Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a gain of 870,000.
\n
The news rekindled dollar momentum from midweek when Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida suggested that conditions for hiking interest rates might be met as soon as late 2022.
\n
Fed officials have said that improving employment is critical to when they begin to pull back further on extra support the provided for the economy in the pandemic.
\n
Clarida's remarks lifted Treasury yields after five weeks of declines while \"real\" yields, excluding inflation, are set to snap a six-week streak of declines .
\n
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note reached as high as 1.29%, up from 1.179% on Monday.
\n
Against the euro, the dollar rose to $1.1772, up 0.5%. The euro was pressured earlier in the day by weaker-than-expected German industrial orders data.
\n
The greenback rose to 110.25 Japanese yen.
\n
The British pound fell 0.3% to $1.3888.
\n
Expectations for a strong set of U.S. jobs numbers had been heightened somewhat on Thursday when initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 14,000 to 385,000 in the week ended July 31.
\n
Analysts have cautioned that the markets will be looking for more evidence that U.S. yields are going significantly higher again. Friday's yield was still nearly a half percentage point lower than at the end of March.
\n
Reactions to the monthly jobs reports have changed more often than not this year in the days after the data was released, strategists at Wells Fargo Securities found when they looked at yields on 10-year Treasuries.
\n
Big moves in exchange rates are unlikely until Federal Reserve officials make clear they are ready to lead other central banks in pulling back economic support, said Joseph Trevisani, senior analyst at fxstreet.com.
\n
\"The Fed is pumping far more money into the U.S. economy and, by diffusion, to the rest of the world than anybody else,\" Trevisani said.
\n
Markets will next be watching for comments from Fed policymakers at the end of month at a symposium of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
\n
A recent Reuters poll of strategists showed most predicting a dollar fall over the next year.
\n
\"We're in the phase in the business cycle where growth and global trade are going to remain relatively solid, and that's going to provide some downside bias for the dollar,\" said Vasilieos Gkionakis, global head of FX strategy at Lombard Odier Group.
\n
(Reporting by David Henry in New York, Sujata Rao and Ritvik Carvalho in London and Tom Westbrook in Singapore; Since taking the helm of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, the Oracle of Omaha has led his stock to an average annual return of 20%. Taking into account the 20% year-to-date gain for Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A), shareholders have seen Buffett generate aggregate returns of almost 3,400,000% in 56 years.
\n
Although Berkshire Hathaway has a relatively large portfolio filled with four dozen different securities, Buffett has never been a big fan of diversification. As a result, only a small number of holdings comprise the bulk of Berkshire Hathaway's $206.4 billion in unrealized gains, as of this past weekend.
\n
Based on the cost basis of Berkshire's major holdings (outlined in the company's 2020 annual shareholder letter), the following five stocks have netted Buffett $181.1 billion in combined unrealized gains (about 88% of all current unrealized profit), not including dividends paid.
\n

\n
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett is all smiles with his company sitting on over $206 billion in unrealized gains. Image source: The Motley Fool.
\n
Apple: $101,764,676,001 in unrealized gains
\n
Easily the best investment of Buffett's tenured career is Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Even after modestly paring down his company's stake in the tech kingpin, Berkshire Hathaway still owns 907,559,761 shares at a cost basis of $34.26 a share. With Apple closing last week at $146.39 a share, the Oracle of Omaha and his team are sitting on close to a $102 billion unrealized gain.
\n
Investors certainly shouldn't look for this stake to be reduced any further anytime soon. That's because Buffett views Apple as Berkshire Hathaway's \"third business.\" It's a globally recognized brand with an exceptionally loyal following, as evidenced by the mammoth lines outside of its stores anytime a new product hits the shelves. And, as you're probably aware, the iPhone is the dominant smartphone by market share in the U.S.
\n
In addition to Apple being a product innovation juggernaut, CEO Tim Cook is overseeing a steady transition toward services. By emphasizing various subscription-based platforms, Apple can reduce some of the revenue lumpiness associated with tech replacement cycles and likely boost its operating margins.
\n
A final reason Buffett isn't bailing on Apple is the company's generous shareholder return program. Though some of you might be scratching your head given that Apple's dividend yield is \"only\" 0.6%, the $0.88 base annual payout is closer to 2.6% of Berkshire Hathaway's cost basis. Tack on Apple's aggressive share repurchase program and you have a very shareholder-friendly company.
\n

\n
\n
Bank of America: $24,530,235,143 in unrealized gains
\n
There's no industry on the planet Buffett loves more than bank stocks -- and there's no bank stock Buffett favors more than Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). Berkshire Hathaway owns over 1.03 billion shares of BofA with a cost basis of $14.17 a share. This works out to an unrealized gain of just over $24.5 billion, based on where BofA shares closed this past Friday, July 16.
