As a rotary native in a digital world, I can’t hope to keep up with the young, idle, and fiscally stimulated capitalists monetizing their ability to quickly spot chat-room microtrends in off-the-radar assets. But if the Reddit and Robinhood set has started recycling old jokes, well, that’s something I know a thing or two about.</p>\n<p>All I have to do now is screen the universe of past meme gainers for ones that now look like bargains. Granted, that can be challenging in asset classes that lack cash flows and defy traditional valuation.</p>\n<p>I’ve done some early theoretical work on a Capital ASS Coin Pricing Model, named of course for&nbsp;Australian Safe Shepherd, the cryptocurrency launched in April, whose canine theme is a nod to Dogecoin, which is itself a parody of Bitcoin, and whose cheeky acronym makes it endlessly memeable.</p>\n<p>Come to think of it, if past meme trades are coming around again, maybe that’s an idea for investors seeking terrible ideas at discounted prices. ASS recently changed hands at a hundred-millionth of a cent, down from over six hundred-millionths of a cent last month. Bottom-fishing, indeed—and inflation hawks will appreciate that future supply is capped by design at 200 sextillion coins.</p>\n<p>Meme-trade sequels can be just as action-packed as the originals, as AMC (ticker: AMC) has proved. The theater chain started this year at $2 a share, and hit $20 during the&nbsp;GameStop(GME) frenzy in late January. Then, it cooled to single digits late last month, before exploding to over $70 at one point this past week. The rise this time, like last, was linked to punch-line posting on Reddit, elevated short interest ripe for squeezing, and high volume in call options.</p>\n<p>AMC has used the run-up to issue obscene amounts of new stock. There are 513 million or so shares out now, up from 104 million a year ago. The company has multiplied about 20 times in value during a pandemic that shuttered its theaters, ballooned its debt, and accelerated Hollywood’s shift toward making movies for streaming rather than big screens.</p>\n<p>True, the proceeds from those stock sales convert trading hype into real-world assets. But if that’s a sustainable investment thesis, it’s time to start bulk-buying and guzzling Schlitz to profit from the five-cent bottle deposits.</p>\n<p>To be clear, the movie theater business, while deeply challenged, is recovering by the day.<i>A Quiet Place Part II</i>took in nearly $60 million over Memorial Day weekend—a success, with or without the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Chad Beynon of Macquarie Research, sees “great value” in two theater names,Cinemark Holdings(CNK) and&nbsp;IMAX(IMAX), but not in AMC. He points out that before the pandemic, in 2019, AMC and Cinemark produced similar earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda, but that AMC recently had 10 times Cinemark’s market value.</p>\n<p>BlackBerry&nbsp;(BB) also had its second blastoff of the year this past week. It, like AMC, fits the theme of traders showing improbable levels of enthusiasm for left-behind stocks the establishment has bet against. But what’s the next forgotten meme trade that fun-seekers will clown-car into?</p>\n<p>Please don’t say Bitcoin. It’s down from a high of $63,000 in April to a recent $37,000, but Tesla chief and crypto thought leader Elon Musk this past week tweeted a pair of relationship breakup memes that made veiled reference to Bitcoin. According to my discounted hashtag flow analysis, that’s the equivalent of a double downgrade on Wall Street.</p>\n<p>Wrong-name stocks have potential, but the blue chip of the group,Zoom Technologies(ZTNO), was asked by regulators to change its ticker from ZOOM after jumping one too many times in sympathy with&nbsp;Zoom Video Communications(ZM).AMC Networks(AMCX), the television concern that’s unrelated to the theater business, is another classic, but it’s too late—it jumped 13% on Friday.</p>\n<p>For now, I have my eye on cannabis crypto, nonfungible emoji tokens, and celebrity SPACs, or special purpose acquisition companies, now that the market has sold off. Basketball’s Shaquille O’Neal is on his second one, and Shaq rhymes with SPAC, which meme-logically speaking, could be a durable competitive advantage.</p>\n<p>Investment bank UBS likes package delivery but not boxes, it seems. In a roundup this past week of its “highest-conviction picks,” the bank predicted that&nbsp;FedEx(FDX) would rise to $383 a share, which would make for a gain of 27% from recent levels, but that&nbsp;International Paper(IP) would slip to $44, for a decline of 32%.