Still, investors were surprised to learn officials were mulling rate hikes earlier than 2024.\n\"At first blush, the dot plot which projected two hikes by 2023 was more hawkish than expected, and markets reacted as such,\" said Daniel Ahn, chief U.S. economist at BNP Paribas.\nThe benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose on the Fed news, while the dollar index , which tracks the greenback against six major currencies, rose to a six-week peak.\nWith inflation rising faster than expected and the economy bouncing back quickly, the market had been looking for clues of when the Fed may alter the policies put into place last year to combat the economic fallout from the pandemic, including a massive bond-buying program.\nThe Fed reiterated its promise to await \"substantial further progress\" before beginning to shift to policies tuned to a fully open economy. It also held its benchmark short-term interest rate near zero and said it will continue to buy $120 billion in bonds each month to fuel the economic recovery.\n\"Chair Powell has signaled, while the committee is not yet ready to taper, it is now in the minds of the committee. After the S&P 500 fell below 4,000 -- an area that harbors one of the highest open interest to roll out -- selling intensified, according to Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers LLC.“Once we broke through there, all hell broke loose,” Sosnick said on Bloomberg TV. “I have not been one of those to make too much hay about these expirations but lately they really have become significant.”It’s the latest example of a controversial narrative that suggests that stocks effectively become a derivative of its own derivative -- one that upends the traditional relationship between options and their underlying assets. The interplay between the equity and options markets can be complex. To illustrate the dynamics, Brent Kochuba, founder of analytic service SpotGamma, calculated thegamma, or the theoretical value of stock required for market makers to buy or sell in order to hedge the directional exposure resulting from all price fluctuations in options. At 8 a.m. Tuesday, dealer gamma was flat, according to SpotGamma’s estimate, meaning they didn’t need to do much hedging. After the data on August’s consumer price index hit the wire at 8:30 a.m., S&P 500 futures tumbled almost 3% in a matter of minutes. Instantly, dealer positioning flipped to a dynamic known as short gamma, meaning market makers had to trade with the prevailing trend -- in this case selling stocks when they fall.“Because these are short dated puts, their value changes much more rapidly,” said Kochuba. “Gamma is higher as you get closer to expiration. This leads to more active hedging, which expands volatility.”The dynamic was a reversal from the previous week when an equity rally into this upcoming options expiration led to a decay in the value of put positions. That in turned prompted dealers to purchase stocks, adding fuel to market gains.Source: Goldman SachsIt’s unclear if the event known as OpEx will fuel fresh fireworks on Friday this time round. About $3.2 trillion of options are set to expire, obliging holders to either roll over existing positions or start new ones. The tally includes more than $2 billion of S&P 500-linked contracts and $505 billion of derivatives across single stocks scheduled to run out, according to estimates by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. strategist Rocky Fishman. The good news is that there was little sense of panic during the S&P 500’s $1.5 trillion rout on Tuesday, according to Amy Wu Silverman, an equity derivatives strategist at RBC Capital Markets. Stock tradingvolumewas subdued, and the analyst didn’t see many new positions initiated in the derivatives market. That means, hedging activity from options dealers is likely to subside accordingly after Friday’s event.“It’s definitely safe to blame options for some of the exacerbation of moves,” she said. “But it’s not really like this move freaked people out and made them add hedges.”","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":233,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":150700473,"gmtCreate":1624926447592,"gmtModify":1703847996828,"author":{"id":"3585385605908328","authorId":"3585385605908328","name":"Thomas9413","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/effcfaa82ddb11a4fa57136b2a6f8351","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585385605908328","idStr":"3585385605908328"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like and comment ","listText":"Please like and comment ","text":"Please like and comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/150700473","repostId":"2147837316","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":614,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":124620101,"gmtCreate":1624762962803,"gmtModify":1703844671960,"author":{"id":"3585385605908328","authorId":"3585385605908328","name":"Thomas9413","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/effcfaa82ddb11a4fa57136b2a6f8351","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585385605908328","idStr":"3585385605908328"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like and comment ","listText":"Please like and comment ","text":"Please like and comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/124620101","repostId":"1172710941","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1172710941","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1624753126,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1172710941?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-27 08:18","market":"us","language":"en","title":"GameStop Joined the Russell 1000. The Russell 1000 tracks large-capitalization stocks—and in order to be included in the latest index reconstitution, stocks had to have market caps of at least $7.3 billion on May 7.
