The company retracted guidance for e-commerce growth, as it finally acknowledged that the macro-environment was having a toll on its business. The company continues to see weakness in its cash cow gaming division, which may be a troubling sign in an environment where many tech companies have shifted their focus from growth to profits. Still, the stock is quite cheap here and can take off if positive sentiment returns to the name.</p><h2>SE Stock Price</h2><p>SE peaked at around $373 per share, but has since crashed over 80%.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ce6297af911b04c8fa84e29673a1f332\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>I last covered the name in July, where I rated the stock a buy on account of the undervaluation. The stock has since dropped 25%, offering even more attractive valuations - though the risks remain ever-present.</p><h2>SE Stock Key Metrics</h2><p>SE reported 29% overall revenue growth in the latest quarter, as strength in e-commerce and financial services offset weakness in gaming.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d8ba4202650f1aba3cae8a36fa17d67\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"514\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>2022 Q2 Presentation</span></p><p>SE saw paying users in gaming decline 8.6% sequentially and 39% YOY.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6f302cd86eff24404d32ed282939ff56\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"502\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>2022 Q2 Presentation</span></p><p>That is concerning because historically, the digital entertainment unit provides the cash to fund losses from e-commerce and financial services. Due to the weakness in digital entertainment, SE has seen adjusted EBITDA swing sharply negative.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/02968dd8189b049cf7826f38ce54d41c\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"612\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>2022 Q2 Presentation</span></p><p>That led to the company posting a staggering $931 million net loss or $569.8 million non-GAAP net loss.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eeb4f90e17cbe18235a6924dbc3fa2a5\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"538\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>2022 Q2 Presentation</span></p><p>The company ended the quarter with $7.8 billion of cash, enough to fund a couple years of these losses.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/42bc50d8152f8913f2e2fd8190c10e29\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"590\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>2022 Q2 Presentation</span></p><p>These results weren’t great, but not necessarily enough to explain the huge fall after earnings. Instead, it was the guidance:</p><blockquote>In our efforts to adapt to increasing macro uncertainties, we are proactively shifting our strategies to further focus on efficiency and optimization for the long-term strength and profitability of the e-commerce business. Given this strategic shift, we will be suspending e-commerce GAAP revenue guidance for the full year 2022. We believe such efforts will further strengthen our ability to better capture the long-term growth opportunities in our markets, which we remain highly positive about.</blockquote><p>In the conference call, management stated that there was no change in guidance of breakeven on Asia operations after headquarter costs, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they backtracked on that guidance over the coming quarters.</p><h2>Is SE Stock A Buy, Sell, or Hold?</h2><p>In September, SE announced in an internal memo that it was exiting LATAM countries Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia. SE had entered Mexico, Chile, and Colombia just last year. The company then announced that the leadership team would be foregoing their salaries to help conserve cash.</p><p>While these efforts should help reduce the quarterly cash burn, they’ll likely dramatically reduce the forward growth profile. It is difficult to predict which will prove more important in determining forward valuations.</p><p>SE previously guided to $8.9 billion in e-commerce revenues. If we instead assume $7 billion in revenues, 10% long term net margins, a 1x price to earnings growth ratio (‘PEG ratio’) and 30% growth in 2023, then I value the e-commerce division at $21 billion. For the video game business, I again use $1 billion of adjusted EBITDA and a 5x multiple to arrive at a $5 billion valuation. For the digital financial services, I reduce my estimate to $1 billion in revenues. Assuming 30% long term margins, 1x PEG ratio and 40% growth in 2023, that segment might be worth $12 billion. In total, we arrive at a valuation of $37 billion, somewhat higher than the current $35 billion market cap. I note that the 1x PEG ratio may be too conservative as 1.5x to 2x may be more appropriate, but the company’s cash burn may warrant a greater risk premium.