But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.</p>\n<p>Since NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.</p>\n<p>Winner here: Ford.</p>\n<p><b>Differentiation and BaaS revenue model</b></p>\n<p>Both Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.</p>\n<p>Ford is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.</p>\n<p>The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.</p>\n<p>Ford and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.</p>\n<p>Ford’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. It's also pivoted its online retail popularity into signing up more than 200 million people to its Prime program worldwide. The fees Amazon collects from Prime help it to undercut its competition on price. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Prime members tend to spend many multiples more than non-Prime shoppers during the course of the year.</p>\n<p>But it's the company's cloud infrastructure service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), that has truly budded into a star. Since the operating margins associated with cloud infrastructure are considerably higher than what Amazon nets from retail and advertising, AWS' growth is leading to a surge in operating cash flow. Meanwhile, dozens of additional clinical trials are underway for cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which generated $7 billion in sales last year. This offers plenty of opportunity to expand Opdivo's label and pump up its pricing power.</p>\n<p>Another reason Bristol Myers Squibb is such an intriguing stock is its November 2019 acquisition of cancer and immunology company Celgene. Buying Celgene brought the blockbuster multiple-myeloma drug Revlimid into the fold. Revlimid has sustainably grown its annual sales by a double-digit percentage for more than a decade, with label expansion, longer duration of use, and pricing power all playing a role. This key treatment, which topped $12 billion in sales last year, is protected from a full onslaught of generic competition until early 2026. Payment processor <b>Mastercard</b> (NYSE:MA) might well be the safest way to take advantage of a steady uptick in consumer and enterprise spending.</p>\n<p>Mastercard isn't a cheap stock by any means -- at 36 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings consensus -- but it benefits from a simple numbers game. While economic contractions and recessions are inevitable, these periods of turbulence tend to be short-lived. By comparison, economic expansions often last many years. Buying into Mastercard allows investors to take full advantage of these long periods of economic expansion and robust spending. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Mastercard has the second-highest share of credit-card network purchase volume in the U.S., the leading market for consumption.</p>\n<p>Investors can also sleep easy with the understanding that Mastercard strictly sticks to payment facilitation. Even though some of its peers also lend, and are therefore able to generate interest income and fees during bull markets, Mastercard has avoided becoming a lender. Like Amazon, it's a stock that was added to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio by either Combs or Weschler and not Buffett.</p>\n<p>While there's no denying that Teva has its fair share of hurdles to overcome, the company's turnaround-focused CEO, Kare Schultz, has been a blessing. Since taking the helm less than four years ago, Schultz has helped shave off more than $10 billion in net debt, and he's overseen the reduction of roughly $3 billion in annual operating expenses. There's more work to do to improve Teva's balance sheet, but the company is very clearly on much firmer ground than it was back in 2016-2017.</p>\n<p>Schultz also has the potential to play peacemaker for a number of outstanding lawsuits targeting Teva's role in the opioid crisis. If this litigation can be resolved with minimal cash outlay, Teva's valuation could soar. That's meant less in the way of interest income for banks. But the latest update from the nation's central bank suggests that interest rates could begin creeping up in 2023, a year earlier than previously forecast. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive money-center bank. According to its first-quarter investor presentation, BofA would generate $8.3 billion in net interest income on a 100-basis-point shift in the interest rate yield curve. Translation: Bank of America's profits should rocket higher beginning in 2023-2024.</p>\n<p>At the same time, BofA has done an outstanding job of controlling its costs and improving its operating efficiency. Investments in digitization have resulted in higher mobile app and digital banking use, which is allowing the company to consolidate some of its branches. The most important takeaway here is that SHOP has been able to greatly increase its profitability. Why? Because it is offering its customers (merchants) more value. I reiterate my buy rating in this article and establish a $2,700 target using EWT.</p>\n<p><b>Company Overview</b></p>\n<p>Shopify Inc. recently delivered an outstanding earnings beat. While revenues grew fast and profitability increased significantly, it is important to take a deeper look at the numbers:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b56238955ec98c8ba702c68732866b5\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"1183\"><span>Source: Shopify Q1 2021</span></p>\n<p>The income statement above shows Shopify’s latest quarterly results as well as those for the first quarter of last year. Gross profit more than doubled and outpaced the growth of its operating expenses. However, the Net Income and EPS results we see here are misleading. This is the non-adjusted or non-GAAP EPS, which came out to $9,94. The real reason behind this massive jump in EPS is through an unusual item of over $1.2 billion, which is revealed in the earnings callis due to a one-time sale of an investment in a company that has recently IPO’d.