</p>\n<p>FedEx trades at 15 times projected earnings for the coming four quarters, and IP, 13 times. Thomas Wadewitz, the FedEx analyst, likes that there is tight supply and elevated demand for parcel delivery, suggesting that profit margins will rise into next year. In particular, supply-chain mayhem has left factories and retailers with too little inventory, and leaving plenty of need for business-to-business shipments.</p>\n<p>Cleve Rueckert, the analyst on IP, estimates that containerboard for boxes is oversupplied to a degree that will drag prices down 5% next year from this year. Input costs, meanwhile, are rising. Containerboard mills that are reopening or under construction could add 7% to supply. Following the pandemic e-commerce spree, demand for containerboard will rise only 1% to 1.5% a year through 2024, Rueckert reckons.</p>\n<p>IP relies on containerboard for 80% of Ebitda. But if the Reddit and Robinhood set has started recycling old jokes, well, that’s something I know a thing or two about.\nAll I have to do now is screen the universe of past meme gainers for ones that now look like bargains. Granted, that can be challenging in asset classes that lack cash flows and defy traditional valuation.\nI’ve done some early theoretical work on a Capital ASS Coin Pricing Model, named of course for Australian Safe Shepherd, the cryptocurrency launched in April, whose canine theme is a nod to Dogecoin, which is itself a parody of Bitcoin, and whose cheeky acronym makes it endlessly memeable.\nCome to think of it, if past meme trades are coming around again, maybe that’s an idea for investors seeking terrible ideas at discounted prices. ASS recently changed hands at a hundred-millionth of a cent, down from over six hundred-millionths of a cent last month. Bottom-fishing, indeed—and inflation hawks will appreciate that future supply is capped by design at 200 sextillion coins.\nMeme-trade sequels can be just as action-packed as the originals, as AMC (ticker: AMC) has proved. The theater chain started this year at $2 a share, and hit $20 during the GameStop(GME) frenzy in late January. Then, it cooled to single digits late last month, before exploding to over $70 at one point this past week. The rise this time, like last, was linked to punch-line posting on Reddit, elevated short interest ripe for squeezing, and high volume in call options.\nAMC has used the run-up to issue obscene amounts of new stock. There are 513 million or so shares out now, up from 104 million a year ago. The company has multiplied about 20 times in value during a pandemic that shuttered its theaters, ballooned its debt, and accelerated Hollywood’s shift toward making movies for streaming rather than big screens.\nTrue, the proceeds from those stock sales convert trading hype into real-world assets. But if that’s a sustainable investment thesis, it’s time to start bulk-buying and guzzling Schlitz to profit from the five-cent bottle deposits.\nTo be clear, the movie theater business, while deeply challenged, is recovering by the day.A Quiet Place Part IItook in nearly $60 million over Memorial Day weekend—a success, with or without the pandemic.\nChad Beynon of Macquarie Research, sees “great value” in two theater names,Cinemark Holdings(CNK) and IMAX(IMAX), but not in AMC. It’s down from a high of $63,000 in April to a recent $37,000, but Tesla chief and crypto thought leader Elon Musk this past week tweeted a pair of relationship breakup memes that made veiled reference to Bitcoin. According to my discounted hashtag flow analysis, that’s the equivalent of a double downgrade on Wall Street.\nWrong-name stocks have potential, but the blue chip of the group,Zoom Technologies(ZTNO), was asked by regulators to change its ticker from ZOOM after jumping one too many times in sympathy with Zoom Video Communications(ZM).AMC Networks(AMCX), the television concern that’s unrelated to the theater business, is another classic, but it’s too late—it jumped 13% on Friday.\nFor now, I have my eye on cannabis crypto, nonfungible emoji tokens, and celebrity SPACs, or special purpose acquisition companies, now that the market has sold off. Basketball’s Shaquille O’Neal is on his second one, and Shaq rhymes with SPAC, which meme-logically speaking, could be a durable competitive advantage.