Some of the questions that came up in Saturday's livestream dealt with moves Berkshire made during the early stages of the pandemic last year -- including what led the company to exit most of its banking positions while loading up onBank of America(NYSE:BAC). After months of speculation, Buffett gave a little bit of insight into what drove his decision making.
\n
Too much exposure
\n
Prior to the pandemic, Berkshire owned a slate of bank stocks, and Buffett seemed to have a bullish stance toward the sector. However, as stay-at-home orders and economic shutdowns spread across the country and banks braced for heavy loan losses, Buffett seemed to do a 180 and exited many of his holdings.
\n
Berkshire eliminated its stake in investment bankGoldman Sachs and eventuallyJPMorgan Chase, America's largest bank by assets. Berkshire also sold its position in regional banks likePNC Financial Services Group andM&T Bank. And Buffett appears to be looking for an exit on former favoriteWells Fargo, selling shares gradually for the past several quarters.
\n
While all of this was going on, Buffett and Berkshire pumped more than $2 billion of stock into Bank of America and increased the company's stake to 11.9% of outstanding shares, a move that required special regulatory approval.
\n

\n
\n
While we don't yet know what moves Buffett has made in 2021, he doesn't appear to have done much, since the cost basis of Berkshire's bank, insurance, and finance stocks after the first quarter was just slightly higher than it was at the end of 2020.
\n
During the Q&A part of Berkshire's shareholder meeting, Buffett was asked why he had sold most of his bank stocks last year.
\n
\"I like banks generally, I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten,\" Buffett said. \"We overall didn't want as much in banks as we had.\"
\n
The Oracle of Omaha added: \"The banking business is way better than it was in the United States 10 or 15 years ago. The banking business around the world -- in various places -- might worry me. But our banks are in far, far better shape than 10 or 15 years ago. But when things froze for a short period of time, the biggest thing the banks had going for them was that the Federal Reserve was behind them, and the Federal Reserve is not behind Berkshire. It's up to us take care of ourselves.\"
\n
What to make of this
\n
Buffett is one of the greatest investing minds of all time, if not No. 1, so it's important to realize that it will be difficult for us to see these moves exactly as he does. And I can certainly appreciate his remark about having too much exposure. Keep in mind, Buffett is managing an equities portfolio of hundreds of billions of dollars, so a few percentage points one way or the other is huge. He needs to think about safety much more than your standard responsible investor (Buffett sometimes refers to himself as Berkshire's \"chief risk officer,\" and he did so again on Saturday). But it really is difficult for me to understand all these moves.
\n
Goldman Sachs is not very loan-heavy, so it didn't really face the same degree of risk as other large banks like Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase. Investment banks also tend to do better in periods of volatility, and Goldman is working to build up its consumerbankand asset and wealth management divisions to generate steadier revenues. Goldman's stock is nearly 40% higher than it was prior to the pandemic, and many thinkit's still trading cheap.
\n
Buffett's decision to load up on Bank of America and dump JPMorgan as an even bigger mystery to me. JPMorgan not only has a more diversified business, but its earnings power is greater, as well. The bank is also extremely safe. Its reserves for loan losses peaked at $34 billion during 2020, but the bank was prepared for scenarios where its reserves would have peaked at $52 billion. JPMorgan also engineered its way through the Great Recession better than any of the largest banks in America. Buffett officially eliminated Berkshire's stake in JPMorgan in the fourth quarter of the year. Meanwhile, the stock is up nearly 21% year to date at Tuesday's prices, and Buffett likely missed out on even more appreciation, considering he sold the bulk of his JPMorgan position in the third quarter of 2020.
\n
Hindsight is, of course, 20/20, but the numbers are also the numbers, and Buffett missed out on huge gains on his former bank holdings that could just be getting started. Banks are potentially poised for a strong multiyear run, with earnings expected to jump in a rising-rate environment. Buffett did say Saturday that he is concerned about \"very substantial inflation,\" so maybe he thinks too much inflation may kill loan demand, or that rising rates might reveal bad credit quality. However, cyclical stocks like banks and financials tend to perform better during inflation than high-growth tech stocks, which Berkshire has recently made abigger part of its portfoliothan financials.
\n
Is Buffett done with banking?
\n
Buffett has not abandoned the sector altogether. Bank of America is still Berkshire's second-largest holding behindApple. Berkshire also still has large positions inAmerican Express, U.S. Bancorp, andBank of New York Mellon. Buffett also may not be pulling all the strings here -- he's ceded a lot of Berkshire's investing authority to others who may be making the decisions. It has long been known that two of Buffett's lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, are much more involved in Berkshire's portfolio decisions now. In addition, Berkshire recently confirmed that Berkshire's Vice Chairman Greg Abel isexpected to succeed Buffettas CEO when he eventually steps aside.
