That means \"bad news\" on the economy mig","content":"

Investors are suddenly worried about a potential recession. That means "bad news" on the economy might no longer be "good news" for the stock market.

Until recently, investors welcomed signs of a slowing economy, figuring it meant the Federal Reserve would soon stop raising interest rates, presumably in time to avert a recession as inflation cooled. Following last month's banking troubles, investors appear more fearful of a potential downturn, market watchers said.

The market has shifted its focus from inflation to recession this year, according to Michele Morra, portfolio manager at Moneyfarm. The recent employment data adds to the growing evidence that inflation is slowing down, "and even if taking into account a more dovish monetary policy, the main focus is recession," Morra said.

The past week's data provided fresh evidence that the U.S. central bank's tightening cycle is finally having an effect on the labor market. While the March job report was strong, as the U.S. added 236,000 jobs, there are some hints that the labor market is softening.

ADP on Wednesday said the private sector added 145,000 jobs in March, well below the 210,000 expected by economists. Jobless claims data on Thursday morning showed first-time applications for benefits last week came in higher than expected.

Investors are waiting for the March consumer price index data to be released on Wednesday and the producer price index data due Thursday.

For economic data, "we believe that slightly bad news is good, but not terrible news," said Jay Hatfield, chief executive at Infrastructure Capital Advisors. "It is good to extend the labor market weakening song, but there are fears that the economy is going to crash or crack," Hatfield said in a phone interview.

Stocks have gained so far this year, after a tough 2022. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 1% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 was up 6.9% over the same period. The Nasdaq Composite , which has been leading 2023 gains, has advanced 15.5% so far this year.

But there are doubts about the rally's sustainability.

On Thursday, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite booked their first losing week in four, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained a modest 0.6% in holiday-shortened trading. The stock market was closed Friday for the Good Friday holiday though stock index futures posted small gains in a shortened trading session following the release of the March jobs report.

"I think we're probably in a range-trading environment, while investors and companies try to make up their mind about whether they need to be defensive or not," said Andrew Bell, chief executive at Witan Investment Trust.

Market participants aren't quite sure whether the Fed is done raising rates, he said, while it's unclear whether the economy is headed for recession and whether there will be a need to "take a knife" to earnings estimates in coming weeks, Bell said, in a phone interview. First-quarter corporate earnings reporting season kicks off later this week.

For the past few weeks, the S&P 500 has been trading close to the top of its recent trading range of 3,800 to 4,200, so it's normal to have pullbacks, said Infrastructure Capital's Hatfield. However, as companies begin to report their earnings for the first quarter, it could set the S&P 500 up for a breakout above the 4,200 level, Hatfield said.

"We think most earnings will be good," Hatfield said. The U.S. economy is still relatively strong with no significant unemployment, while it would be easier for companies to beat expectations as some analysts have "gotten super bearish," Hatfield added.

Analysts cut their outlook pretty aggressively during the first quarter as the economic outlook deteriorated. Operating profits are expected to have shrunk by 6.8% last quarter, according to an average of Wall Street forecasts compiled by FactSet.

If the forecast comes true, it would mark the worst quarterly contraction for earnings since the third quarter of 2020, when corporate profits went down by more than 30%, as global lockdowns in response to Covid-19 shook up the economy.

Investors will also pay particular attention to banks, which will be among the first batches to report their earnings, as some, including JPMorgan Chase & Co. chief executive Jamie Dimon warned that the banking crisis is not over

Still, it might be too early to see the banking crisis reflected in the earnings reports for the first quarter, noted Morra.

Some are less optimistic about the upcoming earnings and the stock market performance.

"After Q4's negative 3.5% growth, we were halfway to what's called an 'earnings recession' (two consecutive quarters of negative growth), and if Q1 posts a negative result we'll have fully checked the box," according to Liz Young, head of investment strategy at SoFi.

The bear market for the S&P 500 isn't over, and new lows may lie ahead, she said.

"I still believe we could see a pullback that results in a peak-to-trough decline in the S&P of 30% or more," according to Young. It means that the stock index could reach a low of 3,357 from its peak at 4,796 on January 3, 2022.

