The first column contains the MoM percent change for the current month. The second column contains the MoM percent change in the prior month. The third column contains the MoM acceleration – i.e. the difference between the percent change this month minus the percent change last month. The fourth column contains the Cumulative Contribution to the percent MoM change of CPI. This describes exactly how much each component contributed to the cumulative All Items MoM percent change in CPI. The sum of the values in this column will yield the MoM percent change of All Items CPI (with minor discrepancy due to rounding). Finally, the rightmost column contains the Cumulative Contribution to MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. The sum of the contributions in this column adds up to the MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. Although all five columns provide important information, we recommend that readers pay special attention to the rightmost column (Cumulative Contribution to Acceleration) as it reveals exactly what drove the MoM acceleration/deceleration in CPI during the current month compared to the prior month.

As can be seen in the table above, Core Services ex Housing and Core Goods decelerated very significantly, accounting for most of the overall deceleration in CPI. More details will be provided below.

Analysis of CPI Components that Contributed Most to Change & Acceleration of CPI

In the following section, we perform the same contribution analysis as above, but at a more granular level of detail. In Figure 4 below, we list the top 10 CPI components (most granular level) that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM percent change in All Items CPI. These contributions take into account both the magnitude of the MoM change in each component as well as the weight of each component in All Items CPI.

Figure 4: Top Contributors to MoM Percent Change

Top CPI Contributors(BLS, Investor Acumen)

Source: BLS, Investor Acumen

One thing that emerges from this analysis is that a significant share of the deceleration of core CPI this month came from relatively volatile items, that might be considered "one-offs". For example, the significant decline in new and used car prices and health insurance may not be representative of core inflationary dynamics.

In Figure 5 below, we list the top 10 CPI components, at the most granular level, that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM acceleration (expressed in percent change) of All Items CPI. These contributions take into account both the magnitude of the MoM accelerations in the components as well as the weight of each component All Items CPI.

Figure 5: Top Contributors to MoM Acceleration

Top CPI Acceleration Contributors(BLS, Investor Acumen)

Source: BLS, Investor Acumen

As can be seen above, new and used cars, utilities and health insurance accounted for 0.26% of CPI deceleration -- the lion-share of deceleration and "surprise" for the month.

Also, somewhat notable, was the deceleration in Owner's Equivalent rent as well as Rent of Primary Residence -- both decelerating by 0.1% relative to last month. This indicates that housing inflation may possibly have peaked for this cycle and could be headed in a downward direction.

It is worthwhile to examine tables 4 and 5 above carefully as they are likely to include most or all of the items which surprised forecasters during the month.

Top Movers

In Figure 6 below, for general interest purposes, we show the components with the largest positive and negative MoM change (%). The YoY change in these particular components is to the right.

Figure 6: Top Movers MoM Percent Change

Top CPI Movers(BLS, Investor Acumen)

Source: BLS, Investor Acumen

Implications for Policy and Economic Performance

In this section, we review the potential implications of this month’s CPI report on policy (monetary & or fiscal) and the overall outlook for the US economy.

Impact on Policy. On the margin, this month’s deceleration of All-Items and Core CPI incrementally decreases pressure on the Fed to tighten overall financial conditions more than markets have expected. In fact, today’s numbers may tend to lower market expectations regarding how much (“terminal rate”), how fast and for how long the Fed may increase the Federal Funds interest rate.

Impact on Economic Performance. On the margin, the numbers may lead to speculation that inflation has peaked and is heading down in the intermediate term. This will take pressure off of interest rates across the economy such as mortgage interest rates. This could alleviate some of the headwinds that the economy has recently been experiencing, particularly in interest rate sensitive sectors.

Potential Financial Markets’ Impact

The CPI report, on the margin, will likely decrease risk perceptions regarding the probability of the Fed being forced to tighten monetary policy to a degree that would induce recession. In particular, market expectations of the Fed’s so-called “terminal rate” may decrease. This would cause the cost of financing across the economy to decrease and overall financial conditions to ease somewhat. This should provide a positive boost for both bond and equity markets.

This month's report may provide a “window of opportunity” for bonds and stocks to rise during the next month, until the next CPI report comes out.

