TV","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2151154518","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"(Bloomberg) -- Netflix Inc., marking its first big move beyond TV shows and films, is planning an ex","content":"
(Bloomberg) -- Netflix Inc., marking its first big move beyond TV shows and films, is planning an expansion into video games and has hired a former Electronic Arts Inc. and Facebook Inc. executive to lead the effort.
\n
Mike Verdu will join Netflix as vice president of game development, reporting to Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters, the company said on Wednesday. Verdu was previously Facebook’s vice president in charge of working with developers to bring games and other content to Oculus virtual-reality headsets.
\n
The idea is to offer video games on Netflix’s streaming platform within the next year, according to a person familiar with the situation. The games will appear alongside current fare as a new programming genre -- similar to what Netflix did with documentaries or stand-up specials. The company doesn’t currently plan to charge extra for the content, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private.
\n
Netflix shares gained as much as 3.3% to $566 in late trading after Bloomberg reported the news. The stock had been up 1.3% this year through Wednesday’s close.
\n
Netflix has been seeking ways to keep growing, especially in more saturated markets such as the U.S. That’s included building out its kids’ programming, opening an online shop to sell merchandise, and tapping Steven Spielberg to bring more prestigious movies to its lineup. The company remains well ahead of streaming rivals such as Disney+ or HBO Max, but it added fewer subscribers than expected in its most recently reported quarter.
\n
Pushing into games would be one of Netflix’s boldest moves yet. In Verdu, the company has an executive who worked on popular mobile games at Electronic Arts, including titles in the Sims, Plants vs. Zombies and Star Wars franchises. He also served as chief creative officer for Zynga Inc. between 2009 and 2012.
\n
Netflix will be building out its gaming team in the coming months, according to the person familiar with the matter. The company has already started advertising for game-development related positions on its website.
\n
Video games give Netflix another way to lure new customers and also offer something none of its direct competitors currently provides. Walt Disney Co., AT&T Inc.’s WarnerMedia and Amazon.com Inc. all have access to live sports, but they don’t have gaming within their main video services.
\n
Ultimately, the move may make it easier for Netflix to justify price increases in coming years. Games also serve the purpose of helping market existing shows.
\n
Many of the largest tech companies do sell gaming options in addition to their video services. Apple Inc. has a platform called Arcade for games -- as well as a TV+ service for original video projects. But it charges extra for the gaming.
\n
What Bloomberg Intelligence says:“This is a natural extension of its Netflix’s content strategy, allowing it to mine intellectual property from popular shows like ‘Stranger Things.’ Though it may not generate much additional revenue, it will help deepen engagement and increase the service’s appeal and pricing power. Don’t expect this to be a turning point, but it shows that the company will explore new formats to increase time spent on the platform.”-- Geetha Ranganathan, BI media analyst
\n
The news jolted shares of GameStop Corp., the video-game retailer that’s been attempting a comeback. It fell as much as 10% in extended trading Wednesday.
\n
Evidence of Netflix’s plans to add games has already begun to appear in files hidden deep within the company’s app, according to research conducted by iOS developer Steve Moser that was shared with Bloomberg.
\n
Netflix has previously licensed the rights to games based on its shows -- including “Stranger Things” -- but this new initiative is much larger in scope. The Los Gatos, California-based company has yet to settle on a game-development strategy, said the person. In typical Netflix fashion, the company may start with just a few games and build from there.
\n
Interactive Shows
\n
Netflix also has made earlier forays into interactive programming, such as choose-your-own-adventure-style shows. It created versions of programs like “Carmen Sandiego” and “Black Mirror” in that format, which stops short of being a true video game.
\n
Netflix co-Chief Executive Officers Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos have shared their interest in pushing into gaming in recent calls with analysts. They’ve also identified the battle-royale shooter game Fortnite as a competitor for its customers’ time.
\n
Still, Hollywood studios have a checkered history in the video-game business. Some companies have had a lot of success licensing their movies or TV shows for games, and Warner Bros. has created a handful of hit titles in-house over the years.