"Since we'll have the verdict on a possible earnings recession in less two months, that would tell whether we're ripe for a market pullback to begin sooner rather than later," Young said.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Recession Threat May Mean Stock-Market Investors No Longer See Bad News on Economy as Good News
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nRecession Threat May Mean Stock-Market Investors No Longer See Bad News on Economy as Good News\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2023-04-10 19:09
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Investors are suddenly worried about a potential recession. That means \"bad news\" on the economy might no longer be \"good news\" for the stock market.Until recently, investors welcomed signs of a slowing economy, figuring it meant the Federal Reserve would soon stop raising interest rates, presumably in time to avert a recession as inflation cooled. Following last month's banking troubles, investors appear more fearful of a potential downturn, market watchers said. The market has shifted its focus from inflation to recession this year, according to Michele Morra, portfolio manager at Moneyfarm. The recent employment data adds to the growing evidence that inflation is slowing down, \"and even if taking into account a more dovish monetary policy, the main focus is recession,\" Morra said. The past week's data provided fresh evidence that the U.S. central bank's tightening cycle is finally having an effect on the labor market. While the March job report was strong, as the U.S. added 236,000 jobs, there are some hints that the labor market is softening.ADP on Wednesday said the private sector added 145,000 jobs in March, well below the 210,000 expected by economists. Jobless claims data on Thursday morning showed first-time applications for benefits last week came in higher than expected.Investors are waiting for the March consumer price index data to be released on Wednesday and the producer price index data due Thursday. For economic data, \"we believe that slightly bad news is good, but not terrible news,\" said Jay Hatfield, chief executive at Infrastructure Capital Advisors. \"It is good to extend the labor market weakening song, but there are fears that the economy is going to crash or crack,\" Hatfield said in a phone interview.Stocks have gained so far this year, after a tough 2022. The stock market was closed Friday for the Good Friday holiday though stock index futures posted small gains in a shortened trading session following the release of the March jobs report.\"I think we're probably in a range-trading environment, while investors and companies try to make up their mind about whether they need to be defensive or not,\" said Andrew Bell, chief executive at Witan Investment Trust.Market participants aren't quite sure whether the Fed is done raising rates, he said, while it's unclear whether the economy is headed for recession and whether there will be a need to \"take a knife\" to earnings estimates in coming weeks, Bell said, in a phone interview. First-quarter corporate earnings reporting season kicks off later this week. For the past few weeks, the S&P 500 has been trading close to the top of its recent trading range of 3,800 to 4,200, so it's normal to have pullbacks, said Infrastructure Capital's Hatfield. However, as companies begin to report their earnings for the first quarter, it could set the S&P 500 up for a breakout above the 4,200 level, Hatfield said.\"We think most earnings will be good,\" Hatfield said. The U.S. economy is still relatively strong with no significant unemployment, while it would be easier for companies to beat expectations as some analysts have \"gotten super bearish,\" Hatfield added.Analysts cut their outlook pretty aggressively during the first quarter as the economic outlook deteriorated. The S&P 500 dipped 0.75% to 4,327.16 and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.8% to 14,427.24.\nThe three averages closed the week lower to each snap 3-week win streaks. The Dow ended the week down 0.52%, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.97% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.87% during the same period.\n\nA U.S.consumer sentimentindex from the University of Michigan came in at 80.8 for the first half of July, down from 85.5 last month and worse than estimates from economists, who projected an increase. The report released Friday showed inflation expectations rising, with consumers believing prices will increase 4.8% in the next year, the highest level since August 2008.\nThe Dow gave up its gains early Friday shortly after the University of Michigan report came out 30 minutes into the session. Losses increased as the day went on with major averages closing at the lows of the session.\nThe consumer sentiment weakness “is at face value hard to square with the acceleration in employment growth and the continued resilience of the stock market,” said Andrew Hunter, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, but the report “suggested that concerns over surging inflation are now outweighing those positive trends.”\nInflation fears\nThe market was held back all week by inflation fears although the S&P 500 and Dow did touch new all-time highs briefly. On Tuesday, theconsumer price indexshowed a 5.4% increase in June from a year ago, the fastest pace in nearly 13 years.\nStocks got off to a good start Friday with the Dow rising more than 100 points to above 35,000 shortly after the open.Data released before the bell showed retail and food service salesrose 0.6% in June, while economists surveyed by Dow Jones had expected a 0.4% decline. If that level held, it would have been the Dow’s first close ever above 35,000.\nDespite the week’s losses, the Dow is still up 13% for the year and sits just 1.15% from an all-time high. The S&P 500 is up 15% on the year and is 1.51% below its record level.\n“The market looks broadly fairly valued to me, with most stocks priced to provide a market rate of return plus or minus a few percent,” Bill Miller, chairman and chief investment officer of Miller Value Partners, said in an investor letter.\n“There are pockets of what look like appreciable over-valuation and pockets of significant undervaluation in the US market, in my opinion. We can find plenty of names to fill our portfolios and so remain fully invested,” the value investor added.\nEnergy correction\nEnergy stocks, the hottest part of the market in 2021, fell into correction territory on Friday as oil prices pulled back from their highs.\nThe Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund fell more than 2% on Friday, the worst of any group, dropping 14% from its high. Still, the sector is up about 28% in 2021, making it the top performer of any of the 11 main industry groups.\nWeaker performance from technology stocks also weighed on the market Friday. Shares of Apple closed 1.4% lower afternotching a record closejust two days prior. Netflix shares fell ahead of the streaming giant’s second-quarter earnings report next week.