</p>\n<p>Having said this, Shopify still delivered some great numbers:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88e9a6f363e14f4aadf088d9538492c1\" tg-width=\"1262\" tg-height=\"436\"><span>Source: Shopify Q1 2021</span></p>\n<p>Actual GAAP operating expenses went down from 70% of revenues this time last year to only 44%. Adjusted operating income came in at 21% of revenues compared to -2% last year, which is still very encouraging. Behind this were lower operating expenses and costs of revenues relative to the whopping 110% increase in revenues.</p>\n<p>How did Shopify do this and just how much more profitable can the company become?</p>\n<p><b>Shopify Is A (Great) Platform</b></p>\n<p>In my last article, where I compared Shopify to Amazon.com (AMZN), I made the point that Shopify is actually a platform, like Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), which means there is no ceiling to how much value it can offer.</p>\n<blockquote>\n A platform is when the economic value of everybody that uses it exceeds the value of the company that creates it. Specifically, I would point towards a few factors that have been playing out over the last few months/years that are showing great results.</p>\n<p>Firstly, in 2019 Shopify acquired 6 River Systems in order to further increase their services to merchants in the realm of fulfillment and shipping solutions. At the time, speculation over the effectiveness of this was questionable. However, as we learned in the earnings call, over half of the eligible merchants in the U.S. and Canada are using Shopify Shipping. This is very encouraging information. Shopify offers both Shopify Shipping and Shopify Fulfillment Network, which will soon be rolled out to new countries. This is just one of a few ways Shopify is adding value to their customers, which are the merchants.</p>\n<p>Secondly, I would also like to talk about the success we have seen with Shopify’s POS, Shop Pay and Shopify Payments. Shop Pay is Shopify’s payment checkout,which recently partnered with Facebook(FB) to offer this option on the Instagram and Facebook platforms. Needless to say, this has done wonders for the adoption of Shop Pay. Shopify Payments, which is used for merchants to process payments, has also increased adoption substantially.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/635bd4b182a34354142d23b6c3ef5432\" tg-width=\"1118\" tg-height=\"630\"><span>Source: Investor Presentation</span></p>\n<p>The above shows how Shopify Payments, Shop Capital and Shop Pay’s adoption has increased YoY. We also see here Shopify’s Shop, which is an app designed to act as a marketplace for consumers and is showing encouraging results.</p>\n<p>On a last note, I would like to talk about Shopify Capital. Through this service, Shopify has provided over $2 billion in capital to smaller merchants. This is an incredibly valuable service since many of these small merchants might not have access to funding otherwise. Also, looking at the financials, it’s encouraging to see that “transaction and loan losses” have come down significantly. Shopify Capital though is much more than a lending platform since it also allows merchants to have a separate business account, a business debit card and even reporting tools.</p>\n<p>The above are just some of the most significant ways Shopify is adding value to its platform. A few years ago, I had my doubts about whether Shopify would be able to successfully move into shipping or financing, but the numbers Shopify is putting out quarter after quarter show this is exactly what they are doing. Since Shopify is a platform, there is no limit to the value it can offer, which means there is no limit to the profits and profit margins it can achieve.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Shopify is a company that holds lots of potential, but it is hard to know what profit margins will look like. In this section, I am going to attempt to reach a target price for Shopify using Elliott Wave Theory.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a867c5375167aa0f87d4097f683e250d\" tg-width=\"1253\" tg-height=\"670\"><span>Source: Author’s work</span></p>\n<p>Looking at the big picture on Shopify’s chart, we can see a clear five-wave structure developing. I would say we are now in a larger degree third wave, and within this third wave, we can also see a five-wave structure developing, shown here with the blue numbers. Specifically, I’d say we are somewhere in the third wave of the third wave, which could easily target the 138.2% extension at around $2,735.</p>\n<p>The larger degree third wave though could take us up to the $4,000 region, which is where we have a nice fib confluence at the 161.8 extensions for both the larger and smaller degree moves. I’d expect a pullback in a larger degree wave four after that, and a final leg up which could take us to +$7,000. Bear in mind this is a long-term target.