b>Other Bets</b>: is a combination of multiple operating segments that are not individually material. Revenues from Other Bets are generated primarily from the sale of health technology and internet services.</p></li></ul><p>And to be clear, advertising has been the main source of revenue for years.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e21f52cfb72cb2bf8696e84d76bc1e2c\" tg-width=\"1027\" tg-height=\"523\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Statista</span></p><h2>Revenue Growth and Competitive Advantages</h2><p>Google&#39;s massive revenues (see above) are expected to keep growing rapidly, as you can see in the following chart.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/61cf0d378d33a9ce4add079775bd9669\" tg-width=\"1027\" tg-height=\"289\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><p>More specifically, forward revenue estimates project a double-digit growth rate and a double-digit EBITDA growth rate. These are powerful growth rates (especially for a massive $1+ trillion company) and they are driven by the massive secular trends of digitization, cloud migration and smart device usage (which are still be in the early innings of growth).</p><p>And to give you some perspective on Google&#39;s massive ecosystem (which is basically the driver of its competitive moat versus competitors) here are a few key points to consider, by operating segment:</p><p><b>Google Services (Advertising) Segment</b>: According to IDC, Google&#39;s Android operating system is behind more than 70% of smartphones in the world, as compared to Apple iOS (AAPL) at ~27%. This is so important because, according to Wikipedia:</p><blockquote><i>&#34;Most Android devices ship with additional proprietary software pre-installed most notably Google Mobile Services which includes core apps such as Google Chrome, the digital distribution platform Google Play, and associated Google Play Services development platform.&#34;</i></blockquote><p>This gives Google a massive competitive advantage in gathering information about users that is extremely valuable to advertisers (i.e. Google&#39;s biggest operating segment).</p><p>Further, more than 90% of global searches are conducted through Google, thereby giving the company access to enormous data valuable to advertisers. Also (per StatCounter), Google&#39;s Chrome browser remains the market leader with roughly two-thirds of total market share as compared to 19% for Apple&#39;s Safari and 4% for Microsoft&#39;s Edge (MSFT). And further still, the success of Google&#39;s YouTube&#39;s continues to grow as its contributions to the top and bottom line continue to improve.</p><p><b>Google Cloud Services</b> has been growing (even faster than Google Services), and is expected to keep growing as the global digital revolution and cloud migration are still just getting started. Google has some strong advantages in this area (stemming from its many years of internal cloud development), however Google Cloud is still the number three player behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f9d49ee52b90c60c86fd969c15441f6f\" tg-width=\"468\" tg-height=\"468\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Statista</span></p><p>We expect Google Cloud to keep growing rapidly (which is a good thing) but not enough to overtake AWS or Azure (which are also growing rapidly and have a big head start on Google).</p><p><b>The Other Bets Segment</b> is constantly innovating with technology. And despite the fact that this segment is a loss leader (it makes no money) it could open massive opportunities down the road. For example, Google&#39;s autonomous vehicle technologies (i.e. Waymo) is a huge expense, but could open huge revenue opportunities many years down the road. Google&#39;s research efforts into smart homes (i.e. Nest) is another example of an expense now that could turn to profit many years down the road. Further still, the company&#39;s applications of machine learning may also expand and prove increasingly valuable.</p><h2><b>Capital Allocation and Investments</b></h2><p>Google is a high-margin and high-cash-flow business, and this allows it to do a lot of things right. For starters, the company&#39;s operating margin was recently 28% and its operating cash flow was $19.4 billion for the three months ended June 30, 2022 (also nearly 28%).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c8d7fb3e368a9614a4f2d57013b3927e\" tg-width=\"1027\" tg-height=\"514\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Alphabet 10-Q</span></p><p>With regards to long-term debt, Google has relatively very little at around $12.8 billion versus $125 billion in cash (and equivalents) on its balance sheet. The leverage ratio is very low, and to a significant extent, this isolates Google from the increasing costs of financing growth that other companies (with high debt and less cash flow) face due to rising interest rates.</p><p>Google&#39;s strong balance sheet position allows it to invest heavily in research (its R&amp;D margin as a percent of revenue is ~12.7%, truly incredible considering the size of Google&#39;s revenue). The company is also well positioned to continue its history of successful acquisitions (especially now that the market is down) such as its previous acquisitions of YouTube, DoubleClick, Android and Fitbit.