That company turned out to beAlibaba Group Holding Ltd., which revolutionized online shopping in China and debuted 15 years later with the world’s largest initial public offering, yielding a 200-fold return for Tam and his partners.
\n
In contrast with his decisive bet into Alibaba, Tam has spent the better part of the past decade studying and planning for what he believes will be the transformative trend of the new century. Now, his Venturous Group is preparing to step into the limelight, raising $131 million to help bankroll China’s so-called New Infrastructure plan: amulti-trillion-dollar vision to lay the foundation for the country’s future by building everything from intelligent cities to sprawling ultra-fast networks. It’s a vastly longer-term bet than the rocket ship that was Alibaba, but Tam believes the payoff could be similar in magnitude if he plays his cards right.
\n
“Think before you act, aim before you shoot,” said the methodical 57-year-old, adding that he read 400 books and tested the waters with several personal investments in the seven years before launching his new venture.
\n
Tam’s Venturous is the product of a three-decade career during which the veteran has backed other early internet giants and helped pioneer venture investing and private equity across the world’s No. 2 economy. His journey into finance began in 1989 as an investment banker at S.G. Warburg in London. The Asia IPO boom two years later brought Tam back to his hometown of Hong Kong, where he shepherded companies going public for East Asia Warburg, followed by stints working on private equity at Hellman & Friedman Asia and Electra Partners Asia.
\n
The successful bet on Alibaba, made jointly with Fidelity Investments, led him to co-found Fidelity Growth Partners Asia in 2002, where he played a key role in growing assets 200-fold to $4 billion in just a decade. Tam’s signature investments also includeAsiaInfo Holdings, which built China’s first national broadband network and became one of the first Chinese tech listings on the Nasdaq.
\n
Tam’s early experience taught him the value of personal relationships and the Hong Kong native moved to Beijing in 2002 to befriend mainland entrepreneurs. One of his key goals in his early days as a venture capitalist was to be invited by startup founders and fellow investors to weekend parties. Even today, Tam still attends team-building activities at his investee firms. “Capital is not all about money. It’s not all about numbers. It’s ultimately about people,” Tam said.
\n
Now, his Beijing-based Venturous Group has raised $131 million from financial institutions including Fidelity as well as billionaire families in its Series A round. He’s seeking another $100 million by the end of this year to digitalize buildings, transportation and other urban facilities in China, an initiative backed by President Xi Jinping himself.
\n
Under Beijing’s infrastructure masterplan, China will invest an estimated$1.4 trillionover six years to 2025 to lay fifth generation wireless networks, install cameras and sensors, and deploy artificial intelligence technology that will enable cutting-edge solutions such as autonomous driving and internet-connected smart homes.
\n
Savio Kwan, the first chief operating officer at Alibaba, says Tam is uniquely positioned to lead China’s next tech boom. “It looks as if it is lucky to be there early. But it is not,” said Kwan, who invested $10 million into Venturous. “To be early means you’re well prepared and you’re learning from your past experience.”
\n
It was precisely a missed opportunity that transformed Tam into a better investor, according to Kwan. In 2002, when Alibaba was trying to raise a third round of $5 million, many existing backers -- Fidelity included -- took a wait-and-see approach. Kwan and several others like co-founders Jack Ma and Tsai ended up putting in $1 million of their own money to close the round, an investment that ended up generating a 40-fold return in the following two years. “That must have affected Benson in a sense that he wants to go for the long term,” Kwan says.
\n
Liu Tianwen, the founder and chief executive officer ofiSoftStone Information Technology (Group) Co., is among entrepreneurs who have benefited from Tam’s patience and unwillingness to write off troubled startups. When the software firm struggled to raise capital during the 2008 financial crisis, Tam not only doubled down on Fidelity’s investment but also helped bring in more investors. Since then, sales of Beijing-based iSoftStone have climbed to nearly 13 billion yuan ($2 billion) in 2020 and the company is set to float on China’s Nasdaq-style ChiNext board this year.
\n
“Some investors eye an immediate return, but Benson has a vision for the long run,” Liu said. It was Liu’s business that crystallized Tam’s decision to bet big on smart cities, after local mayors started flocking to iSoftStone’s headquarters for help to digitalize local services and infrastructure in 2017.
