Social gaming experiences are inherently more valuable with more players.\nWhile some VR multiplayer games are cross-platform (i.e., an Oculus player can game with a PS VR player), Facebook will likely tighten up its exclusive content offerings to attract and retain players. As long as the company rolls out ad content in a way that feels relatively organic to Oculus players, Facebook is set up for success in rapidly gaining market share in VR gaming.\nWhat to watch for\nWhile Facebook's VR gaming revenue isn't reported explicitly (yet), the company's \"other revenue\" business segment is primarily Oculus. The company has already begun building out the infrastructure for this business through its recent partnership with Sinopec(NYSE:SHI)through which they aspire to create a 5,000 battery swap station network by 2024. This will give NIO a decisive network advantage in this space just as it begins to really take off in the world's largest electric vehicle market, enabling it to form partnerships with other automakers in the country and drive strong revenue growth from this business alone. Essentially, this would make NIO the number one \"gas station\" company in China as the country and world enter the age of electrification.</p>\n<p>Given that they possess hundreds of patents in battery swap technology, NIO seems to already have the intellectual property moat necessary to transform this potential into reality. Even more important, though, is its competitive positioning to emerge as a long-term leader in the electric vehicle space in China, not only because of the vehicle sales potential it offers, but much more importantly because it is the largest source of consumer data in the world. As a result, NIO will have access to a vast amount of data with which it can improve its A.I. and build one of the best mobility software platforms in the world.</p>\n<p><b>#3. Government Support</b></p>\n<p>Another big reason to believe in NIO's long-term potential stems from the simple fact that it is a leading local company in China in high-priority technology fields. As a result, it will likely enjoy significant support from the Chinese government so that it can serve as a vehicle whereby China can advance its goals towards becoming the pre-eminent global technological superpower.</p>\n<p>This principle has already played out several times to NIO's benefit.</p>\n<p>For example, the government recently gave NIO a RMB7 billion (US$1b) bailout to give it the cash it needed to sustain and scale operations.</p>\n<p>Additionally, government-owned auto manufacturer - Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp - has also assisted NIO by providing it with manufacturing services, enabling it to scale with minimal additional capital investment.</p>\n<p>Perhaps the most glaring example of this was how the Chinese state media recently successfully harmed the reputation of TSLA - NIO's top foreign rival - to the point where the Elon Musk-led company had to issue an apology.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, the Chinese government is making a major push to transition the automotive market towards electric vehicles in an effort to battle its huge pollution problem. It is achieving these aims by offering purchase rebates and tax exemptions for the industry, while also placing restrictions on new gasoline and diesel powered vehicle permits.</p>\n<p><b>#4. Global Expansion</b></p>\n<p>NIO is also poised to begin expanding its sales into global markets, beginning with Norway. Not only will the company be selling its cars there, but it will be building out local physical and digital infrastructure to create a high quality user-friendly ecosystem to add value to its brand and bolster its competitive positioning. Once it has built significant scale in Norway, it will then have a greater position of strength from which to infiltrate the rest of the European market. Given the geopolitical tensions with the United States at the moment as well as Tesla's dominance in the U.S. electric vehicle market, Europe seems like a much more logical choice to begin global expansion.</p>\n<p><b>#5. Crunching The Numbers</b></p>\n<p>Electric Vehicle sales are already growing exponentially - especially in China - and we expect that number to explode much higher in the years to come.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/00cdeb70c618caeddbbd16df936194ad\" tg-width=\"960\" tg-height=\"572\"></p>\n<p>In fact, while just barely over 1.2 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2017,Bloomberg New Energy Finance expects that number to soar to 60 million by 2040. Not only that, but battery and battery charging infrastructure demand will soar as well.</p>\n<p>If NIO can seize on its early leadership in China in both the electric vehicle and battery charging infrastructure businesses and also successfully scale its business internationally, there is certainly room for it to achieve a $1 trillion valuation by 2040. For example, its gross margin is expected to be nearly 20% in 2021 and 2022. TSLA's gross, meanwhile, is around 23% and its net margin is roughly half of that, or ~11.5%.</p>\n<p>NIO's BaaS business should also be higher margin given that it could be entirely automated and the actual real estate could be leased instead of owned in order to free up capital for higher return investment elsewhere. With continued scaling in both businesses and overall positive trends in the business with reduced costs across the board through automation and enhanced data analytics, we think gross margins of 25% and net margins of 15% by 2040 are entirely feasible.