Apple&#39;s household fame stems from its hardware products, but its services segment is the real growth driver right now.</p><p>The company&#39;s products business is headlined by the iPhone, which has an estimated 1.2 billion global users. But the iPad, Mac, and wearables (like the Apple Watch) are also notable contributors to its products revenue, which makes up about 82% of the company&#39;s total revenue. In the recent second quarter of 2022, this segment logged a modest 6.5% growth in sales, year over year.</p><p>That was handily beaten by the services segment, which generated a 17.2% revenue jump over the same period, though it&#39;s a much smaller piece of Apple&#39;s overall business. But with assets like Apple Music, Apple News, Apple Pay, iCloud, and the Apple TV+ streaming platform, Apple&#39;s services have quickly become a focal point for investors.</p><p>That&#39;s because hardware is costly to produce and can only be sold once, whereas Apple&#39;s services are often subscription-based with recurring revenue that maintains a very high gross profit margin above 70%. Speaking of which, Apple is highly profitable overall with $101 billion in net income over the last 12 months on $386 billion of total revenue, and it&#39;s returning truckloads of that money to shareholders -- which is no doubt why it&#39;s a Buffett favorite.</p><p>Aside from its quarterly dividend of $0.23 per share, representing an annualized yield of 0.68%, the company has a new $90 billion stock buyback program in place. That follows $43 billion in buybacks in the last two quarters alone, and $85 billion in Apple&#39;s 2021 full year.</p><h2>Dominating e-commerce, the cloud, and so much more</h2><p>Buffett has an interesting relationship with global e-commerce leader <b>Amazon</b>. He loves the company, but he has repeatedly expressed regret for not buying its stock much, much sooner. Berkshire acquired its first position in 2019, a full 22 years after Amazon&#39;s IPO in 1997. It makes up 0.4% of Berkshire&#39;s portfolio right now, with the position valued at about $1.1 billion.</p><p>Amazon is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the most diverse businesses in the world. Its roots are in e-commerce, which still makes up the majority of its revenue, but it also leads the entire cloud services industry through Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company&#39;s profit engine. Additionally, it has a booming advertising segment responsible for $32.6 billion in sales over the last 12 months, and it also owns a stake in electric vehicle up-and-comer <b>Rivian Automotive</b>.</p><p>The cloud is arguably Amazon&#39;s most intriguing opportunity because, according to some estimates, the industry is set to be worth over $1.5 trillion annually by 2030. Given that AWS leads the sector with $67 billion in revenue over the past year, there&#39;s seemingly a very long runway for growth. In tough economic times when the e-commerce business might lag, AWS is a great asset to have in the toolbox.</p><p>Amazon is very profitable (though less so than Apple) with $21.4 billion in net income on a trailing-12-month basis, from $477.7 billion in revenue. The company doesn&#39;t pay a dividend, but it is returning money to shareholders through its brand-new $10 billion share buyback program.</p><p>Buffett missed the first 22 years of Amazon&#39;s growth, but you don&#39;t have to miss the next 22.</p><h2>America&#39;s No. 1 digital bank</h2><p>The last Buffett stock to buy for added safety in your portfolio is <b>Ally Financial</b>. It&#39;s a brand-new addition to Berkshire&#39;s holdings, and it&#39;s a great pick for investors looking for income thanks to its quarterly dividend of $0.30 per share, which translates to a 3.4% annualized yield.</p><p>Even with interest rates on the rise, that&#39;s a great return, especially when combined with the company&#39;s generous share buyback program. It repurchased $2 billion worth of stock in 2021 and has planned another $2 billion worth in 2022 -- keep in mind, Ally&#39;s market valuation right now is only $10.4 billion.</p><p>Ally&#39;s strength is its diverse product suite, which now spans across 10 categories including mortgages, car finance, and an investment platform, all of which it delivers online. And while the number of active Roku user accounts has increased by nearly 9 million over the past year, the number of streaming hours hasn&#39;t quite kept up and is likely to be under pressure as COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed compared to 2021.</p><p>Having said that, Roku still has a fantastic market opportunity, a leading market share, and excellent momentum. In fact, platform revenue (mainly ad-driven) grew by 49% year-over-year in the fourth quarter and the average Roku user is generating 43% more revenue for the company. With a $725 billion global advertising market to go after (and just 0.3% of it on the platform so far), Roku could still have plenty of growth potential as the streaming landscape continues to grow.