\n
But Disney, the world’s largest entertainment company, shut down most of its in-house gaming operations after years of unsuccessful efforts. It has since focused on licensing Marvel and Stars Wars properties for games.
","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Netflix Plans to Offer Video Games in Push Beyond Films, TV
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNetflix Plans to Offer Video Games in Push Beyond Films, TV\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-15 23:01 GMT+8 Bloomberg\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
(Bloomberg) -- Netflix Inc., marking its first big move beyond TV shows and films, is planning an expansion into video games and has hired a former Electronic Arts Inc. and Facebook Inc. executive to ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"T":"美国电话电报","GME":"游戏驿站","NFLX":"奈飞","EA":"艺电","DIS":"迪士尼","AMZN":"亚马逊","AAPL":"苹果","QNETCN":"纳斯达克中美互联网老虎指数","ZNGA":"Zynga"},"source_url":"https://finance.yahoo.com/news/netflix-plans-offer-video-games-232147216.html","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5f26f4a48f9cb3e29be4d71d3ba8c038","article_id":"2151154518","content_text":"(Bloomberg) -- Netflix Inc., marking its first big move beyond TV shows and films, is planning an expansion into video games and has hired a former Electronic Arts Inc. and Facebook Inc. executive to lead the effort.\nMike Verdu will join Netflix as vice president of game development, reporting to Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters, the company said on Wednesday. Walt Disney Co., AT&T Inc.’s WarnerMedia and Amazon.com Inc. all have access to live sports, but they don’t have gaming within their main video services.\nUltimately, the move may make it easier for Netflix to justify price increases in coming years. Games also serve the purpose of helping market existing shows.\nMany of the largest tech companies do sell gaming options in addition to their video services. Apple Inc. has a platform called Arcade for games -- as well as a TV+ service for original video projects. But it charges extra for the gaming.\nWhat Bloomberg Intelligence says:“This is a natural extension of its Netflix’s content strategy, allowing it to mine intellectual property from popular shows like ‘Stranger Things.’ Though it may not generate much additional revenue, it will help deepen engagement and increase the service’s appeal and pricing power. Don’t expect this to be a turning point, but it shows that the company will explore new formats to increase time spent on the platform.”-- Geetha Ranganathan, BI media analyst\nThe news jolted shares of GameStop Corp., the video-game retailer that’s been attempting a comeback. It fell as much as 10% in extended trading Wednesday.\nEvidence of Netflix’s plans to add games has already begun to appear in files hidden deep within the company’s app, according to research conducted by iOS developer Steve Moser that was shared with Bloomberg.\nNetflix has previously licensed the rights to games based on its shows -- including “Stranger Things” -- but this new initiative is much larger in scope. The Los Gatos, California-based company has yet to settle on a game-development strategy, said the person. In typical Netflix fashion, the company may start with just a few games and build from there.\nInteractive Shows\nNetflix also has made earlier forays into interactive programming, such as choose-your-own-adventure-style shows. It created versions of programs like “Carmen Sandiego” and “Black Mirror” in that format, which stops short of being a true video game.\nNetflix co-Chief Executive Officers Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos have shared their interest in pushing into gaming in recent calls with analysts. They’ve also identified the battle-royale shooter game Fortnite as a competitor for its customers’ time.\nStill, Hollywood studios have a checkered history in the video-game business. Some companies have had a lot of success licensing their movies or TV shows for games, and Warner Bros. has created a handful of hit titles in-house over the years.\nBut Disney, the world’s largest entertainment company, shut down most of its in-house gaming operations after years of unsuccessful efforts. It has since focused on licensing Marvel and Stars Wars properties for games.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":138,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":148871876,"gmtCreate":1625969215895,"gmtModify":1703751353143,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Looking forward to M2 chip being ready and available on more devices!!","listText":"Looking forward to M2 chip being ready and available on more devices!!","text":"Looking forward to M2 chip being ready and available on more devices!!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/148871876","repostId":"1176789091","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":277,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":141499924,"gmtCreate":1625883699468,"gmtModify":1703750393826,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"All the promising cloud security vendors there!","listText":"All the promising cloud security vendors there!","text":"All the promising cloud security vendors there!