Just hours earlier, Russia formally recognized the regions’ independence.

Russia called it a peacekeeping mission. The U.S. described that as “nonsense,” while U.K. minister Sajid Javid said “the invasion of Ukraine has begun.”

It’s safe to say markets weren’t buying it either. U.S. stock futures pointed lower, led by Nasdaq futures as the miserable start to 2022 looked set to get even worse. The MOEX, Russia’s benchmark stock index, has taken a hammering, plunging more than 20% in the past five days.

Unsurprisingly, oil prices surged, with Brent crude futures topping $99 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate futures rising above $95 at one point, as traders feared the crisis would disrupt supplies.

The $100 a barrel milestone is within touching distance but as Western leaders begin to impose sanctions on Russia, oil could conceivably climb much higher in the coming days.

Developments over the past 24 hours have dashed hopes of a diplomatic resolution, leaving markets to fear the worst.

But just how bad could it be?

Goldman Sachs analysts said an outright conflict with punitive sanctions could send the S&P 500 6% lower and the Nasdaq 10% lower from Friday’s close. Just hours earlier, Russia formally recognized the regions’ independence.Russia called it a peacekeeping mission. The U.S. described that as “nonsense,” while U.K. minister Sajid Javid said “the invasion of Ukraine has begun.”It’s safe to say markets weren’t buying it either. U.S. stock futures pointed lower, led by Nasdaq futures as the miserable start to 2022 looked set to get even worse. The MOEX, Russia’s benchmark stock index, has taken a hammering, plunging more than 20% in the past five days.Unsurprisingly, oil prices surged, with Brent crude futures topping $99 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate futures rising above $95 at one point, as traders feared the crisis would disrupt supplies. The $100 a barrel milestone is within touching distance but as Western leaders begin to impose sanctions on Russia, oil could conceivably climb much higher in the coming days.Developments over the past 24 hours have dashed hopes of a diplomatic resolution, leaving markets to fear the worst. But just how bad could it be?Goldman Sachs analysts said an outright conflict with punitive sanctions could send the S&P 500 6% lower and the Nasdaq 10% lower from Friday’s close. That is based on recent market moves in relation to the ruble and calculations that the currency is still 10% off its maximum undervaluation level of the past two decades.Their worst case scenario would see WTI climb 13% and the yield on the 10-year Treasury fall 27 basis points. It’s worth noting how difficult it is to predict geopolitical-led market shifts. It was also the year of the meme stock, in which companies like GameStop (NYSE:GME) and AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) skyrocketed while being pushed by message boards like WallStreetBets of Reddit.

Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) also routinely appears among the 10 most-popular stocks on WallStreetBets. But despite its popularity, it underperformed the market in 2021. Is this a sign of what's to come?

Source: Getty Images

Palantir is a software data management company. Specifically, the company creates platforms for integrating, managing, and securing data for their clients. Using the platform, the client is able to quickly answer complicated queries using huge amounts of data. Palantir offers clients three main products; Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo.

Gotham is an Artificial Intelligence(AI)-ready operating system. This system enables faster decision making by analyzing complex data for insights. It has been used for disaster relief and by defense agencies and is also available commercially. Foundry is described by Palantir as the "operating system for the modern enterprise." It is an integrated platform that provides analytics, model-building, visualization, and other functions. The Apollo product is the delivery system that powers Palantir's software platforms. It also enables customers to operate away from the public cloud which is often necessary for military organizations. Palantir services both the public and private sectors.

Palantir stock reached highs of $45 in early 2021 after debuting just a few months prior at only $10. This was during the height of the short-squeezes fueled by individual investors and message boards. The stock quickly retreated from these highs, and the share price has underperformed ever since. However, there are reasons for optimism along with reasons for continued concern.

PLTR data by YCharts

Prolific revenue growth

Palantir has not had any issues growing its revenue recently. In the third quarter of 2021, the company reported top-line sales of $392 million. This came in 36% higher than the $289 million posted in the year-ago quarter. It also grew its customer base, with commercial customers increasing 46% quarter over quarter. The company also gained large customers with deep pockets. In the third quarter, it reported deals with the U.S. Air Force, National Institutes of Health, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In total, the company reported 54 deals that were worth more than $1 million.

Palantir also has an excellent gross margin and adjusted operating margin. For the third quarter, the gross margin under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) was an impressive 78%. This is an excellent sign that the company could scale successfully to GAAP net profits.

Palantir also reported an adjusted operating income of $349 million. On one hand, this is very impressive as it represents a margin of 32%. On the other hand, it highlights an issue that should give shareholders pause: the stock-based compensation (SBC) expense.

