Tempers are up.\nAcross the United States, businesses are grappling with an astonishing rise in what can only be called “people behaving badly.”\nRetail workers have been subjected to horrifying attacks based on their race, gender identity or disability. Flight attendants have been verbally — and occasionally physically — assaulted. Aggressive driving has led to road rage, with deadly consequences. Shoppers are brawling in the aisles.\nExperts are pointing to soaring stress levels as the trigger for the rise in these types of incidents.\nThe not-so-friendly skies\nIn May, aflight attendantforSouthwest Airlineshadtwo teeth knocked out by a furious passenger, according to law enforcement who arrested the woman in San Diego. It was just one of the latest examples as airlines struggle with an unprecedented onslaught of confrontations.\n“We can say with confidence that the number of reports we’ve received during the past several months are significantly higher than the numbers we’ve seen in the past,” said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.\nThe FAA tracks incidentswith problem passengers and says issues surrounding face masks have been a contributing factor.\nUnion reps have described the situation as an “epidemic of aggression and assault.”\nAlcohol also can be a factor. Both Southwest andAmerican Airlineshave decidednot to resume in-flight alcohol salesright now because of the unruly behavior.\nIndefinite bans for NBA fans\nNBA fans returning to arenas is a welcome sight for the league, which was reportedly$1.5 billion short of revenue expectationslast season as the pandemic resulted in lost ticket sales. Yet, the return of fans has brought a host of new problems.\nFor example, in Boston, a 21-year-old Celtics fan wascharged with assault and batteryby means of a dangerous weapon, after heaving a water bottle at Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving as he left the court at TD Garden.\nIn New York, Atlanta Hawks guardTrae Young got spit onduring a playoff game against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. And Washington Wizards starRussell Westbrookgot popcorn dumped on him by a fan as he left the court with an injury.\n“To be completely honest, this s--- is getting out of hand. ... The amount of disrespect, the amount of fans just doing whatever the f--- they want to do ... it’s just out of pocket,” Westbrook said in a postgame press conference.\nThe league issueda statementon the recent behavior and made changes to its fan code of conduct as a result.\n“The return of more NBA fans to our arenas has brought great excitement and energy to the start of the playoffs, but it is critical that we all show respect for players, officials and our fellow fans,” the NBA said.\nMany of the teams impacted are not tolerating the bad behavior, placing indefinite bans on rude fansattending future games.\n“Something’s gonna happen to the wrong person and it’s not gonna be good,” warned Portland star Damian Lillard.\nRetailers team up\nIt’s not just sports stadiums and arenas. The retail industry is also seeing an uptick in bad behavior, often targeted toward employees. According to Emily May, co-founder and executive director of the nonprofitHollaback!, retailers are seeing an alarming rise in discrimination where floor staff are being targeted for who they are when enforcing safety measures.\n“Given the rise in hate violence — which is at an all-time high — frontline workers are more vulnerable than ever,” she said in a statement.\nIt’s gotten so bad that at least a dozen retailers includingGap,Dick’s Sporting Goodsand Sephora have teamed up to collaborate on a campaign with the nonprofitOpen to All.\n“We are trying to create a movement where everyone comes together around the values of inclusion and safety, where we all can be safe and accepted and belong for who we are,” said director Calla Devlin Rongerude.\n“We haven’t been in crowds, we haven’t negotiated spaces with a lot of other people for quite a while. I think we’re out of practice with how to be human with each other,” she added.\nAs part of the campaign, the participating retailers will have access to a toolkit and other resources to support front-line workers.\nGrown men fighting over Pokemon cards\nAs theresale value of Pokemon and sports cards has skyrocketedduring the pandemic, retailers such asTargetandWalmarthave seen firsthand the impact: grown men getting in physical altercations over these cards.\nLast month, a 35-year-old manpulled a gunwhen he was attacked by a group of men in a trading-card related fight. It forced Target to temporarily pull the trading cards from its stores.\n“The safety of our guests and team members is our top priority,” Target said in a statement.\nThe retailer said Pokemon cards have since returned to the store but customers are subject to strict purchase limits of two packs per guest. The sale of MLB, NFL and NBA trading cards is still limited to Target’s website.\nRemember ‘the Golden Rule’\nWhether it’s aggressive driving or tempers on full display in restaurants, gas stations or Little League games, the bad behavior is caused by a confluence of factors, according to Thomas Plante, a psychology professor at the University of Santa Clara.\n“We’ve got a tsunami of mental health issues out there, with anxiety and depression,” Plante said, adding that our collective stress levels have never been higher.\nPeople are juggling multiple stressors, he said. Among them: the pandemic, death, illness, job loss, homeschooling kids, isolation and other challenges. That frustration can lead to aggression.\nThere’s also “observational learning,” Plante said, explaining that when people see bad behavior all around them, even by so-called role models, they are more likely to repeat it.