Departs","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1195005231","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Streaming revenue fails to counter shrinking cable TV incomeChairman warns of large-scale firings, c","content":"

Streaming revenue fails to counter shrinking cable TV income

Chairman warns of large-scale firings, cuts in every area

AMC Networks Inc., the home of popular TV shows like The Walking Dead, announced a layoff of one-fifth of its US workforce and the departure of its chief executive officer, becoming the latest media company rocked by cable television’s accelerating subscriber losses.

The New York-based company, which operates a suite of channels, disclosed the surprise departure of Christina Spade Tuesday after just three months on the job. In a memo to employees, Chairman James Dolan said the company has tried to grow its streaming business to replace the loss of cable-TV subscribers.

“It was our belief that cord-cutting losses would be offset by gains in streaming,” Dolan said. “This has not been the case.”

AMC Networks, a smaller channel operator, has been especially hard hit by the loss of viewers to streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, suffering declines in advertising and subscription revenue. In its latest quarter, sales shrank 16%. The company had 1,739 employees at the end of 2021.

In his memo, Dolan said the company plans “a large-scale layoff as well as cuts to every operating area.”

The board is finalizing a replacement for Spade. No reason was given for her departure. She is entitled to a severance of around $10 million, along with restricted stock units and other awards, according to a filing outlining her employment agreement.

“The news is a complete surprise,” said Doug Creutz, an analyst at Cowen & Co. With no apparent successor lined up, AMC shares will be under pressure until the company “can reassure investors that Spade’s exit was not related to any financial-related issues,” he said.

The change continues a leadership revolving door. AMC, known for its flagship cable channel, along with networks such as IFC and SundanceTV, had been run by Josh Sapan before a similarly sudden exit last year. Matt Blank served as interim CEO before Spade, who was previously chief operating officer and chief financial officer. She became chief executive in September.

Shares of AMC, which isn’t related to the similarly named theater chain, fell as much as 11% to $18.39 in New York. The stock had fallen 40% this year through Monday’s close, in line with other pay-TV stocks that have tumbled this year.

Falling Media Stocks

Cord cutting and losses in streaming have hammered media stocks

Turnover at the top adds to the challenges faced by AMC, which is shifting to the streaming age as cord cutters drop their cable packages.

While online subscriptions to AMC+ and the company’s other services jumped 44% last quarter from a year earlier to 11.1 million, total sales dropped. The forces weighing on AMC contributed to the downfall of Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek earlier this month.