\nInvestment bank UBS likes package delivery but not boxes, it seems. In a roundup this past week of its “highest-conviction picks,” the bank predicted that FedEx(FDX) would rise to $383 a share, which would make for a gain of 27% from recent levels, but that International Paper(IP) would slip to $44, for a decline of 32%.\nFedEx trades at 15 times projected earnings for the coming four quarters, and IP, 13 times. Thomas Wadewitz, the FedEx analyst, likes that there is tight supply and elevated demand for parcel delivery, suggesting that profit margins will rise into next year. In particular, supply-chain mayhem has left factories and retailers with too little inventory, and leaving plenty of need for business-to-business shipments.\nCleve Rueckert, the analyst on IP, estimates that containerboard for boxes is oversupplied to a degree that will drag prices down 5% next year from this year. More than anything, investors are buying it now as a speculative investment.\nThe price was sitting at $37,100 as of Friday afternoon and has been struggling to rebound to its May highs after Tesla CEO Elon Musk began moving crypto markets, sending bitcoin lower. The cryptocurrency is the largest by market cap, which is $693 billion as of Friday, according to Coin Metrics.\nHistorically, bitcoin’s demand has been driven largely by retail investors, but that narrative changed late last year as big investors and institutions began reconsidering their positions on it. Bitcoin has always and continues to suffer from reputational issues that are hard for it to shake, mostly because of its newness and therefore the lack of data or history to support its raison d’être.\nIf you’ve gotten caught in the confusion and misinformation around bitcoin, here are the key things to focus on if you’re considering bitcoin for your portfolio.\nBull case\nBitcoin, like gold, is a non-sovereign store of value that people can use to store wealth outside of the U.S. dollar system. It’s “digital gold” as its proponents often say, which is attractive given the increasing collective concern about inflation. More than that, it has the potential, once the market structure evolves, to serve as digital cash both domestically and across borders.\n“These are large markets, and you get them almost as a free call option on the ‘digital gold’ thesis,” said Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management. It’s also an attractive asset from a portfolio construction perspective, he added, because it gives investors high potential returns, low correlations to stocks and bonds, and liquidity in one asset.\n“The bull case can be seen when you look at the price trend, volume, and retail and institutional adoption,” said Max Schatzow, an attorney at Stark & Stark, where he advises investment advisers and broker-dealers on a range of financial regulatory matters. “We already witnessed the price north of $60,000 so with current prices, it would seem like there is room for growth based solely on historical prices. If demand continues to rise, that price should probably follow.”\nBear case\nBitcoin is high risk with potentially high reward or complete wipeouts that go to zero, said Jason Pride, CIO of private wealth at Glenmede. For that reason, his firm doesn’t recommend investors include it in their portfolio, despite some of the high returns the market has seen from it. Many point to bitcoin as being a diversifying non-correlated asset, but Pride noted that with every equity decline the market has seen, bitcoin has declined dramatically in tandem with it.\n“If the Fed were to pull back on stimulus, a majority of risk assets would decline,” he said. “If we were to have some extraordinary event, an economic downturn, bitcoin would probably be suffering right alongside equities. It did during the pandemic and during the December 2018 correction, which was a market liquidity event.”\nPlus, major exchanges and insurers might not have enough reserves to cover all their cryptocurrency activity, Schatzow said.\nBiggest risks\nVolatility– Bitcoin’s price suffers from massive swings due to its speculative nature and developing market infrastructure. While less volatility is necessary for it to prove itself a more reliable asset, it will always be somewhat volatile because of its perfect inelasticity, meaning the quantity of the bitcoin supply (which, again, is set at 21 million) doesn’t change in response to a move in the price of bitcoin. However, as the market structure continues to improve and mature price volatility should calm down.