\n“People model behavior of others, especially highly valued models, like ... well-known politicians,” Plante said. “People look at how they behave, which has been pretty bad, and they go and do likewise.”\nWhat will reverse the trend? Plante’s suggestion sounds like something one might hear from the pulpit or a parent: Treat others the way you want to be treated.\n“People have kind of gotten out of practice about how to behave in public, and how to behave in a polite, civil society,” Plante said.\nThe Golden Rule can help us get back on track.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":171,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":180759292,"gmtCreate":1623228468916,"gmtModify":1704198797369,"author":{"id":"3582007616276412","authorId":"3582007616276412","name":"Tencent2040","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d9f0b2f501bd439ef3d417e80a2b4cb","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3582007616276412","idStr":"3582007616276412"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Let's see how it goes. While the exact details of the report weren't fully corroborated, such an impact to deliveries raises the possibility of more troubles in China ahead. However, a recent report showed that deliveries in Mayjumped 29% m/m, reversing last week's report. Overall, Tesla's increased scrutiny in China and extensive competition in the watchful eyes of the CCP could possibly impact Tesla's growth potential in the domestic market, of which contributes substantial value to shares.
\n
The EV landscape in China is highly competitive, with dozens of manufacturers finding high growth rates after entry to the market. China's government is looking to be favoring its domestic manufacturers with some favorable subsidy policies aiding NIO in the luxury market, as Tesla's recently-price-raised Model Y is ineligible for such subsidies.
\n
China is an increasingly important market for electric vehicle manufacturers, with the country pushing its electrification agenda to drive substantial adoption of EV over the course of the decade, and smaller penetration (<10%) relative to total auto sales leaves much market share to capture. China presents a massive market opportunity with EV sales forecast to reach1.8 million vehiclesfor 2021, and possibly over3 million vehiclesby 2022.
\n
The country is also increasingly important for Tesla, accounting for a solid proportion of deliveries, both in China and overseas, and revenues, as GF Shanghai ramps to its full potential. There were some glimpses ofmarket share troublethat arose late last year in China and Europe, and the May China data revives those troubles with the potential scale of Beijing's involvement still uncertain, but not looking favorable.
\n
Tesla started off 2021 delivering 184,800 vehicles worldwide duringQ1, a~2.3% sequential improvement from Q4 '20(and about double y/y) even though deliveries are typically loaded in the back half of the year. Yet the potential weakness in China arising through Q2 and \"increased scrutiny\" put more pressure on the manufacturer's ability to deliver in the country in the traditional high buying season in September and October.
\n
Deliveries in China monthly during 2021 have shown strong demand in the broader market, but some fading sales for Tesla amidst the government scrutiny. Some vehicles like the Great Wall ORA (OTCPK:GWLLF), Chang'an BenBen, and the Clever and Roewe eRX5 from SAIC have seen massive growth at volume, and could be pushing for top five selling spots by the end of the year.
\n
Tesla's cumulative deliveries in China have reached 102,887 units according to CPCA's data; broken down by month:
\n
\n
January: 15,484
\n
February: 18,318
\n
March: 35,478
\n
April: 25,845 (11,671 sales, 14,174 exports)
\n
May: 9,800 net orders (reported last week); 33,463 units reported Tuesday (21,936 sales, 11,527 exports)
\n
\n
While January through March exhibited m/m growth rates similar to the broader market,Aprilrepresented a27% m/m decline for Teslacompared to just a 12% m/m decline for EV volumes. Tesla only held the third spot for retail sales, with BYD and SGMW both selling over 10,000 units more at 31,908 and 33,175 units respectively. However, Tesla's Q1 deliveries were nearly 5% lower than Wuling's, as theMinioutsold every other vehicle.
\n
ThatQ1tally of 69,280 vehicles is approximately37.5% of Tesla's total vehicle deliveriesfor the quarter. Revenues generated by the segment were just over $3 billion, accounting for33.8% of total automotive and29.3% of total revenuesas \"lower ASP China-made vehicles became a larger percentage of our mix.\" For 2020, China accounted for just 21.1% of total revenues, so the segment is growing in importance, and the country now is undeniably one of the, if not the, most important regions for Tesla at the moment from the current revenue/delivery picture, as well as the long-term growth picture over the course of the next few years.
\n
China's TTM revenues have reach $8.8 billion, but the segment could be poised to reach $13-14 billion this year (+98-110% y/y), given seasonality of demand in China and deliveries for Tesla. With consensus estimates pointing to about $49 billion in revenue for 2021 (+/-10% high/low figures), China is set to maintain a 27-29% revenue contribution.
\n
At the moment, the China segment could be worth approximately 13x 2021 revenues, slightly above Tesla's ~11.8x 2021 forward multiple, which is justified by the segment's high revenue growth rate around 100% and overall importance to the company in terms of revenues and deliveries. Valuation at that multiplegives China an estimated valuation of $169-182 billion, or about $180 per share.
\n