Adding to AMC’s woes, one of its most popular programs just ended its run. In a memo to employees, Chairman James Dolan said the company has tried to grow its streaming business to replace the loss of cable-TV subscribers.“It was our belief that cord-cutting losses would be offset by gains in streaming,” Dolan said. “This has not been the case.”AMC Networks, a smaller channel operator, has been especially hard hit by the loss of viewers to streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, suffering declines in advertising and subscription revenue. In its latest quarter, sales shrank 16%. The company had 1,739 employees at the end of 2021.In his memo, Dolan said the company plans “a large-scale layoff as well as cuts to every operating area.”The board is finalizing a replacement for Spade. No reason was given for her departure. She is entitled to a severance of around $10 million, along with restricted stock units and other awards, according to a filing outlining her employment agreement.“The news is a complete surprise,” said Doug Creutz, an analyst at Cowen & Co. She became chief executive in September.Shares of AMC, which isn’t related to the similarly named theater chain, fell as much as 11% to $18.39 in New York. The stock had fallen 40% this year through Monday’s close, in line with other pay-TV stocks that have tumbled this year.Falling Media StocksCord cutting and losses in streaming have hammered media stocksTurnover at the top adds to the challenges faced by AMC, which is shifting to the streaming age as cord cutters drop their cable packages. While online subscriptions to AMC+ and the company’s other services jumped 44% last quarter from a year earlier to 11.1 million, total sales dropped. The forces weighing on AMC contributed to the downfall of Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek earlier this month.Adding to AMC’s woes, one of its most popular programs just ended its run. The Walking Dead zombie apocalypse show concluded its 11th and final season on Nov. 20, and the company, which also aired Mad Men and Breaking Bad, has struggled to find another hit of that scale.Three Walking Dead spinoffs are in the works, AMC said earlier this month. The company is also banking on a collection of programs based on the works of author Anne Rice, including Interview With the Vampire.AMC Networks is controlled by the Dolan family, one of the most influential in the cable-TV industry. Garden.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":711,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9962279125,"gmtCreate":1669793465767,"gmtModify":1676538244465,"author":{"id":"3584660223518204","authorId":"3584660223518204","name":"AndyCHLim","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2c4eda868ce4adf6302d8ee64c5bedb8","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584660223518204","authorIdStr":"3584660223518204"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Street’s “fea","content":"
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Even with U.S. stocks scaling record highs day after day and Wall Street’s “fear gauge” showing a low level of worry, some corners of the options market indicate investors are growing much more fearful of a sharp pullback than they have been in months.
\n
The Cboe Volatility Index, known as Wall Street’s fear gauge, is back near its post-pandemic lows, showing little investor dread of near-term stock market weakness. But other, less obvious measures are flashing red, indicating concerns that the market could be in for a large drop.
\n
It is unusually expensive, for instance, for investors to hedge their portfolios against a sharp decline in the S&P 500 than it is to buy options that would profit from a big gain.
\n
A put option hedging against a 10% drop in the S&P 500 by August is about 35 times as expensive as a call option that would profit from a 10% rise. Bloomberg report that, China considers turning tutoring companies into Non-Profits.\n\nChina is considering asking companies that offer tutoring on the school curriculum to go non-profit, according to people familiar with the matter, as part of a sweeping set of constraints that could decimate the country’s $100 billion education tech industry.\nIn rules currently being mulled, the platforms will likely no longer be allowed to raise capital or go public, the people said, asking to not be identified because the information is not public. Listed firms will also probably no longer be allowed to invest in or acquire education firms teaching school subjects while foreign capital will also be barred from the sector, one of the people said.\nLocal regulators will stop approving new after-school education firms seeking to offer tutoring on China’s compulsory syllabus and require extra scrutiny of existing online platforms, the people said. Vacation and weekend tutoring on school subjects will also be banned, they said. Changes may still occur as the rules haven’t been published. The 21st Century Business Herald earlier reported the bans on IPOs and investments by listed firms.\nThe new set of regulations, devised and overseen by a dedicated branch set up just last month to regulate the industry, could wipe out the enormous growth that made stock market darlings of TAL Education Group and Gaotu Techedu Inc. The regulatory assault mirrors a broader campaign against the growing heft of Chinese internet companies from Didi Global Inc. to Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.\n“Making the sector non-profit is just as good as eradicating the industry all together,” said Wu Yuefeng, a fund manager at Funding Capital Management (Beijing) Co. “The regulations on financing are a major surprise and shows that to the authorities, this is a matter of no small importance. In the short term for the sector, any news will be bad news.”\nNew Oriental Education & Technology Group sank as much as 50% in Hong Kong Friday, while Koolearn Technology Holding Ltd. tumbled 31%.\nBeijing is coming down hard on the sector as excessive tutoring anguishes young pupils and burdens parents with expensive tutoring fees. It’s also regarded as an impediment to one of the country’s top priorities, boosting a declining birth rate. Last month, China said it will allow a couple to have three children and released a slew of support measures to encourage births and lower child expenses.\nMaking the whole sector go non-profit “would make being a listed entity meaningless,” said Justin Tang, head of Asian research at United First Partners. “Investors are selling out first and asking questions later. It’s all being done to reduce cost of education and motivate citizens to raise kids.”\nEducation technology had emerged as one of the hottest investment plays in China in recent years, with $10 billion of venture capital money pouring into the sector last year alone. Alibaba, Tencent Holdings Ltd. and ByteDance Ltd. all entered the arena, seeking to capitalize on Chinese parents’ desires to give their children every academic advantage. A spokesman from the education ministry said relevant polices are still being formulated and declined to provide more details.\nBeijing is taking issue with for-profit companies for stressing out kids while enriching investors and startup founders. In May, President Xi Jinping chaired a meeting with top officials where they approved a new set of rules to ease the burden of homework and after-school training for primary and secondary school students.\nLast month, China’s education ministry created a dedicated division to oversee all private education platforms for the first time. That followed a plethora of restrictions, including caps on fees firms can charge and time limits on after-school programs. Regulators have fined two of the biggest startups for false advertising: Alibaba-backed Zuoyebang and Tencent-investee Yuanfudao. A new law on minor protection, which went into effect June 1, also bans kindergarten and private institutions from teaching the primary-school curriculum to pre-schoolers -- not uncommon previously.\nSeveral high-profile startups in the sector -- including Yuanfudao, which at $15.5 billion is the most valuable of the lot -- are likely to have to put initial public offering plans on hold because of the crackdown.\nShares of China’s largest private education companies are among the world’s worst performers in recent months, with New Oriental Education, TAL Education and Gaotu Techedu together shedding nearly $100 billion of value from their highs reached earlier this year.