\n
But with all that has recently happened, it does seem like it could be a while until we see Berkshire buy traditional bank stocks again.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Here's How Warren Buffett Explained Berkshire Hathaway's Bank Selloff
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHere's How Warren Buffett Explained Berkshire Hathaway's Bank Selloff\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-05 10:14 GMT+8 The motley fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Berkshire Hathaway's(NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B)annual shareholder meeting and its marathon question-and-answer session have once again come and gone, offering investors another glimpse into the ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BRK.B":"伯克希尔B","BRK.A":"伯克希尔"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/05/04/heres-how-warren-buffett-explained-berkshire-hatha/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1132504423","content_text":"Berkshire Hathaway's(NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B)annual shareholder meeting and its marathon question-and-answer session have once again come and gone, offering investors another glimpse into the extraordinary mind of legendary investor Warren Buffett. It’s other people’s iPhones.\nThe product represents a new frontier for Apple: using its install base of over 1 billion iPhones as infrastructure to build services that its competitors can’t.\n\nOn Tuesday,Appleannounceda long-awaited gadget called AirTag. Users can attach the $29 coin-sized device to valuables like keys or a backpack, then locate it on a live map inside Apple’s built-in Find My software.\nAirTag competes with a number of other products on the market, including from Tile, whose general counsel complained before Congress on Wednesday about Apple’s overall dominance.\nBut AirTag’s most important differentiating feature isn’t the technology inside the $29 coin-sized stainless steel gadget. It’s other people’s iPhones.\nAirTag doesn’t have a GPS signal, which would rapidly drain its battery and raise privacy questions. Instead, when it’s attached to a lost object, it sends out scrambled Bluetooth signals. For those signals to reach the reach the internet and inform the person who’s looking for their lost device, they’ll need to find an iPhone that’s listening for them.\n″Using Bluetooth and the hundreds of millions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices in active use around the world, the user can locate a missing device even if it can’t connect to a Wi-Fi or cellular network,” Apple explained ina security disclosure about the Find My service. “Any iOS, iPadOS, or macOS device with ‘offline finding’ enabled in Find My settings can act as a ’finder device.”\nThe product represents a new frontier for Apple: Using its install base ofover 1 billion iPhonesas infrastructure to build services that its competitors can’t. Now iPhones are part of a physical network out in the world that’s looking out for stolen goods — even if their users have never purchased an AirTag.\n“The bottom line is AirTag is an example of Apple leveraging its ecosystem to create a more compelling product than what is currently in the market,” Loup Ventures founder Gene Munster wrote in a newsletter on Tuesday. “Specifically, AirTag will have better navigation and discovery features, along with a billion-plus device network that can be utilized to help locate lost items.”\nEnrolling in the Find My network does have benefits to iPhone users who don’t buy AirTags. Many users sign up because the same app can be used to find lost Apple products, and it’s easy to do when signing into an iCloud account on an iPhone.\nThe Find My network can be used to find an iPhone after it’s been shut off, as thieves often do after stealing a phone. (If the device is on, it can be contacted through Find My iPhone, a similar service that uses the device’s internet connection and predates the Find My network.)\nUsers can also opt out of the Find My network in Apple’s settings, although that means they don’t get the benefits of the network, like finding devices that have been turned off or aren’t connected to cellular or Bluetooth. (To do so, go to Settings > Your Name > Find My > Find My iPhone > and then toggle “Find My network” on or off.)\nA vast, global network\nThe number of devices participating in the network is crucial for a product like AirTag.\nApple describes its Find My service as a “vast, global network” and allows third-party accessory makers to release products that use it, too.\nIf an AirTag is lost in the middle of a desert with no Apple devices in Bluetooth range, it can’t connect to the internet to send signals or update the user’s map. But in the middle of an American city, where anestimated42% of people have iPhones — more in some areas — you’re much more likely to find a device that’s looking for your lost AirTag.