Since 1998, FedEx has grown from less than a 10% market share to over 30% as of 2021, trailing only UPS in revenue generated from ground shipping.</p><p>What makes the relationship between FedEx and UPS even more interesting is that despite similar sales over the last year of $92 billion and $97 billion, respectively, FedEx&#39;s market capitalization is only <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-third as big as its primary peer. Market caps act as a price tag for stocks and, in this case, help highlight a pretty significant discrepancy between two similarly sized operations.</p><p>So, what causes this large of a difference?</p><p>Free cash flow margins.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/692792cdde726629231cd9e585f707e8\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>FDX Free Cash Flow data by YCharts</p><p>Despite having similar revenue totals, UPS generated three times as much free cash flow as FedEx, thanks to its more efficient capital spending.</p><p>I&#39;m focusing on FedEx instead of UPS because FedEx&#39;s focus on small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses makes it uniquely positioned to benefit from an increasingly entrepreneurial global economy. While UPS shares this focus, FedEx has truly doubled down on its e-commerce capacity over the last few years, trading off short term profitability in favor of long-term cash flows -- across both its ground and freight segments.</p><p>With U.S. e-commerce expected to grow by 50% over the next four years, according to Statista, FedEx should see solid top-line growth and improving margins from this portion of its business as it matures.</p><p>Second, FedEx plans to finally integrate its acquisition of Europe-based TNT fully by the end of April, streamlining operations among the combined companies&#39; flight routes and airports. While this acquisition has dragged on for years, the synergies from this purchase may finally take hold, making it pivotal for investors to watch in the upcoming quarters.</p><p>Having restarted its dividend growth early in 2021, FedEx now yields 1.5% while maintaining a tiny payout ratio of 16% -- leaving ample room for increases in the future.</p><p>Thanks to this dividend growth potential, the prospect of improving margins over the coming years, and its forward price-to-earnings ratio of only 9.9, FedEx makes for an excellent value stock to consider for the long term.</p><h2>Crocs</h2><p>Having dropped over 50% from its 52-week highs, beloved foam shoe creator <b>Crocs</b> has seen its price-to-earnings ratio drop to a rarely seen 6.4.</p><p>Perhaps due to concerns around its $2.5 billion acquisition of fellow plastic shoe company Hey Dude, Crocs shares have been roughed up despite posting 65% and 150% sales and earnings growth, respectively, in 2021.</p><p>However, Hey Dude projects to be immediately accretive to both the top line and earnings, making the market&#39;s sentiment toward the stock confounding. Furthermore, Hey Dude&#39;s line of shoes created from recycled plastic pairs nicely with the clog maker&#39;s plan of reaching a net-zero carbon impact by 2030.</p><p>Adding even more validation to bullish Crocs investors, the company&#39;s growing return on invested capital (ROIC) over the last five years has been simply phenomenal.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6e0e287581ea10238103b269ed7e235f\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>CROX Return on Invested Capital data by YCharts</p><p>ROIC essentially measures a company&#39;s profitability compared to the capital circulating in the business.</p><p>Historically, higher ROICs offer stronger outperformance potential, making Crocs&#39; mark of 98% incredibly promising. Furthermore, stocks with consistently increasing ROICs tend to outperform the broader stock market -- making me wonder if Crocs&#39; brightest days may still be ahead.</p><p>As long as Crocs has a single-digit price-to-earnings ratio, its growth potential and this operational efficiency make it far too tempting for value investors not to consider buying.</p><h2>NVR</h2><p>Using its unique, asset-light operating model (as far as home builders go), <b>NVR</b> offers investors an additional layer of security in an otherwise secular housing industry.</p><p>By not participating in land development activities and avoiding direct land ownership, NVR removes many risks that other home-building stocks face. Instead, it signs lot purchase agreements that generally require the company to deposit up to 10% of the total lot price -- freeing up massive amounts of capital to be used elsewhere.</p><p>Due to this differentiation from its peers, NVR holds a best-in-class ROIC among its largest peers in the residential construction sector.