\nGaotu, New Oriental, Zuoyebang, Yuanfudao and TAL didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":382,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3584660223518204","authorId":"3584660223518204","name":"AndyCHLim","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2c4eda868ce4adf6302d8ee64c5bedb8","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3584660223518204","idStr":"3584660223518204"},"content":"thank for the like","text":"thank for the like","html":"thank for the like"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":176924522,"gmtCreate":1626856092266,"gmtModify":1703479364363,"author":{"id":"3584660223518204","authorId":"3584660223518204","name":"AndyCHLim","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2c4eda868ce4adf6302d8ee64c5bedb8","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3584660223518204","idStr":"3584660223518204"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/176924522","repostId":"1156292040","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":215,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":162807266,"gmtCreate":1624053889355,"gmtModify":1703827580516,"author":{"id":"3584660223518204","authorId":"3584660223518204","name":"AndyCHLim","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2c4eda868ce4adf6302d8ee64c5bedb8","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3584660223518204","idStr":"3584660223518204"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like......","listText":"Like......","text":"Like......","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":5,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/162807266","repostId":"2144774740","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2144774740","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"The leading daily newsletter for the latest financial and business news. 33Yrs Helping Stock Investors with Investing Insights, Tools, News & More.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Investors","id":"1085713068","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/608dd68a89ed486e18f64efe3136266c"},"pubTimestamp":1624030096,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2144774740?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-18 23:28","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Adobe Getting Lift From Economic Reopening Post-Pandemic","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2144774740","media":"Investors","summary":"Software giant Adobe is benefiting as the economy reopens following the Covid-19 pandemic, a senior executive says.","content":"
Software giant Adobe is benefiting as the economy reopens as the Covid-19 pandemic wanes, a senior executive says. In thisMotley Fool Livevideorecorded on June 9, Motley Fool contributors Keith Speights and Brian Orelli discuss one reason why Biogen isn't a buy after its key FDA victory.
\n
Keith Speights:Let's segue then to the obvious question here. The question that a lot of investors are asking now is, \"Should I buy Biogen stock after this big FDA approval for its Alzheimer's disease drug?\" Brian, what should investors be factoring in to their decision making process right now? What's your take on whether or not Biogen is a buy right now?
\n
Brian Orelli:From a valuation standpoint, it's easy to look at historical data and see where they've been trading. I tend to look at price-to-sales just because drug companies, if you use the earnings, it's a little more difficult because they have a lot of one-time events and acquisitions and things like that and licensing deals that throw off their GAAP earnings. Then if you're looking at historical earnings, they usually don't back those out, so I use price-to-sales as a metric.
\n
Biogen is trading at least after Monday's, after Monday's jump, it was at 4.9 price-to-sales ratio. Last time it traded at that level was in the 2018, 2019 time frame, and at that point, revenue was hovering around 10% growth.
\n
To justify this price-to-sales ratio, you have to expect that sales are going to grow by 10% per year. Revenue was $13.45 billion in 2020. You need to get to $14.8 billion to get to that 10% growth. Guidance for next year is for it to drop to $10.45 billion to $10.75 billion, and they had already factored in modest revenue from Aduhelm in 2021.
\n
At the high end, Biogen needs $4 billion in sales to justify the current valuation. Four billion would be completely reasonable for an Alzheimer's disease drug, and $10 billion would probably be reasonable, but that would be a drug that actually helps patients. As we've said, there's not enough data to know whether Aduhelm actually helps patients.
\n
Medicare, they've got the drug approved so that's good, but they need to get the doctors to prescribe it, and they need to get insurers to cover it. Medicare will probably cover it, but it's an infused product and that means it's covered under Medicare Part B, B as in boy, not D as in drugs. In thisMotley Fool Livevideorecorded on June 9, Motley Fool contributors Keith Speights and Brian Orelli discuss one reason why Biogen isn't a buy after its key FDA victory.\nKeith Speights:Let's segue then to the obvious question here. The question that a lot of investors are asking now is, \"Should I buy Biogen stock after this big FDA approval for its Alzheimer's disease drug?\" Brian, what should investors be factoring in to their decision making process right now? What's your take on whether or not Biogen is a buy right now?\nBrian Orelli:From a valuation standpoint, it's easy to look at historical data and see where they've been trading. I tend to look at price-to-sales just because drug companies, if you use the earnings, it's a little more difficult because they have a lot of one-time events and acquisitions and things like that and licensing deals that throw off their GAAP earnings. Then if you're looking at historical earnings, they usually don't back those out, so I use price-to-sales as a metric.\nBiogen is trading at least after Monday's, after Monday's jump, it was at 4.9 price-to-sales ratio. Last time it traded at that level was in the 2018, 2019 time frame, and at that point, revenue was hovering around 10% growth.\nTo justify this price-to-sales ratio, you have to expect that sales are going to grow by 10% per year. Revenue was $13.45 billion in 2020. You need to get to $14.8 billion to get to that 10% growth. Guidance for next year is for it to drop to $10.45 billion to $10.75 billion, and they had already factored in modest revenue from Aduhelm in 2021.\nAt the high end, Biogen needs $4 billion in sales to justify the current valuation. Four billion would be completely reasonable for an Alzheimer's disease drug, and $10 billion would probably be reasonable, but that would be a drug that actually helps patients. As we've said, there's not enough data to know whether Aduhelm actually helps patients.\nMedicare, they've got the drug approved so that's good, but they need to get the doctors to prescribe it, and they need to get insurers to cover it. Medicare will probably cover it, but it's an infused product and that means it's covered under Medicare Part B, B as in boy, not D as in drugs. That comes with a 20% copay after reaching the deductible. We're talking about $10,000 for the patients they're going to have to pay on the drug. That's going to really limit sales.\nIf you want to look at it at a different way, if you assume the valuation already factors in the fall to around $10.5 billion and then you are looking for 10% growth from there, now you only need $1 billion or so in sales to justify that growth. Maybe that seems a little more doable, but then that assumes that the revenue from the multiple sclerosis drugs, Tecfidera and Rituxan, that are causing the drop this year, and that you have to assume that's going to just stop.\nI don't think that's going to stop, so that means either they're going to generate more than $1 billion to justify 10% growth from 2021-2022. The stock market at large sank sharply in January, sending the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT:SPY) down 9% before recovering slightly in the last two days of the month. When the stock market sinks as quickly as it did, many investors turn pessimistic and worry about high-quality companies -- a mistake that could be costly in 10 years.