</p>\n<p>If NIO were to grab just 7.5% of the global EV market (TSLA's is currently 11%) by 2040, it would be selling ~4.5 million cars per year. We think this share is actually very feasible when you consider that the majority of electric vehicle sales are expected to be in China and that NIO has an inside track on that market given the support it is receiving from the government.</p>\n<p>If the average sale were for $40,000 per electric vehicle, its profit would be ~$6,000 per vehicle, translating to $27 billion in annual profit from auto sales alone. At a 30x price-to-earnings multiple, that would put the automotive business at a $810 billion valuation.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, its BaaS business could likely generate $150 in profits per year per vehicle in its sphere in China. By 2030,it is estimated that there will be 50 million electric vehicles on the road in China and that EVs will account for 40% of total auto sales. A very conservative estimate is that the number of EVs on the road in China will double to 100 million by 2040. If NIO's BaaS business serves 20% of the electric vehicles in China by 2040, that would equate to an additional $3+ billion in annual net income. Once again applying a 30x price-to-earnings multiple, that would equate to roughly another $100 billion in market valuation.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the potential for using its data and autonomous vehicle technology as well as vast BaaS infrastructure to launch an autonomous taxi business network is also immense. While it is hard to know exactly what sort of value this would command as it is hard to project how it would be regulated by the Chinese government and how well consumers would adopt it, it is not a stretch that NIO's scale and capabilities by this point in such a potentially massive market as is offered in China would put the valuation for this business at $100 billion.</p>\n<p>Combining all three businesses gets us to a $1 trillion total valuation under a bullish, but not entirely implausible scenario.</p>\n<p><b>Risk Analysis</b></p>\n<p>While the path to $1 trillion certainly looks viable, there are numerous risks to consider along the way.</p>\n<p>First and foremost, NIO faces a lot of competition from both foreign and domestic companies. TSLA has a large presence in China and overseas and sports a premium brand to go along with an extremely driven and innovative CEO and engineering team. While the Chinese government has helped NIO some already with surviving the TSLA threat, it is unknown the depths that it will have to and be willing to go to continue giving NIO a boost to sustain its competitive standing in its domestic market.</p>\n<p>Of course, NIO also faces competitive pressures from fellow Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers including Baidu(NASDAQ:BIDU), which already has a partnership with a government-owned automaker (BAIC Group) to put 1,000 driverless cars on the roads over the next 3 years as a prelude to establishing an autonomous taxi service in China. Facing off against fellow major domestic players who also have government backing poses another threat to NIO because it means that it cannot solely rely on government assistance to survive and thrive.</p>\n<p>On that same note, it also increases the political risk for NIO. Given that it is not the only horse that China is betting on in the mobility space, if their leadership were to run afoul of the Chinese Communist Party and/or they were to simply lag behind in performance, they could quickly be \"dropped\" by the government and the business could fall into a downward spiral. If Alibaba(NYSE:BABA) could face this, NIO certainly could too. If nothing else, the Chinese government could easily seize some or all of NIO's physical or intellectual property for state use, depriving NIO shareholders of much of their equity value.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, expanding overseas could also be complicated by the fact that China is currently dealing with growing geopolitical tensions with other Asia-Pacific nations, Europe, and the United States. As a result, trade barriers may go up, especially in such high-priority technologies as mobility and autonomous technology. The U.S., Europe, Japan, Korea, and even India have well-established automobile industries and if they feel threatened by a Chinese competitor, they may well decide to throw up barriers to entry in their markets.</p>\n<p>Of course, as the China hustle pointed out, many Chinese companies have a troubling track record of fudging accounting numbers. As a result, investors should always view Chinese company - to include NIO's - financial numbers with a healthy dose of skepticism. While it is very possible - if not likely - that NIO's numbers are completely accurate, it is still a risk that needs to be considered.</p>\n<p>Last, but not least, NIO is currently priced quite expensively as it is still running up massive losses and trades at 71 times expected 2021 gross income. Therefore, the range of potential future outcomes is quite wide and investors could very well be dramatically overpaying by purchasing at today's prices. It should be viewed as a highly speculative investment accordingly.