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/141499924","repostId":"2150370120","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2150370120","pubTimestamp":1625879410,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2150370120?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-10 09:10","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Top 10 Cloud Stocks to Buy on the Next Dip","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2150370120","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"How can you capitalize on secular growth trends like digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, analytics, video streaming, work from anywhere, the gig economy, and more? Crowdstrike's Falcon platform stops breaches through both prevention and response, a process known as endpoint detection and response (EDR). It uses agent-based sensors that can be installed on Mac, Linux, and Windows. Crowdstrike relies on a cloud-hosted SaaS platform that manages data and prevents, detects, and responds to threats. Both malware and non-malware attacks are covered via Crowdstrike's cloud-delivered technologies in a lightweight solution. \nCyberattacks continue to be a major threat, and the total addressable market for cybersecurity is enormous. Crowdstrike has been a monster since its IPO in 2019, growing into a $60 billion market cap company. But I think Crowdstrike is just getting started, and it stands tall as my top high-conviction cloud/SaaS stock for the next decade.\nIf you want deeper-dive analysis on these stocks, please watch the video below, where I cover these and many others in the cloud space. Maybe one day, in the not-too-distant future, shares could even start to look more appealing to value investors.
\n
Which is the best bet?
\n
If Amazon and Apple are valued at roughly the same 2025 P/E, one fair question to ask is: which stock might perform best in the next five years? I can use the earnings multiple as a guide to think through this question.
\n
From the P/E formula, one can derive the following: future stock price is determined by the company’s earnings delivered (the denominator “E”) and how much investors are willing to pay for those earnings (the valuation multiple). Therefore, in the Amazon vs. Apple race to 2025, whichever does best at delivering EPS above consensus and/or commanding a richer earnings multiple wins.
\n
Clearly, this is open for debate since the future in uncertain. But I believe that Amazon stock has a better chance of producing higher gains than Apple through 2025.
\n
First, I find it highly unlikely that AMZN’s earnings multiple will converge from the 60s of today to the low 20s in 2025. This would only be feasible if the company’s growth opportunities dried out quickly, which I am not counting on. On the other hand, Apple’s P/E is more likely to stay around 20 to 25 times, given the more mature profile of the company relative to Amazon.
\n
This is not to say that I expect Amazon’s P/E to expand from 64 times. The opposite is more likely to happen, as the company ages. But if the stock is valued at, say, 40 times EPS in 2025, Amazon would not even need to deliver results beyond expectations to see its stock price double in five years.
\n
Regarding consensus, I also think that Amazon can beat expectations by a wider margin than Apple could. The e-commerce giant has been more aggressive at investing back in the business. The green- and brown-field revenue growth opportunities in e-commerce and cloud seem better.
\n
In addition, Amazon’s margins could expand substantially (see five-year trend below), if or once the company’s online retail business gets closer to maturity. Apple could also improve its margin profile but probably much less so, given how profitable the company already is.
\n
Figure 2: AMZN gross margin vs. operating margin.
\n
Stock Rover
\n
Twitter speaks
\n
Fun fact: Amazon and Apple stock trade at roughly the same 2025 P/E (i.e. 2025 earnings in the denominator) of around 21 times, even though AMZN seems much more expensive at today’s valuations. As CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B), Buffett has led his company to an average annual return of 20% since taking the helm in 1965. Through 2020, this worked out to an aggregate return of more than 2,800,000%, and it's created over $500 billion in value for Berkshire Hathaway's shareholders.
\n
Like all investors, Buffett isn't infallible. He's going to make mistakes from time to time. But he and his investing team have a knack for locating companies with plain-as-day sustainable competitive advantages. As the summer temperatures heat up, the following three Warren Buffett stocks stand out as screaming buys.
\n
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.
\n
Amazon
\n
Was there ever any doubt that Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) wouldn't be a screaming buy? Even though it's a stock that was added by Buffett's investing lieutenants (Todd Combs and Ted Weschler) and not the Oracle of Omaha himself, it's nevertheless one of the most attractive holdings in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio.