\nApple CEO Tim Cook has previously described Apple’s product strategy as “only Apple,” suggesting that because the company builds hardware, develops software, and runs its own online services, it can introduce features that rivals likeMicrosoft,Google, or Samsung can’t.\nWhile Samsung or other major smartphone vendors have similar numbers of phones in people’s hands, they don’t control the underlying operating system, making features like Find My much more difficult to implement widely at once.\nFor Apple, AirTag is probably an effort to add distinguishing features to its iPhone to discourage current users from switching to an Android device. It’s not likely to be a major revenue driver.\n“While the Airtags are incremental to our model we do not believe even a very successful launch of that product will have much impact on our forecasts given the low $29 price point,” Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall wrote in a note on Tuesday.\nIf Apple becomes more skilled at using its installed devices as privacy-sensitive infrastructure, it could represent a durable advantage for the company. Apple’s installed base of iPhones could become especially important as it invests heavily in augmented reality, a technology that merges the physical and digital worlds.\nA network of location-aware iPhones could be used in augmented reality apps like Pokemon Go, for example, to identify where other players are competing and start a group experience. It provides the sensors and internet connection needed building for digital experiences in the real world without building new equipment each time.\nThe privacy angle\nAirTag also represents a major test for Apple’s privacy positioning.\nSince 2015, Apple has advertised privacy and security as major differentiators for its iPhone. It has consistently built systems, like Covid-tracking exposure notifications, that are decentralized, which means that they are designed in a way that data is processed and calculated on a device, instead of on servers that Apple can access.\nApple is building on that reputation to assure customers that its Find My system won’t leak user location or data when acting as a finding device. Apple says that the Find My network keeps location data private and anonymous, and that it doesn’t store location data or history.\nHow Apple pulls it off is a matter of complicated software engineering. “Find My is built on a foundation of advanced public key cryptography,” Apple’ssecurity disclosure says.\nNow Apple’s users will need to decide whether they understand and trust the Find My network and Apple — both as users of them, and as iPhone users participating in them to make them work better.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":373,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371969437,"gmtCreate":1618902743129,"gmtModify":1704716611036,"author":{"id":"3581991712970758","authorId":"3581991712970758","name":"Renee_SL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2a8bbcf37a0eb46ff9a9ff28c3bcc7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581991712970758","authorIdStr":"3581991712970758"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","listText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","text":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/371969437","repostId":"324196626","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":324196626,"gmtCreate":1615971705365,"gmtModify":1704789094440,"author":{"id":"3566813650220385","authorId":"3566813650220385","name":"哇干打","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/26cf19e0d0467441d0fd7d536d722d05","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3566813650220385","authorIdStr":"3566813650220385"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$Hold or Sell ? ?","listText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$Hold or Sell ? ?","text":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$Hold or Sell ? ?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/285c78c57d467a687d8c9ba3abbdee31","width":"1125","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/324196626","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":0,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":382,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371931201,"gmtCreate":1618900153503,"gmtModify":1704716571667,"author":{"id":"3581991712970758","authorId":"3581991712970758","name":"Renee_SL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2a8bbcf37a0eb46ff9a9ff28c3bcc7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581991712970758","authorIdStr":"3581991712970758"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"nice! buy","listText":"nice! buy","text":"nice! buy","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/371931201","repostId":"1149811397","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1149811397","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1618893361,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1149811397?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-20 12:36","market":"us","language":"en","title":"The Market Has Been Forgiving for Way Too Long","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1149811397","media":"The Street","summary":"At some point, the momentum and frothy traders will return, but the current action should be a solid","content":"
At some point, the momentum and frothy traders will return, but the current action should be a solid lesson.

