Some Elon Musk-style boosterism, similar to what he did for the electric vehicle industry, might be just what they need to stage a 2022 turnaround.</p><p>Musk has floated the idea of taking his SpaceX company public, and the parallel with EVs would be hard to ignore. Space exploration and electric vehicles both focus on a future that isn’t quite here yet, promising massive opportunities as new technologies evolve into viable companies.</p><p>But while stocks tied to the EV revolution soared this year, space-focused names -- after some initial euphoria -- badly trailed the broad market. High-profile tourist flights by Richard Branson’s publicly traded Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc., and by Jeff Bezos’s privately held Blue Origin and Musk’s SpaceX, weren’t enough to overcome doubts about whether this is a real business or just a divertissement for billionaires.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6016014c69a52502ab88d7ca1d3bb8db\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>“From commercial space launches related to satellites and space tourism, or even more futuristic things like asteroid mining -- a lot of it is a completely unproven industry, and it is not clear how much demand there is,” said Jay Jacobs, head of research and strategy at Global X Management Co. What’s more, there aren’t many pure-play public companies apart from Virgin Galactic, said Jacobs, whose firm manages exchange-traded funds but hasn’t started one for space.</p><p>This leaves the space sector without a clear front-runner or milestones that could help public investors judge progress. It doesn’t help that the companies trading on exchanges lack a charismatic cheerleader to focus the market’s attention. If Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. chooses to go public, that would solve some of those issues all at once.</p><p>“It would be a tent-pole IPO,” said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research. “It is that single asset that can focus people’s attention and make them understand what is space investing about. It isn’t about going to Mars or tourism, but getting hardware to space that is current, updated technology.”</p><p>SpaceX didn’t respond to a request for comment.</p><p>Musk is often credited with leading the automotive industry toward an electric future. It was only after Tesla Inc.’s runaway success last year -- both as a company and as a stock -- that other EV names really started garnering attention. Musk could do the same for space stocks, according to Andrew Chanin, chief executive of ProcureAM, which manages a space ETF.</p><p><b>Flying Blind</b></p><p>“When you see a company worth half a trillion dollars entering the markets, that is bound to get attract some attention for other stocks in that market,” Chanin said. “There is still a public misconception of what space is, how space affects us, and there is this massive educational curve that we still haven’t seen investors truly grasp.”</p><p>Musk has been stirring the pot in Musk-like fashion, musing about turning carbon dioxide into spacecraft fuel, building massive rockets,going to Mars within a decade and the potential for bankruptcy in almost the same breath. </p><p>Space tourism flights drew an outsized amount of news coverage, even though they just scratch the surface of the industry, Chanin said. The future promises commercial uses that could include applications in military and defense, telecommunications, mining, weather tracking and deep space exploration.</p><p>For now, though, starry-eyed investors have been stuck in low orbit, and sometimes in a black hole. Assuming I'm right,&nbsp;<b>BioNTech</b> (NASDAQ:BNTX) should soar if the market crashes.</p>\n<p>A massive market sell-off due to COVID-19 worries would almost certainly light a fire beneath the stocks of the leading vaccine makers. My view is that BioNTech would be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the biggest winners in the group.</p>\n<p>BioNTech and its partner <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PFE\">Pfizer</a></b> (NYSE:PFE) are already moving forward with plans to test a vaccine that specifically targets the delta variant. That gives the companies a head start. BioNTech is by far the smallest of the companies with COVID-19 vaccines already on the market, which makes its shares more likely to jump higher on a positive catalyst. It's also easily the cheapest of these vaccine stocks, based on forward earnings multiples.</p>\n<p>What if there isn't an imminent market crash? BioNTech is still set to rake in billions of dollars with sales of its COVID-19 vaccine. The company will almost certainly use its growing cash stockpile to invest in expanding its pipeline. I think that BioNTech will be a winner over the long term, regardless of what happens over the short term.</p>\n<h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DG\">Dollar General</a></h3>\n<p>I've maintained for a long time that&nbsp;<b>Dollar <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a></b> (NYSE:DG) is one of the best stocks to own during a market downturn. That view seemed to be confirmed during the big market meltdown last year.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b0e75aa27d2d22b4296c80687da5be97\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>DG data by YCharts.</p>\n<p>Shares of Dollar General fell at first, but not nearly as much as most stocks did. Dollar General stock also rebounded much more quickly and trounced the overall market's return throughout the rest of the year.