The ensuing weeks have brought a surprisingly weak jobs report and a stronger-than-expected consumer inflation report, for example.
\n
And unlike last month’s meeting, there wasn’t an attention-grabbing selloff in Treasuries to command officials’ attention. The steep climb in yields abated at the end of March, even as economic data showed and stronger price pressures in April. The 10-year yield has dropped to 1.64% from 1.74% on March 31.
\n
Yet the document may still provide some clues about the central bank’s views. And officials have provided more perspective on policy since the latest meeting as well. Notably, Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida spoke at a conference on Monday and discussed some recent economic data points as well.
\n
Here’s what strategists expect out of the meeting today, and what Clarida said about the topics:
\n
“Attuned and Attentive” to “Transitory” Inflation?
\n
One popular line among Fed officials, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been the assurance that this spring is expected to bring a “transitory” rise in inflation, mostly related to the reopening of the U.S. economy after the pandemic brought a sharp deceleration in activity last year.
\n
Mizuho economists Steven Ricchiuto and Alex Pelle wrote in a May 18 note that they expect “several mentions of ‘transitory’ price pressures” in the minutes. They also highlighted that many of the steepest increases in consumer prices in April were in sectors where demand had been hit most by the pandemic, such as hotels and airfares. “So far [that] validates the Fed’s thinking,” they added.
\n
Yet at Monday’s conference, Clarida seemed to be repeating a different type of assurance about inflation: That the central bank would be “attuned and attentive” to any data showing higher price pressures.
\n
“In the CPI report, [reopening] did clearly put upward pressure on prices. Now our baseline view is that most of this is likely to be transitory, but we have to be attuned and attentive to the incoming data,” he said. “[The] key element of our mandate is price stability and an important component of price stability is well-anchored inflation expectations. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”
\n
Taper Timeline
\n
Investors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.
\n
Most on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.
\n
So any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.
\n
Labor-Market Outlook
\n
One key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.
\n
Still, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes: How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?
\n
Before the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.
\n
Clarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.
\n
“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”
\n
Ultimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes: Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy. And the economic data has been so volatile during the reopening that the picture could change significantly by the time the Fed meets again in June.
\n
That means investors will have to hold tight for a while longer to get a sense of when the central bank plans to start stepping back.
\n
“We’re reluctant to call this an equilibrium of any sort – rather it’s much more likely to prove a temporary holding pattern as macro expectations are further refined,” wrote Ian Lyngen, strategist with BMO. “Clearly, we have more questions than answers.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Things to Watch for in the Fed Minutes Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Things to Watch for in the Fed Minutes Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-19 20:51 GMT+8 Barrons\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but investors should still keep an eye out for a few different themes.\nThe minutes are due out at 2 p.m. ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".SPX":"S&P 500 Index",".DJI":"道琼斯",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite"},"source_url":"https://www.barrons.com/articles/inflation-jobs-and-more-to-watch-for-in-todays-fed-minutes-release-51621421812?mod=hp_LEAD_3","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1103552481","content_text":"The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but investors should still keep an eye out for a few different themes.\nThe minutes are due out at 2 p.m. today, and Fed watchers may face a greater challenge than usual in deciphering their significance: A lot has changed in the economy since the April 28-29 meeting. And the economic data has been so volatile during the reopening that the picture could change significantly by the time the Fed meets again in June.\nThat means investors will have to hold tight for a while longer to get a sense of when the central bank plans to start stepping back.\n“We’re reluctant to call this an equilibrium of any sort – rather it’s much more likely to prove a temporary holding pattern as macro expectations are further refined,” wrote Ian Lyngen, strategist with BMO. “Clearly, we have more questions than answers.”","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,".DJI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1862,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":107896208,"gmtCreate":1620460794404,"gmtModify":1704344076021,"author":{"id":"3581999565718990","authorId":"3581999565718990","name":"Daniu01","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0a02b45be6148bfd2eb9a601fca91b4f","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581999565718990","idStr":"3581999565718990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment please ","listText":"Like and comment please ","text":"Like and comment please","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/107896208","repostId":"1106882084","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2284,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3556144692243777","authorId":"3556144692243777","name":"Dynamism","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/db9d6b46a7676559e8a7f6dec3c91c10","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3556144692243777","idStr":"3556144692243777"},"content":"ok