metric will be more important for measuring the health of Facebook’s business in its second-quarter earnings results than the company’s advertising revenue.\nThat’s because this quarter will be the first for the social media company since Apple released a key iPhone software update in April. The update, known as iOS 14.5, allows iPhone and iPad users to limit companies from tracking their device’s activity. This makes it difficult for companies like Facebook to target users with personalized ads.\nNo company complained more about the impact of iOS 14.5 than Facebook, which warned that the change to the Apple software would impact small businesses’ ability to market to their customers. For a while now, Facebook has warned investors to brace for “ad targeting headwinds” related to Apple’s changes, as well as others in the internet landscape.\nThe social media giant is scheduled to release earnings Wednesday, July 28 after the bell.\nFacebook’s revenue for the second quarter, their guidance for the rest of the year and any commentary from the company’s executives during its earnings call will be telling. This quarter’s results could provide insight as to how many users opted to restrict Facebook’s tracking and whether the social media company has been able to navigate those restrictions.\n“The changes went into effect during the quarter, and we’re still seeing the rollout of the 14.5 update,” said Debra Aho Williamson, principal analyst at eMarketer. “I’m going to be very curious.”\nAlready, Facebook’s peers have navigated the challenge’s of iOS 14.5 with few setbacks. Snap, for example, was not affected by the Apple update as it had anticipated, telling analysts on its earnings call on Thursday that it had observed “higher opt-in rates than we are seeing reported generally across the industry.”Twitterechoed the sentiment, telling shareholders that the effect of Apple’s changes was lower than expected. Both companies did warn that the long-term impacts of iOS 14.5 remain to be seen, but so far, the early returns have been promising.\nHere are three Facebook storylines to follow when the company announces its second-quarter earnings:\n1. Facebook’s commerce business\nIn an effort to combat the restrictions of Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, Facebook has been ramping up its efforts to bring more commerce directly into its own apps.\nIt did this last year by introducing Facebook Shops and Instagram Shops, and more recently, the company announced plans to introduce more ways for creators to promote shoppable products through their Instagram accounts. Further,Facebook in June announced its plans to bring shops to WhatsApp, a messaging service.\nBy having users make purchases from advertisers directly on its own apps, Facebook is able to directly measure the effectiveness of its ads and provide those stats to advertisers.\nAlready, Facebook claims more than 300 million monthly Shops visitors and 1.2 million monthly active Shops across its apps. Any updates from Facebook regarding its commerce efforts will be worthwhile for investors.\n“While Q2 is not historically a big commerce quarter, social commerce is clearly coming into its own,” said Ron Josey, JMP Securities managing director.\n2. Covid’s impact on app usage\nInvestors will want to know whether the economic reopening and the expansion of Covid-19 vaccines have affected the amount of time users spend on Facebook and its various apps.\nA year ago when people worldwide were forced indoors, Facebook and other consumer apps saw their usage skyrocket as people sought to stay connected. Now, investors will want to know if that usage has taken a hit or will it continue growing.\n“Now that people are out and getting around, are they posting more or are they living in the real world? What are they doing?” said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer of Bokeh Capital.\nAdding a twist to this, however, is the growing spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus. As cases start to rise again in the U.S., investors will want to know what kind of effect, if any, the delta variant could have on Facebook usage.\n3. The regulatory outlook\nFacebook has been under the microscope of lawmakers and regulators worldwide since the company’s March 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which it was reported that a political consulting firm had improperly accessed the data of 87 million Facebook profiles in a bid to influence the 2016 presidential election.\nThis quarter included some major news regarding all of that regulatory pressure.\nMost notably,Facebook scored a major win in late June when a federal court dismissed an antitrust complaint from the Federal Trade Commission against the company as well as a parallel case brought by 48 state attorneys general. Those fights aren’t quite over just yet, but they certainly relieved some of Facebook’s headaches.\nFurther, the company came under more scrutiny in July when the Biden administration scolded the social media company for not doing enough to combat misinformation on its services that discourage people from taking Covid-19 vaccines. At one point, President Joe Biden said “they’re killing people” in regards to the misinformation on Facebook.\nHearing directly from Facebook’s leaders on their outlook for regulatory pressure following these two developments would be welcome insight for investors.\n“Getting out from underneath the FTC investigation, for the moment, takes a big weight off of Facebook’s back, but the regulatory environment isn’t getting any easier anytime soon,” said Daniel Newman, principal analyst at Futurum Research.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":649,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":809613893,"gmtCreate":1627364710912,"gmtModify":1703488443762,"author":{"id":"3584234820747668","authorId":"3584234820747668","name":"IcyMystique","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9439224a99e598d4c932b2654768ee4d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584234820747668","authorIdStr":"3584234820747668"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a
Indexes: Dow -0.31%, S&P 500 -0.35%, Nasdaq -0.38%
\n
\n
(Updates following end of session)
\n
July 13 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended lower on Tuesday after hitting record highs earlier in the session, with investors digesting a jump in consumer prices in June and earnings from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs that kicked off the quarterly reporting season.