With that estimated valuation, the market's reaction at the moment, down about 4-5% intra-day following the news, looks normal. The reported May numbers, although not fully corroborated, are likely to be revealed within the next two weeks when CPCA releases its monthly report. And that has been the case, with the CPCA data showing the opposite held true, with deliveries rising, with shares up following the report.
\n
Tesla has also beenclouded by other negative press and scrutinyabout product safety (see the recent brake bolt recalls) and data handling from Beijing could be contributing to declines in sales seen the past two months. There have been more \"local reports of Tesla brake failures, crashes and explosions,\" rumored 'highway bans' in Guangzhou, halted expansion plansat GF Shanghai and reports of a separate two-week production pause.
\n
Junheng Li of JL Warren Capital sees that the negative press could have a \"definitive material impacton Tesla branding, orders and deliveries for future months, although it’s hard to quantify exactly to what extent the declining demand is driven by concerns on Tesla’s safety features, or rising competition especially from Chinese automakers.\" Rising competition is visible, and Beijing's scrutinizing stance against Tesla is looming overhead.
\n
There's a chance that Beijing would turn cold to Tesla, favoring fast-growing domestic rivals like NIO and XPeng who challenge Tesla from a technological and innovative standpoint, as it wants to have domestic players become some of the world's leading EV manufacturers, especially withrising US-China tensions. While it simply can't ban the manufacturer from selling there, it could turn to subsidy policies to incentivize purchases of domestic models - Tesla's Model Y above RMB300,000 is ineligible, while NIO's models are eligible at any price due to BaaS. Tesla has been using Shanghai as an export base for Europe, and added tariffs could mitigate the benefit of the factory as an export hub; Beijing could also start to turn the cold shoulder to Tesla in terms of the safety and technology and guide consumers to Chinese cars in the future.
\n
The element of trust is important for businesses operating in China, as consumers can be distrusting of new, foreign, or unknown brands. Domestic brand growth and improvement has seen more growth of domestic manufacturers over foreign, especially in the smartphone market, and also now in the EV space. Widespread negative press and the incidents arising with Tesla do erode trust, from both the consumer and the government. Such loss of trust could see more difficulties in sales throughout the remainder of the year, especially if Beijing works to stall sales growth by promoting distrust of the brand through negative press. A scenario of that sort, which impacts deliveries through Q3 and Q4, the two most important quarters for Tesla, could shave 25% off of the China segment valuation, or ~$42-46 per share, another ~7% downside purely from China.
\n
Overall, the market's reaction to the reported decline in May sales has merit, as the segment is highly important to the manufacturer from delivery and revenue contribution currently and over the course of the next few years with triple-digit growth potential in 2021 alone. April sales fell 27% m/m, while some domestic manufacturers saw sequential growth, and May figures reversed course and showed a strong gain after a report pointed to a sharp fall in orders. While Q1 deliveries in China were strong at nearly 70,000 units, Q2's deliveries already look to face a large impact, with potential factors of the decline including domestic competition and a barrage of widespread negative press. With seasonality in Q3 and Q4, Tesla could be facing a tough uphill climb against rising domestic players backed by the government, negative press and a loss of trust, and possible headwinds brought about in the face of rising US-China tensions.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla's China Scare
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTesla's China Scare\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-09 16:44 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nTesla saw a 27% m/m decline in deliveries for April with a majority of the reported figure exported, and a report last week pointed to a 50% decline for May.\nA recent report from Reuters ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"TSLA":"特斯拉"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4433693-tesla-china-scare","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1133238185","content_text":"Summary\n\nTesla saw a 27% m/m decline in deliveries for April with a majority of the reported figure exported, and a report last week pointed to a 50% decline for May.\nA recent report from Reuters disproved the prior report, showing deliveries rising 29% m/m, and up 88% excluding exports.\nDomestic players including NIO, XPeng, BYD, and SAIC-GM-Wuling have seen solid growth while Tesla's numbers declined.\nChina is ultra-important for Tesla, accounting for ~37.5% of Q1's deliveries and 33.8% of automotive revenues, with a projected segment valuation at $175 billion.\nDelivery declines, mounting negative press and increased scrutiny from Beijing threaten the segment's valuation, and open up 5-8% downside possibility.\n\nTesla's (TSLA) Thursday last week turned sour early in the afternoon, as a report stated that net order volumes slumped significantly for May. Over the past two-plus decades, the company has grown at a rapid pace into an ecommerce juggernaut that is a fixture in the Chinese consumer economy, and burgeoning tech investments that include fintech, cloud computing, media, and other AI-powered ventures. Is the stock a buy, hold, or sell right now? Let's take a closer look at the business to find out.

