Phoenix Suns star Chris Paul turns into a basketball for State Farm, cave men hawk Geico, and Progressive's (PGR) long-running character Flo does absolutely nothing.</p>\n<p>The sector's unlikely penchant for jokes owes in large part to the Aflac (AFL) duck, which made its debut more than 21 years ago and almost immediately transformed the fortunes of the company. But the ad campaign almost never happened.</p>\n<p>Aflac CEO Dan Amos tells Yahoo Finance in a recent interview that he was \"very reluctant\" to go forward with the ad because it risked making light of the company's name. But the ad made Aflac a household name, exploded sales, and was soon released by the company's Japan operation to similar effect, he said.</p>\n<p>\"The advertising agency that we had was sitting on a park bench in New York City, and heard the ducks quacking, and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of them said, 'That is what we need to go for,'\" Amos said. \"I said that I would never do it — at that time you didn't have the Geico ads, you didn't have all of the other ads.\".</p>\n<p>\"We took a big chance making fun of our name, because you're not just doing it, you're actually making fun of your name,\"he says. \"And yet, it forever changed our life and doubled our business in three years in the U.S.\"</p>\n<p>The duck even got the job over actor Ray Romano, then a major TV star on \"Everybody Loves Raymond,\" who taped a test commercial with Aflac.</p>\n<p>\"It tested an 18 — 50% better than anything we had ever tested,\" Amos says. \"The Aflac Duck tested a 27. Three, almost two and a half times better. So which one do you go with?\"</p>\n<p>While Geico's gecko may not have been on screens when Aflac designed its duck, the gecko was the first to be released into the wilderness. It made its television debut in 1999, and the Aflac duck followed soon after on Jan. 1, 2000.</p>\n<p>\"It was Y2K and we thought we were gonna have all these problems,\" he adds. \"So we had all these ads that we had booked on CNN, and other places to be ready for it.\"</p>\n<p>\"Well, then when there were no problems, [and] they didn't have anything to talk about with the news. So our commercials ran over and over and over again. And overnight, we realized that we had a hit. We actually had more hits on the internet the first week than we had the entire year before,\" he says.</p>\n<p>Over the next 14 years, Aflac's brand recognition leapt from 11% to 94%, making it one of the most well-known companies in the world, Aflac says. From January 2001 to January 2014, Aflac's stock rose 85%, far-outpacing the S&P 500 (^GSPC), which rose 35% over that same period.</p>\n<p>Initially, the voice behind the duck was longtime comedian Gilbert Gottfried. But the company fired Gottfried in 2011, after he tweeted a series of insensitive jokes about a tsunami that struck Japan, where Aflac operates a significant portion of its business. Phoenix Suns star Chris Paul turns into a basketball for State Farm, cave men hawk Geico, and Progressive's (PGR) long-running character Flo does absolutely nothing.\nThe sector's unlikely penchant for jokes owes in large part to the Aflac (AFL) duck, which made its debut more than 21 years ago and almost immediately transformed the fortunes of the company. But the ad campaign almost never happened.\nAflac CEO Dan Amos tells Yahoo Finance in a recent interview that he was \"very reluctant\" to go forward with the ad because it risked making light of the company's name. But the ad made Aflac a household name, exploded sales, and was soon released by the company's Japan operation to similar effect, he said.\n\"The advertising agency that we had was sitting on a park bench in New York City, and heard the ducks quacking, and one of them said, 'That is what we need to go for,'\" Amos said. \"I said that I would never do it — at that time you didn't have the Geico ads, you didn't have all of the other ads.\".\n\"We took a big chance making fun of our name, because you're not just doing it, you're actually making fun of your name,\"he says. \"And yet, it forever changed our life and doubled our business in three years in the U.S.\"\nThe duck even got the job over actor Ray Romano, then a major TV star on \"Everybody Loves Raymond,\" who taped a test commercial with Aflac.\n\"It tested an 18 — 50% better than anything we had ever tested,\" Amos says. \"The Aflac Duck tested a 27. Three, almost two and a half times better. So which one do you go with?\"\nWhile Geico's gecko may not have been on screens when Aflac designed its duck, the gecko was the first to be released into the wilderness. It made its television debut in 1999, and the Aflac duck followed soon after on Jan. 1, 2000.\n\"It was Y2K and we thought we were gonna have all these problems,\" he adds. \"So we had all these ads that we had booked on CNN, and other places to be ready for it.