</p><p>Further still, Google has continued to return cash to shareholders through buybacks ($18 billion in 2019, $31 billion in 2020, and $50 billion in 2021). And in April 2022, it authorized another $70 billion for share buybacks. And you can even make the case that Google has been setting itself up to start paying a dividend to shareholders in the future. For example, here is what Morningstar Senior Equity Analyst, Ali Mogharabi, had to say about it in a July 2022 research note:</p><blockquote><i>&#34;In late 2015, Alphabet became a holding company, with Google one of its wholly owned subsidiaries. Alphabet is also the parent company of other businesses, mostly moonshots, which are grouped into the other bets segment that includes Waymo. This structure has provided slightly more transparency to shareholders, as the company&#39;s mature cash-generating business, Google, is managed separately. In our opinion, such a move may indicate that management is considering some form of redistribution of cash generated by Google to shareholders a few years down the road.&#34;</i></blockquote><p>Overall, Google has been a prudent allocator of capital and remains in an extremely strong cash position.</p><h2>Valuation</h2><p>Google trades at around 10x forward EV to EBITDA, and this multiple could easily double given the company&#39;s strong growth (i.e. the valuation multiple is compressed).</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6cbfc8a4b4c1e8dcad3fb5cd0983fad0\" tg-width=\"963\" tg-height=\"629\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>YCharts</p><p>For perspective, here is the EV to EBITDA ratios for other companies with similarly high growth rates and strong margins.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c373ec919afaf61974374756643c03ea\" tg-width=\"1031\" tg-height=\"474\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Stock Rover</p><p>And here are other large cap companies in the technology and communication services sectors, for comparison purposes.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/17cc47e3f74612b9907d44a0961fece2\" tg-width=\"1031\" tg-height=\"476\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Stock Rover</p><p>On these metrics, Google stands out as attractive, in our view. It also has one of the highest (most bullish) analyst ratings on the street, as you can see below.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d0779504e7546fdc6881b33e61a266d\" tg-width=\"669\" tg-height=\"304\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><h2>The Big Risks</h2><p>Of course the shares of Google can still fall further, considering the macroeconomic backdrop. For example, the Federal Reserve has essentially zero regard for the damage it is doing to the stock market this year by raising rates dramatically (after all, its dual mandate is focused on employment and inflation, not stocks). And as the Fed fights inflation, rates can still go much higher, and stocks can still fall much further. In fact, Google Trends shows searches for the term &#34;recession&#34; remain elevated (perhaps suggesting ongoing negative market confidence).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3c33bb24b2eb023e2dc7dfd567ee8928\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"371\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Google Trends</p><p>Another risk is the unfriendly dual share class structure of Google that gives 51% of the voting rights to Larry Page (co-founder) and Sergey Brin (co-founder). These two can collectively make decisions that may or may not be in the best interest of shareholders.</p><p>Data privacy and censorship are a big risk to Google. On one hand, users have concerns over how their data is used and how little control they have over it. Further, concerns over censorship (including government-sanctioned censorship around the world) gives rise to additional complaints and lawsuits.</p><p>Antitrust concerns are also a risk factor. For example, companies, regulatory agencies and governments have challenged Google&#39;s biases as well as dominance (90% of global searches are conducted via Google) and this is an ongoing legal and brand risk for the company. Antitrust concerns could also limit Google&#39;s future acquisition aspirations that may arise.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>Forward-looking investors recognized the macroeconomic risks months before the fed started taking inflation seriously. For example, many high-growth stocks started selling off particularly hard well before the Fed actually started rapidly increasing interest rates. And while many of these high-growth stocks deserved to sell off hard (as their valuations soared during the 0% interest rate bubble, while their earnings remained totally non-existent), Google is not one of them.</p><p>Rather, Google is a good example of a high-quality growth stock (with tremendous growth trajectory, a strong balance sheet, and powerful cash flows) that has been indiscriminately caught up in the recent growth-stock sell-off. In fact, it is one of the four highly compelling opportunities we highlight in our new report: &#34;When the Market Pukes: Buy These 4 Stocks in Buckets.