Producer","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1141172240","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Fourth-quarter production came in below the average estimateNickel output recovered from the strike-","content":"

Fourth-quarter production came in below the average estimate

Nickel output recovered from the strike-hit previous quarter

Rio Tinto Group’s hold on the title of world No. 1 iron ore producer is safe -- at least for another quarter.

Vale SA was expected to overtake its main rival in the fourth quarter, but reported a disappointing 82.5 million metric tons of the steel-making ingredient after heavy rains restricted operations in northern Brazil. That compares with 84.1 million tons for Rio Tinto.

Vale lost the title of top supplier in the wake of a tailings dam disaster three years ago. After focusing on safety, it has slowly brought back production while Rio Tinto has suffered from its own rain disruptions and the fallout from a cultural heritage fiasco.

Now the two firms are level pegging, even delivering identical 2022 guidance of 320-335 million tons, although Rio Tinto’s is for shipments and Vale’s is for production. On a quarterly basis, the measure rose 1% versus a forecast 0.7% gain.

In response, Australia’s benchmark three-year bond yields surged as much as nine basis points to 1.44%, the highest level since April 2019, as traders bet rates hikes will come sooner than the RBA has indicated. The gain eased to seven basis at 12:44 p.m. in Sydney while the currency was marginally higher.

The result adds ballast to expectations the RBA will scrap its bond-buying program at next Tuesday’s meeting and potentially opens the door to rate rises this year, something Governor Philip Lowe had previously all-but ruled out. Money markets are now pricing in a quarter-point rate rise by May, while economists are increasingly landing on rate liftoff in August.

Australia had previously been on the periphery of the global inflation story, allowing its central bank to remain dovish.

But now the global inflation battleground has made its way Down Under, reflecting persistent supply chain disruptions and energy shortfalls. These have already prompted New Zealand and the U.K. to tighten policy and the Federal Reserve is expected to begin raising rates soon.

Today’s data “seals the fate of the end of quantitative easing next week and change of forward guidance to earlier lift off from RBA’s end-23 start,” said $Royal Bank of Canada(RY-T)$’s Su-Lin Ong. “Price pressures look broad-based and while some are Covid-19/supply chain-related, others are not and are a function of a firmer economy and labor market.”

The RBA holds its first board meeting of the year on Feb. 1, where it is due to decide the fate of its A$4 billion ($2.9 billion) a week purchase program. It will publish a quarterly update of economic forecasts three days later on Feb. 4.

What Bloomberg Economics Says:

“A stronger-than-expected acceleration in inflation leaves the Reserve Bank of Australia facing a question confounding many central banks -- what should monetary policy do, if anything, to counter faster price gains driven by supply disruptions.”

--James McIntyre, economist.

In his last speech of 2021, Lowe reiterated rates won’t rise until actual inflation, not forecast, is sustainably within the 2-3% target. He cited RBA forecasts showing underlying inflation will only reach the mid-point of the band in late 2023, suggesting that was a more likely timing for rate liftoff.

Those inflation forecasts are very likely to be revised higher in next week’s Statement on Monetary Policy.

Prashant Newnaha, Singapore-based macro strategist at TD Securities, brought forward his rate call to August from the fourth quarter previously.