Strong Moat-Powered Growth

BABA continues to post strong growth numbers as its competitive advantages continue to grow stronger.

The company grew revenues in its most recent quarter by an incredible 64% year-over-year (40% organic growth) and posted strong guidance for FY2022. Furthermore, BABA appears poised to generate mid-to-high teens revenue growth over the next several years as its growth is broad-based and being driven by several organic factors including user growth (which is especially important as this strengthens their network effect moat), increased spending per customer (making their existing network more valuable), and rising online consumption in BABA's markets (which is good news for BABA since it owns a very strong digital presence).

The reason we are confident that BABA will continue to capture a growing share of China's rising middle class and e-commerce habits is that the company's internet services already touch the vast majority of online users in China. Given that BABA's marketplace is already so large, it essentially forces merchants and buyers into their ecosystem if they wish to succeed, which in turn gives BABA significant pricing power. Additionally, with so much exposure to China's online habits, BABA has an enormous data advantage over its competition which, in an age where A.I.-powered advertising algorithms are increasingly determining winners and losers in online commerce, gives it a decisive edge.

Looking longer term, BABA's determination to expand as a major player outside of China will likely give it enormous additional avenues of growth where it should be fairly well-positioned to compete as it uses its massive data bank from the Chinese market to give it a running start in foreign markets. That said, cultural and shopping tastes do differ across the globe, so BABA will still have to adapt and learn new approaches to gain market share in foreign markets, making these growth ambitions a bit more uncertain than their existing China business. One of the ways that China has tried to get around this hurdle is by acquiring stakes in foreign ecommerce businesses and then using their in-house expertise to improve the business in that market. An example of this is their controlling stake in Lazada, which operates in Southeast Asian economies like Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

BABA also owns its own logistics business, enabling it to exercise greater control over its product supply chain and improve margins while its cloud business - AliCloud - is another strong growth and free cash flow generating business that will grow as China's economy becomes increasingly digitized as part of the Chinese Government's strong drive to make the country A.I. focused.

Fortress Balance Sheet

BABA also boasts a stellar balance sheet, as indicated by its A+ credit rating from S&P. The company's latest quarterly filing indicated that cash and short term investments on the balance sheet had swelled to an incredible $73.8 billion. With long-term debt of just $20.7 billion, BABA has an incredibly conservative balance sheet. Their EBITDA/Interest coverage ratio is also very strong at 30x.

With so much cash on hand, strong access to capital via their A+ credit rating and a wide-moat business model, BABA is in a great position to buy back shares and/or invest aggressively to further grow and strengthen the business and position itself for long-term success.

Dirt-Cheap Valuation

Despite its incredible business and balance sheet strength, interest rates being near all-time lows, and stock indexes near all-time highs, BABA is trading at a remarkable discount, down significantly from all-time highs reached last fall:

Data by YCharts

The stock looks even cheaper when viewed on a price-to-earnings basis:

Data by YCharts

By way of comparison, BABA's nearest peer in the U.S. would be considered Amazon (AMZN) and it trades at 61.33 times earnings, which many consider to be reasonable, if not cheap:

Data by YCharts

As a result, BABA is only trading at 40% of AMZN's valuation despite possessing a business model that is comparable in strength and operating in an economy that is growing at a much faster rate than AMZN is.

Furthermore, BABA's forward price-to-earnings ratio is much cheaper at a mere 19.5. Even that might be understating how cheap they truly are, however, as their massive cash pile could easily be deployed to buy back shares and/or invest in new cash flowing businesses that would drive the P/E ratio even lower.