\n
As a lot of folks are probably aware, Amazon is the king of the hill when it comes online commerce. This year, the company's marketplace is expected to control roughly $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the United States, according to an April report from eMarketer. The next closest competitor is Walmart, which'll handle about 7% of all U.S. online retail.
\n
Amazon has been able to pivot its incredible online retail success into signing up more than 200 million people worldwide to a Prime membership. While Prime members enjoy free two-day shipping and access to streaming content, the lure for Amazon is that Prime fees generate tens of billions in added revenue that it can use to undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price and buoy its margins.
\n
What you might not realize about Amazon is that it's overwhelmingly dominant in a second industry, as well. Amazon Web Services (AWS) brought in 32% of global cloud infrastructure spending in the first quarter, per Canalys. Cloud infrastructure is still, arguably, in the early innings of its expansion, and it's a considerably higher margin segment for Amazon than retail or advertising. Thus, AWS is going to send Amazon's operating cash flow to the moon as it grows into a larger percentage of total sales.
\n
For the past 11 years, Wall Street and investors have consistently valued Amazon at a multiple of 23 to 37 times its cash flow. If this range remains intact, a near-tripling in the stock is possible by mid-decade.
\n
\n
Bristol Myers Squibb
\n
If value investing suits you better, pharmaceutical stock Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) has the makings of a screaming summer buy.
\n
The great thing about healthcare stocks is they're highly defensive. Since we don't get to choose when we get sick or what ailments we develop, there's a consistent demand for healthcare services, drugs, and devices, no matter how well or poorly the U.S. and global economy are performing.
\n
What makes Bristol Myers Squibb such a special company is its organic growth potential and astute dealmaking. To tackle the former, Bristol Myers and Pfizer co-developed the world's leading oral anticoagulant, Eliquis, which looks to be on pace for more than $10 billion in sales this year for Bristol. There's also cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which is being examined in dozens of ongoing clinical trials. Opdivo is already bringing in about $7 billion annually, and could push higher with continued label expansion opportunities. All told, eight brand-name therapies are on track for at least $1.2 billion in annual sales this year, based on extrapolated Q1 sales totals.
\n
On the dealmaking front, Bristol Myers Squibb hit a home run when it acquired cancer and immunology drugmaker Celgene in 2019. Celgene's superstar is multiple myeloma drug Revlimid, which brought in $12.1 billion in sales last year and has been growing by a double-digit percentage annually for more than a decade. Longer duration of use, label expansions, improved cancer screening diagnostics, and strong pricing power have all fueled Revlimid's growth. Best of all, it's protected from a large wave of generic competition until the end of January 2026. This means Bristol Myers will be basking in significant cash flow for another 4.5 years.
\n
In a world where valuation premiums are soaring, it seems unjust that a company so profitable should be valued at only 8.5 times Wall Street's consensus earnings for 2022.
\n
\n
General Motors
\n
Lastly, if you want a screaming summer buy that's near and dear to Warren Buffett's investment philosophy, consider auto stock General Motors (NYSE:GM).
\n
Historically, auto stocks are slow-growing companies that sports high levels of debt and are valued at price-to-earnings multiples that are well below the average S&P 500 company. But General Motors and its peers are the verge of taking advantage of an epic vehicle replacement cycle as consumers and businesses make the shift to electric vehicles (EV).
\n
Initially, General Motors was going to devote $20 billion to EV investment by mid-decade. However, in November, the company upped its expected outlay to $27 billion by 2025, with the ultimate goal of bringing 30 new EVs to market globally. Some of this capital will be used to bring EVs to market earlier than initially planned, as well as to develop GM's battery technology. With IHS Markit forecasting that 10% of all U.S. vehicle sales will be electric by 2025 (up from 1.8% in 2020), a hefty investment in this changing landscape makes sense for GM.