\"\n\"Well, then when there were no problems, [and] they didn't have anything to talk about with the news. So our commercials ran over and over and over again. And overnight, we realized that we had a hit. We actually had more hits on the internet the first week than we had the entire year before,\" he says.\nOver the next 14 years, Aflac's brand recognition leapt from 11% to 94%, making it one of the most well-known companies in the world, Aflac says. From January 2001 to January 2014, Aflac's stock rose 85%, far-outpacing the S&P 500 (^GSPC), which rose 35% over that same period.\nInitially, the voice behind the duck was longtime comedian Gilbert Gottfried. After a pair of recent acquisitions and a toothsome first-quarter earnings report, investors rewarded the company with a 20% share price increase in May.</p>\n<p>An investor conference began on June 16, allowing investors to get a better look at the company's recent background and get clues as to where it might be going. Here are three points you may want to consider while deciding if Tattooed Chef is the next <b>Beyond Meat</b> (NASDAQ:BYND) or if its weaknesses will limit its growth.</p>\n<h2>1. Tattooed Chef's operations are thriving</h2>\n<p>Despite the company having a traditional advertising budget of zero, Tattooed Chef's sales are booming, with overall revenue jumping 59% year over year from $33.2 million in Q1 2020 to $52.7 million in Q1 2021. An even more favorable sign for customer loyalty and brand recognition was the 105% year-over-year surge in products specifically branded with the Tattooed Chef name (the company also produces store-brand food products for various retailers). The company is projecting between $235 million and $242 million in total revenue for 2021 and a minimum of $300 million in the coming year.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d9b21e26263590dd121318b21e10d79a\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"464\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>The plant-based food maker is also achieving notable growth in the extent of its distribution network. According to company data, the number of stores carrying its products soared 41% between Dec. 31, 2020, and March 31, 2021, rising from 4,300 to 6,065. Points of distribution jumped to 31,000 from 23,000, an increase of nearly 35%.</p>\n<p>During the Q1 earnings conference call, CEO Salvatore Galletti said that by Q2's end on June 30, \"We expect to be an additional 1,162 stores with 8,000 new points of distribution, including a number of larger grocery chains.\" He added, \"We are confident we can achieve our 2021 objective of 10,000 stores and 65,000 points of distribution for Tattooed Chef by year end.\"</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> early May acquisitions by Tattooed Chef, costing the company a total of $35 million, could be a catalyst for stronger growth and expanded production, too. Tattooed snapped up Karsten Tortilla Factory and New Mexico Food Distributors. According to Galletti, it \"will be immediately addressing the $1 billion Frozen Mexican Food category once the transactions close,\" and will use the new acquisitions as a stepping stone into the $20 billion market for \"Hispanic/Southwest\" food.</p>\n<p>With Abasto reporting around two-thirds of Americans (233 million) using at least some Mexican foods or recipes according to Statista research, and growth in this type of dining expected to continue, Tattooed Chef's move helps it establish a new position in a strong market sector. The purchase also adds 118,000 square feet of production facilities to its total, helping prevent a processing bottleneck during this period of rapid sales growth. Galletti remarks the two acquisitions are projected to \"contribute up to $200 million annually in revenue in the next two to three years and create significant value.\"</p>\n<p>The company is also expanding from a focus on frozen and refrigerated foods to shelf-stable foods (which it refers to with the buzzword phrase \"ambient foods\" in company literature). With sales of major shelf-stable food categories such as vegetables and soups having grown anywhere from 28% to 31.3% in 2020 according to market research firm IRI, this could be another potential sales driver.</p>\n<h2>2. It's not all sunshine for the company</h2>\n<p>Despite its skyrocketing sales and its relative freedom from the expense of a significant advertising budget, Tattooed Chef still registered a net loss in Q1 2021. The company's bottom line has worsened year over year: It produced positive $5.9 million net income in Q1 2020 versus a $7.9 million net loss in the same period this year. It has seen a rise in operating expenses, including a few million directed towards marketing and several million directed towards stock compensation.