The White House said Biden &#34;was clear that, if Russia undertakes a further invasion of Ukraine, the United States together with our allies and partners will respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs on Russia.&#34;</p><p>Analysts and investors have debated the lasting effects of an invasion on financial markets. Here&#39;s what investors need to know:</p><p><b>Energy prices set to surge</b></p><p>Energy prices are expected to soar in the event of an invasion, likely sending the price of crude above the $100-a-barrel threshold for the first time since 2014.</p><p>&#34;I think if a war breaks out between Russia and Ukraine, $100 a barrel will be almost assured,&#34; Phil Flynn, market analyst at Price Futures Group, told MarketWatch. U.S. benchmark oil futures  ended at a seven-year high of $93.10 on Friday, while Brent crude ,&#34; the global benchmark closed at $94.44 a barrel.</p><p>&#34;More than likely we will spike hard and then drop. The $100-a-barrel area is more likely because inventories are tightest they have been in years,&#34; Flynn said, explaining that a monthly report Friday from the International Energy Agency warning that the crude market was set to tighten further makes any potential supply disruption &#34;all that more ominous.&#34;</p><p>Beyond crude, Russia&#39;s role as a key supplier of natural gas to Western Europe could send prices in the region soaring. Overall, spiking energy prices in Europe and around the world would be the most likely way a Russian invasion would stoke volatility across financial markets, analysts said.</p><p><b>Fed vs. flight to quality</b></p><p>Treasurys are among the most popular havens for investors during bouts of geopolitical uncertainty, so it was no surprise to see yields slide across the curve Friday afternoon. Treasury yields, which move the opposite direction of prices, were vulnerable to a pullback after surging Thursday in the wake of a hotter-than-expected January inflation report that saw traders price in aggressive rate increases by the Federal Reserve beginning with a potential half-point hike in March.</p><p>Analysts and investors debated how fighting in Ukraine could affect the Federal Reserve&#39;s plans for tightening monetary policy.</p><p>If Ukraine is attacked &#34;it adds more credence to our view that the Fed will be more dovish than the market currently believes as the war would make the outlook even more uncertain,&#34; said Jay Hatfield, chief investment officer at Infrastructure Capital Management, in emailed comments.</p><p>Others argued that a jump in energy prices would be likely to underline the Fed&#39;s worries over inflation.</p><p><b>Stocks and geopolitics</b></p><p>Uncertainty and the resulting volatility could make for more rough sledding for stocks in the near term, but analysts noted that U.S. equities have tended to get over geopolitical shocks relatively quickly.</p><p>&#34;You can&#39;t minimize what today&#39;s news could mean on that part of the world and the people impacted, but from an investment point of view we need to remember that major geopolitical events historically haven&#39;t moved stocks much,&#34; said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at LPL Financial, in a note, pointing to the chart below:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a5061dae5cb70d1704dc703f73fd77f6\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"321\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>LPL Financial</span></p><p>Indeed, the takeaway from past geopolitical crises may be that it&#39;s best not to sell into a panic, wrote MarketWatch columnist Mark Hulbert in September.</p><p>He noted data compiled by Ned Davis Research examining the 28 worst political or economic crises over the six decades before the 9/11 attacks in 2001. In 19 cases, the Dow was higher six months after the crisis began. The average six-month gain following all 28 crises was 2.3%. Asia-Pacific shares were closing down around 0.7% , while Wall Street futures pointed to a modest 0.4% drop.</p>\n<p>The Fed forecasts showed 13 of the 18 person policy board saw rates rising in 2023 versus only six previously, while seven tipped a first move in 2022.</p>\n<p>\"The new Fed 'dot plot' indicating that the median FOMC member now forecasts two Fed rate hikes in 2023, versus none in the March iteration, represented the hawkish surprise out of the June Fed meeting,\" said Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at NAB.</p>\n<p>While these 'dot plots' are not commitments and have a poor track record of predicting rates, the sudden shift was a shock.