\n
Buffett has always been a big fan of playing the economic numbers game, which is exactly what he's doing with Bank of America. Since the U.S. economy spends a disproportionate amount of time expanding, relative to contracting, bank stocks like BofA should benefit from stronger loan origination and higher net interest income. The Oracle of Omaha is fully aware that recessions are a natural part of the economic cycle, but he fully understands that the long term strongly favors optimists.
\n
More specific to the business, BofA stands to benefit from eventual interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive of all the big banks, with the company noting in the June-ended quarter that a 100 basis point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would net it an extra $8 billion in net interest income over the next 12 months.
\n
With BofA pushing digitization initiatives and bolstering its dividend program, it's far likelier that Buffett ups his stake in the company than sells a single share.
\n

\n
\n
American Express: $24,488,160,264 in unrealized gains
\n
Whereas the gains racked up in Apple and BofA have come within the past couple of years, the nearly $24.5 billion in unrealized gains in credit services behemoth American Express (NYSE:AXP) have been built up over the past 28 years. With a cost basis of right around $8.49 a share, Buffett's patience has paid off in a big way with AmEx.
\n
Similar to Bank of America, American Express is a cyclical company that benefits from the aforementioned numbers game. If the U.S. and global economy are expanding, consumers and businesses are more likely to spend more, thereby helping boost payment processing revenue and profits. Keep in mind, though, AmEx is a double dipper. In addition to processing payments, it's also a credit services provider. This means it can generate growing amounts of fee revenue and interest income during long-winded periods of expansion.
\n
Another facet to AmEx's success is the company's ability to bring in affluent clientele. The well-to-do are far less inclined to alter their spending habits when minor economic disruptions rear their heads. As a result, AmEx isn't as likely to be hurt by credit delinquencies as some of its lending peers.
\n
With Berkshire Hathaway an American Express shareholder since 1993, I don't foresee Buffett or his team selling shares anytime soon.
\n

\n
\n
Coca-Cola: $21,262,000,000 in unrealized gains
\n
Speaking of tenured holdings, no stock has been a fixture in Buffett's portfolio for longer than beverage giant Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO). With a cost basis of a fraction under $3.25 a share, Buffett and his team have piled up almost $21.3 billion in unrealized gains by owning Coca-Cola since 1988.
\n
Like Apple, we're talking about a company with insanely strong branding and brand recognition. Coke products are sold in all but two countries worldwide (Cuba and North Korea), and it has more than 20 brands in its product portfolio generating at least $1 billion in annual sales. Coca-Cola enjoys the best of both worlds, with 20% of the developed market cold beverage share (i.e., highly predictable cash flow) and 10% of emerging market cold beverage share, which represents a higher-growth opportunity over the long run.
\n
Beyond geographic diversity, marketing is a big reason for Coca-Cola's success. The company has not been shy about turning to social media and well-known ambassadors to represent its brand, and it has clear holiday tie-ins that go back decades.
\n
Considering that Berkshire Hathaway is netting almost a 52% annual dividend yield based on its original cost basis for Coca-Cola, there's absolutely no incentive to sell this position.
\n

\n
\n
Moody's: $9,076,258,024 in unrealized gains
\n
While Apple singlehandedly takes the crown for generating the highest unrealized return in nominal dollars for the Oracle of Omaha, credit ratings agency Moody's (NYSE:MCO) might well be Warren Buffett's greatest investment on a percentage basis of all time. Berkshire's cost basis is $10.05 a share following Moody's spinoff from Dun & Bradstreet in 2000. Moody's closed this past week at almost $378 a share -- good enough for a 3,661% return and nearly $9.1 billion unrealized gain.
\n
One thing keeping Moody's busy is historically low lending rates. With the Federal Reserve standing pat for as long as possible on interest rates, businesses haven't been shy about issuing debt to hire, acquire, innovate, or even buy back stock, as in Apple's case. With so much corporate debt issued, Moody's has been active evaluating the debt landscape.
\n
Equally exciting has been the generally heightened levels of market volatility and economic uncertainty since the beginning of 2020. Though Moody's is best known for its credit ratings operations, its fastest-growing segment tends to be analytics. As long as deep levels of uncertainty exist, Moody's Analytics has double-digit annual growth potential.
