The struggling electric truck start-up announced Q2 vehicle production and delivery numbers, and they were better than expected. The company said 4,467 vehicles were delivered in the quarter while 4,401 vehicles were manufactured. Consensus expected deliveries to come in at 3,500.Adding further sheen, Rivian also said it remains on track to hit its 25,000 production target in 2022.The strong display did not come as much of a surprise to RBC analyst Joseph Spak, who believes the results should “boost investor confidence in 2022 targets.”“Recall we previewed that we had a lot of confidence in delivery expectations and thought there could be upside,” the analyst went on to say. “Our RBC Elements™ work showed production at Rivian's Normal IL plant was likely improving, and it did.”Rivian encountered many issues earlier this year, which ranged from chip shortages to covid-related headwinds while the vehicle lines were also rearranged. All served to affect production but also soured investor sentiment. But evidently investors were happy the business was able to maintain its annual output objective in spite of these difficulties. That was reflected in the share price’s 18% uptick over the past two trading sessions. So far this year, Rivian has manufactured 6,954 vehicles, which suggests that for the rest of the year it will need to manufacture ~18,000 or ~687/week to meet its target.“This is likely to be accomplished by continued improvement on the current shift and the addition of a second shift,” says Spak, “which we believe will occur in August.”To this end, Spak reiterated an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating on RIVN along with a $77 price target. If the target is achieved, RIVN shares could provide ~143% returns over the next 12 months.Reflecting Spak’s positive take, Baird’s Ben Kallo thinks the results could be indicative of a sea change at Rivian.“RIVN has faced growing pains as it has started production,” the analyst noted, “but the news shows a step in the right direction.”In fact, the analyst believes that as the EV story unfolds on a global scale, Rivian has a “solid opportunity to mount a challenge to Tesla’s current dominance.”In line with this view of RIVN's underlying strength, Kallo rates the stock an Outperform (i.e. Buy), with a $67 price target that implies a 12-month upside of ~112%. Looking at the consensus breakdown, 8 Buys, 5 Holds and 1 Sell have been assigned in the last three months. Therefore, RIVN gets a Moderate Buy consensus rating. Based on the $49 average price target, shares could rise ~55% in the next twelve months.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":517,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9020040401,"gmtCreate":1652542552303,"gmtModify":1676535118597,"author":{"id":"3585477991561030","authorId":"3585477991561030","name":"Chloess","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dc1bba40382f0d1a7bb35fc7a06beba7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585477991561030","authorIdStr":"3585477991561030"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Pls like","listText":"Pls like","text":"Pls like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9020040401","repostId":"1194383761","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1194383761","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1652483971,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1194383761?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-05-14 07:19","market":"us","language":"en","title":"US IPO Weekly Recap: Energy Play ProFrac Leads a 3 IPO Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1194383761","media":"renaissance capital","summary":"Three IPOs raised $330 million this past week, led by energy play ProFrac Holding(PFHC), which delay","content":"

Three IPOs raised $330 million this past week, led by energy play ProFrac Holding(PFHC), which delayed its pricing by a day. The challenge can be sorting out which stocks are likely to continue falling versus those that are likely to bounce back. But if you're looking at the long term, it may not be difficult to find some promising gems out there.

Last month, the S&P 500 had its worst month since the start of the pandemic, falling by more than 5%. Trulieve Cannabis (OTC:TCNNF), Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC), and Upstart Holdings (NASDAQ:UPST) performed even worse, declining by more than 20%. Here's why, despite their rough starts to the year, they could make for terrific buys today.

1. Trulieve Cannabis

Shares of pot producer Trulieve Cannabis sank 24% in January. The decline sent the stock to lows not seen since October 2020. A big reason why the stock looks to be a solid buy right now, however, is that it and rival Curaleaf Holdings are the top companies in the cannabis industry.

Last year, Trulieve acquired Arizona-based producer Harvest Health & Recreation, and together, for the three-month period ending Sept. 30, 2021, they combined for revenue of $316 million and an adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) profit of $121 million. Curaleaf, by comparison, reported sales of just over $317 million for the same period, but its adjusted EBITDA was much lower at $71 million.

Curaleaf trades at a higher premium, with a price-to-sales multiple of 4.6 versus just 3.6 for Trulieve. It's a modest difference, but you could argue that a stronger bottom line from Trulieve should garner a better multiple. The business is now more diverse with Harvest Health in the mix, and better earnings could set the company up for more acquisitions to take advantage of the fast-growing cannabis industry. Analysts from Markets and Markets expect the industry as a whole will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28% until 2026, when it may be worth more than $90 billion globally.