</p>\n<p>The Fed also signalled it would now be considering whether to 'taper' its $120 billion-a-month asset purchase programme meeting by meeting and downgraded the risk from the pandemic given progress with vaccinations.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan analysts noted Fed Chair Jerome Powell had not been as aggressive in his media conference. He had described it as a \"talking about talking about meeting,\" a glib reference to his protestations earlier this year that the Fed was not even \"talking about talking about\" tighter policy.</p>\n<p>\"It appears that faster progress toward reopening and higher inflation surprises revealed some hawks on the FOMC, but we suspect that leadership is predominantly anchored at zero or <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike in 2023,\" JPMorgan said, sticking with a prediction for tapering to start early next year.</p>\n<p>Markets moved quickly to price in the risk of earlier action and Fed fund futures shifted to imply a first hike by the end of 2022. Yields on 10-year bonds shot up almost nine basis points to 1.57%.</p>\n<p>ALL RISE</p>\n<p>The dollar also broke out of recent tight ranges. It had risen 0.9% on Wednesday against a basket of currencies to 91.387</p>\n<p>for its biggest gain since March last year and set a two-month high in early European trading.</p>\n<p>Powell's hawkish turn prompted both Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank to abandon their calls that the U.S. currency would weaken against the euro, although others were not so sure.</p>\n<p>Agnès Belaisch, Chief European Strategist of the Barings Investment Institute, said the fact that the Fed was not going to lift rates any time soon was good for world growth and that FX markets would therefore get over Wednesday's shift.</p>\n<p>\"He (Powell) said they wouldn't do anything for the next two years, so it's a shock but wrapped in good news,\" Belaisch said.</p>\n<p>\"I think he gave the markets the all-clear to rally\".</p>\n<p>The euro slipped back towards $1.1950 in the European session and the dollar was just shy of its 2021 high against the yen, last buying 110.55 yen .</p>\n<p>The kiwi dollar clawed back about half of its overnight losses after first-quarter growth figures blew past forecasts, and while the Aussie dollar and British pound stabilised emerging market currencies weakened.</p>\n<p>Ahead for currency markets is an interest rate decision from Turkey's central bank due at 1100 GMT, which has the lira on edge . The business software company's revenue topped estimates as well. The company forecast current-quarter profit below consensus, however, as it increases investment in its cloud computing operations. Its shares fell 4.7% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>Roblox(RBLX) </b>– Roblox tumbled 7.7% in the premarket after it reported 43 million daily active users for May, up 28% compared to a year earlier but down from 43.3 million in April. Spending by users of the videogame platform was down slightly from a year earlier.</p>\n<p><b>Kindred Biosciences(KIN)</b> – The pet therapeutics company agreed to be acquired byElanco Animal Health(ELAN) for $9.25 per share, or $440 million. Kindred had closed at $6.34 Tuesday, and its stock surged 44.6% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>La-Z-Boy(LZB) </b>– La-Z-Boy reported quarterly earnings of 87 cents per share, compared to a consensus estimate of 74 cents a share. The White House said Biden &#34;was clear that, if Russia undertakes a further invasion of Ukraine, the United States together with our allies and partners will respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs on Russia.&#34;</p><p>Analysts and investors have debated the lasting effects of an invasion on financial markets. Here&#39;s what investors need to know:</p><p><b>Energy prices set to surge</b></p><p>Energy prices are expected to soar in the event of an invasion, likely sending the price of crude above the $100-a-barrel threshold for the first time since 2014.</p><p>&#34;I think if a war breaks out between Russia and Ukraine, $100 a barrel will be almost assured,&#34; Phil Flynn, market analyst at Price Futures Group, told MarketWatch. U.S. benchmark oil futures  ended at a seven-year high of $93.10 on Friday, while Brent crude ,&#34; the global benchmark closed at $94.44 a barrel.</p><p>&#34;More than likely we will spike hard and then drop. The $100-a-barrel area is more likely because inventories are tightest they have been in years,&#34; Flynn said, explaining that a monthly report Friday from the International Energy Agency warning that the crude market was set to tighten further makes any potential supply disruption &#34;all that more ominous.