\n
As with Coke, Buffett's patience has resulted in an insanely high yield on cost with Moody's. Despite a 0.7% nominal yield, Berkshire Hathaway is netting an almost 25% yield annually, based on its initial cost basis.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Warren Buffett Has Gained Over $181 Billion on These 5 Stocks
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWarren Buffett Has Gained Over $181 Billion on These 5 Stocks\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-23 11:44 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B) CEO Warren Buffett is arguably in a class of his own when it comes to investing legends. The Oracle of Omaha is fully aware that recessions are a natural part of the economic cycle, but he fully understands that the long term strongly favors optimists.\nMore specific to the business, BofA stands to benefit from eventual interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive of all the big banks, with the company noting in the June-ended quarter that a 100 basis point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would net it an extra $8 billion in net interest income over the next 12 months.\nWith BofA pushing digitization initiatives and bolstering its dividend program, it's far likelier that Buffett ups his stake in the company than sells a single share.\n\nImage source: American Express.\nAmerican Express: $24,488,160,264 in unrealized gains\nWhereas the gains racked up in Apple and BofA have come within the past couple of years, the nearly $24.5 billion in unrealized gains in credit services behemoth American Express (NYSE:AXP) have been built up over the past 28 years. With a cost basis of right around $8.49 a share, Buffett's patience has paid off in a big way with AmEx.\nSimilar to Bank of America, American Express is a cyclical company that benefits from the aforementioned numbers game. If the U.S. and global economy are expanding, consumers and businesses are more likely to spend more, thereby helping boost payment processing revenue and profits. Keep in mind, though, AmEx is a double dipper. In addition to processing payments, it's also a credit services provider. This means it can generate growing amounts of fee revenue and interest income during long-winded periods of expansion.\nAnother facet to AmEx's success is the company's ability to bring in affluent clientele. The well-to-do are far less inclined to alter their spending habits when minor economic disruptions rear their heads. As a result, AmEx isn't as likely to be hurt by credit delinquencies as some of its lending peers.\nWith Berkshire Hathaway an American Express shareholder since 1993, I don't foresee Buffett or his team selling shares anytime soon.\n\nImage source: Coca-Cola.\nCoca-Cola: $21,262,000,000 in unrealized gains\nSpeaking of tenured holdings, no stock has been a fixture in Buffett's portfolio for longer than beverage giant Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO). With a cost basis of a fraction under $3.25 a share, Buffett and his team have piled up almost $21.3 billion in unrealized gains by owning Coca-Cola since 1988.\nLike Apple, we're talking about a company with insanely strong branding and brand recognition. Coke products are sold in all but two countries worldwide (Cuba and North Korea), and it has more than 20 brands in its product portfolio generating at least $1 billion in annual sales. Coca-Cola enjoys the best of both worlds, with 20% of the developed market cold beverage share (i.e., highly predictable cash flow) and 10% of emerging market cold beverage share, which represents a higher-growth opportunity over the long run.\nBeyond geographic diversity, marketing is a big reason for Coca-Cola's success. The company has not been shy about turning to social media and well-known ambassadors to represent its brand, and it has clear holiday tie-ins that go back decades.\nConsidering that Berkshire Hathaway is netting almost a 52% annual dividend yield based on its original cost basis for Coca-Cola, there's absolutely no incentive to sell this position.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMoody's: $9,076,258,024 in unrealized gains\nWhile Apple singlehandedly takes the crown for generating the highest unrealized return in nominal dollars for the Oracle of Omaha, credit ratings agency Moody's (NYSE:MCO) might well be Warren Buffett's greatest investment on a percentage basis of all time. Berkshire's cost basis is $10.05 a share following Moody's spinoff from Dun & Bradstreet in 2000. Moody's closed this past week at almost $378 a share -- good enough for a 3,661% return and nearly $9.1 billion unrealized gain.\nOne thing keeping Moody's busy is historically low lending rates. With the Federal Reserve standing pat for as long as possible on interest rates, businesses haven't been shy about issuing debt to hire, acquire, innovate, or even buy back stock, as in Apple's case. With so much corporate debt issued, Moody's has been active evaluating the debt landscape.\nEqually exciting has been the generally heightened levels of market volatility and economic uncertainty since the beginning of 2020. Though Moody's is best known for its credit ratings operations, its fastest-growing segment tends to be analytics. As long as deep levels of uncertainty exist, Moody's Analytics has double-digit annual growth potential.\nAs with Coke, Buffett's patience has resulted in an insanely high yield on cost with Moody's. Despite a 0.7% nominal yield, Berkshire Hathaway is netting an almost 25% yield annually, based on its initial cost basis.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":134,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":170822661,"gmtCreate":1626421715453,"gmtModify":1703759849753,"author":{"id":"3585134583010792","authorId":"3585134583010792","name":"Dennis1015","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/fdbe6b2d7bf6c9620daf7480e8b27bde","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hi…pls like me thanks a lot","listText":"Hi…pls like me thanks a lot","text":"Hi…pls like me thanks a lot","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/170822661","repostId":"2151508331","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2151508331","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1626420022,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2151508331?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-16 15:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Drugmaker GSK plans $550 mln expansion of England R&D facility","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2151508331","media":"Reuters","summary":"July 16 (Reuters) - Britain's GlaxoSmithKline on Friday laid out plans to set up a new life sciences","content":"
July 16 (Reuters) - Britain's GlaxoSmithKline on Friday laid out plans to set up a new life sciences campus within its R&D site in Stevenage, England, raising up to 400 million pounds ($552.76 million) by selling some land at the facility.
