The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq ended Monday at fresh record highs as investors jumped into technology stocks, taking comfort from the Federal Reserve's dovish comments on tapering in monetary stimulus and what that might mean for the economic recovery.</p>\n<p>Apple Inc jumped to an all-time high, while Microsoft Corp , Amazon.com , Google-owner Alphabet Inc all rose, helping the tech-heavy Nasdaq outperform the S&amp;P 500 and the Dow.</p>\n<p>High-growth tech stocks tend to benefit from expectations of lower rates because their value rests heavily on future earnings.</p>\n<p>The benchmark index is tracking its longest monthly winning streak since 2018 on the promise of easy money, with investors shrugging off signs of a slowing economic recovery and surging COVID-19 cases.</p>\n<p>Fed Chair Jerome Powell said on Friday the central bank would continue to be cautious in its approach to tapering its massive pandemic-era stimulus, while reaffirming a steady economic recovery.</p>\n<p>\"It's now clear that there's going to still be an extraordinary amount of support for this economy, probably until November,\" said Ed Moya, senior market analyst for the Americas at OANDA.</p>\n<p>\"Some investors are thinking that tapering might not even start this year, but the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> thing that everyone can agree on is that Chair Powell has signaled they are in no rush to raise interest rates and he's disconnected tapering with rate-hike timing.\"</p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 has risen more than 3% so far in August - a seasonally weak period for stocks - and Wells Fargo analysts said last week they expect the index to rise another 8% by the end of the year.</p>\n<p>It is also on track to log one of its best year-to-date returns through August of the past six decades, said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading at E*Trade Financial.</p>\n<p>Unofficially, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 55.96 points, or 0.16%, to 35,399.84, the S&amp;P 500 gained 19.39 points, or 0.43%, to 4,528.76 and the Nasdaq Composite&nbsp;added 136.22 points, or 0.9%, to 15,265.72.</p>\n<p>While U.S. crude prices rose 0.7% on Monday, energy stocks&nbsp;broadly slipped as investors fretted about possible longer-term impacts to offshore oil production and damage to energy infrastructure from Hurricane Ida, which roared ashore on Sunday near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, a major hub for the U.S. offshore oil industry.</p>\n<p>Falling bond yields also pressured bank stocks, with the S&amp;P 500 banking index ending down.</p>\n<p>PayPal Holdings Inc advanced on a CNBC report that the financial services firm was exploring the development of a stocks trading platform for its U.S. customers. Read on to see why our contributors think that these Buffett-backed, income-generating stocks have what it takes to be standouts in your portfolio.</p>\n<h2><b>Verizon is a dividend juggernaut</b></h2>\n<p><b>Jamal Carnette</b> <b>(Verizon):</b> Who says Warren Buffett isn't a tech investor? After eschewing the sector for years, Buffett has now invested billions in technology companies, including owning 3.8% of Verizon Communications. At current prices, Berskhire's position is worth nearly $9 billion.</p>\n<p>Verizon's dividend has historically been underappreciated. Despite its having a juicy 4.5% yield, many income investors favored the larger 7% payout provided by its telecom competitor <b>AT&amp;T</b>. However, that's about to change.</p>\n<p>Earlier this year, AT&amp;T announced it was spinning off its WarnerMedia division and merging it with <b>Discovery </b>with the split occurring next year. As a result, the company was cutting its dividend. While this move might unlock value for AT&amp;T, it also makes Verizon relatively more attractive for income investors in the telecom space.</p>\n<p>Buffett is a value investor, and Verizon certainly fits the bill. The company currently trades at 10.5 times forward earnings versus 22.3 times for the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>. Verizon's yield of 4.5% is three times the yield of the greater index, and investors are expecting another increase announcement in September, continuing the streak of raises that has occurred every year since 2006.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, Verizon stock has risks. Top-line growth has been difficult to come by, and revenue in 2020 was lower than it was in 2015. The company has significant exposure to landline telephone and cable television businesses, and a significant debt overhang, most of which comes from the $49 billion issuance it undertook to buy out <b>Vodafone</b>'s&nbsp;45% stake of Verizon Wireless in 2014.</p>\n<p>Despite that, Verizon's dividend is safe. Last year, the company generated more than $20 billion in free cash flow, more than double dividend payouts. Verizon's predictable, subscription-based businesses will ensure investors can look forward to dividends (and increases) for years to come. Warren Buffett and Berkshire know a strong company when they see <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>.</p>\n<h2>Don't let this payment giant's low yield -- or huge size -- keep you away</h2>\n<p><b>Jason Hall</b> <b>(Mastercard):</b> With a dividend yield south of 0.5% at recent prices, investors looking for yield often overlook Mastercard. Ironically, growth investors might <i>also</i> eschew the company, assuming that with a market cap above $351 billion, its growth days are over.