</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>Having said all this, we must take into account a few things. For starters, I would expect growth to slow down in the next quarter. The pandemic shifted the world to online, but in the last few months, we have seen many economies fully reopen. This will impact online spending negatively, as people will be eagerly going to bars, restaurants and engaging in activities which they couldn’t do during the lockdown. I would expect the next quarter to deliver weaker numbers, especially with the high expectations Shopify has set up after this quarter.</p>\n<p>On another note, Shopify’s revenues are inherently determined by consumer spending, and this could take a turn for the worst if, for example, we see inflation rise, or we see long-term rates increase, which will reduce the value of home equity. These are important things to take into account. Shopify is doing a great job, but there will be softer quarters and hard times ahead.</p>\n<p><b>Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>I would say this latest earnings report has made me a convinced Shopify believer. The company is executing well across the board and holds a lot of potential in both profitability and earnings. Its first-quarter results showed the company’s business continues to be buoyed by the pandemic, with sales soaring 44% year-over-year to $108.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Amazon’s guidance for the second quarter implies that it expects the momentum to continue, which should help allay investor fears that business could slow in a post-pandemic environment. The company expects to post revenue between $110 billion and $116 billion, surpassing Wall Street’s projection $108.6 billion.</p>\n<p>Crucially, Amazon confirmed in its guidance that this year’s Prime Day will take place in June, which will likely help year-over-year comparisons for revenue in the second quarter. Typically, Amazon’s annual, two-day discount bonanza takes place in July, but the company postponed the event to October last year amid pandemic-related uncertainty.</p>\n<p>When asked about the Prime Day timing, CFO Brian Olsavsky said on a call with investors: “In many areas, July is vacation month, so it might be better for customers, sellers and vendors to experiment with a different time period. We believe that it might be better timing later in [the second quarter], so that’s what we’re testing this year.”</p>\n<p>Outside of its core retail segment, Amazon’s cloud-computing and advertising businesses continue to boom. Amazon Web Servicessawnet sales of $13.5 billion during the quarter, up 32% year over year. Amazon doesn’t disclose advertising sales, but it’s included in the company’s “Other” category, which saw its revenues grow 77% year over year to $6.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos also gave a rare glimpse into how the company’s streaming business has fared during the pandemic, as stuck-at-home consumers relied on online entertainment to keep busy. “As Prime Video turns 10, over 175 million Prime members have streamed shows and movies in the past year, and streaming hours are up more than 70% year over year,” he said.</p>\n<p>Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, is a key offering of the company’s Prime subscription service, which costs $119 a year and includes a range of other benefits like free, two-day shipping. Bezos disclosed earlier this month that the company now has 200 million Prime subscribers, 50 million more than it had at the start of 2020.</p>\n<p>Physical stores revenue, which includes Whole Foods Market and other brick-and-mortar offerings like Amazon Books, continued to fall. Operating income is forecast to be between $4.5 billion and $8 billion in the second quarter, assuming $1.5 billion of costs related to Covid-19. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.</p>\n<p>Ford and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Image source: The Motley Fool.</span></p>\n<h2>Amazon</h2>\n<p>Even though Buffett's investing lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, are the architects behind Berkshire Hathaway's stake in <b>Amazon</b> (NASDAQ:AMZN), it's arguably the Buffett stock that should be bought most aggressively ahead of the second half of the year.</p>\n<p>As most folks probably know, Amazon is an e-commerce juggernaut. Based on an April report from eMarketer, the company effectively controls $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the United States. It's also pivoted its online retail popularity into signing up more than 200 million people to its Prime program worldwide. The fees Amazon collects from Prime help it to undercut its competition on price. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Prime members tend to spend many multiples more than non-Prime shoppers during the course of the year.</p>\n<p>But it's the company's cloud infrastructure service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), that has truly budded into a star. Since the operating margins associated with cloud infrastructure are considerably higher than what Amazon nets from retail and advertising, AWS' growth is leading to a surge in operating cash flow. If investors were to continue to pay the midpoint of Amazon's operating cash flow multiple over the past decade, it could hit $10,000 a share by 2025.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b18b49b2b35da2fc49e0a83b883d1c22\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Bristol Myers Squibb</h2>\n<p>Pharmaceutical stocks are money machines, and none looks to be more attractive on a valuation basis than <b>Bristol Myers Squibb</b> (NYSE:BMY).