Trulieve is a promising stock to own after an abysmal January, and could be a diamond in the rough for investors willing to buy and hold.

2. Western Digital

Western Digital stock had a slightly better January than Trulieve, but it too fell by a relatively steep 21%. It's a surprising performance given that the company's second-quarter earnings, which it released on Jan. 27, looked strong. Sales of $4.8 billion for the period ending Dec. 31, 2021 were up 23% year-over-year, and its cloud business generated revenue growth of 89%. The company notes that it achieved this while dealing with supply chain disruptions.

The future is undoubtedly in the cloud, and Western Digital and its portable drives and technology make it easy for people to work from home and businesses to digitize their operations. The market for global digital transformation, which includes utilizing more connected devices, will grow at a CAGR of 23.6% until 2028, according to estimates from Grand View Research.

Western Digital's stock trades at a modest forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 6.3 -- nearly half the size of rival Seagate, where investors are paying more than 12 times its future profits. Several brokerages project that Western Digital could rise to more than $70 per share, which would be at least a 35% increase in value from the $52 it trades at today.

3. Upstart Holdings

Upstart Holdings crashed by 28% last month, performing the worst of the stocks on this list. However, it's also the fastest-growing; in its most recently released quarterly results for the period ending Sept. 30, 2021, the company's sales of $228 million rose by 250% from the prior-year period. The company, which looks to revolutionize the lending business through its artificial intelligence platform and utilization of 1,000+ data points to assess creditworthiness, is a disruptor in the financial services industry, with the potential to generate significant returns in the long run.

What impresses me the most about the business is that, in addition to some incredible growth numbers, Upstart also generates impressive margins. Over its past three quarters, the company has generated an operating profit of $80.5 million, or 15% of its total sales of $543.7 million. With a relatively young company (it went public in December 2020), investors normally expect growth but not a whole lot in terms of profitability. And yet Upstart has posted a profit in each of its last four quarters, averaging a profit margin of more than 12% in the trailing 12 months.

It isn't a cheap stock by any stretch, trading at more than 43 times its future earnings (investors are paying a multiple of 27 for popular fintech stock PayPal), but that number will come down if Upstart can keep building off this impressive growth. The challenge can be sorting out which stocks are likely to continue falling versus those that are likely to bounce back. But if you're looking at the long term, it may not be difficult to find some promising gems out there.Last month, the S&P 500 had its worst month since the start of the pandemic, falling by more than 5%. Trulieve Cannabis (OTC:TCNNF), Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC), and Upstart Holdings (NASDAQ:UPST) performed even worse, declining by more than 20%. Here's why, despite their rough starts to the year, they could make for terrific buys today.Image source: Getty Images.1. Trulieve CannabisShares of pot producer Trulieve Cannabis sank 24% in January. The decline sent the stock to lows not seen since October 2020. A big reason why the stock looks to be a solid buy right now, however, is that it and rival Curaleaf Holdings are the top companies in the cannabis industry.Last year, Trulieve acquired Arizona-based producer Harvest Health & Recreation, and together, for the three-month period ending Sept. 30, 2021, they combined for revenue of $316 million and an adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) profit of $121 million. Curaleaf, by comparison, reported sales of just over $317 million for the same period, but its adjusted EBITDA was much lower at $71 million.Curaleaf trades at a higher premium, with a price-to-sales multiple of 4.6 versus just 3.6 for Trulieve. It's a modest difference, but you could argue that a stronger bottom line from Trulieve should garner a better multiple. The business is now more diverse with Harvest Health in the mix, and better earnings could set the company up for more acquisitions to take advantage of the fast-growing cannabis industry. Analysts from Markets and Markets expect the industry as a whole will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28% until 2026, when it may be worth more than $90 billion globally.Trulieve is a promising stock to own after an abysmal January, and could be a diamond in the rough for investors willing to buy and hold.2. Western DigitalWestern Digital stock had a slightly better January than Trulieve, but it too fell by a relatively steep 21%. The market for global digital transformation, which includes utilizing more connected devices, will grow at a CAGR of 23.6% until 2028, according to estimates from Grand View Research.Western Digital's stock trades at a modest forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 6.3 -- nearly half the size of rival Seagate, where investors are paying more than 12 times its future profits. Several brokerages project that Western Digital could rise to more than $70 per share, which would be at least a 35% increase in value from the $52 it trades at today.3. Considering the stock market's average annual return was about 10% over the last 50 years, you don't have to take big risks to quadruple your money.