\n
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached fresh record highs but quickly fell into negative territory after an auction of 30-year Treasuries showed less demand than some investors expected and pushed yields higher.
\n
Data indicated U.S. consumer prices rose by the most in 13 years last month, while so-called core consumer prices surged 4.5% year over year, the largest rise since November 1991.
\n
Economists viewed the price surge, driven by travel-rated services and used automobiles, as mostly temporary, aligning with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's long-standing views.
\n
\"Any time you get an uptick in interest rates the stock market is going to get nervous, especially on a day like today,\" said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey.
\n
The S&P 500 growth index dipped 0.05%, while the value index fell 0.70%.
\n
\"With growth outperforming value, the takeaway is clearly that inflation from a market perspective is not a real threat in the long term,\" said Keith Buchanan, a portfolio manager at GLOBALT Investments in Atlanta, Georgia.
\n
Ten of the 11 major S&P 500 sector indexes ended lower, with real estate , consumer discretionary and financials each down more than 1%.
\n
JPMorgan Chase & Co stock fell 1.5% after the company reported blockbuster quarterly profit growth but warned that the sunny outlook would not make for blockbuster revenues in the short term due to low interest rates.
\n
Goldman Sachs Group Inc dipped 1.2% after its quarterly earnings exceeded forecasts.
\n
Citigroup , Wells Fargo & Co and Bank of America were due to report their quarterly results early on Wednesday.
\n
PepsiCo Inc gained 2.3% after raising its full-year earnings forecast, betting on accelerating demand as COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease.
\n
June-quarter earnings per share for S&P 500 companies are expected to rise 66%, according to Refinitiv data, with investors questioning how long Wall Street's rally would last after a 16% rise in the benchmark index so far this year.
\n
All eyes now turn to Fed Chair Jerome Powell's congressional testimony on Wednesday and Thursday for his comments about rising price pressures and monetary support going forward.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.31% to end at 34,888.79 points, while the S&P 500 lost 0.35% to 4,369.21.
\n
The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.38% to 14,677.65.
\n
Conagra Brands Inc dropped 5.4% after the packaged foods company warned that higher raw material and ingredient costs would take a bigger bite out of its profit this year than previously estimated.
\n
Boeing Co fell 4.2% after the Federal Aviation Administration said late on Monday some undelivered 787 Dreamliners have a new manufacturing quality issue.
\n
Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 2.85-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 3.06-to-1 ratio favored decliners.
\n
The S&P 500 posted 39 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 61 new highs and 73 new lows.
\n
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 9.5 billion shares, compared with the 10.5 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
\n
(Additional reporting by Devik Jain and Shreyashi Sanyal in Bengaluru; Editing by Cynthia That relative strength is admirable, but it's a bit frustrating for investors who don't want to pay the wrong price for the right company.
\n
That's why I'm making a shopping list of expensive tech stocks which I'd eagerly buy during the next market crash. Let's take a look at three of those companies:Snowflake(NYSE:SNOW),Twilio(NYSE:TWLO), and CrowdStrike(NASDAQ:CRWD).
\n
\n
1. Snowflake
\n
Snowflake was one of the hottest tech IPOs of 2020, thanks to its jaw-dropping growth rates and big investments from Berkshire Hathaway and salesforce.com.