\n“Investors should think of bitcoin as a long-term buy-and-hold investment,” said Hougan. “Those who try to speculate on the short-term price movements of bitcoin are liable to get hurt.”\nLack of regulation– Cryptocurrencies are still so young that regulators still don’t fully understand which agencies should regulate them or how, since crypto also doesn’t fit perfectly into existing frameworks. For example, because bitcoin and other digital assets aren’t securities, they aren’t available on most custodial platforms. Custodians and other regulated financial firms can’t accommodate the rising crypto demand until there’s more regulatory clarity, which could slow industry growth. “More regulation will significantly help boost bitcoin’s adoption, to a point,” Hougan said. “But regulators could over-reach or enact poorly designed regulations that would hurt growth, and that is a risk worth monitoring.”\n“The continued lack of regulation and enforcement of intermediaries, promoters, and institutional traders is a disservice for bitcoin and its potential growth and acceptance,” Schatzow added. “Some people think regulation will hurt its prospects, but without a viable regulator of market participants, the market is susceptible to manipulation.”\nOther digital assets– It may have taken bitcoin more than a decade to be taken seriously by establishment institutions, but as it gains momentum, developers are working hard cryptocurrencies we’ve never even heard of that might become more dominant than bitcoin for one reason or another. “Development of alternative digital assets, currencies, and technologies are happening at supersonic speeds,” Schatzow said. “No one can predict whether Bitcoin will be the choice digital currency or store of value for the future. If people collectively decide that another digital currency or store of value is better, it could hurt bitcoin’s prospects. It seems remote now given Bitcoin’s staying power, but this is a nascent industry and don’t discount what happened to AOL.”\nPortfolio sizing\nAdvisors say bitcoin should be a complementary play, not a competitive one. Having an outsized position in bitcoin carries a lot of risks and investors need to size their allocation accordingly. ”[Bitcoin] can fall 50% in a very short period of time,” Hougan said. “If you have 1% to 5% of your portfolio invested in bitcoin, that’s not so bad.  But if you have 50% of your portfolio invested in bitcoin, that can be very, very tough. At that time, three software updates were announced: the iOS 11, macOS High Sierra and tvOS. Also, hardware updates were unveiled, including the Mac, iPad and HomePod.</p>\n<p>Looking at the performance of Apple shares a week before until the end of the event, AAPL investors did not show much enthusiasm. The stock moved 3% lower, trading at that time at $37.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/186aecd588efc459ba0be3e423485612\" tg-width=\"818\" tg-height=\"281\"><span>Figure 2: AAPL 2017 chart.</span></p>\n<p><b>WWDC 2018: modest climb</b></p>\n<p>In 2018, WWDC was held from June 4 to June 8. iOS 12 was announced, and so were software updates for Mac and Watch. This time, there were no hardware announcements.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/01f8d4a6d1b8bb55730d84f348b32520\" tg-width=\"818\" tg-height=\"285\"><span>Figure 3: AAPL 2018 chart.</span></p>\n<p>From one week prior until the end of the event, WWDC 2018 may have brought optimism to investors, as shares climbed by 2%, trading at that time at nearly $48.</p>\n<p><b>WWDC 2019: the start of the ramp</b></p>\n<p>The 2019 conference was held from June 3 to June 7. iOS 13 and other software updates were announced for the Mac, Watch, TV and iPad. Apple also launched hardware updates on Mac.</p>\n<p>Apple stock behaved well, rising nearly 7% from a week before to the end of the event. In 2019, WWDC coincided with the beginning of a massive climb in AAPL share price that lasted until the end of the year.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8e261dd232ee1779ea1d89a8ebd4dd7\" tg-width=\"818\" tg-height=\"280\"><span>Figure 4: AAPL 2019 chart.</span></p>\n<p><b>WWDC 2020: riding the recovery</b></p>\n<p>For the first time, the 2020 version of WWDC was held online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference happened from June 22 to June 26. At that time, iOS 14 was announced, alongside iPad, Watch, TV and Mac software updates.The highlight of the event&nbsp;was the announced transition to custom ARM processors for Mac.