&#34; Things can still get much worse before they get better, but in the long term we expect Google shares are going dramatically higher. This is a company that has over 10% revenue growth, a seemingly insurmountable ecosystem and moat, and now trades at only 10 times forward EV to EBITDA. In this report, we review Google's business model, revenue growth drivers, capital allocation, current valuation and big risks. We conclude with our strong opinion on investing.Overview: Google's BusinessGoogle breaks its business down into three operating segments, and if you don't know \"Google Service\" (which is basically advertising) generates the lion's share of the revenue and basically all of the profits, as you can see in the following 10-Q excerpts.Alphabet 10-QAlphabet 10-QFor your information, and to be specific, Google defines its three operating segments as follows:Google Services: includes products and services such as ads, Android, Chrome, hardware, Google Maps, Google Play, Search, and YouTube. Google Services generates revenues primarily from advertising; sales of apps and in-app purchases, digital content products, and hardware; and fees received for subscription-based products such as YouTube Premium and YouTube TV.Google Cloud: includes Google's infrastructure and platform services, collaboration tools, and other services for enterprise customers. Google Cloud generates revenues from fees received for Google Cloud Platform services, Google Workspace collaboration tools, and other enterprise services.Other Bets: is a combination of multiple operating segments that are not individually material. Revenues from Other Bets are generated primarily from the sale of health technology and internet services.And to be clear, advertising has been the main source of revenue for years.StatistaRevenue Growth and Competitive AdvantagesGoogle's massive revenues (see above) are expected to keep growing rapidly, as you can see in the following chart.Seeking AlphaMore specifically, forward revenue estimates project a double-digit growth rate and a double-digit EBITDA growth rate. These are powerful growth rates (especially for a massive $1+ trillion company) and they are driven by the massive secular trends of digitization, cloud migration and smart device usage (which are still be in the early innings of growth).And to give you some perspective on Google's massive ecosystem (which is basically the driver of its competitive moat versus competitors) here are a few key points to consider, by operating segment:Google Services (Advertising) Segment: According to IDC, Google's Android operating system is behind more than 70% of smartphones in the world, as compared to Apple iOS (AAPL) at ~27%. This is so important because, according to Wikipedia:\"Most Android devices ship with additional proprietary software pre-installed most notably Google Mobile Services which includes core apps such as Google Chrome, the digital distribution platform Google Play, and associated Google Play Services development platform.\"This gives Google a massive competitive advantage in gathering information about users that is extremely valuable to advertisers (i.e. Google's biggest operating segment).Further, more than 90% of global searches are conducted through Google, thereby giving the company access to enormous data valuable to advertisers. Also (per StatCounter), Google's Chrome browser remains the market leader with roughly two-thirds of total market share as compared to 19% for Apple's Safari and 4% for Microsoft's Edge (MSFT). And further still, the success of Google's YouTube's continues to grow as its contributions to the top and bottom line continue to improve.Google Cloud Services has been growing (even faster than Google Services), and is expected to keep growing as the global digital revolution and cloud migration are still just getting started. Google has some strong advantages in this area (stemming from its many years of internal cloud development), however Google Cloud is still the number three player behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.StatistaWe expect Google Cloud to keep growing rapidly (which is a good thing) but not enough to overtake AWS or Azure (which are also growing rapidly and have a big head start on Google).The Other Bets Segment is constantly innovating with technology. And despite the fact that this segment is a loss leader (it makes no money) it could open massive opportunities down the road. For example, Google's autonomous vehicle technologies (i.e. Waymo) is a huge expense, but could open huge revenue opportunities many years down the road. Google's research efforts into smart homes (i.e. Nest) is another example of an expense now that could turn to profit many years down the road. Further still, the company's applications of machine learning may also expand and prove increasingly valuable.Capital Allocation and InvestmentsGoogle is a high-margin and high-cash-flow business, and this allows it to do a lot of things right. For starters, the