Stocks quotes in this article:DFLYF

If you haven't realized it already, the recent shift of the market will put convictions to test. Remember that small-cap or momentum stock you loved a few weeks ago? Do you love it more down 20% or 30% or are you hitting eject?

We feel like we're trapped in a death by a thousand papercuts trading environment. While indexes are near highs, my momentum watchlists have bled lower a considerable amount. This is when a question of conviction comes into play. Do you not only know what you own but why you own it?

The market has been forgiving for way too long. When you can get bailed out of a bad purchase simply because everything else rallied around it, you develop bad habits. You buy tickers instead of companies. That's fine when you are trading, not so much if you're holding.

I know I'm getting beat up on many of my small and midcap holdings, but I'm not losing sleep over it. Do I get a bit annoyed watching the bleed? Of course. That's natural. But I won't pull the plug unless the story changes. Much of that revolves around the market as a whole. Most of my small picks that are getting beat up are just a half-dozen of thousands that have gotten slammed. They aren't down because something in their business misfired. They are lower because the risk appetite for the market has shifted away from entire sectors and market cap sizes.

It's possible I'll add as we continue to fall. Fortunately, I haven't leveraged anything to own the names. Could I watch them go to zero and not have my life altered? Yes and no. Financially, I could still pay my bills and continue my same lifestyle. Emotionally, I'll kick myself if I ride anything to zero. That means I missed a change in the story, or worse, ignored it.

However, when I look at a small name like Draganfly (DFLYF) , a company that reported earnings over the weekend, I see they grew revenues over 200%, hit the target range of their forecasts, have a run rate that points to another 200%-300% revenue gains for 2021, and continues to execute. Despite this, shares have been cut in half over the past six weeks. Nothing changed in terms of the story or the financial models, so I'm only a seller here if technicals are my driving factors. Rarely, if ever, do I let technicals drive the bus for a small or microcap stock that I plan to hold for months or years.

At some point, the momentum and frothy traders will return, but the current action should be a solid lesson. Do you not only know what you own but why you own it?The market has been forgiving for way too long. When you can get bailed out of a bad purchase simply because everything else rallied around it, you develop bad habits. You buy tickers instead of companies. That's fine when you are trading, not so much if you're holding.I know I'm getting beat up on many of my small and midcap holdings, but I'm not losing sleep over it. That means I missed a change in the story, or worse, ignored it.However, when I look at a small name like Draganfly (DFLYF) , a company that reported earnings over the weekend, I see they grew revenues over 200%, hit the target range of their forecasts, have a run rate that points to another 200%-300% revenue gains for 2021, and continues to execute. You'll likely need itchy trigger fingers on the sell side. If you're going to buy names without a disciplined stop, then make sure you're buying stories you believe in and you follow those stories closely. When they change, you need to be ready to bail and if the stocks get unfairly beaten, then you should be ready to add.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":378,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371931326,"gmtCreate":1618900104265,"gmtModify":1704716571017,"author":{"id":"3581991712970758","authorId":"3581991712970758","name":"Renee_SL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2a8bbcf37a0eb46ff9a9ff28c3bcc7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581991712970758","authorIdStr":"3581991712970758"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment done","listText":"comment done","text":"comment done","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/371931326","repostId":"2128689062","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2128689062","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1618862511,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2128689062?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-20 04:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street slips off record highs, Tesla drops after fatal crash","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2128689062","media":"Reuters","summary":"Tesla falls after fatal crash, bitcoin slumpsGameStop shares jump as CEO exitsCoca-Cola rises as revenue beats estimates. And, once again, major market indices are at all-time highs — making these earnings reports to watch even more enticing.

It’s deja vu all over again, as the saying goes. For most of the past 11 years, stocks have kept rising, and earnings reports have been good enough to keep the rallies intact.

At the moment, this market doesn’t look much different. Big banks kicked off earnings season last week with a slew of strong reports. The economy is in better shape than might be expected at this point. Despite selloffs in a few ‘hot’ sectors, and another brief bout of interest rate worries, investor sentiment too remains positive.

Basically, corporate earnings just need to keep the party going. In takeaway, the return to normalcy no doubt is providing some help — but how much?

Coke earnings should give some color on both sides of the business — and not just for Coke, but its rivals and peers.

It’s an important release for Coca-Cola itself. KO stock still hasn’t clawed back all of the losses it suffered in February and March of last year. Shares in fact are more than 10% off their all-time highs.

That creates an obvious opportunity. A Coca-Cola that is back to normal should lead to a KO stock that too is back to normal. Add in a dividend yield over 3% and investors would see double-digit returns. If Coca-Cola convinces investors that normalcy is just around the corner, those returns may arrive relatively quickly.

IBM (IBM)

Earnings Report Date: Monday, April 19, after market close

Every earnings report is key for IBM. The company is in the midst of a multi-year turnaround which still hasn’t gained real traction.

Shares still are down more than one-third from 2013 highs in a market where tech stocks have soared. IBM saw revenue decline for22-consecutive quartersbefore breaking the streak in the fourth quarter of 2017. The top lineturned south againbefore the acquisition ofRed Hatadded inorganic growth.

But now Red Hat should be integrated, and bulls see IBM’s cloud business as a potential growth driver. That optimism was enough to push IBM stock to a 52-week high late last month before a recent, modest pullback.

After the really, expectations certainly aren’t sky-high, but the market no doubt is expecting progress. Anything less, and the “same old IBM” narrative likely follows earnings this week. It’s hard to see how that narrative leads to another round of new highs.

Earnings Reports to Watch: Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)

Earnings Report Date: Tuesday, April 20, before market open

The market quickly looked pastthe pause in J&J’s Covid-19 vaccineannounced last week. After opening down 3% on Tuesday morning, JNJ stock now is essentially flat for the week.