</p>\n<p><b>Investor Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>NIO is currently struggling to turn a profit and has had to be bailed out by the Chinese government. At the same time, its valuation is sky-high. Here are five reasons why it could successfully achieve that valuation:</p>\n<p><b>#1. \"Gas Station\" Of The Future</b></p>\n<p>NIO is a major designer and manufacturer of high-tech electric vehicles in China and as a result competes with the likes of Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)in innovative technologies like connectivity, batteries, autonomous mobility, and artificial intelligence.</p>\n<p>NIO's status as an emerging leader in these innovative technologies is perhaps the biggest reason to believe that they could become a multi-bagger from today's already lofty valuation and become a true mega cap.</p>\n<p>For example, its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) potential is immense. The company has already begun building out the infrastructure for this business through its recent partnership with Sinopec(NYSE:SHI)through which they aspire to create a 5,000 battery swap station network by 2024. This will give NIO a decisive network advantage in this space just as it begins to really take off in the world's largest electric vehicle market, enabling it to form partnerships with other automakers in the country and drive strong revenue growth from this business alone. Essentially, this would make NIO the number one \"gas station\" company in China as the country and world enter the age of electrification.</p>\n<p>Given that they possess hundreds of patents in battery swap technology, NIO seems to already have the intellectual property moat necessary to transform this potential into reality. As a result, NIO will have access to a vast amount of data with which it can improve its A.I. and build one of the best mobility software platforms in the world.</p>\n<p><b>#3. Government Support</b></p>\n<p>Another big reason to believe in NIO's long-term potential stems from the simple fact that it is a leading local company in China in high-priority technology fields. As a result, it will likely enjoy significant support from the Chinese government so that it can serve as a vehicle whereby China can advance its goals towards becoming the pre-eminent global technological superpower.</p>\n<p>This principle has already played out several times to NIO's benefit.</p>\n<p>For example, the government recently gave NIO a RMB7 billion (US$1b) bailout to give it the cash it needed to sustain and scale operations.</p>\n<p>Additionally, government-owned auto manufacturer - Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp - has also assisted NIO by providing it with manufacturing services, enabling it to scale with minimal additional capital investment.</p>\n<p>Perhaps the most glaring example of this was how the Chinese state media recently successfully harmed the reputation of TSLA - NIO's top foreign rival - to the point where the Elon Musk-led company had to issue an apology.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, the Chinese government is making a major push to transition the automotive market towards electric vehicles in an effort to battle its huge pollution problem. It is achieving these aims by offering purchase rebates and tax exemptions for the industry, while also placing restrictions on new gasoline and diesel powered vehicle permits.</p>\n<p><b>#4. Global Expansion</b></p>\n<p>NIO is also poised to begin expanding its sales into global markets, beginning with Norway. Not only will the company be selling its cars there, but it will be building out local physical and digital infrastructure to create a high quality user-friendly ecosystem to add value to its brand and bolster its competitive positioning. Once it has built significant scale in Norway, it will then have a greater position of strength from which to infiltrate the rest of the European market. Given the geopolitical tensions with the United States at the moment as well as Tesla's dominance in the U.S. electric vehicle market, Europe seems like a much more logical choice to begin global expansion.</p>\n<p><b>#5. Not only that, but battery and battery charging infrastructure demand will soar as well.</p>\n<p>If NIO can seize on its early leadership in China in both the electric vehicle and battery charging infrastructure businesses and also successfully scale its business internationally, there is certainly room for it to achieve a $1 trillion valuation by 2040. For example, its gross margin is expected to be nearly 20% in 2021 and 2022. TSLA's gross, meanwhile, is around 23% and its net margin is roughly half of that, or ~11.5%.</p>\n<p>NIO's BaaS business should also be higher margin given that it could be entirely automated and the actual real estate could be leased instead of owned in order to free up capital for higher return investment elsewhere. With continued scaling in both businesses and overall positive trends in the business with reduced costs across the board through automation and enhanced data analytics, we think gross margins of 25% and net margins of 15% by 2040 are entirely feasible.</p>\n<p>If NIO were to grab just 7.5% of the global EV market (TSLA's is currently 11%) by 2040, it would be selling ~4.5 million cars per year. We think this share is actually very feasible when you consider that the majority of electric vehicle sales are expected to be in China and that NIO has an inside track on that market given the support it is receiving from the government.</p>\n<p>If the average sale were for $40,000 per electric vehicle, its profit would be ~$6,000 per vehicle, translating to $27 billion in annual profit from auto sales alone. At a 30x price-to-earnings multiple, that would put the automotive business at a $810 billion valuation.