\nInvestors digested strong earnings results from the first major week of second-quarter reports. Though some of the nation’s largest companies posted healthy earnings and revenues amid the economic recovery, the reaction in the stock market has so far been muted.\nThe Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund ended the week 1.5% lower despite big profit growth numbers posted by the likes of JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America.\n“Good earnings might have become an excuse for some investors to take profit. And with earnings expectations so high in general, it takes a really big beat for a company to impress,” JJ Kinahan, TD Ameritrade chief market strategist, said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":25,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":149884366,"gmtCreate":1625714834555,"gmtModify":1703746988040,"author":{"id":"3581997496673642","authorId":"3581997496673642","name":"CookieMon12","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d412f1a182e016f0fe66376d12556dee","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"No wonder market dipped these few days. But income investors don't have to wait until then to own this diversified consumer foods giant.
\n
Pepsi's deep portfolio of snacks helped it post solid growth in 2020 despite pandemic-related demand slumps in the soda industry. Wall Street is worried about a modest profitability drop ahead as the company invests more in growth niches like energy drinks. But Pepsi is playing the long game, and cash it spends upgrading its supply chain should pay off for shareholders over time.
\n
2. IBM
\n
IBM boasts some attractive dividend metrics. It yields over 4%, and the IT giant has also raised its dividend in each of the last 25 years.
\n
There are some notable risks to be aware of, though. IBM is executing a spin-off right now that might threaten its overall payout. Sales growth has been hard to find recently, too, with revenue falling 2% in early 2021 after accounting for currency exchange shifts.
\n
Still, income investors will enjoy IBM's gushing cash flow and its large, stable business. Pfizer
\n
Despite its central role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic, Pfizer stock has trailed the broader market over the past year. That situation has helped push its yield above 4%, though, in a welcome development for dividend fans.
\n
The biotech giant recently raised its growth outlook after sales jumped 42% in the first quarter. Besides its COVID-19 vaccine, which will require several more treatments over the next few years, other promising drugs include blood clot-fighting Eliquis, which grew sales by over 30% in early 2021.
\n
Sure, Pfizer isn't likely to see a repeat approaching anything close to the $26 billion it is expecting to book for the COVID-19 vaccine this year. But this dividend stock still has a lot to offer investors who want exposure to the biotech world.
\n
4. Hasbro
\n
There's plenty of room to grow in the toy niche -- if you're a dominant global player, that is. Hasbro has been cashing in on its leading position for years, through its mix of company-owned brands like Monopoly and Nerf and exclusive partnerships with giants like Disney. Growth in these areas allowed sales to rise 1% last quarter despite a 34% COVID-19-related slump in its TV division.
\n
Wall Street has acknowledged this good news by sending the stock higher over the past year. The world's leading subscription-based streaming service will announce its first-quarter results after having posted wildly different growth rates in the previous two reports.
\n
Netflix's late April earnings showed much slower user growth than management had forecast, which executives blamed on temporary challenges like a light content release schedule rather than rising competition from rivals like Disney (NYSE:DIS).
\n
That explanation raises the bar for Netflix to issue an optimistic forecast for the second half of 2021 in its announcement on July 20. Let's take a look at the key metrics to follow in that report.
\n
Meeting low expectations
\n
Growth expectations are low following last quarter's surprise slowdown. Netflix is aiming to add just 1 million global subscribers after gaining 4 million last quarter. The same factors that powered that weak Q1 result will affect Q2. Those include a return to more normal TV trends as people turned to other entertainment activities in the wake of the pandemic.
\n
The big growth question is whether Netflix is feeling heat from competition like Disney's expanding streaming service. Executives said in April that these threats weren't to blame for the slow start to the year, given that engagement remained strong with existing members and growth was sluggish across many markets rather than just in the ones with new competition. Tuesday's report will mark Netflix's opportunity to show that it is still the leader in the niche.
\n
Capital questions
\n
The improving cash flow picture has been a big factor behind Netflix's stock price surge, and that's likely to be another highlight of this report. Ironically, the worry is that the company can't spend cash quickly enough to keep the content pipeline fully stocked. Most TV and movie production paused early last year and has only now started back up. Management is hoping to spend as much as $17 billion on content this year while marking its first year of positive cash flow.
\n
NFLX Cash from Operations (TTM) data by YCharts
\n
Look for a new financial metric this quarter, too: stock buyback spending. Executives started that program in Q2 after the company found plenty of room to invest in the business while paying down its debt.
\n
The forecast for the second half
\n
Netflix has been telling investors that the business will resume its impressive growth rate in the second half of the year, mainly thanks to the flood of new releases that will hit its servers. Tuesday's report is management's opportunity to back up those claims with hard numbers.
\n
The company will issue a new subscriber outlook that should reflect its industry leadership position and its unusually high member loyalty. Anything less might be a reason for shareholders to worry. Meanwhile, Netflix's updated profit outlook should continue forecasting at least a 20% operating margin, assuming management is right about its ability to raise prices as user engagement rises.
\n
The forecast for the fall and winter months might seem weak compared to the blockbuster growth the service enjoyed in 2019 and 2020. But with global membership rising further above 200 million, it should also reinforce the idea that Netflix is still in the early days of improving on its current base of just 10% of total TV screen time in the U.S. market.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Netflix Earnings: What to Watch
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNetflix Earnings: What to Watch\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-17 21:22 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) investors are bracing for a volatile trading week ahead.