company's operating margin was recently 28% and its operating cash flow was $19.4 billion for the three months ended June 30, 2022 (also nearly 28%).Alphabet 10-QWith regards to long-term debt, Google has relatively very little at around $12.8 billion versus $125 billion in cash (and equivalents) on its balance sheet. The leverage ratio is very low, and to a significant extent, this isolates Google from the increasing costs of financing growth that other companies (with high debt and less cash flow) face due to rising interest rates.Google's strong balance sheet position allows it to invest heavily in research (its R&D margin as a percent of revenue is ~12.7%, truly incredible considering the size of Google's revenue). The company is also well positioned to continue its history of successful acquisitions (especially now that the market is down) such as its previous acquisitions of YouTube, DoubleClick, Android and Fitbit.Further still, Google has continued to return cash to shareholders through buybacks ($18 billion in 2019, $31 billion in 2020, and $50 billion in 2021). And in April 2022, it authorized another $70 billion for share buybacks. And you can even make the case that Google has been setting itself up to start paying a dividend to shareholders in the future. For example, here is what Morningstar Senior Equity Analyst, Ali Mogharabi, had to say about it in a July 2022 research note:\"In late 2015, Alphabet became a holding company, with Google one of its wholly owned subsidiaries. Alphabet is also the parent company of other businesses, mostly moonshots, which are grouped into the other bets segment that includes Waymo. This structure has provided slightly more transparency to shareholders, as the company's mature cash-generating business, Google, is managed separately. In our opinion, such a move may indicate that management is considering some form of redistribution of cash generated by Google to shareholders a few years down the road.\"Overall, Google has been a prudent allocator of capital and remains in an extremely strong cash position.ValuationGoogle trades at around 10x forward EV to EBITDA, and this multiple could easily double given the company's strong growth (i.e. the valuation multiple is compressed).YChartsFor perspective, here is the EV to EBITDA ratios for other companies with similarly high growth rates and strong margins.Stock RoverAnd here are other large cap companies in the technology and communication services sectors, for comparison purposes.Stock RoverOn these metrics, Google stands out as attractive, in our view. It also has one of the highest (most bullish) analyst ratings on the street, as you can see below.Seeking AlphaThe Big RisksOf course the shares of Google can still fall further, considering the macroeconomic backdrop. For example, the Federal Reserve has essentially zero regard for the damage it is doing to the stock market this year by raising rates dramatically (after all, its dual mandate is focused on employment and inflation, not stocks). And as the Fed fights inflation, rates can still go much higher, and stocks can still fall much further. In fact, Google Trends shows searches for the term \"recession\" remain elevated (perhaps suggesting ongoing negative market confidence).Google TrendsAnother risk is the unfriendly dual share class structure of Google that gives 51% of the voting rights to Larry Page (co-founder) and Sergey Brin (co-founder). These two can collectively make decisions that may or may not be in the best interest of shareholders.Data privacy and censorship are a big risk to Google. On one hand, users have concerns over how their data is used and how little control they have over it. Further, concerns over censorship (including government-sanctioned censorship around the world) gives rise to additional complaints and lawsuits.Antitrust concerns are also a risk factor. For example, companies, regulatory agencies and governments have challenged Google's biases as well as dominance (90% of global searches are conducted via Google) and this is an ongoing legal and brand risk for the company. Antitrust concerns could also limit Google's future acquisition aspirations that may arise.ConclusionForward-looking investors recognized the macroeconomic risks months before the fed started taking inflation seriously. For example, many high-growth stocks started selling off particularly hard well before the Fed actually started rapidly increasing interest rates. And while many of these high-growth stocks deserved to sell off hard (as their valuations soared during the 0% interest rate bubble, while their earnings remained totally non-existent), Google is not one of them.Rather, Google is a good example of a high-quality growth stock (with tremendous growth trajectory, a strong balance sheet, and powerful cash flows) that has been indiscriminately caught up in the recent growth-stock sell-off. In fact, it is one of the four highly compelling opportunities we highlight in our new report: \"When the Market Pukes: Buy These 4 Stocks in Buckets.\" Things can still get much worse before they get better, but in the long term we expect Google shares are going dramatically higher.