It's important, however, to choose the right stocks. Three Motley Fool contributors have sifted through the market's rubble to offer three top stocks that could help you achieve better returns. Here's why they picked Airbnb, Pinterest, and Restaurant Brands International.

The potential to be an explosive multibagger

Jennifer Saibil (Airbnb): Airbnb has posted phenomenal growth since it went public in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, and yet its stock is down 8% over the past year. That trails the S&P 500's 10% gain over the same period.

Growth stocks in general have been clobbered as the market deals with volatility related to macroeconomic and geopolitical concerns. How does that impact Airbnb specifically? For one thing, investors may be concerned about travel through parts of Europe. Also, when there are inflation and monetary worries, people may be less likely to spend their money on travel. That's all on top of the fact that although there have been strong signs of rebound, travel in general is still suppressed because of the pandemic.

That means in the short term, investors may not be loading money into Airbnb stock. But Airbnb has the potential to be an explosive multibagger. There are several catalysts that promote this conviction. First of all, travel is changing as it's coming back. People itching to move around have been finding innovative ways to do so, such as vacationing close to home and in suburban locations. And with the rise of remote work, people are booking longer stays and even living in vacation rentals. In its fourth-quarter letter to shareholders, Airbnb said, "We are undergoing the biggest change to travel since the advent of commercial flying." That statement packs a lot of meaning, and if you believe it, Airbnb may be the biggest recipient of the benefits. It operates a flexible model that can meet trends as they shift, whether it's these now or other ones in the future. Sales are soaring, with a 78% year-over-year increase in the fourth quarter, and the company is achieving this while becoming profitable.

With robust tailwinds and a viable business model, investors should expect high gains from Airbnb stock over the next 10 years.

Pinterest has a long runway for growth

Parkev Tatevosian (Pinterest): Investors looking to quadruple their money have good prospects with Pinterest. The image-based social media company is selling at a price that is substantially off its highs. The market has fallen out of love with Pinterest because of the headwinds it's facing from economic reopening. Pinterest has shed monthly active users for three consecutive quarters, totaling 55 million in losses. Still, the company has 96 million more users than it did before the start of the pandemic. Monthly active users are critical for Pinterest because it generates revenue from advertisers. Marketers are willing to spend more if they can gain access to more people.

Indeed, businesses are spending more money with Pinterest. From Q4 2019 to Q4 2021, Pinterest's average revenue per user increased from $1.22 to $1.93. So Pinterest gained nearly 100 million new users since the onset of the pandemic, but it also boosted the amount of revenue it's getting from each.

The global advertising industry is massive, and Pinterest is still just a tiny fraction of the total. In 2021, Pinterest earned revenue of $2.6 billion. Even though that was impressively higher than the $473 million it earned in 2017, it was less than 1% of the $763 billion in global ad spending in 2021. Its relatively small piece of the pie means there is a long runway for Pinterest to grow, which is critical for investors looking to quadruple their money.

Another fact that will help investors' cause is the inexpensive valuation of Pinterest stock. As of this writing, it is trading at a price-to-earnings ratio and price-to-free cash flow ratio of 51 and 21, respectively. Those are near the lowest prices investors have been able to buy Pinterest in the last three years.

A relatively safe growth stock

John Ballard (Restaurant Brands International): Think of Restaurant Brands as a value investor operating in the restaurant industry. 3G Capital owns 30% of the outstanding shares. This ownership puts some of the top restaurant brands, including Burger King and Tim Hortons, in the hands of a very capable management team that has skin in the game and is looking to grow the business for shareholders.

The company has started to return to pre-pandemic levels of growth. In 2021, systemwide sales grew nearly 14%, with profitability also improving. Adjusted earnings per share reached $2.69, up from $1.60 in 2020.

Future growth prospects look solid after Restaurant Brands acquired Popeyes in 2017 and Firehouse Subs in the fourth quarter of 2021. Both of these restaurants have a much smaller footprint compared to Burger King, which stretches out the company's runway for growth. Another plus is the improvement in digital sales, which grew 65% last year to reach nearly 30% of systemwide sales. These restaurant chains are clearly well positioned for the future.