</p>\n<p>The stock was rebounding from the COVID-19 stock market crash at that time. Looking back at the period between a week prior to and the end of the event, shares were up 3%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6fa56b7f188ab147a30b9f13621f0024\" tg-width=\"814\" tg-height=\"281\"><span>Figure 5: AAPL 2020 chart.</span></p>\n<p><b>What history suggests</b></p>\n<p>It is hard to predict how Apple stock will behave in the near future. However, looking back at history, we can draw a few conclusions about AAPL share price behavior around WWDC in the last 5 years.</p>\n<p>Except for the 2017 conference, Apple caught an updraft around the WWDC weeks. Whether the performance is related to the event itself is a matter of interpretation.</p>\n<p><b>What to expect of WWDC 2021</b></p>\n<p>For this year’s WWDC, Apple will likely release the usual software updates. For investors, possible updates on the products and services front would be most meaningful.</p>\n<p>A possible successor for the M1 chip, a 27-inc Mac, a new MacBook Pro, updates on AR and VR technology and even hints about the Apple Car would certainly be highlights. Also, new hardware could be unveiled, but these announcements tend to be rare during the developers’ conference.\nToday, the Apple Maven looks back at the most recent WWDC events to check how the stock behaved prior to and immediately after the conference.\nBefore we dive in…\nKeep in mind that the Apple Maven will cover the event via live blog, starting at 9:45 a.m. Cupertino time (PDT), on June 7. At that time, three software updates were announced: the iOS 11, macOS High Sierra and tvOS. Also, hardware updates were unveiled, including the Mac, iPad and HomePod.\nLooking at the performance of Apple shares a week before until the end of the event, AAPL investors did not show much enthusiasm. Apple also launched hardware updates on Mac.\nApple stock behaved well, rising nearly 7% from a week before to the end of the event. The conference happened from June 22 to June 26. At that time, iOS 14 was announced, alongside iPad, Watch, TV and Mac software updates.The highlight of the event was the announced transition to custom ARM processors for Mac.\nThe stock was rebounding from the COVID-19 stock market crash at that time. But if the Reddit and Robinhood set has started recycling old jokes, well, that’s something I know a thing or two about.</p>\n<p>All I have to do now is screen the universe of past meme gainers for ones that now look like bargains. Granted, that can be challenging in asset classes that lack cash flows and defy traditional valuation.</p>\n<p>I’ve done some early theoretical work on a Capital ASS Coin Pricing Model, named of course for&nbsp;Australian Safe Shepherd, the cryptocurrency launched in April, whose canine theme is a nod to Dogecoin, which is itself a parody of Bitcoin, and whose cheeky acronym makes it endlessly memeable.</p>\n<p>Come to think of it, if past meme trades are coming around again, maybe that’s an idea for investors seeking terrible ideas at discounted prices. ASS recently changed hands at a hundred-millionth of a cent, down from over six hundred-millionths of a cent last month. Bottom-fishing, indeed—and inflation hawks will appreciate that future supply is capped by design at 200 sextillion coins.</p>\n<p>Meme-trade sequels can be just as action-packed as the originals, as AMC (ticker: AMC) has proved. The theater chain started this year at $2 a share, and hit $20 during the&nbsp;GameStop(GME) frenzy in late January. Then, it cooled to single digits late last month, before exploding to over $70 at one point this past week. The rise this time, like last, was linked to punch-line posting on Reddit, elevated short interest ripe for squeezing, and high volume in call options.</p>\n<p>AMC has used the run-up to issue obscene amounts of new stock. There are 513 million or so shares out now, up from 104 million a year ago. The company has multiplied about 20 times in value during a pandemic that shuttered its theaters, ballooned its debt, and accelerated Hollywood’s shift toward making movies for streaming rather than big screens.</p>\n<p>True, the proceeds from those stock sales convert trading hype into real-world assets. But if that’s a sustainable investment thesis, it’s time to start bulk-buying and guzzling Schlitz to profit from the five-cent bottle deposits.