\n
As one of the stocks favored by retail traders this year, GameStop (ticker: GME) met that threshold because it had an $11.2 billion market cap by the deadline, while AMC Entertainment(AMC) didn’t. That said, AMC has rocketed higher since May 7, multiplying by more than five times and surpassing GameStop’s market value—hitting a recent $27 billion compared to GameStop’s $15 billion.
\n
It may seem counterintuitive, but the Russell 1000 “promotion” may actually be bad for GameStop’s stock,as Barron’s explained earlier this month.Funds that track the small-capRussell 2000will have to sell GameStop shares on June 28, and funds that track the Russell 1000 will have to buy them. Three times as much money is invested in funds that track the Russell 1000, but GameStop’s overall weight in that index will be much lower than it has been in the Russell 2000. In the Russell 2000, GameStop made up about half a percentage point of the index, while it will be less than 0.1% of the Russell 1000. GameStop will look tiny next to behemoths like Apple(AAPL).
\n
Experts like Jefferies strategist Steven DeSanctis expect that there will be net selling in GameStop of about 5 million shares, or about half of the stock’s recent average daily volume, after the rebalancing.
\n
Meanwhile, AMC will be the largest member of the Russell 2000 by far—more than three times as large as its nearest competitor as of last week. GameStop will look tiny next to behemoths like Apple(AAPL).\nExperts like Jefferies strategist Steven DeSanctis expect that there will be net selling in GameStop of about 5 million shares, or about half of the stock’s recent average daily volume, after the rebalancing.\nMeanwhile, AMC will be the largest member of the Russell 2000 by far—more than three times as large as its nearest competitor as of last week. A handful of the blue chip stocks that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, are poised to start reflecting their underlying companies' long-term resilience. Here's a closer look at the three top prospects from this group that you may want to add to your portfolio sooner than later.1. BoeingThere's no denying Boeing has been through the wringer over the past few years. First, it was the tragic design flaws that led to the grounding of its 737 MAX model. Then, just when it looked like the company might push past that challenge, the COVID-19 pandemic materialized, decimating demand for air travel and severely crimping demand for new aircraft. The world is easing its way back to normal though, and on average, airlines' fleets are now about four years older than they were when the pandemic caused them to put orders on hold. Their aircraft replacement plans can't be postponed for much longer. And those purchases aren't being put off anymore. Alaska Airlines just placed its biggest-ever order for Boeing-made planes, Delta recently requested 100 new 737 MAX jets, and United Airlines is reportedly mulling a triple-digit order for new widebody aircraft. Indeed, U.K.-based aerospace industry news outlet ADS reported that in the third quarter, total aircraft orders were the highest they've been since 2015, with Boeing accounting for 256 of them. That brings the company's backlog up to 5,236 passenger jets -- which amounts to years' worth of revenue. For perspective, Boeing delivered a little over 300 aircraft through the first three quarters of the year.Driving this swell of demand for new aircraft is the post-COVID-19 rebound in air travel. Global consultancy Bain & Company estimates that the worldwide air travel and logistics market will be worth $525 billion this year. That's still shy of 2019's figure of $666 billion, but Bain forecasts that the market should exceed that level next year en route to resuming its pre-pandemic growth pace.Connect the dots. Boeing's industrywide long-term expectation for the delivery of 41,170 passenger jet deliveries between now and 2041 is anything but out of line. In that light, the stock's 61% pullback from 2019's high to its current price doesn't make much sense.2. IBMInternational Business Machines (IBM) may have missed out on some of its initial opportunities to capitalize on things like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity when those markets were relatively new a decade ago. The company's making up for lost time now, though. Not only does it have strong plays in all of those arenas now, IBM is quickly becoming a powerhouse in hybrid cloud computing, which supports them all. This success isn't necessarily easy to see in the company's recent quarterly reports. IBM has no specific hybrid cloud business unit, and even if it did, last quarter's top-line growth of 6% was fairly modest.Dig deeper though, and the picture looks brighter.IBM's hybrid cloud success isn't well-defined for good reason. The company sells what are largely turn-key solutions to complex technological problems built upon this tech. More than mere platforms, it offers combinations of hardware, software, and consulting that all support one another. As CFO Jim Kavanaugh explained at an investor conference earlier this year, \"when we land a hybrid cloud platform, there's an economic multiplier on top of that, $3 to $5 a software for every dollar of platform we land, $6 to $8 of services for every dollar of platform we land.