Clearly, we aren't alone in our thinking that BABA looks dirt cheap: Charlie Munger's Daily Journal recently added it to their high-conviction portfolio. Not only that, but they clearly have enormous conviction in the company as it takes up nearly 20% of their portfolio, making it their third-largest holding.

Significant Risks

That said, while Mr. Market does grossly misprice stocks all the time, he is not stupid and always has a good reason for discounting the stocks that he does even if he ends up being proven wrong. In the case of BABA, these reasons include:

BABA is not unchallenged in its Chinese e-commerce growth. Rising challenges from major competitors like JD.com (JD) and Pinduoduo (PDD) already rival BABA's marketplace in many respects. For example, PDD's active buyers in 2020 exceeded BABA's by 9 million, implying that - at least by some metrics - BABA's network advantage is not unassailable.

Founder Jack Ma has recently run afoul of the Chinese Communist Party due to some less-than supportive comments about its regulatory practices. In addition to the negative press, his financial interests have also paid the price, beginning with Ant Financial's IPO gettingcancelled by regulatorsand the company as a whole getting examined for it leveraging its enormous size and data advantage to engage in anti-competitive practices. The CCP appears bent on making an example of Jack Ma and, while recently announced anti-trust penalties of $2.75 billion are a mere slap on the wrist when compared with BABA's massive business size and cash pile, it may not be the end of the government's meddling with BABA.

Adding on to this, as the 2017 documentary film The China Hustle pointed out, Chinese balance sheets are not subject to the same scrutiny and audit measures as U.S. companies. As a result, it is possible that BABA is overstating its cash pile and/or its growth numbers. While we know enough to be assured of the fact that BABA is indeed an ecommerce and tech giant in China and not a fake company like many of those portrayed in the aforementioned film, it is still quite possible that BABA is not as cheap as it appears on paper. As fellow Seeking Alpha contributor Julian Lin pointed out in his insightful piece:

The stock is obviously undervalued. Yet does the company itself think so? Typically when a stock is so undervalued, the company would aggressively repurchase its own stock, especially when it generates as much free cash flow as BABA does. Yet BABA has not meaningfully repurchased shares ... The lack of action should not be ignored ... BABA management might not think its stock is undervalued, which would arguably be a red flag considering the stock is so obviously undervalued to the rest of Wall Street.

Last, but not least, China is facing an impending demographic crisis: its decades-long and recently abandoned \"One Child\" policy has now pushed its population into what appears to be decline along with a lopsided shifting of the population to where the working age Chinese face an unsustainable burden of supporting elderly retired people. The full impacts of this are unknown, but they do not bode well for the medium-to-long-term of the Chinese economy, nor for political stability in the country.

Investor Takeaway

With all that said, BABA seems to be a very confusing stock: on one hand, it appears to be a slam dunk strong buy with all the blocks checked: wide moat and well-diversified business model, strong growth momentum and lengthy growth runway, fortress balance sheet, very attractive valuation, and the endorsement of one of history's greatest investors in Charlie Munger.

On the other hand, Chinese regulators' hands are all over this company right now and we are unsure if there are any more major blows headed BABA's way. Furthermore, its founder has fallen from grace in Chinese society just as e-commerce competition is increasing in the country. Meanwhile, management is not exactly voicing significant confidence in the stock by failing to buy back meaningful sums of shares and geopolitical risks from China's emerging demographic crisis and increasingly bellicose rhetoric and collision course with the U.S. and its Asia-Pacific allies only heighten the investment risks here.