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fdd4e823f86810cb8213f2ff818b059b\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"500\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>NVR Return on Invested Capital (5y Median) data by YCharts</p><p>The most important thing to note from the chart above is NVR&#39;s performance after the housing bubble and financial crisis from 2008 to 2010. Since 1998, FedEx has grown from less than a 10% market share to over 30% as of 2021, trailing only UPS in revenue generated from ground shipping.What makes the relationship between FedEx and UPS even more interesting is that despite similar sales over the last year of $92 billion and $97 billion, respectively, FedEx's market capitalization is only one-third as big as its primary peer. Market caps act as a price tag for stocks and, in this case, help highlight a pretty significant discrepancy between two similarly sized operations.So, what causes this large of a difference?Free cash flow margins.FDX Free Cash Flow data by YChartsDespite having similar revenue totals, UPS generated three times as much free cash flow as FedEx, thanks to its more efficient capital spending.I'm focusing on FedEx instead of UPS because FedEx's focus on small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses makes it uniquely positioned to benefit from an increasingly entrepreneurial global economy. While UPS shares this focus, FedEx has truly doubled down on its e-commerce capacity over the last few years, trading off short term profitability in favor of long-term cash flows -- across both its ground and freight segments.With U.S. e-commerce expected to grow by 50% over the next four years, according to Statista, FedEx should see solid top-line growth and improving margins from this portion of its business as it matures.Second, FedEx plans to finally integrate its acquisition of Europe-based TNT fully by the end of April, streamlining operations among the combined companies' flight routes and airports. While this acquisition has dragged on for years, the synergies from this purchase may finally take hold, making it pivotal for investors to watch in the upcoming quarters.Having restarted its dividend growth early in 2021, FedEx now yields 1.5% while maintaining a tiny payout ratio of 16% -- leaving ample room for increases in the future.Thanks to this dividend growth potential, the prospect of improving margins over the coming years, and its forward price-to-earnings ratio of only 9.9, FedEx makes for an excellent value stock to consider for the long term.CrocsHaving dropped over 50% from its 52-week highs, beloved foam shoe creator Crocs has seen its price-to-earnings ratio drop to a rarely seen 6.4.Perhaps due to concerns around its $2.5 billion acquisition of fellow plastic shoe company Hey Dude, Crocs shares have been roughed up despite posting 65% and 150% sales and earnings growth, respectively, in 2021.However, Hey Dude projects to be immediately accretive to both the top line and earnings, making the market's sentiment toward the stock confounding. Over time, it will likely achieve scale and deliver positive earnings per share. That comes as Bezos handed off the CEO role to Andy Jassy earlier this month.</p>\n<p>Shares of Amazon have underperformed the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100&nbsp;and the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;in 2021, even as the coronavirus pandemic forced Americans to rely on its service during the darkest days.</p>\n<p>Given all this, it is worth considering e-commerce alternatives if you’re worried that Amazon’s best days are behind it.</p>\n<p>Here are five smaller high-growth companies you may want to research:</p>\n<p><b>Sea</b></p>\n<p>Shares of&nbsp;Sea Ltd.&nbsp;are up about 45% in 2021, hitting new all-time highs as it continues its aggressive growth across Asia and Latin America.</p>\n<p>The Singapore-based company has a broad business model capitalizing on e-commerce and digital retail operations around the world. That includes its Garena digital entertainment platform that publishes video games and offers e-sports tie-ins, the Shopee e-commerce platform and SeaMoney digital financial services that include mobile payment services.</p>\n<p>Sea was a darling in 2020 as it rode the “stay at home trade” to great success. Revenue doubled year over year in 2020 to $4.4 billion, and the company’s momentum was the envy of Wall Street as Sea stock racked up roughly 640% gains on the calendar year.</p>\n<p>But the fundamentals shown by Sea in 2021 hint that the surge in share prices were justified. Consider that in its first-quarter report in May, revenue surged by about&nbsp;150%— while gross profit tripled year over year.</p>\n<p>With its next earnings report scheduled for mid-August, Sea stock could see another leg up as it continues to prove Amazon isn’t the only e-commerce name worth watching.