</p>\n<p>During uncertain times, consumers tighten their purse strings. That makes discount retailers such as Dollar General more attractive than ever.</p>\n<p>Even when the overall market performs well, though, Dollar General should still be able to grow. As a case in point, the company's shares delivered more than double the gain that the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> index did in the five years leading up to 2020 when the market was roaring.</p>\n<p>I think that Dollar General will be able to continue to beat the market. It's moving forward with an aggressive expansion strategy. The company is also undertaking a major initiative to \"establish itself as a health destination.\" While Dollar General didn't provide many details on exactly what its plans are, moving more into healthcare sounds like a smart move to me.</p>\n<h3>Viatris</h3>\n<p>There are at least two reasons why a given stock might hold up well during a big market sell-off. One is that its underlying business isn't impacted much by the reason behind the broader plunge. Another is that the stock is so cheap that investors scoop up shares if it falls much below its existing price. My take is that&nbsp;<b>Viatris</b> (NASDAQ:VTRS) qualifies on both of these criteria.</p>\n<p>Viatris specializes in biosimilars and generic drugs. Patients need these drugs, regardless of what the stock market does. The drugs are also less expensive than branded prescription drugs.</p>\n<p>The stock is irrefutably dirt cheap. Viatris' shares trade at a little over four times expected earnings. It's unlikely that the stock is going to move much lower because it would simply be too much of a steal for investors to ignore.</p>\n<p>Granted, Viatris probably won't keep up with the overall stock market's performance if the current uptrend continues. However, the company's dividend is attractive. Space exploration and electric vehicles both focus on a future that isn’t quite here yet, promising massive opportunities as new technologies evolve into viable companies.</p><p>But while stocks tied to the EV revolution soared this year, space-focused names -- after some initial euphoria -- badly trailed the broad market. High-profile tourist flights by Richard Branson’s publicly traded Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc., and by Jeff Bezos’s privately held Blue Origin and Musk’s SpaceX, weren’t enough to overcome doubts about whether this is a real business or just a divertissement for billionaires.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6016014c69a52502ab88d7ca1d3bb8db\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>“From commercial space launches related to satellites and space tourism, or even more futuristic things like asteroid mining -- a lot of it is a completely unproven industry, and it is not clear how much demand there is,” said Jay Jacobs, head of research and strategy at Global X Management Co. What’s more, there aren’t many pure-play public companies apart from Virgin Galactic, said Jacobs, whose firm manages exchange-traded funds but hasn’t started one for space.</p><p>This leaves the space sector without a clear front-runner or milestones that could help public investors judge progress. Excluding the energy sector, the growth rate is at -1.7%.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500&#39;s forward price-to-earnings ratio, a common metric for valuing stocks, is at 16.8 times earnings - far below the nearly 22 times forward P/E that stocks commanded at the start of the year.</p><p>Nine of the 11 major S&amp;P sectors fell, led by declines of 2.2% and 1.7%, respectively, in consumer discretionary and financial stocks.</p><p>Shares of megacap technology and growth companies such as Amazon.com Inc, Tesla Inc and Nvidia Corp fell between 1% and 5.3% as benchmark U.S. Treasury yields hit an 11-year high.</p><p>Rising yields weigh particularly on valuations of companies in the technology sector, which have high expected future earnings and form a significant part of the market-cap weighted indexes such as the S&amp;P 500.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 tech sector has slumped 28% so far this year, compared with a 21.2% decline in the benchmark index.</p><p>&#34;If we continue to have sticky inflation, and if (Fed Chair Jerome) Powell sticks to his guns as he indicates, I think we enter recession and we see significant drawdown on earnings expectations,&#34; said Mike Mullaney, director of global markets at Boston Partners.</p><p>&#34;If this happens, I have high conviction under those conditions that we break 3,636,&#34; he added, referring to the S&amp;P 500&#39;s mid-June low, its weakest point of the year.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 107.1 points, or 0.35%, to 30,076.68, the S&amp;P 500 lost 31.94 points, or 0.84%, to 3,757.99 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 153.39 points, or 1.37%, to 11,066.81.</p><p>Major U.S. airlines - which have enjoyed a rebound amid increased travel as pandemic restrictions end - were also down, with United Airlines and American Airlines falling 4.6% and 3.9% respectively. This took losses in the last three days to 11% for United and 10.6% for American.</p><p>JetBlue Airways Corp, off 7.1% and also recording a third straight loss, closed at its lowest level since March 2020.</p><p>Darden Restaurants Inc slid 4.4% after the Olive Garden parent reported downbeat first-quarter sales.</p><p>Volume on U.S. exchanges was 11.39 billion shares, compared with the 10.91 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 posted one new 52-week high and 123 new lows;