\" Some of IBM's specialties subject to this multiplier model include application management, automation, and the aforementioned cybersecurity and artificial intelligence offerings. Its growth may still seem a bit muted, but that's to be expected. This business model is still relatively new, as is the underlying hardware and software, and they haven't yet had to chance to reach their full growth potential. They're moving faster than you might think, however. Last quarter's modest 6% growth? If you strip out the adverse impacts of foreign currency fluctuations and the strong dollar, IBM's top line actually grew 15% year over year.Investors may start pricing in this strength soon too. In fact, the stock's recent rally suggests the market's already starting to figure out all the bullish details.3. VisaCredit card company Visa is another Dow 30 stock poised to start soaring before the end of the year, and it should continue rising well after 2022 ends. It's easy to entertain doubts about this particular pick. The global economy isn't exactly firing on all cylinders, and a full-blown recession may be in the cards. Consumers and corporations are expected to clamp down on their spending in such an economic environment.Except consumers rarely actually clamp down. They certainly haven't done so yet, despite the headwinds we've seen this year so far. Last quarter's revenue was up a hefty 19% year over year for Visa, capping off a 22% increase for the fiscal year ending in September. The total number of transactions the company handled was up 10% for the three-month stretch and higher to the tune of nearly 12% for the year. The year's total transaction figure was a whopping 33% higher than it was in pre-COVID fiscal 2019.The driving force behind this growth isn't more discretionary spending -- that may well be on the verge of drying up. It's the decreasing use of cash to buy goods and services. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco's most recent look at U.S. consumers' payment preferences indicated that cash was only used to make 20% of 2021's purchases, extending a downward streak that has dialed cash's use back from 31% of purchases in 2017. While the numbers are different overseas, the trend isn't. Don't be surprised to see cards continue to displace cash for the purchases of even the most basic things. The analyst community clearly remains optimistic about Visa's near-term and distant futures. While its top-line growth is on pace to slow to only 9% this year, sales growth is expected to reaccelerate to more than 12% next year, pulling profits higher with it. This year's weakness in the stock offers investors a great chance to plug into Visa's persistent progress.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"IBM":0.9,"V":0.75,"BA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":280,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":115463546,"gmtCreate":1623027401485,"gmtModify":1704194493335,"author":{"id":"3585385605908328","authorId":"3585385605908328","name":"Thomas9413","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/effcfaa82ddb11a4fa57136b2a6f8351","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585385605908328","idStr":"3585385605908328"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great info.. please leave 1 comment for me ","listText":"Great info.. please leave 1 comment for me ","text":"Great info.. please leave 1 comment for me","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/115463546","repostId":"2141926289","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":536,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3565606031340333","authorId":"3565606031340333","name":"YaocH","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bd36b13b6f78e9fd2dc60b5637a51b9c","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"authorIdStr":"3565606031340333","idStr":"3565606031340333"},"content":"Pls return comment","text":"Pls return comment","html":"Pls return comment"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110590819,"gmtCreate":1622466680031,"gmtModify":1704184800563,"author":{"id":"3585385605908328","authorId":"3585385605908328","name":"Thomas9413","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/effcfaa82ddb11a4fa57136b2a6f8351","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585385605908328","idStr":"3585385605908328"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Excellent doc .. please comment or response ","listText":"Excellent doc .. please comment or response ","text":"Excellent doc .. please comment or response","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/110590819","repostId":"1186906468","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":438,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3582273441359971","authorId":"3582273441359971","name":"Ysheng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4a3b6b4a8fba869942de50f5b19db17b","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"authorIdStr":"3582273441359971","idStr":"3582273441359971"},"content":"Comment too","text":"Comment too","html":"Comment too"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9987573183,"gmtCreate":1667955275142,"gmtModify":1676537989400,"author":{"id":"3585385605908328","authorId":"3585385605908328","name":"Thomas9413","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/effcfaa82ddb11a4fa57136b2a6f8351","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585385605908328","idStr":"3585385605908328"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9987573183","repostId":"2282948127","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2282948127","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1667955487,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2282948127?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-11-09 08:58","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street Ends Higher As Investors Eye U.S. Midterms","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2282948127","media":"Reuters","summary":"* Take-Two, Lyft slump on downbeat forecasts* Amgen climbs on cholesterol drug data* Indexes: S&P 50","content":"