</p>\n<p>To be clear, the movie theater business, while deeply challenged, is recovering by the day.<i>A Quiet Place Part II</i>took in nearly $60 million over Memorial Day weekend—a success, with or without the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Chad Beynon of Macquarie Research, sees “great value” in two theater names,Cinemark Holdings(CNK) and&nbsp;IMAX(IMAX), but not in AMC. He points out that before the pandemic, in 2019, AMC and Cinemark produced similar earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda, but that AMC recently had 10 times Cinemark’s market value.</p>\n<p>BlackBerry&nbsp;(BB) also had its second blastoff of the year this past week. It, like AMC, fits the theme of traders showing improbable levels of enthusiasm for left-behind stocks the establishment has bet against. But what’s the next forgotten meme trade that fun-seekers will clown-car into?</p>\n<p>Please don’t say Bitcoin. It’s down from a high of $63,000 in April to a recent $37,000, but Tesla chief and crypto thought leader Elon Musk this past week tweeted a pair of relationship breakup memes that made veiled reference to Bitcoin. According to my discounted hashtag flow analysis, that’s the equivalent of a double downgrade on Wall Street.</p>\n<p>Wrong-name stocks have potential, but the blue chip of the group,Zoom Technologies(ZTNO), was asked by regulators to change its ticker from ZOOM after jumping one too many times in sympathy with&nbsp;Zoom Video Communications(ZM).AMC Networks(AMCX), the television concern that’s unrelated to the theater business, is another classic, but it’s too late—it jumped 13% on Friday.</p>\n<p>For now, I have my eye on cannabis crypto, nonfungible emoji tokens, and celebrity SPACs, or special purpose acquisition companies, now that the market has sold off. Basketball’s Shaquille O’Neal is on his second one, and Shaq rhymes with SPAC, which meme-logically speaking, could be a durable competitive advantage.</p>\n<p>Investment bank UBS likes package delivery but not boxes, it seems. In a roundup this past week of its “highest-conviction picks,” the bank predicted that&nbsp;FedEx(FDX) would rise to $383 a share, which would make for a gain of 27% from recent levels, but that&nbsp;International Paper(IP) would slip to $44, for a decline of 32%.</p>\n<p>FedEx trades at 15 times projected earnings for the coming four quarters, and IP, 13 times. Thomas Wadewitz, the FedEx analyst, likes that there is tight supply and elevated demand for parcel delivery, suggesting that profit margins will rise into next year. In particular, supply-chain mayhem has left factories and retailers with too little inventory, and leaving plenty of need for business-to-business shipments.</p>\n<p>Cleve Rueckert, the analyst on IP, estimates that containerboard for boxes is oversupplied to a degree that will drag prices down 5% next year from this year. Input costs, meanwhile, are rising. Containerboard mills that are reopening or under construction could add 7% to supply. Following the pandemic e-commerce spree, demand for containerboard will rise only 1% to 1.5% a year through 2024, Rueckert reckons.</p>\n<p>IP relies on containerboard for 80% of Ebitda. But if the Reddit and Robinhood set has started recycling old jokes, well, that’s something I know a thing or two about.\nAll I have to do now is screen the universe of past meme gainers for ones that now look like bargains. Granted, that can be challenging in asset classes that lack cash flows and defy traditional valuation.\nI’ve done some early theoretical work on a Capital ASS Coin Pricing Model, named of course for Australian Safe Shepherd, the cryptocurrency launched in April, whose canine theme is a nod to Dogecoin, which is itself a parody of Bitcoin, and whose cheeky acronym makes it endlessly memeable.\nCome to think of it, if past meme trades are coming around again, maybe that’s an idea for investors seeking terrible ideas at discounted prices. ASS recently changed hands at a hundred-millionth of a cent, down from over six hundred-millionths of a cent last month. Bottom-fishing, indeed—and inflation hawks will appreciate that future supply is capped by design at 200 sextillion coins.\nMeme-trade sequels can be just as action-packed as the originals, as AMC (ticker: AMC) has proved. The theater chain started this year at $2 a share, and hit $20 during the GameStop(GME) frenzy in late January. Then, it cooled to single digits late last month, before exploding to over $70 at one point this past week. The rise this time, like last, was linked to punch-line posting on Reddit, elevated short interest ripe for squeezing, and high volume in call options.