</p>\n<p>One reason to be excited about this drug developer is its organic growth potential. Eliquis, which was co-developed with <b>Pfizer</b>, has blossomed into the world's leading oral anticoagulant, with sales expected to surpass $10 billion in 2021. Meanwhile, dozens of additional clinical trials are underway for cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which generated $7 billion in sales last year. This offers plenty of opportunity to expand Opdivo's label and pump up its pricing power.</p>\n<p>Another reason Bristol Myers Squibb is such an intriguing stock is its November 2019 acquisition of cancer and immunology company Celgene. Buying Celgene brought the blockbuster multiple-myeloma drug Revlimid into the fold. Revlimid has sustainably grown its annual sales by a double-digit percentage for more than a decade, with label expansion, longer duration of use, and pricing power all playing a role. This key treatment, which topped $12 billion in sales last year, is protected from a full onslaught of generic competition until early 2026. Payment processor <b>Mastercard</b> (NYSE:MA) might well be the safest way to take advantage of a steady uptick in consumer and enterprise spending.</p>\n<p>Mastercard isn't a cheap stock by any means -- at 36 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings consensus -- but it benefits from a simple numbers game. While economic contractions and recessions are inevitable, these periods of turbulence tend to be short-lived. By comparison, economic expansions often last many years. Buying into Mastercard allows investors to take full advantage of these long periods of economic expansion and robust spending. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Mastercard has the second-highest share of credit-card network purchase volume in the U.S., the leading market for consumption.</p>\n<p>Investors can also sleep easy with the understanding that Mastercard strictly sticks to payment facilitation. Even though some of its peers also lend, and are therefore able to generate interest income and fees during bull markets, Mastercard has avoided becoming a lender. It's something you'll truly appreciate when a recession strikes. Whereas most financial stocks will be forced to set aside capital to cover credit or loan delinquencies, Mastercard won't have to. This is a big reason it bounces back from recessions quicker than most financial stocks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e4e1a1fe028efa4c966b66ef2cd466f5\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Teva Pharmaceutical Industries</h2>\n<p>If you have an appetite for turnaround plays, brand-name and generic-drug developer <b>Teva Pharmaceutical Industries</b> (NYSE:TEVA) is the stock to buy hand over fist for the second half of 2021. Like Amazon, it's a stock that was added to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio by either Combs or Weschler and not Buffett.</p>\n<p>While there's no denying that Teva has its fair share of hurdles to overcome, the company's turnaround-focused CEO, Kare Schultz, has been a blessing. Since taking the helm less than four years ago, Schultz has helped shave off more than $10 billion in net debt, and he's overseen the reduction of roughly $3 billion in annual operating expenses. There's more work to do to improve Teva's balance sheet, but the company is very clearly on much firmer ground than it was back in 2016-2017.</p>\n<p>Schultz also has the potential to play peacemaker for a number of outstanding lawsuits targeting Teva's role in the opioid crisis. If this litigation can be resolved with minimal cash outlay, Teva's valuation could soar. At just 4 times the company's projected earnings in 2021, Teva is about as cheap as a healthcare stock can get.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44a30c4dfd6886a29e22d3c6558c3e56\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Bank of America</h2>\n<p>Lastly, bank stock <b>Bank of America</b> (NYSE:BAC) has the look of a company that can be confidently bought hand over fist for the second half of 2021.</p>\n<p>For much of the past decade, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at or near historic lows. That's meant less in the way of interest income for banks. But the latest update from the nation's central bank suggests that interest rates could begin creeping up in 2023, a year earlier than previously forecast. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive money-center bank. According to its first-quarter investor presentation, BofA would generate $8.3 billion in net interest income on a 100-basis-point shift in the interest rate yield curve. Translation: Bank of America's profits should rocket higher beginning in 2023-2024.</p>\n<p>At the same time, BofA has done an outstanding job of controlling its costs and improving its operating efficiency. Investments in digitization have resulted in higher mobile app and digital banking use, which is allowing the company to consolidate some of its branches. The most important takeaway here is that SHOP has been able to greatly increase its profitability. Why? Because it is offering its customers (merchants) more value. I reiterate my buy rating in this article and establish a $2,700 target using EWT.