</p>\n<p><b>Coupang</b></p>\n<p>While Sea has been a cult stock for a while in some circles, one Asian e-commerce stock that is still flying under the radar for many is Korea-based Coupang Inc..&nbsp;South Korea’s biggest e-commerce company began trading in March after an IPO that raised $4.6 billion, but since then shares have drifted lower — and other cult-like stocks have won all the attention.</p>\n<p>If you haven’t yet heard of Coupang, its model should be quite familiar. It sells various products including home goods, apparel, beauty products, sporting goods and electronics. It’s also looking beyond these tried-and-true categories to include a focus on fresh food and groceries, as well as services including travel and restaurant delivery.</p>\n<p>Though the fundamentals are light given its recent debut, the numbers we have do show this regional e-tailer is connecting in a big way in Korea. Namely, it saw net revenue growth of 74% in its first-quarter report in May, and gross profit up 70% year over year. Total customers grew 21%, and revenue per customer surged 44%.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, the total customer base in that quarter was just 16 million households — hardly Amazon-esque. And so far in 2021, share prices has slumped slightly, even though the S&amp;P 500 has powered higher. But remember, this is a company that just raised $4.6 billion — with a “B” — and is serious about growth. Considering the language and logistical barriers to competition in the markets it serves that clearly have long-term growth potential, investors may want to consider the lull in Coupang shares a buying opportunity.</p>\n<p><b>MercadoLibre</b></p>\n<p>Taking a page out of the playbook of Silicon Valley stocks that boast high share prices and a refusal to split, MercadoLibre Inc.&nbsp;is currently trading well above four figures — and based on recent history, seems as if it’s likely to stay there.</p>\n<p>MercadoLibre stock has cooled off in 2021 and is sitting on a slight loss year to date, compared with an uptrend broadly for U.S. stocks. However, that’s after this Latin American stock racked up 200% gains last year. Argentina-based MercadoLibre is hardly slowing down, however, as in the first quarter it reported&nbsp;70 million&nbsp;active users — an increase of 62% above the just over 43 million users in the prior year. Gross merchandise volume was up even more at a 77% year-over-year growth rate to just over $6 billion, compared with $3.4 billion in the first quarter of 2020.</p>\n<p>What’s really exciting for investors, however, is that the gains in core e-commerce transactions is supplemented by continued growth into financial services. MercadoLibre reported an impressive $2.9 billion in payment volume through its mobile wallet platform, and its Mercado Credito lending platform saw its portfolio grow to $576 million — more than doubling over the prior year.</p>\n<p>Amazon has taught e-commerce companies that dominating all aspects of the consumer experience is how to truly build a dominant operation. With MercadoLibre growing sales but also increasingly connecting on the financial side, it is setting up itself to be a force in Latin America — and a real competitor to even entrenched western e-commerce brands.</p>\n<p><b>Newegg</b></p>\n<p>Newegg Commerce Inc.&nbsp;is a consumer-electronics e-tailer that has a bit of a following in computer geek circles but largely has gone unnoticed by most consumers and investors. That is, until it spiked from $10 a share to a brief high above $60 a share in July.</p>\n<p>The inciting incident was news that Newegg would carry hard-to-get Nvidia&nbsp;graphics hardware, and theoretically see a big bump in revenue and profits as a result. However, Newegg may be proving that it is much more than just a tangential play piggybacking off Nvidia as it proves there is real value to specialty retailers that serve a specific audience — and can offer in-demand products instead of knock-offs propped up by fraudulent five-star reviews.</p>\n<p>Newegg went public via a SPAC, so it doesn’t have a lot of history to show investors just yet. But what little we know is proof that Newegg stock has potential. Consider it commands an impressive market share when it comes to core hardware items like PC processors, motherboards and the like. But remember, this is a company that just raised $4.6 billion — with a “B” — and is serious about growth. Considering the language and logistical barriers to competition in the markets it serves that clearly have long-term growth potential, investors may want to consider the lull in Coupang shares a buying opportunity.