</p>\n<p>I think investors in <i>either</i> camp are making a mistake to skip Mastercard. Simply put, this stalwart's scale and brand power have it lined up to ride a massive wave of digital-payments growth around the world in the decades ahead.</p>\n<p>Mastercard has a massive economic moat in its trusted, well-known payments network that gives it a massive network effect advantage. Having a relationship -- whether as a cardholder, accepting merchant, or a bank that issues Mastercard -- gives you access to the other two. And the more of each that is a Mastercard partner, the more of the others that want access. That's a killer advantage.</p>\n<p>This economic moat is why Mastercard's stock has consistently outperformed the S&amp;P 500 on just about every three-, five-, and 10-year period since going public, and is likely to continue outperforming. It's also likely the reason why Mastercard is in the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio.</p>\n<p>One last thing: The yield may be low, but the dividend&nbsp;<i>growth&nbsp;</i>is incredible. Here's how much it's increased since being implemented, juicing Mastercard's total returns an extra 570%:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e18eba4fc8baaec5791cb8d23115229e\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>MA data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>That's a&nbsp;<i>lot&nbsp;</i>of juice from a relatively low dividend yield, powered by incredible growth.</p>\n<h2><b>Investors can win with Berkshire's biggest stock holding&nbsp;</b></h2>\n<p><b>Keith Noonan (Apple): </b>The company has been on an incredible run. It's posted a total return of roughly 675% over the last decade, with gains spurred by strong sales for its hardware and impressive growth in the software and services space. In light of that gravity-defying performance, it's not unreasonable to wonder whether the tech giant still has room for big growth.</p>\n<p>Apple already has an eye-catching market capitalization of roughly $2.45 trillion, and it sits atop the list of the world's most valuable companies. While relative growth will be tougher to come by as the company continues to increase in size, Apple still has an unmatched position in the consumer electronics industry. Technology will only become increasingly important in the average person's daily life, and Apple is fantastically positioned to capitalize on some of the world's biggest emerging technology trends.</p>\n<p>The company's phones and tablets will play a huge role in ushering in the age of 5G networks, which will enable dramatically faster upload and download speeds that make new kinds of software applications possible. Apple is also likely to be a leader in the augmented reality (AR) space. Next-generation network technology will help pave the way for new AR hardware and software applications, and Apple's current leadership position in mobile and wearable computing suggests that the company is likely to be one of the biggest winners if augmented reality takes off.</p>\n<p>With the company's dividend yield coming in at roughly 0.6% despite years of strong payout growth, it might come as a surprise to hear that Apple's dividend posted a much greater yield at earlier dates. Consider that the stock yielded more than 2.6% for a stretch of time back in 2013. Apple has boosted its payout 132.5% since it began paying a dividend in 2012, but market-crushing capital appreciation has outpaced payout growth. Not to worry. Verizon's predictable, subscription-based businesses will ensure investors can look forward to dividends (and increases) for years to come. Warren Buffett and Berkshire know a strong company when they see one.\nDon't let this payment giant's low yield -- or huge size -- keep you away\nJason Hall (Mastercard): With a dividend yield south of 0.5% at recent prices, investors looking for yield often overlook Mastercard. Ironically, growth investors might also eschew the company, assuming that with a market cap above $351 billion, its growth days are over.\nI think investors in either camp are making a mistake to skip Mastercard. Simply put, this stalwart's scale and brand power have it lined up to ride a massive wave of digital-payments growth around the world in the decades ahead.\nMastercard has a massive economic moat in its trusted, well-known payments network that gives it a massive network effect advantage. If the company's fundamentals and prospects haven't changed, a lower price may actually be a good reason to buy more instead of selling.</p>\n<p>For another, if a company's stock price only <i>temporarily </i>falls below the threshold, a stop loss order can very easily turn a <i>temporary </i>drop in price into a <i>permanent </i>loss of capital. If that happens, you lose the ability to claim the loss you generated on your taxes until you sell \"for real.\" That adds a lot of complexity to your investment tracking and potentially removes a key real benefit that could come from taking a loss.