There no doubt will be some analyst questions on the first quarter conference call about the vaccine. But investor attention likely will focus on the rest of the business, given J&Jisn’t making much profiton the vaccine.

And there are real questions to be answered. J&J’s medical device business struggled in 2020, with revenue down more than 10% amid lower elective surgeries. A rebound there could signal a bottom and lift other stocks with similar exposure. The same is true for the skin health and beauty businesses within J&J’s consumer products segment.

And of course the pharmaceutical remains J&J’s largest, at about 60% of revenue. Products like Stelara and Remicade are far more important to the company’s bottom line than is the Covid-19 vaccine.

With normalcy returning here in 2021, J&J does seem set up for a good quarter. And that could boost optimism toward a long-term casethat remains attractive.

Procter & Gamble (PG)

Earnings Report Date: Tuesday, April 20, before market open

CPG (consumer packaged goods) companies like P&G were early and obvious winners from the pandemic. A surge in supermarket revenue and consumer stockpiling led to unusually high growth.

But normalcy is returning — which isn’t necessarily great news for P&G and its industry. Toilet paper sales, for instance, have plunged this yearas many consumers still are working through purchases made last year.

Those trends set up a big fiscal third quarter release for P&G on Tuesday morning. PG stock has rallied in recent weeks after fading to an eight-month low in early March. A 23x forward price-to-earnings multiple is well above recent levels. And Q3 is the first of several quarters in which the company will face difficult, pandemic-driven, year-prior comparisons.

Particularly with PG up about 12% in six weeks, Q3 results need to be strong ahead of more difficult compares in fiscal Q4 and fiscal Q1. If they’re not, PG stock could stumble after the release — and bring other CPG stocks with it.

Earnings Reports to Watch: Netflix (NFLX)

Earnings Report Date: Tuesday, April 20, after market close

Netflix too seems like an obvious pandemic winner. Early on, NFLX stock was treated as such, as it rallied quickly off March 2020 lows and touched an all-time high in early July.

Since then, however, NFLX has been stuck. One obvious reason why is that investor attention has turned to other streaming plays such asRoku(NASDAQ:ROKU) and direct Netflix competitorsDisney(NYSE:DIS) andViacomCBS(NASDAQ:VIAC,NASDAQ:VIACA).

But earnings haven’t necessarily helped, either. NFLX stock did jump after January’s Q4 report despite a bottom-line miss, but the gains receded in a matter of weeks. Subscriber growthslowed in Q3, which the company attributed to the spike in sign-ups amid the pandemic.

With normalcy returning, earnings this week can set the 2021 narrative. A blowout quarter in the face of so much new competition establishes Netflix as the king of streaming, with other services simply fighting for second place. Any weakness, particularly in the subscriber count, might suggest that those new platforms are pulling Netflix subscribers away.

With the forward earnings multiple down to a more reasonable 43x, NFLX stock is cheap enough to break out if its dominance appears assured. And with incremental margins from additional subscribers driving the expected profit growth, it’s expensive enough to plunge if top-line momentum slows. This looks like a big quarter for NFLX stock — and big enough to move other streaming names as well.

AT&T (T)

Earnings Report Date: Thursday, April 22, before market open

One of those new Netflix competitors, of course, is AT&T. The telecommunications giant launched its HBO Max streaming service in May. Despiteclearing 60 million worldwide subscribersby the end of last year, HBO Max hasn’t done much for T stock.

Of course, nothing has done much for the stock, which actually is down 2% over the past decade. Investors have received a generally healthy dividend, which now yields 7%. But in terms of share price appreciation, AT&T stock has been the definition of ‘dead money’.

Something needs to change. It’s hard to see what that will be. HBO Max’s growth has been impressive, but the streaming business is cannibalizing revenue from DIRECTV as well as WarnerMedia’s TNT and TBS cable channels. In wireless, AT&T continues to lose share toVerizon Communications(NYSE:VZ), which reports on Wednesday morning, and a now-largerT-Mobile(NASDAQ:TMUS).

Simply put, beyond the dividend yield AT&T hasn’t given investors a good reason to own T stock. It needs to start doing so, and Thursday morning would be a fine time to start. AT&T needs to print sustainable growth either in wireless or in WarnerMedia as a whole. Of course, as the last few years show, that’s easier said than done.