“By then the RBA will have another two more CPI prints to assess the CPI trend, which is likely to remain elevated as the post lockdown recovery gains traction.” Newnaha said. Money markets are now pricing in a quarter-point rate rise by May, while economists are increasingly landing on rate liftoff in August.Australia had previously been on the periphery of the global inflation story, allowing its central bank to remain dovish. But now the global inflation battleground has made its way Down Under, reflecting persistent supply chain disruptions and energy shortfalls. These have already prompted New Zealand and the U.K. to tighten policy and the Federal Reserve is expected to begin raising rates soon.Today’s data “seals the fate of the end of quantitative easing next week and change of forward guidance to earlier lift off from RBA’s end-23 start,” said $Royal Bank of Canada(RY-T)$’s Su-Lin Ong. “Price pressures look broad-based and while some are Covid-19/supply chain-related, others are not and are a function of a firmer economy and labor market.”The RBA holds its first board meeting of the year on Feb. 1, where it is due to decide the fate of its A$4 billion ($2.9 billion) a week purchase program. It will publish a quarterly update of economic forecasts three days later on Feb. 4.What Bloomberg Economics Says:“A stronger-than-expected acceleration in inflation leaves the Reserve Bank of Australia facing a question confounding many central banks -- what should monetary policy do, if anything, to counter faster price gains driven by supply disruptions.”--James McIntyre, economist. Those inflation forecasts are very likely to be revised higher in next week’s Statement on Monetary Policy.Prashant Newnaha, Singapore-based macro strategist at TD Securities, brought forward his rate call to August from the fourth quarter previously.“By then the RBA will have another two more CPI prints to assess the CPI trend, which is likely to remain elevated as the post lockdown recovery gains traction.” Newnaha said. He sees a follow-up move in November and four hikes in 2023 which would take the cash rate to 1.5%.Other DetailsHeadline consumer price index advanced 3.5% in the fourth quarter from a year earlier compared with economists’ estimates of a 3.2% gain.Inflation gains were led by dwelling purchases and fuelTradables prices, which are typically impacted by the currency and global factors, rose 4.9% from a year earlierNon-tradable prices, which are largely affected by domestic variables like utilities and rents, advanced 2.8% on the year","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":496,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9090389858,"gmtCreate":1643082676124,"gmtModify":1676533772595,"author":{"id":"3582108668867504","authorId":"3582108668867504","name":"Lonewolf","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/57b5036bdbe3813d34ad83638f24538a","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582108668867504","authorIdStr":"3582108668867504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9090389858","repostId":"2206888965","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2206888965","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1643064873,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2206888965?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-25 06:54","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street Reverses, Ends Higher in Late Session Rally","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2206888965","media":"Reuters","summary":"Kohl's surges as Sycamore, Acacia show takeover interestIBM climbs in after hours trading after post","content":"

Kohl's surges as Sycamore, Acacia show takeover interest

IBM climbs in after hours trading after posting results

Indexes up: Dow 0.29%, S&P 0.28%, Nasdaq 0.63%

NEW YORK, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Wall Street bounced back from a steep sell-off late in the session to close higher on Monday, with bargain hunters pushing the indexes into positive territory by closing bell.

The S&P 500 earlier came close to confirming a correction by appearing on track to close more than 10% down from its most recent all-time high reached on Jan 3 as investors focused on concerns about an increasingly hawkish Federal Reserve and geopolitical tensions.

The S&P 500 recovered 4.3 percentage points from its session low to it closing level, the largest such swing since March 26, 2020, when Wall Street was bouncing back from the global slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier in the day, the indexes were all more than 2% lower. They are ready to book their spring plans. They know Omicron isn't going to be a threat to them at that point," he said.

Bastian's comments followed therelease of quarterly resultsthat showed a profit for Delta (DAL) for the second consecutive quarter. The bottom line beat expectations, boosted by revenue that jumped nearly 140% from last year's COVID-depressed figures.

The top-line figure also represents about 74% of the revenue the company posted in the same period of 2019, before the pandemic began impacting results. Leisure demand has been strong for the airline but corporate bookings have yet to return to pre-COVID levels.

Commenting on Omicron, Bastian reported that flight cancellations have come "way down" in the last week as the number of staff members coming down with the strain of COVID declines.

He revealed that the spread of the virus led to a difficult holiday season, as 8,000 employees were infected over a short period of time -- the same span that included "the busiest travel that we have seen in two years."

"The confluence of those two events could not have happened at a worse time," he said, noting that Omicron led to levels of cancellations in the airline industry that were "unheard of."

"We believe the worst is behind us and we just need to navigate to get through this as a society," he said.

Looking at corporate travel, which has lagged behind leisure travel in its post-COVID recovery, the Delta CEO predicted that Omicron caused a 60-90 day "pause" in the recovery of the business market.

Asked about oil prices, Bastian refused to speculate about where the cost of jet fuel would go in 2022 but assured investors that "we're prepared." He added that these preparations included a plan if oil prices top $100 a barrel.

"We've seen it many times in the past and we've figured out what we have to do to recover that [increase in oil prices]," he said. "Ultimately, it comes down to pricing."

