$BABA remains massively undervalued. Risks are real, but manageable. Worth a spot in everyone's growth portfolio at these valuations.

(NASDAQ:SOFI) has spent the last couple of weeks languishing around $5. The digital banking platform continues to execute at the highest levels during the regional banking crisis, yet the market finds every excuse to sell the shares. My investment thesis remains ultra Bullish on the stock offering investors the golden opportunity of buying SoFi at the lows while the business continues to excel.

Source: Finviz

Disconnect

As a recap, SoFi reported Q1'23 revenues grew at a 43% clip. The report follows several quarters where the fintech had grown revenues by over 50% while their primary student loan refinancing business was impacted by the ongoing repayment moratorium.

During this whole period of being a public company, the stock has dipped regardless of the strong results. A lot of investors confuse the short-term stock action with the quarterly results due to SoFi trading at all-time lows. In reality, the company has nearly tripled revenue in the last couple of years.

Data by YCharts

The market clearly saw the stock as overvalued when trading up above $15 heading into the SPAC close in late 2021. SoFi has now traded near $5 for going on a year despite the massive sales growth and improvement in profits during the year.

The stock market constantly reprices assets leading to multiple compression in the case of SoFi. A lot of times, investors mistakenly confuse these moves as indicative of the quality of the related company.

SoFi just reported a quarter on May 1 where revenues smashed analyst estimates and grew 43% to reach $460 million. The digital bank even reported adjusted profits reported via the EBITDA metric at $76 million, nearly double estimates.

So either the stock was vastly over valued in the beginning or SoFi is now vastly undervalued. The stock started out trading at a premium valuation when the fintech went public via a SPAC, but the market has gotten far off base here.

SoFi guided to 2023 revenues of ~$2.0 billion and analysts forecast 2024 revenues will reach $2.5 billion for nearly 25% growth next year. The market cap has now fallen to only $4.8 billion in an indication of how whatever premium valuation existed at the time of the SPAC deal has completely disappeared.

A big part of the disconnect is that investors don't see SoFi as being profitable due to the use of an EBITDA metric. Though, the amount is much closer to an adjusted profit metric, a comment on my previous article pointed to how even AMD (AMD) was profitable.

The ironic part here is that AMD is only profitable on a non-GAAP basis. The chip company reported a Q1'23 GAAP loss of $139 million due to the exact same issues reported by SoFi.

Source: Seeking Alpha

In the last quarter, AMD reported a non-GAAP profit of $970 million, or $0.60 per share. The prime additions back to income where stock-based compensation of $305 million and the amortization of acquired intangible assets of $823 million.

Source: AMD Q1'23 earnings release

Our view is that SoFi would see a much better stock price by shifting to an adjusted profit metric and away from the adjusted EBITDA metric that confuses investors into not realizing this is actually closer to an adjusted profit.

Based on the adjusted EBITDA table of SoFi, these same 2 charges for AMD amount to $110 million of non-cash cost leading to an adjusted profit of $65 million. Throwing in restructuring charges and impairment expenses, SoFi would've reported a Q1 adjusted profit of $71 million.

Source: SoFi Q1'23 earnings release

Similar to AMD, investors can use the adjustment tables to incorporate the accurate profits. In the case of SoFi and similar to AMD, the adjusted profits are the best method to value the stock, but unfortunately the data isn't presented in this way.

Unlike AMD, SoFi management presents the case of reaching GAAP profits to the detriment of the stock. On the Q1'23 earnings call, CEO Noto made the following statement that only helps bearish investors push the narrative that SoFi isn't profitable:

These trends increased the visibility and reinforce our goal of achieving positive GAAP net income in Q4 2023.

If SoFi instead stated the company had non-GAAP earnings of $71 million for an EPS of $0.08 based on 929 million shares outstanding, the short narrative would have a far different voice. The market is already willing to value a company like AMD based on non-GAAP numbers and SoFi should be no different considering the excluded charges are generally similar.

No Loan Issue

The market continues to push a false narrative that SoFi somehow has an issue with their loan book. The fintech now has a loan balance on the balance sheet topping $15 billion.