As a result, we view the stock as a speculative buy as Charlie Munger's investment here helps to allay some of our concerns. That said, we feel uncomfortable holding the stock ourselves given that the risks are of a nature that we cannot justify or fully quantify. For investors who do feel comfortable with them, there is a high probability that BABA presents very attractive risk-adjusted return potential here and, barring a major war or economic crisis in China emerging in the near future, should deliver strong returns relative to the broader U.S. stock indexes as current prices.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Alibaba: Is The Reward Worth The Risk?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAlibaba: Is The Reward Worth The Risk?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-18 15:09 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryBABA is one of the world's great e-commerce and tech giants. The business continues to post strong growth numbers and looks deeply undervalued. That said, the company has been plagued by negative...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BABA":"阿里巴巴","09988":"阿里巴巴-W"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4429094-alibaba-is-the-reward-worth-the-risk","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1165590108","content_text":"SummaryBABA is one of the world's great e-commerce and tech giants. The business continues to post strong growth numbers and looks deeply undervalued. That said, the company has been plagued by negative headlines. Is the stock a buy, hold, or sell right now?Photo by David Becker/Getty Images News via Getty ImagesAlibaba (BABA) is one of the world's great e-commerce and tech giants. Plante’s suggestion sounds like something one might hear from the pulpit or a parent: Treat others the way you want to be treated.\n“People have kind of gotten out of practice about how to behave in public, and how to behave in a polite, civil society,” Plante said.\nThe Golden Rule can help us get back on track.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":171,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":180759292,"gmtCreate":1623228468916,"gmtModify":1704198797369,"author":{"id":"3582007616276412","authorId":"3582007616276412","name":"Tencent2040","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d9f0b2f501bd439ef3d417e80a2b4cb","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582007616276412","authorIdStr":"3582007616276412"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Let's see how it goes.
Seasonal patterns were exhibited within a low volume February followed by a strong March; however, April was weaker m/m in the prior two years compared to 2018-19. GM's (GM) joint-venture creation, the Hongguang Mini, has held the throne for some time, nearly reaching 100,000 units in just four months as its cumulative deliveries hit ~230,000 units in less than one year.
While the exact details of the report weren't fully corroborated, such an impact to deliveries raises the possibility of more troubles in China ahead. However, a recent report showed that deliveries in Mayjumped 29% m/m, reversing last week's report. Overall, Tesla's increased scrutiny in China and extensive competition in the watchful eyes of the CCP could possibly impact Tesla's growth potential in the domestic market, of which contributes substantial value to shares.\nThe EV landscape in China is highly competitive, with dozens of manufacturers finding high growth rates after entry to the market. China's government is looking to be favoring its domestic manufacturers with some favorable subsidy policies aiding NIO in the luxury market, as Tesla's recently-price-raised Model Y is ineligible for such subsidies.\nChina is an increasingly important market for electric vehicle manufacturers, with the country pushing its electrification agenda to drive substantial adoption of EV over the course of the decade, and smaller penetration (<10%) relative to total auto sales leaves much market share to capture. China presents a massive market opportunity with EV sales forecast to reach1.8 million vehiclesfor 2021, and possibly over3 million vehiclesby 2022.\nThe country is also increasingly important for Tesla, accounting for a solid proportion of deliveries, both in China and overseas, and revenues, as GF Shanghai ramps to its full potential. There were some glimpses ofmarket share troublethat arose late last year in China and Europe, and the May China data revives those troubles with the potential scale of Beijing's involvement still uncertain, but not looking favorable.\nTesla started off 2021 delivering 184,800 vehicles worldwide duringQ1, a~2.3% sequential improvement from Q4 '20(and about double y/y) even though deliveries are typically loaded in the back half of the year. Yet the potential weakness in China arising through Q2 and \"increased scrutiny\" put more pressure on the manufacturer's ability to deliver in the country in the traditional high buying season in September and October.\nDeliveries in China monthly during 2021 have shown strong demand in the broader market, but some fading sales for Tesla amidst the government scrutiny. Seasonal patterns were exhibited within a low volume February followed by a strong March; however, April was weaker m/m in the prior two years compared to 2018-19. BEV market share YTD is about 8.1%.\nGraphic fromInsideEVs\nTesla's monthly trajectory has followed the market, given that the Model 3 is the second-bestselling vehicles so far this year, with the Model Y the fifth. Will truck buyers take to electric pickups?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2136175944","media":"LA Times","summary":"Ford Motor Co.’s new all-electric pickup truck will arrive next year having already secured one nota","content":"
Ford Motor Co.’s new all-electric pickup truck will arrive next year having already secured one notable admirer. “This sucker’s quick,” President Biden said from behind the wheel in Dearborn, Mich., on Tuesday after a high-torque off-the-line blast in a pre-production F-150 Lightning.

Although a classic car lover, Biden is a climate hawk whose aggressive goals for cutting greenhouse gas emissions will require large-scale electrification of U.S. transportation. So count him as receptive. The company also expects young, tech-savvy buyers to be early customers of the Lightning, set to go on sale in mid-2022.

But for Ford to achieve long-term success with its new electric line, it must eventually win over customers who think like Stan Nixon and Scott David, loyal F-series customers for decades, who must be persuaded to trade in their internal combustion engines when it’s time to buy their next truck.

Nixon lives in rural Linden, east of Sacramento. He runs a roof truss manufacturing company with his son, and cultivates 80 acres of grapes. “Probably my last four trucks have been Fords,” he said. “I switched to Chevy once but went back to Ford. The Chevy rode better, but it wasn’t tough enough.”