\nMercadoLibre\nTaking a page out of the playbook of Silicon Valley stocks that boast high share prices and a refusal to split, MercadoLibre Inc. is currently trading well above four figures — and based on recent history, seems as if it’s likely to stay there.\nMercadoLibre stock has cooled off in 2021 and is sitting on a slight loss year to date, compared with an uptrend broadly for U.S. stocks. However, that’s after this Latin American stock racked up 200% gains last year. Argentina-based MercadoLibre is hardly slowing down, however, as in the first quarter it reported 70 million active users — an increase of 62% above the just over 43 million users in the prior year. That puts the movie-theater chain’s market capitalization at roughly $16 billion, more than 15 times what it was in 2018, a record-breaking year at the box office.&nbsp;Shares were up another 34%, to $42.92, in premarket trading Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Even if investors missed an inflection point, though, the math doesn’t add up. The reason might be that market cap isn’t the right measure. Maybe it’s enterprise value, which is essentially market cap and debt. AMC’s enterprise value is about $26 billion, compared with $6.2 billion or so at the end of 2018.</p>\n<p>AMC added debt during the pandemic as theaters in the country’s biggest cities were dark for months. And the numbers make it easy to understand why: The U.S. box office in 2020 generated about $2.1 billion in ticket sales, down 81% from the 2018 record of $11.9 billion.</p>\n<p>So, it seems investors have been vexed by movie theater economics. But it wouldn’t be the first time. The industry essentially went belly up at the turn of the millennium. Regal Cinemas, for instance, declared bankruptcy in 2001.</p>\n<p>Back then, the industry had plenty of capacity because of a new theater design—stadium seating that gave a better view of the screen. That shift meant movie theater chains had to renovate or risk losing all their patrons to movie theaters that offered the better view. In the end, too many seats and not enough patrons meant the return on the stadium-seating investments never materialized.</p>\n<p>The upshot was consolidation. With fewer operators, the number of screens stabilized. Between 2002 and 2007, Regal Cinemas became a cash-generating machine because the stock was mispriced. The stock returned 21% a year on average. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both returned less than 9% a year on average over the same period.</p>\n<p>In those days, Regal Cinema’s enterprise value about $5 billion, or about 50% of total U.S. box office sales. That’s far short of AMC today. Something new has to be different for AMC to be worth it.</p>\n<p>Maybe the movie theater business is going to go through another period of consolidation, which can usher in another golden age of returns. AMC’s Tuesday gains, in fact, were catalyzed by new capital raised so the company could go on the offensive, acquiring defunct chains. Monopolies, after all, can be good for stock returns.</p>\n<p>If AMC can increase market share and the U.S. box office sales can return to 2018 levels in a few years, total sales at might be $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 amounted to $5.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Then, with better gross profit margins derived from larger scale, AMC might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually, which puts the stock at about a 4% free cash flow yield. The S&amp;P 500 trades for about a 3% free cash flow yield. The numbers can work—if they’re stretched.</p>\n<p>There are problems with this scenario, though. There are lots of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past. Arriving at $600 million in free cash flow is more about justifying current valuations than predicting what is likely.</p>\n<p>Also, with mergers and acquisitions, AMC market shares might rise, but there are still competitors. That puts the movie-theater chain’s market capitalization at roughly $16 billion, more than 15 times what it was in 2018, a record-breaking year at the box office. Shares were up another 34%, to $42.92, in premarket trading Wednesday.\nEven if investors missed an inflection point, though, the math doesn’t add up. The reason might be that market cap isn’t the right measure. Maybe it’s enterprise value, which is essentially market cap and debt. AMC’s enterprise value is about $26 billion, compared with $6.2 billion or so at the end of 2018.\nAMC added debt during the pandemic as theaters in the country’s biggest cities were dark for months. And the numbers make it easy to understand why: The U.S. box office in 2020 generated about $2.1 billion in ticket sales, down 81% from the 2018 record of $11.9 billion.