</p>\n<p><b>Company Overview</b></p>\n<p>Shopify Inc. recently delivered an outstanding earnings beat. While revenues grew fast and profitability increased significantly, it is important to take a deeper look at the numbers:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b56238955ec98c8ba702c68732866b5\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"1183\"><span>Source: Shopify Q1 2021</span></p>\n<p>The income statement above shows Shopify’s latest quarterly results as well as those for the first quarter of last year. Gross profit more than doubled and outpaced the growth of its operating expenses. However, the Net Income and EPS results we see here are misleading. This is the non-adjusted or non-GAAP EPS, which came out to $9,94. The real reason behind this massive jump in EPS is through an unusual item of over $1.2 billion, which is revealed in the earnings callis due to a one-time sale of an investment in a company that has recently IPO’d.</p>\n<p>Having said this, Shopify still delivered some great numbers:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/88e9a6f363e14f4aadf088d9538492c1\" tg-width=\"1262\" tg-height=\"436\"><span>Source: Shopify Q1 2021</span></p>\n<p>Actual GAAP operating expenses went down from 70% of revenues this time last year to only 44%. Adjusted operating income came in at 21% of revenues compared to -2% last year, which is still very encouraging. Behind this were lower operating expenses and costs of revenues relative to the whopping 110% increase in revenues.</p>\n<p>How did Shopify do this and just how much more profitable can the company become?</p>\n<p><b>Shopify Is A (Great) Platform</b></p>\n<p>In my last article, where I compared Shopify to Amazon.com (AMZN), I made the point that Shopify is actually a platform, like Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), which means there is no ceiling to how much value it can offer.</p>\n<blockquote>\n A platform is when the economic value of everybody that uses it exceeds the value of the company that creates it. Then it's a platform.\n</blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n Source:Bill Gates\n</blockquote>\n<p>This is why, unlike many other companies, Shopify can deliver such impressive earnings growth. Specifically, I would point towards a few factors that have been playing out over the last few months/years that are showing great results.</p>\n<p>Firstly, in 2019 Shopify acquired 6 River Systems in order to further increase their services to merchants in the realm of fulfillment and shipping solutions. At the time, speculation over the effectiveness of this was questionable. However, as we learned in the earnings call, over half of the eligible merchants in the U.S. and Canada are using Shopify Shipping. This is very encouraging information. Shopify offers both Shopify Shipping and Shopify Fulfillment Network, which will soon be rolled out to new countries. This is just one of a few ways Shopify is adding value to their customers, which are the merchants.</p>\n<p>Secondly, I would also like to talk about the success we have seen with Shopify’s POS, Shop Pay and Shopify Payments. Shop Pay is Shopify’s payment checkout,which recently partnered with Facebook(FB) to offer this option on the Instagram and Facebook platforms. Needless to say, this has done wonders for the adoption of Shop Pay. Shopify Payments, which is used for merchants to process payments, has also increased adoption substantially.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/635bd4b182a34354142d23b6c3ef5432\" tg-width=\"1118\" tg-height=\"630\"><span>Source: Investor Presentation</span></p>\n<p>The above shows how Shopify Payments, Shop Capital and Shop Pay’s adoption has increased YoY. We also see here Shopify’s Shop, which is an app designed to act as a marketplace for consumers and is showing encouraging results.</p>\n<p>On a last note, I would like to talk about Shopify Capital. Through this service, Shopify has provided over $2 billion in capital to smaller merchants. This is an incredibly valuable service since many of these small merchants might not have access to funding otherwise. Also, looking at the financials, it’s encouraging to see that “transaction and loan losses” have come down significantly. Shopify Capital though is much more than a lending platform since it also allows merchants to have a separate business account, a business debit card and even reporting tools.</p>\n<p>The above are just some of the most significant ways Shopify is adding value to its platform. A few years ago, I had my doubts about whether Shopify would be able to successfully move into shipping or financing, but the numbers Shopify is putting out quarter after quarter show this is exactly what they are doing. Since Shopify is a platform, there is no limit to the value it can offer, which means there is no limit to the profits and profit margins it can achieve.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Shopify is a company that holds lots of potential, but it is hard to know what profit margins will look like. I would say we are now in a larger degree third wave, and within this third wave, we can also see a five-wave structure developing, shown here with the blue numbers. Specifically, I’d say we are somewhere in the third wave of the third wave, which could easily target the 138.2% extension at around $2,735.</p>\n<p>The larger degree third wave though could take us up to the $4,000 region, which is where we have a nice fib confluence at the 161.8 extensions for both the larger and smaller degree moves. I’d expect a pullback in a larger degree wave four after that, and a final leg up which could take us to +$7,000. Bear in mind this is a long-term target.</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>Having said all this, we must take into account a few things. For starters, I would expect growth to slow down in the next quarter. The pandemic shifted the world to online, but in the last few months, we have seen many economies fully reopen. This will impact online spending negatively, as people will be eagerly going to bars, restaurants and engaging in activities which they couldn’t do during the lockdown. I would expect the next quarter to deliver weaker numbers, especially with the high expectations Shopify has set up after this quarter.