SoFi continues to list all of the loans as held-for-sale due to the intention to ultimately unload these personal and student loans to investors. The biggest issue is the concern that the fintech doesn't correctly handle the expected losses on these loans, but this claim remains inaccurate.

As again highlighted on the Q1'23 earnings call, SoFi reports on a offset to revenues based on any expected lost value in the loans, not a write off due to loan losses:

And in terms of why we get confident in the sense that we would be able to sell the loans at where they're currently marked, every single quarter we work with a third party valuation firm that marks to market each and every one of our loans on an individual basis to account for changes in every single factor that impacts loans. So that's things like the weighted average coupon, default rates, prepayment speeds, benchmark rates, spreads as well as where secondary bonds and residuals are trading. So you see that mark to market take place every single quarter and that flows through the revenue line of our P&L.

CEO Anthony Noto continues to repurchase shares due to his confidence in the financials of the digital bank. The digital banking platform continues to execute at the highest levels during the regional banking crisis, yet the market finds every excuse to sell the shares. My investment thesis remains ultra Bullish on the stock offering investors the golden opportunity of buying SoFi at the lows while the business continues to excel.Source: FinvizDisconnectAs a recap, SoFi reported Q1'23 revenues grew at a 43% clip. The report follows several quarters where the fintech had grown revenues by over 50% while their primary student loan refinancing business was impacted by the ongoing repayment moratorium.During this whole period of being a public company, the stock has dipped regardless of the strong results. A lot of investors confuse the short-term stock action with the quarterly results due to SoFi trading at all-time lows. In reality, the company has nearly tripled revenue in the last couple of years.Data by YChartsThe market clearly saw the stock as overvalued when trading up above $15 heading into the SPAC close in late 2021. SoFi has now traded near $5 for going on a year despite the massive sales growth and improvement in profits during the year. The stock market constantly reprices assets leading to multiple compression in the case of SoFi. A lot of times, investors mistakenly confuse these moves as indicative of the quality of the related company.SoFi just reported a quarter on May 1 where revenues smashed analyst estimates and grew 43% to reach $460 million. The digital bank even reported adjusted profits reported via the EBITDA metric at $76 million, nearly double estimates. So either the stock was vastly over valued in the beginning or SoFi is now vastly undervalued. The stock started out trading at a premium valuation when the fintech went public via a SPAC, but the market has gotten far off base here.SoFi guided to 2023 revenues of ~$2.0 billion and analysts forecast 2024 revenues will reach $2.5 billion for nearly 25% growth next year. The market cap has now fallen to only $4.8 billion in an indication of how whatever premium valuation existed at the time of the SPAC deal has completely disappeared.A big part of the disconnect is that investors don't see SoFi as being profitable due to the use of an EBITDA metric. Though, the amount is much closer to an adjusted profit metric, a comment on my previous article pointed to how even AMD (AMD) was profitable. The ironic part here is that AMD is only profitable on a non-GAAP basis. The chip company reported a Q1'23 GAAP loss of $139 million due to the exact same issues reported by SoFi.Source: Seeking AlphaIn the last quarter, AMD reported a non-GAAP profit of $970 million, or $0.60 per share. The prime additions back to income where stock-based compensation of $305 million and the amortization of acquired intangible assets of $823 million.Source: AMD Q1'23 earnings releaseOur view is that SoFi would see a much better stock price by shifting to an adjusted profit metric and away from the adjusted EBITDA metric that confuses investors into not realizing this is actually closer to an adjusted profit.Based on the adjusted EBITDA table of SoFi, these same 2 charges for AMD amount to $110 million of non-cash cost leading to an adjusted profit of $65 million. Throwing in