I would caution that the internal details of this report, although generally positive, may not be quite as bullish as they appear on the surface. Much of the deceleration in both All-Items CPI and Core CPI was due to a few volatile components, which may not be representative of underlying inflationary trends. Still, this is the best news on inflation that the market has had in quite a while, and a significant relief rally in stocks and bonds can probably be expected.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
CPI: A Relief For Markets But Details Only Moderately Bullish
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCPI: A Relief For Markets But Details Only Moderately Bullish\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-11-11 23:34 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryWe summarize key data and provide in-depth analysis of the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).All Items and Core CPI inflation were ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".DJI":"道琼斯",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4555901-cpi-relief-for-markets-but-only-moderately-bullish","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1129448010","content_text":"SummaryWe summarize key data and provide in-depth analysis of the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).All Items and Core CPI inflation were significantly below expectations. Results were significantly impacted by \"one-off\" results in a few volatile items.Overall, the report should be received with \"relief\" by bond and equity markets. This could alleviate some of the headwinds that the economy has recently been experiencing, particularly in interest rate sensitive sectors.Potential Financial Markets’ ImpactThe CPI report, on the margin, will likely decrease risk perceptions regarding the probability of the Fed being forced to tighten monetary policy to a degree that would induce recession. In particular, market expectations of the Fed’s so-called “terminal rate” may decrease. This would cause the cost of financing across the economy to decrease and overall financial conditions to ease somewhat. This should provide a positive boost for both bond and equity markets. This month's report may provide a “window of opportunity” for bonds and stocks to rise during the next month, until the next CPI report comes out.I would caution that the internal details of this report, although generally positive, may not be quite as bullish as they appear on the surface. Much of the deceleration in both All-Items CPI and Core CPI was due to a few volatile components, which may not be representative of underlying inflationary trends. Still, this is the best news on inflation that the market has had in quite a while, and a significant relief rally in stocks and bonds can probably be expected.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":181,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9031429177,"gmtCreate":1646648628355,"gmtModify":1676534146660,"author":{"id":"3585044510958477","authorId":"3585044510958477","name":"Jer_Soul","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1e2cafce52f5cbb77f8b4a073c7be9a3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585044510958477","idStr":"3585044510958477"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Miser] ","listText":"[Miser] ","text":"[Miser]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":10,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9031429177","repostId":"1110751744","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1110751744","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1646646053,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1110751744?lang=&edition=full_marsco","pubTime":"2022-03-07 17:40","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Bank Stocks Slipped in Premarket Trading","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1110751744","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Deutsche Bank fell over 8% and Citigroup fell over 3%.","content":"

Deutsche Bank fell over 8% and Citigroup fell over 3%.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Wedbush’s Dan Ives, for example, has been talking about the market cap milestone since our conversation in Q3 of last year, at least.

But other analysts have also hopped on the bullish bandwagon recently. Morgan Stanley upped its price target to $200 per share in November, while the JPMorgan research team saw Apple stock heading to $3.5 trillion in market cap over the next 12 months.

One of the most vocal optimists came from the buy side. Loup’s Gene Munster thought that his previous price target had quickly become stale, and that $250 per share now seemed more reasonable. In his opinion, the multi-year opportunity in the metaverse will gain investor appreciation in the new year, which should reignite momentum that the stock had lost in the last few weeks of 2021.

AAPL: the bear case

Despite the upbeat expectations described above, mostly supported by company-specific factors, the market rolled into 2022 with its guard up. The boogieman of the moment seems to be the Federal Reserve’s anticipated reaction to near-full employment and sticky inflation, which should lead to higher interest rates in the next several months.

I have recently explained how tighter money supply can spell trouble for stocks that trade for relatively high multiples. While AAPL is no Tesla or Rivian, the stock’s forward P/E of nearly 30 times and only modest earnings growth expectations could be a drag for share price in 2022, as investors look for better deals in value and cyclical stocks.

The Apple Maven’s take

I continue to think that Apple is a great stock to buy and hold for the long term. Under the leadership of a CEO (and former COO) that is driven by operational excellence, the company seems to be in very good hands. Better yet, demand for Apple’s products and services, as well as consumer appreciation for the brand, seem to be at or near an all-time high.

That said, the setup for the first few weeks or months of 2022 looks challenging to me. Apple stock climbed relentlessly in 2020, and then again last year. Aided by a spike in pandemic-driven demand for tech devices and lavish liquidity in the system, AAPL recorded one of its best three years of returns ever between 2019 and 2021.

