It's the fourth consecutive quarter the retailer enjoyed higher sales, indicating its vaunted turnaround strategy is on track.
\n
While the home goods outlet did miss analyst forecasts on earnings, posting adjusted profits of $0.05 per share, $0.03 less than predicted, it now sees comparable-store sales for the rest of the year being stronger than thought. Management raised guidance for comps to low single-digit-percentage growth compared to its prior outlook for flat comps.
\n
It also raised its full-year net sales guidance to a range of $8.2 billion to $8.4 billion from $8 billion to $8.2 billion. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) are also now forecast to be higher, too, from $520 million to $540 million, up from $500 million to $525 million. For the first time since the pandemic, it offered adjusted profit guidance of $1.40 to $1.55 per share.
\n
A banner quarter
\n
There's a reason Bed Bath & Beyond did so well: It's sticking to what it knows best. The retailer has jettisoned all of its tacked-on businesses and is instead focusing on its best, core opportunities.
\n
The retailer considers its namesake Bed Bath & Beyond stores, buybuy BABY, Harmon Face Values, and Decorist to be its core. Net sales at the quartet of chains were up 73% for the period, but the Bed Bath & Beyond banner was really the star, with revenue nearly doubling.
\n
Obviously it is going up against very easy comparables from last year when its stores were largely closed for the quarter, but before the pandemic hit, it was still questionable as to whether consumers would respond to the turnaround strategy. The company had only just cleaned house in the c-suite and was just launching a drive to return its business to growth when the COVID-19 outbreak struck, putting its plans on hold.
\n
The four consecutive quarters of growing sales seems to indicate it's working, and betting against the home goods giant was a poor decision.
\n
Holding the bag
\n
It seems a number of short-sellers did see the writing on the wall and closed out their positions recently. The number of shares sold short fell from a peak of 33.3 million shares as of May 28, more than were even sold short during the height of the meme stock frenzy in January, to 20.4 million shares in mid-June.
\n
That equates to almost 20% of Bed Bath & Beyond's float being sold short, still a significant percentage, even if it is 38% below what it had been two weeks prior.
\n
Yet short-sellers have not fared well against the retail investor army that seeks to defend such beaten-down stocks. While those defenders hold a number of misconceptions about exactly what they're doing, they've still trounced the shorts.
\n
The short story
\n
Bed Bath & Beyond's stock is up almost 7% over the past month and 68% higher year to date. Over the last 12 months, shares of the retailer have rallied to gains of 176%. That's likely part of the reason Bed Bath & Beyond's short interest has dropped as it has, though if some investors looked at the prospects for its continued success they might have gotten out even sooner.
\n
The retail industry is still in a tough spot, and Bed Bath & Beyond is not out of the woods, either. Buffett said the 58-year-old executive will take over the $630 billion business when he steps down.

Abel’s more than two-decade track record at the conglomerate includes high-profile dealmaking and overseeing its sprawling non-insurance businesses, from the BNSF railroad to Dairy Queen. But Buffett’s aphorisms and stature as the Oracle of Omaha have earned him a reputation as the avuncular face of capitalism, and secured him a following that Abel may find hard to replicate.

“There’s only one Warren Buffett,” David Kass, a professor of finance at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. What to Know.

Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO posted better than expected first quarter results. But the global automotive microchip shortage will hit production in the coming months.

NIO (ticker: NIO) is a highly valued, high-growth stock. Now NIO bulls have to decide whether solid earnings will trump the growth hiccup or whether the chip shortage can hurt the company in the long run.

NIO lost 23 cents a share on an adjusted, non-GAAP basis, from $1.2 billion in sales. Wall Street was looking for a comparable 84 cent loss from $1.1 billion in sales. NIO’s corporate gross profit margin came in at 19.5%, about 3 percentage points better than analysts projected and up from negative 12% a year ago. First quarter results look solid.

The stock isn’t moving though. NIO reported numbers at 5:30 p.m. eastern time and not a lot of stock is trading after hours. NIO shares closed down 5.3% in Thursday trading. TheS&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 0.7%.

“NIO started the year of 2021 with a new quarterly delivery record of 20,060 vehicles in the first quarter,” said CEO William Bin Li in the company’s news release. “The overall demand for our products continues to be quite strong, but the supply chain is still facing significant challenges due to the semiconductor shortage.”

Management called the chip situation “very severe” on its conference call and projected 21,000 to 22,000 vehicle deliveries for the second quarter and sales of about $1.3 billion. The Street is projecting $1.2 billion in sales. But the unit delivery guidance is a little lower than Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu had expected.

For the full year, Yu is modeling 95,000 deliveries. With about 42,000 deliveries likely for the first half of 2021, the resolution of the global chip shortage will go a long way to deciding whether or not NIO can reach Yu’s number.

Yu rates NIO shares Buy and has a $60 price target for the stock.

The overall quarter feels a little like Ford Motor‘s (F) quarter, which was reported Wednesday. Ford reported sales and earnings far better than Wall Street projected. Unit volumes were below the company’s internal projections, but improving vehicle mix boosted sales beyond Street projections. Ford prioritized making higher-end vehicles in the face of limited chip supply. Looking ahead, Ford said the impact of the chip shortage would be at the high end of the company’s initial $1 billion to $2.5 billion cost guidance.

Ford stock close down 9.4% Thursday, the day after the Wednesday evening report. The NIO second-quarter guidance isn’t as surprising as Ford’s. And NIO doesn’t have full-year guidance. But calling NIO’s stock price reaction is difficult.

Ford trades for less than 7 times estimated 2022 earnings. NIO is expected to become profitable on a full-year basis in 2022. Yet it's clearly on the road to recovery, and that will undoubtedly have investors cheering and the short-sellers licking their wounds.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":144,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":106162126,"gmtCreate":1620094084465,"gmtModify":1704338557243,"author":{"id":"3582105833372576","authorId":"3582105833372576","name":"HenryCWK","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582105833372576","authorIdStr":"3582105833372576"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wah, Pls comment","listText":"Wah, Pls comment","text":"Wah, Pls comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/106162126","repostId":"1194411564","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1194411564","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1620090960,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1194411564?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-04 09:16","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"Abel’s ‘Extreme Competence’ Seen as Ticket to Following Buffett","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1194411564","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Executive will inherit a sprawling $630 billion conglomerateAge was a determining factor in picking ","content":"

Executive will inherit a sprawling $630 billion conglomerate

Age was a determining factor in picking Abel for the top role

Replacing the irreplaceable Warren Buffett won’t be easy.

But that’s the path ahead for Greg Abel, aBerkshire Hathaway Inc.vice chairman who was publicly identified as the successor to America’s most renowned investor for the first time on Monday. Non-GAAP profits were $1.02 a share, well above the company’s forecast of 55 cents to 75 cents.
\n
The company said the strong results reflected “increasing momentum” for both “energy assisted drives” and current generation solid-state drives, as well as “improving NAND flash pricing trends.”
\n
For the June quarter, Western sees revenue of $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion, with non-GAAP profits of $1.30 to $1.60 a share, above the Street consensus forecast at $4.3 billion and $1.02 a share.
\n
Western said its client devices business had revenue of $2 billion, up 10% from a year ago, driven by “continued strength in notebook and desktop PC demand, as well the ramp of new game consoles.
\n
Data center devices had revenue of $1.2 billion, down 19%, although the company said it had sequential growth with its NVMe (nonvolatile memory express, a connection standard for certain memory devices) enterprise solid-state drives at an unspecified “cloud titan.” (That is apparently a reference to one of the big three cloud companies—Amazon,Microsoftor Google.)