It helps to have a well-entrenched business that is not dependent on achieving high growth to diversify your investments. Analysts currently expect Restaurant Brands to post average annual earnings growth of about 10%. A 3.6% dividend yield on top of compounding earnings growth could quadruple your investment over the next 10 years.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Want to Turn $5,000 Into $20,000? Even as the stock moves higher on Friday, next week offers potential catalysts for a bigger turnaround.

Chip maker Nvidia (ticker: NVDA) will host its flagship technical conference called GTC next Monday to Thursday, with the keynote from CEO Jensen Huang coinciding with the company’s investor day on Tuesday.

For a company that has seen its share price fall 13% this year—though the stock remains up more than 100% over the past 12 months, having roared to an all-time high in November 2021—the events are a big deal.

In focus will be a wave of new products, because the company tends to not provide target financial models, said Citi analysts Atif Malik and Amanda Scarnati in a note on Friday.

This has been the case in the past.

The team at Citi highlighted how last year Nvidia surprised investors with the announcement of the powerful new Grace computer processing unit (CPU), as well as raising the prospect of monetizing artificial intelligence software. Updates on sales to the critical gaming industry and $8 billion in the contract pipeline from the auto industry were another added bonus.

A lot has happened to the company since then.

A computer chip powerhouse, Nvidia has been a beneficiary of a spending boom in cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The group has also been boosted by its move to dominate in the metaverse, which describes emerging platforms and technologies for virtual worlds. But Nvidia also has had to ditch its acquisition of chip design Arm from SoftBank, which includes a hefty breakup fee.