Many analysts, however, stand firm with their conviction through these downward times. Credit Suisse's (NYSE:CS) Stephen Ju has a price target of $2,200 for MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI), which implies 94% upside from today's prices. JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) analyst Anna Lizzul has an even brighter outlook on fuboTV (NYSE:FUBO) over the next year with a price target of $28, implying 161% upside. While long-term investors should be focused on three to five years into the future, it's worth looking at some companies that analysts think could perform well in 2022.

A growth story still in the early stages

MercadoLibre has found its place in Latin America as one of the largest logistics, e-commerce, and digital payments companies. The company has almost 79 million active users -- representing 12% of the Latin American population -- and it controls 37% of all logistics orders in Latin America, including 65% of Mexico's logistics space.

Now that MercadoLibre has taken control of these markets in the region, it isn't sitting back on its heels. The company is still looking to grow more and continue innovating, leading to continued hypergrowth, even as a $57 billion company. In third-quarter 2021, the company saw revenue grow 73% year over year to $1.9 billion and net income grow 535% to $95 million.

This growth has been partly due to MercadoLibre's innovative endeavors, like Mercado Credito, which offers credit cards and loans to merchants. MercadoLibre recently made another potentially lucrative endeavor in crypto. The company made investments in two Latin American platforms focused on bringing cryptocurrency adoption to the region: MercadoBitcoin.com, a leading crypto exchange, and Paxos, a platform that allows consumers to buy, sell, and hold crypto.

Despite these forward-looking investments, many investors think that they missed the boat with MercadoLibre, considering it is up over 3,870% since coming public in 2007. However, there is still plenty of room left for it to grow, even in its core business. No Latin American country has large e-commerce adoption yet, with less than 13.5% of its retail sales being e-commerce orders. However, e-commerce is growing rapidly in the region. Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico saw 21% to 26% year-over-year growth in e-commerce sales in 2021, implying that while e-commerce is still relatively small, it is seeing major adoption in the region.