Earnings Reports to Watch: Intel (INTC)

Earnings Report Date: Thursday, April 22, after market close

Earnings this week look absolutely crucial for Intel. Despite selloffs in a few ‘hot’ sectors, and another brief bout of interest rate worries, investor sentiment too remains positive.Basically, corporate earnings just need to keep the party going. “Find My is built on a foundation of advanced public key cryptography,” Apple’ssecurity disclosure says.\nNow Apple’s users will need to decide whether they understand and trust the Find My network and Apple — both as users of them, and as iPhone users participating in them to make them work better.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":373,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":102110176,"gmtCreate":1620183372795,"gmtModify":1704339874563,"author":{"id":"3581991712970758","authorId":"3581991712970758","name":"Renee_SL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2a8bbcf37a0eb46ff9a9ff28c3bcc7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581991712970758","authorIdStr":"3581991712970758"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"nice!","listText":"nice!","text":"nice!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/102110176","repostId":"1132504423","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1132504423","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1620180873,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1132504423?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-05 10:14","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Here's How Warren Buffett Explained Berkshire Hathaway's Bank Selloff","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1132504423","media":"The motley fool","summary":"Berkshire Hathaway's(NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B)annual shareholder meeting and its marathon question-and","content":"
Berkshire Hathaway's(NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B)annual shareholder meeting and its marathon question-and-answer session have once again come and gone, offering investors another glimpse into the extraordinary mind of legendary investor Warren Buffett.

It's up to us take care of ourselves.\"\nWhat to make of this\nBuffett is one of the greatest investing minds of all time, if not No. But it really is difficult for me to understand all these moves.\nGoldman Sachs is not very loan-heavy, so it didn't really face the same degree of risk as other large banks like Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase. Investment banks also tend to do better in periods of volatility, and Goldman is working to build up its consumerbankand asset and wealth management divisions to generate steadier revenues. Goldman's stock is nearly 40% higher than it was prior to the pandemic, and many thinkit's still trading cheap.\nBuffett's decision to load up on Bank of America and dump JPMorgan as an even bigger mystery to me. Meanwhile, the stock is up nearly 21% year to date at Tuesday's prices, and Buffett likely missed out on even more appreciation, considering he sold the bulk of his JPMorgan position in the third quarter of 2020.\nHindsight is, of course, 20/20, but the numbers are also the numbers, and Buffett missed out on huge gains on his former bank holdings that could just be getting started. However, cyclical stocks like banks and financials tend to perform better during inflation than high-growth tech stocks, which Berkshire has recently made abigger part of its portfoliothan financials.\nIs Buffett done with banking?\nBuffett has not abandoned the sector altogether. In addition, Berkshire recently confirmed that Berkshire's Vice Chairman Greg Abel isexpected to succeed Buffettas CEO when he eventually steps aside.\nBut with all that has recently happened, it does seem like it could be a while until we see Berkshire buy traditional bank stocks again.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":718,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371931326,"gmtCreate":1618900104265,"gmtModify":1704716571017,"author":{"id":"3581991712970758","authorId":"3581991712970758","name":"Renee_SL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2a8bbcf37a0eb46ff9a9ff28c3bcc7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581991712970758","authorIdStr":"3581991712970758"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"comment done","listText":"comment done","text":"comment done","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/371931326","repostId":"2128689062","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2128689062","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1618862511,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2128689062?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-20 04:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street slips off record highs, Tesla drops after fatal crash","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2128689062","media":"Reuters","summary":"Tesla falls after fatal crash, bitcoin slumpsGameStop shares jump as CEO exitsCoca-Cola rises as revenue beats estimates.

That’s particularly true over the next few weeks, as the earnings calendar features some of the world’s largest companies across the market’s biggest and most important sectors. They’re the kind of companies whose reports can move entire sectors — and, in a few cases, perhaps the entire market.

For the next few weeks, earnings reports will take center stage. For this week, these are the seven earnings reports to watch:

Coca-Cola(NYSE:KO)

IBM(NYSE:IBM)

Johnson & Johnson(NYSE:JNJ)

Procter & Gamble(NYSE:PG)

Netflix(NASDAQ:NFLX)

AT&T(NYSE:T)

Intel(NASDAQ:INTC)

Now, let’s dive in and take a closer look at each one.

Earnings Reports to Watch: Coca-Cola (KO)

Earnings Report Date: Monday, April 19, before market open

In an uncertain environment, the broad reach of the world’s largest beverage company makes earnings this week important for almost every investor.

After all, both of the company’s channels are in uncharted waters. In supermarkets, the question is how food and beverage companies will fare against the enormously difficult comparisons of last year’s first quarter, and March specifically.