</p><p>This is precisely the moment to own a stock like SE: huge growth opportunity clouded by a murky near term outlook, with a valuation that can pay off big. But the risks are real. There is cash burn risk, though the company does have plenty of cash on its balance sheet. An underappreciated risk is that of slowing growth rates. It is possible (if not likely) that the company’s previous growth rates were being juiced by highly unprofitable growth in Latin America - which the company is now exiting. As a result, there is great uncertainty in forward growth rates, though my assumed 1x PEG ratio may provide some margin of safety. I rate SE a buy, and it is one of the tech stocks I purchased in the 2022 Tech Stock Crash List provided for subscribers of Best of Breed Growth Stocks. SE had entered Mexico, Chile, and Colombia just last year. The company then announced that the leadership team would be foregoing their salaries to help conserve cash.While these efforts should help reduce the quarterly cash burn, they’ll likely dramatically reduce the forward growth profile. It is difficult to predict which will prove more important in determining forward valuations.SE previously guided to $8.9 billion in e-commerce revenues. If we instead assume $7 billion in revenues, 10% long term net margins, a 1x price to earnings growth ratio (‘PEG ratio’) and 30% growth in 2023, then I value the e-commerce division at $21 billion. For the video game business, I again use $1 billion of adjusted EBITDA and a 5x multiple to arrive at a $5 billion valuation. For the digital financial services, I reduce my estimate to $1 billion in revenues. Assuming 30% long term margins, 1x PEG ratio and 40% growth in 2023, that segment might be worth $12 billion. In total, we arrive at a valuation of $37 billion, somewhat higher than the current $35 billion market cap. I note that the 1x PEG ratio may be too conservative as 1.5x to 2x may be more appropriate, but the company’s cash burn may warrant a greater risk premium.This is precisely the moment to own a stock like SE: huge growth opportunity clouded by a murky near term outlook, with a valuation that can pay off big. But the risks are real. There is cash burn risk, though the company does have plenty of cash on its balance sheet. An underappreciated risk is that of slowing growth rates. It is possible (if not likely) that the company’s previous growth rates were being juiced by highly unprofitable growth in Latin America - which the company is now exiting. As a result, there is great uncertainty in forward growth rates, though my assumed 1x PEG ratio may provide some margin of safety. I rate SE a buy, and it is one of the tech stocks I purchased in the 2022 Tech Stock Crash List provided for subscribers of Best of Breed Growth Stocks. Let&#39;s review the three reasons to buy Sea&#39;s stock -- along with three reasons to sell it -- to see where it might be headed.</p><h2>First reason to buy: Shopee&#39;s growth potential</h2><p>Sea generated 59% of its revenues from Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, in its latest quarter. Shopee&#39;s revenue surged 160% in 2020, driven by a spike in online purchases during the pandemic, and grew 136% in 2021. In 2022, it revenue rose 64% year over year in the first quarter and 51% in the second quarter. Its growth is gradually cooling off, but it&#39;s still growing a lot faster than most other major e-commerce companies.</p><p>Shopee scaled back its overseas expansion over the past year, but its core Southeast Asian market still has plenty of room to grow. IDC Financial Insights expects the region&#39;s number of e-commerce users to rise from 222 million in 2020 to 411 million in 2025. Bain &amp; Company believes the GMV (gross merchandise volume, or the value of all goods sold) across the Southeast Asian e-commerce market will nearly double from $120 billion in 2021 to $234 billion in 2025. Those rosy forecasts suggest Shopee can easily generate high double-digit sales growth for the foreseeable future.</p><h2>Second reason to buy: SeaMoney&#39;s growth potential</h2><p>Sea generated another 9% of its revenue from its digital financial services (DFS) segment, which houses its SeaMoney digital wallet and other fintech services, in its latest quarter. It started disclosing the segment&#39;s revenues separately in 2021, when its revenue skyrocketed 711%.