&#34;</p><p>Beyond crude, Russia&#39;s role as a key supplier of natural gas to Western Europe could send prices in the region soaring. Overall, spiking energy prices in Europe and around the world would be the most likely way a Russian invasion would stoke volatility across financial markets, analysts said.</p><p><b>Fed vs. flight to quality</b></p><p>Treasurys are among the most popular havens for investors during bouts of geopolitical uncertainty, so it was no surprise to see yields slide across the curve Friday afternoon. Treasury yields, which move the opposite direction of prices, were vulnerable to a pullback after surging Thursday in the wake of a hotter-than-expected January inflation report that saw traders price in aggressive rate increases by the Federal Reserve beginning with a potential half-point hike in March.</p><p>Analysts and investors debated how fighting in Ukraine could affect the Federal Reserve&#39;s plans for tightening monetary policy.</p><p>If Ukraine is attacked &#34;it adds more credence to our view that the Fed will be more dovish than the market currently believes as the war would make the outlook even more uncertain,&#34; said Jay Hatfield, chief investment officer at Infrastructure Capital Management, in emailed comments.</p><p>Others argued that a jump in energy prices would be likely to underline the Fed&#39;s worries over inflation.</p><p><b>Stocks and geopolitics</b></p><p>Uncertainty and the resulting volatility could make for more rough sledding for stocks in the near term, but analysts noted that U.S. equities have tended to get over geopolitical shocks relatively quickly.</p><p>&#34;You can&#39;t minimize what today&#39;s news could mean on that part of the world and the people impacted, but from an investment point of view we need to remember that major geopolitical events historically haven&#39;t moved stocks much,&#34; said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at LPL Financial, in a note, pointing to the chart below:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a5061dae5cb70d1704dc703f73fd77f6\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"321\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>LPL Financial</span></p><p>Indeed, the takeaway from past geopolitical crises may be that it&#39;s best not to sell into a panic, wrote MarketWatch columnist Mark Hulbert in September.</p><p>He noted data compiled by Ned Davis Research examining the 28 worst political or economic crises over the six decades before the 9/11 attacks in 2001. In 19 cases, the Dow was higher six months after the crisis began. The average six-month gain following all 28 crises was 2.3%. The business software company's revenue topped estimates as well. The company forecast current-quarter profit below consensus, however, as it increases investment in its cloud computing operations. Its shares fell 4.7% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>Roblox(RBLX) </b>– Roblox tumbled 7.7% in the premarket after it reported 43 million daily active users for May, up 28% compared to a year earlier but down from 43.3 million in April. Spending by users of the videogame platform was down slightly from a year earlier.</p>\n<p><b>Kindred Biosciences(KIN)</b> – The pet therapeutics company agreed to be acquired byElanco Animal Health(ELAN) for $9.25 per share, or $440 million. Kindred had closed at $6.34 Tuesday, and its stock surged 44.6% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>La-Z-Boy(LZB) </b>– La-Z-Boy reported quarterly earnings of 87 cents per share, compared to a consensus estimate of 74 cents a share. The company best known for its reclining chairs also reported better-than-expected revenue. La-Z-Boy said it was being impacted by supply chain issues and significant increases in raw materials prices. Its shares lost 2.3% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>H&amp;R Block(HRB)</b> – H&amp;R Block beat Street forecasts for both profit and revenue in its latest quarter, and the tax preparation firm also raised its quarterly dividend by 4% to 27 cents per share. Additionally, H&amp;R Block is shifting the end of its fiscal year to June 30 from April 30, to better capture tax filing activity. Asia-Pacific shares were closing down around 0.7% , while Wall Street futures pointed to a modest 0.4% drop.</p>\n<p>The Fed forecasts showed 13 of the 18 person policy board saw rates rising in 2023 versus only six previously, while seven tipped a first move in 2022.