</p>\n<p>While Tattooed Chef makes plant-based cauliflower burgers, it simply doesn't have the serious research and development (R&D) muscle of Beyond Meat or privately held Impossible Foods to produce meat substitutes at the same level. While Beyond and Impossible maintain laboratories and fund teams of scientists to develop plant protein faux meat closely mimicking the flavor, texture, cooking characteristics, nutrition, and even bleeding of actual meat and are working on similarly advanced plant-based milk and eggs, Tattooed Chef's cauliflower burgers are just spiced and breaded cauliflower patties, a far more casual approach.</p>\n<p>Given that Beyond and Impossible owe their success to the accurate simulation of meat in a plant-based format, Tattooed Chef seems unlikely to tap strongly into that growth market. Its acai bowls, smoothie bowls, and other products, while proving salable, don't have the cutting-edge sales leverage of the advanced faux meats offered by its competitors and might be readily substituted with other companies' frozen meal bowls. Tattooed Chef, at this point, appears to lack the powerful, clear-cut product differentiation at the heart of the success of manufacturers like Beyond Meat.</p>\n<h2>3. The high short interest in Tattooed Chef is a wild card</h2>\n<p>One factor with potentially unpredictable consequences for Tattooed Chef is high short interest, standing at slightly over 36% at the start of June. Under ordinary market conditions, this would be a negative, indicating a large cohort of short-sellers have done their due diligence and found the company's fundamentals to be significantly lacking. A few years ago, this beefy short interest would have been a definitive warning sign about the company's future.</p>\n<p>In today's stock market climate, however, the high short interest could potentially attract the attention of large numbers of retail investors, such as those from the millions-strong r/WallStreetBets Reddit community. Noted for their tremendous short squeeze on the stock of video game seller <b>GameStop</b> and a growing handful of other \"meme stocks,\" these Redditors and other small investors remain on the lookout for heavily shorted stocks to buy in quantity.</p>\n<p>While Tattooed Chef seems to have drawn relatively little notice from these investors up until now, the quest for the next short squeeze takedown could eventually see the company become a meme stock, too. In this case, an attempted squeeze by WallStreetBets readers could pump immense streams of cash into Tattooed Chef, giving the company ample liquidity to aggressively pursue expansion, boost production capacity, and increase the range of product development.</p>\n<h2>Should you add a taste of Tattooed Chef to your portfolio?</h2>\n<p>While Tattooed Chef isn't making the groundbreaking plant-based meat or dairy products of Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods, it appears to have some real potential to become a profitable midsize vegetarian and vegan meal company. After a pair of recent acquisitions and a toothsome first-quarter earnings report, investors rewarded the company with a 20% share price increase in May.\nAn investor conference began on June 16, allowing investors to get a better look at the company's recent background and get clues as to where it might be going. Here are three points you may want to consider while deciding if Tattooed Chef is the next Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND) or if its weaknesses will limit its growth.\n1. Tattooed Chef's operations are thriving\nDespite the company having a traditional advertising budget of zero, Tattooed Chef's sales are booming, with overall revenue jumping 59% year over year from $33.2 million in Q1 2020 to $52.7 million in Q1 2021. An even more favorable sign for customer loyalty and brand recognition was the 105% year-over-year surge in products specifically branded with the Tattooed Chef name (the company also produces store-brand food products for various retailers). According to company data, the number of stores carrying its products soared 41% between Dec. 31, 2020, and March 31, 2021, rising from 4,300 to 6,065. Points of distribution jumped to 31,000 from 23,000, an increase of nearly 35%.\nDuring the Q1 earnings conference call, CEO Salvatore Galletti said that by Q2's end on June 30, \"We expect to be an additional 1,162 stores with 8,000 new points of distribution, including a number of larger grocery chains.\" He added, \"We are confident we can achieve our 2021 objective of 10,000 stores and 65,000 points of distribution for Tattooed Chef by year end.