</p><p>Its DFS revenue rose 360% year over year in the first quarter of 2022, then grew another 214% in the second quarter. SeaMoney ended the second quarter with 52.7 million quarterly active users across all its services, which represented 53% growth from the previous year. That growth makes it a promising play on the expansion of Southeast Asia&#39;s digital wallet market, which IDC believes will grow from 154 million users in 2020 to 404 million users by 2025.</p><h2>Third reason to buy: Its valuation</h2><p>Sea&#39;s total revenue rose 101% in 2020 and 128% in 2021, and analysts expect its top line to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 24% from 2021 to 2024 -- which implies its annual revenue will nearly double.</p><p>Yet Sea&#39;s stock still trades at less than two times this year&#39;s sales, which makes it more comparable to a struggling brick-and-mortar retailer like <b>GameStop</b> instead of a high-growth e-commerce company. Therefore, it could easily double or triple from these levels if it finally impresses the market again.</p><h2>First reason to sell: Garena&#39;s slowdown</h2><p>Sea generated 31% of its revenue from the digital entertainment division, which houses its gaming unit Garena, in its latest quarter. Garena generates most of its growth from its battle royale game <i>Free Fire</i>, which was launched back in 2017.</p><p>Garena&#39;s bookings soared 80% in 2020 as more people played <i>Free Fire </i>throughout the pandemic, then increased 44% in 2021. But its bookings declined sharply in the first half of 2022 as those pandemic-induced headwinds faded away. The game was also abruptly banned in India, one of its fastest-growing markets, earlier this year.</p><h2>Second reason to sell: Its ongoing losses</h2><p>Garena&#39;s slowdown is troubling because it&#39;s the only one of Sea&#39;s three main businesses units that generates a positive adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization). Shopee is still racking up losses as it tries to attract shoppers with discounts and shipping subsidies, and it&#39;s also operating SeaMoney at a loss to lock in more users.</p><p>The bulls initially believed Sea could offset those losses with Garena&#39;s profits, but that thesis is quickly collapsing as <i>Free Fire&#39;s</i> growth stalls out. That&#39;s why analysts expect Sea to remain unprofitable for the foreseeable future.</p><h2>Third reason to sell: Rising interest rates</h2><p>Sea&#39;s lack of profits will make it an unappealing investment as long as interest rates continue to rise. It was still sitting on $6.5 billion in cash and equivalents at the end of the second quarter, thanks to a big debt and stock sale last year, but it could struggle to raise more funds at favorable rates in this challenging market.</p><h2>Do its strengths outweigh its weaknesses?</h2><p>I own some shares of Sea, and I believe its low price-to-sales ratio could limit its downside potential. But I also don&#39;t think it will stage a meaningful recovery until it revives Garena and narrows its losses. Rising interest rates exacerbated the pain by broadly crushing higher-growth tech stocks.But even after that painful drawdown, Sea's stock still remains about 240% above its IPO price of $15 from five years ago. Let's review the three reasons to buy Sea's stock -- along with three reasons to sell it -- to see where it might be headed.First reason to buy: Shopee's growth potentialSea generated 59% of its revenues from Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, in its latest quarter. Shopee's revenue surged 160% in 2020, driven by a spike in online purchases during the pandemic, and grew 136% in 2021. In 2022, it revenue rose 64% year over year in the first quarter and 51% in the second quarter. Its growth is gradually cooling off, but it's still growing a lot faster than most other major e-commerce companies.Shopee scaled back its overseas expansion over the past year, but its core Southeast Asian market still has plenty of room to grow. IDC Financial Insights expects the region's number of e-commerce users to rise from 222 million in 2020 to 411 million in 2025. Bain & Company believes the GMV (gross merchandise volume, or the value of all goods sold) across the Southeast Asian e-commerce market will nearly double from $120 billion in 2021 to $234 billion in 2025. Those rosy forecasts suggest Shopee can easily generate high double-digit sales growth for the foreseeable future.Second reason to buy: SeaMoney's growth potentialSea generated another 9% of its revenue from its digital financial services (DFS) segment, which houses its SeaMoney digital wallet and other fintech services, in its latest quarter. It started disclosing the segment's revenues separately in 2021, when its revenue skyrocketed 711%.Its DFS revenue