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, its BaaS business could likely generate $150 in profits per year per vehicle in its sphere in China. By 2030,it is estimated that there will be 50 million electric vehicles on the road in China and that EVs will account for 40% of total auto sales. Here are five reasons why it could successfully achieve that valuation:\n#1. \"Gas Station\" Of The Future\nNIO is a major designer and manufacturer of high-tech electric vehicles in China and as a result competes with the likes of Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)in innovative technologies like connectivity, batteries, autonomous mobility, and artificial intelligence.\nNIO's status as an emerging leader in these innovative technologies is perhaps the biggest reason to believe that they could become a multi-bagger from today's already lofty valuation and become a true mega cap.\nFor example, its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) potential is immense. The company has already begun building out the infrastructure for this business through its recent partnership with Sinopec(NYSE:SHI)through which they aspire to create a 5,000 battery swap station network by 2024. This will give NIO a decisive network advantage in this space just as it begins to really take off in the world's largest electric vehicle market, enabling it to form partnerships with other automakers in the country and drive strong revenue growth from this business alone. Even more important, though, is its competitive positioning to emerge as a long-term leader in the electric vehicle space in China, not only because of the vehicle sales potential it offers, but much more importantly because it is the largest source of consumer data in the world. As a result, NIO will have access to a vast amount of data with which it can improve its A.I. and build one of the best mobility software platforms in the world.\n#3. Government Support\nAnother big reason to believe in NIO's long-term potential stems from the simple fact that it is a leading local company in China in high-priority technology fields. As a result, it will likely enjoy significant support from the Chinese government so that it can serve as a vehicle whereby China can advance its goals towards becoming the pre-eminent global technological superpower.\nThis principle has already played out several times to NIO's benefit.\nFor example, the government recently gave NIO a RMB7 billion (US$1b) bailout to give it the cash it needed to sustain and scale operations.\nAdditionally, government-owned auto manufacturer - Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp - has also assisted NIO by providing it with manufacturing services, enabling it to scale with minimal additional capital investment.\nPerhaps the most glaring example of this was how the Chinese state media recently successfully harmed the reputation of TSLA - NIO's top foreign rival - to the point where the Elon Musk-led company had to issue an apology.\nFurthermore, the Chinese government is making a major push to transition the automotive market towards electric vehicles in an effort to battle its huge pollution problem. It is achieving these aims by offering purchase rebates and tax exemptions for the industry, while also placing restrictions on new gasoline and diesel powered vehicle permits.\n#4. Global Expansion\nNIO is also poised to begin expanding its sales into global markets, beginning with Norway. Not only will the company be selling its cars there, but it will be building out local physical and digital infrastructure to create a high quality user-friendly ecosystem to add value to its brand and bolster its competitive positioning. Once it has built significant scale in Norway, it will then have a greater position of strength from which to infiltrate the rest of the European market. Given the geopolitical tensions with the United States at the moment as well as Tesla's dominance in the U.S. electric vehicle market, Europe seems like a much more logical choice to begin global expansion.\n#5. Crunching The Numbers\nElectric Vehicle sales are already growing exponentially - especially in China - and we expect that number to explode much higher in the years to come.\n\nIn fact, while just barely over 1.2 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2017,Bloomberg New Energy Finance expects that number to soar to 60 million by 2040. Not only that, but battery and battery charging infrastructure demand will soar as well.\nIf NIO can seize on its early leadership in China in both the electric vehicle and battery charging infrastructure businesses and also successfully scale its business internationally, there is certainly room for it to achieve a $1 trillion valuation by 2040. For example, its gross margin is expected to be nearly 20% in 2021 and 2022. TSLA's gross, meanwhile, is around 23% and its net margin is roughly half of that, or ~11.5%.\nNIO's BaaS business should also be higher margin given that it could be entirely automated and the actual real estate could be leased instead of owned in order to free up capital for higher return investment elsewhere. With continued scaling in both businesses and overall positive trends in the business with reduced costs across the board through automation and enhanced data analytics, we think gross margins of 25% and net margins of 15% by 2040 are entirely feasible.