Stock-based compensation

As mentioned, Palantir reports a non-GAAP operating margin that is very impressive but continues to post GAAP operating losses. This is because the company removes SBC from the GAAP figures to arrive at the adjusted figures. Palantir uses a tremendous amount of SBC to reward executives and other employees. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2021, the company expensed over $611 million in SBC.

This generally causes the share count to increase and dilutes existing investors. However, it is not entirely negative. SBC also can preserve cash at a time when the company is spending heavily to grow the business. Because of the SBC, Palantir was able to post positive cash from operations through the third quarter 2021.

It also helps to attract and keep the best talent. It is no secret that the labor market is very tight. Attracting the best people can make a world of difference in the success of an enterprise. Finally, when insiders own shares of the business, their interests are aligned with those of shareholders.

The valuation looks more attractive

Growth stocks have been hit hard so far in 2022. Inflation has breached 7%, and the Federal Reserve is set to raise rates, likely several times this year. This hurts growth stocks in particular, since Wall Street values them on future cash flows.

There also appears to be a general concern that valuations had gotten a bit ahead of fundamentals in 2021. This revaluation has caused Palantir to look much more attractive lately, especially compared to some other fast-growing tech stocks, as shown below.

PLTR data by YCharts

The bottom line

Palantir remains one of the most popular stocks with individual investors, even after its underperformance in 2021 and so far in 2022. But it is not a stock built solely on hype. In fact, there is much to like in the recent results. Revenue continues to grow, and margins have expanded nicely. Is this a sign of what's to come?Source: Getty ImagesPalantir is a software data management company. Specifically, the company creates platforms for integrating, managing, and securing data for their clients. Using the platform, the client is able to quickly answer complicated queries using huge amounts of data. Palantir offers clients three main products; Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo.Gotham is an Artificial Intelligence(AI)-ready operating system. This system enables faster decision making by analyzing complex data for insights. It has been used for disaster relief and by defense agencies and is also available commercially. Foundry is described by Palantir as the \"operating system for the modern enterprise.\" It is an integrated platform that provides analytics, model-building, visualization, and other functions. The Apollo product is the delivery system that powers Palantir's software platforms. It also enables customers to operate away from the public cloud which is often necessary for military organizations. Palantir services both the public and private sectors.Palantir stock reached highs of $45 in early 2021 after debuting just a few months prior at only $10. This was during the height of the short-squeezes fueled by individual investors and message boards. The stock quickly retreated from these highs, and the share price has underperformed ever since. However, there are reasons for optimism along with reasons for continued concern.PLTR data by YChartsProlific revenue growthPalantir has not had any issues growing its revenue recently. In total, the company reported 54 deals that were worth more than $1 million.Palantir also has an excellent gross margin and adjusted operating margin. For the third quarter, the gross margin under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) was an impressive 78%. This is an excellent sign that the company could scale successfully to GAAP net profits.Palantir also reported an adjusted operating income of $349 million. On one hand, this is very impressive as it represents a margin of 32%. On the other hand, it highlights an issue that should give shareholders pause: the stock-based compensation (SBC) expense.Stock-based compensationAs mentioned, Palantir reports a non-GAAP operating margin that is very impressive but continues to post GAAP operating losses. This is because the company removes SBC from the GAAP figures to arrive at the adjusted figures. Palantir uses a tremendous amount of SBC to reward executives and other employees. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2021, the company expensed over $611 million in SBC.This generally causes the share count to increase and dilutes existing investors. However, it is not entirely negative. SBC also can preserve cash at a time when the company is spending heavily to grow the business. Because of the SBC, Palantir was able to post positive cash from operations through the third quarter 2021.It also helps to attract and keep the best talent. It is no secret that the labor market is very tight. Attracting the best people can make a world of difference in the success of an enterprise. Finally, when insiders own shares of the business, their interests are aligned with those of shareholders. The valuation looks more attractiveGrowth stocks have been hit hard so far in 2022. Inflation has breached 7%, and the Federal Reserve is set to raise rates, likely several times this year. This hurts growth stocks in particular, since Wall Street values them on future cash flows. There also appears to be a general concern that valuations had gotten a bit ahead of fundamentals in 2021. This revaluation has caused Palantir to look much more attractive lately, especially compared to some other fast-growing tech stocks, as shown below.PLTR data by YChartsThe bottom linePalantir remains one of the most popular stocks with individual investors, even after its underperformance in 2021 and so far in 2022. But it is not a stock built solely on hype. In fact, there is much to like in the recent results. Revenue continues to grow, and margins have expanded nicely. The company is now generating positive cash from operations, with a nice assist from its SBC program. The valuation has come down significantly, making Palantir more attractive than many other growth names. Even so, the swoon in tech stocks may not be over just yet, and investors should be cautious here.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1137,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9004469192,"gmtCreate":1642662909737,"gmtModify":1676533733440,"author":{"id":"3584847656643563","authorId":"3584847656643563","name":"DonOng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/54759d027c86613457f9642d36d1623a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584847656643563","authorIdStr":"3584847656643563"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","listText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","text":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9004469192","repostId":"2204069173","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2204069173","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1642660948,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2204069173?lang=&edition=full_marsco","pubTime":"2022-01-20 14:42","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Singapore ventures into SPAC arena, Temasek-backed entity set for listing","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2204069173","media":"Reuters","summary":"SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore, seeking to revive its lacklustre fundraising market, is pulling out","content":"