</p>\n<h2>No. 2: Being forced by your broker to sell low</h2>\n<p>Sometimes, even more experienced investors can get lured into the siren song of margin and its potential to magnify returns when things are going well. The big problem with margin is that it is very much a double-edged sword. It magnifies the downside as well as the upside. On top of that, if the market moves too aggressively against you while you're using margin, your broker can force you to close out your investments.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, that often turns into yet another way in which short-term volatility can turn into a more permanent loss of capital. A year later it launched its first slate of original shows -- including&nbsp;<i>Orange is the New Blac</i>k,<i>House of Cards</i>, and&nbsp;<i>Hemlock Grove</i>-- to lock in its subscribers and reduce its dependence on licensed content.</p>\n<p>Netflix hit 50 million members in 2014, 100 million members in 2017, and 209.2 million members in its latest quarter. That massive audience makes it the world's largest paid video streaming platform.</p>\n<p>Between 2010 and 2020, Netflix's annual revenue rose from $2.16 billion to $25.0 billion. Its net income surged from $161 million to $2.76 billion.</p>\n<p><b>The challenges ahead...</b></p>\n<p>Netflix still enjoys a first-mover's advantage in premium streaming videos, but it currently faces a growing list of formidable competitors. The biggest threat is&nbsp;<b>Disney</b>(NYSE:DIS), which owns a massive portfolio of first-party content and offers its services at lower prices than Netflix.</p>\n<p>Disney+, the company's flagship platform, has already accumulated nearly 104 million subscribers since its launch in late 2019. By comparison, it took Netflix's streaming platform<i>ten years</i>to hit 100 million subscribers. This ongoing fragmentation of the streaming market could limit Netflix's pricing power, make it more difficult to gain new subscribers, and force it to spend even more money on expensive original shows and movies to retain its existing audience.</p>\n<p>Netflix has already been exploring new ways to differentiate its platform. It's licensing more anime content and expanding its children's programming, and it even launched an&nbsp;online store&nbsp;to sell tie-in merchandise. It's also planning to expand into&nbsp;video games&nbsp;by offering free mobile games to subscribers.</p>\n<p><b>The road to $1 trillion</b></p>\n<p>Netflix's stock has rallied about 1,200% over the past decade. But to cross the $1 trillion mark, it needs to more than quadruple in value.</p>\n<p>Analysts expect Netflix's revenue to rise 19% to $29.7 billion this year, then grow 15% to $34.2 billion next year. Netflix's growth will likely decelerate afterwards, for two simple reasons: It's saturating its developed markets like the U.S., and it faces too much competition around the world.</p>\n<p>But let's assume Netflix continues to roll out compelling original content, locks in more users with niche content like anime, and expands its digital ecosystem with video games and online merchandise.</p>\n<p>If Netflix's revenue growth meets analysts' expectations for the next two years and continues growing at an average rate of 10% from 2023 to 2030, it could generate $73.3 billion in annual revenue by the final year. If Netflix is still trading at about eight times sales, it would be worth nearly $600 billion.</p>\n<p>If Netflix grows it revenue at an average rate of 15% from 2023 to 2020, it would generate $104.6 billion in annual revenue by the final year. At eight times sales, it would still fall short of the $1 trillion mark.</p>\n<p>But Netflix's&nbsp;price-to-sales&nbsp;ratio will likely decline if investors think its high-growth days are over, which would result in much lower market caps. It also launched its service internationally.\nThat expansion boosted Netflix's audience to 25 million members by 2012. Netflix's growth will likely decelerate afterwards, for two simple reasons: It's saturating its developed markets like the U.S., and it faces too much competition around the world.\nBut let's assume Netflix continues to roll out compelling original content, locks in more users with niche content like anime, and expands its digital ecosystem with video games and online merchandise.\nIf Netflix's revenue growth meets analysts' expectations for the next two years and continues growing at an average rate of 10% from 2023 to 2030, it could generate $73.3 billion in annual revenue by the final year. If Netflix is still trading at about eight times sales, it would be worth nearly $600 billion.\nIf Netflix grows it revenue at an average rate of 15% from 2023 to 2020, it would generate $104.6 billion in annual revenue by the final year. At eight times sales, it would still fall short of the $1 trillion mark.\nBut Netflix's price-to-sales ratio will likely decline if investors think its high-growth days are over, which would result in much lower market caps. The stock opened at $64.50, and currently trades in the high $80s -- which gives it a market capitalization of nearly $50 billion. FY = fiscal year.</p>\n<h2>But is Roblox a fad or a new content platform?</h2>\n<p>However, there are some key differences between Roblox and Unity.</p>\n<p>Roblox is a platform that enables younger users, many of whom don't have any coding experience, to build simple block-based games and share them with other players. Unity is an advanced game development engine that powers over half of the world's mobile, PC, and console games.