including clearing the way for the central bank to reduce its monthly bond purchases soon.
\n
The S&P 500 registered its biggest daily percentage gain since July 23.
\n
While trading was choppy following the Fed's latest policy statement and comments by Fed Chair Jerome Powell, stocks finished close to where they were before the central bank news.
\n
In its statement, the central bank also suggested interest rate increases may follow more quickly than expected and said overall indicators in the economy \"have continued to strengthen.\"
\n
Bank shares rose following the Fed news, with the S&P banks index ending up 2.1% on the day, and S&P 500 financials up 1.6% and among the biggest gainers among sectors.
\n
Some strategists viewed the Fed's comments as mixed.
\n
\"So they said we're going to probably start to taper, but they haven't said when and haven't said how much, so we're kind of back where we were a day ago,\" said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Investment Management in Chicago.
\n
\"Those remain open questions,\" he said. \"Also, financial conditions remain very easy, and that's part of the reason why markets aren't going crazy at this point.\"
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 338.48 points, or 1%, to 34,258.32, the S&P 500 gained 41.45 points, or 0.95%, to 4,395.64 and the Nasdaq Composite added 150.45 points, or 1.02%, to 14,896.85.
\n
Apple and other big technology-related names gave the S&P 500 its biggest boost.
\n
On the downside, FedEx Corp tumbled 9.1% after posting a lower quarterly profit and as the delivery firm cut its full-year earnings forecast.
\n
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 3.88-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.38-to-1 ratio favored advancers.
\n
The S&P 500 posted nine new 52-week highs and eight new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 52 new highs and 66 new lows.
\n
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 9.91 billion shares, compared with the 9.99 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta YORK, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The three major U.S. stock indexes rose 1% on Wednesday as investors mostly took in stride the latest signals from the Federal Reserve, including clearing the way for the central bank to reduce its monthly bond purchases soon.\nThe S&P 500 registered its biggest daily percentage gain since July 23.\nWhile trading was choppy following the Fed's latest policy statement and comments by Fed Chair Jerome Powell, stocks finished close to where they were before the central bank news.\nIn its statement, the central bank also suggested interest rate increases may follow more quickly than expected and said overall indicators in the economy \"have continued to strengthen.\"\nBank shares rose following the Fed news, with the S&P banks index ending up 2.1% on the day, and S&P 500 financials up 1.6% and among the biggest gainers among sectors.\nSome strategists viewed the Fed's comments as mixed.\n\"So they said we're going to probably start to taper, but they haven't said when and haven't said how much, so we're kind of back where we were a day ago,\" said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Investment Management in Chicago.\n\"Those remain open questions,\" he said. \"Also, financial conditions remain very easy, and that's part of the reason why markets aren't going crazy at this point.\"\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 338.48 points, or 1%, to 34,258.32, the S&P 500 gained 41.45 points, or 0.95%, to 4,395.64 and the Nasdaq Composite added 150.45 points, or 1.02%, to 14,896.85.\nApple and other big technology-related names gave the S&P 500 its biggest boost.\nOn the downside, FedEx Corp tumbled 9.1% after posting a lower quarterly profit and as the delivery firm cut its full-year earnings forecast.\nAdvancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 3.88-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.38-to-1 ratio favored advancers.\nThe S&P 500 posted nine new 52-week highs and eight new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 52 new highs and 66 new lows.\nVolume on U.S. exchanges was 9.91 billion shares, compared with the 9.99 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":109,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":863935061,"gmtCreate":1632352554453,"gmtModify":1676530758146,"author":{"id":"3582588150029789","authorId":"3582588150029789","name":"Ninjachips","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84d7e26328c924be8d6b42aa48e5ed9e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Pressure on some of the globe’s largest technology companies sent the Nasdaq Composite down 1.9% to 13,633.50 for its worst day since March.Apple, the largest publicly traded company in the U.S., fell 3.5%. Google-parent Alphabet lost 1.6%, Facebook shed 1.3% and electric car maker Tesla dropped 1.7%. Investors did not spare the market’s chipmakers, with Nvidia and Intel losing 3.3% and 0.6%, respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day in the green thanks to strong performance in Dow Inc and Caterpillar. The 30-stock benchmark closed 19.8 points, or 0.1%, higher to 34,133.03 after dropping more than 300 points at one point Tuesday.Reasons for the downward pressure varied, but strategists cited a mix of concerns about rising inflation, fears the Federal Reserve may have to taper monetary stimulus earlier than telegraphed, and the potential for tax increases in the months ahead.U.S. equities hit their lows of the day following Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’scomments that interest ratesmay have to rise somewhat to keep economy from overheating.Evercore ISI strategist Dennis DeBusschere wrote that while Tuesday’s modest move in rates may not be a loud siren that investors are worried about the Fed, he nonetheless believes taper fears are playing a role.“Best we can tell supply concerns are a major issue for investors and inflation / inflation expectations are becoming a headwind,” he wrote in an email. “Although Fed futures are pricing in a much faster pace of rate hikes vs what the Fed wants...that is not the story today. The story is inflation and stronger growth numbers leading to even more inflation given supply constraints and what that means for equities.”DeBusschere’s supply-side concerns join those of a growing number of executives and investors who say rising input prices are starting to erode profit margins.Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, said during his company’s annual meeting over the weekend that he is seeing “very substantial inflation” and his companies are raising prices.Other companies, such as Clorox, have said in recent earnings reports that the prices they pay for the materials used to make their products are rising and could ultimately be passed on to customers. Commodity prices, from lumber to corn to palladium, have surged in recent months.Others have said that even blowout earnings results have been unable to quell marketplace jitters. Even accounting for Tuesday’s losses, the S&P 500 is still up more than 10% so far this year.“We have gone through a two to three week period that has seen really good news get little or no reaction in markets,” wrote Art Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities. “Investors get uneasy at new highs, and there have been 25 new highs for the S&P 500 so far this year.”“There are concerns that the roaring 20′s economic explosion will take longer than just this summer as people slowly get comfortable getting out and about,” he added. “Equities look expensive on a trailing basis, but not from a forward looking viewpoint.”With the market at all-time highs, investors are torn between playing the reopening with shares like retailers or continuing to bet on Big Tech, which just reported blockbuster earnings. The move in equities followed solid gains for the Dow on Monday as investors piled into shares that would benefit the most from an economic reopening. The 30-stock benchmark rallied more than 200 points, while the S&P 500 inched up 0.3%. Retail stocks led the market advance on Monday with Gap and Macy’s rallying more than 7%.Pfizershares rose slightly following quarterly resultsthat beat expectations and raising its 2021 guidance.CVS Healthshares jumped 4.4% after the pharmacy chain and insurance companyalso raised its guidance.United States Steelpopped 7.9% after Credit Suisseupgradedthe stock to outperform from underperform, saying that the surge in prices for steel made it clear that the industry was in a “super cycle.”“Investors could be getting increasingly disappointed that stocks are not doing well in the face of fantastic earnings news,” Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group, told CNBC.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":34,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3570943747362190","authorId":"3570943747362190","name":"ZBM","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/270b131944942f65c2892aebe29ce0dd","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1},"content":"Done! The former, trading at 26 times current earnings, is a blend of value and growth, what some might call a GARP play. The latter, trading at 64 times EPS, is the highest growth of FAAMG names.
\n
But the Amazon Maven has unearthed an interesting finding. At comparable valuations, which is a better buy-and-hold through the mid-2020s?
\n
AAPL and AMZN: same valuation?
\n
The P/E multiple is a popular valuation metric that adds context to a stock’s market price. The numerator tends to be prior-year (trailing), current-year or next-year (forward) earnings per share.
\n
Amazon commands a higher multiple, among other reasons, because of the company’s more aggressive growth profile. Wall Street expects the e-commerce giant to increase EPS by a factor of four in the next five years. Apple, on the other hand, is project to “only” double earnings in the same period.
\n
By 2025, this is what analysts expect of each company’s bottom line, and what the stock’s P/E would be if share prices remained unchanged:
\n
\n
Amazon: 2025 EPS of $172.30, for a P/E of20.4times
\n
Apple: fiscal 2025 EPS of $6.30, for a P/E of21.2times
\n
\n
Given enough time and assuming that current earnings projections are close enough to accurate, Amazon tends to become a less aggressively valued stock by the year. Maybe one day, in the not-too-distant future, shares could even start to look more appealing to value investors.
\n
Which is the best bet?
\n
If Amazon and Apple are valued at roughly the same 2025 P/E, one fair question to ask is: which stock might perform best in the next five years? I can use the earnings multiple as a guide to think through this question.
\n
From the P/E formula, one can derive the following: future stock price is determined by the company’s earnings delivered (the denominator “E”) and how much investors are willing to pay for those earnings (the valuation multiple). Therefore, in the Amazon vs. Apple race to 2025, whichever does best at delivering EPS above consensus and/or commanding a richer earnings multiple wins.
\n
Clearly, this is open for debate since the future in uncertain. But I believe that Amazon stock has a better chance of producing higher gains than Apple through 2025.
\n
First, I find it highly unlikely that AMZN’s earnings multiple will converge from the 60s of today to the low 20s in 2025. This would only be feasible if the company’s growth opportunities dried out quickly, which I am not counting on. On the other hand, Apple’s P/E is more likely to stay around 20 to 25 times, given the more mature profile of the company relative to Amazon.
\n
This is not to say that I expect Amazon’s P/E to expand from 64 times. The opposite is more likely to happen, as the company ages. But if the stock is valued at, say, 40 times EPS in 2025, Amazon would not even need to deliver results beyond expectations to see its stock price double in five years.
\n
Regarding consensus, I also think that Amazon can beat expectations by a wider margin than Apple could. The e-commerce giant has been more aggressive at investing back in the business. The green- and brown-field revenue growth opportunities in e-commerce and cloud seem better.
\n
In addition, Amazon’s margins could expand substantially (see five-year trend below), if or once the company’s online retail business gets closer to maturity. Apple could also improve its margin profile but probably much less so, given how profitable the company already is.
\n
Figure 2: AMZN gross margin vs. operating margin.
\n
Stock Rover
\n
Twitter speaks
\n
Fun fact: Amazon and Apple stock trade at roughly the same 2025 P/E (i.e. 2025 earnings in the denominator) of around 21 times, even though AMZN seems much more expensive at today’s valuations.