\n
The London-listed drugmaker said it expects to select a private-sector developer later this year and sell 33 acres of the 92-acre site. The ugly reality is that the next stock market crash is inevitable -- the only real question is when that crash will happen.
\n
Fortunately, market crashes are nothing new. Their history provides a great guide on how to not just survive the next one but also thrive when it comes time to emerge from the other side of it. The key is to get prepared before the crash so that when it comes, you have the tools you need already available to you. Still, by making sure you have cash available before the next crash, you set yourself up to be much better situated after the crash happens.
\n
There are a couple of key reasons for this. First, stock market crashes and job losses often go hand in hand with each other. If you lose your job after the market crashes, having a cash reserve can go a long way toward keeping you from having to sell near market lows.
\n
Second, if you have cash available, buying stocks after they've crashed is a great way to make your money work harder for you. Selling one cheap stock after a crash to buy another doesn't make all that much sense, but raising cash when stocks are pricy to invest when they're cheap can be a much smarter wealth building strategy.
\n
The key trade-off, of course, is that money you have set aside in cash isn't earning much in the way of a return at the moment, especially when compared to inflation. A good rule of thumb is that you need at least a 3-6 month emergency fund in cash. In addition, having around 5 or so years' worth of expenses you need your portfolio to cover in a less volatile and higher certainty investment than stocks can help you ride out typical downturns.
\n
No. 2: Know the value of what you own
\n
Ultimately, a share of stock is nothing more than a fractional ownership stake in a business. A reasonable value can be estimated for most companies by using techniques like the discounted cash flow model to assess the current value of its expected future earnings stream. In a rapidly rising market, relying on valuations can seem old school, but when the market is crashing, valuation plays a much bigger role.
\n
A key reason is this: if you can buy a company for a reasonable or even cheap price based on its ability to generate cold hard cash, why would you sell just because the market is panicking? Indeed, a discounted cash flow analysis or other fundamentals-based valuation technique can help the savviest investors know why it's OK to buy more shares even as the market is collapsing.
\n
Beyond that, understanding what a company is really worth can help you prepare for a crash. If a stock you own has risen to the point where there is absolutely no financial justification for its market price, it might be a good candidate to sell to raise the cash you need.
\n
No. 3: Have a shopping list of companies you want to buy
\n
Even the best investors can feel overwhelmed as the market moves swiftly and strongly against them. That's where having a plan for what you'd like to buy -- and at what price -- can come in handy. With a list of great companies and a reasonable valuation estimate for each of them, a market crash can turn into an incredible buying opportunity to buy their stocks while they're on sale.
\n
Of course, you do need to keep in mind that the market often has a good reason for crashing in the first place. As a result, when the market offers you what looks like a great price to buy a company you're interested in owning, do take a moment to refresh your estimate of the company's value before buying. If the company's shares tanked because its business is failing, it's probably not worth owning. If its stock was unfairly discarded in a general market panic, however, it could be a great time to buy in big.
\n
No. 4: Keep smartly diversified
\n
Often, when the overall market crashes, it's because an entire industry finds itself in trouble. For instance, consider the dot.com implosion in 2000 or the financial crisis in 2008. If a big chunk of your money is chasing the next hot thing and that particular thing is what drives the next market crash, then you can be in a world of hurt. If the companies you own wind up out of business, then their shares -- and the money you have invested in them -- won't be participating in any rally that follows.
\n
When times are good, portfolio diversification may seem like a fairly meaningless exercise. After all, it can't help you earn better returns in a raging bull market. When the market is in a panic, however, there is incredible value in its ability to limit the impact that any one company or industry's failing will have on your overall net worth. After all, limiting the unrecoverable damage of a crash is key to being able to participate in any subsequent recovery.
\n
You can make it through the next crash
\n
Stock market crashes are inevitable. There's not much you can do to avoid them aside from not investing at all, and that can be incredibly hazardous to your long term net worth. With these four approaches, you can improve your odds of making it through the next crash intact and potentially even emerging in a better position once it ends.
\n
The key thing to note about these techniques, though, is that they work better if you get them in place before the next crash happens. So if you're really worried about a market crash, then there's no better than when the market is near an all-time high to get your plans in place.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Worried About a Stock Market Crash? 4 Ways to Be Ready
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWorried About a Stock Market Crash? 4 Ways to Be Ready\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-26 17:50 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Given worries of a resurging COVID-19 threat, rising inflation, and stretched valuations have combined to make investors nervous about the stock market.