\n
“That was the aha moment,” Tam said. “We realized that something had tipped over with respect to smart city tech.”
\n
Venturous Group makes concentrated bets -- pouring nearly all the capital it’s raised so far into seven startups includingiSSTech, an iSoftStone spinoff that provides big data and cloud computing services to urban planners. It has also invested inZhuyou Hotel Group, a Chinese hotel chain dedicated to serving tech-savvy millennials.
\n
Tam sees investing as only a starting point to capture the smart city market and his ambitions extend to creating a vast ecosystem around his portfolio firms -- a move straight from the playbook of tech giants like Alibaba. Venturous Group is in advanced discussions with a British engineering conglomerate to form a joint venture in China, which will equip buildings with smart sensors and other advanced technologies, Tam said, declining to provide details.
\n
“One thing he appreciates is longevity in the value he brings,” Kwan said. “This manifests itself in his interest in wine. It's a company with real potential, with some big customers ready and waiting for its products, and with technology that's much closer to mass production than that of its most prominent rivals.
\n
What is Solid Power
\n
Colorado-based Solid Power, founded in 2012, is one of several companies working to develop so-called solid-state batteries, which omit the liquid electrolyte used in the lithium-ion batteries that power most electric vehicles today. (Among the others:QuantumScape(NYSE:QS), which drew lots of attention from investors after it went public via its own SPAC deal late last year.)
\n
Solid-state batteries have the potential to offer greater energy density than lithium-ion batteries with less weight, but a design that can be mass-produced at a reasonable cost has eluded researchers for years.
\n
That may soon change.
\n
What makes this a big deal
\n
First and foremost, Solid Power appears to be closer to mass production than its rivals. Most solid-state battery efforts are at least a few years away from production. QuantumScape, for example, ishopingtobegin pilot production of its batteriesin about three years. But Solid Power is already producing its second-generation 20 ampere-hour (Ah) battery cells on a pilot production line, and it expects to begin pilot production of its full-scale 100 Ah batteries next year.
\n
Second -- again, unlike most competitors -- Solid Power's solid-state battery cells can be manufactured with equipment and processes adapted from lithium-ion battery manufacturing, meaning that existing battery plants can be converted to build Solid Power's cells at relatively low cost.
\n
Finally, as I mentioned above, bothFord and BMW are investors in Solid Power. Both participated in the company's most recent funding round earlier this year, both expect to receive batches of those 100 Ah cells for testing in their own electric vehicles next year, and assuming those tests go well, both will be early customers for the company's mass-produced cells.
\n
What are the terms of the Solid Power SPAC deal
\n
Solid Power's deal to merge with Decarbonization Plus III follows the pattern of other SPAC deals we've seen in the electric vehicle space over the past year, in that it includes a PIPE (for \"private investment in public equity\") that allows big investors to buy stock in the merged company at an agreed-upon price, adding extra cash to the deal.
\n
Here are the key points of the deal:
\n
\n
Decarbonization Plus III is contributing the cash it holds in trust, about $350 million.
\n
The PIPE will bring another $165 million from investors includingRiverstone Energy, Koch Industries' venture-capital fund, and funds advised by Neuberger Berman and VanEck Global.
\n
Together with the $135 million that Solid Power raised in its Series B round last month, the post-merger company will have about $650 million in cash.
\n
The merged company will retain the Solid Power name and will trade on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol \"SLDP.\"
\n
The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2021.
\n
\n
What are the risks if I buy DCRC now
\n
As with any SPAC deal involving a company that hasn't yet brought its product to market, there are risks investors should keep in mind:
\n
\n
It's possible that the deal won't close, or that it'll close later than scheduled.
\n
It's possible that the company's technology won't pan out, or that it goes into production later than expected. Investors who are used to tech start-up time frames should note that the pace of progress in the battery space isglacialby comparison. Solid Power has been working on its batteries since 2012, QuantumScape since 2010.
\n
It's possible that one or more competitors will beat Solid Power to market, taking significant share.