\n
Snowflake'scloud-baseddata warehouse pulls all of a company's data onto a single platform, where it can then be fed into third-party data visualization apps. Its service breaks down the silos between different departments and computing platforms, which makes it easier for large companies to make data-driven decisions.
\n
Snowflake's number of customers jumped 73% to 4,139 in fiscal 2021 (which ended this January), including 186 of the Fortune 500 companies. Its revenue surged 124% to $592 million, as its net retention rate -- which gauges its year-over-year revenue growth per existing customer -- hit 165%.
\n
That growth continued in the first quarter of 2022. Its revenue rose 110% year over year to $228.9 million, its number of customers increased 67% to 4,532, and it achieved a net retention rate of 168%.
\n
But Snowflake isn't profitable yet. ItsGAAPnet loss widened from $348.5 million in fiscal 2020 to $539.1 million in fiscal 2021, andmore than doubledfrom $93.6 million to $203.2 million in the first quarter of 2022. It's also unprofitable on a non-GAAP basis, which excludes its stock-based compensation expenses.
\n
Analysts expect Snowflake's revenue to rise 88% this year, with a narrower loss. However, its stock still trades at 65 times this year's sales -- which indicates there's still far too much growth baked into the stock. But if Snowflake gets cut in half in a crash, I'd considerstarting a big position.
\n
2. Twilio
\n
Twilio's cloud platform processes text messages, calls, and videos within apps. For example, it helps Lyft's passengers contact their drivers, and Airbnb's guests reach their hosts.
\n
In the past, developers built those tools from scratch, which was generally time-consuming, buggy, and difficult to scale. However, developers can now outsource those features to Twilio's cloud service by simply adding a few lines of code to their apps.
\n
Twilio's revenue rose 55% to $1.76 billion in 2020. Its net expansion rate, which is comparable to Snowflake's net retention rate, reached 137%. In the first quarter of 2021, its revenue jumped 62% year over year to $590 million as it integrated its recent purchase of the customer data firm Segment.
\n
Twilio remains unprofitable on a GAAP basis, but its non-GAAP net income rose 62% to $35.9 million in 2020. In the first quarter of 2021, its non-GAAP net income rose another 15% to $9.6 million.
\n
Analysts expect its revenue to rise 44% this year, but for its non-GAAP earnings to dip into the red again amid higher investments and rising A2P (application-to-person) fees, which are now charged by carriers whenever an app accesses an SMS network.
\n
That near-term outlook doesn't look great for a stock that trades at nearly 30 times this year's sales. However, I still think Twilio has great growth potential, and I'd definitely buy its stock at a lower price.
\n
3. CrowdStrike
\n
CrowdStrike is a cybersecurity company that differs from its industry peers in one major way. Most cybersecurity companies install on-site appliances to support their services, which can be expensive to maintain and difficult to scale as an organization expands. That relative strength is admirable, but it's a bit frustrating for investors who don't want to pay the wrong price for the right company.\nThat's why I'm making a shopping list of expensive tech stocks which I'd eagerly buy during the next market crash. Let's take a look at three of those companies:Snowflake(NYSE:SNOW),Twilio(NYSE:TWLO), and CrowdStrike(NASDAQ:CRWD).\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\n1. Snowflake\nSnowflake was one of the hottest tech IPOs of 2020, thanks to its jaw-dropping growth rates and big investments from Berkshire Hathaway and salesforce.com.\nSnowflake'scloud-baseddata warehouse pulls all of a company's data onto a single platform, where it can then be fed into third-party data visualization apps. Its service breaks down the silos between different departments and computing platforms, which makes it easier for large companies to make data-driven decisions.\nSnowflake's number of customers jumped 73% to 4,139 in fiscal 2021 (which ended this January), including 186 of the Fortune 500 companies. Its revenue surged 124% to $592 million, as its net retention rate -- which gauges its year-over-year revenue growth per existing customer -- hit 165%.\nThat growth continued in the first quarter of 2022. Its revenue rose 110% year over year to $228.9 million, its number of customers increased 67% to 4,532, and it achieved a net retention rate of 168%.\nBut Snowflake isn't profitable yet. ItsGAAPnet loss widened from $348.5 million in fiscal 2020 to $539.1 million in fiscal 2021, andmore than doubledfrom $93.6 million to $203.2 million in the first quarter of 2022. It's also unprofitable on a non-GAAP basis, which excludes its stock-based compensation expenses.