\nSo, it seems investors have been vexed by movie theater economics. But it wouldn’t be the first time. The industry essentially went belly up at the turn of the millennium. Regal Cinemas, for instance, declared bankruptcy in 2001.\nBack then, the industry had plenty of capacity because of a new theater design—stadium seating that gave a better view of the screen. That shift meant movie theater chains had to renovate or risk losing all their patrons to movie theaters that offered the better view. In the end, too many seats and not enough patrons meant the return on the stadium-seating investments never materialized.\nThe upshot was consolidation. With fewer operators, the number of screens stabilized. Between 2002 and 2007, Regal Cinemas became a cash-generating machine because the stock was mispriced. The stock returned 21% a year on average. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both returned less than 9% a year on average over the same period.\nIn those days, Regal Cinema’s enterprise value about $5 billion, or about 50% of total U.S. box office sales. That’s far short of AMC today. Something new has to be different for AMC to be worth it.\nMaybe the movie theater business is going to go through another period of consolidation, which can usher in another golden age of returns. AMC’s Tuesday gains, in fact, were catalyzed by new capital raised so the company could go on the offensive, acquiring defunct chains. Monopolies, after all, can be good for stock returns.\nIf AMC can increase market share and the U.S. box office sales can return to 2018 levels in a few years, total sales at might be $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 amounted to $5.5 billion.\nThen, with better gross profit margins derived from larger scale, AMC might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually, which puts the stock at about a 4% free cash flow yield. The S&P 500 trades for about a 3% free cash flow yield. The numbers can work—if they’re stretched.\nThere are problems with this scenario, though. There are lots of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past. Arriving at $600 million in free cash flow is more about justifying current valuations than predicting what is likely.\nAlso, with mergers and acquisitions, AMC market shares might rise, but there are still competitors. Here&#39;s why.</p><h2>It&#39;s a trailblazer</h2><p>Artificial intelligence (AI) brings boundless possibilities to the business world through its ability to complete highly complex tasks in a fraction of the time humans would need. For some technology companies, building AI models is part-and-parcel of doing business. Think about behemoths like <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a></b>, <b>Alphabet</b>&#39;s Google, or even <b>Upstart</b>, which uses AI to originate loans for banks.</p><p>But that&#39;s not the case for most regular businesses. They don&#39;t have the financial resources, nor can they attract the specialized talent, to create technologies like AI in-house. That&#39;s the gap C3.ai fills by offering a suite of turnkey AI applications that can be customized to work within almost any industry in the world.</p><p>At 35%, the oil and gas sector is C3.ai&#39;s largest source of revenue. The sector is benefiting from AI models that help to reduce carbon emissions and predict costly equipment failures.</p><p>But the company is also recognized by some of the largest tech organizations in the world, including <b>Microsoft</b>, which is collaborating with C3.ai to accelerate the development of AI applications on its Azure cloud-services platform. So far, this partnership has led to over $200 million of new deals for the two companies.</p><h2>Strong revenue growth but explosive customer growth</h2><p>C3.ai isn&#39;t a profitable company yet, which is a key reason its stock has struggled, but it&#39;s doing all the right things to grow its business. Over time, it will likely achieve scale and deliver positive earnings per share. But for now, investors should be extremely excited about the company&#39;s performance based on other metrics.</p><p>It generated $92 million in revenue during fiscal 2019, and management expects the top line to reach $250 million in fiscal 2022. That represents 312% growth from its current price of $25.</p><p>But while Needham is the most bullish firm, it&#39;s certainly not alone. The consensus price target on Wall Street sits at $56.29, which is still more than double where the stock trades as of this writing.</p><p>Those price targets might actually be conservative over the long term with the artificial intelligence industry set to top $360 billion by 2028. How to Make Sense of the Move.