rose 360% year over year in the first quarter of 2022, then grew another 214% in the second quarter. SeaMoney ended the second quarter with 52.7 million quarterly active users across all its services, which represented 53% growth from the previous year. That growth makes it a promising play on the expansion of Southeast Asia's digital wallet market, which IDC believes will grow from 154 million users in 2020 to 404 million users by 2025.Third reason to buy: Its valuationSea's total revenue rose 101% in 2020 and 128% in 2021, and analysts expect its top line to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 24% from 2021 to 2024 -- which implies its annual revenue will nearly double.Yet Sea's stock still trades at less than two times this year's sales, which makes it more comparable to a struggling brick-and-mortar retailer like GameStop instead of a high-growth e-commerce company. Therefore, it could easily double or triple from these levels if it finally impresses the market again.First reason to sell: Garena's slowdownSea generated 31% of its revenue from the digital entertainment division, which houses its gaming unit Garena, in its latest quarter. Garena generates most of its growth from its battle royale game Free Fire, which was launched back in 2017.Garena's bookings soared 80% in 2020 as more people played Free Fire throughout the pandemic, then increased 44% in 2021. But its bookings declined sharply in the first half of 2022 as those pandemic-induced headwinds faded away. The game was also abruptly banned in India, one of its fastest-growing markets, earlier this year.Second reason to sell: Its ongoing lossesGarena's slowdown is troubling because it's the only one of Sea's three main businesses units that generates a positive adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization). Shopee is still racking up losses as it tries to attract shoppers with discounts and shipping subsidies, and it's also operating SeaMoney at a loss to lock in more users.The bulls initially believed Sea could offset those losses with Garena's profits, but that thesis is quickly collapsing as Free Fire's growth stalls out. That's why analysts expect Sea to remain unprofitable for the foreseeable future.Third reason to sell: Rising interest ratesSea's lack of profits will make it an unappealing investment as long as interest rates continue to rise. It was still sitting on $6.5 billion in cash and equivalents at the end of the second quarter, thanks to a big debt and stock sale last year, but it could struggle to raise more funds at favorable rates in this challenging market.Do its strengths outweigh its weaknesses?I own some shares of Sea, and I believe its low price-to-sales ratio could limit its downside potential. The memory specialist's revenue jumped 36% year over year in the fiscal third quarter (ended June 3, 2021), while earnings more than doubled to $1.88 per share from $0.82 per share in the prior-year period.</p>\n<p>Micron's fourth-quarter guidance suggests that it isn't going to run out of steam anytime soon. The company's $8.2 billion revenue guidance for this quarter would translate into a 36% year-over-year gain, while the $2.30 per share adjusted earnings forecast means that its bottom line is on track to more than double from the prior-year period's $1.08 per&nbsp;share.</p>\n<p>However, the market hasn't appreciated this terrific growth, as the muted stock price performance shows. There is great demand for memory chips in all these markets, which is leading to tight supplies and higher prices.</p>\n<p>Memory market research firm TrendForce estimates that the price of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) could increase between 3% and 8% in the third quarter of the calendar year over Q2. The fundamentals of the business are intact and growth is strong. It’s like Amazon&nbsp;(<b>AMZN</b>) -Get Report.Eventually, it will perform better&nbsp;- it’s a question of “when” and not “if.”</p>\n<p>Shares continue to hold the $210 to $212 area and have recently cleared downtrend resistance (blue line). That said, there’s plenty of overhead hurdles.</p>\n<p>Specifically, Alibaba stock is struggling with the 21-week moving average, as well as the 21-month and 10-month moving averages.</p>\n<p>Let’s be clear: There are not a lot of bullish technical components here. If Alibaba stock could hold the 10-week moving average on this week’s dip, I’d feel better about it.</p>\n<p>However, as long as it can hold up over the $210 level and really, the 200-week moving average, I feel okay about Alibaba going into the next six months.</p>\n<p>A push over $235 - thus putting it over all of the moving average hurdles mentioned above - could open up a run to $250, then $263.
