October got off to an encouraging start, but it didn't take long for the markets to start selling off. Stocks still generally closed out the week higher. The "three stocks to avoid" in my column last week that I thought were going to lose to the market -- Apple, Conagra Brands, and Gold Fields -- rose 1.3%%, 0.7%, and 5.9%, respectively, averaging out to a 2.6% uptick. The S&P 500 experienced a 1.5% move lower, better than two of the three stocks but still short of the overall return. I was wrong. I have, though, been right in 32 of the past 51 weeks, or 63% of the time. Now let's look at the week ahead. I see Walgreens Boots Alliance, Blue Apron, and, again, Gold Fields as stocks you might want to consider steering clear of this week. Let's go over my near-term concerns with all three
Volatility is scarce in the crypto market, with Bitcoin hovering around $19,000, but extreme volatility is due today. Many investors are currently sidelined, as they eagerly anticipate the news of the Federal Reserve (U.S. Central Bank) decision on the next rate hike. They will clarify how much they will raise rates by.As mentioned previously, raising rates is negative for crypto because it means that it becomes more expensive to borrow because loan payments are larger and so it entices people to save more, which is what central banks want to clamp down on persistently high inflation. The market has priced in an 84% chance of a 75-basis point rate hike and a 16% chance of a 25-basis point rate hike. This means that the market is anticipating a 75-basis point rate hike.A 100-basis point rate
The Fed's forecast for rate hikes was more hawkish than expected.Even the usually implied volatility melt didn't help to lift stocks. The S&P 500 could probably fall to around 3,100.After several attempts to rein in the stock market, the Fed may have figured it out. The message was clear enough for a golden retriever(I have two) to understand. There was nothing cryptic or reading of the tea leaves to understand it.Powell struck the point again, reiterating his stance at Jackson Hole about his commitment to reining in inflation, which would create below-trend growth rates and higher unemployment. What solidified this commentary was the FOMC summary of economic projections, which laid it all out very nicely. There was nothing the equity market could cling to that it could twist and turn to
Despite the bloodbath in the last trading session of the US market, our local bourse appears to be more resilient, as I've originally hoped to find Great Singapore Sale today.I feel that the market tumble last night is a knee-jerk reaction to the latest August inflation data newly released that fell short of market expectations, and the futures of the major market indices appear to set the stage for a mild rebound tonight.I had bought some đ last night and plan to continue to load up my shopping cart if there were to be more cheap sale going on.âBull markets are born on pessimism, grown on skepticism, mature on optimism, and die on euphoria,â John Templeton, one of the worldâs most successful mutual-fund managers, had said. âThe time of maximum pessimism is the best time to buy, and the ti
The Twitter (TWTR)vs. Elon Musk saga has taken another turn. Whistleblower Peiter âMudgeâ Zatko, Twitterâs former head of security and a renowned hacker, has painted a dire picture of the inner workings at the microblogging platform, claiming there are serious privacy and security issues which could not only put users at risk but also pose a danger to national security.More closely correlated to the Twitter vs. Musk case, Zatko has alleged that the company has no idea how many spam and fake bot accounts are actually on its platform. This is like manna from heaven for Musk, whose reneging on the $44 billion deal to buy Twitter is based on the claim there are far more spam accounts on the platform than the company will admit. Following the allegations, both Muskâs and Twitterâs legal teams ha

Investors should brace for more volatility with policy makers expected to deliver another jumbo rate hikeFed Chair Jerome Powell says bringing down inflation will cause pain for households and businesses. The Federal Reserve isnât trying to slam the stock market as it rapidly raises interest rates in its bid to slow inflation still running red hot â but investors need to be prepared for more pain and volatility because policy makers arenât going to be cowed by a deepening selloff, investors and strategists said.âI donât think theyâre necessarily trying to drive inflation down by destroying stock prices or bond prices, but it is having that effect.â said Tim Courtney, chief investment officer at Exencial Wealth Advisors, in an interview.U.S. stocks fell sharply in the past week after hopes f

Who doesn't love a great growth stock? Consider what a $10,000 investment made in Tesla 10 years ago would be worth today: a cool $1.62 million. It's this potential for explosive returns that leads many to include growth stocks in a balanced portfolio. U.S. stocks ended sharply lower on Wednesday, as comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell shattered initial optimism over a Fed policy statement that raised interest rates by 75 basis points but signaled that smaller rate hikes may be on the horizon. In a volatile trading session, equities initially moved higher in the wake of the hike by the Fed, the fourth straight increase from the central bank of that magnitude as it attempts to bring down stubbornly high inflation. The target federal funds rate was set in a range between 3.75% and 4.00%, but the impact of the hike was initially tempered by new language that suggested the central bank was mindful of the effect its outsized rate hikes have had on the economy. Investors had been widely anticipating a 75-basis point rate hike, while hoping t