\nIf NIO were to grab just 7.5% of the global EV market (TSLA's is currently 11%) by 2040, it would be selling ~4.5 million cars per year. We think this share is actually very feasible when you consider that the majority of electric vehicle sales are expected to be in China and that NIO has an inside track on that market given the support it is receiving from the government.\nIf the average sale were for $40,000 per electric vehicle, its profit would be ~$6,000 per vehicle, translating to $27 billion in annual profit from auto sales alone. At a 30x price-to-earnings multiple, that would put the automotive business at a $810 billion valuation.\nMeanwhile, its BaaS business could likely generate $150 in profits per year per vehicle in its sphere in China. By 2030,it is estimated that there will be 50 million electric vehicles on the road in China and that EVs will account for 40% of total auto sales. A very conservative estimate is that the number of EVs on the road in China will double to 100 million by 2040. If NIO's BaaS business serves 20% of the electric vehicles in China by 2040, that would equate to an additional $3+ billion in annual net income. Once again applying a 30x price-to-earnings multiple, that would equate to roughly another $100 billion in market valuation.\nMeanwhile, the potential for using its data and autonomous vehicle technology as well as vast BaaS infrastructure to launch an autonomous taxi business network is also immense. While it is hard to know exactly what sort of value this would command as it is hard to project how it would be regulated by the Chinese government and how well consumers would adopt it, it is not a stretch that NIO's scale and capabilities by this point in such a potentially massive market as is offered in China would put the valuation for this business at $100 billion.\nCombining all three businesses gets us to a $1 trillion total valuation under a bullish, but not entirely implausible scenario.\nRisk Analysis\nWhile the path to $1 trillion certainly looks viable, there are numerous risks to consider along the way.\nFirst and foremost, NIO faces a lot of competition from both foreign and domestic companies. TSLA has a large presence in China and overseas and sports a premium brand to go along with an extremely driven and innovative CEO and engineering team. While the Chinese government has helped NIO some already with surviving the TSLA threat, it is unknown the depths that it will have to and be willing to go to continue giving NIO a boost to sustain its competitive standing in its domestic market.\nOf course, NIO also faces competitive pressures from fellow Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers including Baidu(NASDAQ:BIDU), which already has a partnership with a government-owned automaker (BAIC Group) to put 1,000 driverless cars on the roads over the next 3 years as a prelude to establishing an autonomous taxi service in China. Facing off against fellow major domestic players who also have government backing poses another threat to NIO because it means that it cannot solely rely on government assistance to survive and thrive.\nOn that same note, it also increases the political risk for NIO. Given that it is not the only horse that China is betting on in the mobility space, if their leadership were to run afoul of the Chinese Communist Party and/or they were to simply lag behind in performance, they could quickly be \"dropped\" by the government and the business could fall into a downward spiral. If Alibaba(NYSE:BABA) could face this, NIO certainly could too. If nothing else, the Chinese government could easily seize some or all of NIO's physical or intellectual property for state use, depriving NIO shareholders of much of their equity value.\nFurthermore, expanding overseas could also be complicated by the fact that China is currently dealing with growing geopolitical tensions with other Asia-Pacific nations, Europe, and the United States. As a result, trade barriers may go up, especially in such high-priority technologies as mobility and autonomous technology. The U.S., Europe, Japan, Korea, and even India have well-established automobile industries and if they feel threatened by a Chinese competitor, they may well decide to throw up barriers to entry in their markets.\nOf course, as the China hustle pointed out, many Chinese companies have a troubling track record of fudging accounting numbers. As a result, investors should always view Chinese company - to include NIO's - financial numbers with a healthy dose of skepticism. While it is very possible - if not likely - that NIO's numbers are completely accurate, it is still a risk that needs to be considered.\nLast, but not least, NIO is currently priced quite expensively as it is still running up massive losses and trades at 71 times expected 2021 gross income. Therefore, the range of potential future outcomes is quite wide and investors could very well be dramatically overpaying by purchasing at today's prices. It should be viewed as a highly speculative investment accordingly.\nInvestor Takeaway\nNIO is currently struggling to turn a profit and has had to be bailed out by the Chinese government. At the same time, its valuation is sky-high. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug despite objections from its own scientific advisory panel, which voted nearly unanimously that clinical trials did not demonstrate its effectiveness.</p>\n<p>Medicare typically covers FDA-approved drugs - but this <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> comes with an eye-popping price tag set by its maker - $56,000 per patient annually. That figure does not include other associated care that could add tens of thousands of dollars of additional costs.