pls reply","text":"ok pls reply","html":"ok pls reply"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":106389689,"gmtCreate":1620088326841,"gmtModify":1704338404432,"author":{"id":"3581999565718990","authorId":"3581999565718990","name":"Daniu01","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0a02b45be6148bfd2eb9a601fca91b4f","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581999565718990","idStr":"3581999565718990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment pls","listText":"Like and comment pls","text":"Like and comment pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/106389689","repostId":"1147234999","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1963,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3555321706323687","authorId":"3555321706323687","name":"KingMeng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2a4230fd8d7c8381fff3acc8774ac46e","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3555321706323687","idStr":"3555321706323687"},"content":"done. do like and reply back. thanks!","text":"done. do like and reply back. thanks!","html":"done. do like and reply back. thanks!"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":108629165,"gmtCreate":1620020328357,"gmtModify":1704337490021,"author":{"id":"3581999565718990","authorId":"3581999565718990","name":"Daniu01","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0a02b45be6148bfd2eb9a601fca91b4f","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581999565718990","idStr":"3581999565718990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Amazing ","listText":"Amazing ","text":"Amazing","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/108629165","repostId":"1135819410","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1135819410","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1619999342,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1135819410?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-03 07:49","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Uber, Pfizer, PayPal, T-Mobile, ViacomCBS, General Motors, and Other Stocks for Investors to Watch This Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1135819410","media":"Barrons","summary":"It’s another packed week of earnings reports, with 130 S&P 500 companies on deck to release their fi","content":"
It’s another packed week of earnings reports, with 130 S&P 500 companies on deck to release their first-quarter results. Even after falling more than 20% from its January 52-week high, Tesla’s stock price has gained more than 400% over the past 12 months. The huge run has made Tesla, never the cheapest of stocks, look even more expensive. How much is Tesla stock? It’s the third priciest stock in the S&P 500 based on 12-month earnings projections.
\n
Tesla has big plans, including solar panels, home battery storage, and charging networks, but is also facing new competition that is narrowing the gap on electric vehicles. Here’s what you need to know before buying Tesla stock.
\n
The case against buying Tesla stock:Tesla makes cars. They’re good cars–exciting cars even–but still cars. Tesla sold about 500,000 cars in 2020, which is a fraction of the number sold by Ford Motor (F),General Motors (GM),and other auto manufacturers. But Tesla’s market cap is larger than Ford, GM,Toyota (TM) and Volkswagen (VOW3.Germany) combined. Tesla isn’t valued like other car companies; it’s valued like a high-growth technology stock.
\n
Tesla shares trade for roughly 85 times estimated 2023 earnings.Amazon.com (AMZN), another highly valued growth stock, has traded for about 40 to 50 times estimated earnings a couple of years out.
\n

\n
For Tesla to warrant that valuation, it will need to sell more cars, introduce new models, and maintain the sky-high profit margins it earns from being the first mover in electric vehicles. That’s what worries J.P. Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman, who rates Tesla stock a Sell with a $155 price target. Tesla will have to execute flawlessly as the company ramps up new models and new production. Any slippage in new model timelines, production, or profit margins arising from higher-than-expected start-up costs might disappoint investors. For Brinkman, the risks of any stumbles aren’t adequately reflected in the current share price.
\n
Others worry about Tesla’s ability to continue selling what’s known as Zero Emission Vehicle credits. Tesla earns those credits by selling electric vehicles. It then sells those credits to car companies that make traditional gas-powered cars and need to offset their carbon. Selling those credits has made Tesla $2 billion from 2011 to 2020. Roth Capital analyst Craig Irwin worries that the value of credits will decline as other auto makers start selling move EVs. He rates Tesla a Hold and predicts the stock can hit $150.
\n
Brikman and Irwin have two of the lowest price targets for Tesla stock. At their price targets, Tesla would still be worth almost as much as Toyota (TM).
\n
The case for buying Tesla stock:Yes, Tesla stock is pricey, and buying it means that you believe the company can be worth much more than a car manufacturer. That’s not unheard: Apple was once an overpriced computer manufacturer until it decided to do more than build computers. And many of the most optimistic investors see Tesla become something very similar to, well, Apple.
\n
Just as Apple sells hardware like phones, computers, and watches and then offers services inside its ecosystem, Cannacord analyst Jonathan Dorsheimer believes Tesla can sell cars, solar panels, and batteries, and then sell services and software to its customers. Dorsheimer rates Tesla stock Buy with a $1,071 price target, one of the highest price targets on the Street.
\n
And Tesla has plenty of services to offer. The company sells residential solar panels, battery backup power, electricity as part of its charging network, as well as self-driving software. ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood believes full self-driving technology will help Tesla launch its robotaxi business in the coming years.