\nAnalysts expect Snowflake's revenue to rise 88% this year, with a narrower loss. However, its stock still trades at 65 times this year's sales -- which indicates there's still far too much growth baked into the stock. But if Snowflake gets cut in half in a crash, I'd considerstarting a big position.\n2. Twilio\nTwilio's cloud platform processes text messages, calls, and videos within apps. For example, it helps Lyft's passengers contact their drivers, and Airbnb's guests reach their hosts.\nIn the past, developers built those tools from scratch, which was generally time-consuming, buggy, and difficult to scale. However, developers can now outsource those features to Twilio's cloud service by simply adding a few lines of code to their apps.\nTwilio's revenue rose 55% to $1.76 billion in 2020. Its net expansion rate, which is comparable to Snowflake's net retention rate, reached 137%. In the first quarter of 2021, its revenue jumped 62% year over year to $590 million as it integrated its recent purchase of the customer data firm Segment.\nTwilio remains unprofitable on a GAAP basis, but its non-GAAP net income rose 62% to $35.9 million in 2020. In the first quarter of 2021, its non-GAAP net income rose another 15% to $9.6 million.\nAnalysts expect its revenue to rise 44% this year, but for its non-GAAP earnings to dip into the red again amid higher investments and rising A2P (application-to-person) fees, which are now charged by carriers whenever an app accesses an SMS network.\nThat near-term outlook doesn't look great for a stock that trades at nearly 30 times this year's sales. However, I still think Twilio has great growth potential, and I'd definitely buy its stock at a lower price.\n3. CrowdStrike\nCrowdStrike is a cybersecurity company that differs from its industry peers in one major way. Most cybersecurity companies install on-site appliances to support their services, which can be expensive to maintain and difficult to scale as an organization expands. CrowdStrike eliminates those appliances by offering its end-to-end security platform as a cloud-based service.\nCrowdStrike's growth clearly reflects its disruptive potential. Its revenue rose 82% to $874.4 million in fiscal 2021 (which ended this January), its number of subscription customers increased 82% to 9,896, and its net retention rate stayed above 120%.\nIn the first quarter of fiscal 2022, its revenue rose 70% year over year to $302.8 million, its subscriber base expanded 82% year over year to 11,420, and it kept its retention rate above 120%.\nCrowdStrike also turned profitable on a non-GAAP basis in 2021, with a net profit of $62.6 million. Its non-GAAP net income rose more than fivefold year over year to $23.3 million in the first quarter of 2022.\nThose numbers are impressive, but CrowdStrike still trades at about 350 times forward earnings and more than 40 times this year's sales. Therefore, this is another stock I won't buy unless the market crashes.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":31,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":809619920,"gmtCreate":1627364606060,"gmtModify":1703488441644,"author":{"id":"3584234820747668","authorId":"3584234820747668","name":"IcyMystique","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9439224a99e598d4c932b2654768ee4d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584234820747668","authorIdStr":"3584234820747668"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ohhhh?","listText":"Ohhhh?","text":"Ohhhh?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/809619920","repostId":"1109472394","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1109472394","pubTimestamp":1627363467,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1109472394?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-27 13:24","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Elon Musk Says He May Skip Future Tesla Earnings Calls","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1109472394","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Elon Musk dropped a bit of a bomb on Tesla Inc.’s earnings call: He won’t necessarily be doing the q","content":"
Elon Musk dropped a bit of a bomb on Tesla Inc.’s earnings call: He won’t necessarily be doing the quarterly calls going forward.
\n
“I will no longer default to doing earnings call,” Tesla’s chief executive officer said during the company’s second-quarter earnings call Monday. “Obviously I’ll do the annual shareholder meeting, but I think that going forward I will most likely not be on earnings calls unless there’s something really important that I need to say.”
\n
Answering a question on whether he’d do interviews with YouTubers, Musk argued that there’s only so much time in the day and if he’s doing interviews, he can’t be doing “other work.”