INTC plunged after back-to-back earnings reports last year amidyet another stumblein its move to the 7nm node. News in December thatApple(NASDAQ:AAPL) andMicrosoft(NASDAQ:MSFT) weredeveloping their own chipsended a relief rally and sent the stock back to the lows.

Yet earlier this month INTC threatened its highest level since a brief 2000 peak amid the dot-com bubble. A better-than-expected Q4 release in January certainly helped. But the chip shortage has proved a catalyst as well. And, once again, major market indices are at all-time highs — making these earnings reports to watch even more enticing.It’s deja vu all over again, as the saying goes. For most of the past 11 years, stocks have kept rising, and earnings reports have been good enough to keep the rallies intact.At the moment, this market doesn’t look much different. Big banks kicked off earnings season last week with a slew of strong reports. The economy is in better shape than might be expected at this point. Despite selloffs in a few ‘hot’ sectors, and another brief bout of interest rate worries, investor sentiment too remains positive.Basically, corporate earnings just need to keep the party going. That’s particularly true over the next few weeks, as the earnings calendar features some of the world’s largest companies across the market’s biggest and most important sectors. They’re the kind of companies whose reports can move entire sectors — and, in a few cases, perhaps the entire market.For the next few weeks, earnings reports will take center stage. For this week, these are the seven earnings reports to watch:Coca-Cola(NYSE:KO)IBM(NYSE:IBM)Johnson & Johnson(NYSE:JNJ)Procter & Gamble(NYSE:PG)Netflix(NASDAQ:NFLX)AT&T(NYSE:T)Intel(NASDAQ:INTC)Now, let’s dive in and take a closer look at each one.Earnings Reports to Watch: Coca-Cola (KO)Earnings Report Date: Monday, April 19, before market openIn an uncertain environment, the broad reach of the world’s largest beverage company makes earnings this week important for almost every investor.After all, both of the company’s channels are in uncharted waters. In supermarkets, the question is how food and beverage companies will fare against the enormously difficult comparisons of last year’s first quarter, and March specifically. In takeaway, the return to normalcy no doubt is providing some help — but how much?Coke earnings should give some color on both sides of the business — and not just for Coke, but its rivals and peers.It’s an important release for Coca-Cola itself. KO stock still hasn’t clawed back all of the losses it suffered in February and March of last year. Shares in fact are more than 10% off their all-time highs.That creates an obvious opportunity. A Coca-Cola that is back to normal should lead to a KO stock that too is back to normal. Add in a dividend yield over 3% and investors would see double-digit returns. If Coca-Cola convinces investors that normalcy is just around the corner, those returns may arrive relatively quickly.IBM (IBM)Earnings Report Date: Monday, April 19, after market closeEvery earnings report is key for IBM. The company is in the midst of a multi-year turnaround which still hasn’t gained real traction.Shares still are down more than one-third from 2013 highs in a market where tech stocks have soared. IBM saw revenue decline for22-consecutive quartersbefore breaking the streak in the fourth quarter of 2017. The top lineturned south againbefore the acquisition ofRed Hatadded inorganic growth.But now Red Hat should be integrated, and bulls see IBM’s cloud business as a potential growth driver. That optimism was enough to push IBM stock to a 52-week high late last month before a recent, modest pullback.After the really, expectations certainly aren’t sky-high, but the market no doubt is expecting progress. Anything less, and the “same old IBM” narrative likely follows earnings this week. It’s hard to see how that narrative leads to another round of new highs.Earnings Reports to Watch: Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)Earnings Report Date: Tuesday, April 20, before market openThe market quickly looked pastthe pause in J&J’s Covid-19 vaccineannounced last week. After opening down 3% on Tuesday morning, JNJ stock now is essentially flat for the week.There no doubt will be some analyst questions on the first quarter conference call about the vaccine. But investor attention likely will focus on the rest of the business, given J&Jisn’t making much profiton the vaccine.And there are real questions to be answered. J&J’s medical device business struggled in 2020, with revenue down more than 10% amid lower elective surgeries. A rebound there could signal a bottom and lift other stocks with similar exposure. The same is true for the skin health and beauty businesses within J&J’s consumer products segment.And of course the pharmaceutical remains J&J’s largest, at about 60% of revenue. Products like Stelara and Remicade are far more important to the company’s bottom line than is the Covid-19 vaccine.With normalcy returning here in 2021, J&J does seem set up for a good quarter. And that could boost optimism toward a long-term