* Take-Two, Lyft slump on downbeat forecasts

* Amgen climbs on cholesterol drug data

* Indexes: S&P 500 +0.56%, Nasdaq +0.49%, Dow +1.02%

Nov 8 (Reuters) - In my book, it's a company that's grown earnings over time and returns for investors. Today, a lot of these players have followed the general market lower. In some cases, they're struggling with current headwinds like higher inflation. But their positive long-term outlook remains intact. That's why you'll want to buy these stocks today, at a discount, and hold on for the long haul. Two perfect examples are Amazon and Home Depot. They've proved their strengths. And they just so happen to be global leaders in their businesses.1. AmazonAmazon stock has climbed more than 125% over the past five years. Annual revenue and net income also have advanced, well into the billions of dollars, during that time period. This is as the company grew its position in two major businesses: e-commerce and cloud computing.Today, net sales continue to climb at Amazon thanks to its leadership in these areas. But higher costs and supply chain troubles have been weighing on earnings. As a result, operating income and operating cash flow have been on the decline. The stock price, too, has suffered. It's lost 32% so far this year. And that leaves Amazon trading at less than 3 times sales. That's close to its lowest level in about six years. Here's why this is a bargain for Amazon. Today's troubles are linked to the overall economy, so they're temporary. At the same time, the company is making progress in handling them. It's controlling certain costs and improving productivity, for example.Another bright spot is the cloud computing business, Amazon Web Services (AWS). It has continued to grow in spite of today's tough economy. AWS posted double-digit gains in sales and operating income in the second quarter. As for e-commerce, the strength of its Prime subscription service should power earnings growth once the economy improves. As it stands today, Prime members continue to spend more and more on the platform. All of this makes me optimistic that Amazon can once again deliver more than just packages. It has what it takes to deliver great gains to shareholders over time.2. Home DepotWhen it comes to earnings, Home Depot has defied the general economic gloom. In the second quarter, the world's biggest home improvement retailer reported its highest quarterly sales and earnings ever. The stock price hasn't followed, though. Home Depot shares have lost more than 30% since the beginning of the year. This leaves the shares trading at about 17 times forward earnings estimates. That's lower than the more than 25 number earlier this year. At the same time, as mentioned above, revenue continues to rise. This is a great entry point for a company that continues to grow in spite of a difficult environment -- and a company with solid prospects.HD PE ratio (forward). Data by YCharts. So, why is the stock down today? Some investors are avoiding stocks linked to consumer spending. And Home Depot falls into that category. It's also possible that it eventually will see a slowdown. But as I mentioned above regarding Amazon, any such slowdown is temporary. Here's why there's more reason to be positive about Home Depot and buy the stock for the long term. First, if the company can do this well during tough times, there's reason to believe it can truly flourish when the economy improves.Second, Home Depot has offered us some visibility on what's ahead, and it looks positive. The company recently reported its professional customers say their project backlogs remain healthy.Another positive point is the company's move to improve its digital platform, for professionals and do-it-yourself customers. And that's bearing fruit. In the second quarter, it reported record downloads, sales, and traffic on its mobile app.Right now, Home Depot shares look dirt cheap. That's considering today's earnings performance and the long-term picture for this market leader.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AMZN":0.9,"HD":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":291,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9097873771,"gmtCreate":1645420575991,"gmtModify":1676534026516,"author":{"id":"3585385605908328","authorId":"3585385605908328","name":"Thomas9413","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/effcfaa82ddb11a4fa57136b2a6f8351","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585385605908328","idStr":"3585385605908328"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ","listText":"Great ","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9097873771","repostId":"2213670409","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2213670409","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1645399123,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2213670409?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-21 07:18","market":"us","language":"en","title":"PCE Inflation, Consumer Confidence: What to Know This Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2213670409","media":"Yahoo Finance","summary":"After stocks endured a second straight week of selling last week, investors will be looking to a sla","content":"