Malik and Scarnati expect four key developments to come out of next week. Even as the stock moves higher on Friday, next week offers potential catalysts for a bigger turnaround.Chip maker Nvidia (ticker: NVDA) will host its flagship technical conference called GTC next Monday to Thursday, with the keynote from CEO Jensen Huang coinciding with the company’s investor day on Tuesday. For a company that has seen its share price fall 13% this year—though the stock remains up more than 100% over the past 12 months, having roared to an all-time high in November 2021—the events are a big deal.In focus will be a wave of new products, because the company tends to not provide target financial models, said Citi analysts Atif Malik and Amanda Scarnati in a note on Friday. This has been the case in the past. The team at Citi highlighted how last year Nvidia surprised investors with the announcement of the powerful new Grace computer processing unit (CPU), as well as raising the prospect of monetizing artificial intelligence software. Updates on sales to the critical gaming industry and $8 billion in the contract pipeline from the auto industry were another added bonus.A lot has happened to the company since then.A computer chip powerhouse, Nvidia has been a beneficiary of a spending boom in cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The group has also been boosted by its move to dominate in the metaverse, which describes emerging platforms and technologies for virtual worlds. But Nvidia also has had to ditch its acquisition of chip design Arm from SoftBank, which includes a hefty breakup fee.Malik and Scarnati expect four key developments to come out of next week. Any one of them could be pounced on by investors. The first is the announcement of new, 5-nanometer processing units for use in data centers, with 5nm units for use in gaming likely in September, as well as updates on the powerful Grace CPU.The second is news on the metaverse front, with new opportunities expected for Nvidia’s Omniverse, its 3-D virtual world simulation and collaboration platform that has widespread industrial applications. The third is an update on the sales pipeline linked to the growing Chinese electric-vehicle industry. Last year, auto maker NIO(NIO) partnered with Nvidia to use its chips in the development of autonomous driving solutions. The fourth is focused on investors: share buybacks. “Investors expect some buybacks post the failed Arm deal,” the team at Citi said.Malik and Scarnati rate Nvidia at Buy with a target price on the stock of $350. With the shares closing at $247.66 on Thursday, that implies an upside of more than 40%.Analysts are mostly bullish on Nvidia; brokers surveyed by FactSet overwhelmingly rate the stock at Overweight, with an average target price of $340.Nvidia stock rose almost 7% Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite has gained 2.1%, the S&P 500 has risen 1.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has advanced 0.8%.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":24,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9092015557,"gmtCreate":1644488437288,"gmtModify":1676533932554,"author":{"id":"3585477991561030","authorId":"3585477991561030","name":"Chloess","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dc1bba40382f0d1a7bb35fc7a06beba7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585477991561030","authorIdStr":"3585477991561030"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Huat","listText":"Huat","text":"Huat","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9092015557","repostId":"2210297562","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2210297562","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1644485726,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2210297562?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-10 17:35","market":"us","language":"en","title":"TotalEnergies to Acquire SunPower's Commercial & Industrial Solar Business","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2210297562","media":"PR Newswire","summary":"TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement with SunPower Corp.'s ","content":"
\n
TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement with SunPower Corp.'s (NASDAQ:SPWR) to purchase its Commercial & Industrial Solutions (CIS) business for $250 million, ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; TotalEnergies is the majority shareholder of SunPower, a leading solar technology and energy services provider. This acquisition is another step in TotalEnergies' roadmap to develop its distributed generation business, currently accounting to close to 500 MW in operation worldwide. It will allow TotalEnergies to extend its distributed generation business footprint to the U.S. and to develop over 100 MW of additional capacity per year. Beyond, this activity will also create synergies with TotalEnergies' large-scale solar energy portfolio in the U.S and enable B2B customers to benefit from more comprehensive energy solutions and new capabilities in financing and project ownership. As for SunPower, this operation follows previous announcement to focus on its high-growth residential business, offering a superior customer experience with a growing ecosystem of innovative products and services, hence exploring strategic options for the CIS business. All in all, this win-win operation fully fits TotalEnergies and SunPower's respective strategies to better serve industrial, commercial and residential customers.\"With this acquisition, TotalEnergies is further investing to grow its distributed generation activity in the U.S. and support its B2B customers in meeting their sustainable development goals. It is a new milestone in our renewable development in the country, where we are targeting 4 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2025\", said Vincent Stoquart, senior vice president Renewables for TotalEnergies. \"This will also give SunPower additional resources to focus on the growing residential market. We look forward to welcoming the Commercial & Industrial teams and ensuring the continuity of TotalEnergies' commitment in this business as we integrate this high-quality portfolio of products and customers.\"\"TotalEnergies is the ideal partner for our CIS business to take advantage of the growing commercial market and opportunities like community solar and front-of-meter storage,\" said Peter Faricy, CEO of SunPower. \"The sale enables SunPower to focus on creating a superior residential experience, increase our investment in product and digital innovation, and reach more homeowners. The enhanced strategic clarity created by this transaction will help SunPower lead the industry and deliver maximum value to our investors, partners and customers.\"Following a thorough process involving discussions with a number of parties, and upon the unanimous recommendation of a special committee of SunPower's independent directors, the acquisition has been approved by both companies. The transaction is expected to close early Q2 subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. This operation is not expected to reduce TotalEnergies' majority ownership stake (50.83%) in SunPower.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":530,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9011707646,"gmtCreate":1648921661305,"gmtModify":1676534422192,"author":{"id":"3585477991561030","authorId":"3585477991561030","name":"Chloess","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dc1bba40382f0d1a7bb35fc7a06beba7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585477991561030","authorIdStr":"3585477991561030"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buy","listText":"Buy","text":"Buy","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9011707646","repostId":"1148940081","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1148940081","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1648863658,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1148940081?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-02 09:40","market":"us","language":"en","title":"US IPO Weekly Recap: The 1Q22 IPO Market Closes Out with SPACs and Pipeline News","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1148940081","media":"renaissancecap...","summary":"The 1Q22 IPO market ended with another quiet week. Investors, analysts, journalists, and legislators poke, prod, test, and study the companies down to a microscopic level. And yet this quarter, each one of them managed to surprise. Facebook parent Meta Platforms tanked the entire market on Thursday after its weak report, only to see stocks rescued a day later by Amazon’s impressive growth.

Now that we’ve had a few minutes to breathe, here are some thoughts on tech’s crazy week:

Amazon’s strategy of diversification is paying off: This was the quarter that Amazon clearly demonstrated that it’s far more than an e-tailer. Its Amazon Web Services cloud business is on fire—it’s arguably a more valuable (and far less cyclical) business than the company’s legacy e-commerce arm. It is no accident that founder Jeff Bezos chose Andy Jassy—who built and ran AWS—to be his successor as CEO.

But there’s more to the quarter. Amazon’s advertising business generated $10 billion in sales in the latest period, having doubled in a bit more than a year. It now generates more ad dollars than Google’s YouTube. People come to the Amazon store with intent—no matter what you search for, you will see an assortment of sponsored listings, i.e., advertising. I did a search for “staple gun,” just to prove the point, and the results included more than a dozen sponsored listings.

Amazon’s third-party services business, meanwhile, now has an annual run rate of more than $120 billion. The business has become an indispensable channel for vendors of every variety, thanks to its warehousing and delivery services.

Amazon has built one of the most effective logistics networks on Earth—some analyst estimates have Amazon delivering more packages this year than $200 billion market-value United Parcel Service (UPS). Even after Friday’s 14% rally, Amazon shares are still down year to date, following just a minimal gain in 2021. The stock looks like a bargain.