Delta soared to a 52-week high of $52.28 last April but drifted off that level as it became clear that the COVID recovery would be bumpier than previously hoped. Shares plunged to a 52-week low of $33.40 in early November as the first headlines about Omicron raised fears of renewed travel restrictions.

As the latest strain of the virus has proved milder than previous variants, DAL has recovered. Buoyed by the earnings news, DAL climbed in Thursday's early trading. The stock was up more than 1% to $41.16 at about 9:45 a.m. ET.

Still, since its peak in April, the stock has fallen about 17%, compared to a nearly 19% advance in the S&P 500.

However, this is actually a better performance than many of its closest peers. They are ready to book their spring plans. They know Omicron isn't going to be a threat to them at that point,\" he said.Bastian's comments followed therelease of quarterly resultsthat showed a profit for Delta (DAL) for the second consecutive quarter. The bottom line beat expectations, boosted by revenue that jumped nearly 140% from last year's COVID-depressed figures. The top-line figure also represents about 74% of the revenue the company posted in the same period of 2019, before the pandemic began impacting results. Leisure demand has been strong for the airline but corporate bookings have yet to return to pre-COVID levels.Commenting on Omicron, Bastian reported that flight cancellations have come \"way down\" in the last week as the number of staff members coming down with the strain of COVID declines. He revealed that the spread of the virus led to a difficult holiday season, as 8,000 employees were infected over a short period of time -- the same span that included \"the busiest travel that we have seen in two years.\"\"The confluence of those two events could not have happened at a worse time,\" he said, noting that Omicron led to levels of cancellations in the airline industry that were \"unheard of.\"\"We believe the worst is behind us and we just need to navigate to get through this as a society,\" he said.Looking at corporate travel, which has lagged behind leisure travel in its post-COVID recovery, the Delta CEO predicted that Omicron caused a 60-90 day \"pause\" in the recovery of the business market.Asked about oil prices, Bastian refused to speculate about where the cost of jet fuel would go in 2022 but assured investors that \"we're prepared.\" He added that these preparations included a plan if oil prices top $100 a barrel.\"We've seen it many times in the past and we've figured out what we have to do to recover that [increase in oil prices],\" he said. \"Ultimately, it comes down to pricing.\"Delta soared to a 52-week high of $52.28 last April but drifted off that level as it became clear that the COVID recovery would be bumpier than previously hoped. ET.Still, since its peak in April, the stock has fallen about 17%, compared to a nearly 19% advance in the S&P 500.However, this is actually a better performance than many of its closest peers. American(NASDAQ:AAL), United(NASDAQ:UAL)and Southwest(NYSE:LUV)have all shown even bigger overall declines since April. LUV had the worst of these, with a retreat of 26%. Each of Wall Street's main indexes was poised for its sharpest three-year surge since 1997-99.The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 90.55 points, or 0.25%, to 36,398.08, the S&P 500 lost 14.33 points, or 0.30%, to 4,778.73 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 24.65 points, or 0.16%, to 15,741.56.Four of the 11 major S&P 500 sector indexes traded higher, led by the real estate sector.Investors cheered a U.S. Labor Department report that the number of Americans filing for new unemployment claims dropped to a seasonally adjusted 198,000 in the week leading up to Christmas, from a revised 206,000 a week earlier. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast weekly applications would rise to 208,000.In other strong U.S. data, the Chicago purchasing managers' index (PMI) delivered a print of 63.1, a monthly increase of 1.3 points and 1.1 points above consensus.A PMI number over 50 signifies expanded activity over the previous month.Equities have rallied recently on some of the thinnest trading volumes that U.S. stock exchanges have seen due to the holidays. They see the correction, and they see that it's a healthy part of the markets,\" said Jake Dollarhide, chief executive officer of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa, Oklahoma.\"When everything started selling off, that got a lot of people's attention, so I think we had what I would call intraday capitulation, getting some of this easy money out of the market,\" Dollarhide added. The U.S. Federal Reserve is due to convene its two-day monetary policy meeting on Tuesday, and market participants will be parsing its concluding statement and Chairman Jerome Powell's subsequent Q&A session for clues as to the central bank's timeline for hiking key interest rates to combat inflation.\"I think investors are over-assuming a very hawkish stance by the Fed,\" said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist of CFRA Research in New York. \"Granted, inflation is high and is likely to get higher before it starts to decline. Specifically we see the headline CPI topping at 7.3% for both January and February, but then coming down to 3.5% by year-end.\"In a sign that geopolitical tensions are heating up, NATO announced it was putting forces on standby to prepare for a potential conflictbetween Russia and Ukraine. The threat of potential conflict in that region helped U.S. Treasury yields dip, pausing their recent upward climb, which has pressured stocks in recent months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 99.13 points, or 0.29%, to 34,364.5, the S&P 500 gained 12.19 points, or 0.28%, to 4,410.13 and the Nasdaq Composite added 86.21 points, or 0.63%, to 13,855.13.All 11 major sectors of the S&P 500 spent most of the trading day deep in red territory, but by market close all but three were green. Consumer discretionary enjoyed the largest percentage gain.Fourth-quarter reporting season is in full swing, with 65 of the companies in the S&P 500 having posted results. Of those, 77% have come in above expectations, according to data from Refinitiv. On aggregate, analysts now see S&P 500 annual EPS growth of 23.7%, per Refinitiv.A series of disappointing earnings from big banks and, notably, lockdown darling Netflix Inc have overshadowed many better-than-expected results.Shares of International Business Machines gained about 2% in after-hours trading after the company beat revenue expectations on the strength of its cloud and consulting businesses.Kohl's Corp surged after Reuters reported private equity firm Sycamore Partners is preparing to make a bid for the department store chain days after a consortium backed by activist investment firm Starboard Value proposed a buyout.Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.49-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.08-to-1 ratio favored decliners. The S&P 500 posted 1 new 52-week highs and 31 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded four new highs and 1,319 new lows.Volume on U.S. exchanges was 18.42 billion shares, compared with the 10.95 billion average over the last 20 trading days.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":563,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9086830955,"gmtCreate":1650429608078,"gmtModify":1676534722955,"author":{"id":"3582108668867504","authorId":"3582108668867504","name":"Lonewolf","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/57b5036bdbe3813d34ad83638f24538a","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582108668867504","authorIdStr":"3582108668867504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9086830955","repostId":"2228912985","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":360,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9090473248,"gmtCreate":1643252994889,"gmtModify":1676533791048,"author":{"id":"3582108668867504","authorId":"3582108668867504","name":"Lonewolf","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/57b5036bdbe3813d34ad83638f24538a","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582108668867504","authorIdStr":"3582108668867504"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9090473248","repostId":"1193570367","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1193570367","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1643252791,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1193570367?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-27 11:06","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nokia Stock: Could The Meme Saga Repeat In 2022?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1193570367","media":"TheStreet","summary":"This week marks the first anniversary of Nokia’s meme journey. Could shares of the Finnish tech company spike once again in 2022, as they did for a moment last year?