After stocks endured a second straight week of selling last week, investors will be looking to a slate of fresh economic and earnings data as a catalyst for a potential reprieve.

The U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed Monday in observance of the Presidents Day holiday, so new data releases will be consolidated to the later part of the week. And updates on tensions in Russia and Ukraine will also remain in focus throughout the week after stocks sank to their lowest levels in a month on Friday, amid concerns about the escalating geopolitical conflict.

While the emerging threat of military conflict has overshadowed many other worries in the markets, inflation has still remained a central issue for investors. Inflation has implications both in informing the speed at which the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy, and the extent to which consumers pull back on spending and slow overall economic activity in response to rising prices.

"I really think most of the Russia-Ukraine volatility occurred in the energy space, particularly with oil. I think the rest of the volatility in the broader market has to do with the Fed tightening conversation," Frances Stacy, Optimal Capital director of strategy, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. "We're looking at this sort of aggressive tightening against this backdrop of inflation, and I think that that's what's causing the volatility."

On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its monthly personal consumption expenditures (PCE) deflator, offering a fresh print on the extent of price increases across the recovering economy.

Consensus economists expect the PCE to post a rise of another 0.6% in January, according to Bloomberg data, accelerating from December's 0.4% increase. This would represent a 14th consecutive monthly increase, and bring the index up by 6.0% on a year-over-year basis. This, in turn, would mark the fastest increase since 1982, and also accelerate from December's 5.8% annual rise.

The core PCE index — the Fed's preferred gauge of underlying inflation stripping out volatile food and energy prices — likely also ramped compared to December's index. Consensus economists are looking for a 5.2% increase in core PCE in January, compared to December's 4.9% rise.

Expectations for the latest inflation print suggest the economy has still not yet seen the peak in price increases. And increasingly, central bank officials have come around to the notion that inflation has remained stickier than previously expected, especially as supply chain issues and virus-related disruptions persist.

"Since the December meeting, I would say that the inflation situation is about the same but probably slightly worse," Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a January press conference. "I’d be inclined to raise my own estimate of 2022 core PCE inflation ... by a few tenths today."

And the latest print on PCE will likely reaffirm readings from other closely watched inflation prints. The January Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by 7.5% year-over-year to represent the largest increase since 1982, accelerating markedly from the 7.0% increase from December. And on the producer side, wholesale prices jumped 9.7% year-on-year in January, ticking down only slightly from December's record increase of 9.8%.

Consumer confidence

Despite the mounting inflationary pressures, however, consumers have largely continued to spend. Retail sales rose by a better-than-expected 3.8% in January, marking the biggest jump since March 2021 and exceeding estimates.