The stock market has not been kind to investors this year. The S&P 500 had its worst first half since 1970, and the Nasdaq Composite is currently 28% off its high. But the market has recovered from worse in the past, and there is no reason to believe this situation is any different. Eventually, the next bull market will erase those losses. In the meantime, many beaten-down stocks are brimming with potential, and that creates a buying opportunity for patient investors. For instance, Roku and MercadoLibre could both grow sixfold over the next decade, meaning shareholders could see a 500% return by 2032.Here's why.Roku: The top streaming platform in North AmericaStreaming pioneer Roku struggled in the second quarter as the macroeconomic environment continued to deteriorate. . Invesco QQQ ETFWith the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF as the core holding to anchor a portfolio, the Invesco QQQ fits nicely alongside it to generate long-term growth. This is one of the largest and most popular ETFs in the world, which stems from its excellent performance over the years.Unlike the broadly diversified Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF, the Invesco QQQ is focused on the Nasdaq 100, which includes the 100 largest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange. So roughly half of the stocks are from the information technology (IT) sector and about two-thirds are from IT and communication services. Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon are the top three holdings, but they represent much more of the portfolio than in the Vanguard ETF, as the top 10 holdings account for 52% of th
Google's Q3 2022 was a double-miss on both the top- and bottom-lines. Yet, its core underlying business in advertising and cloud-computing remains strong. FX was the biggest drag on Google's results, which was further corroborated by double-digit constant currency growth observed across its core segments, as previously expected. We believe Google's Q3 2022 results demonstrate resilience, making the stock's latest knee-jerk pullback on the double-miss a compelling entry opportunity. No company is immune to looming macroeconomic headwinds, yet Alphabet Inc.âs (NASDAQ: GOOG, NASDAQ: GOOGL) ("Google")Q3 2022 results have proven that it continues to be more resilient than most â especially its ad-focused peers that continue to reel from the double-whammy of macro-driven ad spending weakness and
Investors look to Powell speech for interest rate clues U.S. consumer confidence slips in November S&P 500 -0.16%, Nasdaq -0.59%, Dow +0.01% Nov 29 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 ended down on Tuesday, with losses in Apple and Amazon ahead of an upcoming speech by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell that could provide hints about magnitude of future interest rate hikes. Apple's stock dropped 2.1%, down for a fourth straight session. Powell is due to speak at a Brookings Institution event on Wednesday about the outlook for the U.S. economy and the labor market. Investors will be looking for clues about when the Fed will slow the pace of its aggressive interest rate hikes. "No one is willing to buy ahead of tomorrow with Powell speaking. Large swings for big technology stocks have been common this year during a head-spinning stretch that has dragged the group down. Some of the biggest one-day changes in market value in history have happened in 2022 after big tech companiesâ earnings. In February, a big drop in Amazon.comâs shares shaved $191 billion from its market value, the most everfor a company in a single day. Options traders appear to be betting the volatility will continue over the this week, when several big tech companies report their earnings results. (Their forecasts donât indicate the direction of the move, only the size.) Options traders are wagering on around a 5.4% move in Apple shares after its earnings this week, above the average move of around 3.3% after the past eight earnings releases, according to Cboe
Investors are plowing record amounts of cash into risky funds that turbocharge investment bets during a market rout thatis roiling stocks and bonds. Nearly $25 billion has flowed into leveraged and inverse exchange-traded funds this year, according to Morningstar Direct. This is already above 2008âs record haul of $17 billion. Inverse and leveraged ETFs are complex vehicles typically meant for short-term trades. Inverse funds seek to provide the opposite movement of an underlying index, asset or derivative. Some, for example, move inversely to the Nasdaq-100 index, allowing investors to wager the technology benchmark will lose ground. Inverse funds also often use leverage, or borrowed money, as do leveraged funds. This can magnify an investmentâs return, although leverage can also amplify
Stitch FixOffering stylist-curated outfits by mail hasn't been a very good business model lately. Stitch Fix has posted four consecutive quarters of sharply decelerating revenue growth, clocking in with a decline in revenue in its latest report. This is horrible momentum heading into the fiscal fourth-quarter numbers that it will announce on Tuesday afternoon. If the business was slowing as we clawed our way out of the pandemic, how do you think Stitch Fix will hold up now that folks are spending less money outside of food essentials? The model has gone through some changes, but it can't seem to gain traction with poorly dressed folks who would appreciate having fashionistas on their side. The balance sheet is still in decent shape, but analysts don't see Stitch Fix turning a profit until at