\n
Equally important are the company's ambitions overseas -- especially in China, the largest auto market in the world. As CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B), Buffett has led his company to an average annual return of 20% since taking the helm in 1965. Through 2020, this worked out to an aggregate return of more than 2,800,000%, and it's created over $500 billion in value for Berkshire Hathaway's shareholders.\nLike all investors, Buffett isn't infallible. He's going to make mistakes from time to time. But he and his investing team have a knack for locating companies with plain-as-day sustainable competitive advantages. As the summer temperatures heat up, the following three Warren Buffett stocks stand out as screaming buys.\nBerkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.\nAmazon\nWas there ever any doubt that Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) wouldn't be a screaming buy? Even though it's a stock that was added by Buffett's investing lieutenants (Todd Combs and Ted Weschler) and not the Oracle of Omaha himself, it's nevertheless one of the most attractive holdings in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio.\nAs a lot of folks are probably aware, Amazon is the king of the hill when it comes online commerce. This year, the company's marketplace is expected to control roughly $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the United States, according to an April report from eMarketer. The next closest competitor is Walmart, which'll handle about 7% of all U.S. online retail.\nAmazon has been able to pivot its incredible online retail success into signing up more than 200 million people worldwide to a Prime membership. While Prime members enjoy free two-day shipping and access to streaming content, the lure for Amazon is that Prime fees generate tens of billions in added revenue that it can use to undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price and buoy its margins.\nWhat you might not realize about Amazon is that it's overwhelmingly dominant in a second industry, as well. Amazon Web Services (AWS) brought in 32% of global cloud infrastructure spending in the first quarter, per Canalys. Cloud infrastructure is still, arguably, in the early innings of its expansion, and it's a considerably higher margin segment for Amazon than retail or advertising. Thus, AWS is going to send Amazon's operating cash flow to the moon as it grows into a larger percentage of total sales.\nFor the past 11 years, Wall Street and investors have consistently valued Amazon at a multiple of 23 to 37 times its cash flow. If this range remains intact, a near-tripling in the stock is possible by mid-decade.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nBristol Myers Squibb\nIf value investing suits you better, pharmaceutical stock Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) has the makings of a screaming summer buy.\nThe great thing about healthcare stocks is they're highly defensive. Since we don't get to choose when we get sick or what ailments we develop, there's a consistent demand for healthcare services, drugs, and devices, no matter how well or poorly the U.S. and global economy are performing.\nWhat makes Bristol Myers Squibb such a special company is its organic growth potential and astute dealmaking. All told, eight brand-name therapies are on track for at least $1.2 billion in annual sales this year, based on extrapolated Q1 sales totals.\nOn the dealmaking front, Bristol Myers Squibb hit a home run when it acquired cancer and immunology drugmaker Celgene in 2019. This means Bristol Myers will be basking in significant cash flow for another 4.5 years.\nIn a world where valuation premiums are soaring, it seems unjust that a company so profitable should be valued at only 8.5 times Wall Street's consensus earnings for 2022.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGeneral Motors\nLastly, if you want a screaming summer buy that's near and dear to Warren Buffett's investment philosophy, consider auto stock General Motors (NYSE:GM).\nHistorically, auto stocks are slow-growing companies that sports high levels of debt and are valued at price-to-earnings multiples that are well below the average S&P 500 company. But General Motors and its peers are the verge of taking advantage of an epic vehicle replacement cycle as consumers and businesses make the shift to electric vehicles (EV).\nInitially, General Motors was going to devote $20 billion to EV investment by mid-decade. However, in November, the company upped its expected outlay to $27 billion by 2025, with the ultimate goal of bringing 30 new EVs to market globally. Some of this capital will be used to bring EVs to market earlier than initially planned, as well as to develop GM's battery technology. With IHS Markit forecasting that 10% of all U.S. vehicle sales will be electric by 2025 (up from 1.8% in 2020), a hefty investment in this changing landscape makes sense for GM.\nEqually important are the company's ambitions overseas -- especially in China, the largest auto market in the world. By 2035, the Society of Automotive Engineers of China anticipates that half of all vehicle sales will be some form of alternative energy. Through the first-half of 2021, GM delivered more than 1.5 million vehicles in China. With an established presence, existing infrastructure, and well-known branding, GM has a real shot at becoming an EV leader in China.\nA forward-year price-to-earnings ratio of 8 simply doesn't convey the multi-decade growth opportunity that's on GM's doorstep.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":316,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":171127237,"gmtCreate":1626720951429,"gmtModify":1703763948497,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Short term burst but who knows how long it will last, might rocket all the way and stay there..","listText":"Short term burst but who knows how long it will last, might rocket all the way and stay there..","text":"Short term burst but who knows how long it will last, might rocket all the way and stay there..","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/171127237","repostId":"1158140412","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1158140412","pubTimestamp":1626706707,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1158140412?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-19 22:58","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nvidia Stock’s Surge Makes Chip Maker 10th-Biggest U.S. Listed Company","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1158140412","media":"The Wall Street Journal","summary":"Company’s shares are up nearly 80% over the past year.\n\nThe post-pandemic boom in the semiconductor ","content":"
\n Company’s shares are up nearly 80% over the past year.\n
\n
The post-pandemic boom in the semiconductor business has powered NVIDIA Corp into the top 10 U.S. public companies, joining the likes of Apple Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co.