restructuring charges and impairment expenses, SoFi would've reported a Q1 adjusted profit of $71 million.Source: SoFi Q1'23 earnings releaseSimilar to AMD, investors can use the adjustment tables to incorporate the accurate profits. In the case of SoFi and similar to AMD, the adjusted profits are the best method to value the stock, but unfortunately the data isn't presented in this way.Unlike AMD, SoFi management presents the case of reaching GAAP profits to the detriment of the stock. On the Q1'23 earnings call, CEO Noto made the following statement that only helps bearish investors push the narrative that SoFi isn't profitable:These trends increased the visibility and reinforce our goal of achieving positive GAAP net income in Q4 2023.If SoFi instead stated the company had non-GAAP earnings of $71 million for an EPS of $0.08 based on 929 million shares outstanding, the short narrative would have a far different voice. The market is already willing to value a company like AMD based on non-GAAP numbers and SoFi should be no different considering the excluded charges are generally similar. No Loan IssueThe market continues to push a false narrative that SoFi somehow has an issue with their loan book. The fintech now has a loan balance on the balance sheet topping $15 billion.SoFi continues to list all of the loans as held-for-sale due to the intention to ultimately unload these personal and student loans to investors. The biggest issue is the concern that the fintech doesn't correctly handle the expected losses on these loans, but this claim remains inaccurate. As again highlighted on the Q1'23 earnings call, SoFi reports on a offset to revenues based on any expected lost value in the loans, not a write off due to loan losses:And in terms of why we get confident in the sense that we would be able to sell the loans at where they're currently marked, every single quarter we work with a third party valuation firm that marks to market each and every one of our loans on an individual basis to account for changes in every single factor that impacts loans. So that's things like the weighted average coupon, default rates, prepayment speeds, benchmark rates, spreads as well as where secondary bonds and residuals are trading. So you see that mark to market take place every single quarter and that flows through the revenue line of our P&L.CEO Anthony Noto continues to repurchase shares due to his confidence in the financials of the digital bank. The CEO bought nearly 100K shares since the Q1'23 earnings report for nearly $500K. Noto now owns 6.4 million shares having doubled his stake since last May while the rest of investors have become very pessimistic.Source: FinvizTakeawayThe key investor takeaway is that the market has become very disconnected with the fundamental prospects of SoFi. The fintech is already highly profitable and the market constantly invents red flag to sell the stock that don't actually exist.Investors should continue using the weakness to buy shares alongside CEO Anthony Noto.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":201,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9970022107,"gmtCreate":1683731618510,"gmtModify":1683731622569,"author":{"id":"3582676758474626","authorId":"3582676758474626","name":"Netfalcon","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fd17459172be5f069843f61a0eaccd06","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582676758474626","authorIdStr":"3582676758474626"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","listText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","text":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9970022107","repostId":"9947754108","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":9947754108,"gmtCreate":1683644189205,"gmtModify":1683645109270,"author":{"id":"4127523291683312","authorId":"4127523291683312","name":"Alice Arnault","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d4c33c5460824e1c5ea146fa27a62b02","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4127523291683312","authorIdStr":"4127523291683312"},"themes":[],"title":"Tech analysis 101: ADR vs Stock price: Whats the difference ","htmlText":"Follow me at @Alice Arnault and let us learn and earn together![Lovely] The use of ADR is very common on Tiger express and related news. Now, SoFi will be able to complete its previously announced acquisition of Golden Pacific Bancorp and become a bank holding company.