\n
Over the years Musk himself has been a central feature of the calls. At one point, President Joe Biden said “they’re killing people” in regards to the misinformation on Facebook.\nHearing directly from Facebook’s leaders on their outlook for regulatory pressure following these two developments would be welcome insight for investors.\n“Getting out from underneath the FTC investigation, for the moment, takes a big weight off of Facebook’s back, but the regulatory environment isn’t getting any easier anytime soon,” said Daniel Newman, principal analyst at Futurum Research.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":649,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":145894295,"gmtCreate":1626215417217,"gmtModify":1703755511739,"author":{"id":"3584234820747668","authorId":"3584234820747668","name":"IcyMystique","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9439224a99e598d4c932b2654768ee4d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584234820747668","authorIdStr":"3584234820747668"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Go I searched Twitter for both terms with the word “stocks” included, and here’s what I found:
\n

\n
I have a proposition for you. In the name of flipping it, we should consider the following two terms as much more insightful and helpful to investors and traders:
\n
FOLO (fear of living once) and YOMO (you only miss out).
\n
Here’s a story I’ve told about how things can go wrong even when you’re think you’re trading well and outperforming the markets seems easy.
\n
Return to 2004
\n
It was late January 2004, and I was starting my second full year of running a hedge fund, and I was off to an incredible start to the year. I’d come into 2004 steadily scaling into ever-larger and more aggressive positions in mostly internet core equipment vendors like Nortel, JDSU, and Cisco, not to mention my largest position in Apple, which I’d first bought for the fund back in March of 2003. (I held Apple along with occasional Apple call options until I closed the fund, by the way.) I’d made big money already in my hedge fund, which was full of mostly long positions as the markets had been in a big rebound from their October 2002 lows.
\n
As 2004 started, the markets were in what I called a Steady Betty Rally Mode at the time, and internet-equipment stocks were the single hottest sector into the new year. I started trimming some of my biggest winners down, including the aforementioned Nortel, JDSU and Cisco, along with any stocks that were up 20%, 30% or even more as January wore on. By late January, I was nearly back up to half in cash and the hedge fund was already up nearly 25% for the year while the broader markets were barely up 5% on the year.
\n
In the last week of January, the markets turned south and the highest-flying winners of the year, like those that I’d just sold down and taken huge profits on, were the hardest hit. I’d previously learned the hard way over the years that you should never confuse a bull market with genius, but I’d even nailed the near-term top and my whole year was already in the pocket. I was feeling pretty good about myself and my trading prowess and listening to Willie cover Woody Guthrie’s classic, “Stay a little longer” chuckling about how I’d left before the party was busted!
\n
By early February, I was “only” up just over 20% on the year, as I still had half my fund in stocks and a few options, but the markets were now down year to date and the stocks I’d so smartly sold down at the top had themselves pulled back 20%-30% from their highs. They finally were stabilizing and the charts started to turn upward as the stocks were flattish to down on the year.
\n
Here I was sitting on a huge pile of cash and feeling like a genius for having sold at the top and here was a chance to just slowly start rebuilding and buying some new stocks while they were down. I started to buy back a few shares and to put just a little bit of that 50% cash, along with more cash coming in, to work in the markets.
\n
By the time March rolled around, I was back fully invested and mostly long, up single digits on the year, and the markets were down about 10% or so on the year. One morning as I walked into my hedge fund hotel office that I rented from Bear Stearns on the 40th floor in midtown New York, I was shocked to see the Nasdaq futures were down huge. I pulled up the Bloomberg terminal and my heart sank as the headline screamed “Nortel admits fraud; Major telecom equipment vendors under investigation” or something along those lines. Nortel was cut in half and most every internet-equipment-related stock in the market was down 20% or more on the day. I puked my guts out that whole day and cried myself to sleep that night.
\n
I spent the rest of the year digging out of that hole and getting back ahead of the market and had a lot of success in that hedge fund from that bottom.
\n
Lesson of the week — do not dig yourself a hole, OK?
\n
Foreshadowing
\n
Here’s something I wrote in 2007, the last time I started turning from bullish to bearish and eventually traded my hedge fund for a TV gig right before the markets started tanking in late 2007: “Concerned about complacency” (May 3, 2007).