casethat remains attractive.Procter & Gamble (PG)Earnings Report Date: Tuesday, April 20, before market openCPG (consumer packaged goods) companies like P&G were early and obvious winners from the pandemic. A surge in supermarket revenue and consumer stockpiling led to unusually high growth.But normalcy is returning — which isn’t necessarily great news for P&G and its industry. Toilet paper sales, for instance,have plunged this yearas many consumers still are working through purchases made last year.Those trends set up a big fiscal third quarter release for P&G on Tuesday morning. PG stock has rallied in recent weeks after fading to an eight-month low in early March. A 23x forward price-to-earnings multiple is well above recent levels. And Q3 is the first of several quarters in which the company will face difficult, pandemic-driven, year-prior comparisons.Particularly with PG up about 12% in six weeks, Q3 results need to be strong ahead of more difficult compares in fiscal Q4 and fiscal Q1. If they’re not, PG stock could stumble after the release — and bring other CPG stocks with it.Earnings Reports to Watch: Netflix (NFLX)Earnings Report Date: Tuesday, April 20, after market closeNetflix too seems like an obvious pandemic winner. Early on, NFLX stock was treated as such, as it rallied quickly off March 2020 lows and touched an all-time high in early July.Since then, however, NFLX has been stuck. One obvious reason why is that investor attention has turned to other streaming plays such asRoku(NASDAQ:ROKU) and direct Netflix competitorsDisney(NYSE:DIS) andViacomCBS(NASDAQ:VIAC,NASDAQ:VIACA).But earnings haven’t necessarily helped, either. NFLX stock did jump after January’s Q4 report despite a bottom-line miss, but the gains receded in a matter of weeks. Subscriber growthslowed in Q3, which the company attributed to the spike in sign-ups amid the pandemic.With normalcy returning, earnings this week can set the 2021 narrative. A blowout quarter in the face of so much new competition establishes Netflix as the king of streaming, with other services simply fighting for second place. Any weakness, particularly in the subscriber count, might suggest that those new platforms are pulling Netflix subscribers away.With the forward earnings multiple down to a more reasonable 43x, NFLX stock is cheap enough to break out if its dominance appears assured. And with incremental margins from additional subscribers driving the expected profit growth, it’s expensive enough to plunge if top-line momentum slows. This looks like a big quarter for NFLX stock — and big enough to move other streaming names as well.AT&T (T)Earnings Report Date: Thursday, April 22, before market openOne of those new Netflix competitors, of course, is AT&T. The telecommunications giant launched its HBO Max streaming service in May. Despiteclearing 60 million worldwide subscribersby the end of last year, HBO Max hasn’t done much for T stock.Of course, nothing has done much for the stock, which actually is down 2% over the past decade. Investors have received a generally healthy dividend, which now yields 7%. But in terms of share price appreciation, AT&T stock has been the definition of ‘dead money’.Something needs to change. It’s hard to see what that will be. HBO Max’s growth has been impressive, but the streaming business is cannibalizing revenue from DIRECTV as well as WarnerMedia’s TNT and TBS cable channels. In wireless, AT&T continues to lose share toVerizon Communications(NYSE:VZ), which reports on Wednesday morning, and a now-largerT-Mobile(NASDAQ:TMUS).Simply put, beyond the dividend yield AT&T hasn’t given investors a good reason to own T stock. It needs to start doing so, and Thursday morning would be a fine time to start. AT&T needs to print sustainable growth either in wireless or in WarnerMedia as a whole. Of course, as the last few years show, that’s easier said than done.Earnings Reports to Watch: Intel (INTC)Earnings Report Date: Thursday, April 22, after market closeEarnings this week look absolutely crucial for Intel. INTC plunged after back-to-back earnings reports last year amidyet another stumblein its move to the 7nm node. News in December thatApple(NASDAQ:AAPL) andMicrosoft(NASDAQ:MSFT) weredeveloping their own chipsended a relief rally and sent the stock back to the lows.Yet earlier this month INTC threatened its highest level since a brief 2000 peak amid the dot-com bubble. A better-than-expected Q4 release in January certainly helped. But the chip shortage has proved a catalyst as well. In this environment, Intel’s owned manufacturing capacity gives it an edge over ‘fabless’ rivalsAdvanced Micro Devices(NASDAQ:AMD) andNvidia(NASDAQ:NVDA).In other words, Intel has gotten a reprieve. It’s an advantage the company absolutely must take advantage of. With INTC still trading at 14x forward earnings, the stock is cheap enough that the rally can continue if Intel doesn’t give investors a reason to sell.That might seem like a low bar to clear — but Intel’s recent history suggests otherwise.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":426,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
