Apple’s own payment system takes a 30% cut from large developers.</p>\n<p>Data from the app tracker SensorTower shows that in calendar 2020, Apple had overall revenue from the App Store of $72.3 billion, generating an estimated $21.7 billion in fees, or about 7% of Apple’s overall revenues. On the other hand, buying shares early in a company's lifecycle can offer the highest potential for gains if the business succeeds.</p>\n<p>Of course, each stock and each company is different, and some come with higher risks -- and higher possible upsides. <b>Lemonade</b> (NYSE:LMND) and <b>Upstart</b> (NASDAQ:UPST) offer huge potential for growth, but both seem quite risky as investments right now.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F643564%2Fa-man-and-a-child-in-a-kitchen-holding-cut-lemons-over-their-eyes.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"454\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Customers who love their insurance provider</h3>\n<p>Yes, such people do exist. Digital insurance company Lemonade opened its doors with the intention to \"delight its customers\" with an easy, quick process that's (almost) entirely online. That was a big departure from the model used by traditional insurance companies, which hasn't changed too much in the past century.</p>\n<p>Lemonade keeps a set percentage of the fees from every policy it sells and cedes the rest to its reinsurers. It also donates any leftover funds from each year's premium payments to charities of the customers' choosing. This eliminates a key conflict of interest inherent in standard insurance claims. Other insurers are incentivized to deny customers' claims, but Lemonade is not, because denying claims doesn't increase its profits.</p>\n<p>The company has more than a million customers, and most of its metrics demonstrate strong growth. In the second quarter, its gross earned premium, or total premiums, increased by 90% year over year. Premium per customer increased 29%, and in-force premium (customers multiplied by average premium per customer) grew by 91%. Revenue growth wasn't as strong, but its shifting arrangements with reinsurers have complicated how that metric should be viewed.</p>\n<p>This is a company that has tremendous potential. But the main thorn in its side has been its loss ratio. The loss ratio is the percentage of its premiums that an insurer pays out in claims, so shareholders will want it to be trending down. And Lemonade's loss ratio was decreasing, but in the first quarter, it shot up to 121% due to the catastrophic Texas Freeze. The metric shifted back into its normal territory in the second quarter, although it was up 7% year over year.</p>\n<p>The other major issue for potential investors is that Lemonade isn't profitable. As it has been expanding, adding new types of policies and entering new markets, its losses have widened. Now, it's investing millions in its auto insurance launch, which will take a toll on the bottom line. And marketing its relatively new products is a necessary expense on the road to growth, but that too, is helping keep it in the red for now.</p>\n<p>These are the kinds of hurdles that Lemonade will have to surmount as it grows. Its potential upside is huge, but the high risks can't be ignored. In the meantime, its strategy of marketing itself to younger customers and growing with them as their insurance needs grow is working -- a fact reflected in the accelerating growth of its premium per customer metric.</p>\n<p>There's a lot to like here, but Lemonade will take time to show progress. The company went public in December with little fanfare, but as of this writing, it's up by nearly 1,000% from its first-day closing price.</p>\n<p>There's a reason for investors' enthusiasm. Upstart provides an artificial-intelligence-powered platform that banks can use to assess customers' credit risk. By using this model, which bases its results on thousands of data points, as an alternative to the traditional risk scores that essentially place customers in boxes, banks can make better lending decisions, loaning out more money with less risk. It's also fast and easy, with 71% of loans approved on the spot. It's easy to see why that's attractive, and why Upstart is growing like a weed.</p>\n<p>In the second quarter, its revenue increased more than 1,000% year over year. Loans originated through the platform increased more than 1,600%, and net income was $37 million compared to a loss of $6.2 million in the prior-year period. And management expects more growth in the third quarter, forecasting that sales will increase by between 225% and 240%. year over year</p>\n<p>Unlike Lemonade, Upstart is showing strong growth all around. The main risk for new investors here is valuation. If Lemonade sounds expensive at a P/S ratio of 45, consider that Upstart is trading at a P/S ratio of 54. It could take some time for the business to grow into that valuation, and in the meantime, any negative news could send the share price down. On the other hand, buying shares early in a company's lifecycle can offer the highest potential for gains if the business succeeds.\nOf course, each stock and each company is different, and some come with higher risks -- and higher possible upsides. Lemonade (NYSE:LMND) and Upstart (NASDAQ:UPST) offer huge potential for growth, but both seem quite risky as investments right now.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nCustomers who love their insurance provider\nYes, such people do exist. Digital insurance company Lemonade opened its doors with the intention to \"delight its customers\" with an easy, quick process that's (almost) entirely online. That was a big departure from the model used by traditional insurance companies, which hasn't changed too much in the past century.\nLemonade keeps a set percentage of the fees from every policy it sells and cedes the rest to its reinsurers. It also donates any leftover funds from each year's premium payments to charities of the customers' choosing. This eliminates a key conflict of interest inherent in standard insurance claims. Other insurers are incentivized to deny customers' claims, but Lemonade is not, because denying claims doesn't increase its profits.