</p>\n<p>Aduhelm will be administered by healthcare providers, and thus will be covered under Part B, rather than the Part D prescription drug program. And the impact on Part B finances could be huge. The premium paid by enrollees - which covers 25% of program costs - could rise sharply. So could the remainder of Part B costs, which are covered by all taxpayers.</p>\n<p>Predicting actual costs is speculative at this point due to uncertainty about the number of patients Medicare decides should have access to Aduhelm. But even a conservative estimate of $29 billion annually, from the Kaiser Family Foundation https://bit.ly/3jUrSpM, would nearly double Part B spending on drugs, which totaled $37 billion in 2019. (https://bit.ly/3jUrSpM)</p>\n<p>Medicare’s trustees will need to take into account the program’s likely spending on Aduhelm in 2022 as it sets the Part B premium, which typically is announced in November. And the new drug likely will have other impacts on the costs experienced by Medicare beneficiaries.</p>\n<p>Many enrollees in traditional Medicare also have supplemental Medigap policies that cover their coinsurance costs. Premiums for those policies could rise as insurers anticipate higher outlays associated with Aduhelm. And 10% of traditional Medicare enrollees do not have supplemental coverage, so they would be subject to the program’s 20% cost-sharing requirement for Aduhelm - roughly $11,500 per year.</p>\n<p>Out-of-pocket costs also would be an issue for enrollees in Medicare Advantage, the privately offered managed care alternative to the traditional program. Most Advantage enrollees are in plans that charge 20% coinsurance for Part B drugs provided in-network, mirroring the traditional program, according to Kaiser - the co-insurance rates can be much higher out of network.</p>\n<p>Medicare typically covers FDA-approved drugs, but it can conduct its own reviews in order to decide which types of patients should be covered. In the case of Aduhelm, Medicare could limit use to patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's. Just last week, the FDA narrowed its own recommendation for prescription of the drug, saying it should be used only with patients who have mild cognitive impairment or early dementia.</p>\n<p>Congress also could step in with legislation that mitigates any impact on Medicare enrollees. More broadly, the unusual FDA approval process and high cost for this drug could add fuel to the debate among legislators about broader drug-pricing reform.</p>\n<p>“This gives credence to the argument that the pharmaceutical industry cannot be relied on to deliver value to patients,” said Rachel Sachs, a professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis who wrote about the Aduhelm controversy https://bit.ly/3hrAzX7 recently for the journal Health Affairs. (https://bit.ly/3hrAzX7)</p>\n<p>OTHER PRESSURES</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> other factors could also put upward pressure on the Part B premium next year.</p>\n<p>Medicare increased the Part B premium this year by just $3.90, to $148.50 per month. But the increase actually was on track to be larger - Congress stepped in to cap it at 25% of whatever it would have been if Medicare had followed the usual formula, as part of a COVID-19 relief bill. That could set the stage for a larger “catch-up” increase this year.</p>\n<p>Healthcare utilization is another wild card. Despite the big surge in healthcare utilization last year associated with COVID-19, overall consumption of healthcare services fell dramatically during the lockdown last year. A key question is how this will impact utilization of services by Medicare enrollees next year. Utilization could be higher than normal as the pandemic recedes, putting further pressure on the Part B premium.</p>\n<p>THE COLA FACTOR</p>\n<p>The Aduhelm drama will play out against the backdrop of another pocketbook issue for seniors next year - the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).</p>\n<p>The recent surge in inflation has some forecasters predicting a very hefty COLA next year. The widely watched Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) jumped 5% in May from a year earlier - the biggest gain since August 2008, when it rose 5.3%. The final COLA number will be decided by monthly data during the third quarter for the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).</p>\n<p>But for seniors who are enrolled in both Social Security and Medicare, the key figure is the net COLA after the Medicare Part B premium is deducted. Typically, some portion of the COLA is gobbled up by higher Part B premium costs. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug despite objections from its own scientific advisory panel, which voted nearly unanimously that clinical trials did not demonstrate its effectiveness.\nMedicare typically covers FDA-approved drugs - but this one comes with an eye-popping price tag set by its maker - $56,000 per patient annually. That figure does not include other associated care that could add tens of thousands of dollars of additional costs.\nAduhelm will be administered by healthcare providers, and thus will be covered under Part B, rather than the Part D prescription drug program. And the impact on Part B finances could be huge. The premium paid by enrollees - which covers 25% of program costs - could rise sharply. So could the remainder of Part B costs, which are covered by all taxpayers.