\n
Shares of the Santa Clara, Calif., firm have risen nearly 80% over the past year, giving it a market value of around $453 billion. Here is why.
\n
The Apple Maven continues its preview of the Cupertino company’s fiscal third quarter earnings day. So far, we have discussed (1)Wall Street’s expectationsfor revenues and earnings and (2) the expected performance of the iPhone in the quarter.
\n
Today, we address what could be Apple’s most successful product category in the third fiscal period of 2021: the iPad.
\n
Figure 1: The latest iPad Pro model.
\n
The 2020 pandemic has made winners of tech companies that managed to capitalize on shifting consumer behavior – also known as the “stay at home” trends. This partially explains why iPad revenues have shot through the roof in the past several quarters: growth of at least 30% since fiscal Q2 last year.
\n
For starters,it has become increasingly obviousthat consumers are not returning to old spending habits, even as the COVID-19 crisis gets closer to an end. Therefore, I see no reason to doubt that iPad sales will impress once again this time, although the growth rate will be partially eclipsed by tough 2020 comps.
\n
But the story does not end with the effects of the pandemic. The chart below shows that, since around 2017, Apple has been able to reignite demand for its tablets. Here is why.\nThe Apple Maven continues its preview of the Cupertino company’s fiscal third quarter earnings day. So far, we have discussed (1)Wall Street’s expectationsfor revenues and earnings and (2) the expected performance of the iPhone in the quarter.\nToday, we address what could be Apple’s most successful product category in the third fiscal period of 2021: the iPad.\nFigure 1: The latest iPad Pro model.\nThe 2020 pandemic has made winners of tech companies that managed to capitalize on shifting consumer behavior – also known as the “stay at home” trends. This partially explains why iPad revenues have shot through the roof in the past several quarters: growth of at least 30% since fiscal Q2 last year.\nFor starters,it has become increasingly obviousthat consumers are not returning to old spending habits, even as the COVID-19 crisis gets closer to an end. Therefore, I see no reason to doubt that iPad sales will impress once again this time, although the growth rate will be partially eclipsed by tough 2020 comps.\nBut the story does not end with the effects of the pandemic. The chart below shows that, since around 2017, Apple has been able to reignite demand for its tablets. Even in 2019, before the pandemic turned the world upside down, iPad sales had already been growing at a respectable 13% pace.\nFigure 2: iPad revenue in millions U.S dollars.\nThe rebirth of the tablet business, I will be frank, caught me by surprise. The phenomenon can be probably attributed to technological advancements allowing products like the iPad to better replace personal computers (more storage, better graphics, fast processor speed) and even smartphones (wider range of screen sizes, better cameras, introduction of 5G capability).\nCase in point, Research and Marketsbelievesthat tablet revenues across the industry will continue to grow at a CAGR of over 10% through 2023. The former, trading at 26 times current earnings, is a blend of value and growth, what some might call a GARP play. The latter, trading at 64 times EPS, is the highest growth of FAAMG names.