\"\nTwo early May acquisitions by Tattooed Chef, costing the company a total of $35 million, could be a catalyst for stronger growth and expanded production, too. Tattooed snapped up Karsten Tortilla Factory and New Mexico Food Distributors. According to Galletti, it \"will be immediately addressing the $1 billion Frozen Mexican Food category once the transactions close,\" and will use the new acquisitions as a stepping stone into the $20 billion market for \"Hispanic/Southwest\" food.\nWith Abasto reporting around two-thirds of Americans (233 million) using at least some Mexican foods or recipes according to Statista research, and growth in this type of dining expected to continue, Tattooed Chef's move helps it establish a new position in a strong market sector. The purchase also adds 118,000 square feet of production facilities to its total, helping prevent a processing bottleneck during this period of rapid sales growth. Galletti remarks the two acquisitions are projected to \"contribute up to $200 million annually in revenue in the next two to three years and create significant value.\"\nThe company is also expanding from a focus on frozen and refrigerated foods to shelf-stable foods (which it refers to with the buzzword phrase \"ambient foods\" in company literature). With sales of major shelf-stable food categories such as vegetables and soups having grown anywhere from 28% to 31.3% in 2020 according to market research firm IRI, this could be another potential sales driver.\n2. It's not all sunshine for the company\nDespite its skyrocketing sales and its relative freedom from the expense of a significant advertising budget, Tattooed Chef still registered a net loss in Q1 2021. The company's bottom line has worsened year over year: It produced positive $5.9 million net income in Q1 2020 versus a $7.9 million net loss in the same period this year. It has seen a rise in operating expenses, including a few million directed towards marketing and several million directed towards stock compensation.\nWhile Tattooed Chef makes plant-based cauliflower burgers, it simply doesn't have the serious research and development (R&D) muscle of Beyond Meat or privately held Impossible Foods to produce meat substitutes at the same level. While Beyond and Impossible maintain laboratories and fund teams of scientists to develop plant protein faux meat closely mimicking the flavor, texture, cooking characteristics, nutrition, and even bleeding of actual meat and are working on similarly advanced plant-based milk and eggs, Tattooed Chef's cauliflower burgers are just spiced and breaded cauliflower patties, a far more casual approach.\nGiven that Beyond and Impossible owe their success to the accurate simulation of meat in a plant-based format, Tattooed Chef seems unlikely to tap strongly into that growth market. Its acai bowls, smoothie bowls, and other products, while proving salable, don't have the cutting-edge sales leverage of the advanced faux meats offered by its competitors and might be readily substituted with other companies' frozen meal bowls. Tattooed Chef, at this point, appears to lack the powerful, clear-cut product differentiation at the heart of the success of manufacturers like Beyond Meat.\n3. The high short interest in Tattooed Chef is a wild card\nOne factor with potentially unpredictable consequences for Tattooed Chef is high short interest, standing at slightly over 36% at the start of June. Under ordinary market conditions, this would be a negative, indicating a large cohort of short-sellers have done their due diligence and found the company's fundamentals to be significantly lacking. A few years ago, this beefy short interest would have been a definitive warning sign about the company's future.\nIn today's stock market climate, however, the high short interest could potentially attract the attention of large numbers of retail investors, such as those from the millions-strong r/WallStreetBets Reddit community. Michelle Wine Estates business to private equity firm Sycamore Partners Management for $1.2 billion as the tobacco giant looks to focus its business on cigarette alternatives for smokers.</p>\n<p>As the popularity of cigarettes fall in the United States, especially among youngsters, Altria has been developing its line of dipping tobacco, nicotine pouches and other smokeless oral tobacco products.</p>\n<p>However, Altria has taken a heavy it from its $12.8 billion investment in e-cigarette maker Juul Labs, as an increase in regulatory scrutiny caused the value of the company to nosedive.</p>\n<p>Ste. In a dramatic shift from a year ago, customers rushing to secure supply are left with far less haggling power, leading to ever-higher fees.</p>\n<p>Buyers in Japan agreed to pay a premium of $185 per ton above benchmark London prices for the coming quarter, the highest in six years, according to five people familiar with the matter. That’s more than double the level seen a year earlier, when demand suffered due to the global coronavirus outbreak.