MercadoLibre is a market leader in Latin America with significant shares in all three parts of its business, yet shares are down 42% from their all-time highs. With the increasing prevalence of e-commerce, digital finance, and the internet broadly going forward, I think that MercadoLibre will have tons of room to continue dominating in the region as a leader, which is why I think it has tons of upside for both next year and beyond.

A different streaming service

Consumers in the U.S. and around the world are cutting the cord. In 2021, there were 48 million U.S. households without cable, compared to 79 million with it. However, this is expected to change by 2023, with 56 million households without cable compared to just 73 million. The trend of how consumers pay for their television is changing drastically, and it has been for years, but one thing that has held many people up is the inability to get live sports and news with streaming services like Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). Few streaming services focus on providing all-encompassing streaming for live television, except for fuboTV.

With fuboTV being one of the only services focusing solely on this important aspect of TV, it has seen major adoption. The company announced preliminary fourth-quarter results -- which are not confirmed or audited, but rather updated guidance -- and reported nothing but strength. Its subscriber base is expected to reach 1.1 million users, which is growth of 100% year over year and 16% sequentially. More importantly, the company is expecting its subscriber base to churn less. It estimates that its churn rate will improve by 200 basis points compared to the year-ago period.

This major growth will likely continue, especially among soccer fans. The company recently announced that it gained exclusive rights to the UEFA European Championship, which includes the 2024 and 2028 Euros -- a major competition in the world of European soccer. While the company is not profitable today -- it lost $106 million in Q3 2021 -- this has been decreasing and will likely keep improving as fuboTV sees continued growth. I think that fuboTV could thrive and enable millions of users to cut the cord across America, making the company potentially a great investment over the next decade.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2 Growth Stocks With 94% to 161% Upside, According to Wall Street
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2 Growth Stocks With 94% to 161% Upside, According to Wall Street\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-02-03 23:03 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Long-term investors should not give too much consideration to short-term price movements, but January was certainly a rocky ride for many investors. They also plan to fund enhanced enforcement by the IRS, in order to crack down on people who underpay or cheat on their taxes.\nAnother piece of the pay-for equation will be new methane reduction and polluter import fees, to raise revenue and accelerate emissions reductions.\nSenators reached an agreement on the topline number of $3.5 trillion on Tuesday night, but details about the contents of the bill were not released until Wednesday.\nNext steps\nThe next phase of the legislative process will be to fill in the budget framework with details, a process that takes place in the Senate Budget Committee.\nThe chairman of this committee is Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who proposed his own $6 trillion budget resolution plan earlier this summer.\nBut Sanders’ $6 trillion plan was far too costly for centrist Democrats to support, and the current $3.5 trillion bill represents an effort to bridge these internal divisions.\nThe budget resolution also contains a key provision that Sanders has long championed but which was not included in Biden’s original American Families Plan: full Medicare coverage for vision, dental and hearing care.\n“This is, in our view, a pivotal moment in American history,” Sanders told reporters Tuesday.\nIf ultimately signed into law, the bill would mark the biggest expansion of the social safety net in decades, along with an unprecedented effort to curb climate change and prepare the country for its effects.\nIt was not clear Wednesday when the budget resolution bill will receive its first vote in the Senate.\nThe timing of the bill is complicated by the fact that it is working its way through Congress hand-in-hand with another bill, a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure proposal that is still being drafted.\nSenate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wants to hold votes on both the budget resolution and the infrastructure bill before the Senate breaks for its planned August recess.\nOn Monday, Schumer told senators to be ready to remain in Washington for part of the upcoming recess in order to pass both measures.\nSchumer’s timeline for the next few weeks is very ambitious, especially considering that neither of the two massive bills Democrats intend to pass have actually been written yet.\nSeveral centrist Democrats have indicated that they want to pass the infrastructure bill before they cast a vote for the budget resolution bill.\nBut progressives, who strongly support the budget resolution, want the exact opposite: proof that their ambitious budget bill can pass before they agree to join centrist Democrats and Republicans in approving the watered-down infrastructure plan.\nDemocrats hold only a one-vote majority in the Senate, so both bills will need the support of every Democratic senator in order to pass.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":283,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9015911623,"gmtCreate":1649407511885,"gmtModify":1676534507372,"author":{"id":"3584660223518204","authorId":"3584660223518204","name":"AndyCHLim","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2c4eda868ce4adf6302d8ee64c5bedb8","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3584660223518204","idStr":"3584660223518204"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9015911623","repostId":"1114303542","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1114303542","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1649406944,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1114303542?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-08 16:35","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Hot Chinese ADRs Gained in Premarket Trading","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1114303542","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Alibaba, Pinduoduo, JD.com, Baidu, Bilibili, iQIYI, DiDi, Nio, and Li Auto climbed between 1% and 4%","content":"

Alibaba, Pinduoduo, JD.com, Baidu, Bilibili, iQIYI, DiDi, Nio, and Li Auto climbed between 1% and 4%.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; That will be on full display th","content":"

Inflation has become as much a political problem as an economic one. That will be on full display this week as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell heads to Capitol Hill.

