After hitting record highs for three consecutive months, U.S. money supply growth slowed in March, falling to a 10-month low. Although the introduction of stimulus packages such as asset purchases by quantitative easing and the Federal Reserve last year led to high growth in the money supply, the current growth of the money supply seems to be slowing down.

In March 2021, the U.S. money supply increased by 34.1% year-on-year, a slight decrease from 39.1% in February and an increase from 11.3% in March 2020. March data shows that the current high growth in the money supply has lasted for 12 months.

Last year, the money supply grew at the highest rate in history, close to the 1970s. This growth trend is likely to continue, as the United States has now been mired in an economic crisis for a year. From March to mid-September, about 1 million people in the United States filed for unemployment benefits every week.

Although the number of people applying for unemployment benefits finally dropped below 500,000 by early May 2021, there are still more than 3.8 million unemployed people receiving unemployment benefits. Even after a year of lockdown due to the pandemic, the total number has not returned to the level before the outbreak.

The Federal Reserve and the U.S. Treasury are also continuously introducing policies to \"stimulate\" the economy, such as providing subsidies to unemployed workers and providing liquidity to financial institutions. The Federal Reserve has consistently driven new money creation by purchasing trillions of dollars in assets, including government debt.

The image above shows RossBard- The Salerno Money Supply (TMS) indicator, which provides a better measure of money supply fluctuations than M2. This measure of the money supply is different from M2; it includes the Treasury's deposits with the Federal Reserve (excluding short-term deposits, traveler's checks, and retail money funds).

This indicator shows that the U.S. M2 growth rate reached a record high in March 2021, up 24.2% from 26.9% in February. In March last year, M2 grew by 10.1%.

What does that mean?

The growth of the money supply is usually an effective indicator of economic activity. During periods of economic prosperity, commercial banks issue more loans, and the money supply tends to grow rapidly. When money supply growth slows, the economy may also fall into recession.

In addition, the money supply often begins to grow slowly before the economic recession begins. As a recession approaches, the TMS growth rate usually climbs and exceeds the M2 growth rate, as happened in the months leading up to the crises of 2002 and 2009, and a similar situation occurred before the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.

The Federal Reserve's balance sheet grew in tandem with the growth of the U.S. money supply. After initial balance sheet growth at the end of 2019, the Federal Reserve's total assets surged to nearly $7.2 trillion in June and have rarely fallen below the $7 trillion mark since.

The U.S. balance sheet is currently approaching a record high of $8 trillion. These new asset purchase programs have boosted the Federal Reserve's balance sheet far more than the stimulus programs during the Great Recession.

The Federal Reserve's assets are now more than 600% higher than they were before the 2008 financial crisis.

It should be noted that some factors are currently suppressing the growth rate of the money supply. ,"news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".SPX":0.9,".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":5207,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192355407,"gmtCreate":1621150955809,"gmtModify":1704353422427,"author":{"id":"3582603564454110","authorId":"3582603564454110","name":"Jerry6666","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/341ac0d8c7e78a01f49f688b745e56f4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3582603564454110","idStr":"3582603564454110"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"ok","listText":"ok","text":"ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/192355407","repostId":"2135899509","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":5805,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192355133,"gmtCreate":1621150888022,"gmtModify":1704353421457,"author":{"id":"3582603564454110","authorId":"3582603564454110","name":"Jerry6666","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/341ac0d8c7e78a01f49f688b745e56f4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3582603564454110","idStr":"3582603564454110"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"ok","listText":"ok","text":"ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/192355133","repostId":"2135498979","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":7241,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":102100409,"gmtCreate":1620181017001,"gmtModify":1704339835190,"author":{"id":"3582603564454110","authorId":"3582603564454110","name":"Jerry6666","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/341ac0d8c7e78a01f49f688b745e56f4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3582603564454110","idStr":"3582603564454110"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"???","listText":"???","text":"???","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/102100409","repostId":"1143138708","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":4986,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":109668881,"gmtCreate":1619692163243,"gmtModify":1704728085654,"author":{"id":"3582603564454110","authorId":"3582603564454110","name":"Jerry6666","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/341ac0d8c7e78a01f49f688b745e56f4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3582603564454110","idStr":"3582603564454110"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"Long U.S. M2 growth rate reached a record high in March 2021, up 24.2% from 26.9% in February.

These new asset purchase programs have boosted the Federal Reserve's balance sheet far more than the stimulus programs during the Great Recession. For example, since February, the year-on-year growth rate of U.S. commercial and industrial loans has been slowing, falling from 10.1% in February to 3.9% in March, and loan growth turned negative in April. Jeffrey Gundlach, founder and CEO of DoubleLine Capital, said:

“The Federal Reserve has long been manipulating the market.Asset valuations are already very, very high due to the staggering number of stimuli. Since the Federal Reserve began its quantitative easing, there has been some kind of connection between the Fed's continuous expansion of its balance sheet and the S&P 500 index, which is like a law of physics. If you divide the market capitalization of the S&P 500 by the Federal Reserve's balance sheet, it looks like a constant. Even though stock market valuations are high historically, they are still below average compared to bond valuations. Last Wednesday, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the CPI rose 0.8% in April from March, far exceeding market expectations. Excluding food and energy, core inflation rose 0.9% from the previous month, the largest monthly increase since 1982. In addition, compared with the same period last year, the CPI rose 4.2% in April, faster than expected, and the largest increase since September 2008.

April CPI was higher than DoubleLine's forecast. Gunlach said DoubleLine Capital's model predicts that inflation could rise in the coming months and could peak in July.

\"If inflation continues to rise, then people will worry whether it is temporary.\"The yield on 30-year US Treasury bonds is still far from peaking, which is a risk factor to be wary of.Regarding opportunities, Gunlak, who was once very optimistic about commodities, said that short-term commodity price increases were too large.

Gunlach believes that the dollar may rise by the end of the year.

Since January, Gunlack's recommendation has been to hold floating-rate corporate bonds, such as bank loans. the InvescoSenior Loan (BKLN) ETTF.

“BKLN saw mostly net outflows in 2020 because people thought it would be zero interest rates for a considerable period of time, but now people are starting to change their mindset and believe that short-term interest rates will eventually rise as well. Bank loans have the same or longer terms as other investment-grade bonds, so I prefer bank loans.” DoubleLine also recently bought European stocks for the first time. Gunlak said:

“We have never held any European stocks. We don’t like negative interest rates in Europe, and the Eurozone has various structural problems.

DoubleLine’s long-term view is that the dollar is weaker, which is a positive factor for European stocks. European stocks have performed roughly the same or slightly better than US stocks this year. This is another trend that is changing.” Just as the Nasdaq no longer outperformed the S&P 500, suddenly non-U.S. stock markets began to rise, and European stock markets began to outperform slightly.