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1188552613","media":"Barrons","summary":"AMC Entertainment‘s skyrocketing stock price would be easy to dismiss as just meme-trade madness, th","content":"<p>AMC Entertainment‘s skyrocketing stock price would be easy to dismiss as just meme-trade madness, that social media-fueled investor frenzy that has launched the likes of&nbsp;GameStop&nbsp;and&nbsp;BlackBerry&nbsp;into speculative territory.</p>\n<p>But it’s possible that traditional investors have missed a fundamental change in the movie theater business—and it wouldn’t be the first time.</p>\n<p>Shares of AMC (ticker: AMC) surged 23% on Tuesday, closing at $32.04—just off an all-time high of $36.72 set in late May. That puts the movie-theater chain’s market capitalization at roughly $16 billion, more than 15 times what it was in 2018, a record-breaking year at the box office.&nbsp;Shares were up another 34%, to $42.92, in premarket trading Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Even if investors missed an inflection point, though, the math doesn’t add up. The reason might be that market cap isn’t the right measure. Maybe it’s enterprise value, which is essentially market cap and debt. AMC’s enterprise value is about $26 billion, compared with $6.2 billion or so at the end of 2018.</p>\n<p>AMC added debt during the pandemic as theaters in the country’s biggest cities were dark for months. And the numbers make it easy to understand why: The U.S. box office in 2020 generated about $2.1 billion in ticket sales, down 81% from the 2018 record of $11.9 billion.</p>\n<p>So, it seems investors have been vexed by movie theater economics. But it wouldn’t be the first time. The industry essentially went belly up at the turn of the millennium. Regal Cinemas, for instance, declared bankruptcy in 2001.</p>\n<p>Back then, the industry had plenty of capacity because of a new theater design—stadium seating that gave a better view of the screen. That shift meant movie theater chains had to renovate or risk losing all their patrons to movie theaters that offered the better view. In the end, too many seats and not enough patrons meant the return on the stadium-seating investments never materialized.</p>\n<p>The upshot was consolidation. With fewer operators, the number of screens stabilized. Between 2002 and 2007, Regal Cinemas became a cash-generating machine because the stock was mispriced. The stock returned 21% a year on average. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both returned less than 9% a year on average over the same period.</p>\n<p>In those days, Regal Cinema’s enterprise value about $5 billion, or about 50% of total U.S. box office sales. That’s far short of AMC today. Something new has to be different for AMC to be worth it.</p>\n<p>Maybe the movie theater business is going to go through another period of consolidation, which can usher in another golden age of returns. AMC’s Tuesday gains, in fact, were catalyzed by new capital raised so the company could go on the offensive, acquiring defunct chains. Monopolies, after all, can be good for stock returns.</p>\n<p>If AMC can increase market share and the U.S. box office sales can return to 2018 levels in a few years, total sales at might be $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 amounted to $5.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Then, with better gross profit margins derived from larger scale, AMC might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually, which puts the stock at about a 4% free cash flow yield. The S&amp;P 500 trades for about a 3% free cash flow yield. The numbers can work—if they’re stretched.</p>\n<p>There are problems with this scenario, though. There are lots of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past. Arriving at $600 million in free cash flow is more about justifying current valuations than predicting what is likely.</p>\n<p>Also, with mergers and acquisitions, AMC market shares might rise, but there are still competitors. Regal Cinemas is still out there, owned by Cineworld Holdings (CINE. London). So is Cinemark (CNK). There’s not a true monopoly.</p>\n<p>AMC and its peers have to deal with streaming, too. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking. The pandemic has accelerated that. And if AMC gets too large and demanding for movie makers, the talent can always go to streaming faster, hurting box office sales.</p>\n<p>There is also the problem of the peer stocks. They aren’t trading like this is a brave new world for theaters. Cineworld stock is up 484% from its 52-week low, but shares are still off 72% from all-time highs. Cinemark shares are up 222% from their 52-week low. They are down 47% from their all-time high.</p>\n<p>AMC stock, again, is up almost 1,600% from its 52-week low and is down just 13% from its May all-time high.</p>\n<p>Wall Street just doesn’t see the potential either. Nine analysts cover the stock. The average analyst price target is about $5. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. But there were fewer shares back then. The old target enterprise value was roughly $7 billion. It’s tough to get from $7 billion to $26 billion predicting better margins.</p>\n<p>Analysts do have positive free cash flow modeled, though–$13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023. That puts the movie-theater chain’s market capitalization at roughly $16 billion, more than 15 times what it was in 2018, a record-breaking year at the box office. Shares were up another 34%, to $42.92, in premarket trading Wednesday.\nEven if investors missed an inflection point, though, the math doesn’t add up. The reason might be that market cap isn’t the right measure. Maybe it’s enterprise value, which is essentially market cap and debt. AMC’s enterprise value is about $26 billion, compared with $6.2 billion or so at the end of 2018.\nAMC added debt during the pandemic as theaters in the country’s biggest cities were dark for months. And the numbers make it easy to understand why: The U.S. box office in 2020 generated about $2.1 billion in ticket sales, down 81% from the 2018 record of $11.9 billion.\nSo, it seems investors have been vexed by movie theater economics. But it wouldn’t be the first time. The industry essentially went belly up at the turn of the millennium. Regal Cinemas, for instance, declared bankruptcy in 2001.\nBack then, the industry had plenty of capacity because of a new theater design—stadium seating that gave a better view of the screen. That shift meant movie theater chains had to renovate or risk losing all their patrons to movie theaters that offered the better view. In the end, too many seats and not enough patrons meant the return on the stadium-seating investments never materialized.\nThe upshot was consolidation. With fewer operators, the number of screens stabilized. Between 2002 and 2007, Regal Cinemas became a cash-generating machine because the stock was mispriced. The stock returned 21% a year on average. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both returned less than 9% a year on average over the same period.\nIn those days, Regal Cinema’s enterprise value about $5 billion, or about 50% of total U.S. box office sales. That’s far short of AMC today. Something new has to be different for AMC to be worth it.\nMaybe the movie theater business is going to go through another period of consolidation, which can usher in another golden age of returns. AMC’s Tuesday gains, in fact, were catalyzed by new capital raised so the company could go on the offensive, acquiring defunct chains. Monopolies, after all, can be good for stock returns.\nIf AMC can increase market share and the U.S. box office sales can return to 2018 levels in a few years, total sales at might be $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 amounted to $5.5 billion.\nThen, with better gross profit margins derived from larger scale, AMC might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually, which puts the stock at about a 4% free cash flow yield. The S&P 500 trades for about a 3% free cash flow yield. The numbers can work—if they’re stretched.\nThere are problems with this scenario, though. There are lots of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past. Arriving at $600 million in free cash flow is more about justifying current valuations than predicting what is likely.\nAlso, with mergers and acquisitions, AMC market shares might rise, but there are still competitors. Regal Cinemas is still out there, owned by Cineworld Holdings (CINE. London). So is Cinemark (CNK). There’s not a true monopoly.\nAMC and its peers have to deal with streaming, too. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking. The pandemic has accelerated that. And if AMC gets too large and demanding for movie makers, the talent can always go to streaming faster, hurting box office sales.\nThere is also the problem of the peer stocks. They aren’t trading like this is a brave new world for theaters. Cineworld stock is up 484% from its 52-week low, but shares are still off 72% from all-time highs. Cinemark shares are up 222% from their 52-week low. They are down 47% from their all-time high.\nAMC stock, again, is up almost 1,600% from its 52-week low and is down just 13% from its May all-time high.\nWall Street just doesn’t see the potential either. Nine analysts cover the stock. The average analyst price target is about $5. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. But there were fewer shares back then. The old target enterprise value was roughly $7 billion. It’s tough to get from $7 billion to $26 billion predicting better margins.\nAnalysts do have positive free cash flow modeled, though–$13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023.