And this steady consumption has come even as consumers increasingly cited inflation as a key concern for their own personal finances. Average hourly wages have also climbed in recent months, but have still not kept pace with inflation.

"The resilience of spending stands in stark contrast to the slump in consumer confidence, with households upping their purchases of big ticket items while simultaneously reporting that now is a particularly bad time to make those purchases," Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note. "The surge in inflation is the root cause of consumer angst. Sentiment should improve as inflation falls back later this year, but the current weakness is a reminder that real consumption growth will be muted this year."

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index due for release on Tuesday will help provide a timely snapshot of consumers' thinking following the latest spike in prices at the beginning of the year. Consensus economists are looking for the index to fall to 110.0 for February, which would mark the lowest level since September 2021, when the Delta variant had weighed on consumers' outlooks. The consumer confidence index had been at 113.8 in January.

Earnings season rolls on

Investors will also receive a number of new earnings results this week, with major retailers including Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), Macy's (M) and The TJX Cos. (TJX) reporting alongside other closely watched names from Coinbase (COIN) to Wayfair (W) and Nikola (NKLA).

So far this earnings season, corporate profits have remained robust, albeit while slowing compared to prior quarters. As of Friday, 84% of S&P 500 companies had reported actual fourth-quarter earnings results, according to FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for S&P 500 companies in aggregate stood at 30.9%, compared to about 40% from the third quarter.

Still, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter has trended continuously higher as more companies reported better-than-expected results. On December 31, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter had been at just 21.2%.

But while results for many companies have been positive for the final three months of 2021, outlooks have weakened, reflecting lingering supply chain uncertainty, rising prices and other macro concerns. FactSet noted that of companies that held their earnings conference calls between Dec. 15 and Feb. 17, 72% of the corporations mentioned "inflation."