\n
Of course, Tesla will always make cars. Because it only makes EVs, it costs the company less to make an electric car than other auto makers, which means more profit per car. Tesla started out selling higher-end cars such as the Model S, Roadster, and Model X SUV. In recent years, Tesla introduced a lower-priced Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover vehicle. Tesla’s lineup today is comparable to, say, BMW (BMW.Germany). In the future, Tesla plans to offer lower-priced sedans and a light-duty truck dubbed Cybertruck.
\n
Tesla is building capacity to meet its expanding addressable market. New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu projects 2 million deliveries by 2023 with sales over $90 billion, up from the 500,000 cars delivered in 2020 and sales of $31.5 billion.
\n
Dorsheimer and Ferragu believe these goals are realistic and make the stock worth buying.
\n
Barron’stake on buying Tesla stock: Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas recently warned his clients that auto investors “face a greater risk of not owning Tesla shares in their portfolio than owning Tesla shares.” And we agree.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Should I Buy Tesla Stock? And many of the most optimistic investors see Tesla become something very similar to, well, Apple.\nJust as Apple sells hardware like phones, computers, and watches and then offers services inside its ecosystem, Cannacord analyst Jonathan Dorsheimer believes Tesla can sell cars, solar panels, and batteries, and then sell services and software to its customers. Dorsheimer rates Tesla stock Buy with a $1,071 price target, one of the highest price targets on the Street. \nAnd Tesla has plenty of services to offer. The company sells residential solar panels, battery backup power, electricity as part of its charging network, as well as self-driving software. ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood believes full self-driving technology will help Tesla launch its robotaxi business in the coming years.\nOf course, Tesla will always make cars. In the future, Tesla plans to offer lower-priced sedans and a light-duty truck dubbed Cybertruck.\nTesla is building capacity to meet its expanding addressable market. New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu projects 2 million deliveries by 2023 with sales over $90 billion, up from the 500,000 cars delivered in 2020 and sales of $31.5 billion.\nDorsheimer and Ferragu believe these goals are realistic and make the stock worth buying.\nBarron’stake on buying Tesla stock: Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas recently warned his clients that auto investors “face a greater risk of not owning Tesla shares in their portfolio than owning Tesla shares.” And we agree.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1379,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371972591,"gmtCreate":1618907033213,"gmtModify":1704716672598,"author":{"id":"3581999565718990","authorId":"3581999565718990","name":"Daniu01","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0a02b45be6148bfd2eb9a601fca91b4f","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581999565718990","idStr":"3581999565718990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/371972591","repostId":"2128653817","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2128653817","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1618906060,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2128653817?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-20 16:07","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"DBS, StanChart among potential bidders for Citi's Asia consumer business - sources","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2128653817","media":"Reuters","summary":"SINGAPORE/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Banks including DBS Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), OC","content":"
SINGAPORE/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Banks including DBS Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), OCBC and Standard Chartered are set to bid for parts of Citigroup's consumer business in Asia, people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
\n
The sale process will start within a couple of weeks, the people added, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak to media.
\n
The move comes after Citi said that it would exit from its consumer franchises in 13 markets, 10 of which are in Asia, as it refocuses on its more lucrative institutional and wealth management businesses in these markets.
\n
The businesses Citi is exiting had $82 billion in total assets and were allocated $7 billion in tangible common equity last year, Citi has said.
\n
As Citi is not giving up its banking licences in most of these markets, the sale of the consumer banking portfolios and branches will only appeal to lenders with existing presence in these countries, the people said.
\n
\"Asia is critical to our firm's strategy, and we will allocate resources to drive profitable growth for our franchise,\" a Citi spokesman in Hong Kong said, declining to comment on the sale process.
\n
Representatives at Japanese lender MUFG and StanChart, and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, which the sources said was another potential bidder, declined to comment.
\n
\"DBS has always been open to exploring sensible bolt-on opportunities in markets where we have a consumer banking franchise (China, India, Indonesia and Taiwan),\" the bank, Southeast Asia's biggest lender, said in a statement.
\n
Citi's sprawling India consumer business, comprising retail deposits, mortgages and credit cards, as well as its Taiwan business would be among the most valuable parts of its Asian consumer portfolio, according to the sources.
\n
DBS, the only big foreign bank with a fully owned Indian subsidiary, is eyeing Citi's India business, which is also set to attract StanChart, and local lenders Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank, they said.
\n
SBI Cards and Payment Services Ltd, a unit of the country's top public lender State Bank of India, is also weighing a bid for the U.S. bank's credit card portfolio in India, two of the sources said.
\n
Kotak Mahindra declined to comment.