Nixon, 70, isn’t convinced electric trucks will be tough enough. He’s worried about range, charging times and a paucity of electric charging stations. “Sometimes I have to take runs to Reno, and I’d probably have to stop and charge up,” he said. Given that he carts around roof trusses on trailers, he has another big concern: “I know electric vehicles are fast, but I’m not sure they have the pulling power.”

Ford will have to persuade him otherwise.

David, 64, is a home-building contractor in Monee, Ill. An F-150 loyalist, he nonetheless likes the idea of an electric truck. “My nephew came over in his Tesla and gave me a ride in it,” he said. “Man, that thing was fast. And fun to drive. I’d love a truck that’s fun to drive.”

But work comes first. “I need an 8-foot bed. Plywood comes in 8-foot sheets, and I don’t want them sticking out of the tailgate.”

The first Lighting comes with only a 6-foot bed.

Older buyers such as Nixon and David aren’t the prime target for the electric pickup’s first generation, but Ford knows it needs to take seriously the concerns of experienced F-series stalwarts to appeal to anybody contemplating an electric pickup truck, especially for work use. “Our marketing team is busy crafting that campaign,” said Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford’s Americas & International Markets Group.

Ford has some time, said Jessica Caldwell, auto analyst at Edmunds. “In the long term this will be crucial for Ford” as government regulations and young buyer tastes force motor vehicle makers to go electric. “For the next few years, not so much.”

Still, Ford aims to galvanize its customer base with Lightning and hopes to add to it. The base is huge. The F-series has been around since 1948, became the U.S. market’s bestselling pickup truck in 1977 and the country’s bestselling passenger vehicle of any kind in 1981, a record it’s kept to this day. In pre-pandemic 2019, Ford sold nearly 900,000 F-series pickup trucks.

Ford is focused on two main groups for the first Lightning: what it calls young adopters drawn to new technology and commercial buyers concerned about cost.

There were doubters at Ford several years ago ago when the company started its market research into electric pickup trucks, said Ted Cannis, who headed Ford’s electrification efforts and now runs its North American commercial group. “Who would want an electric pickup truck? That was common at Ford,” he said.

The company met with pickup owners at Starbucks coffee shops around the country and showed them cardboard mockups of what would become the Lightning. According to Ford, the \"frunk\" was a big hit.

A frunk, or front trunk, is a fringe benefit of eliminating a space-hogging internal combustion engine. The Lightning's frunk measures just over 14 cubic feet. That’s a lockable spot for tools and more. “I want to put golf clubs, my guns, groceries in there,” potential customers told the market research team, Cannis said.

Questions about range were also common. The new five-seat Lightning, with a base price of $40,000, comes in two versions, a standard model with a range targeted at 230 miles and an extended-range version at 300 miles.

The base price is lower than most other electric pickups expected to be released over coming months and years. That’s because of the tremendous economies of scale that Ford gets by sharing body components with the internal combustion F-150s, put together on the same body assembly lines.

The Lightning comes standard with two motors, one on each axle, with 775 pound-feet of torque. Tesla says its upcoming Cybertruck with a two-motor drive comparable to the Lightning's will cost $50,000 before options. Startup Rivian’s electric pickup, with motors at each wheel, will go for about $70,000. The General Motors Humvee electric will come in four packages, with a base price ranging from $80,000 to $113,000. (The most expensive version is set for release this fall.) The Lightning is aimed square at the mass market.

That’s true for Ford’s other EV offerings: the so far well-received Mustang Mach-E and the electric version of Ford’s market-leading commercial vans. “We’re going to lean into our icons,” Cannis said.

He expects all those competitors and others will attract customers, even the odder-looking ones such as the Cybertruck, which he said will appeal to buyers who want to “show off” but not so much to those who use their vehicle for work.