\nPredicting actual costs is speculative at this point due to uncertainty about the number of patients Medicare decides should have access to Aduhelm. But even a conservative estimate of $29 billion annually, from the Kaiser Family Foundation https://bit.ly/3jUrSpM, would nearly double Part B spending on drugs, which totaled $37 billion in 2019. (https://bit.ly/3jUrSpM)\nMedicare’s trustees will need to take into account the program’s likely spending on Aduhelm in 2022 as it sets the Part B premium, which typically is announced in November. And the new drug likely will have other impacts on the costs experienced by Medicare beneficiaries.\nMany enrollees in traditional Medicare also have supplemental Medigap policies that cover their coinsurance costs. Premiums for those policies could rise as insurers anticipate higher outlays associated with Aduhelm. And 10% of traditional Medicare enrollees do not have supplemental coverage, so they would be subject to the program’s 20% cost-sharing requirement for Aduhelm - roughly $11,500 per year.\nOut-of-pocket costs also would be an issue for enrollees in Medicare Advantage, the privately offered managed care alternative to the traditional program. Most Advantage enrollees are in plans that charge 20% coinsurance for Part B drugs provided in-network, mirroring the traditional program, according to Kaiser - the co-insurance rates can be much higher out of network.\nMedicare typically covers FDA-approved drugs, but it can conduct its own reviews in order to decide which types of patients should be covered. In the case of Aduhelm, Medicare could limit use to patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's. Just last week, the FDA narrowed its own recommendation for prescription of the drug, saying it should be used only with patients who have mild cognitive impairment or early dementia.\nCongress also could step in with legislation that mitigates any impact on Medicare enrollees. More broadly, the unusual FDA approval process and high cost for this drug could add fuel to the debate among legislators about broader drug-pricing reform.\n“This gives credence to the argument that the pharmaceutical industry cannot be relied on to deliver value to patients,” said Rachel Sachs, a professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis who wrote about the Aduhelm controversy https://bit.ly/3hrAzX7 recently for the journal Health Affairs. (https://bit.ly/3hrAzX7)\nOTHER PRESSURES\nTwo other factors could also put upward pressure on the Part B premium next year.\nMedicare increased the Part B premium this year by just $3.90, to $148.50 per month. But the increase actually was on track to be larger - Congress stepped in to cap it at 25% of whatever it would have been if Medicare had followed the usual formula, as part of a COVID-19 relief bill. That could set the stage for a larger “catch-up” increase this year.\nHealthcare utilization is another wild card. Despite the big surge in healthcare utilization last year associated with COVID-19, overall consumption of healthcare services fell dramatically during the lockdown last year. A key question is how this will impact utilization of services by Medicare enrollees next year. Utilization could be higher than normal as the pandemic recedes, putting further pressure on the Part B premium.\nTHE COLA FACTOR\nThe Aduhelm drama will play out against the backdrop of another pocketbook issue for seniors next year - the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).\nThe recent surge in inflation has some forecasters predicting a very hefty COLA next year. The widely watched Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) jumped 5% in May from a year earlier - the biggest gain since August 2008, when it rose 5.3%. The final COLA number will be decided by monthly data during the third quarter for the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).\nBut for seniors who are enrolled in both Social Security and Medicare, the key figure is the net COLA after the Medicare Part B premium is deducted. Typically, some portion of the COLA is gobbled up by higher Part B premium costs. That might not sound like some shocking revelation, but trust me, I had all but relegated the tablet to video watching and light gaming duties. Since this month’s release of the iPadOS 15 beta, however, I’ve left my laptop mostly behind and have done the vast majority of my work from the iPad.</p>\n<p>Now I have even stronger feelings for what Apple Inc. needs to change about the iPad—and it goes beyond software. It’s time for a giant screen, one in the 14-inch to 16-inch range. I love the speed, touchscreen, versatility and Magic Keyboard, but the 12.9-inch display is far too small for someone accustomed to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.</p>\n<p>And I’m not the only one who thinks that: I’m told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores a couple of years down the road at the earliest. They’re unlikely for next year—with Apple’s attention on a redesigned iPad Pro in the current sizes for 2022—and it’s possible they never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for many people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1dfbe3939d99fa08873818e1774ac143\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1333\"><span>Photographer: Nina Riggio/Bloomberg</span></p>\n<p>Speaking of the iPad and Mac becoming more similar, I think Apple has absolutely moved the needle with the iPad Pro, when it comes to its software, but it still ultimately needs to allow Mac apps and Mac-like multitasking with more flexible arrangements of app windows.