</p>\n<p>Further, in a sign of how clearly the sellers have gained the upper hand, the negotiations involved a rare notice from a producer saying that if its initial offer wasn’t agreed to, the price would be raised, according to three of the people who asked not to be identified because talks are private. Typically, producers present their highest prices at the start of talks and gradually lower their offer as they seek deals.</p>\n<p>“Japanese buyers seem to have had to accept the higher premium to secure enough supply, because otherwise ingot would be diverted to other countries,” said Takeshi Irisawa, an analyst at Tachibana Securities Co.</p>\n<p>What happens in Japan matters. The nation is Asia’s biggest aluminum importer, and the premium for shipments it reaches each quarter over the London Metal Exchange price sets the benchmark for the region. The higher costs can be passed along several months later to users such as automakers, Irisawa said.</p>\n<p>The changing tone of negotiations comes amid a commodities boom that has lifted prices of everything from coal to glass and steel rebar to record highs. Alcoa Corp.’s chief executive officer said last month demand for aluminum is “firing on all engines” this year and continues to grow “really, really quickly” in China and the rest of the world.</p>\n<p>One reason behind the hike in Japan was high levels of overseas spot premiums, said <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the people, as rates in North America and Europe have climbed to multi-year highs on strong demand. Another person said it’s getting harder to take on additional orders, although tightened supply hasn’t yet caused a major disruption to aluminum products.</p>\n<p>Japan’s shipments of aluminum rolled products gained 12% in April, the third straight month of year-on-year gains, aided by a recovery in the autos market, an industry group said last month. Demand from the construction industry has been recovering and capital spending on railroad cars has also restarted after being stalled due to the pandemic, said another person familiar with the matter.</p>\n<p>The negotiations in Japan are in stark contrast to those a year earlier, which took longer to reach an agreement. Demand for the metal dried up during the pandemic, with buyers agreeing to pay the lowest fee in more than three years.</p>\n<p>With economies on the rebound, particularly in China, premiums on aluminum shipments have quickly recovered, notching double-digit percentage increases in four consecutive quarters. In a dramatic shift from a year ago, customers rushing to secure supply are left with far less haggling power, leading to ever-higher fees.\nBuyers in Japan agreed to pay a premium of $185 per ton above benchmark London prices for the coming quarter, the highest in six years, according to five people familiar with the matter. That’s more than double the level seen a year earlier, when demand suffered due to the global coronavirus outbreak.\nFurther, in a sign of how clearly the sellers have gained the upper hand, the negotiations involved a rare notice from a producer saying that if its initial offer wasn’t agreed to, the price would be raised, according to three of the people who asked not to be identified because talks are private. Typically, producers present their highest prices at the start of talks and gradually lower their offer as they seek deals.\n“Japanese buyers seem to have had to accept the higher premium to secure enough supply, because otherwise ingot would be diverted to other countries,” said Takeshi Irisawa, an analyst at Tachibana Securities Co.\nWhat happens in Japan matters. Information is derived from sensors placed in areas such as manufacturing floors and retail stores, which are used to monitor everything from inventory levels to stock capacity. Then, the information is transferred to a data lake for analysis.</p>\n<p>The company was founded in 2014 by LinkedIn engineers Jay Kreps, Jun Rao and Neha Narkhede, who created Apache Kafka, the open source ‘distributed storage system’ on which Confluent is based. With a $500,000 backing from LinkedIn, the trio rolled out the software platform for early use cases at the professional network, handling data streams with billions of messages.</p>\n<p>However, the ambition was bigger, and the same year the founders secured a $6.9 million round of funding led by venture capital firm Benchmark. The company quickly secured the custom of a range of tech luminaries, from Twitter to Netflix to Uber, which used the service for such functions as real-time analytics and fraud prevention.</p>\n<p>Confluent would go on to raise a further four rounds to the present day, totalling some $456 billion, according to Crunchbase.</p>\n<p>As of most recent 2020 figures, the company’s revenues are in excess of $300 million, with revenue in the first quarter of 2021 jumping 51% from the year previous.