SoFi plans to capitalize the bank with $750 million, and the bank will have $5.3 billion of assets once the deal with Golden Pacific closes, which is expected to happen in February. Following the news of the bank charter, SoFi's stock shot up.

Here's why SoFi's long-awaited bank charter will improve the company's operations.

Streamlining operations

Despite competing in the banking space, many fintech companies start as tech companies and do not have a formal banking license -- they are not easy to obtain. So, most fintechs tend to partner with licensed banks to do things like hold the deposits they gather from their members (unlicensed banks can't hold deposits on their balance sheet) and originate loans for them in some cases. This typically involves some kind of revenue share. Additionally, because banks can't use deposits to fund loan originations, they have to use higher-cost funding.

One of the main benefits of the bank charter will be enabling SoFi to lower its interest expense, which is the interest SoFi pays on the debt it uses to fund assets such as loans. According to its recent regulatory filing, the company's current funding sources for originations include securitization debt and funding from warehouse facilities. SoFi pays interest on this funding of nearly 4% and 1.6%, respectively. This funding is also not as reliable in certain market conditions. Currently, most savings and checking accounts pay out very little interest, and even a lot of high-yield savings accounts pay much less interest than these higher-cost sources.

With the bank charter, SoFi will be able to transfer all of the deposits in its cash management SoFi Money product that it currently sends to a partner bank back into SoFi to hold. SoFi Money accounts topped 1.16 million at the end of the third quarter, so they should offer a decent source of funding that will also grow in the future. This will significantly lower SoFi's cost of funding loan originations, or it can maintain both sources if it needs them to grow.

Additionally, having a bank charter will make it easier for SoFi to hold loans on its balance sheet, whether that means holding loans for longer periods or to completion. Most fintech consumer lenders sell loans they originate right away to an investor or bank for a fee. But when you hold a loan on the balance sheet, you can collect interest payments every month, and that loan ends up being more profitable over its life, as long as it doesn't go into default.

With a bank charter, SoFi will have more clarity from a regulatory perspective on its operations. It is also another signal to investors that SoFi is a trustworthy lender. While the company has a good reputation, given that it has been originating loans for several years now, I think investors see it as a good sign that a fintech company is willing to take some risk on its balance sheet, although I am not yet sure how long SoFi plans to hold its loans.

In its first presentation, management showed the impact of the bank charter on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). Now, SoFi will be able to complete its previously announced acquisition of Golden Pacific Bancorp and become a bank holding company.SoFi plans to capitalize the bank with $750 million, and the bank will have $5.3 billion of assets once the deal with Golden Pacific closes, which is expected to happen in February. Following the news of the bank charter, SoFi's stock shot up.Here's why SoFi's long-awaited bank charter will improve the company's operations.Image source: Getty Images.Streamlining operationsDespite competing in the banking space, many fintech companies start as tech companies and do not have a formal banking license -- they are not easy to obtain. This will significantly lower SoFi's cost of funding loan originations, or it can maintain both sources if it needs them to grow.Additionally, having a bank charter will make it easier for SoFi to hold loans on its balance sheet, whether that means holding loans for longer periods or to completion. While the numbers have likely changed, as this presentation is now roughly a year old, I think this is illustrative of how helpful the bank charter can be.SoFi January 2021 investor presentation.Hitting a key milestoneWhile the bank charter has been long anticipated, there was some question over it, given some of the regulatory uncertainty in the banking arena in Washington over the past few months. It is also no easy feat for any fintech to obtain a bank charter. The charter will make the deposits that SoFi gathers much more valuable and greatly help the unit economics in its lending division. The company's core services -- delivery and ride-hailing -- had over $2.8 billion in gross merchandise volume spent on its platform in the third quarter of 2021. Add all three of its services together and the company has 22 million monthly transacting users, leaving Grab plenty of room for growth in a Southeast Asian population of 679 million.

Grab's opportunity is extremely large, but the company has not yet proved it can take full advantage. In the most recent quarter, The company's revenue decreased 9% year over year to $157 million. Management cited short-term pandemic lockdowns in certain countries as the reason revenue fell, but some of its biggest markets -- like Singapore -- are largely open for business due to the high vaccination rates. And despite being a $21 billion company, Grab's margin profile is not good. In the first six months of 2021, the company had a gross margin of negative 28% and posted a net loss of over $1.4 billion, a figure that represents 370% of revenue.

To capitalize on the massive market opportunity and become the dominant super-app in Southeast Asia, Grab is going to need a quick turnaround. It already faces competition in the financial services business from Sea Limited and on the delivery and ride-hailing side is GoTo (a merger of two Southeast Asian behemoths Tokopedia and Gojek). If Grab disrupted both of these companies, it would be an amazing feat, but much harder to accomplish with negative gross margins and low growth.

Nu Holdings

Nu Holdings is disrupting the digital financial services industry across Latin America. The banking system in Latin America is dominated by five banks that control up to 85% of all banking revenue in Chile, Brazil, and Mexico. This dominance has resulted in almost no innovation in terms of technology, simplicity, or customer satisfaction in decades. Nu is trying to change this.

The company digitally offers users credit cards services, savings and checking accounts, loan options, investment accounts, and even insurance. These offerings appear to be popular as the three-year compound annual growth rate for customers has been 110% annually, reaching 48 million customers.

What is more important is Nu's ability to satisfy customers. The lack of innovation in the space has caused the established banks to get lots of complaints, according to Nu management. It reported that the biggest banks in the region, on average, receive 1,420 complaints per 1 million customers. Nu's customer-centric approach has resulted in less than 270 per 1 million customers.