\nThe company has more than a million customers, and most of its metrics demonstrate strong growth. In the second quarter, its gross earned premium, or total premiums, increased by 90% year over year. Premium per customer increased 29%, and in-force premium (customers multiplied by average premium per customer) grew by 91%. Revenue growth wasn't as strong, but its shifting arrangements with reinsurers have complicated how that metric should be viewed.\nThis is a company that has tremendous potential. But the main thorn in its side has been its loss ratio. The loss ratio is the percentage of its premiums that an insurer pays out in claims, so shareholders will want it to be trending down. And Lemonade's loss ratio was decreasing, but in the first quarter, it shot up to 121% due to the catastrophic Texas Freeze. The metric shifted back into its normal territory in the second quarter, although it was up 7% year over year.\nThe other major issue for potential investors is that Lemonade isn't profitable. As it has been expanding, adding new types of policies and entering new markets, its losses have widened. Now, it's investing millions in its auto insurance launch, which will take a toll on the bottom line. And marketing its relatively new products is a necessary expense on the road to growth, but that too, is helping keep it in the red for now.\nThese are the kinds of hurdles that Lemonade will have to surmount as it grows. Its potential upside is huge, but the high risks can't be ignored. In the meantime, its strategy of marketing itself to younger customers and growing with them as their insurance needs grow is working -- a fact reflected in the accelerating growth of its premium per customer metric.\nThere's a lot to like here, but Lemonade will take time to show progress. The company went public in December with little fanfare, but as of this writing, it's up by nearly 1,000% from its first-day closing price.\nThere's a reason for investors' enthusiasm. Upstart provides an artificial-intelligence-powered platform that banks can use to assess customers' credit risk. By using this model, which bases its results on thousands of data points, as an alternative to the traditional risk scores that essentially place customers in boxes, banks can make better lending decisions, loaning out more money with less risk. It's also fast and easy, with 71% of loans approved on the spot. It's easy to see why that's attractive, and why Upstart is growing like a weed.\nIn the second quarter, its revenue increased more than 1,000% year over year. Loans originated through the platform increased more than 1,600%, and net income was $37 million compared to a loss of $6.2 million in the prior-year period. And management expects more growth in the third quarter, forecasting that sales will increase by between 225% and 240%. year over year\nUnlike Lemonade, Upstart is showing strong growth all around. The main risk for new investors here is valuation. If Lemonade sounds expensive at a P/S ratio of 45, consider that Upstart is trading at a P/S ratio of 54. It could take some time for the business to grow into that valuation, and in the meantime, any negative news could send the share price down. With about 10% of a business&#39;s budget typically spent on advertising, The Trade Desk is in a prime market.</p><p>Back in November 2021, The Trade Desk reported an excellent third quarter. Its revenue growth accelerated from 32% to 39% when compared the year-ago quarter. Net income (yes, actual un-adjusted profits) rose even quicker at 44% at a 20% margin. For the seventh year in a row, more than 95% of customers were retained, showcasing the platform&#39;s stickiness.</p><p>Looking forward to The Trade Desk&#39;s fourth-quarter earnings, the company projected $388 million in revenue which would equate to 21% revenue growth. While this would mark a deceleration of revenue growth, growing profitably at more than a 20% clip makes The Trade Desk a safe stock to grab almost down almost 50% from its all-time high.</p><h2>Procore</h2><p>Construction is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the last industries touched by the digital revolution. Until recently, technology hadn&#39;t advanced enough for the internet and hardware to be usable on job sites. Now, all involved parties -- like contractors, engineers, and project owners -- can be informed on progress through a single platform provided by Procore.</p><p>Additionally, it ensures everyone is on the same page. For example, the owner could request a building change, the engineer or architect then updates the drawings, and the modification is passed to the contractor through Procore. The old method of processing changes through paper and pencil is slow and causes $500 billion in rework expenses globally, according to the company.</p><p>Procore&#39;s solution is seeing gradual adoption, as the construction industry is notorious for resisting change. However, Procore still grew its Q3 revenue 30% over the last year to $132 million. Additionally, it is rolling out its platform into Germany and France, which will expand Procore&#39;s reach.</p><p>Net customer adds increased 4% to more than 11,605 customers over the second quarter&#39;s count. Plus, for those interested in the long haul, 85% of accredited construction management programs teach Procore&#39;s platform at the university level. Tomorrow&#39;s construction management leaders are learning and using the program, and this bodes well for the future of the company.</p><h2>Cloudflare</h2><p>The internet has expanded into something its creators never anticipated. Cloudflare&#39;s products usher in a new age for speed, security, and reliability. Instead of bulky on-premise hardware, Cloudflare connects its users to the internet through the cloud, a hybrid approach, or still on-premise if the customer desires.