As much as the metaverse and autonomous vehicles can and likely will support the company’s financial results over the next many years, I think that AAPL stock is overdue for a breather. While shares will likely climb back above $3 trillion and head much higher from there eventually, I am not so confident that this rally will happen in the immediate future.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can Apple Stock Reclaim $3 Trillion And Thrive In 2022?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCan Apple Stock Reclaim $3 Trillion And Thrive In 2022?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-09 12:31 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
A market cap of $3 trillion has, so far, proven to be a ceiling that Apple stock does not seem ready to break through yet. Apple stock climbed relentlessly in 2020, and then again last year. Aided by a spike in pandemic-driven demand for tech devices and lavish liquidity in the system, AAPL recorded one of its best three years of returns ever between 2019 and 2021.As much as the metaverse and autonomous vehicles can and likely will support the company’s financial results over the next many years, I think that AAPL stock is overdue for a breather. While shares will likely climb back above $3 trillion and head much higher from there eventually, I am not so confident that this rally will happen in the immediate future.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":84,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":893083589,"gmtCreate":1628221094141,"gmtModify":1703503438291,"author":{"id":"3585044510958477","authorId":"3585044510958477","name":"Jer_Soul","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1e2cafce52f5cbb77f8b4a073c7be9a3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585044510958477","idStr":"3585044510958477"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buy As data from the U.S. Census Bureau confirms, the portion ofretail transactions conductedvia e-commerce channels has exploded. It only makes sense for financial requests to shift online too, bolstering the already-promising case for SOFI stock.
\n
Of course, the novel coronavirus impacted this broader narrative. Not only that, the ongoing public health crisis may swing positively for SoFi and other online financial institutions.
\n
True, the vaccine rollout led to relaxed mitigation protocols, and people have eagerly taken advantage. But the intensity of the delta variant may continue to drive transactions online — a point in favor of SOFI stock.
\n
While the paper backdrop sounds appealing for the financial technology (fintech) play, the market has a different idea. To be fair, on a year-to-date basis, SOFI stock is up 18%, which is statistically a very solid figure. But over the trailing six months, SOFI has hemorrhaged nearly 23%.
\n
Yes, early-bird investors are still feeling good about themselves. But for recent shareholders and prospective buyers, it can’t be an encouraging development.
\n
Adding to the concerns are the circumstances revolving around SoFi’s educational loan products. As our ownChris Lau stated:
\n
\n “SoFi will lose around $40 million in student loan financing. The government extended a moratorium on student loan payments. Instead of expiring on Sept. 30, the government extended it into 2022. In the second quarter, SoFi posted adjusted net revenue of $237 million. This is despite its student loan refinancing business operating at below 50% of pre-Covid levels.”\n
\n
Uncomfortable with such prospects, investors dumped SOFI stock. Though difficult to project, a valid bearish argument exists.
\n
SOFI Stock’s Headwind May Be Far From Over
\n
To clarify my use of Lau’s analysis, myInvestorPlacecolleague recognizes the near-term volatility that SOFI stock could encounter. However, he states that the “student loan headwind is temporary.” Moreover, the company is “already making up the difference by increasing its efforts on the fast-growing financial services.”
\n
Though I don’t necessarily disagree that student loan challenges reflect temporary setbacks, I’m not entirely sure investors can just ignore that obstacle. I think there’s a real risk in assuming that SOFI stock is a credible discount because it can afford to ignore a critical growth area.
\n
I don’t think it can. According to the Center for American Progress, “About43 million adult Americans— roughly one-sixth of the U.S. population older than age 18 — currently carry a federal student loan and owe $1.5 trillion in federal student loan debt, plus an estimated $119 billion in student loans from private sources that are not backed by the government.” That’s not a consumer base that anyone can walk away from.
\n
But the problem moving forward is that students are rethinking higher education, and the Covid-19 crisis amplified matters. According to Third Way, though students believe the worst of the crisis is behind us, they haveconcerns about economic stability.
\n
More tellingly, students give credit to their academic institutions for handling the pandemic. However, they have begun to rethink the cost structure of a college degree. Student surveys reveal that their biggest concern now are focused on practical needs and costs, in light of the uncertain economic future.
\n
That being the case, you may see a generational shift soon where college education is simply not the priority it once was. Therefore, the student loan headwind could in reality become along-term one.
\n
The Double-Edged Nature of SOFI Stock’s Tech
\n
This sets up what has to be a potentially cruel irony for SOFI stock. To be sure, advanced connectivity technologies have enabled companies like SoFi to provide online services that were previously conducted in person. But that same disruptive spirit of innovation can boomerang back to hit SoFi in the face.
\n
In a way, it’s already happening. Should prospective students avoid traditional higher education curriculum because of spiraling costs, then it would negatively impact SoFi’s future business prospects. Young people might opt for online education solutions instead, which may be much cheaper than their standard counterparts.
\n
Additionally, a college education is statistically one of the most effective means ofupward class mobility. But if we start to have generations of workers who choose to avoid college altogether, the playing field will dwindle even more for SOFI stock.
\n
While I see the attractiveness of the underlying business, interested buyers may want to wait a bit more before getting involved.