\n
It's possible that we'll learn things about Solid Power that make it a less attractive investment. It's a company with real potential, with some big customers ready and waiting for its products, and with technology that's much closer to mass production than that of its most prominent rivals.\nWhat is Solid Power\nColorado-based Solid Power, founded in 2012, is one of several companies working to develop so-called solid-state batteries, which omit the liquid electrolyte used in the lithium-ion batteries that power most electric vehicles today. (Among the others:QuantumScape(NYSE:QS), which drew lots of attention from investors after it went public via its own SPAC deal late last year.)\nSolid-state batteries have the potential to offer greater energy density than lithium-ion batteries with less weight, but a design that can be mass-produced at a reasonable cost has eluded researchers for years.\nThat may soon change.\nWhat makes this a big deal\nFirst and foremost, Solid Power appears to be closer to mass production than its rivals. Most solid-state battery efforts are at least a few years away from production. QuantumScape, for example, ishopingtobegin pilot production of its batteriesin about three years. But Solid Power is already producing its second-generation 20 ampere-hour (Ah) battery cells on a pilot production line, and it expects to begin pilot production of its full-scale 100 Ah batteries next year.\nSecond -- again, unlike most competitors -- Solid Power's solid-state battery cells can be manufactured with equipment and processes adapted from lithium-ion battery manufacturing, meaning that existing battery plants can be converted to build Solid Power's cells at relatively low cost.\nFinally, as I mentioned above, bothFord and BMW are investors in Solid Power. Both participated in the company's most recent funding round earlier this year, both expect to receive batches of those 100 Ah cells for testing in their own electric vehicles next year, and assuming those tests go well, both will be early customers for the company's mass-produced cells.\nWhat are the terms of the Solid Power SPAC deal\nSolid Power's deal to merge with Decarbonization Plus III follows the pattern of other SPAC deals we've seen in the electric vehicle space over the past year, in that it includes a PIPE (for \"private investment in public equity\") that allows big investors to buy stock in the merged company at an agreed-upon price, adding extra cash to the deal.\nHere are the key points of the deal:\n\nDecarbonization Plus III is contributing the cash it holds in trust, about $350 million.\nThe PIPE will bring another $165 million from investors includingRiverstone Energy, Koch Industries' venture-capital fund, and funds advised by Neuberger Berman and VanEck Global.\nTogether with the $135 million that Solid Power raised in its Series B round last month, the post-merger company will have about $650 million in cash.\nThe merged company will retain the Solid Power name and will trade on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol \"SLDP.\"\nThe deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2021.\n\nWhat are the risks if I buy DCRC now\nAs with any SPAC deal involving a company that hasn't yet brought its product to market, there are risks investors should keep in mind:\n\nIt's possible that the deal won't close, or that it'll close later than scheduled.\nIt's possible that the company's technology won't pan out, or that it goes into production later than expected. Investors who are used to tech start-up time frames should note that the pace of progress in the battery space isglacialby comparison. Solid Power has been working on its batteries since 2012, QuantumScape since 2010.\nIt's possible that one or more competitors will beat Solid Power to market, taking significant share.\nIt's possible that we'll learn things about Solid Power that make it a less attractive investment. (I have no reason to think this will happen, but all SPAC investors should be mindful of the examples ofNikolaandLordstown Motors, both of which made important claims that werelater foundtohave been exaggerated.)\n\nIs DCRC a buy\nI'm not sure yet, but right now I'm leaning toward \"yes.\" Solid Power's technology is very promising, and executives at Ford think highly of the company's technology and leadership team. As with any battery start-up, the question is when (and whether) the company can bring its batteries to market -- but I think Solid Power will still have good growth potential even if production slips by a year or two.\nThat said, I'm still working through all of the company's investor materials, and I expect to have more thoughts on Solid Power's valuation and growth potential in a few days. The software provider expects to push $4 billion into capital expenditures to increase its competition with Amazon.com Inc. ,Microsoft Corp. and others.