\nAMC has used the run-up to issue obscene amounts of new stock. He points out that before the pandemic, in 2019, AMC and Cinemark produced similar earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda, but that AMC recently had 10 times Cinemark’s market value.\nBlackBerry (BB) also had its second blastoff of the year this past week. It, like AMC, fits the theme of traders showing improbable levels of enthusiasm for left-behind stocks the establishment has bet against. It’s down from a high of $63,000 in April to a recent $37,000, but Tesla chief and crypto thought leader Elon Musk this past week tweeted a pair of relationship breakup memes that made veiled reference to Bitcoin. According to my discounted hashtag flow analysis, that’s the equivalent of a double downgrade on Wall Street.\nWrong-name stocks have potential, but the blue chip of the group,Zoom Technologies(ZTNO), was asked by regulators to change its ticker from ZOOM after jumping one too many times in sympathy with Zoom Video Communications(ZM).AMC Networks(AMCX), the television concern that’s unrelated to the theater business, is another classic, but it’s too late—it jumped 13% on Friday.\nFor now, I have my eye on cannabis crypto, nonfungible emoji tokens, and celebrity SPACs, or special purpose acquisition companies, now that the market has sold off. Basketball’s Shaquille O’Neal is on his second one, and Shaq rhymes with SPAC, which meme-logically speaking, could be a durable competitive advantage.\nInvestment bank UBS likes package delivery but not boxes, it seems. In a roundup this past week of its “highest-conviction picks,” the bank predicted that FedEx(FDX) would rise to $383 a share, which would make for a gain of 27% from recent levels, but that International Paper(IP) would slip to $44, for a decline of 32%.\nFedEx trades at 15 times projected earnings for the coming four quarters, and IP, 13 times. Thomas Wadewitz, the FedEx analyst, likes that there is tight supply and elevated demand for parcel delivery, suggesting that profit margins will rise into next year. In particular, supply-chain mayhem has left factories and retailers with too little inventory, and leaving plenty of need for business-to-business shipments.\nCleve Rueckert, the analyst on IP, estimates that containerboard for boxes is oversupplied to a degree that will drag prices down 5% next year from this year. Input costs, meanwhile, are rising. Containerboard mills that are reopening or under construction could add 7% to supply. Following the pandemic e-commerce spree, demand for containerboard will rise only 1% to 1.5% a year through 2024, Rueckert reckons.\nIP relies on containerboard for 80% of Ebitda. More than anything, investors are buying it now as a speculative investment.\nThe price was sitting at $37,100 as of Friday afternoon and has been struggling to rebound to its May highs after Tesla CEO Elon Musk began moving crypto markets, sending bitcoin lower. The cryptocurrency is the largest by market cap, which is $693 billion as of Friday, according to Coin Metrics.\nHistorically, bitcoin’s demand has been driven largely by retail investors, but that narrative changed late last year as big investors and institutions began reconsidering their positions on it. Bitcoin has always and continues to suffer from reputational issues that are hard for it to shake, mostly because of its newness and therefore the lack of data or history to support its raison d’être.\nIf you’ve gotten caught in the confusion and misinformation around bitcoin, here are the key things to focus on if you’re considering bitcoin for your portfolio.\nBull case\nBitcoin, like gold, is a non-sovereign store of value that people can use to store wealth outside of the U.S. dollar system. It’s “digital gold” as its proponents often say, which is attractive given the increasing collective concern about inflation. More than that, it has the potential, once the market structure evolves, to serve as digital cash both domestically and across borders.\n“These are large markets, and you get them almost as a free call option on the ‘digital gold’ thesis,” said Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management. It’s also an attractive asset from a portfolio construction perspective, he added, because it gives investors high potential returns, low correlations to stocks and bonds, and liquidity in one asset.