Powell will deliver the central bank’s semiannual monetary-policy report to the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday, one week after the Fed initiated the biggest interest-rate increase in about three decades. Expect legislators to focus on the trajectory of inflation and the odds of a recession, and demand more clarity on the Fed’s long-range projections.

The Fed offered mixed guidance on June 15 in announcing an increase in the federal funds rate of 75 basis points, or three-quarters of a percentage point, to a targeted rate of 1.50%-1.75%. According to CME FedWatch, the market is expecting about two percentage points of additional rate hikes as the Fed struggles to contain and suppress inflation.

Whether that degree of monetary tightening actually happens will depend as much on politics and the markets as the economy, says Christopher Wood, global head of equity strategy at Jefferies. “At some point in coming months the focus of vote-seeking American politicians is likely to switch from worrying about the need to be seen to be doing something about inflation to worrying about the impact of monetary tightening on Americans’ 401(k) plans,” he says.

Expect Powell’s comments to be parsed in light of these conflicting concerns. Here’s a guide.

Inflation

Rising prices are making consumers increasingly miserable. If fact, they’re as glum as they’ve ever been, according to the University of Michigan’s latest sentiment survey, which was launched in 1978.

Expect Republican members of Congress to hammer the inflation issue, pointing to stimulus spending by the Biden Administration, in addition to energy policies that have reduced supply. Expect Democratic members to remind viewers that stimulus spending in response to the pandemic began under the Trump administration.

Quickly rising prices have an outsize impact on lower-income households, especially because inflation is most acute today in basics such as food, gas, and rent. While many lower-income households traditionally voted for Democrats, the party is in an awkward position because it has been unable to pass legislation to help struggling consumers. More government spending arguably would exacerbate inflation by further juicing demand. Yet, attempting to cool prices via tighter monetary policy is raising the cost of credit at a time when more households are using plastic to pay for essentials.

Powell will get many questions about inflation. Look for updated answers on these. Is inflation peaking? Can inflation sufficiently cool as the war in Ukraine continues to push energy prices higher? How long will it be before inflation falls back to the Fed’s 2% target, and is there a possibility that the target is lifted to 3%-4%?

What else can be done to relieve inflation pressure, especially since monetary policy works with a lag of about a year? What can the federal government do to help families and businesses without adding to the problem? How can policymakers focus on core inflation, which backs out food and energy, at a time when those categories are causing the most pain?

Recession

Many officials might see a political advantage in bigger and faster monetary-policy tightening. For Republicans, more painful rate increases and balance-sheet tightening might make midterm elections easier to win. (Voters go to the polls on Nov. 8). Some on the other side of the aisle might also prefer front-loaded tightening in the hope that inflation is cured and the economy is on the upswing by the 2024 presidential election.

There is a long time between now and November, but the political will to tighten aggressively would mean the odds of a recession are higher than they may already appear. Many Wall Street economists and the Fed itself have said for months that a recession can be avoided, but that thinking is starting to change. Consider a Wall Street Journal poll that shows 44% of economists surveyed now expect a recession within the next 12 months; that number is nearly double the share in April and up from just 18% in January. As EY-Parthenon Chief Economist Greg Daco puts it, a recession is likely in the coming months as persistent inflation forces more pronounced monetary-policy tightening.

Expect Powell to get questions around the likelihood and severity of a recession. U.S. economic growth was negative in the first quarter, and activity is flagging in the second quarter, even before the impact of the June fed-funds increase kicks in. Plus, the second part of this tightening cycle, the Fed’s attempt to shrink its balance sheet after trillions of dollars in pandemic bond purchases, is just getting started.

After going from “soft” to “softish” and then to “bumpy” and involving “some pain” to describe the economy’s prospective landing, Powell seemed to acknowledge last week that the path to a soft landing is getting harder. He has pointed to the strong labor market as reason to believe a recession isn’t inevitable, but that is a lagging indicator.