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":229,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":169694988,"gmtCreate":1623831746944,"gmtModify":1703820781710,"author":{"id":"3581995960959972","authorId":"3581995960959972","name":"geknoi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe555b915e7bd4098661657f2d471083","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581995960959972","authorIdStr":"3581995960959972"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$CAPITALAND LIMITED(C31.SI)$lack of news stagnant stock","listText":"$CAPITALAND LIMITED(C31.SI)$lack of news stagnant stock","text":"$CAPITALAND LIMITED(C31.SI)$lack of news stagnant stock","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/169694988","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":286,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":165399851,"gmtCreate":1624092783273,"gmtModify":1703828709292,"author":{"id":"3581995960959972","authorId":"3581995960959972","name":"geknoi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe555b915e7bd4098661657f2d471083","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581995960959972","authorIdStr":"3581995960959972"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Correction next week","listText":"Correction next week","text":"Correction next week","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/165399851","repostId":"1113942445","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":281,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":169697121,"gmtCreate":1623831793363,"gmtModify":1703820783664,"author":{"id":"3581995960959972","authorId":"3581995960959972","name":"geknoi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe555b915e7bd4098661657f2d471083","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581995960959972","authorIdStr":"3581995960959972"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$WILMAR INTERNATIONAL LIMITED(F34.SI)$going down steadily","listText":"$WILMAR INTERNATIONAL LIMITED(F34.SI)$going down steadily","text":"$WILMAR INTERNATIONAL LIMITED(F34.SI)$going down steadily","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/169697121","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":650,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":122218001,"gmtCreate":1624622439403,"gmtModify":1703841938456,"author":{"id":"3581995960959972","authorId":"3581995960959972","name":"geknoi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe555b915e7bd4098661657f2d471083","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581995960959972","authorIdStr":"3581995960959972"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Pullback","listText":"Pullback","text":"Pullback","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/122218001","repostId":"1108268408","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":131,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":166442021,"gmtCreate":1624023816263,"gmtModify":1703826853259,"author":{"id":"3581995960959972","authorId":"3581995960959972","name":"geknoi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe555b915e7bd4098661657f2d471083","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581995960959972","authorIdStr":"3581995960959972"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buying ","listText":"Buying ","text":"Buying","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/166442021","repostId":"1131081247","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1131081247","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1624019171,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1131081247?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-18 20:26","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"Goldman sees Fed-driven dip in commodities as a 'buying opportunity'","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1131081247","media":"Reuters","summary":"(Reuters) - That company turned out to beAlibaba Group Holding Ltd., which revolutionized online shopping in China and debuted 15 years later with the world’s largest initial public offering, yielding a 200-fold return for Tam and his partners.
It also said 40% of the company’s U.S. entries will be battery electric vehicles by the end of 2025.\nThe company had back then raised its electric and autonomous vehicle spending plan to $27 billion through 2025, up from the $20 billion planned before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.\nWhy It Matters:GM’s spending boost follows a similar move from legacy rival Ford Motor Co , which late last month said it plans to boost spending on electric vehicle development to $30 billion by 2025 under a new turnaround plan and expects 40% car sales by 2030 to be EVs.\nAutomakers across the world, including Volkswagen Ag, are setting tighter deadlines and setting aside billions of dollars for a fast switchover to a fully electric vehicle lineup, a disruption brought in and accelerated by Elon Musk-ledTesla Inc.\nPrice Action:GM shares closed 0.35 higher at $60.81 on Tuesday.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":159,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":169693899,"gmtCreate":1623831497911,"gmtModify":1703820773515,"author":{"id":"3581995960959972","authorId":"3581995960959972","name":"geknoi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe555b915e7bd4098661657f2d471083","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581995960959972","authorIdStr":"3581995960959972"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice accumulated","listText":"Nice accumulated","text":"Nice accumulated","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/169693899","repostId":"1184454883","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1184454883","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1623830812,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1184454883?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-16 16:06","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Oracle shares fell more than 4% in pre-market trading,as CEO expects to push more money to cloud efforts","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1184454883","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Oracle shares fell more than 4% in pre-market trading.\nOracleORCL,-1.19%on Tuesday reported fourth-q","content":"
Oracle shares fell more than 4% in pre-market trading.
\n
OracleORCL,-1.19%on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $4.03 billion, or $1.37 a share, on sales of $11.23 billion, up from $10.44 billion a year ago.