Around one year ago to the day, Nokia joined the select group of meme stocks. In a matter of days in January 2021, Nokia stock rallied from $3.87 to $6.55, nearly doubling in value for not enough of a business fundamental reason.

Even before the start of February 2021, however, NOK had collapsed back to $4.50 apiece. Since then, the stock has traded only modestly higher. Today, shares are worth around $5.50.

Is this meme story finally over? Or could NOK rally on the back of another “meme attack” in 2022? Arguably, it all started with a bullishreportfrom an analyst published on January 25, calling Nokia undervalued relative to rival Ericsson.

Of course, the research report alone could not have been enough to suddenly turn bears into bulls. What probably followed was a snowball effect that turned into an avalanche of retail investors following Nokia’s rally and putting money behind the meme story.

The chart below shows how popular the term “Nokia stock” became on Google during the week of January 24. Popularity picked up on the 27th and peaked on the 28th, the same day that NOK began to correct sharply: single-day loss of 28%.

Figure 2: Nokia stock on Google search.

What probably justified such a bullish move was Nokia’s elevated short interest.According to Seeking Alpha, the number of shares shorted roughly tripled from 20 million in March 2020 to 60 million in January 2021. That was a peak not reached since 2014.

With such bearishness towards NOK, bulls took advantage of increased popularity to try and force a short squeeze. Maybe, even if for a day or two only, the strategy worked.