</p>\n<p>On another note, Shopify’s revenues are inherently determined by consumer spending, and this could take a turn for the worst if, for example, we see inflation rise, or we see long-term rates increase, which will reduce the value of home equity. These are important things to take into account. Shopify is doing a great job, but there will be softer quarters and hard times ahead.</p>\n<p><b>Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>I would say this latest earnings report has made me a convinced Shopify believer. The company is executing well across the board and holds a lot of potential in both profitability and earnings. The most important takeaway here is that SHOP has been able to greatly increase its profitability. Why? Because it is offering its customers (merchants) more value. I reiterate my buy rating in this article and establish a $2,700 target using EWT.\nCompany Overview\nShopify Inc. recently delivered an outstanding earnings beat. While revenues grew fast and profitability increased significantly, it is important to take a deeper look at the numbers:\nSource: Shopify Q1 2021\nThe income statement above shows Shopify’s latest quarterly results as well as those for the first quarter of last year. Gross profit more than doubled and outpaced the growth of its operating expenses. However, the Net Income and EPS results we see here are misleading. This is the non-adjusted or non-GAAP EPS, which came out to $9,94. The real reason behind this massive jump in EPS is through an unusual item of over $1.2 billion, which is revealed in the earnings callis due to a one-time sale of an investment in a company that has recently IPO’d.\nHaving said this, Shopify still delivered some great numbers:\nSource: Shopify Q1 2021\nActual GAAP operating expenses went down from 70% of revenues this time last year to only 44%. Adjusted operating income came in at 21% of revenues compared to -2% last year, which is still very encouraging. Behind this were lower operating expenses and costs of revenues relative to the whopping 110% increase in revenues.\nHow did Shopify do this and just how much more profitable can the company become?\nShopify Is A (Great) Platform\nIn my last article, where I compared Shopify to Amazon.com (AMZN), I made the point that Shopify is actually a platform, like Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), which means there is no ceiling to how much value it can offer.\n\n A platform is when the economic value of everybody that uses it exceeds the value of the company that creates it. Then it's a platform.\n\n\n Source:Bill Gates\n\nThis is why, unlike many other companies, Shopify can deliver such impressive earnings growth. Specifically, I would point towards a few factors that have been playing out over the last few months/years that are showing great results.\nFirstly, in 2019 Shopify acquired 6 River Systems in order to further increase their services to merchants in the realm of fulfillment and shipping solutions. At the time, speculation over the effectiveness of this was questionable. However, as we learned in the earnings call, over half of the eligible merchants in the U.S. and Canada are using Shopify Shipping. This is very encouraging information. Shopify offers both Shopify Shipping and Shopify Fulfillment Network, which will soon be rolled out to new countries. This is just one of a few ways Shopify is adding value to their customers, which are the merchants.\nSecondly, I would also like to talk about the success we have seen with Shopify’s POS, Shop Pay and Shopify Payments. Shop Pay is Shopify’s payment checkout,which recently partnered with Facebook(FB) to offer this option on the Instagram and Facebook platforms. Needless to say, this has done wonders for the adoption of Shop Pay. Shopify Payments, which is used for merchants to process payments, has also increased adoption substantially.\nSource: Investor Presentation\nThe above shows how Shopify Payments, Shop Capital and Shop Pay’s adoption has increased YoY. We also see here Shopify’s Shop, which is an app designed to act as a marketplace for consumers and is showing encouraging results.\nOn a last note, I would like to talk about Shopify Capital. Through this service, Shopify has provided over $2 billion in capital to smaller merchants. This is an incredibly valuable service since many of these small merchants might not have access to funding otherwise. Also, looking at the financials, it’s encouraging to see that “transaction and loan losses” have come down significantly. Shopify Capital though is much more than a lending platform since it also allows merchants to have a separate business account, a business debit card and even reporting tools.\nThe above are just some of the most significant ways Shopify is adding value to its platform. A few years ago, I had my doubts about whether Shopify would be able to successfully move into shipping or financing, but the numbers Shopify is putting out quarter after quarter show this is exactly what they are doing. Since Shopify is a platform, there is no limit to the value it can offer, which means there is no limit to the profits and profit margins it can achieve.\nValuation\nShopify is a company that holds lots of potential, but it is hard to know what profit margins will look like.