Economic projections

When the Fed concluded its latest policy meeting last week, it issued its quarterly summary of economic projections, or SEP. While there were substantial changes from the March SEP, the latest forecasts still look too rosy. They also don’t add up.For example, the Fed predicted enough of a rise in unemployment to trigger a recession, and it predicted growth close to trend through 2024. How can the Fed see inflation within striking distance of its 2% target by 2024 without pushing unemployment higher than about 4%? Perhaps some in Congress will ask that.

Consider what former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said in a speech over the weekend, after tellingBarron’slast week that the Fed’s forecasts were still unrealistic. The U.S. will need five years of unemployment at 6% to contain inflation—or two years of joblessness at 7.5%, or one year of unemployment at 10%, Summers said, according to press reports. The unemployment rate is currently 3.6%.

Powell will reiterate the Fed’s commitment to battling inflation, but the Fed’s latest forecasts undercut that message. Mixed messaging is tied in part to the fact that inflation is rising as growth is already slowing, whereas rising inflation usually comes with stronger growth.

Powell may attempt this week to square some of the incongruous Fed forecasts. Something has to give, and investors want to know if it will be more unemployment and falling growth, or high inflation for longer. The chance is rising that inflation will stay high and the economy will have little to no growth for a while, with more economists talking about a stretch of stagflation before recession.

Terminal rate

The Fed chair may also be questioned about the so-called terminal rate, or where the main policy rate will peak in this cycle. The latest SEP showed a terminal rate of about 3.75%, notes Roberto Perli, head of global policy at Piper Sandler. That level is below what markets and many economists expect. Yet it is also well above any reasonable definition of neutral, even taking into account that inflation expectations will be higher than normal for a while, says Perli.

“History tells us that tightening above neutral rarely ends well. So, at some point it’s legitimate to expect a deterioration in the labor market, and at that point the Fed tone will change significantly,” he says.

This is week is too soon for Powell to change his tone, but investors should look for clues as to when the Fed will become more concerned with growth numbers than inflation numbers, which will help determine when and at what level tightening will peak.

","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Fed’s Powell Goes to Capitol Hill Today. Perhaps some in Congress will ask that.Consider what former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said in a speech over the weekend, after tellingBarron’slast week that the Fed’s forecasts were still unrealistic. The U.S. will need five years of unemployment at 6% to contain inflation—or two years of joblessness at 7.5%, or one year of unemployment at 10%, Summers said, according to press reports. The unemployment rate is currently 3.6%.Powell will reiterate the Fed’s commitment to battling inflation, but the Fed’s latest forecasts undercut that message. Mixed messaging is tied in part to the fact that inflation is rising as growth is already slowing, whereas rising inflation usually comes with stronger growth.Powell may attempt this week to square some of the incongruous Fed forecasts. Something has to give, and investors want to know if it will be more unemployment and falling growth, or high inflation for longer. The chance is rising that inflation will stay high and the economy will have little to no growth for a while, with more economists talking about a stretch of stagflation before recession.Terminal rateThe Fed chair may also be questioned about the so-called terminal rate, or where the main policy rate will peak in this cycle. The latest SEP showed a terminal rate of about 3.75%, notes Roberto Perli, head of global policy at Piper Sandler. That level is below what markets and many economists expect. Yet it is also well above any reasonable definition of neutral, even taking into account that inflation expectations will be higher than normal for a while, says Perli.“History tells us that tightening above neutral rarely ends well. So, at some point it’s legitimate to expect a deterioration in the labor market, and at that point the Fed tone will change significantly,” he says. This is week is too soon for Powell to change his tone, but investors should look for clues as to when the Fed will become more concerned with growth numbers than inflation numbers, which will help determine when and at what level tightening will peak.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":92,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":125978785,"gmtCreate":1624644864547,"gmtModify":1703842740387,"author":{"id":"3584660223518204","authorId":"3584660223518204","name":"AndyCHLim","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2c4eda868ce4adf6302d8ee64c5bedb8","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3584660223518204","idStr":"3584660223518204"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/125978785","repostId":"1197793973","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1197793973","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1624632519,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1197793973?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-25 22:48","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Express rose more than 18% in morning trading","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1197793973","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"(June 25) Express rose more than 18% in morning trading.\n\nPenny Stocks: Express, Inc.