\n
Here’s an excerpt:
\n
I’m worried. That’s no news flash, as I’m always worried, but I am really concerned about the complacency out there. Earnings are great, as evidenced by the booming season we’re experiencing. The global economy is lifting a lot of boats. And every time I try to get bearish, I feel almost silly when the action, fundamentals and environment are this strong.
\n
Just about everybody is long real estate. … Wasn’t almost every rationalization for why we shouldn’t fret about any real estate bubble true when real estate crashed the last few times?
\n
Last month, the IMF reported that “the global economy remains on track for robust growth in 2007 and 2008. … Moreover, downside risks to the outlook seem less threatening than at the time of the September 2006 World Economic Outlook.” Has the IMF ever gotten the outlook right?
\n
This utter disregard for risk permeates the sell side, too, as evidenced by this broker note from Bear this morning: “Worries — the market is running out of major concerns.” Not surprisingly, I suppose, I’m going to flip that statement as I find I have more major concerns about the market and economy today than I’ve had at any point in the past five years.
\n
A Citi board member recently told me that I had a “lot of guts” for having launched a tech fund in October 2002. I think you’d have to have a lot of guts to launch a tech fund in May 2007! I’m focusing more on the short side than anything else right now.
\n
Beware when things are too easy
\n
Cody back in real time, 2021. I’m not saying the markets are about to tank like they did in 2008. But I am saying, once again, that I know way too many random hard-working people who are convinced that they can make big money in cryptos and meme stocks and by trading, trading, trading.
\n
And all my analysis points to an unfortunate risk/reward set up for the aggressive bulls here.
\n
That story above about Nortel: I’m here to tell you that you won’t always get a chance to sell when the charts stop working. You don’t always get a chance to lock in your gains while you think it’s easy.
\n
I’ve been in this business, picking stocks and helping people manage their money for 25 years, and it seems obvious to me that trading and investing and making profits and keeping those profits is very hard to do over many years. There are times it seems easy. That’s often the best time to get cautious. Because if it really were easy, nobody would work their real jobs. I searched Twitter for both terms with the word “stocks” included, and here’s what I found:\n\nI have a proposition for you. In the name of flipping it, we should consider the following two terms as much more insightful and helpful to investors and traders:\nFOLO (fear of living once) and YOMO (you only miss out).\nHere’s a story I’ve told about how things can go wrong even when you’re think you’re trading well and outperforming the markets seems easy.\nReturn to 2004\nIt was late January 2004, and I was starting my second full year of running a hedge fund, and I was off to an incredible start to the year. I’d come into 2004 steadily scaling into ever-larger and more aggressive positions in mostly internet core equipment vendors like Nortel, JDSU, and Cisco, not to mention my largest position in Apple, which I’d first bought for the fund back in March of 2003. (I held Apple along with occasional Apple call options until I closed the fund, by the way.) I’d made big money already in my hedge fund, which was full of mostly long positions as the markets had been in a big rebound from their October 2002 lows.\nAs 2004 started, the markets were in what I called a Steady Betty Rally Mode at the time, and internet-equipment stocks were the single hottest sector into the new year. I started trimming some of my biggest winners down, including the aforementioned Nortel, JDSU and Cisco, along with any stocks that were up 20%, 30% or even more as January wore on. By late January, I was nearly back up to half in cash and the hedge fund was already up nearly 25% for the year while the broader markets were barely up 5% on the year.\nIn the last week of January, the markets turned south and the highest-flying winners of the year, like those that I’d just sold down and taken huge profits on, were the hardest hit. I’d previously learned the hard way over the years that you should never confuse a bull market with genius, but I’d even nailed the near-term top and my whole year was already in the pocket. I was feeling pretty good about myself and my trading prowess and listening to Willie cover Woody Guthrie’s classic, “Stay a little longer” chuckling about how I’d left before the party was busted!\nBy early February, I was “only” up just over 20% on the year, as I still had half my fund in stocks and a few options, but the markets were now down year to date and the stocks I’d so smartly sold down at the top had themselves pulled back 20%-30% from their highs. They finally were stabilizing and the charts started to turn upward as the stocks were flattish to down on the year.