"In terms of earnings guidance from corporations, 71% of the S&P 500 companies (55 out of 77) that have issued EPS [earnings per share] guidance for Q1 2022 have issued negative guidance," FactSet's John Butters wrote in a note Friday. Inflation has implications both in informing the speed at which the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy, and the extent to which consumers pull back on spending and slow overall economic activity in response to rising prices.\"I really think most of the Russia-Ukraine volatility occurred in the energy space, particularly with oil. I think the rest of the volatility in the broader market has to do with the Fed tightening conversation,\" Frances Stacy, Optimal Capital director of strategy, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. \"We're looking at this sort of aggressive tightening against this backdrop of inflation, and I think that that's what's causing the volatility.\"On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its monthly personal consumption expenditures (PCE) deflator, offering a fresh print on the extent of price increases across the recovering economy.Consensus economists expect the PCE to post a rise of another 0.6% in January, according to Bloomberg data, accelerating from December's 0.4% increase. Consensus economists are looking for a 5.2% increase in core PCE in January, compared to December's 4.9% rise.Expectations for the latest inflation print suggest the economy has still not yet seen the peak in price increases. And increasingly, central bank officials have come around to the notion that inflation has remained stickier than previously expected, especially as supply chain issues and virus-related disruptions persist.\"Since the December meeting, I would say that the inflation situation is about the same but probably slightly worse,\" Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a January press conference. \"I’d be inclined to raise my own estimate of 2022 core PCE inflation ... by a few tenths today.\"And the latest print on PCE will likely reaffirm readings from other closely watched inflation prints. The January Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by 7.5% year-over-year to represent the largest increase since 1982, accelerating markedly from the 7.0% increase from December. And on the producer side, wholesale prices jumped 9.7% year-on-year in January, ticking down only slightly from December's record increase of 9.8%.Consumer confidenceDespite the mounting inflationary pressures, however, consumers have largely continued to spend. Retail sales rose by a better-than-expected 3.8% in January, marking the biggest jump since March 2021 and exceeding estimates. And this steady consumption has come even as consumers increasingly cited inflation as a key concern for their own personal finances. Average hourly wages have also climbed in recent months, but have still not kept pace with inflation.\"The resilience of spending stands in stark contrast to the slump in consumer confidence, with households upping their purchases of big ticket items while simultaneously reporting that now is a particularly bad time to make those purchases,\" Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note. \"The surge in inflation is the root cause of consumer angst. Sentiment should improve as inflation falls back later this year, but the current weakness is a reminder that real consumption growth will be muted this year.\"The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index due for release on Tuesday will help provide a timely snapshot of consumers' thinking following the latest spike in prices at the beginning of the year. Consensus economists are looking for the index to fall to 110.0 for February, which would mark the lowest level since September 2021, when the Delta variant had weighed on consumers' outlooks. The consumer confidence index had been at 113.8 in January.Earnings season rolls onInvestors will also receive a number of new earnings results this week, with major retailers including Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), Macy's (M) and The TJX Cos. (TJX) reporting alongside other closely watched names from Coinbase (COIN) to Wayfair (W) and Nikola (NKLA).So far this earnings season, corporate profits have remained robust, albeit while slowing compared to prior quarters. As of Friday, 84% of S&P 500 companies had reported actual fourth-quarter earnings results, according to FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for S&P 500 companies in aggregate stood at 30.9%, compared to about 40% from the third quarter.Still, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter has trended continuously higher as more companies reported better-than-expected results. On December 31, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter had been at just 21.2%.But while results for many companies have been positive for the final three months of 2021, outlooks have weakened, reflecting lingering supply chain uncertainty, rising prices and other macro concerns. FactSet noted that of companies that held their earnings conference calls between Dec. 15 and Feb. 17, 72% of the corporations mentioned \"inflation.\"\"In terms of earnings guidance from corporations, 71% of the S&P 500 companies (55 out of 77) that have issued EPS [earnings per share] guidance for Q1 2022 have issued negative guidance,\" FactSet's John Butters wrote in a note Friday. \"This is the highest percentage of S&P 500 companies issuing negative guidance since Q3 2019 (73%).\"\"Thus, the market may be reacting more to the negative earnings guidance and downward estimates revisions for the first quarter of 2022 than the earnings surprises being reported for the fourth-quarter of 2021,\" Butters added.Economic calendarMonday: No notable reports scheduled for releaseTuesday: FHFA House Price Index, December (1.1% expected, 1.1% in November); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, December month-over-month (1.10% expected, 1.18% in November); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, December year-over-year (18.30% expected, 18.29% in November); Markit U.S. Manufacturing PMI, February preliminary (56.0 expected, 55.5 in January); Markit U.S. Services PMI, February preliminary (53.0 expected, 51.2 in January); Markit U.S. Composite PMI, February preliminary (51.1 in January); Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, February (110.0 expected, 113.8 in January); Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, February (10 expected, 8 in January)Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended February 18 (-5.4% during prior week)Thursday: Chicago Fed National Activity Index, January (-0.15 in December); GDP annualized, quarter-over-quarter, 4Q second estimate (7.0% expected, 6.9% in prior estimate); Personal consumption, 4Q second estimate (3.3% expected, 3.3% in prior estimate); Core PCE quarter-over-quarter, 4Q second estimate (4.9% expected, 4.9% in prior estimate); Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Activity, February (24 in January)Friday: Personal income, January (-0.4%, 0.3% in December); Personal spending, January (1.5% expected, -0.6% in December); Durable Goods Orders, January preliminary (0.9% -0.7% in December); Durable Goods Orders excluding transportation, January preliminary (0.3% expected, 0.6% in December); PCE deflator, January year-over-year (6.0% expected, 5.8% in December); PCE deflator, January month-over-month (0.6% expected, 0.4% in December); PCE core deflator, January year-over-year (5.2% expected, 4.9% in December); PCE core deflator, January month-over-month (0.5% expected, 0.5% in December)Earnings calendarMondayNo notable reports scheduled for releaseTuesdayBefore market open: Apache Corp.