</p>\n<p>I’m liking the multitasking improvements so far in the iPad beta. The biggest change there for me is the ability to launch apps into split view from the home screen, rather than just from the dock. I’m digging the App Library, which is basically now the iPad version of Launchpad on the Mac.</p>\n<p>But I’d still like the ability to have four or five easily resizable and movable windows in front of me at once like I can on my Mac. Or on Windows, which just showed off a new version last week with a cleaner interface. And I’d like to be able to run some of my Mac apps, such as those for work, that don’t exist on the iPad. A larger iPad Pro would be the perfect place for both of those enhancements. It’s time for Apple to rip off the Band-Aid and go all in on the iPad.</p>\n<p><b>The Bench</b></p>\n<p><b>Amazon explores AR glasses and a foldable Kindle e-reader.</b>Apple’s labs in Cupertino, California, aren’t the only ones cooking up new projects. While Amazon.com Inc. is still at work on many home gadgets like Echos and a future home robot, it also has its eyes on mobile devices, according to a person with knowledge of the company’s explorations. That includes long-term plans for augmented reality glasses (of course, a space Apple plans to enter) and even internal discussion of a Kindle e-reader with a foldable screen, after Samsung popularized the technology.</p>\n<p><b>Apple’s App Store revenue machine keeps growing.</b>Apple continues to have several billion reasons to protect its App Store from lawmakers. The company generated $12 billion in revenue from the App Store globally in the first half of 2021, up 18% from the same period a year ago, according to estimates from Sensor Tower shared exclusively with Bloomberg Power On. That even takes into account some apps moving to a 15% revenue share as part of Apple’s small business program.</p>\n<p><b>Peloton takes on the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor.</b>Peloton Interactive Inc. is ready to move beyond bikes and treadmills and into wearables, a natural extension of the fitness technology space. The company is working on a heart rate monitor for the arm to interact with the Peloton phone app and its exercise equipment. My guess is that’s only the beginning for their wearable ambitions, though.</p>\n<p><b>Speaking of the Apple Watch, new models aplenty are coming.</b>Apple has a long roadmap ahead for the watch. On tap for this year:a bit of a redesign with an upgraded screen, faster processor and new wireless technology. For next year, expect a more iterative update to the flagship model that adds a body temperature sensor alongside a new Apple Watch SE and an explorer edition with a more rugged frame. A blood sugar monitor is further off.</p>\n<p><b>Roster Changes</b></p>\n<p>Since the project started to take shape around 2014, Apple’s self-driving car team has seen several leadership changes. But in 2018, it gained some management stability with the hire of Doug Field, a vice president who now runs the effort after steering Tesla Inc.’s development of the Model 3.</p>\n<p>This year, however, the car team underwent some more change: At least three top members of the group departed this year: Benjamin Lyon, Jaime Waydo and Dave Scott, who worked on engineering, safety systems and robotics, respectively. More recently,Apple hired Ulrich Kranz as a top lieutenant to Field. Kranz is an auto industry veteran who helped oversee the development of BMW’s i3 electric car and i8 hybrid and held leading roles at self-driving startups Canoo and Faraday Future. Kranz’s résumé isn’t exactly a slam dunk in the car world, with the BMWs being panned by some design critics and both of his startups mostly failing, but his experience reaffirms Apple’s ultimate ambitions.</p>\n<p>These weren’t the only changes to the top levels of Apple’s car team. The company generated $12 billion in revenue from the App Store globally in the first half of 2021, up 18% from the same period a year ago, according to estimates from Sensor Tower shared exclusively with Bloomberg Power On. That even takes into account some apps moving to a 15% revenue share as part of Apple’s small business program.\nPeloton takes on the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor.Peloton Interactive Inc. is ready to move beyond bikes and treadmills and into wearables, a natural extension of the fitness technology space. The company is working on a heart rate monitor for the arm to interact with the Peloton phone app and its exercise equipment. A blood sugar monitor is further off.\nRoster Changes\nSince the project started to take shape around 2014, Apple’s self-driving car team has seen several leadership changes. But in 2018, it gained some management stability with the hire of Doug Field, a vice president who now runs the effort after steering Tesla Inc.’s development of the Model 3.\nThis year, however, the car team underwent some more change: At least three top members of the group departed this year: Benjamin Lyon, Jaime Waydo and Dave Scott, who worked on engineering, safety systems and robotics, respectively. More recently,Apple hired Ulrich Kranz as a top lieutenant to Field. Kranz is an auto industry veteran who helped oversee the development of BMW’s i3 electric car and i8 hybrid and held leading roles at self-driving startups Canoo and Faraday Future. Kranz’s résumé isn’t exactly a slam dunk in the car world, with the BMWs being panned by some design critics and both of his startups mostly failing, but his experience reaffirms Apple’s ultimate ambitions.\nThese weren’t the only changes to the top levels of Apple’s car team.