</p><p>Cloudflare&#39;s operations aren&#39;t small; it has over 132,000 paying customers and 1,260 of those pay more than $100,000 annually. Its dollar-based net retention rate -- which measures how much customers spent this quarter versus last year -- was 124% in Q3, up from 116% last year. Total revenue grew 51% quarter over quarter, in line with its five-year compound annual growth rate of 50% dating back to 2016. Total revenue increased 48% to $4.6 billion, driven by that customer growth as well as 23% higher revenue per active customer.</p><p>Couang has increased customer spending by adding services to its online marketplace and expanding its delivery infrastructure. These include Coupang Eats (a food delivery service that was <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the top two downloaded apps in South Korea last year) and Rocket Fresh (same-day grocery delivery).</p><p>All these services have required major capital investments with eight million square feet of infrastructure space added and $506 million in capital expenditures through the first nine months of this year. These investments are costly, but they should insulate Coupang from competition that cannot match the scale of its end-to-end delivery network.</p><p>With a market cap of about $38 billion as of this writing and an impressive track record of top-line growth, Coupang could be a great technology stock to buy now and hold for the long haul. Plus, with its price-to-sales valuation falling to just 2.2, the lowest level in the company&#39;s brief history on the market, the stock trades at a bargain valuation relative to its growth potential.</p><h2>Autodesk</h2><p>Unlike Coupang, which is trying to build out a technological advantage that combines the physical and digital worlds, Autodesk solely operates in the software realm. However, its customers are the designers and builders of a lot of the physical infrastructure and real estate around the globe.</p><p>At its core, Autodesk provides software for people and corporations that build things. This includes designers and architects, who use its Revit and AutoCAD products; engineers of all types, who use software like Fusion 360; and increasingly, construction workers, who employ the Autodesk Construction Cloud. The company also has a small media and entertainment division that sells 3D animation and visual effects software.</p><p>Autodesk is riding a few major trends around the world. The first is building information modeling (BIM), a new standard of keeping all relevant information for a building (among other things) in a software program. Revit, Autodesk&#39;s biggest product, is the clear leader in this category. The BIM industry is expected to grow at close to 4% through 2028, which will fuel sales for Revit.</p><p>The company is also benefiting from the growth of digitization and cloud collaboration in the engineering, construction, and infrastructure markets. As a trusted COVID-19 vaccine developer, we could be witnessing a shift to recurring revenue for Moderna.</p>\n<p>However, with no other products on pharmacy shelves and a $152 billion market cap, my personal belief is that billionaires are potentially playing with fire by piling into Moderna. This is a broad mandate but can be very useful for large organizations that have so many data points coming in daily. It only has 169 customers as of the end of the second quarter, but these customers are spending millions with Palantir each year.</p>\n<p>In the second quarter, total revenue grew 49% year over year to $376 million, with U.S. commercial revenue up 90% from 2020. Palantir closed 62 deals of $1 million or higher, including 21 deals north of $10 million. Clearly, organizations are finding value with the Palantir platform. Palantir is also profitable, with $233 million in adjusted operating income in the first half of this year. Investors have a lot of visibility into Palantir's future quarters, with total future deal value increasing 63% through the first half of 2021 to $3.4 billion.</p>\n<p>Palantir stock is expensive, with a market cap of $52 billion versus only $1.3 billion in revenue over the past 12 months. However, if you believe that most large organizations across the globe will use Palantir's data insights, while also factoring in the high amount of future revenue already booked, Palantir's revenue and profits could be much higher a few years from now. This makes the stock a lot smarter to own than other meme stocks.</p>\n<h3>2. Upstart Holdings</h3>\n<p>Upstart, like Palantir, is an artificial intelligence (AI)-focused company. But instead of serving large organizations, it is focused on the consumer lending market. The company has invented a better way to price loan default risk with consumers than traditional credit scores. It then partners with banks as a digital layer between them and the consumer, helping banks improve loss ratios and consumers get more fair access to loans. Upstart takes on minimal lending risks itself.</p>\n<p>So far, Upstart's loan technology seems to be catching on extremely quickly. In the second quarter, total revenue grew 1,018% to $194 million, which shows how much banks are starting to use Upstart's lending algorithm. Upstart's bank partners originated 287,000 loans in the quarter, up 1,605% year over year. Even while growing this quickly, Upstart has been able to stay profitable, with $36.3 million in operating income last quarter. Upstart is also pushing heavily into auto loans with its acquisition of Prodigy. Auto loans are a $635 billion market, giving Upstart a long runway to grow if it can gain traction within the industry.</p>\n<p>Management is guiding for $750 million in revenue this fiscal year. With a market cap of $19.2 billion, that gives the stock a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 25.6. This is extremely expensive, but as with Palantir, if you believe Upstart can keep up this high rate of growth, this P/S could come down quickly within the next five years. And given the fact that Upstart is already profitable while growing its revenue so quickly, that indicates it can have strong profit margins once its business matures.