Are the ingredients in place?

In my view, Nokia would need three key ingredients to come under “meme attack” in 2022 once again: (1) a spark, such as a positive earnings day or a bullish analyst report; (2) enough bears to attract the interest of bulls willing to take the other side of the bet, and (3) retail investors’ interest in putting money to work.

The first piece above may be the easiest to happen. Nokia continues to be a likely beneficiary of increased spending in 5G infrastructure. Recently, Morgan Stanley called it a top pick for 2022 for this and other reasons. Other bulls could come out in support of Nokia stock too.

The other two ingredients are less likely to be found. On the second point, Nokia’s short interest has dropped to around 40 million shares — although it is up from 25 million in April 2021, after bears were “flushed out” during the original meme rally.

On the third point, meme mania in general has lost steam in 2022. This is probably because of the end of fiscal stimulus that put money in the pockets of speculators in 2020 and 2021, and a market-wide correction that has taken a toll on other meme stocks this year and dampened enthusiasm.

Betting on Nokia stock for the long run might make sense, and a debate could be had about the investment opportunity here. But otherwise, I find it very unlikely that the stock will benefit from another meme attack in the foreseeable future.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Nokia Stock: Could The Meme Saga Repeat In 2022?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNokia Stock: Could The Meme Saga Repeat In 2022?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-27 11:06 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
This week marks the first anniversary of Nokia’s meme journey. Shares of the artificial intelligence personal loan company Upstart(NASDAQ:UPST) rose nearly 5% today, while shares of the digital financial services company SoFi(NASDAQ:SOFI)and fintech MoneyLion(NYSE:ML)both rose more than 10%.

So what

Weekly jobless claims for the week ending Dec. 25 totaled 198,000, beating the 205,000 forecast, which is near the lowest level in 50 years.

Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC, wrote in a research note:

Initial claims are extremely low, and continued claims are low and steadily declining. Demand for labor is very strong and workers are in short supply, so businesses are not laying off employees. Those workers who do find themselves unemployed can quickly find new jobs.

On the one hand, the news is somewhat positive because it shows that businesses still seem to be operating like normal and not laying off workers or shutting down after the discovery of the extremely contagious omicron COVID-19 variant. Still, that doesn't mean there won't be any impact from omicron in the near term.

" ... rising coronavirus cases due to the omicron could put the labor force recovery on hold, at least over the next couple of months," Faucher added.

The jobless claims report seemed to provide a good excuse for investors to buy back into popular fintech stocks that have really been hammered over the past few months.

Investors first began to turn bearish on fintech stocks once the Federal Reserve indicated that it would speed up the tapering of its bond purchases, and potentially look to raise the federal funds rate multiple times in 2022 due to high inflation. For fintech companies specifically, higher interest rates can increase funding costs and default rates, and slow demand if inflation is bad enough. The flip side is that higher interest rates typically allow lenders to originate loans with higher interest rates as well.

Then omicron hit and investors feared how the variant or future similar variants might impact economic growth in 2022. Goldman Sachs recently cut its projection for gross domestic product slightly in each of the first three quarters of 2022.

Now what

Valuations in the fintech sector had certainly run hot for most of this year, with Upstart in October trading at close to 40 times 2022 revenue. Even after the sell-off, Upstart currently trades around 66 times the current average earnings estimate for 2022. Valuations like this don't leave a lot of room for error, so I think a sell-off for some of these highly valued fintech stocks was certainly warranted.

Valuations now look a little better, but given that market conditions could be difficult next year, especially with the strong potential for rate hikes, I would much rather own fintech stocks that have more reasonable valuations and that are potentially undervalued.

Based on its projections, MoneyLion looks more reasonably valued right now. But seeing as the company went public through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), and SPACs have seen a good deal of skepticism in recent months, investors are likely going to wait to see that actual results are in line with projections before potentially buying in.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Shares of Upstart, SoFi, and MoneyLion All Rose Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Shares of Upstart, SoFi, and MoneyLion All Rose Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-31 11:15 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedShares of many fintech stocks bounced higher on the second-to-last day of trading in 2021, which seemed to be related to a jobless claims report that was better than expected.
