However, its weak financial performance indicators makes us a bit doubtful if that trend could continue. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Venture's ROE today.

Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.

Check out our latest analysis for Venture

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Venture is:

9.5% = S$271m ÷ S$2.8b (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. So, this means that for every SGD1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of SGD0.10.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or \"retains\", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.

A Side By Side comparison of Venture's Earnings Growth And 9.5% ROE

At first glance, Venture's ROE doesn't look very promising. However, given that the company's ROE is similar to the average industry ROE of 11%, we may spare it some thought. Having said that, Venture's five year net income decline rate was 2.5%. Remember, the company's ROE is a bit low to begin with. Hence, this goes some way in explaining the shrinking earnings.

However, when we compared Venture's growth with the industry we found that while the company's earnings have been shrinking, the industry has seen an earnings growth of 9.8% in the same period. This is quite worrisome.

SGX:V03 Past Earnings Growth March 28th 2024

Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Has the market priced in the future outlook for V03? You can find out in our latest intrinsic value infographic research report.

Is Venture Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?

Venture's declining earnings is not surprising given how the company is spending most of its profits in paying dividends, judging by its three-year median payout ratio of 70% (or a retention ratio of 30%). With only a little being reinvested into the business, earnings growth would obviously be low or non-existent.

Moreover, Venture has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 70% of its profits over the next three years. Therefore, the company's future ROE is also not expected to change by much with analysts predicting an ROE of 11%.

Conclusion

On the whole, Venture's performance is quite a big let-down. The company has seen a lack of earnings growth as a result of retaining very little profits and whatever little it does retain, is being reinvested at a very low rate of return. With that said, we studied the latest analyst forecasts and found that while the company has shrunk its earnings in the past, analysts expect its earnings to grow in the future.

One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at AEM Holdings (SGX:AWX) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on AEM Holdings is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.032 = S$17m ÷ (S$709m - S$178m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

So, AEM Holdings has an ROCE of 3.2%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Semiconductor industry average of 8.1%.

Check out our latest analysis for AEM Holdings

SGX:AWX Return on Capital Employed March 1st 2024

In the above chart we have measured AEM Holdings' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free analyst report for AEM Holdings .

What Does the ROCE Trend For AEM Holdings Tell Us?

In terms of AEM Holdings' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 3.2% from 47% five years ago. And considering revenue has dropped while employing more capital, we'd be cautious. This could mean that the business is losing its competitive advantage or market share, because while more money is being put into ventures, it's actually producing a lower return - \"less bang for their buck\" per se.

What We Can Learn From AEM Holdings' ROCE

We're a bit apprehensive about AEM Holdings because despite more capital being deployed in the business, returns on that capital and sales have both fallen. Yet despite these poor fundamentals, the stock has gained a huge 100% over the last five years, so investors appear very optimistic. In any case, the current underlying trends don't bode well for long term performance so unless they reverse, we'd start looking elsewhere.

AEM Holdings could be trading at an attractive price in other respects, so you might find our free intrinsic value estimation for AWX on our platform quite valuable.

For those who like to invest in solid companies, check out this free list of companies with solid balance sheets and high returns on equity.

Valuation is complex, but we're helping make it simple.

Find out whether AEM Holdings is potentially over or undervalued by checking out our comprehensive analysis, which includes fair value estimates, risks and warnings, dividends, insider transactions and financial health.
View the Free Analysis

Have feedback on this article? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at AEM Holdings (SGX:AWX) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled. What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)? For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on AEM Holdings is: Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities) 0.032 = S$17m ÷ (S$709m - S$178m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023). So, AEM Holdings has an ROCE of 3.2%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Semiconductor industry average of 8.1%. Check out our latest analysis for AEM Holdings SGX:AWX Return on Capital Employed March 1st 2024 In the above chart we have measured AEM Holdings' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. What We Can Learn From AEM Holdings' ROCE We're a bit apprehensive about AEM Holdings because despite more capital being deployed in the business, returns on that capital and sales have both fallen. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This suggests some credibility amongst professional investors. But we can't rely on that fact alone since institutions make bad investments sometimes, just like everyone does. When multiple institutions own a stock, there's always a risk that they are in a 'crowded trade'. When such a trade goes wrong, multiple parties may compete to sell stock fast. This risk is higher in a company without a history of growth. You can see AEM Holdings' historic earnings and revenue below, but keep in mind there's always more to the story.

SGX:AWX Earnings and Revenue Growth January 16th 2024

Hedge funds don't have many shares in AEM Holdings. Looking at our data, we can see that the largest shareholder is Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited with 13% of shares outstanding. The same can be achieved by studying analyst sentiments. There are plenty of analysts covering the stock, so it might be worth seeing what they are forecasting, too.

Insider Ownership Of AEM Holdings

The definition of company insiders can be subjective and does vary between jurisdictions. However, on some occasions too much power is concentrated within this group.

We can report that insiders do own shares in AEM Holdings Ltd.. This size of ownership, while considerable, may not be enough to change company policy if the decision is not in sync with other large shareholders.

Private Equity Ownership

With a stake of 13%, private equity firms could influence the AEM Holdings board. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

View our latest analysis for iFAST

SGX:AIY Price to Sales Ratio vs Industry January 6th 2024

How Has iFAST Performed Recently?

Recent revenue growth for iFAST has been in line with the industry. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.
Want the full picture on analyst estimates for the company? Then our free report on iFAST will help you uncover what's on the horizon.
Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For iFAST?

iFAST's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 3.6% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 43% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 50% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 23% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why iFAST's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From iFAST's P/S?

We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that iFAST maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Capital Markets industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.

A lot of potential risks can sit within a company's balance sheet. You can assess many of the main risks through our free balance sheet analysis for iFAST with six simple checks.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. (SGX:AIY) is a stock to avoid completely, seeing as almost half of all the Capital Markets companies in Singapore have P/S ratios under 5.8x and even P/S lower than 2x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified. View our latest analysis for iFAST SGX:AIY Price to Sales Ratio vs Industry January 6th 2024 How Has iFAST Performed Recently? So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly. Let's look at a few.

The Twitter debacle

Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter has been an unwelcome distraction for Tesla investors. The Tesla CEO's offer was announced on April 14, 2022, and Tesla shares have plunged 60% since. Those who were expecting a renewed focus on Tesla once the transaction was complete have been disappointed. Several high-profile Twitter controversies have followed. Investors may see Musk's focus on Twitter as bad for Tesla stock at a time when Tesla needs its CEO's focus more than ever.

Musk announced he will step down as Twitter CEO once a replacement is found. This is terrific news for Tesla and could provide a short-term bump in the stock price once the new CEO is found. However, the Twitter complication isn't the only problem for Tesla stock.

Competition is coming -- fast

Tesla has enjoyed its first-mover advantage in the EV industry for years. In 2021, the company accounted for 14% of all EV vehicle sales globally and more than 70% of the coveted US market. The chart below illustrates the tremendous dominance.

Tesla's U.S. market share has nowhere to go but down, which is the trend -- from nearly 80% in 2020, to 70% in 2021, to 65% as of Q3 2022. Other auto companies are investing heavily to electrify their fleets. For example, Ford Motor Company is spending $22 billion through 2025, and General Motors is spending $35 billion. GM believes it can sell a million EVs by then and seeks to make its entire fleet all-electric.

This doesn't mean Tesla can't compete; far from it. But the competition will be fierce, and the road ahead is getting significantly more difficult.

An economic triple-whammy

Three major economic obstacles will make 2023 difficult:

A likely recession

Rising interest rates

Cratering consumer confidence

Electric vehicles, especially high-performance Teslas, don't come cheap.