</p>\n<p>\"The new Fed 'dot plot' indicating that the median FOMC member now forecasts two Fed rate hikes in 2023, versus none in the March iteration, represented the hawkish surprise out of the June Fed meeting,\" said Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at NAB.</p>\n<p>While these 'dot plots' are not commitments and have a poor track record of predicting rates, the sudden shift was a shock.</p>\n<p>The Fed also signalled it would now be considering whether to 'taper' its $120 billion-a-month asset purchase programme meeting by meeting and downgraded the risk from the pandemic given progress with vaccinations.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan analysts noted Fed Chair Jerome Powell had not been as aggressive in his media conference. He had described it as a \"talking about talking about meeting,\" a glib reference to his protestations earlier this year that the Fed was not even \"talking about talking about\" tighter policy.</p>\n<p>\"It appears that faster progress toward reopening and higher inflation surprises revealed some hawks on the FOMC, but we suspect that leadership is predominantly anchored at zero or <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike in 2023,\" JPMorgan said, sticking with a prediction for tapering to start early next year.</p>\n<p>Markets moved quickly to price in the risk of earlier action and Fed fund futures shifted to imply a first hike by the end of 2022. Yields on 10-year bonds shot up almost nine basis points to 1.57%.</p>\n<p>ALL RISE</p>\n<p>The dollar also broke out of recent tight ranges. It had risen 0.9% on Wednesday against a basket of currencies to 91.387</p>\n<p>for its biggest gain since March last year and set a two-month high in early European trading.</p>\n<p>Powell's hawkish turn prompted both Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank to abandon their calls that the U.S. currency would weaken against the euro, although others were not so sure.</p>\n<p>Agnès Belaisch, Chief European Strategist of the Barings Investment Institute, said the fact that the Fed was not going to lift rates any time soon was good for world growth and that FX markets would therefore get over Wednesday's shift.</p>\n<p>\"He (Powell) said they wouldn't do anything for the next two years, so it's a shock but wrapped in good news,\" Belaisch said.</p>\n<p>\"I think he gave the markets the all-clear to rally\".</p>\n<p>The euro slipped back towards $1.1950 in the European session and the dollar was just shy of its 2021 high against the yen, last buying 110.55 yen .</p>\n<p>The kiwi dollar clawed back about half of its overnight losses after first-quarter growth figures blew past forecasts, and while the Aussie dollar and British pound stabilised emerging market currencies weakened.</p>\n<p>Ahead for currency markets is an interest rate decision from Turkey's central bank due at 1100 GMT, which has the lira on edge . Asia-Pacific shares were closing down around 0.7% , while Wall Street futures pointed to a modest 0.4% drop.</p>\n<p>The Fed forecasts showed 13 of the 18 person policy board saw rates rising in 2023 versus only six previously, while seven tipped a first move in 2022.</p>\n<p>\"The new Fed 'dot plot' indicating that the median FOMC member now forecasts two Fed rate hikes in 2023, versus none in the March iteration, represented the hawkish surprise out of the June Fed meeting,\" said Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at NAB.</p>\n<p>While these 'dot plots' are not commitments and have a poor track record of predicting rates, the sudden shift was a shock.</p>\n<p>The Fed also signalled it would now be considering whether to 'taper' its $120 billion-a-month asset purchase programme meeting by meeting and downgraded the risk from the pandemic given progress with vaccinations.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan analysts noted Fed Chair Jerome Powell had not been as aggressive in his media conference. He had described it as a \"talking about talking about meeting,\" a glib reference to his protestations earlier this year that the Fed was not even \"talking about talking about\" tighter policy.</p>\n<p>\"It appears that faster progress toward reopening and higher inflation surprises revealed some hawks on the FOMC, but we suspect that leadership is predominantly anchored at zero or <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike in 2023,\" JPMorgan said, sticking with a prediction for tapering to start early next year.</p>\n<p>Markets moved quickly to price in the risk of earlier action and Fed fund futures shifted to imply a first hike by the end of 2022.