“Our truck looks like an F-Series,” Cannis said. So count him as receptive. The company also expects young, tech-savvy buyers to be early customers of the Lightning, set to go on sale in mid-2022.But for Ford to achieve long-term success with its new electric line, it must eventually win over customers who think like Stan Nixon and Scott David, loyal F-series customers for decades, who must be persuaded to trade in their internal combustion engines when it’s time to buy their next truck.Nixon lives in rural Linden, east of Sacramento. He runs a roof truss manufacturing company with his son, and cultivates 80 acres of grapes. “Probably my last four trucks have been Fords,” he said. “I switched to Chevy once but went back to Ford. The Chevy rode better, but it wasn’t tough enough.”Nixon, 70, isn’t convinced electric trucks will be tough enough. He’s worried about range, charging times and a paucity of electric charging stations. “Sometimes I have to take runs to Reno, and I’d probably have to stop and charge up,” he said. Given that he carts around roof trusses on trailers, he has another big concern: “I know electric vehicles are fast, but I’m not sure they have the pulling power.”Ford will have to persuade him otherwise.David, 64, is a home-building contractor in Monee, Ill. An F-150 loyalist, he nonetheless likes the idea of an electric truck. “My nephew came over in his Tesla and gave me a ride in it,” he said. “Man, that thing was fast. And fun to drive. I’d love a truck that’s fun to drive.”But work comes first. “I need an 8-foot bed. Plywood comes in 8-foot sheets, and I don’t want them sticking out of the tailgate.”The first Lighting comes with only a 6-foot bed.Older buyers such as Nixon and David aren’t the prime target for the electric pickup’s first generation, but Ford knows it needs to take seriously the concerns of experienced F-series stalwarts to appeal to anybody contemplating an electric pickup truck, especially for work use. “Our marketing team is busy crafting that campaign,” said Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford’s Americas & International Markets Group.Ford has some time, said Jessica Caldwell, auto analyst at Edmunds. “In the long term this will be crucial for Ford” as government regulations and young buyer tastes force motor vehicle makers to go electric. “For the next few years, not so much.”Still, Ford aims to galvanize its customer base with Lightning and hopes to add to it. The base is huge. The F-series has been around since 1948, became the U.S. market’s bestselling pickup truck in 1977 and the country’s bestselling passenger vehicle of any kind in 1981, a record it’s kept to this day. In pre-pandemic 2019, Ford sold nearly 900,000 F-series pickup trucks.Ford is focused on two main groups for the first Lightning: what it calls young adopters drawn to new technology and commercial buyers concerned about cost. According to Ford, the \"frunk\" was a big hit.A frunk, or front trunk, is a fringe benefit of eliminating a space-hogging internal combustion engine. The Lightning's frunk measures just over 14 cubic feet. That’s a lockable spot for tools and more. “I want to put golf clubs, my guns, groceries in there,” potential customers told the market research team, Cannis said.Questions about range were also common. “We’re going to lean into our icons,” Cannis said.He expects all those competitors and others will attract customers, even the odder-looking ones such as the Cybertruck, which he said will appeal to buyers who want to “show off” but not so much to those who use their vehicle for work.“Our truck looks like an F-Series,” Cannis said. Ford customers “want it to be innovative but want it to look like a pickup truck.\"Ford has 2,300 certified dealers in the U.S., including 650 that sell and maintain commercial vehicles, he said. The Lightning battery will be bidirectional, meaning it can serve the role of a generator to keep a house running when the power goes out. Electric power will be available to power up tools and charge their batteries at work sites and campsites. The truck will operate with a smartphone key, and software updates will be delivered to the vehicle over the air. The company’s new BlueCruise hands-free highway driving feature is an option. As to electric skeptic Nixon’s concerns about pulling power, Ford said the Lightning can tow a trailer and its load up to 7,700 pounds in the standard-range model and 10,000 pounds in the extended range. Maximum payload is 2,000 pounds and 1,800 pounds, respectively.Cannis said the vehicle has undergone harsh testing in extreme environments, from sticky tar sands in Alberta, Canada, to Michigan’s severe winter roads. In particular, the company expects to be well-capitalized.\n“Net of financing proceeds from our follow-on equity offering, VW investment, and public warrant exercises, we expect to enter 2022 with greater than $1.3B in liquidity,” the company projected.\nMoreover, QuantumScape expects that it will be fully funded “through initial QS-1 production.”\nWith that, the company is looking to execute on several critical milestones:\n\nDeliver prototype samples to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) from QuantumScape’s engineering line in 2022\nProvide cells for research and development test cars from QS-0 in 2023\nEnter commercial production between 2024 and 2025\n\nThe Bottom Line on QS Stock\nHolding QS stock was enjoyable in late 2020, but not nearly as much fun in early 2021.\nPatience will still be required to stay in the trade. With a long-term vision and a sufficient appetite for risk, however, an investment in QuantumScape could offer surprisingly strong returns.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":305,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9002840609,"gmtCreate":1641974731044,"gmtModify":1676533668027,"author":{"id":"3582007616276412","authorId":"3582007616276412","name":"Tencent2040","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9d9f0b2f501bd439ef3d417e80a2b4cb","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582007616276412","authorIdStr":"3582007616276412"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yeah..