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore, seeking to revive its lacklustre fundraising market, is pulling out all the stops to emerge as a key listing venue for smaller sized blank-check companies as a firm backed by state investor Temasek debuts on Thursday.

This comes four months after Singapore Exchange allowed special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) to list, easing proposed rules in response to market feedback.

The inaugural listing of Vertex Venture's Singapore SPAC also marks the first major debut of such structures in Asia since the frenzy seen in the United States in early 2021 prior to regulatory changes there.

"The point is to attract high-growth technology companies which conventionally would not have considered this market and now they have sponsors who can take over the risk also," said Chua Kee Lock, CEO of Vertex Venture, a subsidiary of state investor Temasek.

SPACs raise money in an initial public offering (IPO), put it in a trust and then aim to merge with a private company and take it public. Apple CEO Tim Cook last quarter said that supply constraints caused by chip shortages had cost Apple $6 billion, and the chip shortages and supply issues are also expected to impact Apple's first quarter earnings results.

Ahead of the earnings report, here's a close look at some of the areas investors may want to check on.

Revenue growth

Analysts have big expectations for Apple's top line. On average, they expect revenue of $118 billion for the quarter. Though this only represents about 6% year-over-year growth, it's a bullish forecast when you put it into context. First, consider the tough comparison Apple is up against. Revenue in the year-ago period rose 29% year over year. Second, supply constraints and logistical challenges in the company's most recently reported quarter were so great that management opted to refrain from providing specific revenue guidance for fiscal Q1, coinciding with the fourth calendar quarter. In addition, Apple management said it expected the pain from supply challenges to persist in fiscal Q1.

"We estimate the impact from supply constraints will be larger during the December quarter," management said in the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call.

But if Apple does a good job of mitigating supply chain challenges, the December quarter could be quite impressive; management said Apple was seeing "high demand" for its products. In addition, management said it expects "revenue for each product category to grow on a year-over-year basis, except for iPad, which we expect to decline year over year due to supply constraints."

Earnings per share

Analysts expect Apple's earnings per share to grow even faster than revenue. On average, analysts are modeling for earnings per share of $1.88, representing year-over-year growth of 12%.

Apple's earnings per share typically grow faster than its revenue because of the company's aggressive share repurchases. By reducing total share count over time, Apple's net income is spread across a shrinking number of shares, contributing to earnings-per-share growth.

Revenue guidance

Another important metric investors will probably look to is management's guidance for its fiscal second-quarter revenue. Currently, analysts seem to have a very conservative view for the quarter, with the consensus estimate calling for revenue of $90.4 billion. That's only slightly above the $89.6 billion of revenue the company reported in the second quarter of fiscal 2021.

Just as was the case for fiscal Q1, the light revenue forecast stems from Apple's tough year-ago comparisons and an uncertain operating environment. But it's possible analysts are being too conservative.

Overall, supply chain and logistical challenges mean that Apple's upcoming earnings report is a bit of a wildcard; Apple's business performance could be anywhere from poor to outstanding relative to analyst estimates. But in order for the company to keep investors excited, Apple will likely have to report revenue, earnings per share, and revenue guidance ahead of analysts' estimates.

Apple Analysts Boost Targets Ahead of Earnings

Analysts continue to crank out bullish notes about Apple‘s outlook ahead of the tech giant’s earnings report.

Apple had a big run in late 2021, pushing the stock close to the $3 trillion market capitalization level, a milestone no company has previously reached. Bulls think results for the fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31 could spur the stock to finally eclipse that hurdle.

Loop Capital Markets analyst Ananda Baruah repeated his Buy rating on Apple shares, lifting his price target to $210, from $165. He believes the company will surpass Street expectations both on iPhone units sold and for average selling prices in fiscal 2022. Apple could post 10% to 15% growth in both iPhone and overall revenue this year, he writes, which would be well ahead of the Street consensus forecast for 4.4% growth.