\n
But the Amazon Maven has unearthed an interesting finding. Both AAPL and AMZN are worth almost the same, in P/E terms, if one were to look forward to 2025. At comparable valuations, which is a better buy-and-hold through the mid-2020s?
\n
AAPL and AMZN: same valuation?
\n
The P/E multiple is a popular valuation metric that adds context to a stock’s market price. The numerator tends to be prior-year (trailing), current-year or next-year (forward) earnings per share.
\n
Amazon commands a higher multiple, among other reasons, because of the company’s more aggressive growth profile. Wall Street expects the e-commerce giant to increase EPS by a factor of four in the next five years. Apple, on the other hand, is project to “only” double earnings in the same period.
\n
By 2025, this is what analysts expect of each company’s bottom line, and what the stock’s P/E would be if share prices remained unchanged:
\n
\n
Amazon: 2025 EPS of $172.30, for a P/E of20.4times
\n
Apple: fiscal 2025 EPS of $6.30, for a P/E of21.2times
\n
\n
Given enough time and assuming that current earnings projections are close enough to accurate, Amazon tends to become a less aggressively valued stock by the year.
\n
Fun fact: Amazon and Apple stock trade at roughly the same 2025 P/E (i.e. 2025 earnings in the denominator) of around 21 times, even though AMZN seems much more expensive at today’s valuations. The acquisition shows how Uber is investing more outside its core ride-hailing business, which has so far failed to prove profitable.\nShares of Uber were up about 0.66% before markets opened on Monday.\nThe deal comes nearly two years after Uber bought amajority stakein Cornershop for an undisclosed sum. Cornershop currently operates in the U.S., Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Canada.\n“Uber already owns ~50% of Cornershop and we’ve seen how working together can deliver great results, like our joint 2020 launch of Brazil, where in no time we became a leading player. But to truly unlock the full potential of this partnership, we need to operate as one company,” Oskar Hjertonsson, founder and CEO of Cornershop, said in a tweet.\nThe deal is expected to close in July.\nUber has focused its acquisition efforts on its Eats segment during the coronavirus pandemic. Uber acquired Postmates last July after it failed to buy food delivery service GrubHub. It also acquiredalcohol-delivery service Drizlyin February.\nUber has offloaded some of its more cost-eating transportation segments. The company last year transferred its electric bike and scooter business, Jump, to Lime. Uber also sold its self-driving unit, Advanced Technologies Group, to its start-up competitor Aurora Innovation. It also offloaded its flying taxi business, Uber Elevate.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":221,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9041448788,"gmtCreate":1656091983045,"gmtModify":1676535766445,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$CapitaLandInves(9CI.SI)$up up and away!!","listText":"$CapitaLandInves(9CI.SI)$up up and away!!","text":"$CapitaLandInves(9CI.SI)$up up and away!!","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8bfa3c7db0c934b84f9d45b871a727ef","width":"840","height":"1493"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9041448788","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":259,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":147577691,"gmtCreate":1626369402513,"gmtModify":1703758898287,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Looking forward to more offerings from Netflix!!","listText":"Looking forward to more offerings from Netflix!!","text":"Looking forward to more offerings from Netflix!!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/147577691","repostId":"2151154518","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":138,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9999959094,"gmtCreate":1660452739820,"gmtModify":1676533474177,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>up and up!!","listText":"$SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>up and up!!","text":"$SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$up and up!!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9999959094","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":175,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9990368211,"gmtCreate":1660290492136,"gmtModify":1676533445414,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>up and coming!!","listText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>up and coming!!","text":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$up and coming!!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9990368211","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":209,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":126619559,"gmtCreate":1624558269471,"gmtModify":1703840376408,"author":{"id":"3582503032011669","authorId":"3582503032011669","name":"JWJT","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8979a5013ed576222fe8bcbc58a0a052","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582503032011669","authorIdStr":"3582503032011669"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Looking at SIA reminds me of going for a holiday!","listText":"Looking at SIA reminds me of going for a holiday!","text":"Looking at SIA reminds me of going for a holiday!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/126619559","repostId":"2093347543","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":210,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