You can’t overstate the importance of cloud computing: One of the most important themes from the last two weeks is that the cloud businesses at Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet just continue to get better. All three turned in better-than-expected results. Microsoft reported 46% growth for its Azure business in the December quarter—and projected even faster growth in the March quarter. Google Cloud revenue grew 45% for the second straight quarter. And AWS helped offset softness in Amazon’s core e-commerce business, with revenue growth improving to 40% from 39%, accelerating for the fourth-straight quarter. The cloud arms of these three giants are the best enterprise computing businesses in the market.

Raising the stakes: Amazon last week raised the monthly rate on Amazon Prime by 15% for monthly payers to $15.99; annual subscription will see a 17% increase to $139. The company last increased the Prime subscription rate in 2018, and costs for labor and delivery are rising, so a price bump seems rational.

The move comes just weeks after Netflix (NFLX) instituted a price increase for its subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. It will be interesting to see the consumer reaction, but my suspicion is that elasticity is high—the services are valuable, and there aren’t easy substitutions.

The price hikes indicate just how confident Amazon and Netflix are about their subscriptions. Here’s a little perspective: the New York Times (NYT), which in recent weeks announced deals to acquire the sports news site the Athletic and the popular word game Wordle, has set a goal of 15 million total subscribers by 2027. Both Amazon and Netflix have more than 200 million subscribers apiece.

Spend wisely: Alphabet last week declared a 20-for-1 stock split, which will bring the share price down to around the $150 range. But what they aren’t doing is paying actual dividends. They should. The company has $140 billion in cash and equivalents; it generated $18.6 billion in free cash flow in the latest quarter.

Meta just highlighted the risks of choosing buybacks over dividends. The Facebook parent bought back $33 billion of stock over just the last two quarters. Given the Meta selloff last week, that cash was basically set on fire. Had the company instead declared a special dividend, it could have paid holders close to $14 a share.

The shakeout isn’t over: The underlying issues that have plagued tech stocks for months are still in place. Interest rates are going to head higher still. Chips remain in short supply. Inflation is uncomfortably high. The market’s appetite for speculative names is low. There’s a reason the best performing tech stocks so far this year are cheap—old school names like VMware (VMW), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Dell Technologies (DELL), and IBM (IBM).

In the past two weeks we’ve learned that more than ever the market likes consistency. Now that we’ve had a few minutes to breathe, here are some thoughts on tech’s crazy week:Amazon’s strategy of diversification is paying off: This was the quarter that Amazon clearly demonstrated that it’s far more than an e-tailer. Its Amazon Web Services cloud business is on fire—it’s arguably a more valuable (and far less cyclical) business than the company’s legacy e-commerce arm. It is no accident that founder Jeff Bezos chose Andy Jassy—who built and ran AWS—to be his successor as CEO.But there’s more to the quarter. I did a search for “staple gun,” just to prove the point, and the results included more than a dozen sponsored listings.Amazon’s third-party services business, meanwhile, now has an annual run rate of more than $120 billion. The business has become an indispensable channel for vendors of every variety, thanks to its warehousing and delivery services.Amazon has built one of the most effective logistics networks on Earth—some analyst estimates have Amazon delivering more packages this year than $200 billion market-value United Parcel Service (UPS). The cloud arms of these three giants are the best enterprise computing businesses in the market.Raising the stakes: Amazon last week raised the monthly rate on Amazon Prime by 15% for monthly payers to $15.99; annual subscription will see a 17% increase to $139. Both Amazon and Netflix have more than 200 million subscribers apiece.Spend wisely: Alphabet last week declared a 20-for-1 stock split, which will bring the share price down to around the $150 range. But what they aren’t doing is paying actual dividends. They should. The company has $140 billion in cash and equivalents; it generated $18.6 billion in free cash flow in the latest quarter.Meta just highlighted the risks of choosing buybacks over dividends. There’s a reason the best performing tech stocks so far this year are cheap—old school names like VMware (VMW), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Dell Technologies (DELL), and IBM (IBM).In the past two weeks we’ve learned that more than ever the market likes consistency. That’s what made Meta’s earnings and outlook this past week so troubling: Facebook is no longer the reliable performer investors have come to expect. But the rest of Big Tech still fits the bill. Apple and Microsoft consistently beat expectations with products customers want. And you can say the same for Google and Amazon.