Baruah estimates December-quarter iPhone units were in the 84-to-85-million-unit range, above the Street consensus at 81 million. Driven by strong iPhone sales, he’s modeling December-quarter revenue of $122 billion and profits of $1.95 a share, above consensus at $118 billion and $1.88 a share. He also thinks the Street consensus on calendar 2022 iPhone production is too low—he’s expecting 243 million to 245 million, with the Street at 240 million.

Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar likewise repeated his Overweight rating on Apple shares, while lifting his price target to $200 from $175. “We believe Apple has a favorable set-up for 2022,” he writes in a research note. “We believe iPhone momentum will continue due to 5G adoption, particularly in the United States and China. In addition, we see growth in services and wearables offsetting some of our growth concerns in Mac and iPads.”

Kumar adds that he sees healthcare and autos as “the next major growth markets for the company.” The move into those markets, he says, should set up the company to expand its valuation to $4 trillion and beyond.

“We expect the upcoming earnings print for Dec-Q (F1Q) to feature some of the headwinds from the slow supply chain ramp in relation to new products, which will limit the magnitude of upside; although, we expect a modest beat nevertheless, led by better iPhone shipments,” JPMorgan’s Samik Chatterjee said in a note.

Production disruptions due to Covid outbreaks have impacted companies across industries in the past year, but JPMorgan sees supply recovering for Apple in the fiscal second quarter.

Improved supply and persistently strong demand should lead to above-seasonal iPhone revenue, JPMorgan said. The firm expects Apple to ship 61 million iPhones in the fiscal second quarter, translating to $49.2 billion of sales.

While JPMorgan says Apple shares are not cheap relative earnings, the firm believes the company’s positive outlook for the year should keep investors happy.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple Earnings Are Coming: What to Watch
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple Earnings Are Coming: What to Watch\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Tiger Newspress
\n
2022-01-17 17:30
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Apple will report its first fiscal quarter of 2022 (fourth calendar quarter) results after market close on Thursday, Jan. 27.

The first quarter earnings call will give us insight into sales of the iPhone 13 models, AirPods 3, M1 Pro and Max MacBooks, and other devices during the holiday quarter that ended in December. Apple CEO Tim Cook last quarter said that supply constraints caused by chip shortages had cost Apple $6 billion, and the chip shortages and supply issues are also expected to impact Apple's first quarter earnings results.Ahead of the earnings report, here's a close look at some of the areas investors may want to check on.Revenue growthAnalysts have big expectations for Apple's top line. In addition, Apple management said it expected the pain from supply challenges to persist in fiscal Q1.\"We estimate the impact from supply constraints will be larger during the December quarter,\" management said in the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call. But if Apple does a good job of mitigating supply chain challenges, the December quarter could be quite impressive; management said Apple was seeing \"high demand\" for its products. In addition, management said it expects \"revenue for each product category to grow on a year-over-year basis, except for iPad, which we expect to decline year over year due to supply constraints.\"Earnings per shareAnalysts expect Apple's earnings per share to grow even faster than revenue. On average, analysts are modeling for earnings per share of $1.88, representing year-over-year growth of 12%.Apple's earnings per share typically grow faster than its revenue because of the company's aggressive share repurchases. By reducing total share count over time, Apple's net income is spread across a shrinking number of shares, contributing to earnings-per-share growth.Revenue guidanceAnother important metric investors will probably look to is management's guidance for its fiscal second-quarter revenue. Currently, analysts seem to have a very conservative view for the quarter, with the consensus estimate calling for revenue of $90.4 billion. That's only slightly above the $89.6 billion of revenue the company reported in the second quarter of fiscal 2021.Just as was the case for fiscal Q1, the light revenue forecast stems from Apple's tough year-ago comparisons and an uncertain operating environment. But it's possible analysts are being too conservative.Overall, supply chain and logistical challenges mean that Apple's upcoming earnings report is a bit of a wildcard; Apple's business performance could be anywhere from poor to outstanding relative to analyst estimates. But in order for the company to keep investors excited, Apple will likely have to report revenue, earnings per share, and revenue guidance ahead of analysts' estimates.Apple Analysts Boost Targets Ahead of EarningsAnalysts continue to crank out bullish notes about Apple‘s outlook ahead of the tech giant’s earnings report.Apple had a big run in late 2021, pushing the stock close to the $3 trillion market capitalization level, a milestone no company has previously reached. Bulls think results for the fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31 could spur the stock to finally eclipse that hurdle.Loop Capital Markets analyst Ananda Baruah repeated his Buy rating on Apple shares, lifting his price target to $210, from $165. He believes the company will surpass Street expectations both on iPhone units sold and for average selling prices in fiscal 2022.