</p><h2>An outside-the-box metaverse play</h2><p>It&#39;s no secret that Cathie Wood is a believer in the potential of the metaverse. CEO Elon Musk has been promising that Tesla would roll out version 9 since 2018, immediately creating \"over a million cars\" with essentially autonomous driving capability -- so it's clear why this news has investors excited. Early reviewers of the new software report that \"driving visualization\" [has received] a massive improvement,\" while the verdict on \"actual driving behavior\" is not yet in.</p>\n<p>And many Tesla owners may have to wait a bit longer to take FSD for a spin.</p>\n<p>As industry site Electrek reports, the new version of the software relies on Tesla Vision for its guidance, driving based on camera readings rather than a mix of cameras and radar. The company is warning, however, that the software \"may do the wrong thing at the worst time,\" and that drivers using the feature \"must always keep your hands on the wheel and pay extra attention on the road.\" While monitoring how the software performs in the real world, therefore, Tesla is limiting the rollout to just \"early limited access Beta\" distribution -- meaning not everyone who has paid for FSD will get it immediately.</p>\n<p><b>Now what</b></p>\n<p>What does it mean for investors? Elon Musk has finally delivered on his promise. As is often the case, he took a bit longer to deliver than initially promised -- but as is often also the case, he did eventually deliver.</p>\n<p>Now, we need to see if this version was worth the wait. The better the autonomous driving software turns out to be, the more willing folks -- who have hesitated up till now to pay $10,000 to buy it -- will become. And Wood has been adding shares to Ark&#39;s funds in recent weeks as the stock&#39;s slump has intensified.</p><p>To be fair, there are some valid reasons shares have been under pressure. For one thing, supply chain issues are affecting Roku&#39;s ability to make its hardware devices -- in fact, hardware revenue in the fourth quarter <i>declined</i> 9% year-over-year. And while the number of active Roku user accounts has increased by nearly 9 million over the past year, the number of streaming hours hasn&#39;t quite kept up and is likely to be under pressure as COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed compared to 2021.</p><p>Having said that, Roku still has a fantastic market opportunity, a leading market share, and excellent momentum. In fact, platform revenue (mainly ad-driven) grew by 49% year-over-year in the fourth quarter and the average Roku user is generating 43% more revenue for the company. With a $725 billion global advertising market to go after (and just 0.3% of it on the platform so far), Roku could still have plenty of growth potential as the streaming landscape continues to grow.</p><h2>An outside-the-box metaverse play</h2><p>It&#39;s no secret that Cathie Wood is a believer in the potential of the metaverse. And she&#39;s putting her money where her mouth is by adding shares of spatial data company <b>Matterport</b> to the <b>ARK Autonomous Technology &amp; Robotics ETF</b> ( ARKQ ).</p><p>If you aren&#39;t familiar, Matterport develops the technology that allows for the creation of three-dimensional &#34;digital twins&#34; of physical spaces. If you&#39;ve been in the market for a home, Matterport&#39;s technology is used by some sellers on <b>Redfin</b>&#39;s platform and is also used to highlight vacation rental listings on <b>Vacasa</b>, just to name a couple consumer-facing applications. If you haven&#39;t seen one, check it out -- it is leaps and bounds beyond other &#34;virtual tour&#34; technologies.</p><p>Matterport makes money by selling hardware -- specifically the Matterport Pro2 3D camera -- but the most exciting part of the business is its subscription plans. For example, a real estate agent might subscribe to Matterport&#39;s platform to enhance their listings. You don&#39;t <i>need</i> the professional-grade camera, Matterport&#39;s technology works on Android and iOS devices quite well. And there are potential applications in areas like construction, interior design, insurance underwriting, e-commerce, and much more. While it&#39;s tough to quantify Matterport&#39;s addressable market opportunity, especially since the industry is so young, management believes that it could generate billions in annual recurring (high margin) revenue if its library contained digital twins of just 1% of the buildings in the world.</p><h2>Neither is a low-risk stock</h2><p>Although both of these stocks are far below their highs, that doesn&#39;t mean that I&#39;m trying to call the bottom here. We could see more headwinds -- persistent inflation, more bad news from streaming companies, etc. -- that could certainly cause more pressure in the short term. And both of these companies are likely to be rather volatile for the foreseeable future as their growth stories play out.