\nHere I was sitting on a huge pile of cash and feeling like a genius for having sold at the top and here was a chance to just slowly start rebuilding and buying some new stocks while they were down. I started to buy back a few shares and to put just a little bit of that 50% cash, along with more cash coming in, to work in the markets.\nBy the time March rolled around, I was back fully invested and mostly long, up single digits on the year, and the markets were down about 10% or so on the year. One morning as I walked into my hedge fund hotel office that I rented from Bear Stearns on the 40th floor in midtown New York, I was shocked to see the Nasdaq futures were down huge. I pulled up the Bloomberg terminal and my heart sank as the headline screamed “Nortel admits fraud; Major telecom equipment vendors under investigation” or something along those lines. Nortel was cut in half and most every internet-equipment-related stock in the market was down 20% or more on the day. I puked my guts out that whole day and cried myself to sleep that night.\nI spent the rest of the year digging out of that hole and getting back ahead of the market and had a lot of success in that hedge fund from that bottom.\nLesson of the week — do not dig yourself a hole, OK?\nForeshadowing\nHere’s something I wrote in 2007, the last time I started turning from bullish to bearish and eventually traded my hedge fund for a TV gig right before the markets started tanking in late 2007: “Concerned about complacency” (May 3, 2007).\nHere’s an excerpt:\nI’m worried. That’s no news flash, as I’m always worried, but I am really concerned about the complacency out there. Earnings are great, as evidenced by the booming season we’re experiencing. The global economy is lifting a lot of boats. And every time I try to get bearish, I feel almost silly when the action, fundamentals and environment are this strong.\nJust about everybody is long real estate. … Wasn’t almost every rationalization for why we shouldn’t fret about any real estate bubble true when real estate crashed the last few times?\nLast month, the IMF reported that “the global economy remains on track for robust growth in 2007 and 2008. … Moreover, downside risks to the outlook seem less threatening than at the time of the September 2006 World Economic Outlook.” Has the IMF ever gotten the outlook right?\nThis utter disregard for risk permeates the sell side, too, as evidenced by this broker note from Bear this morning: “Worries — the market is running out of major concerns.” Not surprisingly, I suppose, I’m going to flip that statement as I find I have more major concerns about the market and economy today than I’ve had at any point in the past five years.\nA Citi board member recently told me that I had a “lot of guts” for having launched a tech fund in October 2002. I think you’d have to have a lot of guts to launch a tech fund in May 2007! I’m focusing more on the short side than anything else right now.\nBeware when things are too easy\nCody back in real time, 2021. I’m not saying the markets are about to tank like they did in 2008. But I am saying, once again, that I know way too many random hard-working people who are convinced that they can make big money in cryptos and meme stocks and by trading, trading, trading.\nAnd all my analysis points to an unfortunate risk/reward set up for the aggressive bulls here.\nThat story above about Nortel: I’m here to tell you that you won’t always get a chance to sell when the charts stop working. You don’t always get a chance to lock in your gains while you think it’s easy.\nI’ve been in this business, picking stocks and helping people manage their money for 25 years, and it seems obvious to me that trading and investing and making profits and keeping those profits is very hard to do over many years. There are times it seems easy. That’s often the best time to get cautious. Because if it really were easy, nobody would work their real jobs. We could all just trade stocks to each other all day and make all the money we need. Yeah, right.\nI have a new name or two I’m digging hard into this week, one in AI and another that’s trying to revolutionize long-term gig employment trends. Until then, I’m staying steady as she goes, even as so many others think YOLO and FOMO are just fun, little acronyms.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":107,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":809613893,"gmtCreate":1627364710912,"gmtModify":1703488443762,"author":{"id":"3584234820747668","authorId":"3584234820747668","name":"IcyMystique","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9439224a99e598d4c932b2654768ee4d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584234820747668","authorIdStr":"3584234820747668"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$VanEck Vectors Retail ETF(RTH)$are you in too?","listText":"$VanEck Vectors Retail ETF(RTH)$are you in too?","text":"$VanEck Vectors Retail ETF(RTH)$are you in too?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5d4733dc4da566dbbf173334187e5a25","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/809613893","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1127,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