The company has a total addressable market of over 650 million people. The digital bank is going after that market and has already started to see success. In Q3 2021, it grew its revenue 208% year over year to $481 million. Its net loss for the period was just $34 million, which grew just 5% year over year, so the company's path to profitability looks very strong.

Nu: The clear winner

Nu looks stronger than Grab in virtually every part of its business, which makes its stock a much better buy today. Nu and Grab have similar market sizes, yet Nu has robust competitive advantages, a better financial position, and much more impressive growth. Nu stock does trade at 42 times sales compared to Grab's 29 times sales, but Nu's quality of operations makes that premium valuation worth paying up for.

There are competitors to Nu in the digital financial services space -- mainly MercadoLibre -- but with such a large opportunity, both Nu and MercadoLibre could win. But since then, SOFI stock has tumbled again, and by mid-day Jan. 27, 2022, it was down to $11.56 per share.

That represents another 22% drop, and in fact, since the end of the year SOFI stock is actually down $4.25 from $15.81 as of Dec. 31. This means it was down 26.9% year-to-date (YTD) when it hit that price. This drop really seems unsustainable, especially since its underlying value is significantly higher.

So what is going on here? Let’s look into SoFi Technologies’ situation more closely.

Where Things Stand With SoFi

I wrote last month that SOFI stock is worth at least $19 per share based on analysts’ base target prices. Moreover, SoFi reported stellar earnings on Nov. 10, with the release of its third-quarter financial results.

In addition, SoFi now has 2.9 million members, up 96% year-over-year. This gives it a huge base to whom it can sell high numbers of financial products.

SoFi provided guidance of $272 million to $282 million for Q4. This is significantly higher than last year but represents only slightly higher than its Q3 revenue of $277.19 million on a non-GAAP basis.

That could be one reason why the stock has been so weak lately. Analysts and investors typically want to see good quarterly consecutive top-line growth. This implies that going forward its year-over-year growth will not decelerate, which is what seems to be happening here.

Where Analysts Stand on SoFi Stock

Nevertheless, analysts’ projections for the stock still seem quite ebullient. For example, Seeking Alpha now shows that the average of 12 analysts is now $20.23. This is higher than the $19 per share price target last month.

So, here we have a situation where analysts are turning more positive on the stock but it keeps falling. I don’t see that continuing for much longer.

In fact, TipRanks.com reports that 10 analysts who have written on the stock in the last 3 months have an average target price of $20.30. This represents an upside of over 75.3% over today’s price.

One of the problems with SoFi’s financials is that so far it is not EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization) profitable and cash flow positive. That could also be a reason why the stock has been so weak lately.

In fact, some investors might want to wait for the company to get to this point before investing in SOFI stock. On the other hand, analysts now project the company to make $1.46 billion in revenue in 2022. This implies a 46% potential upside from estimates of 2021 revenue by analysts.

Since SoFi has a $10.3 billion market cap now, this implies that the price-to-sales (P/S) multiple for 2022 is just 7.1 times. That does not seem very expensive. For example, Morningstar.com reports that the average P/S multiple during 2021 was 14.6 times.

What to Do With SoFi Stock

Recently, analysts have been taking note of the stock’s weakness and its higher underlying value. On Jan. 21, Wedbush initiated coverage on SOFI stock with an “outperform” rating and a $20 price target.

The analyst’s thesis was based on a five-year revenue compound annual growth rate of 28% through 2026. In addition, the analyst pointed out that the company’s clients will have an average FICO score of 750, which will allow it to have high profits and low write-off expenses.

In addition, SoFi recently received a bank charter, which also allows it to have lower funding expenses. It also gives them a competitive advantage over some of their peers.

As a result, investors might want to piggyback on this analyst’s recommendation and average down into the stock. This will allow them to significantly lower their average costs, which is good for long-term profits for the long-term investor.

","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
SoFi Stock Has Dropped 27% in Price This Year, But Analysts Still Love It
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nSoFi Stock Has Dropped 27% in Price This Year, But Analysts Still Love It\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-31 08:25 GMT+8 investorplace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ:SOFI), the financial technology company, is still falling.