</p>\n<p>Roblox encourages users to monetize their games with an in-app currency called Robux within its walled garden. Unity offers developers more flexible tools for integrating in-app ads, in-app purchases, and other features into their games.</p>\n<p>The bulls claim Roblox's self-sustaining cycle of content creation, self-promotion, and monetization will fuel its long-term growth. The bears will point out that half of the platform's daily active users (DAUs) are under the age of 13, and they might eventually grow out of Roblox's simple experiences or graduate to a more advanced game development engine like Unity.</p>\n<p>The bulls will point to Roblox's growth rates. Between the first quarters of 2018 and 2021, Roblox's DAUs more than quadrupled from 10.3 million to 42.1 million, its total hours engaged surged from 2.1 billion to 9.7 billion, and its average bookings per DAU jumped from $11.62 to $15.48.</p>\n<p>Roblox's revenue rose 56% in 2019, soared 82% in 2020, and analysts expect 167% growth this year. But next year, they expect its revenue to rise just 26% after the pandemic ends and more students return to school.</p>\n<p>The bears will point out Roblox isn't profitable, and it probably can't achieve profitability without reducing its exchange rate between U.S. dollars and Robux for developers. However, doing so could alienate its developers and throttle the platform's output of new content.</p>\n<h2>Why Roblox probably can't hit $1 trillion by 2030</h2>\n<p>Even if Roblox maintains a premium price-to-sales ratio of 20 through 2030, it would need to generate $50 billion in annual sales to hit the $1 trillion mark. Roblox generated just $933 million in revenues in 2020, so it would need to generate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 50% to hit $50 billion by 2030.</p>\n<p>If Roblox's valuations cool off, as they'll likely do over the years, it will need to generate an ever higher CAGR to become a $1 trillion company. By comparison, Amazon grew its revenues at a CAGR of 27.4% over the past decade -- and it currently trades at just four times this year's sales. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely Roblox will become a $1 trillion company within the next decade.</p>\n<p>But that doesn't mean Roblox won't generate multibagger gains over the next decade. It could remain popular long after the pandemic passes, attract a new generation of younger users, and launch more powerful tools for advanced users. As it continues to expand, economies of scale should kick in and strengthen its earnings growth. FY = fiscal year.\nBut is Roblox a fad or a new content platform?\nHowever, there are some key differences between Roblox and Unity.\nRoblox is a platform that enables younger users, many of whom don't have any coding experience, to build simple block-based games and share them with other players. Unity is an advanced game development engine that powers over half of the world's mobile, PC, and console games.\nRoblox encourages users to monetize their games with an in-app currency called Robux within its walled garden. Unity offers developers more flexible tools for integrating in-app ads, in-app purchases, and other features into their games.\nThe bulls claim Roblox's self-sustaining cycle of content creation, self-promotion, and monetization will fuel its long-term growth. The bears will point out that half of the platform's daily active users (DAUs) are under the age of 13, and they might eventually grow out of Roblox's simple experiences or graduate to a more advanced game development engine like Unity.\nThe bulls will point to Roblox's growth rates. Between the first quarters of 2018 and 2021, Roblox's DAUs more than quadrupled from 10.3 million to 42.1 million, its total hours engaged surged from 2.1 billion to 9.7 billion, and its average bookings per DAU jumped from $11.62 to $15.48.\nRoblox's revenue rose 56% in 2019, soared 82% in 2020, and analysts expect 167% growth this year. But next year, they expect its revenue to rise just 26% after the pandemic ends and more students return to school.\nThe bears will point out Roblox isn't profitable, and it probably can't achieve profitability without reducing its exchange rate between U.S. dollars and Robux for developers. However, doing so could alienate its developers and throttle the platform's output of new content.\nWhy Roblox probably can't hit $1 trillion by 2030\nEven if Roblox maintains a premium price-to-sales ratio of 20 through 2030, it would need to generate $50 billion in annual sales to hit the $1 trillion mark. Roblox generated just $933 million in revenues in 2020, so it would need to generate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 50% to hit $50 billion by 2030.\nIf Roblox's valuations cool off, as they'll likely do over the years, it will need to generate an ever higher CAGR to become a $1 trillion company. By comparison, Amazon grew its revenues at a CAGR of 27.4% over the past decade -- and it currently trades at just four times this year's sales. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely Roblox will become a $1 trillion company within the next decade.\nBut that doesn't mean Roblox won't generate multibagger gains over the next decade. It could remain popular long after the pandemic passes, attract a new generation of younger users, and launch more powerful tools for advanced users. As it continues to expand, economies of scale should kick in and strengthen its earnings growth.