\n“The bull case can be seen when you look at the price trend, volume, and retail and institutional adoption,” said Max Schatzow, an attorney at Stark & Stark, where he advises investment advisers and broker-dealers on a range of financial regulatory matters. “We already witnessed the price north of $60,000 so with current prices, it would seem like there is room for growth based solely on historical prices. If demand continues to rise, that price should probably follow.”\nBear case\nBitcoin is high risk with potentially high reward or complete wipeouts that go to zero, said Jason Pride, CIO of private wealth at Glenmede. For that reason, his firm doesn’t recommend investors include it in their portfolio, despite some of the high returns the market has seen from it. Many point to bitcoin as being a diversifying non-correlated asset, but Pride noted that with every equity decline the market has seen, bitcoin has declined dramatically in tandem with it.\n“If the Fed were to pull back on stimulus, a majority of risk assets would decline,” he said. “If we were to have some extraordinary event, an economic downturn, bitcoin would probably be suffering right alongside equities. It did during the pandemic and during the December 2018 correction, which was a market liquidity event.”\nPlus, major exchanges and insurers might not have enough reserves to cover all their cryptocurrency activity, Schatzow said.\nBiggest risks\nVolatility– Bitcoin’s price suffers from massive swings due to its speculative nature and developing market infrastructure. While less volatility is necessary for it to prove itself a more reliable asset, it will always be somewhat volatile because of its perfect inelasticity, meaning the quantity of the bitcoin supply (which, again, is set at 21 million) doesn’t change in response to a move in the price of bitcoin. However, as the market structure continues to improve and mature price volatility should calm down.\n“Investors should think of bitcoin as a long-term buy-and-hold investment,” said Hougan. “Those who try to speculate on the short-term price movements of bitcoin are liable to get hurt.”\nLack of regulation– Cryptocurrencies are still so young that regulators still don’t fully understand which agencies should regulate them or how, since crypto also doesn’t fit perfectly into existing frameworks. For example, because bitcoin and other digital assets aren’t securities, they aren’t available on most custodial platforms. Custodians and other regulated financial firms can’t accommodate the rising crypto demand until there’s more regulatory clarity, which could slow industry growth. “More regulation will significantly help boost bitcoin’s adoption, to a point,” Hougan said. “But regulators could over-reach or enact poorly designed regulations that would hurt growth, and that is a risk worth monitoring.”\n“The continued lack of regulation and enforcement of intermediaries, promoters, and institutional traders is a disservice for bitcoin and its potential growth and acceptance,” Schatzow added. “Some people think regulation will hurt its prospects, but without a viable regulator of market participants, the market is susceptible to manipulation.”\nOther digital assets– It may have taken bitcoin more than a decade to be taken seriously by establishment institutions, but as it gains momentum, developers are working hard cryptocurrencies we’ve never even heard of that might become more dominant than bitcoin for one reason or another. “Development of alternative digital assets, currencies, and technologies are happening at supersonic speeds,” Schatzow said. “No one can predict whether Bitcoin will be the choice digital currency or store of value for the future. If people collectively decide that another digital currency or store of value is better, it could hurt bitcoin’s prospects. It seems remote now given Bitcoin’s staying power, but this is a nascent industry and don’t discount what happened to AOL.”\nPortfolio sizing\nAdvisors say bitcoin should be a complementary play, not a competitive one. Having an outsized position in bitcoin carries a lot of risks and investors need to size their allocation accordingly. ”[Bitcoin] can fall 50% in a very short period of time,” Hougan said. “If you have 1% to 5% of your portfolio invested in bitcoin, that’s not so bad.  But if you have 50% of your portfolio invested in bitcoin, that can be very, very tough.
